If anyone deserves to be called Mr Jiu-jitsu, then surely that's Demian Maia. We know most of you are probably familiar with some of his incredible wins in MMA, but for us one of his most amazing wins is in a BJJ fight which, lucky enough, you can watch in the video below. If you know anything about Mr Jacare (like we expect you do), then it only makes what you are about to watch that much more incredible. Enjoy!

Last Tuesday we honored the death of the founder of JJ and the man responsible for teaching what later evolved into Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Mitsuyo Maeda also known has Count Koma was born on the 18^th of November 1878, in the city of Hirosaki, Japan. Maeda who got his nickname "Count Koma" in the period when he lived in Spain, started teaching Carlos Gracie, son of Gastão Gracie, in the first decade of the turn of the century, who then later taught his brothers. Helio Gracie, arguably one of the biggest names in the Jiu-jitsu world, only learned the “Gentle Art” years later, as he was considered too young and fragile to learn Jiu-jitsu.

Checkout this great video, a homage to Count Koma, who is considered by many to be the father of our great sport.

Sinister Jiu-jitsu by “Sinistro”

This guy has great BJJ and has been a great competitor since he was a toddler, plus he has a really cool name that always makes us smile. Check out these variations to a back attack so your jiu-jitsu keeps being very “Sinistro”.

Free tip: next time you see your Brazilian instructor tell him “Mestre seu Jiu-jitsu é sinistro” and you will be on your way to that next coveted stipe or he will take it easier next time he taps your ass. Promise!!!

Graduation recap!!!

All of Prof. Daniel’s students gathered in Macau for a graduation ceremony followed by a mouth-watering Brazilian BBQ, where Prof. Daniel showed that he can, not only handle himself on the mats, but he also knows his way around a BBQ grill.

All of Prof.'s students from Hong Kong and Macau attended plus Prof. Silvio Braga and Prof. Makoto Aramaki and his students.

Thank you so much for the support everyone!

The promotions: a couple of students got promoted to blue belt, Michael from Gracie Barra and Dinis and Toby from Macau BJJ/Nova União China. There were some stripes awarded as well to blue and white belts, but the big moment was the brown belt awarded to Henry Chan. One of the best ambassadors of the gentle art in Hong Kong and the man behind Gracie Barra HK. Congratulations!

After the event we all went to Coloane Island for a delicious Brazilian "churrasco" and had a great time with our friends and families.

Thank you all so much for coming, keep training hard and we hope to see everyone together again soon!

That in itself and in our "purple-belt opinion" should be a good reason for a stripe in our next graduation class. Of course that's not going to happen, but there's no harm in trying. “HOW BJJ-ADDICTED ARE YOU?

It seems that BJJ has totally taken over my life. I eat, speak and breathe Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) all the time. I wouldn’t have noticed it, until I went out with a Portuguese guy last weekend and he became my victim for incessant talk about jiu-jitsu. I guess I cannot help talking about it that he already pointed it out to me by asking if what we’re having was a “martial arts date”. He even had a taste of my rear naked choke when he was misbehaving, but that’s another story. Even when I go out with my non-BJJ practicing friends, I’m all too eager to share my BJJ stories and videos that they are probably seriously considering to take me out of their gimmick list by now.

So how do you know if you’ve just submitted your life to BJJ? Check out the checklist below and give yourself a point for each number that applies to you:

1. You spend your Sunday going to the open mat to “hang out” (read: sweat it all out) with your teammates instead of spending it with your family or significant other.

2. You are out with your friends on Saturday night, and yet you are thinking “How do you do the brabo choke again from the bottom?”.

3. While making love, you told your non-BJJ practicing guy: “Honey, did you know that being on top is one of the most advantageous positions in BJJ?” Then when he asks you what you can do from there, you start showing him chokes and armbars from mount.

4. You try to pass your girl’s “guard” while in the missionary position.

5. The friends you always converse and hang out with are those from your team.

6. You spend your free time at work watching Marcelo Garcia or Eddie Bravo on YouTube.

7. You check the BJJ forums all the time, as if it’s your personal e-mail.

8. You move in to a place near your gym for proximity to training.

9. Your credit card bill reflects those you bought locally and online — all for BJJ and grappling.

10. You’ve given up smoking because you’re panting badly every time you roll on the mat.

11. You don’t get a foot spa because you need all your foot callouses (from mat burns) to move better on the mat.

12. If you’re a girl BJJ practitioner, you tend to converse more with your guy friends who watch and understand the UFC. You tell them how amazed you were with the armbar of Din Thomas or judo throw of Karo Parisyan.

13. If you’re a guy BJJ practitioner, you bond some more with your guy buddies who watch and understand the UFC. You do takedowns, armbars and chokes on them whenever you guys get together.

14. Your good-looking, non-BJJ practicing date tells you, “It feels weird and awkward talking to a girl about BJJ. So is this a martial arts date?” You reply with a sweet smile, then you continue talking about the triangle choke you just did earlier on your 75-kg guy teammate.

15. When your pet wrestles with a stuffed toy or another pet during playtime, you call it grappling. You are even compelled to call out moves (Take the back! Pin him down!) while watching, as if your pet understands.

16. You try to wrist lock or choke your friends when they misbehave.

17. You take several supplements — Glucosamine/Chrondoitin/MSM for joints, Calcium for bones, Vitamin C for immune system, Whey Protein for muscles, etc. — to keep yourself fit for training.

18. You’ve had bruises on the most unusual parts of your body — wrists, chest, hipbone, thigh, shin, instep, neck, jaw, etc.

19. You often find yourself mimicking the choking moves or underhook / overhook holds while at your office desk.

20. Whenever you travel (locally or internationally), you have to squeeze in training at the local gym of the place you’re visiting.

21. You’ve had at least one injury — either you’ve broken a bone or dislocated / hyperextended a joint.

22. You keep an ice pack/cold compress pack in your fridge. It comes in handy when you come home injured.

23. You carry a bunch of bananas during tournaments / competitions.

24. You’re nursing an injury and was advised to rest for a month yet you can’t wait to start training again after a week that you end up re-injuring yourself.

25. You set-up your own mats at home or office so that you can practice BJJ anytime you please.

26. The one thing that you can’t live without at training is your handy-dandy Mueller sports tape.

So how much of a BJJ addict are you? You are a…

BLACK BELT (21-24 points)

You don’t have a life besides BJJ! Your motto is EAT. SLEEP. JIU-JITSU. If you’re married / in a relationship, you are always in trouble with your significant other for spending too much time training. If you’re single, don’t even ask why. You love BJJ so much that you will go insane if you don’t roll sweaty on the mat for three days. You think you are home when you’re on the mat. You are practically a dojo rat, and the coach has to shove you off the mat to get rid of you. You’ll marry BJJ if you could.

BROWN BELT (17-20 points)

You train regularly, and you’re subscribed to unlimited sessions of BJJ. You always catch yourself finishing a meeting early to catch up on training. Whenever you go shopping, you never skip on buying rash guards and board shorts. You’ve given up your social life in favor of BJJ training, although you reserve Friday or Saturday nights with your friends other than your teammates. However, you make sure that one day is reserved specifically for open mat session where you meet and roll with guys you don’t usually see during training.

PURPLE BELT (12-16 points)

You balance your life with BJJ, career/school and social networks. Sometimes you skip on training to go to Tagaytay with your significant other. But before a competition, you take a leave or absent yourself from class. You know how to play it cool, and you act like you’re just chillin’ with BJJ — even if you know inside your heart that you’ve always wanted to pursue your BJJ passion all out.

BLUE BELT (8-11 points)

You’re not exactly a BJJ addict, but you enjoy doing the sport to keep yourself fit. You don’t like competing, because you hate being pressured on the mat. More than the moves, you like hanging out with your teammates, building your network effortlessly.

WHITE BELT (4-7 points)

You must be a newbie, or not at all a fan of the sport. You think that a crucifix is a religious icon to show your faith, or that being at the bottom of 69 position is a titillating thought.

BJJ APATHETIC (0-3 points)

You think that BJJ is gay. Or you are gay yourself, and you can’t handle being triangle choked or back-mounted without reaching orgasm.

What is your score, then? I scored 22 in my own quiz, and I am definitely a black belt in addiction to BJJ. You probably will tell me, “Get a life!” But, what the heck, BJJ is my life!”

Ps- if you scored less than purple don’t come to our next class, you make us look unhealthy.

Jiu-jitsu at the Venitian this weekend!

One of the biggest Jiu-jitsu tournaments ever in Macau is going to be held this weekend at the Venetian. Some of the best black Belts in the region will be competing, plus an official Abu Dhabi-Pro qualifier tournament for purple belts.

The tournament will be on Saturday and Sunday, from 9:30 to 18:00, at the Milan Ballroom at the Venetian (in front of Blue Frog).

Saturday there’s a GI competition for all belt colors and the winner of Absolute Purple Belt will travel to Abu Dhabi World Pro 2012 with all expenses paid. Sunday there’s a No Gi Tournament ADCC rules.

For those who have never seen a BJJ tournament, this is a great opportunity to check out the incredible atmosphere that these events always have, and to watch some great athletes in action. Plus, you can show your support to some of our local fighters competing.

In case you'd like to compete in October, here's a tournament that could be well worth it: the Thailand Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open 2011 in Bangkok, held at Lumpini Hall, on 22 and 23 October

Note that, on the afternoon of 21st (friday), you can do your weigh-in early and attend a referree seminar. Pretty cool!

The website is now open for registration here. All registrations should be done online and online registration site will close on October 19th 2011 at 9pm (Bangkok time).

Most of us dream about this or something similar since we were kids. Most of us dream of one day going to Brasil and train for a few weeks. Now let's be realistic! The most some of us will ever travel will be from Tatame.com to Graciemag.com. Now imagine you send out emails and plan a trip around the world visiting all the people that invited you to train with them. We didn’t do it, you did not do it, but Christian Graugart did.

If it's your first class, just bring a pair of gym shorts and old t-shirt. If your child already has a kimono please bring it.

We will check how many kids we have and the availability of the parents before we decide on other details. For now, it's at 5 PM every Friday.

For those of you who don’t know André Pederneiras he is, together with Wendell Alexander (Prof. Daniel Charles' Master) one of the founders of Nova União and “Shi Fu” of many great Brazilian Black Belts like Shaolin, Marlon Sandro, Robson Moura, BJ Penn, Jose Aldo and many others. One of the pioneers in MMA and considered by many as one of the current best MMA coaches in the world, Andre Pederneiras is well known around the world for being a great MMA fighter and coach. Soccer clubs after some of the best BJJ Black Belts out there!

Corinthians, Flamengo, São Paulo, Vasco! When you hear these names the last thing you think about is BJJ or MMA. Well, that is about to change! Corinthians is a famous São Paulo soccer team who has just signed a contract with Anderson “The Spider” Silva, a BJJ black belt and MMA UFC champion fighter to represent their football club. It looks like Anderson will be wearing the Corinthians' logo in his next fight against Japanese fighter Yushin Okami. We like this! Finally these guys are getting the recognition they deserve and making some extra $$$. With such a short career life span, looking at all the hard work they put in day after day, it’s only fair they get these and other opportunities. We believe!

The big questions now are: who will represent Real Madrid and Barcelona? And will José Mourinho's next move be in to the MMA world? Will there be a conflict between Dictator Sepp Blatter and his counter part Tiran Dana White? We already see a bright entertaining future in this. Don’t you?

You know us! We are all about the love for the gentle art, so when we came across youtube videos with titles like “Best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Highlight” or “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tribute", and then we find comments like this:

“Man BJJ is not a sport.........Not even close to having to dedicate yourself at all. BJJ is a lifestyle. It takes more dedication than life itself. Going to a gym to formally train in BJJ is the most privileged thing in my life. I love BJJ!. ”.

We just get all fuzzy and the tears start rolling down our always a bit scratched and sometimes bruised faces and we just feel like sharing. Enjoy!

Beware of fake Jiu-jitsu in Xi'An, China!!!

It’s difficult for us to treat this matter with anything but total seriousness. It has come to our attention that some less scrupulous people are teaching the art that we love so much without having the appropriate experience or rank. Needless to say that this is dangerous and that anyone attending these classes is in risk of serious injuries. We are not exaggerating, have a look at the video in the link below and right at the beginning you have some people doing simple front roles on their necks which, as you know, is a sure recipe for serious cervical spine injury (check out the 3rd guy doing the front roll). A simple thing that looks totally harmless but that can cause serious injury. Under proper supervision something like this is easy to correct, which only proves our point that the guy teaching does not have a clue. Academies like these should be closed before someone gets injured and brings harm to himself and also to the reputation of the art that we respect and love so much. Stay safe!!!

"It has come to our attention that one of our former students who trained at Checkmat Malaysia from December 2010 - January 2011 is now claiming the rank of purple belt in BJJ, and has opened a school in Xi'An, China. This person, Dan Adamant, started his BJJ training with us 6 months ago, as a completely new white belt, with matching white belt skills.

It comes as a complete shock to us that he is now wearing a brand new purple belt within such a short time frame. We would like to officially state that this person is not affiliated with Checkmat BJJ in any way, even though he has a picture of himself wearing a gi with a Checkmat patch on his Facebook page.

He will need to explain his training history, how he obtained a purple belt within a 6-month time frame, and the instructor who awarded the belt to him.

Some of you might think this is long overdue, others might think there is nothing to be changed and, finally, others just don’t care.

What are we talking about you are wondering? “BJJ rules”. In this case, something that is on everyone’s mind, we are talking about the "Jiu-jitsu boogeyman", “the Steroid Monster”.

You, the less fanatic jiu-jitsu mind, might be thinking: "what’s so scary?"

Well, in all or most sports there are clear rules about what athletes can and cannot take to improve their performance but, believe it or not, in BJJ there aren’t any guidelines or rules regarding performance-enhancing drugs, so pretty much anything goes.

Many wonder when will The Hulk show up in a BJJ world cup final. Guess now he will have to practice all the breathing technics that he learnt with Master Rickson and stay in is more human form if he wants to compete in the next Worlds.
