We need to talk ...

First off, my computer ended up not being fixable, and the "company", as all companies do, wormed their way out of warranty coverage by claiming there was traces of water damage, which according to them, invalidated the claim. It's really almost funny, how poor workmanship is covered under the warranty, but not the resulting conditions of poor workmanship, ie. moisture seeping into the product over time due to bad insulation.

Anyways, after I got over that whole ordeal, I did my research and got a pretty decent deal on a new laptop.

Hopefully this one will hold up better then the last.

Now I wish that was the worst news I could be bring to you today, but it sadly is not. I came back from my leave to discover a disabled account. Now this isn't the first time I've had a tussle with the big man upstairs, but it will be my last, as I am just tired of constantly having to deal with their utter lack of care for theirs users.

It's just no longer worth it any more, at least under current conditions, and because of this, I have decided to take a permanent leave of absence from the blogging community. Hey, maybe in a while I might reconsider and come back to blogging - maybe even right back here ... but most likely not.

Well, it's been a fun ride. Times when I loved it, times when I didn't. Overall though, I really enjoyed sharing my knowledge, opinion, interests and just my self with you guys, and hopefully you enjoyed it just the same.

Thanks again for your time over the past months, and hopefully you learned something!

Hey guys!

Thanks for the supporting comments on my Lollapalooza recap, I really appreciate the replies. Sadly, not all that glitters is gold, as some bad news appeared in my life, although temporary. My normal computer (a three year old HP HDX16 laptop for you techies) experienced a case of death a few days after arriving back home.

Luckily, I bought a 3 year warranty on the machine, and it thankfully slipped in just before the expiry date. The catch is that I have a two week period where I am stranded without computer (I am posting this from a bud's computer), and therefore am forced to put a temporary hiatus on the whole What Goes On project.

For those who actually care about the whole computer repair progress, I believe my issue was the hardware wiring just giving in due to extended use. As a computer science guy, I tend to push my machine, and just from overuse, I think I really pushed it to its death. Now, according to the company, they will look at it, figure out the issue, and send in for the parts to fix it. If the parts end up not fixing it, or they find that no parts would solve the issue, they'll give my in store credit for the cost of purchase towards a new computer. Either way, they say I will lose my saved data (/sigh) so I'm actually hoping they can't fix the beast, as it would mean I could get a totally new and incredibly better computer essentially for free.

I can only hope.

Hello everyone!

Now that the Lollapalooza Music Festival is over, I finally am able to look back onto the weekend and make sense of all that happened in that short period of time, and hopefully understand what was good and what was bad about the weekend.

The Good

Chicago was a lovely city to hold a festival. Most festivals are stranded far from civilization, but as Lollapalooza is hosted right in the middle of downtown Chicago, there is plenty to do both in and out of the park.
Grant Park, the location of the festival, was a perfectly sized mega-park that provided plenty of room for park activities, while never seeming like it was TOO big (travel time, desolation, etc).
Plenty of selection was provided in the food category. It wasn't like some events where all you can buy is Pizza Pizza and Pepsi, or whatnot. Instead, local vendors bid to have a booth in what they deemed "Chow Town", resulting in hundreds of unique food options.
The transportation system in Chicago was spectacular, removing any sort of panic that usually follows a late arrival or big crowd.
There were thousands and thousands of porta-potties. No lines. Ever. 'Nuff said.
With over a hundred bands to choose from, every genre was covered and everyone could see and hear their own unique lineup of bands over 8 stages throughout the three day fest.
Every band that was booked played, save one smaller band, which is a rarity when dealing with talent.
The headliners were balanced very well considering how every night featured two major headliners (as well as cult headliners for smaller audiences), ie. My Morning Jacket vs. Eminem and Foo Fighters vs. Deadmau5.
The front of the stages weren't saved for the rich people, as their were no restrictions in front of the stage for where you could or could not go.
The rain.

The Bad

As a negative to the first point in The Good section, because the festival is hosted in the city, you are forced to rent overpriced Chicago accommodations, as opposed to relatively inexpensive country-festival camping.
Against the fourth point in The Good, because of the complex schedule, many similar bands were impossible to see due to lack of travel time, crowds, among other factors between the many far off stages.
A few bands were off their mark over the weekend, namely Ce Lo Green and Noah & The Whale. Ce Lo, as expected, came late, and he was very rude to the crowd once he realized that they were not happy. All he did were covers and almost completely ignored his own songs. I didn't actually see him first hand, but according to some, he thought he was being smart by trying to say he was not going to do his hit Fuck You (and then surprise them at the end), but it turned on him as the audience got rowdy.
Noah & The Whale on the other hand, just really didn't fit well into the live experience. Mainly, their songs are odd because nobody and I mean nobody (at least in North America) likes their folky stuff, and the only reason people saw them was for their synth pop-hits. However, their folky songs are so bad, namely the whole violin thing, that it actually turned off the audience to the point were most people were leaving before their popular songs were played.
The only disappointing headliner clash was Coldplay vs. Muse, both being successful European rockers. I guess one is lighter rock and one is a more heavier experience, but that being said, its still a close choice.

Well, two caffeine drinks, three toll roads and 8 hours later, I have finally arrived in the good ol' Windy City!

First stop, deal with my wristband issues. Being the idiot that I am, I read all the fine print, except for the key bolded line specifically telling event-goers to put the wristband on their right hand. Guess which hand I put it on?

Yeah.

One hour later in line ... all is settled. Thank God for nice customer service reps.

Took a stroll through Millennium Park, saw some art, has some deep dish pizza. Ready to go. Excited for tomorrow? Oh yeah. More to come!

Oh yeah, and I forgot to say that Lollapalooza was cancelled. I guess they filled the gap with this new festival Lol--Palooza. See for yourself...

Noah & The Whale

Genre: Folk Pop

Lollapalooza Show Time: 2:30-3:15 on the Bud Light stage.

Band Profile: As a part of the recently successful British "Folk" wave, with the likes of Mumford & Sons, Noah & The Whale electrifies folk to create a unique ready-for-radio pop sound. Having just completed their third album, the band has matured from their young-roots into a more developed view of their trade. Already topping the British charts, Noah & The Whale are just waiting to break into America.

Personal Opinion: They've got a really relaxed sound that can really help them break into the charts, a tough feat in the pro-pop atmosphere of today's radio. They've got an interesting sound and have, if they keep it up, a big future ahead of them.

City & Colour

Genre: Folk Rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 3:15-4:15 on the PlayStation stage.

Band Profile: Another name for another band by Canada's Dallas Green, who is known from his solo-work, collaborations, and the hard rocking band Alexisonfire. It makes sense how he divides his songwriting, with the heavy hitters being used in Alexisonfire, the soft solo guitar work for his namesake, and the halfway in-between for City & Colour. (Dallas = city, Green = colour, get it?)

Personal Opinion: As a Canadian myself, I am already pre-deposed to love Dallas Green's work - wherever he goes. Putting that aside, his songs speak for themselves, as all of them are classic in their own rite. I would suggest everyone check him out, and hopefully you can appreciate his talents.

Gold Motel

Genre: Summer Rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 12:15 - 1:00 on the PlayStation stage.

Band Profile: Founded by singer Greta Morgan during the hiatus of her previous band The Hush Sound, Gold Motel brings Cali rock to the table featuring Chicagoans Matt Schuessler, Adam Kaltenhauser, and Eric Hehr. The band recently debuted its first album Summer House and has been touring in support since.

Personal Opinion: These guys give me the impression of a buzzed-up She & Him, which to me is a great combo. I am really impressed with their songwriting - which is a rarity for bands in the "up-and-coming" early festival slots.

The Joy Formidable

Genre: Indie Rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 1:00 - 1:45 on the Bud Light stage.

Band Profile: If you think Ritzy Bryan's voice is a little ... well ... odd, you'd be right, because The Joy Formidable, hailing from North Wales, brings the noise with their buzz guitars, screaming chants and epic sounds. After years of writing for fun, Ritzy and bassist Rhydian Dafydd finally decided to go professional, picking up drummer Matt Thomas and recording their first EP A Balloon Called Moaning. The band has been supporting the album since.

Personal Opinion: Oh the BUZZ. With their big guitars and unique vocals, I really predict that The Joy Formidable will truely become a formidable force for the future of rock (pun intended). Really remind me of Arcade Fire! Good stuff.

Other: Prepare For Music Overload!

Hey guys, how are you all doing this fine weekend?

EDIT: By nothing I meant nothing of Lollapalooza! Haha. Don't fear, I am not leaving you!

As you might have noticed, I post just about every other day. I also wanted to finish my Search For Lollapalooza series, and plan on doing just that. The catch is that I have about 2-3 more installments to go, but only roughly 5 days to do this. After receiving comments from you guys, I got the impression that you preferred spacing out the installments, and while I think that was a good idea, it no longer can happen in my tightly packed schedule.

Therefore, the next few installments will solely cover the series Search For Lollapalooza, so I hope you understand that I would prefer to space them out, but due to time constraints, I must pack 'em in to get 'em in before the festival next weekend!

So how 'bout it? I post solely Lollapalooza up until my wrap up post, (hopefully I can get some pics!) and then after that, NOTHING for a LONG LONG WHILE.

The Drums

Genre: Indie Rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 4:45 - 5:30 on the Google+ stage.

Band Profile: Two best friends and musical partners Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham began their musical careers touring as the electro synth-pop duo Goat Explosion before admitting defeat (due to lackluster success). After moving to Florida, they changed musical directions towards a more guitar-oriented sound, moved to NYC, picked up drummer Connor Hanwick, and blossomed into a cult success.

Personal Opinion: For me, these guys are an off and on love, some of their songs are just gorgeous, while some are, well - not. Maybe they'll grow more on me, but at least it's a start.

My Morning Jacket

Genre: Southern Rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 8:00 - 10:00 on the Bug Light stage.

Band Profile: Forming in Kentucky in 1998, My Morning Jacket began with a country-folk sound, but as the band's success grew, new influences such as electro, pop, rock, soul and just about everything else under the sun. Right now, the band is experiencing the apex of their career, following a MSG run, mainstream popularity, and classic television spots, namely an episode of American Dad dedicated to the band (had to mention it, haha).

Personal Opinion: At this point, if you don't know about MMJ, something is wrong with you. Just amazing things. One of the biggest bands out their right now. Ten, Twenty years down the line, I'll be proud to be able to say, "I went to a MMJ back in their prime".

So, what do you think about these two bands?

Movies: CFotW - Apocalypse Now (1979)

Apocalypse Now

Genre: War, Drama

Director: Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather Trilogy, American Graffiti)

Starring: Martin Sheen (The West Wing), Marlon Brando (The Godfather, On the Waterfront), Robert Duvall (The Godfather, Deep Impact)

Concept: A washed out soldier (Sheen) is sent on a highly dangerous mission during the Vietnam conflict to assassinate a crazed ex-commander (Brando) who has become a godly figure to an up-river tribe.

Boom?

Why You Should Watch:

This film could possibly be best described as the Forrest Gump 'Vietnam section' without the fluff and a lot more realism.
Apocalypse Now is hailed as one of the last great war epics made before the age of digital effects. Every explosion in this film, from the bullet shots to the burning of whole jungles, was actually done in the filming process.
Showcases acting by some of the greats, as Apocalypse Now ended up being a final 'hurrah' for many of these legends.
Has an amazing soundtrack that really captures the age in which the film was made, thankfully before the cringe-worthy movie soundtracks of the 80s.
Great story that you can really throw yourself into. Good laughs, awesome action, and lots of suspense and mystery.

TV: Shows You Need to See #3 - An Idiot Abroad

Show: An Idiot Abroad (2010)

Genre(s): Travel, Comedy, Documentary

Star(s): Karl Pilkington, Steven Merchant, Ricky Gervais

Concept: You've all seen travel shows where some good looking, all-around knowledgeable people go to a location around the world and experience some of the highlights of that region. Now imagine this - a simple minded person (Karl Pilkington) is forced to go to a foreign and sometimes dangerous land, is thrown into the culture against their will, and in turn mandated to complete difficult, horrifying and sometimes disgusting tasks related to the culture by his never seen but terrorizing planners (Steven Merchant and Ricky Gervais) before being allowed to leave.

Number of Episodes: 8 episodes in the first season, with a second season in the works.

Why You Should Watch:

I would say that this series was the first time I truly "got" Ricky Gervais. I had previously tried to get into the UK Office, and Extras, but I never seemed to break into his mind-set. But just going through this series, I think I really got a good grasp on his humor and will definitely go back to his other series.
If you love travel shows, this is literally the best thing you'll see in your life. It will change you outlook on travel shows within the first episode, and will make the old style travel shows seem so ancient and boring.
For fans of the Ricky Gervais podcast, this show is just a visual continuation of the trio after they are given money to spend for fun.
An all around unique show which for all intents and purposes, creates a totally new TV experience by combining travel, documentation, and true comedy in an unusual but awesome collection. You really just need to see it for yourself.

Those keen will recognize Steven Merchant as the voice of Wheatley in Portal 2.

Part 3, let`s go!

GROUPLOVE

Genre: Summer Rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 12:00-12:45 on Saturday at the Sony stage.

Band Profile: Like out of a movie, each band member met during a worldly art school residence in Greece. Two of the members, Christian and Hannah, are from Brooklyn, Sean is from London England, and Andrew and Ryan are from LA. After their residency finished, each went back to their homeland, but realized what an opportunity they had. They then all went to LA to record their first self-titled EP GROUPLOVE.

Personal Opinion: They've got a great start, that's for sure. A solid EP is always a good thing, and that's probably why they've gotten the Lolla invite so early in their career.

Dom

Genre: Eletro Pysch-rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 3:30-4:15 on Saturday at the Google+ stage.

Band Profile: Comprising of four members, Dom is named after the lead singer, Dom, and is accompanied by drummer Bobby, bassist Erik and guitarist Cosmo. Coming from Massachusetts, the band got its break after numerous references in the indie mag Pitchfork.

Personal Opinion: This band is probably the greatest find so far in my Lollapalooza search, as I can't find anything wrong with them. It's just so good. Really excited for this one.

Movies: The Harry Potter Decade

Back in at the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in November 2001, who would've thought that our older selves, ten years down the line, would still be lining up in theaters worldwide with just as much anticipation as before?

It's hard to describe the influence both the Harry Potter movie series and the Harry Potter book series has had on our lives. To many, the books were the gateway to reading adventures, opening paths in life that might have not been there previously. Friends were met, laughs were had, and tears were shed. Then the movies came along, and presented the wonder of J.K. Rowling's epic series to the silver screen, both reinvigorating the young-adult film industry and reigniting reading culture with such ideas like "reading the book before seeing the movie".

So as the release date ticks closer and closer to reality (mere hours I am told), it comes to a sudden realization that this Harry Potter decade is about to end. From 2001 to 2011, there's always been a Harry Potter film to expect. They just don't make series the same. It still amazes me to this day that they, save for the passing of Richard Harris (Dumbledore in the first two films), a character was never once recast, a feat that will most likely never been beaten again in this Hollywood age of "two/three movies and (the actor is) out".

All this said and done, I know that in the end, it always had to end, and with that I can leave the film happy about its accomplishments, and be happy that I was a apart of the Harry Potter generation.

How's everyone doing?
Well, let's get right on to the second installment of TSfL!

Skrillex

Genre: Dubstep/Electro-house

Lollapalooza Show Time: 6:15-7:15 on Friday at Perry's.

Band Profile: Hailing from LA, Sonny Moore, via the alias Skrillex, has bloomed into a household name since the mainstream success of Dubstep in the top40 charts, a genre in which he is seen as a founding father. Using the classic methods as well as new-age promotions such as YouTube, Skrillex has amassed a staggering audience, and has influence on many key modern artists such as Ke$ha, Britney Spears, and the Black Eye Peas with his exploding sound.

Personal Opinion: What's not to love? Skrillex has been taking mainstream dance for a spin (no pun intended) with his energetic approach to mixing, heavy beats, and slick melody. He's definitely going to be a highlight of the festival, and I look forward to catching his set.

Crystal Castles

Genre: Electronic

Lollapalooza Show Time: 7:15-8:15 on Friday at the Sony stage.

Band Profile: Consisting of two members, music man Ethan Kath and singer Alice Glass, this Canadian duo have skyrocketed into the indie-electronic scene with their otherworldly soundscapes. Beginning as only a sound experiment, Kath, without Alice even knowing, began posting clips online of his mixes. When things got serious, Kath reunited with Alice, and from there they've been touring and writing together as Crystal Castle.

Personal Opinion: I'm usually not a fan of "soundscape" styles of electronic, but there's something about Crystal Castles that grabs my interest. Maybe it's the melody, maybe it's just how they view themselves as a band as oppose to a DJ-type thing. I don't know, but whatever it is... I like it!

Music: The Search for Lollapalooza - Pt. 1

I am trying my best to get a post out every other day or so, but sometimes time doesn't work with you!

Anyways, I had mentioned previously that I would be attending this years Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, Illinois from August 5th to 8th, and because of this, I have set a personal goal of checking out each band before the trip to figure out my ideal concert experience.

So, I plan on doing a little series which I will be calling The Search for Lollapalooza, previewing the bands that I find interesting, and hopefully get a good understanding of the festival layout!

Young The Giant

Genre: Light Rock/Folk

Lollapalooza Show Time: 1:00-1:45 on Friday at the Bud Light stage.

Band Profile: Formed in 2004 as The Jakes, this Cali band's "made it" moment happened when they won a contest to open for the King of Leon in 2009 at the Chicago House of Blues, and ever since has been creating buzz through the release of their debut self-titled album and frequent song-drops on MTV and other TV networks.

Personal Opinion: I'm liking their style, but I think they need to bring a bit more energy to the table if they want to become big. As their set is one of the first of the day, I expect them to get a good crowd as the first day of a festival is usually the best day to play an early gig.

The Naked and Famous

Genre: Psych/Future Rock

Lollapalooza Show Time: 1:30-2:15 on Friday at the Sony stage.

Band Profile: A New Zealand band, The Naked and Famous have skyrocketed into the scene, having only recently released their first set of songs and have gained quite a following in such as short time.

Personal Opinion: New bands are always hard to figure out, as they don't have much to judge from, you don't know a lot about them, and you don't even know if they'll be around in a year. But I guess that's the fun part, isn't it? Some people compare these guys to MGMT, and I can see where that comes from. I would just hope that The Naked and Famous can continue to expand their influences and develop a unique path.

TV: Shows You Need to See #2 - Battlestar Galactica

Show: Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

Genre(s): Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Action, with hints of comedic relief (Oddly the same as LOST)

Concept: In an alternative space-faring human history, mankind builds the Cylons, a robotic race, which breaks free of human control and wages war against its creators. After years of system-wide war, a truce is called and the Cylons flee to the other side of the known space. Decades pass with no sign of Cylon existence, so humankind begins to dismantle their armies in the seemingly everlasting peace, but are ambushed in a surprise attack by the Cylon armies. Can humankind survive?

Number of Episodes: 73 episodes over four seasons, as well as multiple mini-series.

Why You Should Watch:

If you ever watched Star Wars, especially the original trilogy, and wished that somehow you could see what it was like to be a part of the rebel resistance, outside of the main Jedi plot, you'll connect with this show, as the premise is roughly the same.
People sometimes get scared away because of the whole "space" thing, and while there are lots of Sci-Fi ship battles and things of that sort, I put this show as one of the best character drama's out there, so don't judge it solely on its overall premise.
Similarly to LOST, this show has a massive backlog of canon and extra information for the people who love to "delve" into a series.
Very unique and inventive story arcs, both short term and long term - There is a plot and they aren't just floating around in space fighting a new enemy every episode like TV's Star Trek.
A very realistic take on space Sci-Fi, no big lasers and super-reflective shields - very gritty space action.

Movies: Transformers Review

It is 5 explosions for every drama-flick twist, or 6?

Well, for this very reason, I want to start off this review by saying that it is impossible to compare certain films with others, and the Michael Bay directed Transformers series is one of them. Therefore, when reviewing Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon, I will simply create a comparison from its two predecessors, Transformers (2007), and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009).

I'll start off saying that T3 is not the best film you have ever seen, but it's also nowhere near the worst. It has its highs and lows, big explosions, action, drama, and romance - everything good in a summer blockbuster, but falters in one critical point, in that the third film in the popular franchise does not have an anchor, or that certain something that keeps the audience grounded among all the movement and plot twists.

In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker still stayed our teenage farm-boy throughout his journey through the stars, and Indiana Jones at heart was still America's quirky professor, but in T3, Shia LeBeouf's Sam Witwicky has all but lost that innocent underdog teenage scoundrel persona of the first film in exchange for his "I'm better then everyone because I'm special" self-opinion and the unrealistic ability to score the hottest girls in the world.

Because of this, we as the viewer no longer care in the same way about Sam, and when the audience doesn't care as much, the film turns from being a world class character adventure coupled with amazing visuals and killer action into a hotbox of robots and destruction.

I will however give credit when credit is due. The film really stepped up in its destruction of Chicago. It truly made the city feel like a battle-zone, and effectively used the landscape to create imaginative battle sequences that are the best yet from the series.

Therefore, in terms of plot, I would put T3 above T2 but below the original, as it still felt like the writers first wrote the best ways to blow things up, and haphazardly threw in connecting story lines, but improved whatever plot the second film did or did not have. However, in terms of action, I would rate T3 as definitely on par, and maybe even better then both T1 and T2, upping the awesomeness with unique and original fight sequences and visually stunning shots that vastly overshadow all the previous films attempts.

Music: British Radio FTW?

Had a scuffle, back now though!

Recently I have been listening to a lot of British radio, and it's really a different scene over there, even in the 'mainstream'. Honestly, unless all you like is dance/bubblegum pop/girl country/90s distortion derivatives (which is what you find over in NA), I would suggest you check out some British radio, you might just like it.

So in honor of this, I will be highlighting three tracks that I've discovered through my new found radio adventures.

Foster The People - "Pumped Up Kicks"

Genre: "Chilled" Groove Rock
Bio: Foster The People are a LA band formed in 2009, and have since been touring in support of their debut album Torches.
My Opinion: I'm really feeling this track. It's really reminiscent of a track you would find on a Gorillaz album, and that always a good thing. Hopefully they can produce some good follow ups and keep it up.

Cee Lo Green - "I Want You (Hold On To Love)"

Genre: Soul-Pop
Bio: Started up rapping with the group Goodie Mob, but moved on to form Gnarls Barkley with producer Danger Mouse. Since disbanding GB, Cee Lo has been touring and promoting his debut solo record The Lady Killer.
My Opinion: Everyone know's Cee Lo from he's epic "F**K You" radio smash, but in NA, that's all that they are playing from him. It's kind of sad when an artist is almost "limited" to his mega-hit, as stations think to themselves - "Why would we play a new song, if we could play THE HIT". So I was very surprised to hear this over the airwaves, which shows you the dedication some of these British stations have to the actual music.

Wolfgang Gartner - "Illmerica"

Genre: Electric-House
Bio: Started off as a Deep-House DJ, but has changed to the more mainstream Electric-House genre as of late. Started off as all DJs do, remixing hits for sets and releasing plenty of EPs every few months. Recently, he's been producing direct collaboration with the likes of DeadMau5 and Will.I.Am, as well as radio play of his solo work.
My Opinion: First off, this is one of the best done music videos I've seen. It's also great to see non-mainstream genres being features on the radio, so that people can experience all the genres and decide if they like it for themselves.

Funny thing is, not only were all three of these tracks were from one station's selection, but they were all from the 7-11am morning show! Imagine turning on your car radio and hearing Illamerica! Haha.

TV: Wilfred - US (2011)

Today I will be discussing the new show Wilfred, starring Elijah Wood (LoTR) and Dorian Brown (Wilfred - AUS), which premiered last Thursday on FX Channel.

Tastes like Wood. Wait... what?

The show, based upon its successful Australian version, revolves around Ryan (Elijah Wood), a recently laid-off lawyer-turned-suicidal house slob, who, in one of his many attempts to kill himself, meets his new (and lovely) next-door neighbor Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), and in a hazed conversation, accepts the role of doggy-babysitter while she is away at work.

It is then that he meets Wilfred (Dorian), and to everyone in the show's world - Wilfred is a dog. That is, except Ryan, who instead sees, interacts, and talks to Wilfred as if he was a grown man in a dog suit.

Hilarity ensues.

Yes, that is a dog drinking beer and smoking a cigarette.

Was Ryan finally successful in killing himself, and this is some weird afterlife? According to Wilfred, the answer is no, and with this premise the show moves forth as Ryan and Wilfred explore the world, and learn new life lessons in the wake of his life collapse.

Thursdays on FX

So far so good. I am really excited what they can pull off with this concept, and hopefully they continue the originality that the premiere contained, because this show is going to be amazing. Definately adding this one to my viewing schedule, and my summer just got a little less boring!

Music: Artist Spotlight - Two Door Cinema Club

Two Door Cinema Club, a young rock band from Ireland, has been receiving tremendous acclaim since breaking into the indie scene this past year.

After forming in 2007 at their British-equivalence of high school, Alex Trimble (vocals, rhyme guitar), Kevin Baird (bass), and Sam Halliday (lead guitar), began writing their first album Tourist History (2010).

Love this video.

Since then, they have been touring in support of their debut (with a hired drummer), performing in such major festivals such as Reading (2010), Leeds (2010), Coachella (2011) and the upcoming Lollapalooza (2011).

Probably my favorite of their tunes.

So far, their biggest hit has been 'Something Good Can Work', grabbing plenty of time on the British charts, and scoring preciously rare airplay for indie rock worldwide. Hope you enjoy:

Movies: CFotW - Office Space (1999)

Genre: Comedy
Director: Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Beavis & Butthead)
Starring: Jennifer Aniston (Friends), Ron Livingston (Swingers), David Hermen (Futurama, King of the Hill)
Concept: A group of young disgruntled office workers deal with their depressing jobs in light of office bureaucracy.

"Uh, I'm going need you to come on Saturday. Yeah."

Why You Should Watch:

One of the few truly unique comedies in the age of remakes and plot derivation.
The film presents fresh faces that allow the viewer to immerse themselves even further into the plot, as it is not filled with the over-used "comedy actors" you see in every damn comedy.
Contains every type of comedy, may it be one-liners, dry humor, situation comedy, and a good swear here and there.
Ages well over the years, with timeless comedy, and jokes that aren't as timeless morph from current-fad jabs to classic nostalgia quips.
Actual character development - a rarity, as most comedies these days sacrifice character development for gimmicks and cliche.
Overall, a good time - a movie you can sit down and watch you parents, your better half, and of course your best buddies.

TV: Game of Thrones Finale

For those of us following Game of Thrones, you will know that the season definitely ended off ... interesting. I've still yet to make up my mind on if the show's first season ended off as successful as it began, but I can say that the writers definitively tried to shake things up!

Season One Finale Spoilers: You've Been Warned!

As fans will remember, in the second to last episode of Game of Thrones titled "Baelor", our hero and apparent lead Ned Stark, played by Sean Bean (LoTR), was unexpectedly and gruesomely beheaded in a twist that only those who read the book could expect. This feat brought controversy left and right for the show, as many fans

publicly protested the move; as can be seen from this hilariously

accurate portrayal by Downfall's Hitler:

This brings us to the series finale"Fire and Blood", which, after watching, can be seen as an episode that's main goal is to set up all the plot lines for next season's story. If the next season was coming in September or October, I would have probably enjoyed this episode more then I believe I have, as opposed to its scheduled Spring 2012 release. This is because I felt that there was too much setting up taking place, and not enough closure on the major plot lines from the first season.

As the writers are almost directly adapting the series from the books, they are forced to abide by the book's pacing, and because the book was written in a way that Book 1 (Season 1) and Book 2 (Season 2) should be considered simply part 1 and 2 of a much larger book, there are no conclusions at the end of book 1, and in turn, no real conclusions in the TV series.

I guess it comes with the turf, but because of this issue, I felt that the finale was one of the more weaker episodes in the first season. Joffrey bringing Sansa to see her father's head - We already know she's angry. Robb Stark learning of his father's death - definitely

necessary but expected. The Lannister army retreating - Kind of a disappointment, you'd think there would be some sort of epic battle. The wise old man lord dude goes to the brothel and is really flexible - Rather not have seen that.

I would say that there were three highlights in the episodes, that of Arya 'becoming' a boy to escape north, the Nightwatch going on the offensive, and finally the Drogo burning scene and the birth of the dragon brood.

All in all, a decent end to a great show. Hopefully the creators keep the quality up in the second season, and that the wait is not too long.

Music: Clarence Clemons Dead At 69

Sad news today in the world of music, as famed Saxophonist
Clarence "Big Man" Clemens, most well know for his work as a founding member of the E Street Band and key influence on Bruce Springsteen, passed away today due to complications from a stroke.

Clemons faced many health struggles at the closing of his life, multiple health scares, hip surgery, and a massive stroke a week prior to his passing.

However, he remained active in his craft in his late years, most notably in Lady Gaga's newest album Born This Way, collaborating with her on tracks "Hair", "Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)", and her most recent single, "Edge of Glory".

In honour of his passing, here's the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band classic "Born to Run" featuring Clemons on his Sax.

Music: Lou Reed + Metallica = Win?

The fine people in Metallica revealed yesterday that they have completed an album with legendary musician and rock icon Lou Reed.

Lou Reed, founding member and lead songwriter of the influential The Velvet Underground (check out my previous article on them here), and weathered solo artist, has created such classics like "A Walk on the Wild Side", "Heroin", "Berlin", and the first album totally created from white noise and loud sound samples, aptly named Metal Machine Music.

Audio has yet to be released from the album, but I would expect the sound to lie closer to Load-era Metallica, more so heavy classic rock then the band's early thrash sound or the latest Metallica record Death Magnetic.

The best I can give in regards to what the album might sound like would be this joint performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert, where Metallica backed Lou in a rendition of his Velvet Underground songs "White Light/White Heat" and "Sweet Jane". I would say the WL/WH performance was the better job, but as there aren't many quality copies available, here's the Sweet Jane performance.

I was unsure if I was going to comment on achieving 200

TV: Shows You Need to See #1 - LOST

An idea came to me, just because the TV season is done, doesn't mean there is no more TV! Therefore, I am starting up a series called Shows You Need to See (SYNS), where I will preview a classic TV series, and why you need to see it!

The first in this series will be about LOST, so I hope you enjoy.

Show: Lost (2004-2010)

Genre(s): Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Action, with hints of comedic relief

Concept: Stranded on a seemingly deserted island, the crash survivors must band together if they want to live.

Number of Episodes: 116 over six seasons

Why You Should Watch:

The show is character-driven, allowing you to invest in every single character, as you progressively learn and understand each characters, past, present, and future, and how each of their paths aren't as random as you would believe.
The show covers many genres successfully, and never promotes one genre at the expense of another, as each aspect of the show is respected and honed to perfection, from the lovers of films such as Cast Away, 24 action-junkies, CSI mystery lovers, and everything between.
The audience is always respected, as the writers wrote the show for an intelligent audience, and the show was written without outside industry pressures such as show cancellation, cross-promotion, rating grabs, etc.
The show rewards both the marathon viewings, for those of us who "just can't wait", as well as the long-term viewers who only can watch an episode here and there. One of the very few shows that can still reward the 'once a week' crowd even after the show is finished.
Has an invested lore-based universe that deals with canon issues very successfully, in that those who watch the show will never feel "lost" (no pun intended) if they don't read more into the show, while those who have the time can theorize and study the world for all that it has to offer.

I don't know what more I can say but to really consider watching this show, because it really is a rewarding experience. Here's the first episode, Pilot #1's TV promo (best quality I could find):
