First two Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts from Macau!

On Dezember 28, 2015, Prof. Rodrigo Caporal promoted our first homegrown Black Belts. Luis Serafim and Tiago Afonso. The two, part of the five, founding members of the Macau Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Association have been training together for over 9 years and now see their effort being rewarded by Professor Rodrigo Caporal. Making them the first ever Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts from Macau.

Additionally, he also promoted two of our students to Brown Belt: Max Mak and Alex Jorge, one Purple Belt Dennis Chio and two Blue Belts Ho ChiWeng and Boom Truya.

Congratulations to them and to all the other students that also got stripes on their Belts.

We are very happy to announce that MacauBJJ is now officially under the teachings of Professor Rodrigo Caporal #RCJJ, Team Atos #Atos.

Last week we had the great pleasure of hosting a seminar with 2015 middleweight IBJJF and 2015 ADCC Absolute Champion, Professor Claudio Calasans. During this event with five top Black Belts, Vitor Toledo, Marcelo Toledo e Makoto Oga, we graduated some of our students and we unveiled our two new banners. #AtosMacau

Macaubjj no longer runs under the Nova União flag or Daniel Charles. The older members of Macaubjj decided it was time to part and follow a different pass.

Meantime the gym has grown like never before, new amazing mat area with official IJF approved mats, loads of seminars, with the likes of World Champion Bruno Amorim (Gracie Barra), Makoto Oga (Taiwan BJJ), Fernado Fernadez, Diogo Gomes (Rio Combat) and others.

We have also organized and equipped the gym, to provide our members a bigger range of exercises to improve their mobility, cardio and ultimately their BJJ.

So if you want to try BJJ in Macau make sure you pay us a visit and remember visit class is free!

UFC back at our door and Macaubjj more involved then ever!!!

Like most of you know the UFC was back in Macau on the 1st of March, with the main event between John Hathaway vs Dong Hyun Kim and the Final fights of TUF China. Like in 2013 UFC Macau, this year we had a lot of visitors has well, from all over Asia with the usual culprits from Bangkok, Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China.

But this year’s event was a bit special for Macaubjj with two of our guys, Tiago and Max, cornering two fighters from China that are managed by our long time friend Bill.
Jumabieke and Wang An Ying both fought their hearts out with different results! Juma lost in a 3 round grinder on judge’s decision and Wang won his fight with a 1st round doctor’s stoppage. Can’t wait to see them fight again and of course help out in anyway we can.
On behalf of MacauBjj thank you Bill for this great opportunity. We would also like to say thank you to Boyed Clark, owner of Phuket Top Team were a bunch of us went to train last May and would recommend to anyone, a great guy and head coach for the two fighters. It was an honor and pleasure cornering with you.

Big thanks also to Melissa Wang and the UFC crew for hooking us up with a few tickets. Our guys, Logan Zhang, Francisco Delgado, Ji Zhao and Robert Cai really enjoyed helping out in all the pre-show production work and being part of the whole UFC experience.

Even dough we were helping out at the fights, we still had time to do the usual Saturday 11:30 open mat with all our guests from abroad. Makoto Oga and Makoto Aramaki making the honours, plus Tomi, Kaise and Brad and a few more guys joined us for a roll, plus the usual pre fight burger at Morton’s.
Hope all off you had a blast! We sure did and can’t wait to see and roll with you all again in the near future.

Sorry for the long, long time since our last post…

We had a big graduation with an insane turnout! Our friends from Gracie Barra and Epic showed up and we had a record of 6 black belts on the mats. Big thanks to Professors, Rodrigo Medeiros, Silvio Braga, Mike Powers, Alberto Mina and Sandro Silva for showing up and making this an extra special graduation.

During these last few months we have also had the pleasure of hosting at our academy some really good friends. Prof Makoto Oga from Taiwan BJJ, Prof Makoto Aramaki from Hong Kong BJJ, Prof Diogo Gomes from San Francisco, BJJ Photographer Kinya Hashimoto and Prof Edison Kagohara from Japan and our old friend and one of the founders of Macabjj Patrick Goodwin from California and many others.

Meantime in the gym our MMA class on Fridays is getting some good numbers and our lunchtime rolls are getting bigger and bigger.

Hope you are all still training and enjoying the jiu-jitsu lifestyle!

Malolos, Bulacan – Nova União Philippines

Malolos is a small town on the outskirts of Manila, about an hour and a half drive from Clark Airport. Malolos is the capital city of Bulacan province and their people’s love for the grappling arts rivals that of any other place in the world. About 4 years ago, a small group of boys and girls, comprised of judokas, wrestlers and recent jiujitsu-ka have kick-started the BJJ-scene in the area.

"Inspiring" is the first word that comes to mind when you start grasping and seeing what they have done in the name of jiu-jitsu and what they've achieved by themselves in order to train and compete in the Gentle Art.

Well, if all you have to worry about competition day is cutting weight and what color kimono to compete in, let’s just say, you have it easy! In Malolos most of these kids can't afford to buy kimonos and the ones that can, save up for several months and then end up having to pay several fold of what people in other parts of the world have to due to the low value of the Philippine currency, the Peso. If you add up competition fees, traveling expenses and a bunch of other items that you need every time you go to a tournament, then you can imagine their love for the gentle art and what they go through to follow their jiu-jitsu dream. And things aren't rosy for them cause, if that was not enough, when they get to tournaments, they are discriminated against, because they did not fight under any black belt academy. To our utter astonishment we learned that if they get a medal they need to put their names under some other black belt based in the Philippines who they don't even know, who's never helped them or their jiu-jitsu in anyway.

That really motivated us at Nova União Macau to try and help out, not only by taking two black belts to train with this wonderful "Galera", but also to donate some kimonos and a bit of our experience to help them learn the gentle art that unites us all.

We were received by the most caring and hospitable people you will ever meet. Respectively curious they irradiated jiu-jitsu in every question, and they asked the two professors about everything, from techniques, to kimonos, about fighters, etc. All they really care about is jiu-jitsu and how to improve their skills and share them with others. And to us that's what it’s all about! So we hope we will be back soon to help our most recent friends grow their jiu-jitsu in lovely Malolos, Philippines!

Guys,

We are glad to be the bearer of great news: Macau BJJ is lucky enough and have the honor to welcome Prof Makoto Ogasawara to help us grow our Jiujitsu for a few weeks starting from 22Aug.!!!

The timing is perfectly fitting because of Prof Daniel's trip to the Philippines to help open an affiliated school there (Prof Daniel will be away from 22Aug to 3Sept).

Prof Makoto Oga and Prof Daniel Charles Pereira descend from the same Nova Uniao lineage, having trained and been graded by Nova Uniao's co-founder Mestre Wendell Alexandre. We need not, by now, talk about Prof Makoto Ogasawara's amazing Jiujitsu and competitive achievements, of which most of you should already be very well aware and also because at least some of us have become good friends with him. Let's just allow his Jiujitsu and teachings speak for themselves.

We have to shout-out a huge "Thank You", not only to Prof. Makoto Ogasawara - of course - but also to Taiwan BJJ, for allowing a little time off from their academy so he can spend some time with us. We are very honored, thank you.

It should also be unnecessary to say that all of you should be diligently present at every training session to take in the maximum benefit from this experience. We trust we will have full classes all along. What's more, we encourage you guys to approach Prof Makoto to see if he is willing and available to do privates (one-on-ones).

Time flies and we just had another graduation party last Saturday!

4 new purple belts from Daniels HK students, Louis, Donald, Eago e Long aka (Cabelinho), got their well deserved and long awaited purple Belts.

3 new blue belts where awarded to Prof Daniel Macau students; Sergio, Erick and Henry all got their blue Belts.

Prof Daniel also awarded stripes to his students, white, blue, purple and brown belt respectively. It was a great sight to watch considering that just 5 years ago we only had a purple belt present in our graduation and we had now a total of 8.

After the traditional whipping we had a great gathering in a local restaurant, were this time we hope all enjoyed the food and we were able to make up for last years disastrous meal.

Congratulations to all and keep on this great journey that is BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU!!!

Update on academy news:

Brief summary of what’s been going on at Nova União China - MacauBJJ.

Another Copa de Hong Kong was held on the 1st of May where some of our guys competed, taking home a couple of Golds. Namely Luis and Rodrigo who won their weight categories, respectively, in the adult purple and youth white belt divisions. The event could've ran smoother and we're hoping it gets bigger and better year by year.

After the tournament we were lucky to have Professor Ricardo Gomes come to Macau for a two-day seminar. And what a great seminar it was! Excellent techniques that managed to take everyone’s mind way from the scorching heat that was felt during that weekend. Hope to see Professor Gomes and his cousin “Marrare” again soon.

Classes have been going great, MMA getting bigger every week and everyone has been showing up and training hard and with that, “the best of news” we end this brief summary of what’s been going on at Nova União China - Macau BJJ.

ps - we also like to say thank you to Martinho and Sergio our training partners, from Rock Climbing Association, for a great Sunday experience. Everybody had a great time plus we got to train on our grips. Osssss!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, but we do have a life outside BJJ that some times requires our attention, even if we would rather be rolling!

Being a bit slow on the World Wide Web does not mean we have been slow at Nova União China. Quite the opposite, actually, many things have been happening…

So let's start:

First, important changes to our training schedule. We now have MMA classes every Friday and our NO GI class changed to Wednesdays. Don’t worry; if you are a "man of the cloth" like some of us are, we still have 3 GI classes 3 times a week, plus two new "open mat" sessions from 1pm to 2pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also new are our circuit training classes. 3 times a week on alternate days to the "open mat", also from 1pm to 2pm. For all the details, please check our Schedule section.

Now to our visitor news; like most of you know, we have been having some old time friends coming to visit and train with us and I’m happy to announce that this week 3 more friends will visit us all the way from Bangkok. We will have some special "open mat" sessions during their 5 days' stay, starting this Friday. What a treat having these experience grapples come to visit and share their passion for the “gentleness” with us all. Please show-up for classes and make sure you come and roll with them! You'll regret it if you don't...

Update:

Just thought we should let you know what's been happening lately and also share some photos.

Last week we had an amazing seminar with Prof. Cristiano Kaminishi, a renowned BJJ black belt and professional MMA fighter, current Heat FC heavyweight champion. From all the MacauBJJ "Galera", we're sending a huge "thank you" to Prof. Cristiano; we wish you the best and hope you come visit us again in Macau soon. And to all the guys that showed up and helped make this such a great event, a big "thank you" too.

Things are moving along at a steady pace at the academy. Thanks to Dennis and Jerry, we now have all the equipment needed to start doing some stand-up striking and MMA classes and, from your attendance at last Saturday’s experience, things are looking good and we hope to make this a regular class in our schedule (currently, this is still in the works). Prof. Daniel is also setting the place up with some great equipment for our "conditioning/circuit" classes, and very soon we'll have a couple of TRX machines installed.

But for us the most important achievement has been, without a doubt, all the new students that are joining us lately. That's the reason we are here: to help the sport that we love so much grow in Macau. It gives us great pleasure to see so many people wanting to learn the "gentle art". To all the new students, please be welcome to our academy and we hope enjoy this great ride that is Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as much as we do.

If anyone deserves to be called Mr Jiu-jitsu, then surely that's Demian Maia. We know most of you are probably familiar with some of his incredible wins in MMA, but for us one of his most amazing wins is in a BJJ fight which, lucky enough, you can watch in the video below. If you know anything about Mr Jacare (like we expect you do), then it only makes what you are about to watch that much more incredible. Enjoy!

"The Count"

Last Tuesday we honored the death of the founder of JJ and the man responsible for teaching what later evolved into Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Mitsuyo Maeda also known has Count Koma was born on the 18^th of November 1878, in the city of Hirosaki, Japan. Maeda who got his nickname "Count Koma" in the period when he lived in Spain, started teaching Carlos Gracie, son of Gastão Gracie, in the first decade of the turn of the century, who then later taught his brothers. Helio Gracie, arguably one of the biggest names in the Jiu-jitsu world, only learned the “Gentle Art” years later, as he was considered too young and fragile to learn Jiu-jitsu.

Checkout this great video, a homage to Count Koma, who is considered by many to be the father of our great sport.

Sinister Jiu-jitsu by “Sinistro”

This guy has great BJJ and has been a great competitor since he was a toddler, plus he has a really cool name that always makes us smile. Check out these variations to a back attack so your jiu-jitsu keeps being very “Sinistro”.

Free tip: next time you see your Brazilian instructor tell him “Mestre seu Jiu-jitsu é sinistro” and you will be on your way to that next coveted stipe or he will take it easier next time he taps your ass. Promise!!!

Graduation recap!!!

All of Prof. Daniel’s students gathered in Macau for a graduation ceremony followed by a mouth-watering Brazilian BBQ, where Prof. Daniel showed that he can, not only handle himself on the mats, but he also knows his way around a BBQ grill.

All of Prof.'s students from Hong Kong and Macau attended plus Prof. Silvio Braga and Prof. Makoto Aramaki and his students.

The promotions: a couple of students got promoted to blue belt, Michael from Gracie Barra and Dinis and Toby from Macau BJJ/Nova União China. There were some stripes awarded as well to blue and white belts, but the big moment was the brown belt awarded to Henry Chan. One of the best ambassadors of the gentle art in Hong Kong and the man behind Gracie Barra HK. Congratulations!

After the event we all went to Coloane Island for a delicious Brazilian "churrasco" and had a great time with our friends and families.
