Every now and then, business goes through a dry spell, and I find myself worrying about money. There was a season when things were so quiet that I honestly didn’t know how to get back on track.

Then an order came in for a birthday cake. When the customer paid, they gave me an extra R100. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it meant the world to me. It felt like God quietly saying, “I see you. I haven’t forgotten you.”

That’s not the only time it has happened. Whenever I start to worry, something comes in: another cake order, or provision from somewhere unexpected. These moments remind me that God is able to help me, and my part is simply to trust Him.

Isaiah 43:1

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are Mine.”

Why we can trust Him

He knows you by name and is familiar with every detail of your life.
You don’t have to live in fear. Receive His comfort and courage instead.
He sees you and your situation, and He will help you.

Sometimes God’s help doesn’t arrive in a big, dramatic way. Sometimes it looks like a birthday cake and a little extra. But small blessings are still blessings, and they remind us that He is paying attention.

A Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me by name and making me Yours. Thank You for the personal care and attention You give to my situation. Help me to rest in the security and purpose that come from knowing I am Your treasured possession. Amen.

God Will Rescue You: A Devotion on 2 Timothy 4:18

2 Timothy 4:18

Paul wrote these words from a prison cell. He had been abandoned by friends, and he knew his time was short. Yet he did not write with fear. He wrote with a quiet certainty: the Lord will rescue me.

Maybe you’re carrying something heavy this morning. A worry you can’t put down. A situation you can’t fix. A weariness that sleep hasn’t touched. Take a breath and let this truth settle over you: God has not lost sight of you.

He is not surprised by what you’re facing. He is not distant from it. The One who holds everything in His hands is the same One who holds you, and no attack, no sorrow, and no season of difficulty can reach you without first passing through His loving care.

And this is not the end of your story. Whatever is pressing on you today is real, but it is not final. God is leading you toward something far greater than this moment: a home with Him, a future secured by His promise, a joy that no struggle can take away.

So you can loosen your grip. You don’t have to carry it all. Rest in the One who carries you.

Pause and Listen

Before you pray, be still for a moment. Ask the Holy Spirit: “What do You want me to hand over to You today?” Then wait quietly. Let Him bring to mind what you’ve been holding too tightly.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are my rescuer and my protector. You see everything I’m facing, and You are not afraid of any of it. Today I place my burdens in Your hands. Help me to trust You, even when I can’t see the way forward. Hold me close, Holy Spirit, and remind me that my future is safe with You. You have never left me, and You never will. Proverbs 10:4 "Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth."
Reflection
I've been sitting with this thought lately, turning it over quietly in my heart.
Every one of us has been given work to do. The mother who never leaves her home, pouring herself into small hands and sticky faces. The student burning midnight oil over textbooks. The CEO carrying the weight of hundreds of livelihoods. The single parent who rises before dawn, sustained by sheer will and a whole lot of grace. The woman who keeps a household running like a quiet river, steady, unceasing, mostly unseen. The skilled professional. The one whose body limits what their spirit longs to do. The babysitter, the housekeeper, the faithful volunteer ladling soup at the rescue mission on a cold Tuesday night. Every single one of us, we are called to work.
And here is what I need to remember, what I want to press deep into my bones: it does not matter whether my work is noticed by the world around me or only by God. My work matters. It matters deeply.
When I do my work well, truly well, something stirs in me. A quiet fullness. A sense of worth that doesn't need anyone else's applause to survive. But oh, how heavy the days feel when my work seems to bear no fruit, when effort pours out and nothing blooms. The frustration settles into me like rain that won't stop. The emptiness has a weight all its own.
I think about the woman in Proverbs 31 and I catch my breath. She is tireless. She buys land, plants vineyards, sews with her own hands, sells what she has made, and still, still, she rises while the house is dark. She knows what she carries has value. She burns with strength, vision, and purpose. I read about her and part of me wants to quietly close the Bible. I cannot be her.
And yet.
God placed her there not to shame us, but to show us. He wants us to experience that kind of life; the deep satisfaction of work done with wholehearted devotion. But I don't believe it comes easily, and I don't believe it comes without prayer.
Apply
Scripture tells us that "the laborer is worthy of his wages" (1 Timothy 5:18). I believe that. I believe we are meant to be rewarded, though sometimes the reward lives inside the work itself, quiet and hidden like a seed underground. No one pays me to keep my home. No one writes me a cheque for serving soup or kneeling down to teach a child to tie their laces. But "the labour of the righteous leads to life." That is its own kind of payment.
Prayer
Dear Lord, these days have grown heavy. I find myself losing my footing, losing my focus, wondering which way to turn. I need You to show me clearly. What is the work You have set before me? If I have drifted from it, draw me back. If there is something more You are asking of me, something beyond what I am already doing, please open my eyes to it.
Whatever You have called me to, now and in the days ahead, give me the strength and the energy to see it through. Let me find deep fulfilment even in the hard parts, even in the unglamorous and the unseen. May every task, whether great or small, be done as an offering to You. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Today's Fragrance
Where I am lacking, grow me. Where I am weak, strengthen me. Let me do my work, all of it, to the fullest of the abilities You have placed within me. Open the doors I am meant to walk through, and gently close the ones that are not mine to enter.

Lord, prepare me to be a true worshiper
Psalm 147:1
"Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful."
Reflection
For a long time, genuine worship has been a real struggle for me. I have grown so accustomed to simply listening to music rather than actively engaging in praise that breaking the habit has proven difficult. Unless a song truly resonates deep within me, I find my attention drifting away almost without realising it.
So, when it comes to praise and worship, I have to deliberately lean in and press through. I am not entirely sure what caused me to withdraw in this area, but I know that I have. Even now, I am making a conscious effort to worship and praise the LORD wholeheartedly because I know that is exactly what God desires from me.
God calls me to sing my praises to Him: "Serve the LORD with gladness; come before His presence with singing." Psalm 100:2
God calls me to lift my hands to Him: "Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the LORD." Psalm 134:2
God calls me to speak my praise to Him: "By Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name." Hebrews 13:15
Apply Today
Praise the LORD God with dancing and with instruments: "Let them praise His name with the dance; let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp." Psalm 149:3
Prayer
Dear LORD, there is no greater joy for me than to worship You. I come into Your presence with a thankful heart and bow before You today. I exalt Your name, for You are great and worthy of all praise. Thank You that "You have put gladness in my heart" (Psalm 4:7). All honour and majesty, strength and glory, holiness and righteousness belong to You, O LORD. In the holy name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Today's Fragrance: Give your whole self to worshipping and praising the LORD God.

A true story about stubbornness, grace, and the doors God keeps opening anyway

There is a particular kind of foolishness that lives in all of us. The kind that wears the disguise of wisdom right up until the moment it doesn't. I know this because I have lived it, and I am not too proud to say so anymore. Although, once upon a time, I very much was.

A few years ago, a manager went out of their way to arrange a good position for me. It was a gift, really someone seeing my worth and making room for me. But then another opportunity appeared on the horizon, closer to home, and with a salary that made the first offer seem modest by comparison. I told myself it was practical. Sensible. Smart.

I took the new job.

Within a month, I was let go. I had done my work exactly as I was asked. But favour, as anyone who has navigated an office knows, is not always about competence. The women there simply did not like me, and that was that. I walked out of those doors and straight into the silence of unemployment while the first company, the one I had turned down, carried quietly on without me.

"Do not let your pride step into your provision."

But God and isn't that always where the real story begins was not finished with me there. Much later, that first company came back. They approached me. They offered me a position. Not because I had earned a second chance through some great act of humility, but because grace simply does not keep the score, we expect it to.

This time, I worked hard and I worked well. I built a filing system that became something quietly respected methodical, thorough, the kind of thing that only reveals its value when someone comes looking. And when an audit arrived, every document was in its place. Every record matched. A perfect audit, born out of ordinary faithfulness.

Looking back, I can see myself clearly now stubborn, self-directed, certain I knew the better path. I have always been that way, and I have always borne the consequences of it. But this is what I wish I had done differently: I wish I had picked up the phone. After losing that second job, I wish I had swallowed the embarrassment, called the first company, and simply asked is there still a place for me?

I did not do that. Pride had moved in before I could, and pride made itself very comfortable.
Do I regret the decisions I made? Not deeply. They were mine, and they made sense to me at the time. I have learned to make peace with the woman who made them. But if there is anything I want to pass on, it is this:

Do not let your pride step into your provision.

The door God opens may not be the most glamorous one. The salary may not impress anyone. The commute may not be convenient. But if someone has seen fit to make a way for you. I have found that Someone always does, do not let shame or stubbornness talk you out of walking through it.

Life is short. Time moves faster than we admit. And God, in His quiet faithfulness, keeps making ways for those who are willing to stop making excuses long enough to notice.

I am grateful for every door, the ones that closed in my face and the ones that opened again. Both had something to teach me. Both were part of the story.

Embrace your life. Live it as fully and as honestly as you can. And when grace comes knocking a second time, let it in.

Dear Father God,
How do I begin to thank You for the gift of Your Word? It is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105) and oh, how I need that light. Without it, I stumble. Without it, my soul grows hollow and hungry, grasping at things that cannot satisfy. Your Word is the bread I cannot live without. The water my spirit craves in the dry and weary places.
So, I come to You today with open hands and an open heart.
Open my eyes, Lord. Not just to read the words on the page, but to see to truly comprehend the depths hidden there. The treasures buried beneath the surface, waiting for the one who seeks with their whole heart. Give me understanding greater than I have ever known. Make me teachable. Make me willing. Quiet the pride in me that thinks it already knows. Replace it with the hunger of a student who has so much yet to learn.
I want Your instruction. I desire it.
Help me to be diligent. Father, faithfully placing Your Word inside my soul each and every day. Not as a ritual, but as a lifeline. Show me the places where I am wasting time. The distractions I reach for before I reach for You. Give me the discipline to choose Your Word first. Give me the grace to remember it. To hide it deep within my heart so it cannot be taken from me. Etch it into my mind. Weave it into the fabric of who I am. Let it change me, slowly and surely, the way water shapes stone.
Because Lord, I don't want to be someone who merely hears Your Word and walks away unchanged. I want to be a doer, someone whose life looks different because of what You have spoken. Show me when I am drifting from obedience. Correct me gently. Redirect me firmly. Help me to apply my heart to Your instruction and my ears to Your words of knowledge (Proverbs 23:12), even when what You ask is hard, even when it costs me something.
May Your Word correct my attitude when I have wandered from truth. May it remind me of my purpose here on this earth. Not comfort, not ease, but You. May it cleanse the hidden corners of my heart and restore hope where discouragement has tried to take root. May it stretch my faith and remind me of who You are. How vast, how faithful, how tenderly and fiercely You love me. May it bring me back, again and again, to the peace of knowing that my life is held in Your hands. You will supply every need according to Your riches and Your grace.
Thank You, Lord, that when I look into Your Word, I find You. Not just principles. Not just poetry. You. Living. Present. Speaking.
Give me ears to hear Your voice every time I read. (Mark 4:23) Don't let me miss You. Don't let me grow so familiar with the words that I stop listening for the Voice behind them. When I wander from the path You have laid before me. My life grows empty and I feel it, that ache of being far from where I belong. Draw me back. Perfect me. Fill me. Guide every step.
I pray all of this in the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
"For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

Psalm 119:133
“Direct my steps by Your word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me.”

Reflection
When I first felt the stirring to write my devotional, Crushed but Fragrant, I did not fully understand the weight of those words. I thought perhaps it was simply a title, something meaningful, yet distant. But now… I see it differently.

Now I understand that each day carries its own testing. From the moment I open my eyes, life begins to press in demands, decisions, weariness, and the quiet battles no one else sees. And in those moments, I realise just how much I need the Lord to guide my every step.

So today, I choose not to walk alone.

I take His Word as my lamp and my direction. I hold onto Psalm 119:133, asking Him to order my steps, to keep me steady, and to guard my heart from anything that seeks to take hold where it does not belong.

I find myself longing for wisdom real wisdom, the kind that steadies the soul. And He reminds me in Psalm 19:7 that His Word is perfect, restoring what feels worn and making even the simple wise.
Do you long for that too? I know I do. I desire a life that is fruitful, a life that succeeds not in the world’s way, but in His. And so, I return again to Joshua 1:8, where I am called to keep His Word close, to speak it, to meditate on it, to live it… day and night.

I want to live purely before Him. And when I fall short, I remember His gentle instruction in Psalm 119:9 that my way is cleansed as I take heed to His Word. More than anything, I want to obey Him. Not out of duty, but out of love. So, I pray as the psalmist did in Psalm 119:33–35: “Teach me, O Lord… give me understanding… make me walk in Your ways.” Because deep within, I know, His path is the one my heart delights in. These are the anchor scriptures I cling to in my daily walk. What are yours?

Apply Today
Choose His Word with joy. Let it lift your heart and open your eyes. Psalm 19:8 reminds us that His commands are not heavy, they bring light, clarity, and deep joy.

Prayer
Dear Father God, Today I come before You with a humble heart. I recognise how much I need You, more than I often admit. I am simple, Lord, yet You see me, and You call me Yours. By faith, I declare that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. You have made a way for me, even when I cannot see it. Lord, I am tired. Some days feel heavy, as though I am surrounded on every side. But today, I choose to surrender again. I place my life, my burdens, and my fears into Your hands. Forgive me for the moments where I have not trusted You fully. Teach me to rest in Your truth and to follow where You lead. Here I am, Lord. In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Today’s Fragrance: God offers a peace this world cannot give, but it is found first in His Word. “Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble.”
Psalm 119:165

There is a holy rhythm to the close of day; one I have come to cherish like a well-worn prayer.

The moment I cross the threshold of home, my feet carry me to the kitchen without thought, without deliberation. It is instinct. It is love made visible. I lose myself in the quiet ceremony of preparing the evening meal. The soft rhythm of chopping, the warmth rising from the stove, the setting of the table like an altar prepared with intention. I wash the dishes I have dirtied, restoring order, completing the circle. Only then do I permit myself to rest.

I settle into the living room, the couch receiving me like an old friend. I reach for the remote and search for something with edges; murder, intrigue, the shadowed world of spies. I am drawn to suspense the way a moth is drawn to candlelight. And as I wait for the sound of my husband's key in the door, somewhere between one heartbeat and the next, my eyes grow heavy... and I drift. A stolen nap. A small mercy.

His arrival stirs me gently back to the world.

We talk. The way only two people who truly know each other can talk; easily, unhurriedly. Then we sit together at the table and share the meal I made with my hands, and something in that simple act feels like communion. Afterward, side by side at the sink, we wash away the remnants of the day together, and then; back to the couch, a series, a movie, the comfortable quiet of two souls at ease.

It may appear ordinary to the world. But I have learned that ordinary is where life actually lives.
And when the evening asks something more of me, when my hands crave creation. I reach for my crochet hook. I craft delicate doilies, tiny baby garments sewn with silent prayers for little ones not yet known to me, snuggle bunnies destined for small arms that need comfort. And my beloved granny square blanket grows, square by patient square, a patchwork testimony to the beauty of slow, faithful work.
At last, when the house is still and the world has hushed itself to sleep, I bow my head and open my heart.

Thank You.

Two words. The truest prayer. And then I close my eyes, held by grace, and let the night carry me home.

Based on Jeremiah 31:14
“My dearest soul,” the Lord seems to whisper, “I will fill you yes, abundantly so with My goodness.”

There are moments in life when one feels rather like an empty teacup; useful, perhaps, but quite in need of filling. Yet here is the delightful truth: we are not called to live half-filled, worn thin, or merely managing. No indeed. We are invited into a life brimming over with the rich, undeserved grace of God.

The Lord, in His tender kindness, is not content to leave hearts weary and spirits dull. He delights in restoring joy, proper, deep-rooted joy and bringing a sense of fulfilment that no earthly striving could ever accomplish. What a comfort to know that He specialises in restoration, even when we feel a touch beyond repair.

And this promise? It is not reserved for a select few with perfect composure or unwavering strength. It is for all His children including you, dear heart. His goodness is not measured out sparingly. It arrives with generosity: in blessings that surprise, favour that opens doors, and provision that meets needs just when it is most required.

So today, instead of striving and stretching yourself thin, you may simply receive. Receive His goodness. Receive His grace. Allow your soul to be satisfied; not with fleeting things, but with Him.

Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You that You do not offer me a life of lack, but a life filled with Your goodness. Please restore my joy where it has faded and gently satisfy the deep places of my soul with Your grace and provision. Help me to walk each day aware of Your blessings, trusting in Your favour, and resting in Your abundant love. In Jesus Christ name Amen.

By Yvette van Niekerk
I'll be honest with you, I am not what you would call a social media person. Not in the way the world seems to expect these days, where feeds are scrolled like scripture and notifications arrive like urgent telegrams. No, my relationship with social media is something quieter, something more like wandering through a garden at my own pace rather than rushing through a crowded marketplace.
Let me take you on a little tour of my digital world.
Facebook is where I go to simply be. Not to perform, not to debate, not to announce. Just to look and to appreciate. I find myself drawn to the most beautiful, unhurried corners of it: the crochet patterns that make my fingers itch with creative longing. The flower arrangements that remind me that there is still so much loveliness in this world if you know where to look. And then, of course, there are the faces of family, a photo here, a post there, small windows into lives I love. I don't comment on everything. I don't need to. Sometimes witnessing is enough. Facebook, for me, is a quiet gallery, and I am a grateful visitor.
LinkedIn serves an entirely different purpose. This is where I step into my professional shoes: focused, intentional, purposeful. I engage with ideas that sharpen my thinking and challenge my perspective. I like and repost the content that resonates, not out of habit, but because something in it is worth passing on. LinkedIn is the boardroom to Facebook's living room, and I try to show up in each space accordingly.
Then there is YouTube, and oh, what a gift it has been to my spirit. This is where I sit at the feet of teachers I deeply respect, Pastor Robert Morris, Vlad, and others whose words carry the kind of weight that lingers long after the screen goes dark. There is something sacred about being able to pause, rewind, and truly hear a message again. YouTube has become, for me, less of an entertainment platform and more of a sanctuary. A place to be fed.
TikTok now there is the unexpected delight. I did not anticipate loving it, and yet here I am, drawn in by the music and the dancing. There is a joy in it that is almost childlike, a reminder that not everything needs to be serious or significant. Sometimes you just need to watch someone move to a song that makes your heart lift, and smile, and feel a little lighter than you did before.
But here is what I want you to understand about all of it: I do not binge. I do not scroll out of anxiety or compulsion. I look when I feel like it, and I think there is a quiet wisdom in that boundary, even if it is one I arrived at more by nature than by intention.
And sometimes, often, honestly life is simply too full. Too rich with the real and the present and the immediate. The blog goes unwritten. The feed goes unchecked. And somehow, the world keeps turning just fine.
Maybe that is the most honest thing I can tell you about my social media life: it fits around my living, not the other way around. And for now, that feels exactly right.
What about you? How does social media fit into your life?

“I will give you every place where you set your foot.” — Book of Joshua 1:3 (NIV)
Now, if one were to sit down with a cup of tea and thoughtfully wander through the pages of the Book of Job, one might quickly discover that transformation is rarely a tidy affair. In fact, it tends to involve a fair bit of fire.
Gold, you see, does not simply wake up one morning and decide to sparkle. It must endure heat, just the right amount, for just the right length of time. Carefully measured by the Refiner Himself. Attempt to rush such a process, and instead of something precious, you may very well end up with something far less remarkable… tin, perhaps, which no one ever writes poems about.
And then comes the Lord’s promise to Joshua, spoken with quiet authority: “I will give you every place where you set your foot.” Which, when one thinks about it, is rather like saying, “My dear child, I have already prepared the promise, but you must still do the walking.”
It is not always grand strides and triumphant marches. More often, it looks like putting one foot in front of the other while facing the usual assortment of unwelcome companions. Fatigue that lingers, doubt that whispers, discouragement that sighs heavily, and criticism that arrives quite uninvited.
Yet the instruction remains delightfully simple, even if not particularly easy: Keep walking.
There is, woven throughout Scripture, a most comforting pattern. In those moments when you truly cannot go on, God steps in and does what only He can do. And in the many ordinary moments in between, He gently strengthens you, steadies your steps, and reminds you: “Walk it out, My child. I am with you.”
Apply Today
When complacency, fatigue, doubt, criticism, or discouragement attempt to settle in like unwanted houseguests, do not entertain them. Simply rise, perhaps not with great enthusiasm, but with quiet determination, and take the next step. Because that is how promises are reached. Step by step. With Him.
Prayer
Dear Father God, we so often imagine that life ought to unfold smoothly, like a calm and quiet sea. And yet, today reminded me that storms can rise without warning, sometimes not around me, but within me. Lord, I felt the weight of uncertainty, fatigue, discouragement, and worry pressing heavily on my heart. And so, I bring all of it to You, just as I am. Please forgive me where I have allowed these feelings to overwhelm my faith. Holy Spirit, help me to walk in step with You, steady, trusting, and unafraid. Strengthen me for each step, even when it feels small. Thank You that when I cannot, You can. And when I must walk, You Walk beside me. In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Fragrance for Today: Keep walking. And remember; when you truly need Him, God steps in and does what you cannot. The rest of the time, He lovingly gives you strength for the journey.

Well, good morning, friends.

It’s one of those days where the sun is putting on a lovely show, but the temperature didn’t get the memo about warmth. Brisk. Crisp. The kind of air that wakes you right up whether you like it or not. And honestly? I’m here for it.

Because in ten days, TEN DAYS, can you believe it? I land in Adelaide, Australia.

Let me tell you, my heart is doing a happy dance that would embarrass any professional dancer. I’ll see my daughter. My son-in-law. My two granddaughters. Three whole months of hugs, laughter, probably some chaos, and definitely too much coffee. The joy of knowing I’ll be with them? Unmatched.

Except for this one thing.

This morning, I was rummaging around in my memory (and my jewellery box) and I found a bracelet my husband gave me ten years ago. Not diamonds. Not gold that would impress a king. Just a simple reminder: God has called me by my name.

Stop right there. Read that again.

Called. By. My. Name.

Not “hey you.” Not “that one over there.” Not “eh, she’ll do.”

My name.

And then He adds, just in case I’m feeling wobbly: You are Mine.

Not you’re mine if you behave. Not you’re mine until you mess up. Just… Mine.

That’s the kind of belonging that makes a person sit up straight. That’s the kind of love that laughs in the face of fear. Because fear? Fear wants me to believe I’m forgotten. Fear whispers that I’m on my own. But the Lord says, “I redeemed you. I know your name. And I’m actively, personally, tenderly involved in your life.”

I don’t have to be afraid. Not of travel hiccups. Not of the future. Not of that one thing you’re worrying about right now as you read this. He’s delivered me before. He’ll do it again.

Prayer
Lord, thank You. Thank You that I belong to You, not as a distant fan, but as Your own. Thank You that You know my name and still choose me. Help me not to live in fear, but to rest in Your ridiculous, relentless love.

And Lord? I’m bringing my mom to You today. Her trip to Australia. Because without flights, she’s not going anywhere, and we both know that’s a problem only You can solve. I’m standing in the gap yes, right here, coffee in hand, asking for an open door. Work on hearts. Move the right people. Make a way where there seems to be no way. We’ve come so far. Now let that door swing wide open.

We trust You. We thank You. Your will be done here, there, and all the way to Australia.

In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

Ecclesiastes 7:29 — "This only have I found: God made mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes."
Ecclesiastes 7:23–26
I have read the words of Solomon more times than I can count, and every time I arrive at this passage, I slow down. Not because it is comfortable, it isn't, but because it is honest in the way that only hard-won wisdom can be.
"I am determined to be wise — but this was beyond me."
Solomon. The wisest man who ever lived. And even he threw his hands up.
There is something quietly liberating about that.
I have been sitting with a particular kind of pain lately. The kind that does not announce itself loudly at the door but slips in through the cracks. Through a sly look, a whispered word, a betrayal you almost missed but your spirit caught before your mind did. You know the feeling. That slow burn that starts somewhere behind your ribs and works its way upward until your jaw is tight and your thoughts are running laps at two in the morning.
I wanted to be wise about it. I genuinely did.
But wisdom, as Solomon so bluntly puts it, has a way of staying just out of reach when you need it most.
So here is what I did instead of being wise. I held on. I rehearsed the offence. I built a very thorough and quite convincing case for why my anger was completely justified, and honestly, parts of it were. Being lied to is real. Being stolen from is real. Being smiled at by someone whose hands are already reaching for what is yours, that is real, and it is painful, and you are allowed to name it.
But I have learned, the hard way and not for the first time, that justified anger and free are not the same address.
There came a day, today, as it happens, when I finally said what I should have said much sooner.
Lord, You be the judge between us. Not me.
It is not a dramatic prayer. It does not feel triumphant when you say it. In fact, if I am honest, it felt a little like defeat at first. Like I was handing over a case I had spent weeks preparing. But that is exactly what it was. And exactly what it needed to be.
I set them free. Not because what they did was acceptable. Not because it did not hurt. But because carrying it any further was beginning to cost me something I cannot afford to lose. My peace, my clarity, and the woman God is still in the process of making me.
I will not pretend the surrender was graceful.
Letting go goes against every fibre of my being. Turning away when everything in me wants to turn back and say one more true and perfectly worded thing. That is genuinely one of the hardest disciplines I know. Staying quiet when I have something to say feels, some days, like a small death.
But I am learning, slowly, imperfectly, with considerable backsliding. That my voice was never meant to be a weapon. And my silence, when it is chosen rather than forced, can be an act of extraordinary strength.
Here is the part I nearly left out, because it is the least flattering.
In all my righteous indignation, in all my very reasonable anger, I caught a glimpse of something in myself that stopped me cold.
Pride.
Not the quiet, dignified kind. The bristling, how dare they, do they know who I am kind. The kind Solomon warned about. The kind that dresses itself up as standards and self-respect and discernment, and is sometimes all of those things, and sometimes is just pride wearing a good coat.
I have cursed them in my heart. And they have cursed me. And somewhere in the middle of all that mutual cursing, I looked up and realised I was not standing quite as far above this situation as I thought I was.
So, I did the only honest thing left to do.
I fell flat on my face.
Forgive me, Lord. For the pride. For the self-righteousness. For holding onto unforgiveness like it was keeping me safe when really it was just keeping me stuck. I have sinned, against You, and against the person You are still trying to make me. I know it. You know it. Let us not pretend otherwise.
And now, from this somewhat undignified position on the floor, I am stretching forward.
Not because I have it together. Not because the anger is entirely gone or the wound is fully healed. But because I believe, I choose to believe, that my life has meaning beyond this moment. That I am not defined by what was done to me, or even by how poorly I handled it on my worst days. That the God who made me upright has not given up on the project.
Holy Spirit, walk with me today. Help me to move in step with You rather than in step with my feelings. Set me free from my own stumbling blocks, the ones on the inside, the ones I built myself. And where I have been a snare to my own peace, loosen those chains too.
May Your will be done in their lives. And in mine. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Luke 18:1
“Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”

Reflection
There are days when prayer feels like tossing words into the wind, hoping they’ll land somewhere near heaven. Yet today, I’m reminded that prayer isn’t wishful thinking. It’s faith in action. It’s believing that God not only hears but intervenes, even when circumstances seem stubbornly unmoved.
So, I bring before Him the concerns weighing on my heart, my mom’s visa that remains pending, the uncertainty that lingers. And yet, I choose trust. I choose to believe His will is at work in both our lives. Hope, after all, is not a fragile thing. It’s a promise rooted in His Word. And with that promise, I stand firm, refusing to lose heart, pressing on in prayer, and clinging to the assurance that He is faithful.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me the art of persistence in prayer. When discouragement whispers, remind me that You are near. I lay my concerns before You, trusting that Your hand is at work. Today, I lift each name on my prayer list to Your throne, pleading the blood of Jesus over us all. Fill me with hope, strengthen my faith, and keep me pressing forward. In Your holy and mighty name, Amen.

"He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others." 2 Corinthians 1:4

Reflection

Some days just feel… off. You start with good intentions, but somewhere along the way, your focus slips, your energy dips, and that sense of “I’ve got this” quietly disappears. You try to push through, but instead, you feel scattered, tired, and a little discouraged.

Here’s the truth we often forget: You were never meant to carry everything on your own.
God doesn’t wait for things to fall apart before He steps in. He meets you right in the middle of your messy, unproductive, “I’ve lost my mojo” kind of days.

Nothing is too small.
Not your tiredness.
Not your frustration.
Not even that quiet feeling that you’re not quite yourself.
He sees it all and He cares.

God’s comfort isn’t reserved for big crises. It’s available in the ordinary moments too. In the middle of a busy day. In the pause between tasks. In the sigh you didn’t even realise you let out.
And when He comforts you, it’s never just for you.

It flows through you.

Because the moment you’ve felt His peace steady your heart, you’re able to notice someone else who needs the same. A kind word. A message. A moment of understanding.

That’s how His comfort multiplies.

Prayer
Lord, Today I feel a little scattered, a little tired, and not quite like myself. But I know You are still near. Please meet me in this moment and settle my heart. Quiet the noise, restore my focus, and remind me that I don’t have to do everything in my own strength. Fill me with Your peace. The kind that doesn’t depend on how productive or put-together I feel. And once You’ve strengthened me, help me to notice someone else who needs encouragement today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Fragrance: You don’t have to have it all together to receive God’s comfort.
And once you receive it, you’ll have more than enough to give.

"I want to be clear from the outset: this is not about a people, a culture, or a nation. It is about a specific moment in time, and a personal threshold for risk."

If someone asked me which place in the world I would hesitate most to visit. My honest answer would be the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. I say "regions" deliberately, because this is not a verdict on a country of nearly 100 million people. A land of extraordinary beauty, ancient rivers, rare wildlife, and deep, layered culture. It is a response to a reality that even Congolese citizens themselves have had to live with, flee from, or fight against for decades.

Living in South Africa shapes how I see this. I am not someone sheltered from complexity or violence. I understand that crime, inequality, and danger do not define a whole country. I live in one where outsiders often make that same lazy mistake. I know what it feels like when your home is reduced to its worst headlines.

So, when I speak about the DRC, I try to hold two truths at once. The first is that parts of this country. Particularly in the east, have been caught in one of the world's longest-running humanitarian crises. Armed conflict, displacement, and instability have cost millions of lives. That is not perception. That is documented, lived reality. For a solo traveller, the safety calculus is simply too uncertain.

The second truth is that Kinshasa pulses with music, art, and energy. The Congo River is one of the most spectacular waterways on earth. The Virunga mountains shelter mountain gorillas found nowhere else. The Congolese people have shown a resilience that humbles me. None of that disappears because conflict exists in another part of the same vast country.

My hesitation is not a dismissal. It is an acknowledgement that right now, for me, visiting certain parts of that country would be a risk I am not equipped or positioned to take responsibly. I hope that changes. I hope the DRC gets the stability its people deserve, not so tourists like me can visit, but so that their own citizens can move freely through their extraordinary home without fear.

"Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death. The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth." Proverbs 10:2–10
Reflection
The Turning Point: I used to think that by this stage of my life. The path was already set in stone. I looked at the mirror and saw the silver hair and the lines of age. I felt as though I was simply watching the clock run out on my dreams. I’ve spent years in the "midlife crisis." Wrestling with the ghosts of regrets, careers that didn't flourish, relationships that felt the strain of time. The nagging fear of being "less than" in a world that prises youth and worldly success.
But then I saw Zacchaeus.
He was a man who had spent his life traveling in the wrong direction. Chasing "ill-gotten treasures" that left his soul hungry. When he climbed that tree, he wasn't just trying to get a better view. He was reaching for a life he hadn't yet found. That is where repentance begins. It isn't just saying "I’m sorry." It’s the moment we realise we are in the wrong lane and decide to pull the steering wheel hard toward the Light. Like Zacchaeus coming down from that branch, we have to decide that we are finished with our old direction.
The Road Map for the New Way
Once we turn around. We need a map so we don't wander back into the thickets. Proverbs 10 serves as that divine GPS. It tells us that while our old "treasures" have no lasting value. The righteousness Jesus offers is a shield against death itself.
The road map is clear:
•	Leave the Malice Behind: We cannot walk with Jesus while carrying stones to throw at others.
•	Silence the Gossip: Our words should build a bridge, not a wall.
•	Trade Laziness for Diligence: A life of faith isn't lived in a rocking chair. It’s lived with "diligent hands" that serve others and honour God.
Apply Today
Repentance is the U-turn, but integrity is the daily walk. Today, I challenge you to step out of the "rocking chair" of judgment. Stop tallying the mistakes of your neighbours and instead. Review the map of your own heart. Are you walking in honesty? Are you moving toward the Lord, or just sitting still? It is never too late to change lanes. The Lord is standing at the foot of your "tree," calling you by name to come down and start fresh.
A Prayer
Dear Father God, Holy Spirit, forgive me for the years I’ve spent sitting in judgment. Thinking I was "wonderful" while I was actually just stuck. I am sorry for my stubbornness and the hardness that has crept into my heart. I choose today to repent, to turn from my own way and walk in step with You. Thank You for being the God of the second chance, and the third, and the hundredth. Guide my feet onto the path of integrity. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Today’s Fragrance: Repentance is the sweetest scent a soul can carry; it is the aroma of a life turning back toward home.

Zechariah 8:23 (NKJV)
“Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.”
Reflection
There is a magnetic beauty in a soul that has found its rest in God. Zechariah spoke of a time when nations would take hold of a believer’s sleeve. Pleading to follow them because they could see the unmistakable mark of the Divine. It wasn't because of a loud sermon or a grand platform; it was because of a life that hummed with the quiet melody of Heaven.
Consider the humble cook, Nicholas Herman. He spent his days in the heat of a monastery kitchen. Surrounded by the clatter of pots and the endless demands of hungry men. He wrestled with deep anxieties. Wondering if he was truly saved, until he looked at a tree in winter and realised the secret. Growth doesn't come from striving, but from being rooted in the Source.
He transformed his kitchen into a sanctuary. He stopped performing for God and simply started living with Him. Whether he was scrubbing a floor or repairing a worn-out shoe. He carried on a "silent, secret conversation" with the Lord. We know him today as Brother Lawrence, and his simple letters have nourished millions. People were drawn to him not because he was a scholar, but because he carried the fragrance of the Presence of God.
Jesus promised that if He were lifted up, He would draw all people to Himself. When we "lift Him up" in the way we handle a difficult neighbour. The way we wash the dishes, or the way we offer a kind word. We become a living invitation. You don’t have to be perfect to be a light; you simply have to stay close to the Flame.
Apply Today
Don’t wait for a "holy" moment to talk to God. Invite Him into the chaos of your morning. The pile of laundry, and the busy-ness of your home. The more you walk with Him in the small things. The more others will see His light in your eyes.
A Prayer
Dear Father God, You see the scattered pieces of my day and the frantic pace of my heart. I confess, Lord, that I often try to be the general manager of my own life. I juggle so many things at once. Trying to be everything to everyone, and I fail more often than I succeed. I look at the peace of Brother Lawrence and feel so far away from that quiet strength. I miss the mark. I lose my focus, and I feel so very messy. Please forgive me, Father. Teach me to find You in the middle of the noise. Help me to stop striving and start simply abiding. So that even in my imperfections, my grandchildren and my neighbours might see a glimpse of You. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Today’s Fragrance: The world is not looking for perfect people; it is looking for a perfect Savior. When you practice the presence of God in your daily life, you become a signpost pointing the way home. Let Him be the centre of your "every day," and watch how He draws others to His heart.

“Memorize His laws and tell them to your children over and over.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (CEV)

Reflection

The world outside our doors often feels like a rising tide, heavy and relentless, pressing against the glass of our homes with a weight that threatens to shatter our peace. It is a wearying battle to raise children where virtue is treated as a relic and shadows are called light. Yet, we must remember: the darkness has never been a match for the Dawn.

With the Father’s hand guiding yours, you can lead your little one’s home. Faith is not caught in a single moment of lightning; it is cultivated in the quiet, steady rhythm of a life lived for Him.

Consider these five ways to plant the seeds of eternity:

•	Speak the Language of Heaven: Start while their hearts are soft and new. Let the last sound they hear before sleep be the cadence of your voice reading of His wonders, and the gentle murmur of your prayers, thanking the Savior for the grace that covered your own sins.
•	Unveil the Mysteries: As you walk through the doors of the church, don’t let the rituals be mere routine. Explain the water of Baptism and the bread of the Supper as love letters from a King to His people. Show them the beauty behind the tradition.
•	Listen with Your Soul: When they come to you with the "whys" of the spirit, pause. No question is too small. Meet them where they are with the patience of a Shepherd.
•	Guard Their Gazes: In an age of noise, choose stories, through books or screens, that whisper truth to their imaginations and build fortresses in their minds.
•	Wait for the Wind: Trust the Holy Spirit to move in His perfect timing. Like a farmer waiting for the rain, pray without ceasing and be ready to share the Gospel when the soil of their heart is ready to bloom.

The great D.L. Moody once spoke of "two and a half conversions" at a meeting. When questioned if he meant two adults and a child, he shook his head with a knowing smile. "No," he said, "two children and one adult. The children have a whole life to give to God; the adult has only half a life left." Let us give Him the whole life. Let the truth echo in your hallways until it becomes the very air they breathe.

Apply Today

Surrender your anxieties to the Holy Spirit. Ask for the wisdom to see the "open door" moments today, and hold your children, and their futures, up to the light of His grace.

A Prayer

Dear Father, my Lord and my Strength, let Your Word be a fire shut up in my bones that I cannot stay. Remind me of Your promises so that I might whisper them to my grandchildren. Though our time together is a fleeting gift, let every moment be seasoned with Your grace. Use my voice to tell of Your love, so that even when I am gone, the echo of Your Truth remains in their hearts. In the beautiful name of Jesus, Amen.

Today’s Fragrance

Unless you know the Savior personally, the world is a cold and hollow place. But the Resurrection changed everything. Without it, we face only the silence of the earth; with it, we possess the keys to the Kingdom. Do not wait. Turn toward His light today and find the hope that outlives the stars.

By Yvette van Niekerk
Gracious, but hasn't the weather been behaving in a most peculiar fashion lately? One moment I’m adjusting my bonnet against a gale that threatens to whisk me straight to the next county, and the next, the sun is peeking through the clouds as if it hadn’t a care in the world.
However, I find I cannot complain one bit. For when the clouds’ part after a particularly spirited downpour. We are treated to the most magnificent spectacle in all of High Society, and by that, I mean the Heavens, of course!
The Ultimate Fashion Statement
If one were to look closely at Genesis 9:13, one would find that the Almighty has a flair for design that puts even the most sought-after Parisian dressmakers to shame. He says:
‘I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.’
Isn't that just like our Lord? He doesn't simply send a formal note or a dusty ledger to remind us of His intentions. No, He paints a masterpiece across the firmament! The heavens are practically shouting about His glory, and quite frankly, it’s a conversation we should all be listening to.
A Ribbon of Reliability
Now, I’ve been known to forget a parasol or a pair of gloves on more than one occasion (much to the dismay of my dear Aunt Denise), but God never forgets a promise. That shimmering arc in the sky isn't just a bit of atmospheric luck. It’s a vibrant "Don't Forget!" ribbon tied around the finger of the world.
It reminds us that despite the storms that may ruffle our feathers or dampen our hems. He is firmly in control of His creation. He is the Great Architect, the Master Artist, and praise be!n The Sovereign King over every raindrop and ray of light.
A Commitment Most Kind
If you’re feeling a bit like a ship lost at sea today, do take a moment to look up. Remember God’s kindness. It is a steadfast, unwavering sort of commitment that doesn’t go out of style like last season’s bustle. He is committed to you, personally and profoundly.
So, let us tuck our worries away and choose to trust in the One who manages the universe with more grace than a debutante at her first ball.
PRAYER: Lord, I am simply overcome with gratitude! Thank You that every leaf, every star, and every brilliant splash of colour in the sky tells the grand story of how truly great You are. How comforting, how absolutely marvellous, it is to know that You are sovereign over all things. You care for every tiny detail of what You have made, and that includes a person such as me. Amen.

Goodness gracious, one simply cannot help but notice that we are all granted the exact same 168 hours in a week. It is a staggering thought, is it not? Yet, if one only tends to their spiritual constitution during a brief hour on Sunday morning. I daresay they shall remain in a state of perpetual spiritual infancy.
Now, do picture an infant for a moment. Quite adorable, yes, but remarkably incapable of feeding themselves. They would choose a bowl of smarties over a plate of nourishing carrots every single time! They tumble about, wander into the most inconvenient sorts of trouble, and are, if we are being honest, rather self-centred. They require constant discipline and a firm hand of training.
Are you beginning to see the portrait I’m painting?
The "New Birth" is a marvellous, breathtaking event. A launching pad of the highest order! It was never intended to be a permanent residence in a crib. As it is written in Hebrews 6:1, “Let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding.”
Do take note of those two rather demanding words: "Let us." That implies the responsibility rests squarely upon our own shoulders. At some point, a lady or gentleman must simply stand tall and declare, “Starting this very instant, I shall do whatever is required to grow up spiritually and discover the grand plan God has for my life!”
It reminds me of a delightful, if slightly convicting, tale regarding General Louis Lyautey at the end of the Great War. Upon asking his gardener to plant a specific tree, the gardener protested, noting the tree was so slow-growing it would take a century to reach maturity.
The General didn't miss a beat. “In that case,” he cried, “there is no time to lose! Plant it this very afternoon!”
If you are looking for a fail-safe plan to ensure you aren't a spiritual sapling forever, look no further than Psalm 1:2-3: “They delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”

A Sincere Prayer
Dear Father God,
I must confess, I find myself struggling with my own spiritual growth. Every now and again, I seem to come to a grinding halt, and I realize quite clearly that I am in desperate need of Your Holy Spirit. As I attempt to pick up the pace, I desire nothing more than to walk in perfect step with You.
My life, quite frankly, is worth very little without Your hand guiding my path. Lord Jesus, You are intimately acquainted with my circumstances. You understand the trifles and trials I face daily. I am committing my day into Your hands; every deed, every stray thought, and every bit of work. I trust in You, believing You are capable of doing far more than my meagre imagination can provide. Thank You for Your steadfast loving-kindness.
In the holy name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

"Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." — Jeremiah 33:3
We have all walked those dusty, stretching miles where the silence feels heavy enough to crush the spirit. There are days when we cry out, and our words seem to dissolve like mist against a cold, grey sky. We leave messages that go unreturned; we offer up our hearts only to feel as though they’ve vanished into a vast, digital abyss. In the quiet, the enemy whispers the cruelest lie of all: No one is listening.
But then, the Word breaks through the shadows. A steady, golden lamp for our feet. I am reminded, with a heart full of renewed wonder, that there is One who always answers.
He is not a distant King, secluded behind high walls. No, He is the God who meets us in the middle of the mess. In the chaos, the heartache, and those "how did I get here?" Moments that leave us breathless with fear. The Creator of the stars doesn't just tolerate our voices; He invites them. He leans down from the heavens. His infinite in majesty yet intimate in His love, and whispers, "I am right here. Speak to Me."
And oh, the beauty of His faithfulness! He doesn't answer because we’ve earned it or because the timing is convenient. He answers because He is faithful, and He cannot be anything other than who He is.
If your heart is weary, let it leap at this: He has so much more to show you. Beyond your current horizon lie "great and mighty things." Mysteries of grace and wonders of His character that you haven't even begun to imagine. Our God is not finished with us yet.
A Prayer of Surrender
Dear Father God,
Thank You that the line to Your heart is never busy. Thank You for the promise that when I call, You are already there. Lord, I come to You today with nothing left in my hands. I am weary, I am distressed, and I have lost my way in the dark.
I stop trying to fix what I cannot touch. I surrender it all, my fear, my confusion, my very life, into Your capable, nail-scarred hands. I cannot face this day alone, and I refuse to try any longer. Holy Spirit, be my Guide. Be my breath when I am weak. I ask this in the precious, powerful name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

“He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.” Mark 16:6
One must pause to wonder if we truly and I mean truly grasp the sheer magnitude of the phrase, "He is risen!" It is a statement quite unlike any other in the history of the world. While we might ponder it occasionally over a morning cup of tea, have we allowed ourselves to imagine the spectacular impact it ought to have on our own lives?
Consider the facts: The Lord Jesus was placed in a tomb, quite thoroughly dead, and yet, on the third day, He rose! In that one breathtaking moment, the amazing grace of God was bestowed upon us all. He is alive, and through the profound act of accepting Him, we are granted the marvellous privilege of being called His children.
This means, dear friends, that you are entitled to a fresh start a renewed mind and the divine capability to tackle any task with the expectation of success. When we labour for the Lord Jesus rather than for the fickle approval of men, He ensures we are able to do our very best.
The Symphony of His Presence
This "New Beginning" leads us directly into one of the most awesome experiences a soul can have: Living in the Light. One can only imagine the scene described in 2 Chronicles 5:13-14, where the Israelites gathered before the temple. It was a veritable symphony of trumpeters and musicians raising a joyful song of thanks, declaring that the Lord is good and His love endures forever.
As they lifted their voices, something truly spectacular occurred. A cloud so dense and divine, the very Glory of God, filled the temple to such an extent that the priests found themselves entirely unable to carry out their usual duties. The Lord simply took over the room!
Is that not our greatest desire? To have the Glory of God so fill our lives that our own light cannot help but shine brightly in His honour? Today, we celebrate not just an empty tomb, but a present, living King who invites us to walk in His luminous presence every single day.
Prayer
Abba Father, in the name of Your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, we offer our sincerest thanks for today. How utterly magnificent it must be to stand in Your presence! We embrace the Lord Jesus as our Savior and trust, with full confidence, that You are beginning a new work within us. It is our heart’s desire to experience Your Glory in our own lives through the filling of Your Holy Spirit. May our lives shine for Your honour, from this day until the very end. In the name above all names Jesus Christ, Amen.

It is often said that one should finish what they start, but never has a task been completed with such magnificent, life-altering finality.

In the eyes of the world, that Friday looked like a somber conclusion. But for those of us who know the rest of the story, it was the ultimate "It is Finished."

•	The Work is Done: Jesus didn’t just make a start on our salvation; He completed it. Once. For all. No "to-do" list remains for our grace.

•	The Burden is Lifted: Every stumble, every heavy heart, and every "socially awkward" failure we’ve ever endured was carried by Him on that cross.

•	Victory in Disguise: What appeared to be a defeat was, in truth, the most spectacular triumph in history.

Because of the cross, we aren't just surviving; we are forgiven, free, and fully restored. And that, dear friends, is a truth worth making a bit of a fuss over!

PRAYER: Lord, thank You for the cross and the extraordinary sacrifice You made for me. Help me to walk boldly in the freedom You’ve provided and to live a life that reflects Your grace. In Jesus Name Amen.

When God interrupts an ordinary day

The field stretched out in the early morning heat, the kind of day that asks nothing extraordinary of you. Just the work. Just the oxen. Just the rhythm of the Plow breaking familiar ground.
Elisha had no reason to expect anything different.

He was not in a temple. He was not on his knees in a sacred place with his hands folded and his heart prepared. He was working, dusty, ordinary, unremarkable. The twelfth pair of oxen ahead of him, and the long day still unfolding.

And then a cloak fell across his shoulders.

No announcement. No trumpet. Just the quiet, unmistakable weight of it.
1 Kings 19:19 — "Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him."
I have to be honest with you. I almost missed it.

I have been walking through a dry season lately. The kind where the ground of your soul feels cracked and the sky feels distant, and you find yourself searching your own heart with a fine-tooth comb. Wondering what you are missing. Wondering if God has gone quiet or if you simply stopped hearing Him.
My mind has been a battlefield. I won't dress that up. Some mornings I wake up and I can barely find my footing before the thoughts begin.

And yet, and yet, something has been whispering that I am not as alone as it feels.
I believe someone has been praying for me. I can feel it the way you feel warmth before you see the fire.

Then this morning, this verse stopped me cold.

Elisha wasn't seeking a calling. He wasn't fasting or praying for direction or waiting on a mountaintop. He was simply present, faithful in the ordinary, and Elijah found him.

The cloak was not placed on someone who had everything together. It was placed on a working man, mid-stride, mid-furrow, mid-ordinary-life.

And I felt something shift in my chest as I read it.

LORD is this You?

I am no one special. I want to be honest about that. I am a person living an ordinary life, carrying ordinary struggles, fighting ordinary doubts. But this morning I felt the Word of God lean across the distance between Heaven and my desk and whisper; I see you. I am not finished with you. Take the cloak.

I don't fully know what this new season looks like. I won't pretend that I do. But I felt something settle: quietly, powerfully. Like the weight of a mantle across tired shoulders.
I am taking it. In faith, with trembling hands … I am taking it.

Prayer

Dear Father God, I thank You for this word that found me this morning when I was not looking for it, which is, I think, exactly how You work.

I confess that I am unsure. I don't always trust my own reading of things, and my heart has been a complicated place lately. But I choose faith over feeling today. I accept the cloak You are placing over my shoulders, even though my hands are shaking as I reach for it.

I believe You are moving in my life, through me, ahead of me, behind me. I believe You are drying my eyes even as I write this. I believe You are holding me in a grip I cannot break free from. Even on the days I feel most lost, and I am grateful for that.

I will not worry. You know my heart better than I do, and You are not surprised by any of it.
Here I am, LORD, this broken, tender, silly heart of mine let Your will be done.
Don't let me go. I love You.

In the precious name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and my Saviour Amen.
