For avid flickr users, the new flickr video app is an intereseting experience not only to be observed, but also to be indulged in! A recent avid "new app geek" myself, my desire to get the inside story pushed me to knock on the doors of Yahoo! France.(I am a Master Student reseacrhing on Visual Platforms flickr and YouTube and the uses of visual content hosted on these)

In an interesting conversation with Shamir Ramjan, Product Manager at Yahoo! flickr France,I discovered , that this permenant launch on 8.04.08 was a well deliberated decision. According to Ramjan the subtle inclusion of the flickr video is based on the "long photo" concept and therefore clearly stands apart from the YouTube style.

So what is actually a "long photo" and why are unhappy flickrites critical of this new app and why is it erroneously being linked to the YouTube video service?

As far as presentation and video duration, flickr video feature is not only different but unique as well. The intial 90 sec video play time* is a new limit, unheared of on other video platforms. flickr is not against 3hr long wedding clips, its just that with the 90 sec deal, this visual platform wants to bring out the creative genius in its users (only flickr pro account holders).

Brevity is elegance and so is discretion in presentation and in this respect flickr clips are merged into the photostream.The only distinguishing factor for these clips is the small play button on the far right corner. In this way the intial idea of the "long photo" does stand true as the visual stream displays these clips along side photos as photos that can be played and heared:a long photo.

This might be an overly simple explination from an amateur photographer as myself, but then the vast majority of flickrites are "photo amateurs" and for most of them flickr is a learning, sharing and viewing experience. Doing is believing, I tried out the long photo experience myself! Going through the flickr video FAQ's I grabbed my cell phone and set out to create a long photo. Recently I had photographed some kids playing football. It was an interesting game and I captured it in 25 shots of which I only posted an odd 9! Now with the long photo concept I could film the sport and display it as a photograph on my flickr page! It is a different experience.

flickr has already changed the sharing of photographs and now with its dynamic visual stream it users can experience a new way of not only making photographs but also viewing them. A mobile photograph ( interestingly shot with a mobile phone) and not just another video clip!

why can't flickr be both!

It is not so strange to see how the photographers are lashing it out on the new flickr video option on this now photo and video platform! From the flickr video to the anti flickr video to the anti- anti flickr video, it is amazing to see how this platform also introduces new ways of mediation!

The recent dougnut demand, on the flickr group "we demand dougnuts"is new way of gathering up people, having them sign up a petition.The question that lies here is how people are moblizing themselves on their own accord, for a common interest : those who want to keep flickr a strictly photo platform and others who welcome the change and see it as an opportunity for flickr users to go the next step!

The common conern over the flickr introduction of the video facility that has been voiced so far is: "we don't want it to turn out to be another YouTube service" This however is not a very reasonable concern.
First of all the 90 sec deal is amazing, flickr already has such a huge traffic that the 90 sec deal not only is elegance for brevity and precision, but also a good reason for keeping up with the high quality clip display!

Secondly, with small clips included in the photostream, flickr takes the visual platform theme to the next level. When clips and photos are visualised in the same stream, at that point this platform offers a complete visual stream: screaming to be viewed!
Personally i am on the doughnut group!! ;)

Ni pauvres, ni soumis

The "Ni Pauvres, Ni Soumis" demonstration was staged by the physically challenged French Citizens, held in Paris on the 29 March, 2008. More than 30.000 physically challenged citizens and their supporters took to the streets to express their disatisfaction regarding the unjust remuneration in the wake of ever increasing prices! The minimum monthly budget fixed by the French Government and attributed to these citizens is 628 euros even less than the SMIC, the French minimum wage limit which is around 1500 euros.

The solidarity and the unanimity of the supporters who poured out in thousands for this cause was indeed an overwhelming and endearing experience for me. As an amateur photographer and researcher on the photograph sharing site : flickr ( Part of my masters research deals with defining this photo sharing site as a both social and visual platform) I had a wonderful opportunity of following Hugo*, a self taught photographer who learnt all the rules of the photography world wholly and soully by using the flickr platform.

The expierence and the street smartness that I accquired while following Hugo* and other photojournalism reporters (Hugo*'s flickr contacts where these photographers share important links and info on the "photoreporters sur flickr") was an extraordinarily amazing and mindblowing expirence, for a complete amateur photographer as myself!

A brief recap of yesterday: we walked for 7 hours non stop between République, Richelieu and Barbès, following two demonstrations ( the second one was staged by Palestnians) It was my first time ever as research photographer covering professional photoreporters. Most of my frames subjects are both demonstartors and photoreporters and this in itself was an experience worth reliving again. I discovered a new spice to photography, it is not just about taking photos, it is so much more....and so much different from the involuntary clicks of our camphones and point and shooters.

La perspective est-elle vraiment important dans la prise de photo aujourd'hui?

Il fallait que je découvre pour moi-même comment le regard d'un photographe vis-à-vis le sujet qu'il photographie change. Certes l'acte photographique a évolué avec l'evolution de la technologie dans le domaine de la photographie, mais comment comprendre ce changement qui touche particulièrement la perspective. Le propos (déjà abordé dans un billet précédent) que veux déveloper à l'aide de mes propres expériences de photographie amateur est le suivant : le regard et la perspective pendant l'acte photographique (disons la prise d'une photo) subissent un changement imposé par l'appareil.

Les appareils en question: un réflex et une caméra-écran ou une caméra-phone.

Commeçons par le viseur d'un réflex:

Le regard qui est cadré quand il est obligé de passer à travers le visuer d'un réflex ne voit que l'objet à photographier, l'image est cadré dans la boîte noire de l'appareil. Ainsi, le cadrage dans ce cas est imposé par l'appareil. En conséquence, le regard se concentre sur l'objet et le fixe dans une perspective concentrée. On peut associer ce cadrage du regard au visonnage d'un film au cinéma. Comme au cinéma, l'écran s'illumine dans la salle noir, cette ambience d'une salle de cinéma aide d'avantage le regard des spectateurs à bien visonner les illuminations qui se déroulent dans un cadrage fixe de l'écran.

Les caméras-écrans proposent cependant, une autre manière de regarder l'objet à photographier. Comment regarde-t-on l'objet à photographier à travers un écran d'une caméra-phone qui est un écran mobile, un écran qui cadre l'objet mais pas le regard du photographe?

Le cadrage du viseur sert à cadrer le regard du photographe en l'obligéant de passer par la boîte noire, "la caméra obscura" mais l'écran d'un appareil photo comme la caméra-phone fait le contraire.

Photographier un objet avec un écran présente le regard avec plusieurs perspectives, dont l'objet à photographier se figure sur un écran, une perspective parmi plusieurs! Le regard se fixe sur la représentation de l'objet sur l'écran et l'objet en soi même devient flou!

Regarder différement, sur des média différents, sur des écrans mobiles que ce soit sur les sites webs ou les écrans du téléphone portable, la perspective est fracturée!

Video sharing buzz on flickr!

After 3 years of unprecedented photo sharing service, flickr has announced a coming soon launch of a new video sharing application (beta version, due in April) Since March 2005, after being acquired by Yahoo, this incredibly simple to use photo sharing site has drawn legion of users from all over the world. According to the Director of the French Laboratory of Contemporary Visual History (Lhivic) “flickr is one of the most important and interesting recent innovations in the field of photography” InternetActu.

A brief recap is necessary to understand what makes photo sharing on flickr so innovative and how does this site plan to compete with the already internationally popular video sharing platforms like Google’s YouTube?

flickr web services allows its users to upload, retouch, tag and publish photos through a flickr account under the Creative Commons licenses. Once published on the flickrite’s main page display, the photo can also be shared (published) in innumerable flickr photo pools, therefore allowing it to travel through a worldwide digital photo stream. A flickr photo widely published can be viewed by all who log on to the site, it can be commented on, added to favorites by other flickrites who can even (depending on the C.C license) add tags or even reuse a photo.

An even creative use of this site has led to phenomenal cases of Internet Celebrities. Amateur or professional, flickrites have set new photographical genres and most importantly learnt not only to copy these but also have fun sharing them. In view of such innovative photo sharing concept, flickr has successfully created a dynamic visual trend. Some web2.0 bloggers are skeptical about flickr’s video sharing. According to Dan Farber, flickr must intelligently and authentically launch its video sharing in an already YouTube wooed video sharing market. flickr’s product manager, Srivastava uses the key word “authenticity” to describe flickrites activity. Others can’t simply wait for the flickr video launch.

All that rests to be followed up is how innovative flickr video launch will be? According to Srivastava flickr photo community boosts of a proud 23 million plus contributor rate, but what novelty will flickr introduce in terms of video sharing? New video upload format, higher video definition, longer clip duration, easy video editing techniques, new visual graphics, and better sharing possibilities? Will flickr be accessible on camera cells?

Internet video sharing has gained enormous success in the web2.0 culture. Competing in an already saturated web video sharing scenario is indeed a daring feet for flickr. However, it also goes to prove that the web contributor /consumer market is extremely vast to saturate or even satisfy. The perpetual demand for innovative visual production and sharing techniques is a top priority of the digital natives. Personally, I think flickr has nothing to fear, with a strong, satisfied contributor rate, flickr will undoubtedly introduce creative video techniques!

Pakistani Student Protests Broadcasted on YouTube

Web2.0 culture encourages participative contribution from different web actors all over the world. It is interesting to note how the use of Visual communication platforms such as YouTube is used in other than entertainment purposes by the world youth.

With the imposition of the 42 days State of Emergency declared in Pakistan, on 3 November 2007, many private media channels were shut down. Obviously, this event did provoke demonstrations in Pakistan and abroad. Fortunately, with the proliferation of cell cameras and increased viewership of visual platforms such as YouTube, the Pakistani youth (home and abroad) filmed these demonstrations and broadcasted them worldwide on YouTube.

A folksonomique search on YouTube with tags such as: protests, students, Musharraf, emergency; display a number of video clips. It is interesting to note the obvious amateur visual recording signs of these clips: shaky recording, poor picture quality, abrupt framing, which authenticate the student amateur citizen endeavor to broadcast themselves. Although, some edited clips with professional popular Pakistani band music (Junoon) were also aired on YouTube, it was the amateur video made by LUMS students which were rebroadcasted by foreign media such as C.N.N.

In a developing country such as Pakistan where Internet accessibility and usage are highly debatable issues, it is however important to highlight that the importance and significance of Visual platforms are clear even in a not so Internet connected society!

After "Ten Things I hate about You and Myself" I said let's give a try to the Fluffyfriends application on the super well connected social photo, video sharing and daring site: Facebook. Bored by the usual snapping of some of the Facebook digital friends less more fiend attitude, I tried out this not so new, yet cute app, where i get to choose a Fluff.

What is a Fluff? Its a cute way of communicating with animal avatars with your connected friends. Instead of rude pokes and wierd vampire slayer fights you get cute cuddles from fellow fluffies and you can even name your flufftser and get it fed by others, a real Tamaguchi style cuddles!

It sure does work for me! Mine is a flying Giraffe and its named coucoumimi! It recently got fed by a FB friend and I am glad that I can also communicate with Fluffies instead of just pics and video sharing which recently led to a pretty sour experience especially with an important person on the Network!! yeh still under shock!!

So Fluffle your contacts and enjoy being Fluffled, it surely ain't gonna create a buzz, but hey you got have human cute stuffed toy side to network! Its funny though I would never imagine myself at the age of 27, gosh I am old, exchanging fluffles! I guess its age!

Caméra-écran: Perspective fracturée ?

Pratiquant la photographie avec un reflex depuis peu de temps, la principale question que je me pose maintenant (après avoir abandonné la photographie avec la caméra de mon téléphone portable) est celle-ci : Comment photographiais-je avec une caméra- écran et que voyais-je vraiment?

Pour comprendre et expliquer mon ancienne pratique, il m’a fallu observer d’autres toujours fidèles à la pratique de la caméra-écran. Heureusement, aujourd’hui la situation d’observation s’est présentée et quel autre endroit propice pour cette observation qu’un musée, où on trouve de milliers de spécimens, bref une mine d’or de photographes !

A Paris, le premier dimanche du chaque mois les portes de grands musées comme « Le Louvre » et « Musée d’Orsay » s’ouvrent et exhibent leurs trésors gratuitement au grand public. Ainsi, voit-on de milliers de gens, en foule, en queue à ces musées, de modernes pèlerins d’art tous munis de caméras (un appareil capable de capturer et reproduire une vue en photo)

Titillée par l’opportunité de visiter gratuitement ces grands lieux de Culture et d’Art, j’ai décidé de visiter « Le Louvre » ou plutôt « Le Temple de La Mona Lisa » à Paris. En me rappelant de l’intention principale de ma visite celle de ne pas contempler les grands œuvres, mais d’observer les pratiques photographiques d’écran des visiteurs, je suis passée devant mes œuvres favorites avec un gros cœur.

Voilà ce que j’ai observé : Des regards égarés de photographes de caméra- écran ! Bras en l’air, tête levée, cou étendu, front forcené, ils étaient tous en train de capturer une photo parmi une foule d’autres photographes ! Les écrans étaient partout devant les sculptures, les peintures. De plus, mon expérience devant « La Joconde » était plus instructive à ce propos !

En entrant dans la salle 6 de l’aille Denon, a première vue j’ai vu une foule avec des bras en l’air qui brandissaient des caméras-écrans. Sur ces écrans était visible la sacrée image de la dame au sourire mystérieux A partir de cette expérience deux questions de base peuvent être poser : Que voit-on pendant la pratique photographique d’écran ? Et surtout Comment voit-on ce qu’on photographie avec une caméra- écran ?

Les photographes d’écran voyaient les chefs d’œuvres sur l’écran de leur caméra. Donc, l’image ce qu’ils visionnaient subissait un cadrage automatique et était visible sur un écran plat, un écran mobile qui cadrait l’image et la séparait de l’ambiance parasitaire.

Ainsi, on peut dire que le rôle de l’écran est majeur car, on visionne l’œuvre à photographier à travers cet écran, on la capture sur et avec l’écran et dernière étape on visionne l’image finale, reproduite sur le même écran ; l’écran qui montre l’image prise dans un endroit publique, mais qui rend cette même image une possession privée! Une possession qui fait preuve de l’acte photographique. Alors, peut-on dire que pendant ce procédé on ne voit que l’écran ! Dans ce cas de figure, Oui!

Selon Panofsky la perspective est une forme symbolique - une façon de regarder le monde ! Pour moi regarder ce qu’on contemple à photographier à travers le viseur est de prendre conscience de la perspective.

Cependant, quand l’œil ne contemple plus l’image à travers le viseur mais la voit directement sur un écran plat, le regard est fracturé, bref la perspective est fracturée. Dans le dernier cas ce que l’œil voit ce sont des vues, pas une ! Plusieurs vues : l’objet à photographier dont l’image se figure sur l’écran, l’écran qui est mobile et n’offre qu’une vue secondaire, un cadrage privé dans un flou de l’ambiance parasitaire !

Mon expérience en photographiant ces photographes avec leur caméra-écran était assez drôle. Etant la seule qui ne photographiais pas « La Joconde » j’étais vite repérable par le personnel parmi la foule des photographes normaux ! Occupée par mes prises de vues je complètement ignorais le regard soupçonnant du personnel. Bref, ils ne voulaient pas que je les (le personnel) prenne en photo !

YouTube Misunderstood!

YouTube Misunderstood!

Since 2005 YouTube has become the most popular website for video sharing in the world! With millions of users around the web it is considered to be one of the busiest visual platforms! Different Video categories and channels on this site enable the international video sharing public to upload and view a wide variety of visual content free of cost.

Moreover, the role played by amateur videos on this international platform has undoubtedly transformed this video sharing site into the most powerful alternative source of information, as confirmed by the mammoth viewership rates the “buzz” generated by the visual content on this site is unprecedented! However, the recent ban imposed by the Pakistani Government on YouTube proves that the intrinsic functioning principles of this site are highly misunderstood by official authorities on many different levels.

On 22 February 2008, Pakistani IP providers were explicitly ordered to block nationwide access to the entire YouTube site, by the Pakistani Government. This block was a remedial action against, as termed by the Pakistani authorities on, “Blasphemous Visual Content” hosted on the site! Contrary to this belief, the general opinion being circulated in the Net Circles suggests that a slight political detail might be the root of the cause.

The accidental hijacking by a Pakistani ISP of YouTube which crashed its regular service on Sunday, 24 February caused an international outrage! Many in Pakistan and abroad have contested this irrational and impetuous act. Banning access to an entire site makes no sense at all. YouTube is after all a video sharing site. It is a creative international public space which allows “Visual Dialogue” among millions of digital natives across the web globe. As in previous cases deletion, removal or ban of the specific video address sites, could have been an alternative measure to restrict viewership. By restricting access to an entire website, especially YouTube, the authorities certainly miscalculated the “buzz” effect of this popular site!

In today’s international visual culture the role played by alternative media sources like YouTube and Daily motion (in France) is decisive. Banning access to such sites only goes to prove that their actual functioning and social importance and value is completely misunderstood and underestimated by those who continue to ignore the power of the “buzz” created by these visual social sharing sites! The Social Value of these visual plateforms has to be understood. The implications of any action or participation has international implications, be they amateur videos sucess or offical mishaps notriety!

Facebook portrait resparks communication!

These days with so many social networking sites springing up in the Web 2.0 domaine, digital natives are discovering new usage of their personal photos. From Flickr sharing love to Facebook jucy gossip, I guess every Social Network user has some tale to tell of the new experiences that they undergo at these rich, creative, privately public and publicaly private digital hang outs!

Being a Facebook user myself, my activities on this site are very difficult to categorize! From exchanging pokes to serious blog article messages, I interact through various modes of communication with my Digital Facebook friends! With a humble group of 70 odd contacts, my account is hosted on the French Network, since I am a Frenchphile? Not exactly, simply because I am studying and researching in Paris and therefore in all logical aspects I am more intereseted in interacting with my real life french contacts.

So why do I prefer interacting with my friends through Facebook? As mentioned earlier there are numerous applications that have changed digital communication on this site. These range from pokes, likeness quizzes, invites, requests, tests you name it and Facebook has a pelothera of strange digitized means of keeping contact or rather should we say keeping informed on your digital friends activities! However, for me the two most intriguing applications hosted on the profile page of a Facebook account holder are the status "is" and the portrait!

My friend's update status inform not only about "what they are doing right now", but also at what time they changed their digital Identity mood. Words are only words and as the chinese proverb goes: "A Picture is worth a thousand words" likewise the Portrait on the Facebook profile page serves more than one purpose! I will not delve into the polysemic nature of portraits and their historical significance in todays narcisstic society. That is an experts job. I only want to "share" my creative experience regarding my Profile portrait change.

According to my Facebook "friends" I am the odd one out who changes her "is" status more than 10 times during a 24 hour Facebook day! Recently, however, it was a change of my profile picture that sparked up communication from previously dorment contacts!

Today, after quite a daring and premediated "passionately pink for the cure" cause, I decided to go for a chop at my hair! As a visual support message to my best friend (on the Pakistan Facebook Network) who is beseiged with Brest Cancer, I decided to express my solidarity towards her silent suffering through my new portrait. Instead of explaining my action through my "is" status I opted for a more physical and personal message. On a personal level I was sucessful in reaching out emtionally to my friend as she finally responded to my visual sign after a long defeaning and painful silence.

Suprisingly and most unexpectedly, shortly after posting my new portrait I started receiving mails and messages from my other rather dorment contacts, for whom this visual message was not primarily intended. These mails contrary to the intention of the portrait, complimented my new stylised haircut!! This unexpected "one to many" reaction aroused by a simple and intially "peer to peer" act through the portrait alone proves in more than one way, the power of visual communication and the ambivalent visual interpretation, as caused by this portrait.

Photo Sharing

La solitude se dissipe au fur et à mesure. Plus je m’efface devant l’objectif de ma camera, je me sens d’avantage progresser à la photographie. Les leçons j’en apprends tous les jours mais il est difficile de tout noter. Comme ma recherche traite les nouvelles pratiques des images sur les réseaux de partage numérique il me faut, bref, c’est conseillé que je pratique d’abord moi-même la photo.

Il est instructif de voir comment la perception visuelle change. Cinquième semaine de photo et je me rends compte qu’il faut aller doucement ! Au début, l’enthousiasme l’emportait sur l’analyse et je me trouvais avec centaines de photos que je ne pouvais même pas analyser tranquillement. La joie de pratiquer la photo sérieusement pour la première fois et de produire plus, se transforme maintenant dans un désir de savoir analyser cette pratique.

Il est intéressant de voir comment tout le monde prétend posséder une grille de lecture des photos. Récemment, mon échec absolu dans un exercice d’analyse iconographique m’a relevé que je me suis fait la même illusion de savoir interpréter le sens de la photo ! Sans avoir lu, ni rechercher sur les éléments de contextualisation que demandait cet exercice, j’ai hâtivement commencé par décrire la photo et ses plans en faisant des hypothèses banales. Déçue et dégoûtée par mon travail à peine réfléchi, j’ai recommencé de point zéro. Donc, après une rupture provisoire, je suis sortie avec ma camera pour cicatriser mon angoisse.

Heureusement, le problème d’où aller et quoi photographier est résolu. Je sors, je regarde et ce qui me plaît je prends en photo. Aujourd’hui, après avoir lu « Complexe de Gradiva » je me suis soulagée de mon échec d’interprétation iconographique. Tout le monde n’est pas Walter Benjamin, ni Roland Barthes et surtout pas moi !!!

Avec le guide de photo (prêté), j’ai pris mon temps à le lire afin de comprendre les techniques concernant la profondeur de champ. J’en ai toujours quelques soucis mais je crois avoir compris l’essentiel aujourd’hui. Mes observations : Prendre peu de photos pour les analyser tranquillement après. Observer les gens qui utilisent les « point et shoot »on en apprend beaucoup ce qu'on a oublié, par exemple comment l’œil doit juger la profondeur de champ, la lumière, la distance de l’objet photographié pour mieux régler l’appareil. C’est un long chemin à parcourir mais une fois apprises, ces techniques aident à mieux analyser non seulement le moment de la prise de vue mais aussi l’œuvre produite à la fin. Je crois qu’en pratiquant la photo consciemment on apprend aussi à se faire une grille de lecture pour lire les photos et aussi comprendre les situations de leur production ! En lisant les commentaires de Benjamin dans « La petite histoire de la photographie » je me suis rendu compte de l’erreur possible par tout amateur, celle de croire trouver dans la photo l’étincelle d’une présence indéfinissable que seule la photo peut capturer de l’instantané. ( en réalité Benjamin s'est informé du texte "L'Esprit de mon père 1912" Max Daugthedney, pour pouvoir commenter sur la photo de Daugthendey de 1857)

Cependant, aujourd’hui en prenant les gens inconnus à Louvre en photo, j’ai partagé mon temps et mon expérience avec eux. Nous sommes liés à ce moment capturé par l’appareil. Quand, je mets sur Flickr ces photos pour les analyser je rends publique ce qui était déjà publique, mais qui passe par ma collection et sélection de prise de vue. Ainsi, deviens-je le point privé dont passe le publique à la sphère publique ?!

Visionnage photographique!

De premiers clics crantifs, après trois semaines de pratique (pas tellement rigoureuse pour un amateur comme moi) mes doigts commencent à glisser automatiquement sur les boutons de la camera! La coordiantion entre l'oeil, l'image cible et le reglage de la camera s'installe et cela est un grand merveille pour un digital natif comme moi!!

Les rues de Paris offrent une vue splendide: monuments historiques, de beaux cieux et des quartiers animés. Cependant, je m'amuse aussi quand les souvenirs de mes anciennes pratiques photographiques réapparaissent et se manifestent dans d'autres photographes de la rue. Touristes ou non, tout le monde me semble posséder une camera cachée, une camera de poche! Je n'ai rien contre cette nouvelle pratique visuelle du XXIè siècle. Pourtant, c'est la manière dans laquelle se déroule le processus photographique qui m'intéresse!Il sera naïf de porter jugement avant même de comprendre et de décrire ce qui se passe dans les rues au sujet de la photo!

De plus en plus de gens utilisent la camera "point and shoot" digital. Au lieu de regarder à travers le viseur, la tendance est plutôt de regarder l'image sur l'écran plat même avant sa prise! C'est à dire, l'oeil de ces amateurs photographes ne s'habitue plus à cadrer ce qu'ils voient dans le viseur. ( oui, j'utilise le mot "amateur" pour ces derniers qui pratiquent le point and shoot) L'image cible apparaît déjà sur un écran. Avec le tout reglage automatique pris en charge par la technologie haute gamme de l'appareil, l'oeil s'éloigne de la camera et se rapproche de l'image affichée sur l'écran!

Est-ce que cette distanciation de l'oeil de la camera et son rapprochement de l'image sur un écran n' efface -t-elle pas une étape essentielle dans le processus photographique?
Pourquoi , aujourd'hui l'oeil semble avoir une faim interminable de visionner l'image sur un écran plutôt de la regarder à travers le viseur pour l'enregistrer? Est-ce que la dernière pratique est devenue une vieille habitude?

Faute d'expérience et entrainement professionnel, je ne sais pas répondre à mes propres questions, au moins à ce point là!

Pourtant, dans le domaine de l'enregistrement de l'image ce changement de pratique photographique s'est installé et il nous rèvele la popularisation d'une nouvelle pratique de visionnage pour faire la photo!

Research is not tough its just too much thinking and every human has his/her own way of looking at things. History, an impression of how things happened at a given time in a given situation cannot be disassociated from this mamouth task of asking questions, about delving into the past and having the courage to ask why?

Currently studying the background of the Photography revolution and especially refering to the work of Walter Benjamin in this field, I am asking questions that go back to the Industrial revolution.

Why does the western mind set want to dominate through mechanization ?

Why does the west venerate, literally venerates art? Obviously if you have Cathederals and Basilicas everywhere viewed more as museums of art and cultural heritage in the secular west then art does become your number one capital investement!!!

Why is philosophy engrained in the western mind set and what philosophy is it?

Everything has a beginning and an end. The end of one element is the beginning of another, that is how life as through nature teaches us. The problem however with me I think lies how (culturallly and religiously) human beings look at the "end"

Time is a great teacher! Time is needed to bring about change! Change which can move a crowd of millions of voices to echo "We Want Change!"

Today, exactly one month after the Democrate Candidate Barack Obama's wooing, wining speech delieverd in Nashua, New Hampshire this year, CHANGE is not only sweeping over the U.S.A but also the Internet realm. The 13'09 min video clip Yes We Can put on You Tube a month ago by the candidate's campaign party has already a strong and steady audience of 266,243 views to date.However, the real action has just started to kick off with Will.I.am.'s remix version Yes We Can-Barack Obama Music Video

Airing on You Tube on the 2nd of Feburary 2008, this 4'30 min emotion packed remix of Obama's inspirational vision of hope for the America the way he sees is already enjoying a massive snowball effect.Within less than 6 days after being posted, this Star studded clip has already been viewed over 2 million times on You Tube!The why and how of this inspirational clip according to the prime initiator of the project, Will.i.am, is self explanatory!

However, the amazing fact remains is how the viewership numbers on You Tube of the remix version have just soared sky high in such a short time and will continue to do so (at least I am betting on it!) Suprisingly, the polite request by the star to refrain from disrespectful comments does NOT seem utopic!! So far there are fairly positive video replies on the site.

Another earlier inspirational clip (of the same speech ) which aired on 27 January "Fired up, Ready to go!" on You Tube however, enjoys comparitively less success!

Nevertheless, the sing song, repetitive, musical nature of Obama's (the new Dr. Martin Luther King) speeches are inspiring the potential voters to express themseleves creatively.

True, creative and musical participation is happening and it surely is being broadcasted and archived on You Tube! Power to the people or plain simple mash up creative virality, whatever you may call it, its phenomenal and its happening!

You are the TUBE ! YOU are the people!

Regrets du passé! Leçon apprise!

Eh bien, la camera est devenue indispensable pas seulement de point de vue du photojournalisme mais aussi pour soi!

En octobre 2007, France, le pays de mon rêve d'adolescence romantique, m'a montré tout une autre face de sa réalité politique et sociale. Faute d'avoir trop rêvé j'étais complètement bouleversée par les scènes de violence et d'injustice sociale dans les rues, surtout qui touchaient l'université française, les étudiants et la recherche!

Victime d'un désenchantement et un dégoûtement qui m'ont secoué de toute leur force, j'ai perdue tous mes repères! Certes toutes, les universités ont été violement frappées par une vague interminable de grève contre la nouvelle loi LRU, des blocages et de confusion, mais ma propre expérience à Nanterre était assez frappante!

Le bruit de l'incertitude, la grève des transports en commun, les regards perdus, les foules devant les entrées d'amphi pour les AGs, la charge des CRS, les entrées bloquées par les chaises et les tables, tous cela pour mes yeux pakistanais était un choc. L'instabilité politique chez moi peut-être ne m'avait pas tellement engourdie ou bien j'avais simplement fermé mes yeux de l'esprit en ne regardant que mes yeux insensibles rêvaient de voir!

Heuresement à cette époque j'assitais aussi au séminaire "Images entre histoire et mémoire" au Lhivic de l'INHA. Avec les cours annulés indéfinitivement à Nanterre, c'était rassurant de pouvoir apprendre dans la présence des esprits éclairés( le prof et y compris un groupe dynamique de ses étudiants ou plutôt ses fans!)

Je n'oublierai jamais de ma vie ce qui m'est arrivé le jour quand ce séminaire a été annulé seulement une fois pendant la période turbulente des grèves. Déprimée par les difficultés du moment, j'ai écrit une bêtise sur mon status"is"de Facebook! En réponse, j'ai recue ma première grande leçon concernant la recherche par le professeur de ce séminaire (avantage d'avoir un vrai réseau social!) et je cite,"La vraie recherche ne s'arrête pas aux murs de l'université! Il faut prendre son appareil photo et aller prendre des photos!"

Je suis allée dans la rue où les manifestations se déroulaient, mais à cette époque là je ne voulais pas confronter la réalité et à force de l'avoir critiquée dans mon incompréhension avant même de l'avoir observée, je n'ai pas eu le courage de prendre des photos!

Je le regrette énormément!!

La prise de conscience d'une erreur est peut-être le premier pas vers un vrai apprentissage! Depuis deux semaines je pratique la photo! Comme cela se dit en anglais: "You learn the most when you are out of your comfort zone!" On apprend d'avantage quand on n'est plus dans sa zone de confort! je commence à apprendre avec mon appareil!

La recherche commence par l'observation et observer avec la caméra les prises de vues de l'instantané est devenu une merveille pour moi! Hier, quand je passais devant l'amphi de ma fac, l'exposition des photos de la grève a pris mon attention! En supprimant le regret de ne pas avoir suivi le conseil jusqu'au bout de mon prof, j'ai sorti mon téléphone portable ce que j'utilise rarement pour la photo maintenant, et j'ai capturé en photo les souvenirs pixalisé par les courageux de cette époque!

Comme châtiment de ma faiblesse les photos que j'affiche ici sont d'une très mauvaise qualité! Une leçon apprise à vie!!

The saying goes, "Whenever a student is ready,the Master appears!" In my case today, something similar happened.

I have been struggling to learn the technicalities of Photography since the past one and a half week. Inspired by one of the most coolest teachers in Paris of the Lhivic, I keep telling myself if he believes in me then there must be something to it! With this mantra, I finally decided to change my camera lens to a zoom 70 to 200 Canon. With this new power lens I took a shot from my window and my technical instinct ( though still in its imature stage) conviced me to take up my satchel and head out for some serious photography!

Paris is amazing! Nothing ever stops here and it is a photographers haven! So, with Walter Benjamin's "Works" in hand and my Canon 400D safely tucked in my satchel I headed out for Montmarte! Clear skies, a rarety at this time of the year, provided excellent weather conditions for a good shoot, but what should be the composition? Afterall I am not a tourist any longer, I am an amateur photographer! With this in my mind, I decided to experiment with perspectives and angles. I chose vantage points for different angles and various perspectives to test the lens capacity. The best part of all this exercice were two important observations.

Firstly, it is interesting to see street photographers using more and more digital and preferably point and shoot cameras. Looking through the viewfinder is a custom that is slowly fading away! However, there are still a few staunch believers of putting their true photographical skills to the technical test! Adhering to the second school of thought, I started flickring with my professional lens and immediately caught the attention of bystanders and other tourist photographers.Intrestingly the angles from where I shot inspired other, mostly tourist photographers, as well. I laughed at myself, at the thought that these people imagined me to be some kind of a freak professional.

Secondly, I realized that "When the photographer is ready, the artist appears!" Montmarte streets are beautiful you can shoot different angles, there are so many vantage points. Today was indeed my lucky lens day, for there was a street shoot being performed in one of these tiny streets. It was amazing for me to see the procedure. The cameras, the lights and most of all the artists! Drawing inspiration from this sensational technical and artistic set up I intutively clicked away as scenes rolled infront of my eyes; I shot the shooting team, the artists, the bystanders and for once I felt one with my camera! The previous week's mind boggling exercices at the Luxembourg Gardens and the exhaustive photo blog reads, finally paid off!

Pleased but not entirely satisfied, as there are still so many techniques that I need to understand in order to master them, I am starting to believe in myself. Photography for me is like an enormous jig-saw puzzle! You have to look at the different pieces separately first in order to understand the larger picture that they constitute! For me the larger picture is still unclear but atleast I am learning to look at the smaller pieces now!

La déception des lettres en chaîne sur Facebook!

L'image de la Vièrge, la Sainte dans la messagerie Facebook maintenant!!! Ce phénomène des messages saints et miraculeux remonte aux pratiques virales du mail MSN!

Je me rappelle très bien que pendant mes concours (quand je me servais de MSN) je faisais attention à régulièrement vérifier si par hasard je n'avais pas cassé le rythme de la sacrée lettre en chaîne. De peur d'encourir une malédiction dévastatrice je croyais avec une foi aveugle, comme d'autres adhérents participants du jeu, de pouvoir transmettre du bonheur virtuel sur Internet.

Malheureusement, mes mauvaises notes en Maths continuaient à résister avec une plus forte ardeur à la viralité du bonheur promis par ces lettres miraculeuses. Pas si bête que je me croyais, je me suis vite délassée de cette pratique déceptrice! Mais la lettre a continué à évoluer et peu récemment elle a changée de fond! Souvent porteuse d'une image sainte maintenant, comme celle de la Vièrge que je viens de découvrir postée sur mon Super Wall du compte Facebook, ces lettres anondines de sens usent des oeuvres d'art classique!

Je suis énervée par cette atteinte de mon espace de Facebook par cette bêtise virale, dont le destinateur, une très bonne amie d'ailleurs, n'est même pas croyante de la foi propagée par l'icône!

Pourquoi ces messages vides de sens et de respect continuent à circuler sur des réseaux sociaux et même sur Facebook? En regardant ce message je ne suis plus tourmentée par le souvenir angoissant de mes mauvaises notes mais cette lettre est provacteur d'un souvenir d'une pratique ancienne qui m'a dupé pendant pas mal de temps!

La "e-reproductibilité" (en cours)

Une oeuvre se distingue, dans l'ère de la reproducitibilité technique, par la particularité et le dynamisme de la technique qui y est un élément quintessentiel pour sa reproductibilité. L'ère de l'Internet présente d'énormes possibilités pour observer la genèse des oeuvres visuelles sur les sites de partage, où l'évolution technique du domaine du visuel se montre de plus en plus au devant de la scène dans la "e-reproductibilité".

Depuis la naissance de la pellicule la possibilité de capturer en images (muettes ou sonores) l'espace et le temps habités par l'homme est devenue plus forte qu'un simple désir pour le visuel. De la photographie à la cinématographie, les techniques d'engregistrement et du montage des images ne cessent de développer. Les acteurs, les réalisateurs et les spectateurs des oeuvres visuelles se retrouvent depuis le 19 è siècle jusqu'à aujourd'hui, tous au tour d'un appareillage technique qui les réunit pour visionner une oeuvre.

Qu'est-ce qu'il est devenu de cet appareillage technique aujourd'hui et comment a-t-il évolué? Le regard que portaient les réalisateurs de l'image jadis, ont ils subit un changement technique de la prise de vue et de son montage? Aujourd'hui à force d'être submergé dans un univers visuel qui s'étend partout sous le regard, la tâche de remettre en cause son existence est devenu non seulement difficle mais parait aussi anodine. Cependant, il serait instructif de porter le regard au déplacement des contenus visuels de leur canal traditionnel de production et de diffusion à un nouveau canal : L'Internet.

L'observation de changement d'un canal à l'autre des oeuvres visuelles souligne non seulment les caractéristiques spécifiques du canal mais aussi la spécificité technique de l'oeuvre déplacée! C'est dans cet esprit de recherche que j'aimerais bien observer les pratiques visuelles sur Internet. Que montrent-elles ces oeuvres qui s'affichent et pixalisent sur l'écran de l'ordinateur?

Est-ce que le contenu visuel de ces oeuvres du 5è pouvoir démontre une nouveauté technique?

A ce propos, il est intéressant d'observer deux sites de partage des "e-oeuvres", You Tube (vidéo-clips) et Flickr (photos) qui présentent chacune une architecture différente par rapport à la présentation du contenu visuel. Qu'est-ce qui fait de ces sites leur envergure qu'ils attirent un énorme trafic d'internaute régulier? Est-ce le déplacement de la diffusion de l'image ou plutôt la possibilité de sa production et reproduction sur ces architectures qui fait leur succès? Est-ce que ces sites promovoient la création d'une nouvelle culture visuelle globale dont s'inspirent même les réalisateurs de l'image des canaux traditionnel?

Avant de se pencher vers l'ampleur des "e-oeuvres" il serait mieux de les décrire afin de comprendre comment la technique de leur reproductibilité est une condition fondamentale pour la reprise qui ne se limite plus à l'Internet, mais a atteint aussi la Télévision et le Cinéma.

Un objet digne d'être photographié

Je me suis livrée à la photograpie technique depuis très peu de temps, je la découvre et en même temps me découvre également (surtout mes rapports avec la technique)! Avant de se pencher vers cet exercice rigoureux je me posais moins de question sur la nature de mes photos. La plupart d'entre elles étaient des portraits, des autoportraits ou quelques paysages qui me semblaient beaux et dignent d'être photographiés !

Ces derniers temps je m'interroge sur le sujet de la beauté! Doit-on seulement capturer en image des vues, des objets (animés ou inanimés) qui semblent beaux? Qu'est-ce qui définit la beauté? Pourquoi la valeur cultuelle l'emporte-t-elle souvent sur la valeur d'exposition quand il s'agit de la photographie dite de l'amateur?Bref, qu'est-ce qui fait d'un objet qu'il soit digne d'être photographié? N'est-il pas le regard porté sur l'objet qui lui rend important d'être capturé ?

L'acte de choisir un objet exige un certain entraînement au cours duquel l'oeil apprend à séléctionner, à apprécier certains éléments de son environnement qui jadis restaient inconnus à la vue. Mais par quels procédés on arrive à ce niveau et comment en prendre conscience? Je crois que la photographie technique se présente comme un bon exercice d'entraînement à cette fin. En tout cas je m'en profite. Quelque soit l'appareil et son influence sur la technique de prise de vue, ce qui reste essentiel à cette activité est le savoir faire technique de l'activité elle-même!

Zilla! Camera! Action! & Camera Again! Cut!

Monster, screams, pandemonium and the camera shoots and keeps shooting weird angles.

In the most recent edition of the "Time" magazine 28 Sept,2008, Lev Grossman recounts human obsession of the Apocalypse made manifest through the Cinema in his article "Apocalypse Now". The long awaited surprise of 01-18-08 by J.J Abrams is another Crazy Monster going berserk in the streets of Manhattan or is it just that?

Is it 9/11 ? Is it a remake of Godzilla? Is it shot on the Blair Witch project cinematographic lines? All these viewers questions will only lead to more subjective responses which would jump to a hasty conclusion even before analysing the intention of the producer.

Have we seen J.J Abrams work before? He is after all the creator of Felicity, Lost, Mission Impossible III and Alias. Refering to a few of his explanations in an online Time article on his attempt to " there had to be another way to do a monster movie!" he highlights quite a few significant elements related to the shooting of "Cloverfield."

So what was the alternative way adopted by Abrams to relook his version of a Mad Monster Movie? Simple.. he explains," we came up with the You Tub-ification of things, the ubiquity of video cameras, cell phones with cameras. There are hundreds of incidents and images out of Iraq on handheld video that are horrifying. All of those images we considered because they show the way things actually look!"

How do things "actually look?" Apocaplyse or not! Monster Zilla or not! One thing we can all be sure of that this remark on the way things are being viewed actually through the lens of the many "You Tubers" the meaning and significance of Visual content on this network site is rapidly and undeniably increasing! From inspiring parodies on the Small screen to influencing camera shots on the Silver screen, everybody is learning to look at and with You Tube!

Crazy stuff "Here it goes again"!

Researching on crazy stuff( creative videos) becoming highly volatile and viral on You Tube teaches you a lot about life. Recently skimming through the Highly creative content regarding "Evolution of Dance" termed as one of the most viral videos on You Tube, I stumbled on this crazily amazing video, "Here it goes again" posted by the group OK GO.

Amazingly the video clip debuted first on You Tube, 31 July 2006 and since then has already been viewed about more than 28 million times on this site. This 3'04 min video is surely rocking not only in g.y.m s. Grey's Anatomy featured this song in their January 2007 episode 13"Great Expectations" of Season 3. Amateur parodies on You Tube have also spawned up in a period of one and a half year almost. Most of them reuse the music, which is luckily not copyrighted and only a few dared copying the crazy treadmill routine ( I tried a similar stint once in my younger g.y.m going days, its tough!)

However, as of 1 January 2008, the steadily growing viewership of this Hit Single on You Tube has made it the 4 th most Favoured Video and the 19 th most viewed video of this website.

So are we going to see Music Artists putting up there work voluntarily on You Tube first?
Ok Go 's Hit single was realised on the 25 th of September 2006, 25 days after its debuting on You Tube!!
Are Television shows going to copy Pop Culture preferably being aired first on You Tube?
Is traditional media being out done by newer means of Internet Networked diffusion sites?
Will You Tube reign supreme and isn't it already?

Learning how to see before looking! Cameras everywhere!

The mechanical eye is everywhere! From surveillance cameras to camera phones, you name it and you can see it, the presence of the camera is ubiquitous. The boom in the technological sphere has led to an exaggerated popularisation of the magic picture box. From the magic lantern in China to your portable camera phone, the art of photography is certainly going under rapid technological change.

However, the important question remains how we, as consumers of this universal technology are reacting to this crazy mechanical evolution? Isn't it better to know what one consumes before actually consuming something? Shouldn't photography be taught as a visual studies discipline, before we put cameras in our children's hands? Shouldn't every child experience the technical aspects of photography to be better equipped in the visual digital world?

My current souci regards the way we interact with the Camera lens. Having used Automatic Zoom Cameras with an LCD point and shoot display screen, I am finding it extremely difficult to judge the distance of the lens from the object. Having been so used to focusing with AF on the display screen and shooting, it is indeed cumbersome now to look through the lens. This is where I believe the decisive moment begins.

Undergoing this indecisive moment regarding visual distance while looking through the lens is teaching me to have a another look at what our sight actually beholds! Lens adjustment, focal distance judgment and many other necessary procedures that go along with image capturing that I am unaware of at the moment, guide and train the eye . Visual judgement through the lens highlights factors such as space and time, motion and stillness, light and shadow. While learning to synchronise the mechanical eye with optical vision I am discovering new aspects of sight!

Hopefully some time in the very near future I too will be able to live what Bresson believed in :
"Ability to select a decisive moment is the defining greatness of a photographer"

Confessions of an amateur photographer

The age of Digital Photography has successfully led us to believe that we are all adroit photographers. Recently, I found myself in quite an embarrassing situation with my new Canon EOS400D. It's a beautiful machine, a machine that can capture images. This last thought, however, disturbs me. The most common error that all photographers of the digital age are indulging in is this very misconception : the machine takes the picture.

I too was a firm believer of "You click the button and we will do the rest!" Until recently, however, I discovered that I had to do more than just be a believer of the "Push down button generation!"

My curiosity and desire to learn all the functions of the small buttons on my camera, drove me to skim through Photo Blogs. I searched , clicked, read, reread and understood nothing. I just could not make sense of all the photography lingo! My eyes exhausted, I finally realised my mistake. Vision, Light, speed and camera. If I could just figure out how my eyes work to produce sight, then maybe I could understand the mechanical process of image focusing, capturing and reconstruction.Inspired by this thought I set out understanding how the optical vision works and started to draw parallels with its mechanical versions. By switching all the technical terminology with simple words like, pupil :aperture:black void, I created my own terminology to understand the technical functioning of a camera.

I am still at it. It is indeed a time consuming exercise, an exercise I would have never indulged in if I had simply bought an entirely digital camera. If the latter would have been the case, then I am afraid I could have never realised the fact that the eye captures the image and not the camera. The photographer's eyes, his decision of the decisive moment, his manipulation of the mechanical eye determine the capturing and the recreation of anything! Optical sight gives visual existence!Without proper knowledge of the technical aspects of photography, I consider myself blind, both physically and psychologically!

Now whenever I put my eye against the viewfinder I recall to myself that I am looking through a machine, a mechanical eye that can focus, capture and regulate light to recreate the image that my sight beholds! A camera is blind, its a dark whole with intricate systems that need manipulation. Even automated photography requires prior setting and adjustment!

Experiencing a technical approach to photography is indeed a marvellous activity. It reveals certain quintessential concepts of human existence and behaviour towards machines which escape our thought process. Why? Maybe we are too busy pushing the button!! We want to look before we can actually see!
