Claudio Domenicali Unveils New Ducati Desmosedici GP10 at WROOOM

There was a packed schedule again on the second day of Wrooom 2010 at Madonna di Campiglio today, with Claudio Domenicali coming under the spotlight in this morning's press conference. The General Manager of Ducati Motor later joined Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden on the spectacular Patascoss slope to unveil the new Ducati Desmosedici GP10, the Ducati Marlboro Team's latest weapon in the chase for the MotoGP title, against the dramatic backdrop of the Dolomites - recently added by Unesco to their World Natural Heritage list.

“Faith is the key word that Ducati are using in looking ahead to 2010, in a variety of aspects,” said Domenicali. "We have a team that certainly makes us think we can approach the championship with great hope. Nicky and Casey are two riders who don’t need any type of introduction. We have faith in the company, because it has a solid, stable base in the Bonomi family, and it’s a company that has managed 2009 well: the motorcycle market had a big decline in 2009 — the market declined by over 30 percent, a very heavy, difficult amount. But our company managed very well and we dropped 'only' 18 percent. In fact, in 2009, we had the largest share that the company has ever enjoyed historically. So also from the economic point of view, the company knew how to control very carefully its costs and manage 2009 well. For example, we didn’t cut or eliminate any development of future models, something that’s fundamental for the future health of the company. We have faith in the championship, because I see that Carmelo Ezpeleta (CEO, Dorna Sports) — here with us — has come through a truly difficult moment, with great character. He’s always been present in person, and he’s somebody with whom you can have a relationship and a dialogue, so it’s very important for our company to be present in a championship run in this manner and Carmelo is thanked personally for this. We have faith in our sponsors, because 2009, as I said, has been very difficult and yet we’ve managed to continue to work very well with them. We have a very important main sponsor in Marlboro and other important partners like Telecom, Generali, Enel, Riello ups, that have been with us and grown with us over a long period of time. We also have faith in the media, who are well represented in this sport.”

Domenicali continued by discussing the recent changes to Ducati Marlboro Team management.

"2009 was a year — even from a sporting perspective — that was difficult and complicated. Nicky found things harder than he or we expected but he gave us a great lesson because he never lost his good attitude, he always had a spirit of great optimism and positivity. We were able to put at his disposition a bike that permitted him to obtain results that were in line with his talent. He gave us a podium at Indianapolis and he kept improving the whole season. Casey was very fast from the start, as he always is, and had great potential. Of course what happened at mid-season affected the season, but I believe that everyone — from Casey to us — has described what happened and clarified it so it seems useless for me to continue to give details. The important thing, in my opinion, is that today we have Casey with us, probably in the best health we’ve ever seen him. We have reason for optimism for both riders. There have also been some changes to the management, with Alessandro Cicognani and Vittoriano Guareschi coming in, having shown themselves in the team to have competence and perhaps even bring things that were missing. It’s I believe that this important change leaves the company in a solid situation, also because it’s in some way personalized by an incredible talent as Filippo Preziosi, who is the true engine of all our racing activities, and he remains safe, solid, and dedicated. I believe it’s a change in the continuity, if we can define it that way.

And, of course, he detailed some of the main changes to the Ducati Desmosedici GP10.

"The main changes to the bike are based on the rule changes, so the major part of the work was done precisely to make it perform better using only six engines for the entire championship. It’s a very important difference, because we were used to using more-or-less one engine per race, so to switch from eighteen engines to six is a very important adjustment. To go 1,600 kilometers with an engine that goes over 19,000 rpm isn’t a simple assignment. All of the main parts were redesigned — pistons, rods, crankshaft, the basics. It’s an engine with which our main objective was to minimize the loss of power to increase durability. It was a change that will be very useful and interesting, also because normally in racing, durability isn’t the principal objective. Perhaps this new objective has enabled us to perform a series of experiments that will also be interesting for the new production engines that we’re developing because at this point they become almost comparable. For a production engine, 2,000 kilometers of track use is a severe challenge so we start to think that the race engine durability is comparable with production engines. The second big news isn’t related to the rules, but to our attempt to make the bike more rideable. This has to do with the firing order. We have a motor that, since the switch to 800s, utilized a screamer setup. This has permitted us to have maximum power, which was very important and was probably fundamental with the results that we’ve had in 2007, 2008 and 2009, but at a certain point, we began to wonder whether it could be worthwhile to re-test a way that we’d already followed in the past. The last 1000cc motors that we made in 2005 and 2006 used a big-bang firing order, and this gave us important rideability. We re-tested that way, first trying it on the dyno, then with Vittoriano Guareschi in his previous role as test rider and then with Nicky and Casey. We think we have a bike for 2010 with better traction, and that therefore makes it easier for us to find a good setup. Another part of the work was dedicated to the chassis. In the pursuit of ease of use, we’ve worked to eliminate the bike’s squatting, which is why the entire rear portion of the bike was redesigned. This bike has a rear structure that carries the rider — which we call the seat support — and that also supports the swingarm. That part was redesigned to have six mounting points instead of four; this makes the bike more rigid in a way and it guarantees better rideability and improved rigidity. With respect to the bike we introduced last year, this bike is also aesthetically different because of the redesigned fairing but we already saw that at Estoril."

Logikanya, banyak pilihan oli untuk motor jelas bikin kita senang. Ditambah pihak Agen Tunggal Pemegang Merk (ATPM) motor juga mengeluarkan oli genuine untuk produknya. Tentu bikin kita lebih banyak pilihan dan mudah mencari pelumas untuk kuda besi kita.

Sayangnya, kenyataan di lapangan atau persisnya di bengkel nggak kayak gitu. Banyak biker malah jadi bingung. Mereka sulit nentuin pelumas yang akan dipakai. Masalahnya, karena tiap pabrikan atau ATPM motor mensyaratkan penggunaan oli keluaran mereka untuk jaminan garansi mesin. Sementara itu, gempuran iklan dari produsen oli makin gencar menyebut produk mereka yang terbaik.

Ditambah lagi banyak masukan dari sesama biker yang bilang begitu. So, memilih oli jadi membingungkan, kan? Antara mempertahankan garansi, atau memilih yang terbaik untuk motor kita.

Biar nggak bingung, coba kita tanya pada pihak ATPM motor yang mengeluarkan oli untuk produk mereka. Menurut Reiner M. Sitorus, dari PT Kawasaki Motor Indonesia (KMI), keputusan untuk mengeluarkan oli khusus Kawasaki Genuine Oil (KGO) tak lepas dari upaya mereka melayani konsumen.

"Kami ingin menjaga kepercayaan konsumen dengan memberi kepastian perawatan motor mereka. Dengan oli yang dikeluarkan KMI, tentunya sudah jaminan merawat dan menjaga performa mesin semua produk Kawasaki," jelas Reiner yang juga Senior Manajer Service dan Spare Parts, PT KMI.

Penjelasan Reiner ini tentu akan mirip ATPM lain. Karena dijadikan syarat klaim jaminan mesin motor, ATPM pasti mengeluarkan oli sesuai spek motor mereka.

Tapi perlu juga diketahui, tidak ada ATPM yang benar-benar memproduksi oli. Mereka pasti pesan pada vendor, yang dalam hal ini produsen oli. Masalahnya, ATPM tidak pernah menyebutkan siapa produsen oli itu sebenarnya.

Ini yang bikin konsumen kurang percaya pada oli genuine keluaran ATPM. Malah, bukan mustahil juga, biker berpikir ini usaha ATPM mengeruk tambahan pemasukan. Prasangka terburuk, mutu oli yang disiapkan alakadarnya. Sekadar melumasi, tanpa kelebihan apapun. Tidak membuat putaran mesin jadi lebih enteng, atau yang lain.

Walaupun ini dibantah Reiner. "Oli keluatan ATPM sudah disesuaikan spesifikasi motor buatan mereka. Misalnya, spesifikasi KGO untuk oli 4-tak sudah ikut standar API SL, JASO MA. Yang 2-T API nya sudah FC dengan JASO juga MA. Semua oli semi synthetic," tegas Reiner.

Jadi, yakin lah, ATPM sudah menjamin oli mereka pasti mampu melindungi dan memaksimalkan performa, ya!

PILIHAN SESUAI KONDISI

Okelah jika ATPM jamin olinya sesuai kebutuhan mesin buatan mereka. Lalu, buat biker, apa yang harus diambil? Yang jelas, ambil keuntungannya aja.

Sebagai contoh. Jika motor masih baru, masih dalam masa garansi dari ATPM, gunakan saja pelumas yang disarankan pabrikan motor. Toh jika terjadi sesuatu di mesin, kita bisa klaim kerusakan itu. Dan lagi pula, biasanya oli ATPM dibanderol dengan harga terjangkau.

Di lain pihak, jika masa jaminan mesin sudah berlalu, tidak ada salahnya menggunakan oli lain merek. "Asalkan olinya punya spesifikasi standar API service, JASO dan kekentalannya sama, maka dia bisa dipakai. Hanya saja, biasanya pelumas yang dibuat produsen oli punya bumbu racikan yang beda. Misalnya, punya lapisan film yang lebih tipis namun kuat dan tahan panas. Ini yang membuat harganya jadi lebih mahal sedikit," jelas Thomas Dosy, Head of Business Development Division, PT Topindo Atlas Indonesia, produsen oli Top 1.

So, jangan bingung lagi. Ambil saja yang menguntungkan sesuai situasi dan kondisi.

Watch Out For Car Cooling Problems

The engine cooling system of your car works to keep your engine from overheating and helps it to operate at its highest efficiency. Your cooling system components include the water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat, and fan. When parts of your car cooling system fail, your car engine will overheat and could possibly suffer serious damage.

Signs that your car engine is overheating:

The temperature gauge on your dashboard starts to rise
Steam comes billowing out from under your hood
You hear hissing or pinging sounds
You smell antifreeze boiling over

When any of these car cooling problems occur, stop driving immediately and wait until your car cools down. DO NOT, under any circumstances, attempt to open the radiator or pressure cap.

What's a water pump?

Think of the water pump as the heart of your car’s cooling system — working continuously to circulate engine coolant (antifreeze) from the radiator to the engine and back again. A water pump is powered by a V-belt or serpentine belt mounted on the outside of an engine, or by a timing belt located inside the engine.

How do I know if my water pump is failing?

A failing water pump will give you lots of hints. Look for leaking engine coolant around the pump itself or the surrounding engine. (If your car has a timing belt, you won’t be able to see this because the pump and the timing belt that powers it is located inside the engine). In this case, have your automotive service technician inspect and replace your water pump at the same time you’re performing scheduled preventive maintenance on your engine timing belt, hoses or other car cooling system components.

What's a automotive radiator?

The car's radiator helps disperse the heat that the coolant has absorbed from the engine. It sits just behind the front grille of your car. Inside the radiator are a series of tubes (a.k.a. the radiator core), which circulate a combination of antifreeze and water. Attached to these tubes are thousands of little metal fins, which basically help to pull cooler outside air into this area, cooling the fluid in the tubes and releasing the extra heat into the atmosphere.

What's a coolant hose?

Engine coolant hoses are reinforced synthetic rubber tubes that are made to withstand the strong chemicals in engine coolant, as well as the high heat, vibration, and pressures that take place under the hood. They work year round to carry antifreeze between the engine, radiator and heater, and help maintain proper temperature.

Where are engine coolant hoses located?

Radiator coolant hoses are located in several places around your radiator and engine. The upper radiator coolant hose delivers hot engine coolant from the engine to the radiator. Coolant then circulates through the radiator, and then exits out the lower radiator hose, which returns coolant to the engine. On some engines, a bypass hose circulates coolant through the engine when the thermostat is closed. Heater hoses carry coolant between the engine and the heater core.

How often should my hoses be checked?

At least twice a year at the start of each summer and winter season. If they need replaced, your automotive service tech can do it at the same time he’s flushing the car cooling system and installing new coolant.

How do I know if one of my coolant hoses needs replacement?

First, look on the outside of your hose — if you see any cracks, cuts, abrasions or bulges, the hose needs to be replaced. You can also feel the hose (make sure the engine is turned off and cool) — if it feels excessively soft and mushy, especially at the ends by the clamps, ask your technician to look at it immediately. You could be feeling the most common cause of wear: Electrochemical Degradation (ECD).

What is Electrochemical Degradation (ECD)?

ECD is one of the most common causes of hose wear, but is much more difficult to diagnose because you can’t see it—the hose breaks down from the inside out. Essentially, the engine and its components are made out of different metals. The dirty antifreeze and conglomerate of different metals create an electrical charge in the coolant system as the system is running. When the charge reaches its peak, it discharges as it enters the neck of the hose and can eventually “eat” your hose, first causing the inner tube to etch and crack, which then weakens the next reinforced layer, ultimately causing the hose to have a pinhole leak or burst.

What's a car thermostat?

The car thermostat is a small, 2”-round device that sits between the engine and radiator. Its job is to block the flow of coolant to the radiator until the engine has warmed up. When the car’s engine is cold, the thermostat is completely closed. As the engine warms, the thermostat opens more and more, gradually letting in engine coolant. Once the engine is fully warmed, the thermostat is completely open, keeping the engine at its optimum, constant temperature.

How do I know that my car thermostat is going bad?

If you’re experiencing low heater output, overheating, poor fuel economy, knocking or pinging when accelerating, high idle speed, an electric cooling fan that runs continuously, or low temperature gauge reading, your thermostat could be failing. A faulty car thermostat can even cause your car to fail an emissions test.

What's a fan?

The fan also helps keep the engine at a constant temperature. Fans are controlled either by a thermostatic switch or by the engine’s computer. They automatically turn on when the temperature of the coolant rises above a certain set point, and turn off when the temperature drops below that point.

How often should I have my cooling system checked?

Have your car cooling system inspected every 12,000 miles or at the very least, every 12 months. Coolant (antifreeze) protects your engine from freezing or overheating, but over time it can degrade. It’s also extremely caustic. If left in the radiator too long, it will begin to corrode the metal and cause a leak because the additives in the coolant have broken down. It’s important to keep your engine clean by removing rust and scale, and preventing it from corrosion, wear and ECD — have your technician flush and fill the coolant per your car’s recommended schedule.

Routine Car Maintenance Checklist

Don’t let the thought of car maintenance scare you. There are a lot of simple things you can do on your own that take just a few minutes. Pick the items that you’re most comfortable with and leave the bigger stuff to a trusted service technician. See our section on car repair questions for more tips on how to find a auto repair shop.

Remember, the small things you do every month, or even 12 months from now, can add years to the life of your car and save loads of stress on you and your wallet.

Many of the following checks can be performed at home, or while you’re at the gas station filling up your tank. Scheduled oil changes are also an excellent time to have many of your car’s systems checked-out.

Air Filter (Engine)

Have the engine’s air filter checked every time you have your oil changed, and replace it if it’s dirty, leaking, torn or oil- or water-soaked. It’s a good idea to replace it annually.

Automatic Transmission Fluid

With the engine running and your car in ‘park’, raise the hood and check the fluid level. If it’s low, add the type of fluid recommended in your owner’s manual. Change the transmission fluid as directed in your owner’s manual, or every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Battery & Cables

While you’re having the engine oil changed, have the battery checked out, too. Make sure the connections are clean and tight, and don’t show any signs of corrosion or leaking. If your car battery is 3 years old or more, have it tested and replace if necessary.

Belts

Replace engine belts when they show any signs of wear, such as cracking, pilling, fraying, or you see contaminants such as gravel, sand or oil. Also replace if the timing belt appears too loose. Timing belts should be replaced according to the schedule in your owner’s manual – usually between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. Remember, your owner’s manual offers general guidelines – if you see or feel any signs of wear, have your engine belts checked and replaced immediately – don’t wait for your recommended service schedule date.

Also keep in mind that some timing belt problems aren’t always visible and could be caused by other related components, such as a failing belt tensioner. Ask your automotive service technician to take a quick look at the entire drive system while he’s checking your engine belts.

Exhaust

When the car is cool, look for leaks, cracks or any other signs of damage or broken supports. (You might suspect an exhaust leak if you hear an unusual ‘throttle’ or muffler sound when the car is running). Exhaust leaks can be very dangerous — take your car to a professional service technician ASAP.

Fuel Filter

Check the engine fuel filter at every oil change. Generally, fuel filters should be changed once a year on cars with carburetors; every 2 years or 24,000 miles on cars with fuel injection.

Hoses

Inspect engine hoses at each oil change and have them replaced if you or your automotive technician sees any cracks, cuts, abrasions or bulges, or if they feel excessively soft or mushy. Even the best coolant hose can fail without warning — and many problems aren't always visible or could be caused by other related engine components. Ask your automotive service technician to take a quick look at your entire car cooling system while he's checking your hoses.

Lights

Make sure all lights are clean and working, including your headlights, tail/brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers.

Oil & Filter

Change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles, or consult your owner’s manual for the recommended oil change schedule for your car and follow it closely. Keep in mind that you may see two recommended oil change schedules, one for normal driving and another for severe driving conditions. If you idle excessively, often drive in stop-and-go traffic or under extreme weather conditions, you should consider the severe driving schedule.

Synthetic oils may extend the number of miles between oil changes, but it’s more important to weigh your manufacturer’s recommendations and your driving conditions against the longer interval. In between oil changes, try checking your oil level when you fill up with gas (and while the engine is off).

Power Steering Fluid

Check the level of your powering steering fluid while checking other fluids under the hood (and when your car is warmed up). If the level is low, add the correct type of fluid. If you’re topping off the level regularly, you might have a leak and should see a certified automotive service technician.

What to check every 6 months or 6,000 miles (In addition to all of the above)

Chassis Lubrication

If you have a new car, chances are it’s lubed-for-life and no action is necessary. If you have an older car, steering and suspension systems may need periodic lubrication. Check your owner’s manual for specifics

Polish

In addition to regular washing (always with car wash products, not other household cleaning products), car polishing at least twice a year to protect and maintain the exterior car finish.

Wiper Blades

The average life expectancy for wiper blades is 6-12 months. Replace them every fall season before severe weather sets in. Replace them any time they are cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering (jumping across your windshield) or whenever visibility is an issue.

Air Filter (Cabin)

Cabin air filters clean the air passengers breathe. Replace annually or per the schedule in your owner’s manual. You may have to replace it more often if you’re in heavily polluted or contaminated areas, or if your heater or air conditioner is running less efficiently.

Antifreeze (Coolant)

Unscrew the radiator cap (only when the car is cool, never hot), and check the level of antifreeze. If it’s low (you can see some of the radiator coils), add a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. On most car cooling systems, coolant should be changed once a year. Consider doing this in the fall, as you ready your car for cooler temperatures.

Spark Plugs

Consult your owner’s manual for the specific change interval for your vehicle. Generally, spark plugs are replaced between 30,000 and 100,000 miles depending on the car and type of spark plug.

Steering & Suspension

These systems control where your car goes and how it drives. Have them checked yearly or sooner if you notice any uneven tire wear, have a bouncy ride, or if your car squeals, shimmies or vibrates. Inspections include shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts, and wheel alignment.

Remember, these car maintenance schedules are merely recommendations. When in doubt, consult your owner’s manual — it’s the ultimate guide to proper care and maintenance on your car. Most importantly, trust your eyes and your gut. If you see or hear any potential problems (or just feel that something’s not right), don’t wait for a scheduled check-up – take action now and save yourself headaches, hassles and bigger expenses down the road.

NAGA MOTOR - Teknologi electric stater pada motor, membuat perangkat kickstater jadi jarang dipakai. Pada motor skutik seperti Yamaha Mio, meski jarang disemplak tetap saja kick starter butuh perawatan.

“Pasalnya bila tidak masuk dalam agenda perawatan, maka bagian tersebut akan timbul karat. Dipastikan bisa tak berguna saat dibutuhkan,” ungkap Yayat Suryana, kelapa mekanik dealer Yamaha Amie Jaya di Depok.

Tak hanya karat yang akan mengganggu fungsi utama kick starter, kotoran dari ruang CVT juga bisa membuat kick starter ogah balik saat disela. Bila hal tersebut sudah terjadi, jangan dibiarkan saja lo. Secara berkala akan membuat gear pinion kick starter cepat aus.

Soalnya saat kick starter ogah balik, maka gear pinion kick starter tidak kembali pada posisi semula. Akibatnya, part tersebut akan bergesekan dengan kick starter one way clutch yang letaknya ada di pully depan.

Nah supaya kick starter tidak mogok kerja, mesti dilakukan perawatan secara teratur. “Bisa dilakukan bersamaan dengan saat pengecekan pada bagian cvt. Perawatan itu sendiri sangat dianjurkan melakukannya tiap setiap 6 bulan sekali,” anjur pria bertubuh langsing ini.

Mau tahu bagaimana cara perawatannya? Paling awal, setelah casing CVT dibuka bersihkan debu yang ada pada dinding perangkat tersebut. Paling efektif, cara membersihkannya dengan menyemprotkan udara dari kompresor.

“Tapi kalau tidak ada, bisa dibersihkan dengan kuas. Tidak usah pakai air atau minyak tanah,”tutur Yayat

Selanjutnya baru membersihkan karat pada as yang ada di kickstater shaft. Caranya buka dulu oil seal yang ada pada bagian tersebut (gbr.1). Kelar dari situ, baru deh semprotkan cairan penetran ke bagian tersebut sroottt... (gbr.2).

Langkah berikutnya memberikan grease secukupnya pada gigi yang adanya di kick starter shaft (gbr.3). “Jangan dikasih oli, tidak tahan lama sehingga pelumasannya kurang maksimal. Selain itu bikin debu yang ada di dalam CVT menempel pada part tersebut. Akibatnya malah bikin cepat macet,” kata Yayat.

Pemberian grease juga dilakukan pada as yang ada pada pinion gear (gbr.4). Dibagian ini sering timbul karat, supaya geraknya tetap lancar saat dipakai maka dibutuhkan pelumas.

Sama dengan gigi yang ada pada kick starter shaft, pemakaian oli malah bikin kotor casing CVT.
