हमारा पर्यावरण कैसा है? क्या हमने कभी इस बारे में गौर किया? क्या हम उसे अच्छा बनाने के लिए अपनी तरफ से कुछ करते हैं? ५ जून को पर्यावरण दिवस पर बड़ी बातें भले ही मत सोचो पर अपने मुहल्ले, अपने आसपास और अपने घर के पर्यावरण के बारे में विचार करना चाहिए। पर्यावरण के बारे में सोचते हुए इतने तक ही मत सोचना कि पेड़, पानी और मिट्टी ठीक रहे तो पर्यावरण ठीक हो जाएगा।

आप भी पर्यावरण का ही हिस्सा हैं। इसलिए आपका व्यवहार लगातार अच्छा बने इसके लिए भी कोशिश करते रहना। तभी पूरा पर्यावरण बेहतर बनेगा। इस बार अपने पर्यावरण को बेहतर बनाने के लिए कोई छोटा काम जरूर करना। पिछले पर्यावरण दिवस पर जैसा कि हमने कहा था कि कोशिश करो अपने आसपास एक पौधा लगाने की। जिन्होंने पिछली बार बात मानी होगी और अपने पौधे का खयाल भी रखा होगा उनका पौधा इस पर्यावरण दिवस पर दूसरे साल में जाएगा। जिन्होंने पिछली बार पौधा नहीं लगाया वे इस बार पौधा लगा सकते हैं

7 Steps Kids Can Take

Since most paper comes from trees, using less paper can help save the rainforests. Use recycled 100% post-consumer waste (PCW) paper whenever possible. Better yet, use tree-free paper. Tree-free paper uses no trees--it is made from plants like kenaf, or from farmers' leftovers like corn stalks and wheat straw. If paper is 100% PCW or tree-free, it will say so on the package. If it doesn't say "recycled" or "tree-free" that means it most likely isn't. You can ask your stationery store to carry tree-free paper, or call Vision Paper at (505) 294-0293 to find out where to get tree-free paper in your area. Remember to save paper by writing on both sides of the sheet, and by using half-sheets and scratch paper whenever you can. And remember to always recycle.

Another way to use less paper is to use a lunch pail or canvas sack for your school lunches, and take a canvas bag to the grocery store instead of using a paper or plastic bag. Use cloth napkins at home and at school instead of paper napkins, and use cloth towels to dry your hands or wipe up spills instead of paper towels. If you must use paper napkins or towels, use only one at a time instead of grabbing a handful.

Gasoline and plastic are two things that are made from petroleum, or oil. A lot of oil comes from the rainforests through a process called extraction. Since oil extraction is very harmful to the rainforests, using less oil products can help save the rainforests. Instead of using gasoline to drive somewhere in a car, ride your bike, walk, carpool, or take the bus whenever possible. Also make sure your family's car tires are inflated properly since low air in tires uses more gas than is necessary.

Reduce the amount of plastic you use by choosing glass bottles and containers whenever possible and by re-using the plastic containers and bottles that you already have. If you have a plastic water bottle, do not throw it out and buy a new one. Instead, rinse it thoroughly and refill it again and again.

One big reason rainforests are being destroyed is for beef. Millions of acres of rainforest are slashed and burned, which means that the land is set on fire in order to clear it. The cleared land is then turned into grass pastures for cows. These cows get butchered and are often sent to the United States to be put into fast-food hamburgers, frozen meat products, and canned pet food. For every quarter-pound fast-food hamburger that comes from the rainforest, 55 square feet of rainforest is destroyed. That is the size of a small kitchen! And that's just for one hamburger!

When ordering food at restaurants, find items on the menu that do not contain beef. Ask your parents to help you create a list of healthy foods that you can eat at home that do not contain beef. When choosing pet food for your dog or cat, choose a flavor that isn't beef. By reducing the amount of beef you choose to eat, you are doing a lot to help save the rainforests!

Raising money to help protect rainforest land is easy and important. You can join together with kids from your classroom or neighborhood to hold a popcorn or lemonade sale, a car wash, a rainforest play, a rummage sale, or to collect aluminum cans to recycle for cash. Another way to raise money for the rainforests is to just ask 5 or 10 people you know if they will give one dollar for the rainforests. If ten of you each ask five people for one dollar, you've just raised 50 dollars! Write to Rainforest Action Network for other ideas on how to fundraise for the rainforest.

The money you collect can go to Rainforest Action Network's Protect-An-Acre program. This is a program that gives money to the native people that live in the rainforest so they can protect the land they live on. Since they've lived in the rainforest for thousands of years, they care very much about their rainforest home, and want to protect it from destruction.

Writing letters to the presidents of companies, or corporations, that destroy the rainforest is a very powerful thing to do. Unfortunately, there are many corporations that destroy the rainforest by logging the trees, drilling for oil, or using rainforest beef in their products. Our earth is covered by the thick green foliage of Rainforests which accounts nearly 6 percent of the total area onour earth. These rainforests are treasures of natural resources which are often mystical in nature. They support half of the world’s flora and fauna. It is also the residence of many tribes, who are the sole holder of these forests. TheRainforests stretch from Central America to South America’s Amazon to Africa’s central part along the equator toSouth Asia including India, Burma and Indonesian Archipelago to Australia and New Zealand. The Rainforests are the habitat of some 10 million breeds of plants, animals and insects including endangered species and the source of nearly 70 percent of the medicinal plants which exist in our earth. The Rainforests are full of fruit producing treeslike coconuts, bananas, mangoes and many more. The benefits of this Rainforest are endless but still every second one and half acres of forests is lost due to endless chopping and cutting of trees.

We must understand the importance of Rainforests and the urgency to save them. The rainforests acts as the lungs of our planet. It takes in the carbon dioxide from the earth’s atmosphere and releases Oxygen back. This phenomenon helps in maintaining a balanced atmosphere. Rainforests produce 20 percent of Oxygen in our planet which sustains our life. Secondly, rainforest receives 1750-2000 millimetre of rain annually thus maintaining a favourable temperature in our planet. Without these rain forests our planet will have only extreme weather conditions, either extreme hot or unbearable cold climate. Rainforest therefore helps in maintaining a favourable temperature in our planet.

Scientists have prophesied that Rainforests will be completely diminished within 40 years. This will have a catastrophic effect on the survival of living beings. In 2003, France saw 15000 deaths due to severe heat strokes. 1400 people died in Netherlands. 13000 deaths in Portugal, 900 deaths in UK and 20000 deaths in Italy. Unbelievable indeed! Europe is close to Northern Arctic belt and deaths due to heat strokes is increasing day by day. Due to lack of rain severe droughts have become a regular occurrence.

The benefits of the rainforests are endless but still millions of acres of forests are being cleared only because of wood which is used for fuel and for furniture. The value of these rainforest is perceived as the value of timber by logging companies and short-sighted governments who are thinking in terms of quick profits and immediate gains only. Every second an area of a football field size is cleared by the logging companies and multinational corporations. Big multinationals and reputed global firms like Mitsubishi Corporation, Georgia Pacific, and Texaco are also involved in these deforestation activities.

It is high time that we must understand the value of the rainforests and try to protect them from further destruction. We must educate people about the damaging consequences of rainforest destruction and strategise on how toprotect these forests. We have to start this from grass root level. Rainforest areas must be declared as a protected zone and any violation of its rules must have serious penalties. The steps may be difficult but we must remember that every minute about 2000 trees are felled and if this rate continues then soon we will see rainforests in only books and magazines and will cry that we lost a beautiful treasure on this planet. Of course if we survive to see them in books! Lets do our part to save the rainforests because the human existence depends on it

Climate change is in the news. It seems like everyone's "going green." We're glad you want to take action, too. Luckily, many of the steps we can take to stop climate change can make our lives better. Our grandchildren-and their children-will thank us for living more sustainably. Let's start now....

Keep reading for 10 simple things you can do today to help reduce your environmental impact, save money, and live a happier, healthier life.

1.Save energy to save money

Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
Unplug appliances when you're not using them. Or, use a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts "phantom" or "vampire" energy use.
Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying

2.Save water to save money.

Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too.
Install a low-flow showerhead. They don't cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment.
Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet. These inexpensive appliances conserve heat and water, while keeping water pressure high.
Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your garden. Many plants need minimal watering. Find out which occur naturally in your area

3.Less gas = more money (and better health!).

Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity.
Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work. Or move closer. Even if this means paying more rent, it could save you money in the long term.
Lobby your local government to increase spending on sidewalks and bike lanes. With little cost, these improvements can pay huge dividends in bettering your health and reducing traffic.

4.Eat smart.

If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy.

5.Skip the bottled water

Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you'll be happy when you don't have to replace items as frequently (and this means less waste!).

9.Keep electronics out of the trash.

Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
Recycle your cell phone.
Ask your local government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.
