At Tampa's Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, opportunities rock!

The Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel & Casino in Tampa is planning to hire over 400 additional people, as part of it's scheduled expansion this summer.

A job fair will be held nearby on Monday, April 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Hard Rock will be hiring for positions such as chefs, cooks, servers, bartenders, cashiers, Player's Club reps and technicians, as well as in security, maintenance and housekeeping.

Need Help for your Small Business?

SCORE, Service Corps of Retired Executives, offers free services dedicated to the success of small businesses nationwide. As a non-profit community organization consisting of retired business men and women with years of relevant, real-world experience who have actually lived it.

The local Pasco-Hernando Chapter in Florida, a group of about two dozen local volunteers are eager to provide free help to small businesses. Whether trying to start, buy, sell, or expand a small business, they can provide entrepreneur education, mentoring, and funding assistance.

Free weekly seminars are offered on a variety of topics in conjunction with our local libraries. SCORE counselors with hands-on experience and expertise will offer face-to-face help geared toward your situation and needs. Each workshops is 2 hours in length, starting at 5:30 pm and finishing at 7:30 pm.

Unemployment Insurance Claims Changes

Major changes are happening on how some Florida residents in Lee County file for unemployment benefits effective August 1st, as reported by local news. Aimed at cutting costs and getting the jobless back to work, all claims must be filed over the Internet, provide proof of contact with at least 5 potential employers per week, and complete an online skills review test to streamline job search. Residents say they'll need to use the local library or a friend's computer. Unemployed persons unable to make contact with at least five potential employers, can satisfy the new requirement with a visit with a representative from a One-Stop Career Center. Lee County local career centers are seeing a sharp increase in job seekers as well.

Pasco residents may always visit their local Pasco County Library System branch for employment help and computer use. Library staff are more than happy to assist with job searches and unemployment information.

Pasco County Library System (PCLS) is visited eight (8) days a month by the Career Central One-Stop Bus.

Pasco County - Communication Skills Training for Sign Language

Are you interested in learning sign language? If so, the Springhill Career Central office is offering a six week course on sign language from April 27, 2011 to June 1, 2011. Class meets every Wednesday for six weeks from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. According to the Bureau of Statistics, interpreters and translators averaged $43,130.00 a year in 2008. Florida Unemployment - Eligibility and Benefit Calculation

Questions About Unemployment in Florida

Am I eligible for unemployment in Florida?

It depends on a number of factors, such as how you are separated from your job. For instance, an employee who is laid off is usually eligible for unemployment compensation. However, only in limited cirmcumstances, is an employee who quit their job eligible for unemployment compensation. The decision is made when you file your claim. Claim decisions can be appealed. Unemployment is not decided by whether your work is part or full-time. You may be eligible for unemployment compensation even though you had a part-time job.

What minimum and maximum amount of unemployment can I receive on a weekly basis?

$32.00 to $275.00 per week.

How is the amount calculated? Does it run out?

The amount is calculated from the highest quarter in your base period divided by 26. The base period is the first four quarters of the previous five completed quarters prior to filing a claim. For instance, if you filed for unemployment in April of 2011, the base period would be January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010. If your gross amount of pay for your highest quarter was greater than $7,150.00, your weekly benefit would be capped at $275.00 per week. However, if your gross amount of pay was $3,000.00 in your highest quarter than your weekly benefit be $115.36 ($3,000.00 divided by 26 = $115.36). Yes, you can only receive a maximum of 26 weeks worth of unemployment in Florida. However, as of this posting (April 11, 2011), you may be eligible for extended benefits once you have used all 26 weeks within your benefit year. A benefit year is defined as a 1 year period that begins when you file your first claim.

If I get part time or temporary work, can I still file for unemployment?

Yes, as long as the amount you've earned is less than what you are receiving for unemployment for that week and you have not exhausted your benefits. In that case, unemployment will compensate you the difference between your gross pay and your unemployment benefit. For example, if your weekly unemployment benefit is $200.00 and your gross pay from part time or temporary work was $160.00, you could claim the $40.00 difference that week. However, if your unemployment benefit was $200.00 and you earned more than $200.00 - you would not be able to claim unemployment benefits during that week.

Governor Charlie Crist, continuing his commitment to assist Florida’s more than 1.6 million military veterans and strengthen the state’s workforce, announced a new online jobs portal to provide employment services to Florida veterans. Employ Florida Vets, the newest initiative in Florida’s commitment to veterans, helps match servicemen and women to the jobs and training opportunities that suit the skills and experience gained in the military.

“Our courageous veterans are proven, skilled leaders whose integrity and discipline have helped protect the freedoms and opportunities we all enjoy,” said Governor Crist. “Employ Florida Vets is the latest example of our commitment to provide the men and women who defended our nation and now call Florida home with enhanced opportunities to find jobs and access training and other resources that will help them be successful in their civilian careers.”

Protecting Your Social Security Number

According to the Social Security Administration, identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. Once a dishonest person has your social security number they can use it to get personal information about you, apply for credit in your name, or cause you any number of other problems.

Identify thieves often get your personal information by:

Stealing wallets, purses and your mail (bank and credit card statements, pre-approved credit offers, new checks, tax information)
Stealing personal information you provide to an unsecured website, from business or personnel records at work and personal information at home.
Rummaging through your trash, the trash of businesses and public trash receptacles
Posing as someone who needs information about you
Buying personal information from inside sources

So, what is the best way to protect yourself?

DETER identity thieves by safeguarding your information. Keep your card, and any other document that shows your Social Security number on it, in a safe place. If you need to present your card for any reason be sure to return it to a safe place - don't get in the habit of routinely carrying it. Be cautious about sharing your Social Security number...ask why it is needed, how it will be used, and what will happen if you refuse.

DETECT suspicious activity by routinely monitoring your financial accounts and billing statements.

DEFEND against ID theft as soon as you suspect a problem. If someone has misused your Social Security number or other personal information to create credit or other problems for you, there are several things you should do:

PLACE a fraud alert on your credit reports. Fraud alerts can help prevent an identity thief from opening any more accounts in your name. Contact the toll-free fraud number of any of the following three consumer reporting companies to place a fraud alert on your credit report:

TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289; www.transunion.com
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; www.equifax.com
Experian: 1-888-397-3742; www.experian.com

CLOSE the accounts that you know have been opened fraudulently, or tampered with.
CONTACT the Internal Reven ue Service Identity Protection Unit. An identity thief might use your Social Security number to file a tax return in order to receive a refund, or use it to get a job.
FILE an FTC ID Theft Complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can find detailed information here to help you deter, detect and defend against identity theft.
FILE a police report with your local police, or the police in the community where the identity theft took place. The FTC Complaint can be incorporated into the police record for maximum protection.
FILE an online complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) which offers an easy to use reporting mechanism to alert authorities of suspected violations.

Filing a police report, checking your credit reports, notifying creditors, and disputing any unauthorized transactions are some of the steps you must take immediately to restore your good name. Taxes for Students with Summer Jobs

Do Students have to pay taxes on their summer income?

Many students may not realize they have to pay taxes on their summer income. Whether students are babysitting, mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, or other jobs, they must pay taxes on the income they've earned.

The following kinds of income often received by students are generally taxable:

-Pay for services performed
-Self-employment income
-Investment income
-Certain scholarships and fellowships

Some tips on taking preventative measures:

Know your employment classification
Ask your employer about your status and how you're being paid. Be clear about whether your employer considers you an employee or an "independent contract worker."

Tally your tips
Tips are taxable income, so you will have to tell the IRS in 2011 what you made in tips this year. Keep a record of what you earn.

Keep your pay stubs
Without pay stubs, employees have little to help them report their income. Often, the stubs have cumulative information, so the last one will be enough to save.

Know what's withheld
Read your pay stubs carefully, knowing what money you receive isn't the same as knowing what money you earned.

Be aware of tax-filing basics
Many students may be working their first job and they'll have to file taxes perhaps for the first time, so consider these tax basics

Depending on where you work, there are several different ways in which you might need to file your taxes. Be sure to do your homework to find out what tax obligations the IRS wants students who are earning income to know

Funding for Jobs In Education Receives Federal Approval

New Jobs Funding Program Approved

The Department of Education recently received approval by Congress and the President on a new federal program.

The Education Jobs Fund program is a new Federal program that provides $10 billion in assistance to states to save or create education jobs for the 2010-2011 school year.

State Governors must submit an application for funding for their state by September 9th.

Jobs funded under this program include those that provide educational and related services for early childhood, elementary, and secondary education. It will allow hiring back and retaining education job which include school librarians.

Rasmussen College will host a free Career and Networking Fair for residents of the surrounding communities at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club on August 19, 2010 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Approximately 30 companies from a variety of industries will be present and looking to fill positions with qualified candidates. Before the Job Fair:

Find out what businesses will be there and research them.
Develop some questions you'd like to ask employers.
Make sure you have proofread your resume - at least twice. (If you don't have a resume, assistance will be available.)
Be sure your resume contains your updated contact information.
Attire for Hire. First impressions at a job fair are important. How you represent yourself sends an immediate message to employers about how serious you are in your job search.

At the Job Fair:

Take time to talk to employers. Take time to get additional information and make an impression.
Use your research to appear confident and knowledgeable. Do your homework!
Have a firm handshake and maintain eye contact. Showing interest and good manners is important, regardless of the type of job you are looking for. Every employer appreciates someone who is dedicated, conscientious, and attentive.

After the Job Fair:

Follow up with a thank you note. Follow up is an important part of attending a job fair.

Florida's workforce partners are working with Microsoft® and their commitment to strengthen the U.S. economy by providing access to technology training for up to two million people within the next three years. Microsoft's® Elevate America was launched to support that commitment by providing one million vouchers for Microsoft E-Learning courses and select certification exams at no cost to recipients.

Vouchers are available for:

General E-Learning in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
IT Professionals or those interested in entering the IT field
Microsoft® Certification in Office Products

Potential E-Learning candidates should have at least a basic level of computer proficiency and access to an Internet connected computer. To determine if an E-Learning voucher is right for you, please complete a simple self assessment online here.

Request a Voucher
• You may apply for E-learning and Certification exam vouchers until August 21, 2010 or while supplies last.
• Vouchers must be activated by August 21, 2010.
• Once activated, E-Learning recipients have 12 months from the date of activation to access the courses.

New Unemployment Extension - What does it mean for You?

On July 22, 2010 President Barack Obama signed the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2010. According to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation:

"Florida’s Extended Benefit (EB) period ended on June 5, 2010. Qualifying individuals will receive the benefits retroactive to that date if benefits lapsed. The Extended Benefits (EB) program pays up to 20 weeks of additional benefits to individuals who previously exhausted the up-to-79 weeks of regular state and Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits. AWI estimates the Governor’s Executive Order will benefit approximately 250,000 long-term unemployed Floridians.

The new federal law also extends the deadline for establishing eligibility in the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program by approximately six months, retroactive to May 2010, and extends the phase-out date for the program to April 30, 2011. The agency estimates nearly 900,000 EUC claims may be filed as a result."

"Those who believe they may be eligible under the new dates should visit www.floridajobs.org or call (800) 204-2418. Eligible beneficiaries will be able to begin certifying for any weeks to which they may be entitled within the next two weeks, once the agency completes necessary programming. Certifying online at www.floridajobs.org is the quickest and most efficient way to process payments."

Census Taking Job Fairs in Pasco

The U.S. Census Bureau is holding four local job fairs to recruit and train citizens for jobs in collecting data for the 2010 Census in Pasco County. All potential job seekers are asked to bring a passport or a driver's license and a Social Security card. Veterans are asked to bring a copy of their DD-214 form.

West Pasco Job Fairs - Census
