The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) announced today that it will start inviting applications for the Tokyo 2020 Games volunteer programme from 26 September 2018. Volunteers will provide valuable support for the operation of the Games in a variety of roles at competition venues and at the Athletes’ Village, and their contribution will be a key factor in the Games’ success.

Games volunteers will have a unique opportunity to provide support in a number of areas, including spectator guidance, competition operation and media operation. They will be deployed in various locations including competition venues and the Athletes’ Village.

Tokyo 2020 is seeking to offer up to 80,000 volunteer opportunities. It welcomes applications from all people with a passion to contribute to the success of the Games.

The exact closing date for applications will be announced on the Tokyo 2020 website at a later date!
Open for All. and All persons born on or before 1 April 2002 are free to apply to become a Games volunteer
A regular driving license will be required for some activities in the ‘transportation support’ category. Apart from that, no particular qualifications will be required.
Japanese nationals or persons with valid visas permitting residence in Japan during the volunteer period (including temporary visitors).

Finnish Government’s International Gender Equality Prize

The call for proposals for the Finnish Government’s International Gender Equality Prize is now open to the public. The prize, which will be awarded for the second time in autumn 2019, can go to a person or organization working to promote gender equality in an internationally significant way

The prize, established in 2017 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence, was first awarded to Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel, whose life’s work has made her one of the world’s most influential people and an example to many women and girls.

The International Gender Equality Prize is awarded once every two years in cooperation with the City of Tampere. The next prize will be awarded in autumn 2019.

Benefits
The prize includes a sum of EUR 300,000, which is intended not for the recipients themselves, but is rather directed to a cause that advances gender equality.

FACEBOOK TO LAUNCH OWN COIN ICO
Social media giant Facebook will launch its very own cryptocurrency via an ICO .
An ‘exclusive source’ told the news outlet that the company plans to launch a coin called Facebook Coin (FBC).

Transactions will be anonymous but users will first have to register to use the coin.
Whether or not Facebook would enter the crypto-sphere has been the topic of hot debate for some time now. Many were doubtful because of negative comments founder Mark Zuckerberg has made in the past.
However, some would argue that a coin from a company as influential as Facebook wouldn’t need much pushing.

Information regarding the ICO’s funding goals is yet to emerge, however given the status of Facebook as an industry leader and a member of the group of tech titans dubbed FAAMG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Google) it is likely that Facebook will rival Telegram.

Zuckerberg stated in response: “You may have heard about a quiz app built by a university researcher that leaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014. This was a breach of trust, and I’m sorry we didn’t do more at the time. We’re now taking steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again….Thank you for believing in this community. I promise to do better for you.”

Facebook has often been accused of using its algorithms to influence election results, along with public opinion on various hot button issues. The company is also known to demonetize channels and videos it disagrees with, politically.

As such, Zuckerburg is no doubt keen to change the conversation, so to speak, regarding his precious creation. Entering the cryptocurrency world via an earth-shattering ICO will no doubt achieve this goal.

If a native currency is created for Facebook, it will likely function in the same way as other social coins, I.e., allow users to tip content creators with actual currency rather than simply liking and sharing.

A native coin would allow Facebook to become a genuine ecosystem, wherein the company has less hold over what thrives and what fails.

Users would decide what gets promoted and what doesn’t, rather than background algorithms. If all this is true, the platform is in store for a major shift in operations. Watch this space…

The Taiwan Fellowship

is established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to award foreign experts and scholars interested in researches related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, Asia-Pacific region and Chinese studies to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan. The Taiwan Fellowship, echoing the APEC Scholarship Initiative, provides 12 Chinese Taipei APEC Fellowship openings per year exclusively for scholars and experts from developing APEC economies. The application process will begin in May 2016, and recipients will begin their research in Taiwan in January 2017.

I. Financial asisstance

Monthly grants are paid at the beginning of every month.
Professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows: NT$60,000.
Assistant professors, assistant research fellows, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral program students, and other candidates recommended by ROC (Taiwan) missions: NT$50,000.
One round-trip, economy-class ticket for the most direct route to Taiwan (not applicable to those already doing research in Taiwan. The subsidy will be decided by MOFA in accordance with the relevant regulations).
The terms of fellowship are three to 12 months.
Accident insurance (plus a medical insurance for accidental injuries) coverage of NT$1 million.

II. Eligibility

Applicants shall be foreign professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral program students, or same-level research fellows from academic institutions abroad who specialize in social sciences or humanities related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia Pacific, or other aspects of Chinese studies.
Applicants recommended by ROC (Taiwan) overseas missions with a field of study on Taiwan’s foreign relations or cross-strait relations.

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the first UN General Assembly resolution, which established the goal of eliminating nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs is pleased to sponsor the UN Poster for Peace Contest.
The contest aims to raise awareness of the need for nuclear disarmament and to inspire citizens across the globe to add their voices, and use their artistic talents, to promote a world free of nuclear weapons.
Eligibility:
Anyone of any age can enter this contest, and it is open to all people in all countries. Children below the age of 13 will need to have their parents’ permission, and will need to have parents (or a legal guardian) help with their submissions.
Specifications:
Art work must be original, submitted by the artist. It should be developed such that it could be displayed in a 60 by 90 centimetres (2 feet x 3 feet) format.
Entries must be two dimensional using either traditional methods (pens, pencils, crayons, charcoal, oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolour, etc.) or modern digital illustration process.
As all art work must be fully original, no entries will be accepted or considered if they are deemed to use in whole or part derivative images which could be considered plagiaristic.

2016 Eisaku Sato Essay Contest Now Open

Submissions are now being accepted for the 32nd Eisaku Sato Essay Contest. This international contest is open to anyone who has an interest in both the United Nations University and the designated contest topic. There are no restrictions as to age, nationality, or profession.

The theme of the 2016 contest is:

“Considering the multiple and pressing challenges the United Nations faces today, what is the proper role of the Secretary-General as top international public servant? Discuss the required qualities and discipline of a Secretary-General in view of the practices and achievements of the successive Secretary-Generals.”

Essays may be written in either English (3,000–6,000 words) or Japanese (8,000–16,000 characters). All essays should be printed on A4-size paper and include an abstract of up to 450 words (English) or 1,200 characters (Japanese).

Submissions must be original and unpublished papers, and must include reference notes and a bibliography if other authors’ works are cited.

A grand prize (¥500,000), a second prize (¥200,000) and several honorable mentions (¥50,000 each) will be awarded. The winners will be notified by September 2016.

To enter the 2016 Eisaku Sato Essay Contest, submit your essay along with a cover sheet listing your name, affiliation, age, gender, nationality, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone/fax number (if available), and a note on how you learned about the contest.

The deadline for submissions is midnight (Japan Time) on 31 March 2016.

Fact 1: Human genome determine several physical factors as skin, hair and eye color, shape of body and limbs, and so many more from baldness to disease tendencies.
