About 35,000 refugees, believed to be mainly Syrian Kurds, have entered Iraq since last Thursday, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said. At least 5,100 people crossed the border on Tuesday, fleeing the civil war in Syria. While the fighting persists more people will find themselves in the state of refugee... Η κατάρρευση του Μυκηναϊκού και άλλων σημαντικών πολιτισμών της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου πριν από περίπου 3.200 χρόνια, καλύπτεται με πέπλο μυστηρίου, με πλήθος εξηγήσεων να δίνονται μεταξύ των οποίων οι αλλαγές στο κλίμα και το περιβάλλον. Μια νέα επιστημονική γαλλο-βελγική έρευνα υποστηρίζει την άποψη ότι η κλιματική αλλαγή και συγκεκριμέναμια παρατεταμένη ξηρασία διάρκειας περίπου 300 ετών ήταν κυρίως υπεύθυνη για την κατάρρευση των Μυκηναίων, των Χετταίων της Ανατολίας και άλλων πολιτισμών της Ύστερης Εποχής του Χαλκού.

Οι ερευνητές, με επικεφαλής τον αρχαιολόγο Ντέιβιντ Κανιέβσκιτου Πανεπιστημίου Πολ Σαμπατιέ της Τουλούζης, που έκαναν τη σχετική δημοσίευση στο περιοδικό PLoS ONE, μελέτησαν υπολείμματα γύρης και πλαγκτού, που βρέθηκαν σε διαδοχικά ιζήματα του βυθού μιας αρχαίας λίμνης στη Λάρνακα της Κύπρου, η οποία κάποτε ήταν λιμάνι, αλλά μετά (γύρω στο 1350 πΧ) περικλείστηκε από την ξηρά.

Μέσω της ανάλυσης των στοιχείων που βρήκαν στη λίμνη, οι ερευνητές δημιούργησαν μια εικόνα για τις διαχρονικές μεταβολές του κλίματος που συνέβησαν στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου και της Μέσης Ανατολής.

Το βασικό συμπέρασμά τους είναι ότι η κλιματική αλλαγή και κυρίως η χρόνια ξηρασία μετά τον 13ο αιώνα πΧ προκάλεσαν μια σειρά από πολέμους, λιμούς και εσωτερικές αναταραχές, που με τη σειρά τους επέφεραν την κατάρρευση κάποτε ισχυρών και ένδοξων πολιτισμών, μεταξύ των οποίων αυτού που ανθούσε στην προϊστορική Ελλάδα, του Μυκηναϊκού.

The case of Saudi Princess Meshael Alayban, accused of human trafficking in the U.S., has caused a stir throughout the world. But do you know how the story was uncovered?

A few weeks ago, the victim, identified as 'Jane Doe,' escaped Alayban’s home where she alleges she was forced to work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week; her passport held by Alayban to prevent escape. Jane Doe then flagged down a bus, explained her situation to another passenger who helped her phone police. When the police went to investigate, they found four other women at the home claiming to be in the same situation¹.

Modern slavery is a crime that survives hidden from the view of the public, but occasionally, it’s there, right in front of us. It could happen overtly – a woman escaping a home in which she was trapped or a boy summoning the courage to trust a stranger – or a more subtle scene in an airport where something just doesn’t look right. The bottom line is, at any moment, a person trapped in the nightmare of modern slavery could be trying to get our attention and we all need to be ready to help.

Hours ago, Princess Alayban was supposed to face charges of human trafficking in a California court but didn't show up. Annoyed, the judge moved her court date.

Send a message of solidarity that we all stand with the passenger on the bus who took action to protect another by ensuring millions of people know how to spot a problem AND what to do.

No loans for students who engage in protests, chant slogans: Loan board

Banners in support of the Gezi protests were opened during this year's graduation ceremony at the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) campus in Ankara.

No education loans will be granted to students who engage in resistance, stage boycotts, chant slogans or become involved in similar activities, according to newly announced conditions by the Higher Education Loans and Dormitories Institution (KYK), Turkey’s official student loan institution.

The precondition states that those who engage in “resistance, boycotts, occupations, writing, painting [in public spaces], chanting slogans and the like,” will not be eligible for student loans, as such activity constitutes a “violation of the right to an education,” according to the KYK.

“In the education institutions he/she attends, in its extensions in the dormitory he/she resides, outside of the education institution or the dormitory, either solely or collectively, in whichever form, those who are concerned with events of anarchy and terrorism, engaging in behaviors violating the right to education (resistance, boycott, occupation, writing, painting, slogan-chanting, et cetera), whether attempted partially or fully,” are classified as ineligible alongside those who carry any sort of firearm or sharp device.

«Τους "ανακάλυψα" στο τέλος της ημέρας. Ημουν όλη μέρα στα ερείπια και έβλεπα τους διασώστες αλλά και πολίτες να βγάζουν τραυματισμένους εργάτες από τα συντρίμμια. Θυμάμαι ακόμα τα τρομαγμένα μάτια των συγγενών. Ημουν εξαντλημένη, τόσο πνευματικά όσο και σωματικά.

Ξαφνικά, ανακάλυψα το ζευγάρι αυτό, αγκαλιασμένο στα ερείπια. Το αίμα από τα μάτια του άνδρα έτρεχε σαν δάκρυ. Όταν τους είδα δεν μπορούσα να το πιστέψω. Τους αισθάνθηκα σαν δικούς μου ανθρώπους. Τους έβλεπα τις τελευταίες τους στιγμές να κάθονται έτσι αγκαλιασμένοι, προσπαθώντας ό ένας να σώσει τον άλλο.

On October 9, 2012, 15-year old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in response to her campaign against the destruction of girls schools in Pakistan. In the face of terror, Malala risked her life to speak out for the rights of girls everywhere. Malala's bravery has sparked a global movement and we believe the Nobel Foundation should give her the Nobel Peace Prize.

The first step in the process is to get Malala nominated for the prize and only certain people, like a national politician, can do this. That’s why I am asking UK Foreign Secretary William Hague, Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander and the three main party leaders David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband to nominate Malala.

Malala doesn’t just represent one young woman, she speaks out for all those who are denied an education purely on the basis of their gender. I am one of those women. I was born in the UK but when I was 16 I was taken out of school, sent to Pakistan and forced into a marriage.

While my friends completed their GCSE’s and A-levels I was trapped, afraid of what would happen to me if I resisted. Eventually, I managed to escape back to the UK and when I was 28 I was finally able return to education, but I still think about the years I missed. I also think about all the other girls in our communities today who are in the same situation. I know there are girls like Malala here in the UK.

A Nobel Peace Prize for Malala will send a clear message that the world is watching and will support those who stand up for gender equality and universal human rights, including the right to education for girls.

Worldwide support:This is a global campaign, calling on multiple countries to nominate Malala. While Tarek Fatah, the person who started the first 'Nobel Prize for Malala' petition, lives in Canada, almost half the people who have signed the petition come from countries around the world.

Now people are setting up this same petition in their own country asking for their political leaders to come together to nominate Malala for the Nobel Prize.

The counter on this petition reflects the cumulative efforts of these petitions from around the world.
