The year 2009 in music

So far...

January

Some insignificant and musically irrelevant milestones shook the music public and important music eventsa are nowhere to be mentioned. Like "Kelly Clarkson breaks record for the biggest jump to number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 when her single "My Life Would Suck Without You" soars from number 97 to number one fueled by 280,000 digital downloads on the first week of release. (The previous record was set by Britney Spears' "Womanizer" which went from number 96 to number one in 2008.)"

Apart from that Lady GaGa's debut single "Just Dance" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after 22 weeks - the second longest climb to number one, since Creed "With Arms Wide Open" in November 2000 (27 weeks) and Madonna announces that she will extend her record-breaking Sticky & Sweet Tour during summer of 2009, to visit cities that were excluded during the first run. The tour will kick-off in The O2, London on July 4. The extension will take Sticky & Sweet Tour to a total of over 80 shows, putting it among the top five tours of all time.

Well Ferbruary has been more significant in the music industry mainly marked for the Grammy Awards.

At the 51st Grammy Awards in Staples Center, Los Angeles
Alison Krauss and Robert Plant win five Grammys for their duet album Raising Sand which also won Album of the Year
Lil Wayne wins four awards, including Best Rap Album for Tha Carter III (the only album to sell one million copies in the first week of release in United States in 2008).
Blink-182 announce that they are to reunite for a tour and new album.
And my favorite music scandal of course is Rihanna postponingher Malaysian concert in The Good Girl Gone Bad Tour amid reports that she accused her boyfriend R&B star Chris Brown of assault. Another event is "Crack a Bottle", performed by Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent, sets a new record for opening week download sales in the United States, at 418,000 copies. The previous record (335,000) was set by "Live Your Life".
And what needs to be mentioned is that february had something for everybody. AFI Discreetly announce the new album title to be Crash Love
Duffy dominates the Brit Awards, held in Earl's Court, London. Her album, Rockferry, the U.K top seller in 2008, won best British album, and she also won best British female and British breakthrough
Kings of Leon (best international group) also win best international album for Only By The Night.
Katy Perry wins best international female trophy.
Flo Rida breaks his own record when his single "Right Round" is downloaded 636,000 units in the opening week. His 2008 chart-topper "Low" set the previous record for most downloaded song with 467,000 units sold on the first week of release.

As for March, the rapper T.I. was sentenced to a one year and one day prison sentence and is more a news than U2's new album release which i personally dislike....a lot.

We’ve all been witnesses of the international charade called Eurosong through the years. Americans call it Eurotrash, and not by chance, but who are they to speak? Really?  No offense.

I have never been a fan and what is more I am strongly against low quality 1990 ‘German’ techno music and ‘love will survive’, ‘hold me tight’ and similar 2-word lyrics. I know that many people will agree with me on this and I also know that people live to watch Eurovision every year, something I’ll never understand.
Since it has survived for many years and is becoming more and more popular, I guess there is something more to it than just bad songs.
My guess is that it is the spirit, the diversity of 34-40 countries all in one evening and one place which is rarely seen anywhere else.
I did not start this to say how bad Eurovision is…but I got carried away.
My favorites are always the Turks, even though I rarely watch, and this year was no exception. I am adding Mor ve ötesi – Deli to my playlist. Are you?

A young American's Balkan brass band

Zach Condon, the young man behind Beirut, after dropping out of college (on the first day, he walked straight to the office and asked for his money back) stayed with a cousin for a while in Amsterdam in a building where "a weird Serbian artist guy" blasted Balkan brass music from his top-floor apartment, driving his neighbors batty -- and providing the spark for what would become Beirut's "Gulag Orkestrar." (Released on Ba Da Bing!)

It's been long since I've stumbled upon something worth watching and posting. Émilie Simon is a multidisciplinary artist; writing, composing and singing in all of her albums. Maybe her name does not ring a bell but the fact that she composed the original soundtrack for Luc Jacquet's documentary film La Marche de l'empereur (March of the Penguins) for which she got the award Best Original Soundtrack at the Césars in 2006, certainly will. What is more, she even toured with Placebo, doing the first part of their tour from 29th of September 2006 until the 4th December 2006. I will take pleasure in this new discovery of mine for days to come :) Hope you will, too.

1965. While "Stranger in Paradise" played, Tony Bennett was having a walk along The Serpentine in Hyde Park in London. If all of this had not been filmed and played by UK and US television stations, Tony wouldn’t have claimed he made the first music video. Only then, music videos were called promos and had the purpose to simply promote.
The early age of music videos dates back to the beginning of the last century when "visual music" appeared - the animated films of Oskar Fischinger supplied with orchestral scores.
The pioneering full-color music video for The Exciters' "Tell Him" from 1962 greatly influenced all that came afterwards.The defining work in the development of the modern music video was The Beatles' first major motion picture, A Hard Day's Night in 1964, directed by Richard Lester. The musical segments in this film arguably set out the basic visual vocabulary of today's music videos, influencing a vast number of contemporary musicians, and countless subsequent pop and rock group music videos. Also in 1966 the clip of Bob Dylan performing "Subterranean Homesick Blues" filmed by D A Pennebaker was much used.. Other pioneering music videos made during this time include the promotional films made by The Doors.
When released in 1968, the animated film Yellow Submarine was an international sensation. Soon it was commonplace for artists to make promotional films, and bands like The Byrds and The Beach Boys were also making promotional films.
The promotional clip continued to grow in importance, with television programs such as The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert mixing concert footage with clips incorporating camera tricks, special effects, and dramatizations of song lyrics.
Other important contributions to the development of the genre include the film of the Woodstock Festival, and the various concert films that were made during the early Seventies, most notably Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs And Englishmen and particularly Pink Floyd's groundbreaking Live at Pompeii concert film, which featured sophisticated rhythmic cross-cutting.
Also during this time,David Bowie released his video for Space Oddity. Although these "film clips" were often aired on pop music TV shows, they were still considered as secondary at that time, with live or mimed performances generally given precedence.

During that time Mercer began writing, "Wincing The Night Away," a more diverse amalgam of sounds than the band's previous lo-fi releases, with lyrics indicating a desire to be set free.
