Where to go for library & IT help

If you're unsure where to go for help in the library, well listen up! Or look to the image on the left.

All your questions can be answered by heading to the Library & Computing Service Desk in the Main Library. Here we can help you with many things, including:

looking for a particular book or item in the library
finding information for your assignments
referencing problems
accessing online resources and library databases

The Library & Computing Service Desk is also where you can go for help with IT problems, including:

password issues
wireless setup
printing
Word problems (like inserting page numbers, etc.)

What if I'm not on campus? I hear you ask. Well, try out our Ask-a-Librarian service.

Click on the button to the left to get instant online help through the chat service with a Librarian between 8.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, and 10.00am to 6.00pm on weekends.

This button appears on the library homepage, so keep an eye out for it!

Finding your textbooks in the Library

If you're not able to buy your own textbooks this semester, don't despair. We have a section in the Library dedicated to textbooks, DVDs and CDs that are in high demand during the semester, it's called the Reserve Collection.

Where is it?

The Reserve Collection is located behind the desk in the Main Library or to the left of the entrance in the Law Library.

Can I borrow these items?

You certainly can. All students can borrow two reserve items for up to three hours each. If you borrow an item three hours before the library closes you will be able to take it out over night, but it will need to be returned back to the library desk before 10am the next day.

There is also a closed reserve section, you can borrow these books for three hours as well - but they can't be taken out of the library.

How do I search for a book in the reserve section?

Head to the Library Catalogue and follow the steps below:

1. Click on the Course Reserve link in the top menu bar.
2. It's ok if you don't remember the title of the book, you can also search for the:

Subject name
Subject code
Lecturer name

3. Once you've entered your search terms, click on the Go button.

4. Once you've checked the title to make sure it's the correct book, click on Check availability of all copies.

5. Find the rows which contain Reserve 3 hour loan or Closed reserve 3 hour loan
6. Check the Due date column to make sure they say On Shelf (if there's a date and time listed instead, they are on loan until that time)
7. Write down the call number and locate it on the shelf, and you're done!

Finding Information for Assignments

Finding Information for Assignments will show you the best ways to find electronic journal articles, books and other resources using the databases and online tools such as the Library Catalogue and e-Journal portal.

RefWorks

RefWorks is a reference management software, and as a Bond student you have free access to your own account. We'll show you how you can use it to produce reference lists and manage the references for your assignments. For more information view the RefWorks page.

The sessions are only available at the start of semester, and are quite short and useful. All welcome - if you're a continuing student and would like a refresher, come along. View the timetable below for session times, and there's no need to book just turn up at the time that suits you.

Information for New Students

Welcome to all the new students for the 121 semester, and welcome back to all continuing students.

For new students, you should start to get to know what's available in the Library and how you can access the information valuable to your studies.

The easiest way to get this information is to come to a tour or complete the Online Library Orientation:

Online Library Orientation

If you can't make it into the library during the first couple of weeks, all the important Library and IT information for new students is available online. The Library Orientation will give you an overview of how to find resources in the library and online, borrowing, setting up your IT account and where to go for Library or IT help.

Take a Tour

Quickly find out where the different facilities and resources are, and how to do the basics, like borrow, and use the student printing system. Library tours will be on at the following times during Orientation Week:

10.00am - 10.30am, Wednesday
1.00pm - 1.30pm, Wednesday
9.00am - 9.30am, Thursday

Wireless Workshop

If you're wanting to hook your laptop or mobile device up to the Bond wireless network, drop by our Wireless Workshop during Orientation Week. The Service Desk staff will be ready and waiting to get you connected from Monday to Thursday, between 1.00pm and 3.00pm in the MLC. If you can't make it during those hours, just head over to the desk in the Main Library and the staff will be able to help you there.

Opening Hours over the Christmas & New Years break

Each year the library hosts the Smith Family Toy and Book Appeal, where you can leave an appropriate Christmas present for a child in need.

Main Library Opening Hours Extended

Exams are here and we've extended the Main Library opening hours even longer for this weekend. From tonight the 9th of December the Main Library will open until 11pm. View the full details of the extended hours below.

Feel free to bring in a coffee to the library with you if you need something to keep you focused during study. Just remember to put a lid on it and make sure you throw your rubbish in the bin on the way out.

Summon mobile and the iLearn app

Did you know you can search Summon on your mobile? There's no app for it yet but there is a mobile friendly webpage. Below is a screenshot of a search for a book in the library which shows you some useful info on the item like whether it's a book or ebook, if it's on loan or in the library and where on the shelves it's located. Just all the important stuff!

Something there is an app for is iLearn, so now you can view course information on your iPhone/iPod/iPad. The actual app is called Blackboard Mobile Learn. Once you've downloaded it from the app store, you can search for Bond University like in the first screenshot below. Then log in using your Bond username and password.You'll then be able to choose the course you want to look at in iLearn. The second screenshot gives you an example of the features available to use in the app.

There's lots of useful apps and mobile friendly sites you can use for your study. Stay tuned for more info about these in the future on The L Files.

IS Technology Showcase

Recently Information Services celebrated the range of new technologies launched this year with the IS Technology Showcase. The event was attended by Bond staff and students who were able to see demos of new systems and products, question the 'techsperts' and vote in the Peoples Choice award for most popular new system.

The event was launched by Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Gary Marchant. Special guest Professor Tom Cochrane, DVC Technology, Information and Learning Support at QUT spoke on the future role of technology in Universities.

Here are the featured technologies:

Windows 7
Windows 7 is being rolled out across Bond over the next couple of months. Training sessions will be advertised.
Bond University Library and Computing Facebook
The Library now has its own Facebook page. Get news, tips and let us know what you think of our service.
Summon
Summon is a new library search engine which allows you to search across multiples resources at the same time in a 'Google like' way. You no longer need to go to the library catalogue to find books and to individual databases to look for journal articles (although you can if you wish). Summon will search all of these for you.
iTunesU
Access films, lectures, videos and other resources on iTunesU- now with Bond University content. Install iTunes onto your computer, then search for Bond University.
eduroam
Visiting another university campus in Australia or overseas? Connect to the Bond IT network via eduroam - a collaborative agreement between educational institutions to share access to their wireless networks.
MediaSite lecture capture system
The MediaSite system uses high resolution video and slides to capture Bond lecture content.
BondSync
BondSync is the Bond Student Social Network site. Students get information about social events, sign up for clubs, and share posts, messages and photos with their club members.
Student Computer Availability Map
This web based service allows students to view computer availablitiy in all of the Bond public learning spaces.
Gadgets and Gizmos
IS supports a wide range of gadgets and gizmos that students and staff bring to the university. Featuerd was a presentation on iPhone and the iPads regarding all of those technological 'bits' that are available though the Library and MLC and which make life that much easier.

Libraries open longer from this weekend

We're getting ready for exams, how about you? Our opening hours have been extended on Friday, Saturday and Sunday now so you can get started early for you exam study. Check out the extended library opening hours below from Friday the 25th of November:

Australian Standards available online

Need to get your hands on the full-text of a particular Australian Standard?

Access to a range of Australian and Australian/New Zealand Standards is available to Bond staff and students right now.

Some examples of what's available:

Risk management - Principles and guidelines

AS/NZS 2890.1:2004
Parking facilities - Off-street car parking

To access these standards click Electronic Resources on the Library Homepage, then search for Standards Australia Online. Here's a link if you want to have a look right now. Just type in a Standard Number or a word to search on, and click search. Licensing restrictions mean only 1 user can access this resource at a time; if you don't get access just try again later.

4th Year Psychology poster winner!

The 4th year Psychology poster contest was held recently on Friday, 18 November and the winner was Paloma Jain, seen her with her advisor Dr. Richard Hicks. Her entry titled; "The Influence of Self-Esteem on Maladaptive Perfectionism and Life Quality", was selected from a competitive field of 23 posters. The posters will be on display in the foyer of the 3rd floor, Library Annex until this Friday, 25 November. Congratulations to all the students for an outstanding effort!

An easy way to create a reference list

Here's a tip you can use to save yourself some time creating reference lists. We all know once you've finally finished writing your assignment, the last thing you want to do is spend another hour writing up your bibliography or reference list (that's if you have an hour to spare for this task). The steps below will be useful for referencing books and journal articles, for other items enter them manually.

The first thing you need to do is search for the item you want to add to your reference list in Summon. Once you've found the book or journal article, follow the next steps in the screenshots below.

Something to remember is that the items you save in the folder will disappear once you close the browser. Also, you will need to check the references created in Summon for inaccuracies. You can check them against the Referencing Guides the Library has created, or if you wanted to reference an item manually refer to these:

Download Ebrary Ebooks for 14 Days

One of our ebook databases - Ebrary, now allows you to download their ebooks for 14 days. Previously with Ebrary you could only read the books in your browser or copy and print a selection of pages. The new download feature means you can spend more time finding the best information for your assignments whether you're on your PC, laptop or mobile device. Just follow these instructions to download from Ebrary:

1. Locate the book you want in Ebrary.
2. Click on the new Download button in the tool bar.
3. Create an Ebrary account (your Bond username and password wont work if you try to enter it).
4. Make sure you have Adobe Digital Editions (free) downloaded on your computer or if you're using a mobile device download something like Bluefire Reader (also free).
5. From the download page select the download option and click OK. You also have the option to download a PDF version of a whole chapter of the book or a selected page range of up to 40 pages.

You can find all Ebrary books by searching the library catalogue or Summon, so if you've got a topic in mind, try searching there first.

Just finished mid-semester exams? Well, some students haven't.

At this time of year a lot of you may be just relaxing now the stress of mid-semester exams is over. However, some people have assessment due during the next few weeks and are still studying hard. We would just like to remind everyone of the importance of being aware of your actions during this time. So consider several things:

keeping quiet in the silent study zones
remembering to shut the door to your group study room (or consider booking a study room for discussions)
taking your skype/mobile calls outside (as we all sometimes raise our voice without really noticing)

If you're wanting to focus without distractions we recommend going to Level 3 or 4 of the Main Library or Level 3 of the Law Library. Or if your looking to collaborate or do some group work head to Level 2 of the Main Library, book a group study room or use the MLC. Just remember how you study best and be considerate to those around you doing that exact task.

Read The Australian Newspaper Online for Free

All Bond staff and students can get free access to The Australian daily newspapers online through PressDisplay.

PressDisplay provides instant access to over 1900 newspapers from 92 countries. Each newspaper is displayed in full colour and in their original page layout. PressDisplay is easy to access from your computer or mobile device.

You can search for topics of interest, browse your favourite newspapers from around the world, listen to or print selected articles or even translate them into 12 different languages.

Go to the Library homepage
Select the Electronic Resources link under the search box
Search for PressDisplay in the search box

Answer our IT Quality Survey

This week we sent out an email to all staff and students asking them to complete a short IT service quality survey. We're just wanting to get some feedback from you about what you thought of the service you recieved from us, e.g. getting help with connecting to the wireless network, resetting you password or givinng us a call to get help with a computer problem.

This survey will help us to provide a better service to you as well as letting us benchmark ourselves against other universities. So it would be fantastic if everyone took 10 minutes to answer the questions. As a small incentive we're giving away a $50 eftpos gift card at the end of each week for the next two weeks to a lucky staff or student who answers the survey.

You have until the 28th of October to answer the survey. To access it just click on the link provided in the email sent out on Monday 17th October.

eBook Survey Results

Recently the Librarian's went around the Library and got some students to fill out a short survey about ebooks. We also had an online version of the survey on The L Files, so we'd like to share with you some of the results of the survey.

69% of you read ebooks but 56% prefer print books

Print books were generally preferred because of the ability to take notes and easier for scanning/flicking through pages with one respondent commenting:

“I like being able to flick through books, pick them up, quickly refer to different parts, make margin notes (in my personal law books, of course) and highlight. You can't do that with eBooks... it makes 'active reading' so much harder!”

Many people mentioned they prefered ebook because they could use them immediately:

“More books should be made accessible online as we can always get a copy this way and not have to wait for the printed copy to be returned!”

Only 34% of people had used EBL before

We also wanted to find out how many of you had used one of our ebook databases called EBL. Turns out, only a third of the respondents had. As a result of taking the survey a few of the respondents were now interested in getting to use it:

"I like the idea of it :) now I'm looking forward to using it!"

If you're one of those people who haven't used EBL before, you can find EBL ebooks through searching Summon, the Library Catalogue or going directly to EBL from the Electronic Resources page.

Need some help finding information for assignments?

Got your first assignment due and not really sure where to start? We had some library classes on earilier in the semester, but if you missed them here's a summary of some of the Library's key tips for getting information for assignments.

When you write your assignment you need to give concrete examples (ie, from research) to support your statements. Instead of using Google to look for information to cite in your assignment you should try the library databases where you'll be able to find up-to-date journal articles (scholarly and peer reviewed) on your topic. There are several databases you could try for your first search:

Each of these databases cover a wide range of topics and subjects like business, science and humanities. They are also pretty easy to use, have a look at the video below showing a demonstration about searching Ebsco.

If you're a Google fan you might want to give Summon a try (the search box on the Library homepage). Summon allows you to search across about 80% of the Library's electronic resources. So you don't always have to go to each individual database to see what information is available on your topic.

Remember you need to reference other peoples ideas in your assignment. This will allow your tutor or lecturer to find out exactly where your information came from. The library website has referencing guides which provide some instructions on how to reference books, journal articles, etc.

If you find referencing and creating bibliographies really time consuming and confusing you might be interested in using RefWorks.

RefWorks is a referencing management tool which can help you with your in-text citations, bibliographies and creating a place where all the information you find for your assignments can be stored. The Library has three RefWorks classes on this week:

12pm Wednesday 5th October
12pm Thursday 6th October

Did you know you have access to over 25,000 ebooks through the library? We have subscribed to an ebook service called EBL which contains a huge number of academic and fiction books. These ebooks are available 24 hours and you don't even have to step into the library to use them.
