Big Challenge Residential Two 04/12/09

This residential was my first chance to meet the Big Challenge prize winners and to learn more about their projects. There are a good range of projects from across the UK and all of them were very inspiring.
As part of the YLT i have to support one of the prize winners and help them with their project over the next few months. Over the weekend I learnt new skills to help me do this including PR and Campaigning. The project I'm supporting is called Culture Flash and is being run by Rich McEachron. GraduateOn Course 4/11/2009

This course is designed to help graduates that are looking for work around Sussex. Sessions run over three days and help you set up a clear plan for the future and work your CV and and interview skills. Although I felt confident in some of these areas already it was good to learn some new skills and to network with other graduates and people who can help me in finding a placement. Event Planning for the Big Challenge 14/09/09

I have spent the past few weeks planning for the above event. We hope to attract 16-25 year olds to a fun filled evening on the 18th September so that we can promote the Big Challenge by encouraging people to apply on the website with ideas of how they can benefit their community. Prize winners receive funding and support to help them get started.

Andi Watson - Radiohead Lighting 30/08/09

The lighting used for the radio head tour this year was phenomenal. It reminded me of work i have seen by United Visual Artists and fascinated me for the duration of the show. My research shows that it was designed by Andi Watson; i can find little about him so am hoping to see more of his work in the future.

Cup Collecting Scheme 28/08/09

This scheme is an innovative and extremely effective solution to littering used at events such as Reading and Leeds festivals. The basic concept is that 10p extra is charged when you purchase a drink as a deposit for the cup or bottle and this can be refunded at various refund points. Although many people still leave their cups on the floor, some people quickly clock on the the fact that 10 cups = £1.00 and 100 cups is a teener! Effectively this means that the event organisers get litter pickers for free, genius.

Paris, Madrid and Kandinsky 25/07/09-06/08/09

My trip to Paris and Madrid was full of encounters with art and design, whist shopping, eating, walking and at big galleries like the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and the Prado museum in Madrid. My favorite of the exhibitions i saw was a Kandinsky exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This showed his paintings chronologically from 1907 to 1942. As you travel though the rooms this method of displaying the work communicates the way in which his he developed with time and i found myself enjoying the paintings more and more as saw the way he experimented more with different compositions materials and formats. http://www.centrepompidou.fr/

Cathedrale D'Images - Picasso 12/07/09

This exhibition venue is very different to most and uses projectors to display work across the walls of a vast cave in the south of France. The designers of the exhibition did an amazing job of using the space to create a dramatic moving display of the legendary Pablo Picasso's work.
Walking thought the cave you are surrounded by huge images of the work covering each wall. The projectors work in sync with each other and the music to create a performance showing the different progressions of Picasso's work thought his life. I highly recommend experiencing this inspirational place.

Arles Photogaphy Festival 07/07/09

In 2008 I visited the photography festival in Arles, France, for the first time and was amazed by the volume and diversity of the exhibitions.
This years exhibition was even bigger and although i felt that there was less diversity, there was wealth of inspirational concepts and photographs. The work of Eugene Richards stood out with a collection of photographs taken at old abandoned houses in remote parts of America. These photos were successful because they showed an insight into the lives of the families who once lived there and revealing what lies within the deserted houses that may often be considered scary by passers by.

D&AD New Blood 30/06/09

My visit to the New Blood D&AD exhibition gave me a great overview of the other designers also graduating this year with an estimated 2000 exhibiting. There was so many inspirational projects and it was hard to take them all in. The AIB Graphic Design work looked great and there was lots of great feedback about our work, including an award for best stand. http://newblood.dandad.org/

In Three Words Show Opening 16/06/09

After a long day of laying out and sticking our show opened in the evening of the 16th. The work looked great and the post card concept and categories really helped the overall success of the exhibition design. I am looking forward to the work going up at the D&AD New Blood exhibition at the end of the month.

EMP - Project Development

Since the completion of my Extended Major Project I have been considering how I can continue with the project testing the designs and completing a set of lessons. I have met some helpful contacts through Uni and the Big Challenge, Youth Leadership team, that may be able to help with Testing, Funding and Implementation. I have been able to talk to these people about how i would be able to get the project off the ground and in place in schools. This development has been exiting and i'm looking forward to working with new people and taking the project further.

My exiting role as part of the youth leadership team 09 started on friday the 11th. It was the start of an inspirational and motivating weekend, which included choosing and theme for the big challenge 09.
