The LG BD300 is a good looking player. From its beautiful black exterior which is a glossy black and nearly completely flat to the flip down media tray, the BD300 ranks up there with some of the more attractive players we have seen.

The LG BD300 is Profile 2.0 (or BD-Live) compatible. This means you can watch enhanced content on the disc and access online content as well. This opens up a wealth of features since everything doesn’t have to be contained on the disc.

With Netflix Internet Streaming capabilities the BD300 can stream HD content from Netflix directly to the player. Now there is no need to have to go to the video store. Netflix has partnered with big names such as Disney and CBS so far and is looking to add more.

Of course the BD300 can play your favorite Blu-ray discs in full 1080p high definition through its HDMI connection. The player can also upconvert all your old DVDs to 1080p resolution. This allows your old movies to look even better than before.

The BD300 features all the latest audio decoders as well. With Dolby TrueHD / Digital Plus and DTS Advanced Out you can hear your movies in incredible detail, up to 7.1 channels.

Summary of Reviews

The expert reviewers like the overall image quality on film-based Blu-ray discs. The player was able to render detail fairly well, but had trouble rendering detail on sources that weren’t film based. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue since most discs you buy are film based. The player also performed better on 1080i mode than it did on 1080p mode. This relies on the video processing of the TV rather than the player, so your image quality could either improve or suffer depending on your TV. Overall, the player received good reviews.

Consumers liked the overall image quality as well. The picture quality was far superior to that of standard DVDs. The upconversion also helped to improve the image picture quality of standard DVDs. The Netfilx Streaming feature was a nice feature and made watching TV shows and movies in high definition even easier. The BD300 has internet capabilities, but most consumers would prefer a wireless connection rather than having to use the Ethernet connection.

Summary

The LG BD300 is a solid choice for those that have to have a stand alone DVD player. The streaming internet capabilities and Profile 2.0 help set this unit apart from the competition.

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2

Two graphics chips. One card. And a whole lotta rendering fun: that's the basic philosophy behind the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2, AMD's latest dual-GPU 3D card.

Actually, that's the philosophy AMD has adopted for high-end graphics in general. No longer intending to duke it out with NVIDIA at the very top of the market, instead of producing one monstrous GPU, AMD's plan is to slap NVIDIA silly with two slightly more compact GPUs crammed onto a single card.

But there's a problem. In the past, two chips on one board has been a recipe for double trouble, not double your fun. Multi-GPU technology in multi-card form has always been marginal in terms of stability and reliability; a somewhat worrisome fact for a single card that relies on multi-GPU performance scaling for its very existence.

NVIDIA's progression

NVIDIA kicked off the modern day version of the twin-chip trend with GeForce 7950 GX2. That board worked fairly well at first. But then NVIDIA launched a whole new graphics architecture and, quite frankly, its driver team stopped caring about the 7950 GX2.

And drivers are absolutely crucial when it comes to any form of multi-GPU technology. Both NVIDIA's SLI platform and ATI's competing CrossFire technology use driver proﬁles to detect games and apply correct multi-GPU scaling methods.

If there's no driver proﬁle for a given game or if the game is not detected correctly, you're in trouble. At best, you'll get single-GPU performance. At worst, the game won't run at all.

The task for the new Radeon HD 4870 X2 is therefore clear. To be taken seriously it must expunge all hint of multi-GPU unreliability and deliver the sort of stability and ease of use that users expect from a single-chip graphics card.

Enticing upgrades

On paper, there are reasons to be optimistic. For starters, AMD has upgraded its inter-GPU PCI Express bridge chip from 1.0 to 2.0 spec and added a 5GB bi-directional sideport to each GPU. Consequently, overall inter-GPU bandwidth has been boosted from 6.8Gbps to 21.8Gbps.

Likewise, AMD has made a really smart move in stufﬁ ng fully 2GB of graphics memory onto this card. At really high resolutions, 512MB per GPU may not be enough to store all the game data.

When that happens, a graphics card is forced to use the PCI Express bus to fetch data. And that means hideously slow frame rates. But with 1GB per GPU, the 4870 should suffer from no such shortcoming.

Fully auto-magic

The 4870 X2 is also extremely user-friendly by multi-GPU standards. It shows up as single device for driver installation purposes and there's no need for users to even think about enabling multi-GPU scaling, it all happens automatically. Unlike most other multi-GPU boards, the 4870 X2 is also capable of full multi-display support.

But, what the 4870 X2 conspicuously does not do is to move the game forward in a technological sense. One day, a company will produce a multi-chip solution that behaves likes a single rendering device, thereby sidestepping current multi-GPU problems. But that day has not arrived. In essence, the 4870 X2 remains CrossFire on a card and is every bit as dependent on driver support as any other multi-GPU technology currently available.

The GPUs are essentially lifted from the single-chip 4870 board. It's the same 55nm GPU die running at an identical 750MHz. The 4870 X2 therefore packs 1,600 stream processor and a theoretical maximum compute performance of 2.4TFLOPs. One helluva lot, in other words.

Likewise, the 3.6Mbps data rate of the GDDR5 graphics memory is identical to the single-chip 4870. And like every other 4800 series card, the 4870 X2 offers DirectX 10.1 support. For what it's worth, NVIDIA's competing GPUs remain 10.0 bound.

ATI Radeon HD 2600XT vs Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS

ATI Radeon HD 2600XT Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS

While Nvidia remains quite dominant in the high-end segment, a much larger battle has taken place to offer the best mainstream graphics product. Currently the two leading mainstream cards are the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS and the ATI Radeon HD 2600XT, both of which are priced well under $200.

As you may recall, we reviewed the first GeForce 8600 GTS cards back in May, while the Radeon HD 2600XT did not hit shelves until late July. This gave the GeForce plenty of time to establish itself before the Radeon HD arrived. However, unlike many expected, the 8600 GTS did not exactly hit the ground running, as the retail price was quite steep at $200-230, giving existing GeForce 7 cards an edge as they were actually cheaper and in many cases faster.

Furthermore, the fact that the GeForce 8600 GTS brought DirectX 10 support to the table was somewhat pointless given that there were no games that took advantage of it at the time.

After some heavy price reductions the GeForce 8600 GTS has now reached a point where it makes sense to recommend it. But of course, there is a new player in town now, the Radeon HD 2600XT carries a MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of just $150 and specifications to match the GeForce 8600 GTS.

The Radeon HD 2600XT pricing does vary depending on the brand and specifications, as there are a number of variations of this product. While the majority of GeForce 8600 GTS graphics cards come loaded with 256MB GDDR3 memory, there are as many 256MB Radeon HD 2600XT cards as there are 512MB versions. We have found that the Radeon HD 2600XT can come fitted with GDDR4 memory as well as GDDR3 memory, which translates in prices ranging from as low as $100 and up to $170. The more expensive cards all seem to be factory overclocked and generally come with 512MB of on-board memory.

Today we will be comparing these two mid-range graphics cards head to head using a 512MB VisionTek Radeon HD 2600XT and a 256MB ASUS GeForce 8600 GTS. While neither product features overclocking out of the box, the Radeon has an obvious advantage in that it sports twice as much video memory. And while this may appear to be unfair, we have found that the average 512MB Radeon HD 2600XT graphics card retails for just $140, while the average price of a GeForce 8600 GTS sporting 256MB of memory is $160. That said, 512MB versions of the GeForce 8600 GTS are priced at over $200.

How the cards match up...

Since these two graphics cards are based on a similar architecture to that of their flagship parts, we can anticipate they are quite different in design.

The Radeon HD 2600XT is built around ATI's RV630 architecture, while the GeForce 8600 GTS is based on the Nvidia G84 design. Both are built predominantly for use with the PCI Express x16 bus, though the Radeon HD 2600XT also supports the older AGP interface - Nvidia just recently expressed interest in releasing the GeForce 8 series for those still using AGP through the use of a bridge chip.

Officially the GeForce 8600 GTS is designed to only support 256MB of on-board memory, but that has not stopped a few select manufacturers from doubling that number. At this point we do not believe the extra 256MB really helps the performance of the GeForce 8600 GTS and for the price premium the GeForce 8800 GTS (320MB) would become a much smarter option. The Radeon HD 2600XT can come with either 256MB or 512MB of memory and there is no real serious price premium if you go for the latter.

Let’s talk core and memory speeds as this really is where the two begin to show their differences. The GeForce 8600 GTS comes clocked at 675MHz with a memory frequency of 2000MHz. This allows for a theoretical memory bandwidth of 32.0GB/s which is still impressive for a mid-range contender (compare that to the GeForce 8800 Ultra's 103.7GB/s).

The Radeon HD 2600XT on the other hand comes clocked at a staggering 800MHz, while the memory frequency does vary from 1400MHz to an amazing 2200MHz, depending on the memory used. The GDDR4 versions of the Radeon, which cost significantly more, come with the 2.2GHz memory, while the GDDR3 versions like the one we are testing today generally come clocked at 1.4GHz.

The Radeon HD 2600XT features 120 SPs (Stream Processors) which is considerably less than the 320 found on the higher-end and more expensive Radeon HD 2900XT. There are just 8 TMUs (Texture Mapping Units), half that of the 2900XT and 4 ROPs (Raster Operation Pipelines).

This still makes the Radeon HD 2600XT look somewhat more powerful than the GeForce 8600 GTS on paper. The GeForce 8600 GTS only features 32 SPs - though they are clocked at 1180MHz whereas the 24 shader processors (120 stream processors) of the Radeon HD 2600XT are clocked at 800MHz. The GeForce 8600 GTS has an advantage when it comes to its texturing capabilities with twice as many TMUs built in this GPU.

The GeForce 8600 GTS also has a serious advantage when it comes to pixel outputting as it features twice as many ROPs. The 8600 GTS boasts two ROP partitions that can output four pixels per clock, while the Radeon HD 2600XT has just the one supporting four pixel pipes. The Radeon HD 2600XT runs its ROPs at 800MHz for a 3200 Mpixels/sec fillrate, while the GeForce 8600 GTS comes out on top working its ROPs at just 540MHz for a 4320 Mpixels/sec fillrate.

In terms of raw computing power the Radeon HD 2600XT can achieve 192 GigaFLOPS, while the GeForce 8600 GTS can produce just 113.3. When talking about Z-only processing however, the GeForce 8600 GTS is far superior as it can perform 32 pixels per clock while the Radeon can only do 8.

With so many differences to talk about, this battle cannot be played out on paper, therefore we must now turn to real-life tests to determine which of these two products comes on top and deserves the recognition as the best mainstream graphics solution currently available.

In this review I am testing the ATI Radeon HD 3450 inside of an HTPC machine, which is the ideal type of system for this graphics card. The ATI Radeon HD 3450 has a 64-bit memory interface with 256MB of DDR2 RAM. The card will also be available with GDDR3 RAM as well. The ATI Radeon HD 3450 uses PCI Express 2.0 x16 bus interface, though it is backwards compatible with PCI Express 1.0 slots.

The card has 40 stream processors and uses 128-bit precision on all operations. ATI’s Avivo HD video and display platform is where this little graphics card shines. A dedicated unified video decoder for H.264/AVC and VC-1 video formats is included. This allows for full playback of HD DVD and Blu-ray content with full off loading from the processor. The ATI Radeon HD 3450 us also CrossFireX capable and can work with ATI Hybrid graphics as well allowing increased performance when pair with a compatible chipset and mainboard with integrated graphics.

The ATI Radeon HD 3450 has 181 million transistors and is built on a 55nm process. The card has the previously mentioned 40 stream processors, four texture units and four render backends. The clock speed for the card is 600MHz on the core and 1GHz on the memory. DirectX 10.1 and ATI PowerPlay are supported as well. One of the best features of the ATI Radeon HD 3450 is the price, the card will retail for $49.

The specifications of the HTPC machine I am testing the ATI Radeon HD 3450 in are as follows:

Benchmarks & Testing
This card is not meant for computer users who plan to play lots of 3D games. The video card lacks the muscle needed for high-end titles currently on the market. As such I opted to not test the ATI Radeon HD 3450 with video games. This card is aimed at use in basic work stations and home theater computers. As such the majority of the testing on this card was done with HD DVD and Blu-ray movie titles. I did run 3DMark06 on the system and the results are below.

3DMark06
I ran 3DMark06 at default settings in the application and in the Catalyst control panel. The system scored as follows on 3DMark06:

HDR/SM3.0- 1681

I didn’t list he full gamut of readings for the ATI Radeon HD 3450 since as you can tell the card really isn’t aimed at gamers.

HD DVD & Blu-ray
Now we will get into testing the ATI Radeon HD 3450 and the HTPC machine for what it was meant for, watching movies. The card includes a DVI to HDMI adapter and onboard 5.1 surround sound so one cable is all you need to get video and sound. I don’t use a home theater receiver that can get the sound from the HDMI cable so I connected the test machine via optical out to my Denon S301 home theater system. I used a 42-inch Viewsonic 1080p HDTV for viewing.

The first thing that struck me was how quiet the system is. This is helped greatly by the fact that the ATI Radeon HD 3450 offloads all of the video processing for HD video content from the CPU to the video card. Further improving the noise levels is the passive cooling solution ATI uses on the HD 3450.

If I didn’t know I was watching movies on the ATI Radeon HD 3450 from the HTPC system I wouldn’t have known the difference on image quality. I typically use a Toshiba HD-A2 for HD DVD movies and my PS3 for Blu-ray playback. The small package of the HTPC system using the ATI Radeon HD 3450 is much better than having two large devices sitting in my entertainment system.

The passive cooling solution used on the HD 3450 along with the ability to use a lower performance, lower heat producing CPU means that heat output is low. This allows the HTPC system to run without issue inside cramped entertainment systems.

The dual format player plays both HD DVD and Blu-ray films at 1080p superbly with no stuttering or skipping of the video or audio tracks. Throw a Wi-Fi card into the HTPC system and you can take full advantage of the interactive features offered by both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. Image quality for both HD formats was every bit as good as the stand alone components I typically use.

Final Thoughts
Pricing out the machine I used for testing here, it would cost you about $1000 to duplicate the same system I am using. You can currently buy a standalone LG BH200 dual format HD DVD and Blu-ray player for $849.95. That makes the HTPC using the ATI Radeon HD 3450 about $150 more expensive. You could shave costs from the HTPC system by using cheaper RAM and shopping for sales to get the prices closer. However, even with the $150 price difference you can do a world of additional tasks on the HTPC system using the ATI Radeon HD 3450 that the BH200 couldn’t dream of. You can surf the Internet, check your email, and basically do about anything on the HTPC system you can do with any other computer, save high-end 3D game play.

What's peta2? We are an animal rights group that takes on anyone who abuses animals. From schools that don't allow the choice not to dissect to fashion designers who won't drop fur to fast-food giants that refuse to treat their animals right—if cruelty to animals is taking place, you can bet peta2 will be on it.
And not to brag, but we are the largest youth animal rights group in the world—maybe even the universe.* How did we get so big? Here's a lil' back-story:
It all started back in the summer of 2002, when PETA was looking to expand its animal rights family. Low and behold, peta2 was born (on Warped Tour even)!
On Warped Tour, the bands loved and nurtured peta2 like it was their very own. Soon enough, peta2 was ready to step out into the rest of the world (the World Wide Web, that is) with peta2.com.
Before you could say, "I Am Not a Nugget," peta2 was at every major music festival, interviewing everyone from Rise Against to Fall Out Boy and winning campaign after campaign for animals.
So that brings us right up to the present day, where we're still fighting the good fight for animals. Here are the top five ways we do just that:
Advice: We make cruelty-free living super easy by offering advice from your favorite bands, a helpful community on our message boards, and our guides to show you exactly what to eat, what to wear, and even what to put on your face!
Street Team:The Street Team is the place to go for campaign updates and any tips you need on being a better animal rights activist. You can request free stickers and leaflets, and the best part is that you can even get free stuff for keeping us updated on all that you're doing for animals!
