How Sweet It Is....

O my goodness! I am going to have a one year old in less than a month! Where did the time go?
The last 11 months have been the best of my life, and I know its only going to get better from here.

Rowen is about 20lbs 11oz. She has 6 teeth and is practically running. She has such a little sense of humor already and is definitely Ms. Personality.

She says "mama", "ada (dada)", and "banana".
She can wave and clap. She knows who Douglas is and can retrieve him when asked.
I love watching her learn new skills, it is such a rewarding feeling.

9 Month Stats, Llamas, and Cupcakes

Rowen had her 9 month appointment today. She is 18 lbs 2 oz, 27 3/4in long, and has a 17 3/4in head!
We were also given the go ahead to start feeding her real people food! Pasta, mac and cheese, all kinds of yummy stuff!

We took Rowen to her first fair today! As many know, she has a stuffed llama named Douglas who she looooooves. As soon as I found out about the fair, I pretty much decided that we were going for the sole purpose of Rowen getting to see a real llama.

We walked around forever. She saw goats and sheep, cows and horses. We took her to the rabbit barn and the poultry barn. But we had yet to see a llama.

Finally as we were about to give up and go home, we walked past the feeding/petting zoo. There were llamas! Yay!!

She was unimpressed with the pony.. maybe this means she wont ask us for one later ;P

There were also pot bellied pigs and pygmy goats! She loved them all! We had such a great time!

O! And there was a camel!

Lastly, Daddy got his birthday present today! A few of our friends all pitched in to get him a cupcake tattoo. For those of you that don't know, we called Rowen "Cupcake" in utero. We decided that we were going to get cupcake tattoos for her :)

9 months

I can not believe that my little baby is 9 months old already! What the heck happened?!

In the last month Rowen has been getting into everything! The second we put her down, she is off messing with something. She loves to pull the kitchen towels off of the oven handle. Playing with the remotes, Daddy's Xbox controller, laptops, and just about anything on the coffee table keeps her pretty busy.

She is now a pro crawler, and my goodness she is FAST. You look away for half of a second and she is gone! And much to the dogs dismay, she loves to go after them. She is also a pro at pulling herself up to the couch, so they cant even seek refuge there anymore. No where is safe!

As of yesterday, she has decided that its cool to stand on her own. This terrifies me. Between that, and her dragging/pushing around a walker toy her Auntie Erin gave her, Im beginning to think that walking is in the near future...and I am not ready for that!

We have been trying to transition completely away from pureed food. She now gets pear slices, sweet potato slices, broccoli, among other things.

Also this week, she is now the proud owner of not one, but TWO teeth!

I am just in shock. I can not believe how fast she is growing up. Its so awesome to watch her explore and learn new things.

She has her 9 month wellness appointment tomorrow morning. I will update with stats after :)

Rowen is 8 months... where has the time gone?

Since our last blog post, a lot of VERY important life events have happened.

Rowen got her first boy band CD, which we all know is a very crucial moment in a young girls life.

We spent time with friends. This is Sage and her mommy Amanda. We met through my January 2012 mommy group. We like them :)

And most exciting... Rowen got her first TOOTH!! Its not much of a tooth yet, but its there...she doesnt let us look at it though. She covers it up with her tongue when we try. Silly girl.

7 months and First word!

Hi everyone!!

It has been so difficult to keep up with this lately! Planning a wedding, work, and trying to keep up with a mobile 7 month old doesnt leave very much time for blogging!

We officially have a crawler! Rowen is crawling, pulling herself up on stuff, and getting into stuff she shouldn't be! It has definitely been hectic.
She is "talking" more and more. She has been saying "mama" all day!

Rowen had her 6 month appointment last week. She was already technically 7 months.

She is weighing in at 16 pounds 7 ounces and is 26.25in tall! She is growing so fast!

Why I Do the Things I Do

This is going to be a different kind of blog than I normally write.

I feel like I am constantly having to explain why I parent the way I do. Which I am fine with. The things I do now, definitely are not the norm of when I was growing up, and I realize that its odd for other people too. People always look at me like I have a third eye when I mention cloth diapering, exclusively pumping, and now making baby food from scratch. I always get the "But isn't that more work" questions... yes... but its worth it and I'm going to explain why.

Im not going to cover cloth diapers again :) I have 2 other posts dedicated to why I cloth diaper. You can find them here ...and here...

Exclusive pumping....

So breastfeeding did not work for us. We had a very very hard time from the start. Rowen would not latch at the hospital. The hospital nurses were...well... we did not have a good experience at all with them trying to help. It was very traumatic and really made me scared to even try again.. But.. when we got home we tried. We got shields and it was going well for a while. Then, I had to go back to work and school when Rowen was 2 weeks old. She was getting bottles practically all day. She developed a preference for bottles and decided that she hated boobs. After many many nights of crying meltdowns on both of our parts, I decided it wasn't worth it. She wasn't happy, I wasn't happy, and we stopped.

So what exactly is exclusive pumping? Well, instead of nursing Rowen, I spend about 20 minutes, 5 times a day, hooked up to a breast pump. I'm a lucky that we do not have to supplement with formula and she gets only breast milk.

So, basically we do the work of both breastfeeding moms and formula feeding moms. Its a lot of work. But, its what works best for my family.

When we first found out about Rowen, we were terrified. How were we going to afford to feed a baby? Breast feeding is free. I knew that we had to make it work. When it didn't, we had to figure something else out.
I also didnt want to lose the benefits of breastfeeding. I had already planned on pumping while I was at school anyway, so it just became a full-time thing and still is.

Why do I do it? I feel this overwhelming sense of guilt for not being able to make breast feeding work for us. Its silly, because she still gets only breast milk, and we bond other ways. There is such a negativity towards exclusively pumping. I dont know how many doctors, including Rowen's pediatrician, told me that this wasnt going to work and that nursing was the only acceptable way to feed her. Its so ridiculous to me that the doctors would try to make me feel bad for feeding my child. Whatever. The pediatrician thinks I nurse Rowen. Rowen is gaining weight and is healthy and exclusive pumping works. If it means that my freezer looks like this for the next 6 months, so be it :)

Home-made baby food

Its cheaper than jar food and is better for her too. Simple as that. I enjoy making her baby food and knowing exactly what is in the food I am feeding her. Also I can make 3 months worth of food at once and not have to worry about it.

I hope that this post helps other moms be confident in their decisions. Just because its not what everyone else is doing, and just because other people dont understand the things you do, does not mean that it is wrong. You are a mom. Whether you formula feed, breast feed, use disposable diapers, cloth diapers, whatever, you know whats best for your child. Be confident in your parenting and dont let other people make you second guess yourself. As long as you are happy, and your baby is happy, you are doing this parenting thing right <3

Rowen is six months old today! What?! When did that happen?

About this time last year was when we found out about her. We we were worried, scared, and wondering if we were ready to be her parents.
Today, I could not imagine life without her! She has made me such a better person already and teaches me something new everyday.
I love watching her meet her milestones and grow a little more each day.

I know its been a month since I posted.. Here are some pictures of what we have been up to :)

...Since my last post. I thought with being out of school I would be better at updating.. obviously not!

So many things have happened!

I celebrated my first mothers day . The day was spent cuddling on the couch, watching Harry Potter movies, and Colin making dinner. It may not have been considered much by others, but it was absolutely perfect..

We announced our engagement...finally... We have techically been engaged since December. I dont know why we dont just tell people when things happen.. It must be our style or something. But yes, we are planning a wedding for September 2013, and I am so excited and already in planning mode.

Rowen went swimming for the first time. It was so much fun and Rowen did so good. I was terrified that she was going to freak out when we got in the pool but she didnt. She loved it and was very upset when we took her out. Hopefully we will go again this weekend :)

I started a new job. I work 20 hours in my old office, and 20 hours upstairs in a new office. Its not the most exciting, but it pays the bills. I have had nothing to do the past week, so I have been wedding planning :). Maybe I will start writing my blogs instead of wasting time haha.

We are still in the process of unpacking... I dont know if we will ever finish.. nor do I really care haha.

When I get off I would much rather spend time with my family than unpacking... Monday is a holiday, maybe I will get something productive accomplished. But probably not.

Colin and I went on a date :) We went to watch the Avengers. It was awesome. Thanks again to Sarah for babysitting! I am still planning on baking you cookies :)

This is what I wake up to most mornings... How Rowen is a morning person, I do not know, but this sure does make it easier to get up :)

4 Month Stats

Hey guys!
This is going to be a short post. Just wanted to give an update from Rowens appointment yesterday!

At 4 months, she is 13lbs 4oz, 25in long and has a 16in head circumference! My baby has doubled in size!

Her pediatrician gave us the go ahead to start her on solids. We tried some sweet potatoes, but she didnt seem to interested in them. Thats ok, we will wait a month or 2 :)

She also got shots yesterday, so she has been a crabby monster, but I did manage to get some snuggles out of her this morning :)

On another note, I will be starting a new blog! I have learned so much from my mom group about how to be save money, stretch your budget further, and even be more environmentally friendly. I want to share all of the info I have with everyone, but dont want to take away from this blog. This blog is about Rowen, which is why I chose to start a new one :) Here is the link for anyone interested :)

I know its been a month since my last actual blog. Sorry! Things have been crazy. I have had school projects, work, and house hunting. Thank goodness all of that is about to die down after this week. Finals will be over on Thursday!

As some of you know, we found somewhere to live! Hooray! We actually moved back into our old apartment.. yes the exact same one as we lived in a year ago. You know that feeling you get when you just know you are home? That's the way I felt when we walked in after getting our keys. It was empty, but somehow, I still felt more at home than I have the entire past year. I love it here. This was mine and Colin's first apartment together that we had all to ourselves. The year we spent here was one of the best of my life. I was so upset, I cried the entire time we were moving our stuff out last summer. I am so glad that I stumbled upon the ad about it being for rent again, and I am so excited that Rowen gets to spend the first year of her life in a place that has so many wonderful memories and means so much to me.
We are a little cramped, since it is a one bedroom, but it is so worth it, both emotionally and financially :)

Rowen is 4 months old. When on earth did that happen?! She manages to melt our hearts a little more everday. She absolutely loves watching Top Gear (British version) and the Muppets, sitting in her Bumbo, and the dogs. She talks ALL.THE.TIME. She sings and giggles. She is such an awesome little girl!

She rolled over for this month. That was awesome! And she had her first bubble bath :)
She is growing so fast, it kills me. But it is so cool to see her advance and meet milestones.

I just have to show off my VERY FIRST MOTHERS DAY present :) We did a gift exchange in my mommy group, and this is what I got. I am absolutely in love with it :)

How to Cloth Diaper Rowen Style

The "I-need-a-change face

Ok!

So I have a few people ask me how exactly we go about cloth diapering Rowen. So here is a step-by-step visual of how a typical diaper change goes and also a list of what you will need, complete with pictures and links!
I really dont think there is a "wrong" way to cloth diaper. Its really about trying out different things until you find out what works for you.

Dislcaimer: There are TONS of different types of cloth diapers... this is just what we use.

What you need (pictures to follow):
All-in-One Pocket diaper: We use Sunbaby and Alvababy, but there are a bunch of other brands out there.
Prefolds: once again many brands and what not, although I recommend Affordable cloth diaper. Affordable, fast, and they have awesome customer service.
Liners/inserts: we dont use these but I will show you how they work
Diaper pail: we just use a trash can with a lid
Diaper pail liner: We use this Planet Wise one
Diaper pail freshener
Wet bags: optional, but we have multiple, they are awesome.
Cloth Diaper friendly detergent- You can find a list by clicking here
Cloth diaper friendly rash cream- We use Grandma El's because it smells amazing You can get Califorina Baby at Target. Here is a link to a list :)
Diaper sprayer (this is also optional but awesome)

The set up:
We keep our diapers separated in canvas totes, in the shelves, on her changing table. We keep the prefolds on the top, since we change those the most, covers on the second shelf, and the liners/inserts on the bottom since we never use them.

Typical Diaper Change

Step 1: First you need an adorable assistant in need of a diaper change :)

Step 2: Remove dirty diaper. We do not change the pocket every diaper change. We change it a couple times a day, if its really soaked, or if poop gets on it. So if none of these things happen, we just take out the prefold and toss it in the diaper pail. If it is a poopy diaper see step 2a.

Step 2a: Take poopy prefold (and pocket if there is poop on it). Spray it out in the toilet with the diaper sprayer, we have one made by Fuzzibunz. Then toss in diaper pail.

Step 3: Put clean diaper under baby booty. We lay down the pocket first, then lay the prefold flat on top of it:

Step 5: Diaper rash cream! You can not just use any kind of diaper rash cream with cloth diapers. But don't fret, there are plenty of options(see link under What you will need) As previously mentioned, we use Grandma El's which looks like this:

and button the tabs on the pocket diaper.

All in one pockets usually have buttons around the

leg gussets so you can adjust for the perfect fit :)

And you have a cloth diapered baby!

Laundry time!

We wash diapers every 2-3 days. Its a pretty simple process.

Take the diaper pail liner out of the diaper pail and dump it in the washer. You can even toss the diaper pail liner in there too and wash it.

Now, you are going to need cloth diaper safe detergent. A lot of detergents can compromise the absorbency of the diaper.

I use Rockin Green,

They have a lot of scents with a lot of fun names like Lavender Mint Revival, Rage against the Raspberries, Smashing Watermelons, and my favorite Bare Naked Babies.

Hot Pre-Rinse. Wash in hot water, with one scoop detergent, on your washing machine's "heavy" cycle.

When it comes time to dry the diaper, take out the pockets and hang dry them. Putting them in the dryer can wear out the elastic.

Throw the prefolds in the dryer, and dry on high heat

And you have clean diapers :)

How to use pockets with inserts

As I said before, we dont use inserts. The main reason being that with inserts you have to change the pocket every diaper change, which is why we prefer the prefold method. But since the majority of pocket diapers that you buy come with inserts, I figured I would show you how they work.

The pocket has a little slit/pocket that the inserts slide in:

Just slide the insert in, and change like a disposable diaper.

Cloth Wipes

We also use cloth wipes. Super simple to make, also saves money.

I bought 1/2 yard of plain flannel from Hobby Lobby (<$2 is you use the 40% off coupons you can get online all of the time.)

I cut it up into wipes. Stick the wipes in our wipe warmer and pour homemade solution on them.

Solution:

Mix together, pour over wipes. You can also keep in a spray bottle, and spray on wipes during diaper changes.

Now to answer some other questions I get a lot:

Doesn't the diaper pail stink?

Answer: Yes, sometimes. But we use Rockin' Green Shake It Up Pail Refresher.

It comes in all of the great scents as the detergent.

All you do is sprinkle a little directly into the pail and Voila! The smell is gone.

Isnt it gross?

Sometimes, but then again so is changing a poopy disposable diaper.

What do you do when you are running errands and need to change the baby?

Remember those wet bags I was talking about? This is where they come in.

Change the diaper as you would normally, then toss it in the wet bag. They

are water proof so you don't have to worry about getting bodily fluids all over

your diaper bag.

Is it really worth it?

For us, yes I sat down and figured out today that we go through roughly 144 diapers/week... A 144 pack of Huggies is $45..that is $180 dollars a month..Cloth wipes save us an additional $20 a month.

Me being a full-time student/part-time office assistant and Colin being a stay-at-home dad, $200 a month is a lot of money

2 Month Check Up and Shots

Well we just got back from Rowen's 2 month wellness appointment.

Our little cupcake is now weighing in at 11 lbs 12 oz and is 23 1/4 inches long. Thats 50th percentile for weight and 75th for her height.

She also got 3 shots and her rotovirus virus vaccination. The rotovirus vaccs is given orally and she was not happy about that..and well the shots.. Im sure you can imagine... Mom even teared up when she started crying. Its a good thing Colin was holding her, because I would have been a mess! I need to get used to this..

I took the rest of the day off to stay home and help Colin because I figured she would be fussy. But she actually hasnt been very bad. Just sleepy and a little fussy.

Anyway, I off to go snuggle with this..

Rowen is 2 months old... yep.. 2.. and boy has the time flown!

In 2 months, Rowen has at least doubled in size (we will find out the exact numbers at her 2 month check up on Thursday). She has outgrown her newborn clothes. She has evolved from a quiet, sleeping, baby, to a very vocal, smiley, and sometimes screaming baby.

She can hold her head up for longs periods of time, and like to look at mom and dad and smile.She is still not a fan of tummy time, but we are working on it. Rowen is very much a "swing potato". She absolutely loves looking at the mobile on her swing. But she still loves to cuddle up on mommy and daddy's chests too :)

We went on our first "play date". It was actually lunch with a few women that I met through my internet mommy group, who happen to live in El Paso. The daddy's got to join in on the fun too :)

Rowen even got to get dressed up in her first pair of Osk Kosh overalls and her first pair of shoes. Colin said she looked like Punky Brewster, but I think she is adorable!

My mommy group is pretty much awesome. They have been such a huge source of support throughout the pregnancy as well as now with all of the first time parent fears. with 193 members, there is such a wide array of personalities, occupations, etc there is almost always someone who can answer any questions that you might have, as well as provide hours of entertainment. I absolutely love my J12 mamas!

One of our mom's who lives in Namibia made this video of her son! It is so freaking cute. I have literally watched it at least 10 times :) Go watch it now!

Our group also does little exchanges with each other. Right now we are in the middle of a blanket exchange. Rowen got her blanket from J12 mama Victoria and her baby Piper on Saturday. It is so soft! I love..I mean... Rowen loves it :)

Cloth diapering has been going great! It is so much easier than I think both Colin and I though its was going to be. We have been in nothing but cloth since we started last weekend and I couldn't be happier. I really wanted this to work out for us because of how much money it has been saving us (~$100/month) so I'm ecstatic that we haven't had any problems!

We have started to look for a new place to live, since our lease is up in May and we are ready for it just to be the 3 of us...well 5 including Reesey and Belly. I am so excited to be on our own, in our own house, with our own space! We have been cramped into one bedroom, so it will be wonderful to actually have space to put stuff!

Other than growing, nothing too exciting has been going on.. I will update on Thursday after her check up!

Oooo! We are excited for our trip home in a few weeks and are so ready to see everyone...

Couch-to-5k, Cuddles, Cupcakes, and Cloth Diapers

This week has been one of those weeks where it seems like a lot has happened, but at the same time, nothing really happened.

I started the Couch to 5k running program this week. It is a 6 week program that gets you basically from being a couch potato to being able to run a 5k...hence the name :) Its a lot harder, and I am way more out of shape than I thought I was, but the end result will be worth it! If you are interested in the program click here :) I love this program because it is something that I can do with Rowen. With Colin already running everyday, he is able to join us as well. Its awesome.

Being sick sucks. I was sick on Tuesday and ended up coming home after I took an exam that morning. Colin has been sick since Wednesday :(. The only good thing about being sick, is being able to cuddle with Rowen. We spent a good majority of the day Tuesday in bed. She loves when being talked to and kissed on the cheeks. She even "talks" back now and flashes huge smiles :) I love it!

We started cloth diapers this weekend and I LOVE THEM!! When people think cloth diapers, usually a piece of fabric and safety pins come to mind... but boy are they wrong! Cloth diapers have evolved so much!
We are using prefolds and all in 1(AIO) and all in 2's (AI2) as covers. Prefolds are the piece of fabic that used to be safety pinned. AIO and AI2 look like regular diapers, they are just cloth and you button them over the prefolds.

This is a prefold folded in the "bikini twist" style, which we use.

Why cloth diapers you might ask?
1. Less diapers filling up landfills
2. No chemicals like in disposables which means they are safer for baby's butt
3. Less diaper rashes!
4. Baby butts are SUPER CUTE in cloth diapers

5. $$$$$

I paid right around $200 for our cloth diaper stash. I know that may seem like a lot, but its not at all. Especially since we will not have to buy diapers ever again. Our stash consists of only one size diapers. This means that they are adjustable to fit until your baby is potty trained!

We were spending $40 every 2 weeks on disposable diapers.

I'll just run the numbers for you:

Disposables:
$80/month x 12 months in a year x 2 years = $1920

And thats only if she is potty trained at 2 years.

Cloth:

$200 upfront + 1 more load of laundry a week

Yes. They are a little bit more work than disposables, but they have already paid for themselves just with how much we have saved by not having to buy diapers every 2 weeks. We are only doing them part time for now, since we still have close to 600 Huggies we got from my mom to go through :)

As most of you know we have a love of cupcakes in this house. Since Rowen's in utero nickname was cupcake, we have accumulated quite a bit of cupcake clothing, piggy banks, car seat covers, etc.

Since she has outgrown her newborn clothes (tear :( ), we have actually been able to put her in some of the cupcake clothes. Here are some pictures of our little cupcake in her cupcake gear :)

In other news, Rowen got a new swing thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Rick! Its awesome. It has a little canopy around it on which a lighted mobile projects butterflies on :) Thanks again!!

An Uneventful Week and a Whole Lot of S's

Disclaimer: I have been a HUGE slacker with taking pictures this week, so please forgive the lack there of.. Most of them are from today :)

The past week has been pretty uneventful. We really haven't done anything exciting, and have just been staying home...although mom and dad did get to go out on a date last Monday for Valentines day. Nothing fancy, just dinner and a movie, but it was very nice to get out!

O! I guess we do have some exciting news! We..well mom...got to hear Rowen's first laughs on Tuesday. It was awesome. I have been worrying about missing firsts like this since I am at work all day, but am super excited that I was home for this. It was one of the best Valentines presents ever.

And that was pretty much our unexciting week!
