Ray Manzarek dies at 74 in Germany

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founder member of the 1960s rock band The Doors, has died aged 74. He formed the band with lead singer Jim Morrison in 1965 after a chance meeting in Venice Beach, Los Angeles. Manzarek, who had suffered from bile duct cancer for many years, died in a clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, with his wife and brothers at his bedside. The Doors found fame in the 1960s with hits such as The End, Break on Through to the Other Side and Hello I Love You. They sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and Manzarek became one of the best-known keyboardists of his era, his artistry colouring tracks like Riders on the Storm and Light my Fire.

Yahoo’s board has agreed to buy Tumblr, the popular blogging service, for about $1.1 billion in cash, people with knowledge of the agreement said on Sunday.The deal, sealed at a meeting of Yahoo’s board, is expected to be announced as soon as Monday, said one the people, who was not authorized to speak ahead of the announcement. Contacted Sunday, Sara Bettencourt Gorman, a Yahoo spokeswoman, declined to discuss the deal. A representative from Tumblr was not immediately available. The acquisition is the biggest yet under Yahoo’s chief executive, Marissa Mayer, as she attempts to reinvent the once-embattled Web pioneer’s fortunes. Under her, the company is seeking to make up for years of missing out on the growing use of social networks and mobile devices. Buying Tumblr is intended to help address that shortfall. The six-year-old company is one of the most popular blogging services, with over 108 million blogs. Buying the company could provide a wealth of user-generated content. The acquisition will be a test for Ms. Mayer, who will have to ensure that Tumblr does not get lost inside Yahoo. more

Cedric Arnold was on assignment in Thailand when he first saw a shipyard worker covered head-to-toe in tattoos. This was Arnold's entry point into the yantra tattoo tradition, one that goes back hundreds of years and spans several countries in Southeast Asia. Arnold's project, “Sacred Ink,” consumed four and a half years of his life and took him all over Thailand to cover this tradition in its entirety, from the giant ceremonies for devotees to the rare tattoos that are only found in certain parts of the country. Incorporating elements of Buddhism, Animism, Brahmanism, and Hinduism, the tradition is believed to go back as far as the ninth century, and there’s even historical evidence of soldiers wearing the tattoos for protection in battle during the 16th and 17th centuries.Yantra tattoos are still believed to have mystical powers and can be worn on the skin or drawn on other surfaces. Once seen as the mark of gangsters or even assassins, the tradition has become increasingly popular—and expensive. Yantra attracted international attention when Angelina Jolie got two of the tattoos on a trip to Bangkok. Now tourists travel there specifically to get inked, and the subculture has drawn lots of media interest.

The swan called Whooper has been looking for a new mate for the past two years in the skies over Les Mielles Golf and Country Club on the Channel Island of Jersey after losing his partner. But instead of falling for a fellow bird he's become obsessed with the dark-coloured Eurocopter that regularly lands at the adjacent airstrip. But the helicopter's pilot is so terrified the besotted bird - named after its species the whooper swan - will fly into its rotor blades they've been forced to clip his wings.
