4) Burano Island: Take in the brightly-coloured buildings as you stroll around this island. It is usually less crowded than other parts of Venice, and is perfect if you're looking for some quiet time alone or with your significant other.

WITH its picture-perfect canals and waterside palazzi, Venice is a romantic idyll. No wonder 18 million tourists pile onto the floating city each year. But what is surprising is that the embattled residents still manage to carve out a hometown for themselves — a pastiche of in-the-know restaurants, underground bars, quiet piazzas and calmer, outlying islands. And that’s not counting all the cultural offerings that Venetians take full advantage of. The cool art scene now goes beyond the Biennale. And instead of sinking, architectural icons have re-emerged as new landmarks.

4 p.m.
1) MODERN INSTALLATION

Venice’s artsy side is on display at the new Punta della Dogana (Dorsoduro 2; 39-041-523-1680; palazzograssi.it), the city’s former customs house that was transformed into a museum to hold part of the sizable art collection of the luxury goods magnate François Pinault. Completed last year, it was designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who left the bones of the stunning landmark intact but created light and airy galleries for the heavyweight contemporary work. The view from the sidewalk is just as impressive, looking back onto the Grand Canal and across to Giudecca — keep an eye out for Charles Ray’s sculpture “Boy With Frog,” his first outdoor installation.

Dismayed by the city’s reputation for high prices and mediocre food, a consortium of restaurants formed Ristoranti della Buona Accoglienza (veneziaristoranti.it), or the Restaurants of Good Welcome, with a pledge to offer transparent pricing, full disclosure of ingredients and a commitment to culinary traditions. Among the outstanding members is Alle Testiere (Castello 5801; 39-041-522-7220; www.osterialletestiere.it), a nine-table establishment owned by a group of young Venetians that serves seasonal and local seafood like gnocchi with calamaretti and fresh grilled sea bass. Pair with a regional wine like Orto, a grassy white made in Sant’ Erasmo, an island in the Venetian Lagoon. Entrees run from 25 euros, or $34 at $1.36 to the euro, pastas from 19 ($26). Be sure to make a reservation.

3) BAR SCENE

New hotel bars have woken up the city’s once-sleepy night life. Among the current hot spots is the PG, a restaurant and bar at the recently opened Palazzina Grassi (San Marco 3247; 39-041-528-4644; palazzinagrassi.it), a 16th-century palazzo that was transformed by Philippe Starck into a design hotel. Johnny Depp held court there when filming “The Tourist,” and a pop-up of Amy Sacco’s Bungalow 8 relocated to the lobby during the Venice Film Festival this year.

Carlo Scarpa, the architectural godfather of Venetian modernists, is back in vogue. See why at the Fondazione Scientifica Querini Stampalia (Santa Maria Formosa Castello 5252; 39-041-271-1411; querinistampalia.it; 10 euros), where he transformed the garden and ground floor into a modernist haven in the early 1960s. Upstairs a quiet library is a great spot to read a newspaper with locals on the weekends or to see the painting “Presentation of Jesus in the Temple” by Giovanni Bellini, one of the city’s underappreciated masterpieces.

5) SET IN STONE

In another example of the city’s new artistic drive, the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art (Santa Croce 2076; 39-041-524-0695; museiciviciveneziani.it), housed in a white marble palazzo from the 17th century, is showcasing 40 works in steel, glass and stone by Tony Cragg, a sculptor from Liverpool. The contrast between the 21st-century work and the Baroque interiors is striking, and a recently restored second-floor gallery showcases Mr. Cragg’s pieces alongside those of Rodin. Afterward take a walk on the winding streets behind the museum, a residential enclave away from the tourist fray.

6) NOTHING FISHY

Seafood doesn’t get much fresher than at Pronto Pesce (Pescheria Rialto, San Polo 319; 39-041-822-0298; prontopesce.it), a tiny street-front bar that sits next to the city’s fish market. Specials change daily, but seafood couscous, tangy anchovies under olive oil and marinated mackerel make regular appearances, along with more substantial primi like gnocchi with squid ink. Glasses of house white or bottles like Brigaldara’s Garda Garganega round out a delightful meal. Grab a stool and watch the market close up shop for the day. Appetizers from 1.50 euros, pastas from 15.

7) HANDSOME ATELIERS

Forget kitschy masks and imitation Murano glass. The streets radiating off bustling Campo Santo Stefano as far as the Grand Canal are lined with one-of-a-kind galleries and small boutiques. Galleria Marina Barovier (San Marco 3202; 39-041-523-6748; barovier.it; by appointment) carries hard-to-find vintage glass pieces and items by contemporary artists that end up in museum collections. Chiarastella Cattana (San Marco 3357; 39-041-522-4369) makes tablecloths, cushion covers and duvets from luscious fabrics of her own design. Nearby, Cristina Linassi (San Marco 3537; 39-041-523-0578; cristinalinassi.it) has silk lingerie and gossamer nighties that look straight out of Sophia Loren’s closet circa 1950.

8) CICCHETTI CIRCUIT

The debate over the city’s best cicchetti, or old-style tapas, is as fiery for Venetians as is politics or religion. The good news is you don’t have to choose just one. A tour might start at the bar of Trattoria da Fiori (San Marco 3461; 39-041-523-5310), where artists and residents nibble on polpette di carne (meatballs) and sip glasses of tocai. At the sleeker Naranzaria (San Polo 130; 39-041-724-1035; naranzaria.it), try the light spinach pie with a glass of wine (many of the wines offered come from the owner Count Brandolini’s own vineyards). Nearby, Cantina do Mori (San Polo 429; 39-041-522-5401) is an atmospheric old-school spot that attracts a well-heeled crowd. And Al Merca (San Polo 213; 39-346-834-0660) is the preferred choice for a Venetian spritz — prosecco, Aperol or Campari, sparkling water and a slice of lemon or orange. Cicchetti rarely exceed 2 euros a piece.

9) PARTY AL FRESCO

After dinner, the large Campo Santa Margherita becomes the city’s meeting point where students grab a spritz or beer at Il Caffè (Campo Santa Margherita 2963; 39-041-528-7998), and an older, fashionable crowd meets at Osteria alla Bifora (Dorsoduro 2930; 39-041-523-6119). On warm nights the piazza becomes one big multigenerational party.

Join residents at Pasticceria Tonolo (Dorsoduro 3764, Calle San Pantalon; 39-041-523-7209) for the cream-filled fresh doughnuts known as krapfen. You may have to jostle Italian-style for the beloved pastry (1 euro) that sells out by noon, but it’s worth the wait.

11) ISLAND IDYLL

If you’re planning a spring trip, do as the Venetians do and head to the outlying islands that dot the lagoon. Among the gems is Mazzorbo and its six-room inn and restaurant, Venissa (Fondamente di Santa Caterina, 3; 39-041-527-2281; venissa.it), which is open from March to November. Opened this year by Bisol, an Italian prosecco company, the resort has given new life to a walled vineyard dating from the 1800s. Paola Budel, the chef, who used to run the restaurant at Milan’s Principe di Savoia, serves fish from the lagoon and upper Adriatic, vegetables from the restaurant’s own orchard or adjacent islands; and wines from the nearby regions of Friuli, Veneto and Trentino. Recent dishes included figs from a nearby tree and snapper caught in the lagoon that morning. Lunch, about 70 euros. Afterward wander the main pathway along the waterfront, where a bridge connects to the more-visited island of Burano, with its vibrant pastel-colored buildings. The two islands capture what Venetians know well: you can escape the crowds in the blink of an eye if you are willing to cross the water.

IF YOU GO

Delta and Alitalia are among the airlines that fly to Venice from New York, from $663 in November. You can make your way around town by foot or vaporetto.

Opened in 2007 near the Rialto Bridge, Ca’ Sagredo (4198 Campo Santa Sofia; 39-041-241-3111; casagredohotel.com) is housed in a restored 15th-century palazzo, with 42 luxurious rooms starting at 300 euros, $408 at $1.36 to the euro.

The Novecento (San Marco 2683; 39-041-241-3765; novecento.biz) in San Marco has nine small rooms but also a fine staff, a charming garden and an excellent breakfast that’s included in the price; from 160 euros.

Outside the main island’s fray, the new Venissa (Fondamente di Santa Caterina, 3; 39-041-527-2281; venissa.it) on Mazzorbo has six nicely furnished rooms and makes a great base for exploring the lagoon. It closes Nov. 7 for the season but will continue taking reservations for spring. Rooms from 110 euros.

I Love Touring Venice Italy - Castello District Hotels

The Castello district is the largest of Venice's six districts, locally known as sestiere. It's in the east of Venice and, unlike some of the others, people actually live there. This is the least touristy part of Venice, which may be an attraction for many. The area includes many historic churches. For your convenience we have listed these hotels in approximate order of cost, starting with the least expensive. We have personally verified all website addresses making sure that they include English-language pages. The exception is clearly identified.
Santa Maria della Pieta is a casa per ferie (vacation house) rather than a hotel. It does occupy the upper floors of two palaces but don't come here expecting luxury. You will enjoy the rooftop terrace. Some of the rooms are devoted to families, if you reserve early enough you may get one with six beds. There are 15 rooms. The address is Calle della Pieta, Castello 3701. Their website is Italian language only but the translation provides the basics.
The Hotel Scandinavia, originally built around the year 1000, was once a luxurious Eighteenth Century residence. According to tradition this was where Desdemona met Othello, the "Moor of Venice." Be that as it may, the hotel is right near the Santa Maria Formosa church and a typical Venetian square of the same name. There are 33 rooms. The hotel address is Campo Santa. Maria Formosa, Castello 5240.
The Ca' Formenta was an unimpressive Fifteenth Century building completely restored into a hotel in 2003. There is a rooftop terrace. I'm told that the restaurants and coffee houses in the neighborhood are filled with Venetians rather than tourists. If you don't speak Italian bring your phrase book. The street Via Garibaldi, named after the Italian national, was laid over a stream. The hotel address is Via Garibaldi, Castello 1650.
The Hotel Londra Palace was originally built in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Among its famous guests was Tchaikovsky who in 1877 wrote the first three movements of his 4th Symphony in room 106. The hotel has a bar and an upscale restaurant. There are 36 rooms and 17 suites. The hotel address is Riva degli Schiavoni, Castello 4171.
The Metropole, like the Hotel Londra Palace, has a music connection. Antionio Vivaldi taught music there. Try to get a rooftop room, or at least stop by the rooftop terraces. The place is just packed with antiques and beautiful curios many of which can be viewed on their website. The hotel boasts a Michelin two-star restaurant. There are 67 rooms and a total of 22 suites. The hotel address is Riva degli Schiavoni, Castello 4149.

Venice has been described as a theme park for adults. It’s a fantasy world – a place you can’t believe is real until you’re there, and even then you’re still not sure. So if you’re looking for a hotel in Venice, you may not want to settle for the standard fare. You may have more demanding criteria than just finding a hotel near St. Mark’s Square. You may, in fact, want to stay in one of the unique hotels in Venice.
Now, it could be argued that every hotel in Venice is unique, simply because it’s in Venice. But you know better. This city is famous for its high-priced and yet still mediocre hotels, but there are a few properties in Venice that merit the title of “unusual” or “different.” These are some of the most unique hotels in Venice, each for quite different reasons.

Unique Venice Hotels

Ca’Pisani Hotel

Ca’Pisani is called a “Design Hotel,” so right away you know there’s something a little different about this place. After all, Venice isn’t known as a fashion city (although, to an extent, every city in Italy is kind of a fashion city). But rather than relying on the inherent beauty of the decay that’s all around the city, Ca’ Pisani Hotel has re-done the entire interior of the building – you set foot inside and you’re instantly transported into a chic, modern hotel that would seem fitting in Paris, Milan, London or New York.
The hotel occupies a 16th century former palazzo, and its 29 guestrooms been fully remodeled to evoke the Art Deco era of the 1930s – but in a way that makes the decor (and the hotel) feel modern even today. While there are some antique furnishings from the 1930s and 1940s, because they’re set against the backdrop of this crumbling city the effect is anything but old-fashioned. And there are plenty of actual modern touches throughout, so you won’t be stuck using a bathroom of the 30s, either.
Savvy travelers will also appreciate that the Ca’ Pisani is in the lovely (but not super-touristy) Dorsoduro neighborhood on the other side of the Grand Canal from St. Mark’s. The modern art collection Peggy Guggenheim amassed is on display in the museum bearing her name, and that’s right next door to the hotel. One of the bridges crossing the Grand Canal, the Accademia brige, is just a short walk from the hotel’s front door. And the hotel has an in-house restaurant if you just don’t feel like going out for dinner.
Low-season rates at Ca’Pisani Hotel start at around €160 for a standard room, and that same room can be as low as €175 in the high season. Breakfast is available at the hotel (and served outside in the summer), but it’s not included with the price of the room. WiFi is complimentary.

Abbazia Hotel
Cannaregio 68 – 30121 Venice
There’s history in Venice everywhere you look, and some painfully gorgeous religious buildings as well. Combine those two things, then turn it into a hotel, and you’ve sort of got the idea of the Hotel Abbazia. The hotel occupies a building which was once a 19th century abbey of an order of Barefoot Carmelite Friars – and there’s still a chapel there, complete with 18th century religious statues.
Today, however, the abbey is only a hotel – complete with a beautiful private inner garden where you can kick back and soak up the tranquil atmosphere (which is especially nice if you’ve had to fight the crowds of St. Mark’s Square). Perhaps most interesting is the bar/dining area, which still has the old choir benches lining the walls and the raised pulpit from which prayers used to be read.
Abbazia Hotel is a short walk from the city’s main train station, but you’d never know that once you’re inside. The rooms are nicely (if simply) decorated, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
A double standard room at the Hotel Abbazia ranges in price from €95-270 depending on whether you’re visiting during the low season, high season, or during one of Venice’s real peak times (like Carnival). Breakfast isn’t included in the price of the room, but you can choose to add it – and in nice weather you can enjoy it in the private garden.

Charming House DD724
Dorsoduro 724 – 30123 Venice
With a name like “Charming House,” it’s hard not to be intrigued. And one look at photos from this uber-fashionable hotel is all it will take to make you want to book a room. Like Ca’Pisani above, Charming House DD724 uses Venice’s dilapidation as the backdrop for a supremely modern interior – which, as it turns out, is a winning juxtaposition.
DD.724 is in the artsy Dorsoduro neighborhood (that’s the “DD” in the name – and the 724 is the hotel’s address), a short walk from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia Gallery and bridge. It’s not all sumptuous overstuffed furniture, but this place can easily qualify as seriously romantic if for no other reason than it’s almost hidden. The front door opens on a tiny alleyway, and there’s not even a sign out front. Plus, with only seven rooms in the whole hotel, there’s a feeling of intimacy here from the start.
While Ca’Pisani takes its design cues from the “modernistic” Art Deco movement, Charming House DD724 is all about today – the place is all about sleek design and clean lines, and you won’t find much in the way of bright splashy colors anywhere. But you will find all the modern conveniences (including LCD TVs and WiFi in all the rooms) in this truly unique hotel in Venice.
Room rates will range between €230-330 for a standard (depending on the season), and you’ll get a complimentary continental breakfast with your stay. And, if you’re lucky enough to find Room G available, you can have a breakfast in your room on your own private terrace.

Hotel Palazzo Priuli

In Venice, there’s no shortage of restored Venetian palazzos that have been turned into hotels. In fact, with so few actual Venetians living in the city anymore, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was only a small number of palazzi that were still occupied by locals. So the fact that the Palazzo Priuli Hotel is a restored 14th century palazzo-turned-hotel isn’t what makes this place special. Instead, it’s the fact that it’s been decorated to look like it’s still in the 14th century that makes it unique.
The furnishings in the Hotel Palazzo Priuli aren’t 14th century antiques – but they’re modern replicas of said antiques, and filling the hotel with pieces from when it was a brand-new building makes a stay in this hotel particularly special. There are 27 rooms to choose from, each one individually decorated, and if it weren’t for the modern amenities every hotel has you’d feel like you’d stepped back in time in any one of the guestrooms.
Palazzo Priuli Hotel takes its name from the prominent Venetian family which once called the building home, and which included three Doges and five cardinals, so the place still retains the feel of a prosperous family home. Fine art reproductions hang on the walls, and the nicest Murano glass adorns the chandeliers. The fact that the hotel is a short walk from St. Mark’s Square makes it excellent as a tourist hotel, but the chances of you feeling like an ordinary tourist after a stay here are pretty slim, indeed.
A double room can cost as much as €260 in the high season, but if you’re visiting in the low season you can enjoy the same room for under €100. And you’ll get complimentary breakfast and internet access included.

Palazzo Barbarigo
San Polo 2765 – 30125 Venice
Like the Palazzo Priuli listed above, Palazzo Barbarigo is another restored Venetian palazzo that’s been turned into a hotel. But before you yawn, let me tell you two additional factoids about this hotel – it’s right on the Grand Canal, and it’s been remodeled not to its original splendor but to reflect the style of the 1920s. Do I have your attention now? I thought I might.
Palazzo Barbarigo was a 16th century palazzo, and it’s now a hotel with 18 guestrooms – and every single room has a view of either the Grand Canal or the adjacent Rio San Polo. (For the ultimate in an upper class Venice experience, ask for a corner room so that you’ll overlook both waterways.) But despite this oh-so-Venetian view, when you step back into the hotel’s interior you’ll be transported to another place and time.
The decor in the hotel is decidedly modern without feeling stark or uninviting; in fact, the whole place has a dark and brooding atmosphere that makes it feel like the ideal place for a Venetian tryst (so if you opted to stay in the hotel for your entire trip, no one could really blame you). Should you want to take in the sights, however, Palazzo Barbarigo is nicely located – not only is it right on the Grand Canal, it’s also only a short walk to the Rialto Bridge.
A classic room at the hotel can range from €160-230 depending on the season, and you’ll get breakfast and WiFi included with the room. On weekends and during Carnival the hotel requires a minimum two-night stay. Over Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter, it’s a three-night minimum.

Bonus: Two More Unique Hotels in Venice

Venice isn’t the kind of city where new hotels are springing up all the time, given the limited real estate for expansion, but there are some unique hotels in the city that I hadn’t known about when I made my original list – so here are some updates.

Ca’ Maria Adele – This boutique hotel is at the upper end of what I’d imagine any normal travel budget would be, but if you’ve got a wad of cash that you’re itching to spend this might be a good way to do it. There are only 12 rooms in the hotel, and 5 of them are “theme” rooms – including The Doge’s Room, The Oriental Room, and Sala Noire. But all the bedrooms and every common area of this hotel are luxurious to the utmost, so even if you skip the themed rooms and go for one of the “standard” rooms you’re sure to knock the socks off whoever you’re traveling with.

Hotel Ca’ Pozzo – As with a few of the unusual-for-Venice hotels listed above, the Ca’ Pozzo is mostly unique because of its modernity. The interior of this hotel is minimalist and sleek, not at all what you’d expect from a building sporting Venice’s typical crumbling and ancient exterior. The hotel is located in the Cannaregio district not far from the train station and the historic Jewish Ghetto. There are 15 rooms at the Ca’ Pozzo Hotel.

As is to be expected from an excellently organized tourist city, Venice offers the traveler a complete range of accommodation to choose from. You can opt for a full range of star Venice hotels from one star to five star that meet your budget and specific needs. Besides the hotels, there are also a number of other options that are available to you. You can opt to get a taste of genuine Italian hospitality by opting for a stay with a family on a bed and breakfast basis, for a longer stay you could choose to stay in an apartment. There are a lot of options that are also available in terms of youth hostels, inns and guest houses and even in old stately villas that have been turned into luxury hotels.

Visitors Guide To Venice

The first rule a tourist needs to know about accommodation in Venice, Italy is that dealing directly with the hotels themselves will give you much better rates than would be possible if you booked through a middleman or agent. Don’t worry that the hotel may not honor the rate it advertises on its web site, by an agreement, all hotels are bound to the rates they advertise on their websites.

Many budget travelers also find it very sensible to stay on the mainland. Rates for comparable accommodation are easily half of that in Venice proper. The connectivity between Mestre and Venice is so good that it will not trouble you in any way. An added advantage is the much lower costs of food in the Mainland.
