New 28mm Wargame Flags for the English Civil War

This week sees the release of no less than 12 new sheets for Battle Flags already extensive ECW range of 28mm wargame flags.

The Royalist gamer can now add the colours for Sir Gilbert Talbot’s Regiment of Foote to their collection.

Talbot's standards were of a white field, canton of St George and a black Talbot-Hound (the Talbot family badge). Six flags on three sheets provide wargame flags for The Colonel, Lt. Colonel, Major an the 1^st, 2nd, and 3^rd Captains of Talbot’s Regiment of Foote.

The Parliamentarian wargamer is very well served in this weeks release with no less than 18 wargame flags for three Regiments of the London Trayned Bandes, White, Red and Orange. New 28mm Wargame Flags and Waterslide Decals

Between recovering from pneumonia and moving house/office to say that the last couple of months have been interesting would be somewhat of an understatement.

But having now recovered and finally unpacked the last packing box its back to the regular design schedule.

This week not only sees the release of shield transfers for, my favorite knights of the early medieval period, The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, more often called The Teutonic Knights but also two more flag sets for our already extensive range of superb 28mm English Civil War flags.

The Royalist 28mm wargame flag set is for Oxford Trayned Bande of Colonel John Taylor and carries the flags of Captain Robert Deane and Second Captain William Bevan. A rather dramatic set with blood red hearts on a white field, the cross of St George Canton in the upper corner and the Motto Pro Deo, Et Rege (For God and King) emblazoned across the top.

Parliament gets a new 28mm wargame flag set as well in the form of Sir William Norris’s Regiment of Foote. Again another handsome set with its white field and red rose design with both the Major and First Captain represented.

The new 28mm medieval transfer kits are designed to take all the hard work out of painting and collecting a beautiful medieval wargame army. Using battle Flags new genuine waterslide paper the wargamer and collector can now cover a complete 28mm horse barding simply and easily.

A Sample Kit

Just cut out the design from the sheet, soak in water for 30 seconds and then apply to the model as you would any quality waterslide decal. No stiff plastic film to peel away means that unlike other makes of transfer, Battle Flags decals will follow the shape of the model. No more need to worry about painting complicated heraldry basically undercoat the figure white and apply the transfer. The work is done for you and it’s all fully shaded and highlighted giving a real effect of movement.

Viking Shield Transfer and Decal Tutorial

Since their launch last week the all new Viking shield transfers/decals from Battle Flag are proving to be extremely popular with wargamers and modelers alike. While all Battle flags transfer sets come with step instructions it is always good to see photos of how the designer himself uses them.

Battle Flags wargame transfers are true waterslide, no fiddly plastic film to remove and very forgiving and will take quite a bit of abuse and still look great on the model or miniature.

So enough of the chitter chatter onto the Viking Shield Waterslide Transfer and Decal Tutorial.

1. The tools you will require are very basic; a good pair of scissors, a modeling knife ( be careful) a pair of tweezers, cutting mat, a bowl of luke warm water (These are waterslide decals after all) and some kitchen roll. You might want to add some decal solution like Micro Set so you will need a paint brush as well.

2. Firstly having undercoated your shields with white primer (Mega important and the reason for the white fingernails in the photographs. Cut your chosen shield transfer from the sheet. You must cut out each shield separately. I always leave a little of the carrier paper around the actual image. Because of the special qualities of Battle Flags transfer paper you do not have to cut around the transfer exactly. Approximately .5 to 1mm seems to work just fine.

3. The Viking Shield transfer has a centre boss that you can either remove or as I do simply score an asterisk (*) shape into the white circle in the middle of the shield. You do not have to cut all the way through the decal paper. This allows the transfer to slide perfectly over the centre shield boss on the model. The carrier literally melts away as the transfer dries until it is very nearly invisible and I simply paint over it when I paint the centre boss on the shield.

4. Once the decal has been cut from the sheet simply pop it into the water for 20-30 seconds and remove

5. Set the transfer/decal on its backing paper on a piece of kitchen roll to soak up any excess water. And put a drop of water or decal solution onto the shield, this will help the transfer slide around until you are happy with the position.

6. Now the fun bit, simply slide the transfer onto the model shield. Battle Flag transfers are pretty tough so you can move them about without too much risk of damage. I like to use tweezers for delicate positioning.

7. Once you are happy with the position of the waterslide transfer on your Viking shield press it down using some kitchen roll you can be reasonably firm with this to ensure that you have expelled as much water as possible.

8. Now set the shield to one side to dry. I like to leave my models overnight to ensure that the transfer has completely dried and cured.

9. Once dry I always give the transfer a quick coat of matt varnish. This will protect the transfer from damage while you paint the rest of the model

And there you have it museum quality finished Viking Shields. Like Alexander, the Meerkat, off the 'telly says “Simples!”

The new 28mm flag sets from the Battle Flag Thirty Years War series of wargame flags include 4 sets of colours for Sweden and three for the Catholic forces.

The Swedish TYW 28mm gamer can now add three flags of the Blue Mercenary Regiment, six of the flags carried by Leibenstein’s Regiment and three of the known Colours carried by MacKay’s Scots to their armies.

The Catholic TYW series not only sees new flags but adds a completely new Army to the Battle Flag range of wargame flags: The French Regiments of Louis XIII Army. The first three plates of the range allow the 28mm wargamer and collector to choose from no less than nine of the colours carried by the Gardes Francais.

The latest release of 28mm and 25mm wargame and model flags from Battle Flag sees the flags of the volunteers of the Texas War of Independence. Covering the main period of the war 1835-1836 as well as James Long’s earlier expeditions in 1821 the plates include the flags carried at the main battles of the Texas Revolution and of course that flown at the Alamo.

Battle Flag’s flags of the Texan War of Independence have been properly researched. The Latin stanzas are correct and I have avoided fictitious flags like the supposed flag of Lorenzo de Zavala.

The Blue Flag with the Lone Star with the name of Texas surrounding it, accredited as the de Zavala flag, was in fact first published in a book entitled "The Romantic Flags of Texas" by Mamie Wynne Cox in 1931. Cox conveniently ignored the journal entries that discuss the addition of a rainbow and stars to de Zavala's unknown design.

Wargame Flags of Wallenstein's Imperial Army of The Thirty Years War

With this month’s Lutzen article, in Wargames Illustrated featuring flags and banners by Battle Flag, I thought it about time to increase the Thirty Years War range of wargame flags to encompass more of the spectacular flags carried by the Armies of the period.

With help from the Wargames illustrated back catalogue I was able to find details on literally hundreds of flags and banners from the Thirty Years War.

Having long been an admirer of Wallenstein his was the first army tackled. I have designed no less than thirty new TYW wargame flags released on 10 plates, printed as always with archival quality inks on quality papers, for Wallenstein's Imperial Army. I have also added a set of Virgin and Child Banners to the Bayern & Liga forces and , not to be out done, another fine set for the Swedish.

I thought that you might enjoy some images of a wonderful vignette that has just been completed by Angel Aparicio of Oniria’s War Paint for Gringo 40’s.

It shows the men of the 11th Toluca Regiment rallying around their Regimental standard making ready to defend against some unseen enemy.

The standard is from Battle Flag’ 40mm battle damaged range, created for Gringo 40’s wonderful new range of military miniatures and is available from both Battle Flag and Gringo 40’s.

As this is my first posting of 2011 I would like to start by wishing all Battle Flag customers a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

The latest set of model flags from Battle Flag for the Mexican American War covers 10 Regiments of U.S. Volunteer Infantry.

The 10 States represented are; California, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennesse, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersy and Virginia.

Following in the same style as the two previous sets (Mexican Infantry and U.S Regular Infantry) the plate of flags carries an image of General Zachary Taylor and a facsimile of his signature.

Again this set has been given the official stamp of approval from First Corps Miniatures and here at Battle Flag we are proud to be the authorized designer of flags for their excellent range of 28mm miniatures.

A set of Generic 28 star U.S National Colours are also available, with three flags per set, for you boys that like to use two flags with your Regiments.

The first flags in the Gringo 40’s series from Battle Flag give the collector the choice of 10 Mexican Regiments including the heroic San Blas and the magnificent looking Grenadiers of the Supreme Powers.

Each new official wargame flag sheet from Battle Flag carries the distinctive new Gringo 40’s logo with its Spy Company Lancer.

The Mexican Regimental flags and standards included in the first release are;

Morelos (1^st Perm.), Aldama (5^th Perm.), Jimenez (6^th), 2^nd Movil, Granaderos de la Guardia de los Supremos Podres, Guardia Nacional Batallon Libres de Puebla, Augascalintes, Batallon Fijo de Mexico and the Batallon Fijo de California.

Next weeks release of official Gringo 40's wargame flags from Battle Flag will see the U.S. Regulars followed the week after by the U.S. Volunteers.

This month at Battle Flag has definitely developed a Renaissance theme.

Having already released 6 wargame flags sets for The Polish Winged Hussars this week sees the release of the first16 flags from the Landsknecht! range of Holy Roman Empire Renaissance battle flags and standards.

The Landsknecht! range is the first series from Battle Flag that allows the Wargamer to purchase his flags individually. If it proves popular then there is every likelihood that it will be made available across the range.

Polish Pennons, Pennants and Banners for The Winged Hussars of King Sigismund III

This week sees the release of no less than 6 sets of pennons, pennants and banners for wargamers and collectors of the visually striking Polish Winged Hussars.

The first five of the sets include a regimental banner and 10 regimental pennons. The sixth set represents the Royal Company of Courtiers and comes with the Royal Banner of King Sigismund III and 10 individual pennons of the Hussars of the Court.

Available in 28mm and 15mm now with all other scales available upon request.
