Go Pro has taken over the world! With it's new line up of the Hero 7 series, the camera company hopes that adoption of action cameras would increase manifold. There's something for everyone this time around.

Go Pro has released 3 versions : Hero 7 Black, Hero 7 Silver, Hero 7 White.

Each of these versions offer a different experience and different functionality.

Surface Go: Where is Microsoft going with this and does India need one?

For some time now we have been witnessing a paradigm shift in the way we (consumers) use laptops. The hybrid laptop/tablet culture has kicked in and tech giants like Microsoft, Google and Apple have leapt forward to get a hold of the big fish. Hardware companies like HP, Dell and Asus have come up with tantalizing form factors for the hybrids. The market for laptops/tablets is going through a tumultuous wave, one which will change the industry forever and for the good. Who is the winner over here? Is has to be the consumer.

What is the Surface Go?

A 10 inch hybrid tablet/laptop priced at $399 (~Rs.30,000) running Windows 10 S mode (that means it will run apps only from the Microsoft Store). The chipset is Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y chip. The new keyboard is adjusted to Surface's form factor and as per reviews it works like a charm. Microsoft is offering 4GB/8GB RAM and 64GB eMMC and 128GB SSD. Note that SSD is faster than eMMC (post coming out soon on the difference). It also comes with the iconic kickstand that has made the Surface what it is today.

What can it do?

Gaming – This tablet/laptop is not really meant for gaming. You can try your luck with games from Microsoft Store but then you’ll be disappointed.

Internet Surfing – Will work like a charm given the amazing form factor and portability.

Watching videos – Form factor is just perfect for watching YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime. Coupled with a decent battery life, the Surface Go is inherently designed for this task.

Photo/Video editing – Video editing is questionable, but basic photo editing on something like Adobe LightRoom works fairly well.

Will it kill the iPad?

It may just do that! But, the ecosystem is not that strong. The apps on the Microsoft Store are few and there is a need to on-board developers to create and sustain an ecosystem similar to that of Android or iOS.

Where is Microsoft going with it?

Since the industry has already shifted towards hybrids, it won’t be wrong to say that Microsoft trying it’s luck here. With the Surface line up being impressive in terms of form factor and utility, the Surface Go has a chance here. As per reviews by The Verge and other technology pros, the Surface Go is an overachiever if you set your expectations right at the price point offered.

Overall, the Surface line up has started giving gains to Microsoft as per the latest quarterly report.

It won't be wrong to say that Microsoft will stay in the hardware arena for now. Success for the company lies in creating a stable ecosystem (reiterated).

Does India need one?

The trend of hybrids in India has been slow, but steady. Hardware companies like Dell, HP and Asus have tried their luck in the Indian tech market with fair bit of success. But, what bothers Indian consumers more than anything else is the price point. Agreed that players like Micromax, iBall and Acer have come up with cheaper variants, but the trust factor is lacking and the quality of the chipset and body is questionable.

Given the quality with which Microsoft ships it’s Surface Line up, there is no doubt that the Indian consumer would take to the Surface Go, if the price point is good enough to attract that millennial population. The success for Microsoft lies in creating a proposition and an ecosystem that instantly makes the consumers in India cling on and when that happens in a country like India, you can be sure of succeeding in the market for long.

First Look: Google's Project Jacquard, Levi's smart jacket

Ever wondered how it would feel to wear a jacket that performs actions on your smartphone with gestures? Well, nobody thought it would be possible, but Google had other plans!

Google' Project Jacquard has taken off with the introduction of Levi's new smart jacket and is set to take the world by storm.

It’s targeted at people who commute by bike, and I think the only people beyond that target market are going to be a few techies and people who just really like jean jackets. Also, it works with both Android and iPhone.

When you talk to both Levi’s and Google, they’re very eager to tell a design story about this jacket, not just a technology story. It comes out of a partnership between the clothing company and a small division of Google dedicated to experimentation. We’ve seen lots of weird projects inside Google’s ATAP, but most of them (like the ill-fated Project Ara) have ended up getting scuttled.

The Levi's Trucker jacket is currently available in the United States for $350.

Smartwatches and smartphones are the buzzwords these days. There isn't a day when we don't get an update on what's going on in that tech front! Recently, Apple unvieled the watch series 3 and The Verge got a chance to have a good, deep look into it!

Highlights:

1) The Apple Watch Series 3 is the first to include LTE-compatibility. This means that you can now stream music and make phone calls without your phone in tow.

2) The new Apple Watch Series 3 costs $399 with cellular connectivity and $329 without it.

3) The Apple Watch Series 3, when connected to the iPhone, can offer up to three hours of talk time.

5) Orders start on September 15th. It'll be available on September 22nd. The Series 1 now starts at $249.

Use Canva for designing amazing headers

But, we live in the 21st century, wherein social media is more than just a marketing tool and developers from across the globe have developed online design websites to help out people with lack of design sense.

Though the internet is full of such online tools, in my perspective Canva really stands out of the crowd.

Once you create your account on Canva, login and go to the dashboard. As you can see in the pic above, the dashboard showcases a variety of options to choose from - Twitter header to Instagram post.

Choose the one you'd like to design.

In this case I've chosen Twitter header.

As you can see in the pic above, you can choose from a variety of Canva layouts for setting the context without worrying too much about the design and the placement of images.

If the layouts don't work for you, just choose a background image/colour from the background tab.

Once you've chosen the background, you can insert text or elements as you wish.

The elements tab offers a variety of items to choose from including illustrations, grids, icons, charts, shapes etc.

Once you are done with the designing bit, you can share or even download the template in various formats.

How to create and add Google sitemap to Blogger

A sitemap is essentially a list of pages which are a part of the website, accessible to web crawlers and even users. Sitemaps are important because they allow search engines like Google and Bing to discover pages on your website, which otherwise crawlers might have missed during regular crawling.

What is the problem with Blogger sitepmap files?

An complete sitemap file should mention all pages of a site but that’s not the case if your blog is hosted on Blogger.

The default XML sitemap file of any Blogger blog will have only the 26 most recent blog posts. That’s a limitation because some of your older blog pages, that are missing in the default XML sitemap file, may never get indexed in search engines. There’s however a simple solution to fix this problem.

How to generate a complete sitemap for your blogger blog?

This section is valid for both regular Blogger blogs (that use a .blogspot.com address) and also the self-hosted Blogger blogs that use a custom domain (like abc.com).

Here’s what you need to do to expose your blog’s complete site structure to search engines with the help of an XML sitemap.

1. Open the Sitemap Generator and type the full address of your blogspot blog (or your self-hosted Blogger blog).

2. Click the Generate Sitemap button and this tool will instantly generate the necessary text for your sitemap. Copy the entire generated text to your clipboard (see screenshot below).

Click on "Generate Sitemap"

3. Next go to your Blogger dashboard and under Settings – > Search Preferences, the enable Custom robots.txt option (available in the Crawling and Indexing section). Paste the clipboard text here and save your changes.

And we are done. Search engines will automatically discover your XML sitemap files via the robots.txt file and you don’t have to ping them manually.

Apple iPhone X: Top 5 features

On 12th September 2017, the world was struck by lightning! Yes, it was the new iPhone and this time finally Apple came up with something that could take away our breaths. The iPhone X was announced, to be released on 3rd November 2017 at $999 and $1,149.

The iPhone X packs in a lot of features. But, we'll pick up the top 5 and shed some light on them.

1) Edge-to-edge OLED Screen

The 5.8 inch edge-to-edge screen is the standout feature in the new iPhone X and speaks volumes about where the tech and smartphone industry is headed.

The new iphone X boasts of features like coloration and brightness-adjusting True Tone display technology. It provides a 2436 x 1125 resolution at 458 ppi across 5.8 inches of the screen. It’s also Apple’s first smartphone to come HDR-ready.

2) Front facing camera

Trick to remove password from PDF files using Google Chrome

Isn't it common these days to come across any PDF file which is password protected. Surely, with the increase in cyber crime, security of important files is necessary. But, it does become a hassle to enter that password everytime we open a password protected PDF file, remembering that password is bigger task altogether.

But, Google Chrome can help you do away with that password forever!

Here's how:-

1) Drag any password-protected PDF file into your Google Chrome browser.

2) Google Chrome will now prompt you to enter the password of the file. Enter the password and hit "Enter" to open the file.

3) Now press Ctrl+P on Windows or Cmd+P on Mac.Under Local destinations choose “Save as PDF” and click the "Save" button.

4) Google Chrome will now save the PDF to your desktop but without the password protection. If you re-open this PDF in Chrome, it would no longer require a password to open.

AR and VR: The future of computing platforms

Technology enthusiasts around the world have hailed AR/ VR to be the 4^th wave in consumer computing platforms. Previous waves which significantly disrupted the computing platforms were- personal computer, internet and mobile, respectively. Although, each of the previous waves madea huge impact, it is yet to be seen if the 4^th wave would make a dent in the tech world, as predicted.

Before diving deep into the analysis, let’s understand the basic difference between AR, VR and mixed reality. VR typically involves a headset and immerses the user in a virtual world. AR, on the other hand, overlays virtual objects as well as information in the real world for the user, the whole experience is augmented and is as discreet as possible. Whereas mixed reality is a subtle mixture of augmented as well as virtual reality. To understand better, VR requires a headset which is connected to a powerful PC, hence the movement is restricted, whereas with AR the user’s movement significantly free.

Shift in trend

The trend in the industry is slowly shifting when it comes to computing platforms. Since the late 20^th century to early 2000s, the world was dominated by personal computers, with majority of the profits going to Microsoft. But the game changed significantly in 2007, when Apple released the iPhone. The next generation DDR5 RAM will double the computing speeds,currently governed by the DDR4 RAM. This has been claimed by JEDEC, the organization in charge of computer memory standards.

According to JEDEC DDR5 will double the bandwidth and density over the current standard i.e. DDR4 RAM. But, here's the catch, the DDR5 standard will become official next year and would be available for manufacturers from 2020.

Microsoft urges users to uninstall Chrome due to battery drain issues

According to Microsoft, Google's Chrome browser is the reason behind laptop battery getting drained quickly. Post the Windows 10 update, Microsoft started using pop-up dialogue boxes to urge users to uninstall Chrome browser. Microsoft ran tests to compare battery life by running various browsers (including Chrome, Opera, Firefox) on the laptops and claimed that Microsoft Edge provided 36 percent more browsing time.
