Balao-class submarine

The Balao class was a successful design of United States Navy submarine used during World War II. With 120 units completed, the largest class of submarines in the United States Navy.

An improvement on the earlier Gato class, the boats had slight internal differences. The most significant improvement was the use of thicker, higher yield strength steel in the pressure hull skins and frames, which increased their test depth to 400 feet (120 m).

Tang actually achieved a depth of 612 ft (187 m) during a test dive and exceeded that test depth when taking on water in the forward torpedo room while evading a destroyer

Torpedo placement and angles.

Balao-class submarine

The Balaos were similar to the Gatos, except they were modified to increase test depth from 300 ft (90 m) to 400 ft (120 m). In late 1941, two of the Navy's leading submarine designers, Captain Andrew McKee and Commander Armand Morgan, met to explore increasing diving depth in a redesigned Gato. A switch to a new High-Tensile Steel (HTS) alloy, combined with an increase in hull thickness from 9⁄16 inch (14.3 mm) to 7⁄8 inch (22.2 mm), would result in a test depth of 450 ft (140 m) and a collapse depth of 900 ft (270 m). However, the limited capacity of the trim pump at deep depths and lack of time to design a new pump caused Rear Admiral E. L. Cochrane, Chief of the Bureau of Ships, to limit test depth to 400 ft (120 m). Fortunately, in 1944 a redesigned Gould centrifugal pump replaced the noisy early-war pump, and effective diving depth was increased.

The Balaos incorporated the sail, conning tower and periscope shears reduction efforts that were being retrofitted to the Gatos and the preceding classes in the original design, refining the reductions and reducing the sail to the smallest practical size. By the time the boats began to be launched, lessons learned from patrol reports had been worked into the design and the bridge and sail proved to be efficiently laid out, well equipped, and well-liked by the crews.

For the masts and periscope shears, the original arrangement for both the Government and Electric Boat designs had (forward to aft) the two tapered cone-shaped periscope support shears, followed by a thin mast for the SJ surface search radar, and then by a thin mast for the SD air search radar. There were minor differences in how the periscopes were braced against vibration, but both designs were nearly identical. About halfway through their production run, Electric Boat altered their design, moving the SJ radar mast forward of the periscopes, then altered it again a few boats later by enlarging the SD radar mast. Late in the war, many Balaos built with the original design had the SD air search radar moved slightly aft onto a thickened and taller mast. These mast arrangements, along with the tremendous variation in the gun layout as the war progressed account for the numerous exterior detail differences among the boats, to the point that at any given time no two Balaos looked exactly alike

Notable submarines

Tang was second on the list of a number of ships sunk with 33 and first on the list of tonnage with 116,454.

Her third war patrol was the most successful of any U.S. submarine with 10 ships for 39,100 tons. Sunk in the Taiwan Strait by a circular run of her own torpedo, her skipper Richard O'Kane and eight others escaped; some escaped the submerged wreck with the only known successful use of the Momsen Lung.

Tang's survivors were imprisoned by the Japanese for the rest of the war. After his release following the Japanese surrender, Richard O'Kane was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions commanding Tang during the convoy battles of 24 and 25 October 1944.

Cachalot-class submarine

They were originally named V-8 and V-9, and so were known as "V-boats" even though they were unrelated to the other seven submarines (V-1 through V-7) constructed between World War I and World War II.

An extensive study was conducted to determine the optimum submarine size under the treaty restrictions, factoring in total force, endurance, and percentage of the force that could be maintained on station far from a base, as in a Pacific war scenario.

Joseph W. Paige of the Navy's Bureau of Construction and Repair (BuC&R) developed the basic design, but the builder, Electric Boat, was responsible for detailed arrangement; this was fairly bold since EB had not built any new submarines since finishing four obsolescent boats for Peru.

The previous V-boats were all built-in naval shipyards. Cuttlefish was the first submarine built at EB's facility in Groton, Connecticut; construction of previous Electric Boat designs had been subcontracted to other shipyards, notably Fore River Shipbuilding of Quincy, Massachusetts.

Cachalot-class submarine

Although externally much like the later "fleet submarines," internally the Cachalots were quite different. Due to pressure from the Submarine Officers Conference,they featured full double hulls adapted from the Kaiserliche Marine's U-135, direct-drive diesel-electric propulsion systems, a separate crew's mess (reinstated thanks to EB's rearrangement of the internal layout; Portsmouth would follow soon after, and considerable space around the conning tower within the large bridge fairwater (which was drastically cut down in World War II when the 3-inch (76 mm) deck gun was relocated forward of the bridge). The 3-inch gun was selected because it was felt at the time that a larger gun would encourage submarine captains to fight on the surface against superior anti-submarine ships; this remained the standard submarine deck gun until early in World War II, when war experience showed that a larger gun was needed. EB relied on electric welding for the hull, while Portsmouth clung to riveting; during the war, the riveted boats would leak fuel oil.

The as-built engine specifications were two BuEng-built, MAN-designed M9Vu 40/46 nine-cylinder two-cycle direct drive main diesel engines, 1,535 hp (1,145 kW) each, with one BuEng MAN[1] two-cycle auxiliary diesel engine, driving a 330 kW (440 hp) electrical generator. The auxiliary engine was for charging batteries or for increased surface speed via a diesel-electric system providing power to the main electric motors.

Due to the full double-hull design, the external tanks proved too narrow for easy maintenance, and the MAN diesel was a constant headache, demanding re-engining with General Motors-Winton four-cycle 16-258 engines in 1936-38. On the other hand, the class made a major contribution to habitability, when Cuttlefish was the first sub fitted with air conditioning,[10] and to effectiveness, being first fitted with the Mark I Torpedo Data Computer (TDC).

Despite the calculation process, size reduction had gone too far with the Cachalots, limiting their patrol endurance. The subsequent Porpoise class were about 300 tons larger, and each succeeding class was incrementally larger than its predecessors through the Gato-class submarines of 1941. After three Pacific war patrols each, the Cachalots were relegated to training duties in September 1942, as numerous Gato-class boats became available.

Amalfi was a Pisa-class armored cruiser of the Italian Royal Navy (Italian: Regia Marina) built in the first decade of the 20th century. During the Italo-Turkish War of 1911–1912, Amalfi operated with the Italian fleet off Tripoli in September 1911 and participated in the amphibious landings at Derna in October.

In April 1912, Amalfi and sister ship Pisa led the way in attacks on Turkish forts in the Dardanelles. After the rest of the fleet retired later in the month, the pair of armored cruisers remained in the area to attack Turkish communications facilities. After the Treaty of Lausanne signed in October 1912 ended the war, Amalfi escorted the Italian king and queen on the royal yacht to Germany and Sweden during a 1913 visit.

As we continue to head up the Italian cruiser line, we venture firmly into the realm of paper ships: first up here is Tier VIII’s Amalfi.

+ For hit points: 42,800. This puts her firmly on the high end of heavy cruisers, slightly behind Hipper and slightly ahead of Baltimore.

+Taking a look at her armor protection, she has very good armor for her tier, retaining the 150mm main belt and 30mm upper belt that we talked about while looking over Zara. Just like Zara, she stands out in this department. The 150mm main belt is not quite best-in-tier - she loses out to Baltimore’s 152mm - that 30mm upper belt is still something you really don’t find on other Tier VIII heavy cruisers, and it makes her even more of a predator against light cruisers. Her extremities and deck armor are 25mm throughout. She also comes with something that Zara doesn’t: a 50mm strake in her bow armor that runs along the waterline all the way to the bow. Now, this is NOT as nice as the same strake you find on, say, Tier X Russian cruiser Moskva, for example. Moskva’s strake extends up well above the waterline; Amalfi’s does not. However, it does mean that she may be able to bounce the odd battleship shell when bow-on to someone. Incidentally, her 19% torpedo protection is also best-in-tier.

+ That’s notable because Amalfi’s firepower is heavily concentrated up forward. She packs one more 203mm rifle than Zara, mounting three triple-barrel turrets in an A-X-Y configuration that fans of American battleships or French cruisers will be familiar with. These 203mm guns are now 55 calibers long, with an even further improvement in shell velocity: 910m/s for the SAP and 950m/s for the AP. These things are going to be NASTY. I can’t wait to be able to play this ship on live and try out these guns. The reload of 16 seconds is worst-in-tier, but I think that’s honestly okay for the moment. The AP on these things is going to be brutal, and the SAP is a new-enough mechanic I think they’re hedging bets until live testing data starts rolling in. One thing that feels awful: her range, a mere 15.3km. This is absolute garbage and is worst-in-tier. Every single LIGHT cruiser in this tier has more range than this. I’m not sure what the deal is, but it almost feels like they got the range of Trento and Amalfi reversed or something. Atago and Wichita are the only other Tier VIII heavy cruisers with range this bad, and that’s a balancing thing because those ships are also the stealthiest heavy cruisers in the tier.

+ This is a problem that Amalfi doesn’t suffer from, with a worst-in-tier 14.4km base surface detection. This is even worse than Admiral Hipper’s 14.2km. I’ve no idea what’s going on with these range and detection values, something feels completely borked.

+ Amalfi is unquestionably the fastest Tier VIII cruiser, by four full knots. Her ability to re-position and control engagement ranges is going to be matched only by a Charles Martel with its speed boost active.

+ Her torpedo armament has a bit more punch here, as Amalfi graduates from triple-tube launchers to quadruple-tubes, one on each side of the ship. The torpedoes are the same as her immediate predecessor, the launcher simply reloads slower because there are more tubes.

+ Her AA suite looks decent, but it’s really hard to judge this stuff right now. For now, let’s just summarize it by saying that her long-range aura is pretty solid, her mid-range aura is worst-in-tier, and her short-range aura is fairly average.

+ For consumables, there’s no change from Zara one tier down: DCP, Full-Throttle Smoke, and a choice between Spotting Aircraft and Catapult Fighter. There is a change in the smoke consumable though; starting at Tier VIII, it now lasts for 40 seconds instead of 25.

It is only logical that this step would follow, because after the rework on the Aircraft Carriers, and combined with the Halloween event, we could take the hint that this would be the next step.

And to be honest besides the discussion if we should allow these ships on the main server, some are for it some against; it will bring new players to the game.

And let us not forget that Wargaming is still a company that has to pay its worker bees! eh, I mean employees of course.

So now submarines will be in the game, in the time to come, so we better learn to deal with it.

First this will be a submarine only mode, but eventually.. well who knows?

And in all fairness to Wargaming and to the players, these kinds of ships did have an enormous impact on naval warfare at that time so it would be inevitable that they would be introduced at some point in the game.

We need more subs?

Back in 2018 many of you have participated in the operation called 'Terror of the Deep'. This event allowed everyone to try a new class in our game — submarines. By the end of the event, it became clear that our players are highly interested in submarines and we should be engaged in full development.

And now, we are happy to announce that the first stages of closed testing will begin shortly, where the new gameplay of submarines will be tested. The American and German submarines will be the pioneers of the new class.

After the SuperTest submarines will be available for players to try on a special server, before being added to the main game client. Once introduced, the new class will initially be available in a special separate battle type only and this final configuration stage will last for several months. This will allow us to make additional changes to the new class under the conditions of the live server.

French cruiser Colbert, tier X:

- Chance of HE shell causing a fire is lowered from 9% to 7%;
- Main battery reload time increased from 3 to 3.5 s;
- Main battery firing range lowered from 15.5 to 13.8 km;
- HE shells damage increased from 1850 to 2100;
- AP shells damage increased from 2450 to 2600;
- Acceleration dynamics at the start of the movement reverted to the standard values.

Cruiser's firing range allowed her not to take upgrades and skills because, considering the ballistics, the range increase didn't give a considerable increase in efficiency and this allowed players to increase other parameters. Lowering the range will form a choice for commanders of Colbert.

Changes to shell parameters and to the reload time will lower the total damage output of the cruiser at the expense of fires. Damage per minute by shells remain roughly the same.

Good acceleration dynamics allowed Colbert to quickly disengage after being detected and made it too hard for opponents to strike the cruiser.

Colbert is designed to play at medium distances with the help of covers. For this playstyle to be successful, the ship must be able to gain speed quickly.

Recent changes to test ships have increased the recovery of Colbert's hit points with "Repair party" equipment to compensate ship's low amount of hit points. The old number of "Repair party" charges did not allow this change to be sufficiently realized.

The Battle of Vella Gulf was a naval battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II fought on the night of 6–7 August 1943 in Vella Gulf between Vella Lavella Island and Kolombangara Island in the Solomon Islands of the Southwest Pacific.

This engagement was the first time that American destroyers were allowed to operate independently of the American cruiser force during the Pacific campaign. In the battle, six American destroyers engaged four Japanese destroyers attempting to reinforce Japanese troops on Kolombangara. The American warships closed the Japanese force undetected with the aid of radar and fired torpedoes, sinking three Japanese destroyers with no damage to American ships.

After their victory in the Battle of Kolombangara on 13 July, the Japanese had established a powerful garrison of 12,400 around Vila on the southern tip of Kolombangara island in an attempt to block further island hopping by the American forces, which had taken Guadalcanal the previous year as part of Operation Cartwheel. Vila was the principal port on Kolombangara, and it was supplied at night using fast destroyer transport runs the Americans called the "Tokyo Express". Three supply runs on 19 July, 29 July, and 1 August were successfully completed.

During the final run on 1 August, a force of 15 US PT boats launched an unsuccessful attack, firing between 26 and 30 torpedoes. Four Japanese destroyers responded, and in the ensuing battle PT-109, captained by Lieutenant John F. Kennedy, later President of the United States, was sunk.By 5 August, the Americans were driving towards the Japanese held airfield at Munda on New Georgia Island just south of Kolombangara and the Japanese decided to send a fourth transport run to Vila with reinforcements.

Battle

On the night of 6 August, the Imperial Japanese Navy sent a force of four destroyers under Captain Kaju Sugiura—Hagikaze, Arashi, Kawakaze of Sugiara's own Destroyer Division 4 and Shigure of Captain Tameichi Hara's Destroyer Division 27—carrying about 950 soldiers and their supplies.The Japanese airfield at Mundaon New Georgia, which the force at Vila was assigned to reinforce, was on the verge of being captured; it would actually fall later that day. The Imperial Japanese commanders expected that Vila would become the center of their next line of defense. The Japanese operational plan specified the same approach route through Vella Gulf as the three previous successful transport runs over the objections of Hara, who argued that repeating prior operations was courting disaster.

New Georgia Islands. The Vella Gulf lies between Vella Lavella and Kolombangara on the western side of the chain.

The U.S. Navy Task Group 31.2 (TG 31.2) of six destroyers—USS Dunlap, Craven, Maury, Lang, Sterett, and Stack—commanded by Commander Frederick Moosbrugger, having been forewarned of the Japanese operation, was lying in wait, and it made radar contact with the Japanese force at 23:33. Moosbrugger's battle plan divided his forces into two divisions. Moosbrugger's own Destroyer Division 12 (Dunlap, Craven and Maury), whose ships retained their full pre-war torpedo batteries, was to launch a surprise torpedo attack out of the shadow of Kolambangara Island. Meanwhile, Commander Roger Simpson's Destroyer Division 15 (Lang, Sterett and Stack), whose ships had exchanged some of their torpedo tubes for extra 40 mm guns, was to cover Moosburger's division from an overwatch position, turning to cross the enemy's course. The idea was that any attempt by the Japanese to turn into the first division's torpedo attack would expose their broadsides to torpedo attack from the second division.

The two divisions could then switch roles if a repeat torpedo attack proved necessary, or alternate roles if barges were encountered, which could be dealt with by the second division's extra guns if necessary. Having learned the harsh lessons of naval combat at night after the Battle of Kolombangara, the Battle of Kula Gulf, and a previous PT boat skirmish, and having finally addressed the technical problems that had plagued their Mark 15 torpedoes since the beginning of the war, the American destroyers did not give away their position with gunfire until their torpedoes started striking their targets.

Dunlap, Craven and Maury fired a total of 24 torpedoes in the space of 63 seconds before turning to starboard and withdrawing at high speed, using the mountainous island to their east to help camouflage their movements. The Americans were operating on the assumption that the Japanese had nothing to match their new centrimetric SG radar; they knew that their older meter band radars could not differentiate between the surface ships and the island and presumed Japanese radars were no better. In the event, none of the Japanese ships present actually had radar and the looming mass of the island served to conceal the American ships from visual observation. Lang, Sterett and Stack turned to port to cross their opponent's T and opened fire as soon as the torpedoes started detonating. All four Japanese destroyers were hit by American torpedoes. Hagikaze, Arashi, and Kawakaze burst into flames and either sank immediately or were quickly sunk by naval gunfire. The torpedo that hit Shigure was a dud that passed through her rudder without detonating, allowing her to escape into the darkness. Shigure fired eight torpedoes as Hara retreated from the scene, all of which missed their targets

Siegfried has a very large caliber even within the range of other large cruisers — 380 mm. Despite the fact that the ship has only 6 guns, it is more than enough considering their accuracy, which is an unusual trait for large cruisers.

German cruiser Siegfried, tier IX:

- Secondary battery firing range increased from 5 to 7.6 km;
- Secondary armament reload time lowered from 4 to 3.6 s;

Siegfried has powerful guns that can deal good damage at long ranges due to accuracy and caliber, and the ship's armor layout helps in surviving return fire. The main battery characteristics make it difficult to effectively fight destroyers and lightly armored targets at close range. The changes will allow Siegfried to deal damage at close distance while the main battery is reloading even without skills or upgrades. This will increase the ship's efficiency at close range, supplementing the Hydroacoustic search with 6 km detection range of ships and torpedoes.
