It's a matter of opinion, of course. Do you have any thoughts on it? How would you define chickens today?

If we're very interested in a topic, then beginning with a clear and complete definition seems like a good idea.

Regarding the new blog banner just published above, someone asked "what makes chicken exhibition prestigious"? You probably know that a long time ago, Queen Victoria awakened her staff, friends and other members of the royal family of Great Britain to becoming 'chicken fanciers'. It spread quickly to the population in general.

Being Queen is a prestigious position, therefore backyard chicken keeping and exhibition is a prestigious hobby. A brilliant leap of logic, of course. 😊 Not that anyone chooses a hobby for that reason, of course!

I'm becoming more and more an advocate for backyard chicken keepers learning what exhibitors must know and do, whether or not they show their chickens.

It's how people learn about classes, breeds, varieties, strains, and so much more. Knowledge is power, and it makes us self-sufficient, too. Imagine not needing to ask someone else to identify the breed of your chicken, for example!

It's a way to enjoy visiting shows more, taking great photos of your favorite chickens after you've bathed them, and taming them so they're easier to check on.

I saw a blog that said backyard chicken keeping should be more highly regulated. Then, some survey respondents admitted a weakness in their knowledge of biosecurity, health assessments, and diseases. YIKES!

It's understandable that the commercial egg and meat industries would be worried . . . chickens do feed the entire world. And, it is possible for disease to spread from backyard chickens if we don't know how to identify ill birds or follow guidelines for optimum care.

The survey was taken in 2013, though, so hopefully there has been an improvement.

Do you have an opinion you'd like to share ? Think we should each make more effort to share what we know ?

When a mama hen abandons her chicks midway through brooding them, what can you do to save those babies and bring them up to be happy healthy adult chickens? I was faced with that dilemma last week, for the first time. Unusual for an Old English game hen, but there's a first time for everything. Papa Rooster is an Old English game, too - these will be pretty chickens!

I had heard of people using a feather duster as a 'foster mama hen', so when these four little chicks (4th is partially visible, upper left) were orphaned by their indecisive mama, I went shopping. I had settled the poor little orphans in a small brooder meant for up to ten baby chicks, and added the new feather duster when I got home from work the next day. It's similar to the color of the hen, and I'm thrilled to say they are thriving now!

They snuggle together under those soft feathers and sleep snug as little bugs in a rug.

Yesterday, it was warm and sunny, so they had a little field trip . . . long enough to get this photo, anyway.

Watching baby chicks who've imprinted on a feather duster is far more fun than using it for its intended purpose. 😊

Have you faced this issue - how did you deal with it?

Worst Winter in a while for the North Cascades

'Harriet' may be ready to attend her first garden party of spring, but my current flock is just happy to see 48-degree temperatures and melting snow. Me too!

Power outages, ice everywhere and road conditions that ramped the stress up to heart attack level brought to mind a vision of Florida, except for the lack of gorgeous far-away snow covered mountain tops and evergreen trees. Funny how you get so attached to a specific topography.

Good news, my chickens are doing well! Fortunately, my chicken coop is insulated with tar paper between the siding and wall. Temps got down to about 20 degrees some nights, and water had to be changed more often, but, like they say, excess heat is worse for chickens than cold.

It wasn't cold enough to cause frost-bite of the single combed roosters, that probably happens more on the east coast, or eastern Washington. You probably know to rub the combs with a little Vaseline, if it's super cold where you are.

I feed my birds more scratch than normal when it's cold, they need extra carbs to keep their body heat up.

It was nerve wracking to see a red fox circling my place, but so far, no winter predator losses.

This is the first winter in more than a decade where I live with so much snow, and for so long a time. With 4-wheel drive snow isn't that hard to drive in; just have to watch out for the 'hot-shots' that pass you by like you're standing still - they slow traffic when they wind up in the ditch or wrapped around a pole within a couple of miles. The ice is really treacherous, though, especially on steel bridges.

Even though winter hasn't completely said 'adios', a lot of people I know have decided to get started with chickens. Problem is, they can't get to the feed store early enough . . . baby chick shipments are selling out in just a few hours! Spring has definitely almost 'sprung'.

Everyone wants Rhode Island Reds! Great layers, that's for sure.

If you shop at the feed store for baby chicks be sure to learn what the baby chicks of the breed you want look like - before you shop. Sometimes they have 8 or 10 tubs, and when one is almost empty they combine the breeds to keep all of them warm. You can find pictures of the adults and babies on the websites of a lot of the hatcheries. You won't want to end up with broilers if you're only interested in eggs.

Happy Spring and Fun Chicken Keeping!

A Carrie Wood Graphic, blended with love and with gratitude to the artists/photographers at Pixabay.com

It's that month of tantalizing chocolates, wine and long-stemmed red roses, sparkling baubles, and a certain question being 'popped' (sometimes wished for - sometimes not).

But for some of us, (also known as the chicken 'afflicted'-or 'addicted'), it's also time to think about brooders, fluffy baby chicks like the one above and . . . a future filled with your very own 'farm fresh home-grown eggs' for breakfast! "YES"!

To ensure harmony in the home, we should never forget those highly anticipated symbols of romance. (That $25 or above purchase could save a bundle) 😉.

However, February is also a great month to take some time studying chicken breeds, and think about our purpose in getting baby chicks (eggs, meat, dual purpose, exhibition?).

There is a lot to learn in recognizing breeds and varieties of chickens . . . commit it to memory, though and it won't leave you. Once a breed is accepted by the American Poultry Association (or another country's equivalent) and published in the American Standard of Perfection you can consider it to be rather permanent.

It's a rewarding mental exercise; at least that's the opinion of this book-worm.

Every breed is required to have:

A specific type of comb (and wattles). Single, Rose, Strawberry, Pea, Cushion, V-comb, Buttercup, Silkie (Walnut)

Skin color

Earlobe color

Number of toes (4 or 5)

Leg color

Body shape - "Shape makes the breed; color the variety"

Color/plumage pattern

Beak color

Eye color

Angle of tail

and, yes, even more . . .

Congratulations if you've already learned about the breeds and other chicken facts - you're well prepared to answer questions coming from new chicken hobbyists who naturally approach someone like you who is already a chicken keeper.

If the number of stores selling chickens, the growing number of new hatcheries, and the chicken coops we see popping up all over the place are any indication - there are no doubt many people who will soon look to you as a possible helpful resource on raising chickens.

It's a great feeling to be ready with accurate answers!

If you aren't feeling up-to-speed yet, why not study just one 'Class' of chickens at a time. Then, varieties of that class.

It is a lot to learn, but time goes fast when you're studying something you love!

Where to start? Depending on where you live - the British standard, Australian, American Standard of Perfection.

If you'd like to learn more about how to tame chickens, basics of exhibition, how to do a health check on your chickens, handling, etc. and get more enjoyment from the next chicken show you attend - you might like this newly updated book:

If you bought this e-book after it was published in 2012, you should be getting an email from Amazon letting you know that you can now download this update, at no charge.

This was the first book I'd ever written and in retrospect I realized it needed to be improved! Big time! Now, according to Amazon, this update is considered a "MAJOR quality improvement" . . . doesn't say much for the original, but I do hope you'll take the time to download this update.

Would love to hear your thoughts about it; just email scott@fortheloveofchickens.com. Or, leave a review, it will be much appreciated!

The paperback version, which should be published soon is 78 pages - and the original e-book was only 30-something. I believe you'll enjoy the content of this update - and you deserve it!

Because I don't appreciate chicken images in gray-scale, I chose white paper and full color for the paperback version - a bit more expensive to produce.

If you love chickens as much as I do, though, you'll probably appreciate the added quality.

This little book is so handy, measuring at just 6" x 4.25" and not quite an inch thick, this is one of those examples of big things that come in small packages! Ideal to have in your handbag or pocket, especially when you're at a chicken show or local fair.

Not JUST chickens - Ducks, Geese and Turkeys, too! Beautiful images, breed descriptions and lot's of "extras"!

Ever puzzled over breed names including words like "Mottled", Spangled", "Splash", "Laced", "Partridge", "Penciled", etc.? Well, not to worry; this little book solves those mysteries!

Well, 2016 sure flew by fast, didn't it? As I'm writing this, it's less than three hours until 2017 officially begins. Guess that's an indication of what a wild 'party animal' I am. No apologies, I do love my solitude. . . it's refreshing after long hectic work hours.

Hope your Christmas was very special! It snowed a little where I live, but I was able to get out and visit family; had a wonderful visit. Great food, and company, too.

Soon, we'll see signs of Spring, and thoughts will turn to things like gardening, and getting a few chickens, too. Right?

Will keep this post short, but just want to raise my glass in a toast to you and yours. "To a very happy, healthy and successful New Year!" Actually, I'm drinking a delicious mug of hot chocolate, but that shouldn't be a problem, as the wish is sincere.

In a couple of days I'll tell you about my friend (and business partner) Carrie's new book . . . she's running a bit behind schedule, but will soon have it published.

Have a safe fun New Years Eve and do drive carefully if you'll be out and about!

The American Poultry Association, The Authority on Breed Standards . . .

Every backyard or rural chicken keeper can benefit by learning about the breeds of chickens and other poultry. Every industry needs to set and maintain standards and anyone who raises chickens could be considered a participant in the chicken industry.

At least as a responsible consumer.

If you live elsewhere in the world, there is a standard for you to learn from, too:

The American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection, British, Australian chicken breed Standards

It is my understanding that quite a few shows in Europe go by the British Standard in their poultry exhibits. Australia has their own, and I'm not aware of any other countries that have a standards book. Victoria Roberts is the editor of the British Standard. She's very knowledgeable. I have a CD of hers and a book she wrote that I really enjoy, too.

The American Standard lists breed according to Class, then variety. The British standard classifies breeds according to feather type.

The American Poultry Association was formed in 1873 with the goal:

"to stabilize our economic and commercial breeds to uniform size, shape and color, with good production and practicality; with provision that ornamental breeds, including the Bantam, be attractive, productive and meet requirements of the Standard breeder."

~American Standard of Perfection, 1993 edition

New editions of the American Standard are published periodically as new breeds are admitted. Whether or not you've ever exhibited your poultry - or ever plan to do so - having a copy of the Standard is a huge advantage.

In it, you learn the following requirements for each breed, male and female:

Proper comb type

Number of toes

Beak type and color

Earlobe color

Leg color

Eye color

Beards, muffs or tufts, if applicable

. . .and much, much more

Including, Disqualifications and Defects.

If you're only interested in having fresh eggs, rather than learning all that the Standard contains, but would like to get more enjoyment from attending a chicken show, you might like the "chicken Show appreciation chapter I included in The Art of Taming a Chicken . . . How to Tame Your Backyard Flock.

It's in paperback on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.

Yes, sweet precocious little "Timmy" - nicknamed 'the little rascal'. Four nights ago when I went out to put the chickens in the coop, he was nowhere to be found. The next morning my heart broke when I saw him. He was soaked, and so cold - not at all good for a Silkie! I picked him up and brought him inside, blotted him with towels, I set him in a box with dry towels while getting one of my carriers and padding it with straw. He stayed in for four days. First day, showed signs of life, but wouldn't eat.

The next day he ate a little, and the third day, he ate pretty well, but still slept a lot and didn't look at all spiffy. He's back outside now, though, and is active and back to normal. Thank God! I sure didn't want to lose him, But when I brought him in I really didn't have much hope for him.

It was kind of strange how I got the little guy; an unusual call from a man my dad used to work with asking if I'd like a pair of Silkies. Of course I didn't hesitate. There's always room for one more (or two). Well, there are those pesky space requirements, but I have a pretty big place.

He and his mate fit right in with the layers - they teamed up every evening to guide any stragglers into the coop. He and "Lula" are back together now doing their thing.

Thought you might like to hear about what I certainly regard as a little miracle, seeing as it is almost Christmas.

May you have many miracles, too, both big and small!

It's never too early to start planning! Christmas will come and go quickly, then in just 90 days or so we'll see the exciting signs of Spring.

This baby chicks question arose last night while I was at work. We got a couple of new employees there, and strangely enough the conversation during break gravitated toward chickens.

Truth be told, and as you probably suspected, there was a lull in the conversation and I brought up the topic, so it wasn't really such a strange phenomenon. 😉

Well, I'm happy to report that I now have this great chicken hobby in common with a fellow worker - who recently made the decision to get started by ordering ten baby chicks from one of the hatcheries.

She asked me to make a list of everything she'd need to do in order to be all prepared, so I did, and will share it with you, too.

Have a coop ready or within days of completion before you order baby chicks. Time goes fast!

Buy or build your own brooder. If you already have a brooder, make sure it's sanitized, all the parts are in working order, and test it out, including the heat settings, within enough time to purchase another one if it's not working. Set it up 24 hours before the first day of delivery stated on your invoice for the chicks. Often it will be "either" "or" within a 2-day window..

If you're buying baby chicks from a local feed store, know what you want ahead of time and what the babies of that breed look like. The hatchery websites usually have a picture of both the babies and grown chickens of the breeds they sell and are a reliable source of correct identification of breeds. Often, the feed stores will nearly sell out one breed and put the remaining baby chicks in with a tub filled with another breed. This is a good idea in order to keep them warm, but if you have your heart set on seeing the breed you've chosen when they grow up, you may be disappointed. I learned the breeds by ordering brochures from all the hatcheries I could find, then studying them for hours on end when I was fourteen. It was free, and, of course we have the Internet today.

Get your feed (non-medicated if you've chosen to have the babies vaccinated for Coccidiosis by the hatchery) and water containers, buy chick feed a few days ahead of time and make sure you have chick grit, any electrolytes you've chosen, pine bedding, paper towels, hydrogen peroxide and other common first aid supplies in case there are any injuries(rare).

Read extensively about caring for the babies days or weeks before you get them. It's not rocket science, but you'll need to show them where the water container is (dip their beaks in it) watch for common issues like "pasty butt", splayed legs, beak issues, signs of illness, pecking, and such.

Different people who write about chickens sometimes have different ideas about what to feed baby chicks. Some boil eggs, peel them and mash them for the babies for the first couple of days. Since the embryos were nourished in this way before hatching, this is a solid plan. Others stick with a high quality commercial chick feed that has been researched and developed to provide all necessary nutrients. Some use corn meal, mash, or ground oats mixed with a little water. Everyone has their favorite, but I've never seen any recommendation that would have the potential to harm the babies.

Baby chicks seem less stressed when you have some soft calming music playing, so you might consider that.

Follow all sanitation procedures, keep consistent feeding schedules . . . and enjoy your chickens first six weeks!

In Gratitude to Chickens - for Centuries of Service to Humans

The purpose of this book is to debunk the common stereotypes about chickens that the "uninitiated" just seem to accept as truth!

After seven months researching and writing, I'm comfortable predicting that most people who read it will come away with the realization that we each owe a debt of gratitude to chickens.

Their contributions to our improved health and longevity alone certainly warrant that, don't you think? And this began way back in the days of Aristotle.

A preview reader said this book was "Fun and Addictive". He's not a fan of chickens, but is still planning to give the book as a gift and a Christmas party hostess gift! Fancy that!

I chose the highest quality white paper with images in full color for the print version; I figured chickens deserve no less, though not every image in the book is of chickens. Naturally, this meant an increase in production costs.

Just watched this last night . . . Really enjoyed it. I had pre-ordered it. According to the Amazon listing the CD will be available on December 6th. It's under $10.

This documentary film by CMT teaches a lot about chicken exhibition, demonstrates many qualities about chickens that cause us to become addicted to them, and showcases several people, the breeds they love and some of their trials and tribulations with life in general and with their chickens.

It's filmed primarily at the Ohio State Fair, where one of the largest chicken shows is held every year in the United States.

If you're a "chicken person", you'll love this, I'm sure! If not, you'll learn some of the answers to the question that may be on your mind like - "why on earth would anyone want to raise chickens?" 😊

Human Ages

The question was "Where did you get it?", speaking of the chart I blogged about a few years ago that compared chicken age to human age. I ran across a little booklet the other day that I'd bought through the mail years ago. turns out, it has that chart information in it! Now I know, that's where I got it!

The author, a well respected consultant to breeders has passed away. His book was self-published, before computers, and I'm not sure whether he had family that re-published any of his material or not.

For new readers who may be interested I've added an image reflecting the info in it. Please respect the copyright on the image (don't copy it!), but the information in it is available to anyone who looks at it. I have a 'helper' now. She does publishing, creates images for me and does other online work, too.

Not that all chickens necessarily die at age seven, but the chart has to stop somewhere, I guess. I just lost a Yokohama hen who had almost reached the age of 16. I once had three Yokohama hens - the one that lived so long is pictured on the top right. She was very tame and sweet.<strike></strike>

Back to work on those projects - soon as they're published will link to them, then you'll see how hard I've been working for the past year. 😊

Just wanted to say "Hi" after a long absence. A life changing accident occurred a couple of years ago that 'threw me for a loop", but I'm back now, healthy, and happy to be here! That traumatic incident is securely locked up in the Do Not Disturb vault for eternity.

Life goes on, and it's true - time heals all wounds. I hope your life has been going smoothly!

There is some more news I should pass on. For the past year, I've been working on a couple of projects I'd love to share with you in just a couple of days. You might say they're 'in the oven', not quite done yet. Therefore no links to share yet. Yep, they relate to our precious feathered friends!

Haven't lost my passion for chicken keeping!

Just checked my email, recently resurrected, and someone asked about the Comparison Chart for Chicken VS. Human Ages.

Will publish this post and address that question in another - coming right up!
Hope the new year is coming along great for you! Or, too soon to guess? . . . yeah, me, too, but "Think Positive's" the best response, right? I've got eggs, potatoes, my animals are doing good, my family is relatively healthy - always plenty to be thankful for.

I found another book . . . who could've guessed that would happen? Hope you love to read, too!

It's by David Boyett (he's a pet chicken enthusiast, too!). He wrote it to honor his late father; I thought that was a great gesture. He said it took about two years to complete, a significant investment in time.

It's themed around the stories his dad told about the old timer's in the area (love old timers stories!). Now, keep in mind, I haven't finished the book, in fact I've only read the available sample. I'm really looking forward to actually reading it all, still not finished with the books I got for Christmas, though. Will get it and read it, but wanted to let you know about it right away so you could check it out, too - I loved the part I read about the baby chick named "Chick" (he sleeps in a shoe), his family and a bullying incident. I'm sure I'll be sharing more about it later! It's for adults, but kids would probably enjoy it, too. I'm sure it's going to be very funny, too.

You can get it on Amazon, at:

http://www.amazon.com/Chick-Homestead-Chickens-Grymme-Hollow/dp/1491827386

Tried to copy the cover, but failed - great graphics, Mr, Boyett created them himself!

Just goes to show - tons of Pet Chicken Enthusiasts, and each is really smart and talented. Little do they know (they know who they are) when they call us, er, me, anyway - "bird brain"! One of the books I got for Christmas has a lot of research on the brains of birds, and they are very impressive - just say'n.(-:

Anyway, I haven't even tried very hard and have still unearthed several entrepreneurial spirits who've created products around this great hobby. Congratulations to each and every one!

Oh, by the way, Mr. boyett has a video, too-on the chicken dance-very lively and fun to watch his chickens-I shared it from You Tube to Google Plus, or at least went through the motions. The channel is in the author's name, pretty sure. He's on Facebook, as well, I'm going to look him up and 'friend' him - and check out his Page - It's DVB Nonprofit Chicken Ranch - might see you there, look'n forward to it.

From Pet Chicken Acres - Merry Christmas!

Wanted to share this picture with you in case you didn't know about this website I found awhile back. It's called lunapic.com. If you find some time to play, you'll enjoy all the cool effects that can be applied to your photos - pretty easy, too.

A friend just loaned me a book I think you might enjoy, too, plan to read it during a few days off after Christmas. The title is About Dreams and Memories On the Old Farm, by Irv E. Francis. It's all about the author and his family's life on a farm in West Virginia. I think I'm going to learn a ton from it. Nothing like learning from people who've been around for many, many years.

I highly recommend seeking out the great Grandma's and Grandpa's at your Christmas gathering. Listen to their stories; such a different world from today's! But then, guess you might need to share my love of history to enjoy those stories. Either way, have a great holiday!

Cyber Monday Deals for Pet Chicken Enthusiasts, Too

See Below for details!

Cyber Monday Deals, closely following Black Friday (and even early bird Thanksgiving shopping opportunities) are made to order for those of us who love our pet chickens and are looking for related items.

The Wall Street Journal published an article, entitled 'Fowl Fans See Golden Eggs in Catering to Pet-Chicken Market', written by Sarah E. Needleman, in their online edition on July 8, 2010. You can read it here. It featured entrepreneurial ventures from chicken diapers to baby chicks. Since then, there have no doubt been many more adventuresome entrepreneurs catering to pet chicken enthusiasts.

This is a market, that, according to a recent study conducted by Eastern Washington University Communications Department student, Desalyn Graybeal, reveals that our pet chicken hobby does, indeed, make up a diverse 'sub-culture' of today's society. See the post immediately below this for details. The study has been completed . . . thank you to those of you who participated after having read about it here.

So, who are some of the other enterprising people who've started fulfilling needs for this "Pet-Chicken Market" since that article was published? Well . . .

One Entrepreneur has solved the Problem of How to Mobilize a Chicken Coop . . . and Turn it Into a Chicken Tractor

His name is Harry, and he says his product is the result of a need his wife identified. "My wife decided to start raising chickens for the fun of it and so that we could at least partially control our food supply", he related.

He said that "As a romantic, she wanted to free-range the chickens, but was determined to keep them protected from predators all the while."

She had researched the issue before beginning to build a coop she fully intended would provide the best possible protection from dogs, coyotes, and other common predators of chickens. Then, he said, "she asked me for suggestions on how to stiffen it up; after awhile, I figured out how she could add wheels so it could be moved around."

It turned out to be just what she was hoping for! In an interview last week, Harry stated that "My wife showed me videos of coops that had wheels, but there were none available in the form of a kit that could be attached to an existing chicken coop so that it could be mobilized." Harry said he got ideas from existing chicken tractors that others had used successfully, and that "I think I managed to come up with a pretty good kit."

Quite possibly a modest understatement! Harry has been successfully manufacturing and marketing his Chicken Coop Wheels since early this year. You can learn all about them at http://www.chickencoopwheels.com. Harry provides convenient delivery to happy customers throughout the United States.

###

This looks like a really solid kit, so check it out if you already have a chicken coop, but would like to be able to easily move it around your property.

Are you a member of the Pet Chicken Entrepreneurs Club? Okay, there's not really a 'club' yet - that I know of. Wouldn't it be interesting to learn about all the products created just for the participants of our growing 'sub-culture', though? If you're one of those like Harry who've set out to solve a problem around this hobby, you're special. Drop me an email at scott@fortheloveofchickens.com , I'd love to include your product here.

Oh, and please remember to check out the "Everything Chicken Store" over at my website. It'll save you a lot of time finding chicken decor, country gifts, chicken supplies, and more - because I've already gone to the effort to find them - often having to chase them down in multiple categories. Stay home and relax; you'll find more here than at any mall, if chicken-related items are on your list!

Pet Chicken Study Being Conducted - Your Invitation to Participate

Do you love your pet chicken(s)? If your first thought when you read that was "Of course I do" this is for YOU! Below is your official invitation to participate in an important study! It's about pet chickens and our manner of communicating, understanding and interacting with them.

It takes just a few minutes to fill out and is administered by a student at Eastern Washington University, located in Cheney, Washington (the State). See all the details and contact information below.

Hope you'll consider participating. Sound interesting? Okay, read all about it below:

And, at 244 pages of solid content covering nearly everything anyone would be likely to wonder about chickens-integrated-with-gardens, it's not one of those 'quick reads', anyway. That's good because whether you already own virtually every book written about poultry, or are just now thinking about getting your very first chickens this book alone will provide both the necessary basics and most likely, at least a few new gems that will enrich the knowledge you've already accumulated, even if you're already experienced at both landscaping and chicken care.

For total beginners, this book fills the bill if you only own one book about raising chickens - and you do need at least one, you know (-: ! In addition, its concentration on integrating your chickens into your landscape for their enjoyment and good health, the curb appeal of your property, and the addition of fresh veggies and other edibles to go with those cherished eggs (and for chicken edibles) is priceless.

You'll find information about every ingredient to landscaping products, fencing, construction materials, and its all concentrated upon providing a good home for your chickens while, at the same time developing your land into a place of beauty and bounty. There's a section reminding you of the plants to avoid that will be poisonous to your chickens to ingest, a detailed discussion on creating a "layered garden", and even designing innovative housing for your chickens that fits into your overall landscaping plan.

There's no lack of important information on caring for your chickens, selecting a breed, or protecting your precious pets from predators, either. Like all the "Dummies" books you'll find the familiar icons that provide helpful tips, vital bits of information, warnings, and additional information you may be interested in. It's well organized and easy to understand for both young people and adults. and, there are great photos, landscaping models, and illustrations included that will add to your reading enjoyment.

As the authors point out, the trend toward raising chickens is in full swing, so if you're just considering joining this sustainable movement that includes chickens in your backyard you won't be a slow adopter. Like most books nowadays you can get this one in ebook form, too. In the U.S. the hard copy retails for just under $20 - so treat yourself or get it as a gift that will be sure to be appreciated! That magical gift giving season will be here before we know it.

Note: I was informed that one lucky reader would be able to win a free copy of this book, too! Watch for a new post where I'll give you all the details! Study up on your chicken facts, too - so you'll have a good chance to become that one lucky contestant!

Not quite sure how or where to get started? There are both health and appearance requirements.

In the United States, anyway, there are NPIP standards. It stands for the National Poultry Improvement Plan. If you ordered your chickens from a hatchery, they will usually identify themselves as a NPIP approved hatchery - it means the baby chicks you order from them have been vaccinated for Pullorum, Typhoid, and other diseases.

If you bought your chicks as babies from a feed store, they will most likely have gotten those babies from one of these hatcheries . . . and will tell you which one. Each fair can have different requirements, but for the most part they do require these vaccinations. To learn all the requirements of your local fair, you'll need to read and understand the information contained in the Premium Book that will be available from your local fairgrounds. Sometimes, you'll find them at the counter of your local feed store.

Don't fill it out and submit it along with a check or money order for the entry fee (usually, $2 - $3 per bird), though, until you've looked up the breed of your chickens in the The American Standard of Perfection, which you can usually find on Amazon.com. It is your 'bible' for deciding whether your beautiful chickens have a chance of winning a trophy or ribbon. You'll learn what your chicken must look like in order to compete for its breed, age, and gender. This includes things like body shape, stance, color of every body part, feather design, and much more. If there's a "Barnyard Chickens Category", you can probably disregard this step, but there will no doubt be some standards to meet in that category, as well.

How to Get A Copy of the Premium Book

Online, Google the name of your fair. Any more, each one normally has a website with a search button. Look for the Poultry Superintendent or Poultry Department-there may be a phone number or email for you to use in case you have any questions after you've read the premium book. Don't expect a response immediately, as this superintendent may be a volunteer with a full-time job elsewhere. Note: if your kids are showing their chickens as members of their 4-H Club, they will be given all the information they need from their leaders. As an adult hobbyist, you'll be showing "Open Class" - if both you and your kids will have entries, be sure to understand the details about each. Many times there'll be a pdf of the Premium Book on the website that you can print out. Read it carefully, as it provides all the rules and regulations, as well as times you need to bring your show birds in for 'Vet Check', whether you need to come each day to feed your chickens or whether volunteers are in place, whether you can or should bring your own feed, when judging will occur, and the date and time you must remove your chickens.

Common Errors That Will Get Your Chicken Disqualified

The judge may disqualify your birds if you haven't entered the complete and proper name of the breed and other required information in the registration process. Watch out, though - try to visit before judging is to take place. Once in awhile, the cage tags get mixed up, as they are sometimes placed on the cages by busy fair volunteers. Clear up any such mix-ups before judging takes place.

Not passing vet check (a Veterinarian will be present on the first day during registration) will mean you'll need to take your chicken back home right away. Examine each chicken yourself on the day before the fair (the day of the fair, you'll be too busy packing up to get there by 8 or 9 a.m.). Listen to it breathe, inspect it's eyes, check for any parasites, monitor appetite, droppings, and activity level - if everything is normal, you'll probably be safe.

Other disqualifications mean your chickens will remain at the fair, but won't be judged. Know your chicken's breed, and don't show a chicken that clearly doesn't measure up according to the Standard. You must know whether it's a bantam or full sized chicken, spell the breed names correctly, get the gender right, and understand the difference in name between a young bird and the adult hen or rooster. It should not have any glaring disqualifications, such as a completely wrong color of leg, for example. You must not have engaged in any "fakery" in preparing the bird for show - such as glueing a missing feather in place in order to qualify.

What are the Advantages to Showing Your Chickens at the Fair?

Getting your chickens trained, tamed, and groomed can be a fun family activity, assuming everyone involved enjoys raising chickens.

Hanging out with other chicken hobbyists can be fun and informative

As an exhibitor, you'll most likely get free admittance to the fair, any time you wish to visit

If your birds win, you'll get a "premium check" - not much, but it buys a little feed. It's based upon whether you get a trophy, a best of class, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place ribbon

Winners will be awarded ribbons or trophies. Not so many trophies in the recent past, unfortunately, but ribbons are still dispensed

If you volunteer during the day, you'll enjoy meeting fair visitors and answering their questions about chickens

It's a great educational opportunity for you

You'll benefit year around from having tamed chickens - advisable for fitting and showing, but an added pleasure when interacting daily with your flock

What if You Want To Learn More?

Coincidentally, I've got you covered. Benefit from my 30 plus years experience raising chickens which translates into showing at fairs every year other than the four I was serving in the military. I could show you all my ribbons and trophies, but I'm pretty humble; plus, it would require unpacking them.

If you'd like to understand how to tame and train your chickens for fitting and showing I'm confident the books below will help you (if they don't, please take advantage of the generous return policy, which I heartily endorse). They're priced low enough for anyone to afford - my goal is to grow this hobby:

This showing book adds to the information in this post. It does not detail the rules and regulations of every area in the U.S.! The time required to do that - and to update continuously- would make it very expensive. Like the taming book, it, too is priced at $2.99. You can find out about the rules and regulations for your local fair just by performing an online search and spending a few short minutes. The photo is of me at the fair my first year in 4-H. I was showing my white silky hen. The tall guy was the judge.

Below, are the graphics they currently have for pet birds:

In addition to the graphic, you pick your preferred lettering, and content - then order online, they send the stone to you.

Just a few of the stones from their website, above. Seems like a really nice family business - they deliver all over the U.S. and prices appear reasonable. This isn't the sort of thing you hope people will need, but since we typically have quite a number of pets in a lifetime, losses are sad, but realistic.

It's nice to have something visible to reflect on memories and remind us of the good times our special feathered or furry friends brought into our lives, right?

Note: I don't have any affiliate relationship with this business, just received an introductory message from them, thought it was a cool service, and wanted to share with my fellow pet chicken enthusiasts.
