84-year-old woman stabbed to death in Pembrokeshire

The 84-year-old woman found stabbed to death at a house in the Templeton area of Pembrokeshire has been named by police.

The body of Margaret Ford was found by officers and Detectives are continuing to question a man, originally said to be 42 but who police now say is 48, arrested in connection with the woman's death on Saturday evening.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it was a domestic-related incident and they were not looking for any other suspects.

St Davids targeted by Gardening scam

Dyfed-Powys Police are warning people in Pembrokeshire to be on their guard against bogus traders.“We are asking people to ensure their elderly relatives and friends are aware to be wary of people selling items or claiming to carry out work on their homes".

Police have received reports of people charging extortionate amounts for carrying out gardening work in the St Davids area.

St. Ishmael’s girl falls 70 ft on Lindsway Cliffs

A young lady (approx 19yrs old) from St. Ishmaels, is in Withybush Hospital this morning with serious injuries (assessed by para medics as pelvic, abdominal, spine and ankle) after falling 70 ft down the steps and cliff leading to Lindsway Beach, St. Ishmaels at approx. 11.40pm 1st April.

The alarm was raised with the Coastguard Operations Room at Milford Haven and immediately the Coastguard Rescue Teams from Dale and Broad Haven were alerted and tasked. The RNLI Inshore Lifeboat from Angle was also requested to stand off the bottom of the cliffs, Once on scene Coastguards and Paramedics from the Ambulance Service made their way down the cliffs and steps to where the injured girl lay. The Rescue Helicopter from Chivenor was also requested to attend. The girl was stabilised and, because the Helicopter had been diverted to a more serious incident in Swansea, she was placed on a spinal board and carried by the Coastguard Teams to the top of the cliffs. By this time the Rescue Helicopter had been released from Swansea and had landed near the cliff top. The injured girl was placed into the helicopter and taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Withybush for treatment.

Energy firm to compensate customers

Energy firm Scottish Power has announced plans to compensate customers who overpay through having their monthly direct debits set too high.

From the beginning of June, the company will automatically pay back £1 for every £33 that customers are in credit by at the time of their annual direct debit reassessment.

The refund, which is equivalent to paying interest of around 3%, will be paid to people who have balances of more than £100, up to a maximum of £5,002.

Busy Weekend for Cardigan RNLI Lifeboats

The RNLI Lifeboats from Cardigan were kept busy over the weekend when they were called to assist 3 different fishing vessels in difficulties off Cardigan.

The first incident happened at approx 1.20pm on 20th March when the ILB went to the assistance of the local fishing boat ‘Three Brothers’ with 2 locals on board, after flares were sighted off Cardigan Island. The boat had gear box problems and was towed safely back to the moorings in the River Teifi. Both Gwbert and Penrhyn Coastguard rescue Teams attended the local headlands for communication links.

Cardigan RNLI Inshore Lifeboat was called at 3.20pm 21st March to assist the local fishing vessel ‘Westral Warrior’ with 2 persons on board having suffered a fouled propeller in the Cardigan Estuary. The obstruction was cleared and the vessel made its way back to her moorings. Gwbert Coastguard Rescue Team gave communications assistance.

Finally, at approx. 1.45pm on 22nd March, the Cardigan RNLI Atlantic Lifeboat was tasked to assist the local fishing vessel ‘Avondale’ with 3 persons on board after she reported to Coastguards at Milford Haven that her engine had over heated off Cemaes Head. The vessel was towed back to safety and her moorings. Gwbert Coastguards provided communication links.

Energy supplier Scottish Power has become the latest firm to cut gas and electricity prices.

The company, which has 5.2 million customers, is cutting average gas bills by 7.5% and electricity prices by 3% from March 31.

The move leaves only npower left among the the UK's "big six" energy suppliers yet to cut prices.
The average "dual fuel" customer taking both gas and electricity from the firm and paying by direct debit will see their annual bill fall by £54 to £1,156, Scottish Power said.

4.2% increase in Pembrokeshire council Tax

Council tax increase approved, Pembrokeshire residents will see an increase in council tax this year, full council agreed today

An increase of 4.2% was agreed by the Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet earlier this month and this was ratified by the majority of councillors this morning.

The increase equates to a £26.81 increase on last year.

Smokers are putting their lives and families at risk

Welsh smokers are putting their lives and families at risk by not putting out cigarettes safely, according to the fire safety charity Firebrake Wales.

Last year in Wales, 13 people died and 10 a month were injured in smoking-related home fires. Many fires happen at night when people fall asleep or smoke in bed and furniture or fabrics are set alight.

Worryingly, research shows that smokers are less likely than non-smokers to have working smoke alarms which could alert them to the dangers and give the chance of escape.

"It is vital to make sure all smoking materials are put out safely, especially before bed time," according to Kim Smith, CEO of Firebrake Wales. "The best way to cut the risk is not to smoke indoors at all."

The Fire and Rescue Services in Wales recommend that homes have a working smoke alarm on each floor and that these are tested once a week.

Number of Caravans destroyed by fire near Tenby

Four fire crews from Tenby, Pembroke Dock and Narberth were mobilised to Kiln Park Holiday site, Tenby at 1923hrs on Sunday 4th January 2009. Approximately, 14 unoccupied residential caravans were destroyed by fire.

Firefighters used three jets, four breathing apparatus sets and a water bowser. The operations were completed at midnight, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. The fire is being treated as a scene of crime and a joint investigation is currently being undertaken by the Fire Service and the Police to identify how the fire started.

£500 reward for information on arson attacks on cars in Tenby Pembrokeshire

A £500 reward is being offered for information on who is behind a series of arson attacks on cars in a popular seaside town.

Police in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, are linking seven fires in the last week. No items were taken from any of the vehicles set alight.

The incidents happened in Lamack Vale, Oakridge Acres, Knowling Mead, Marsh Road and Tudor Way.

Police said they were increasing patrols in the area.

Detectives added that the reward would be paid for information leading to the arrest and conviction of offenders.

Pembrokeshire residents recycle your Christmas trees

Pembrokeshire residents are being urged to recycle their Christmas trees once the festivities are over.

Pembrokeshire County Council has teamed up with the Pembrokeshire Machinery Ring to hold free tree-shredding sessions in communities across the County in January.

It is estimated that an extra 30% extra waste is produced at this time of year.

As well as shredding real trees and their woody trimmings, waste staff say fruit and vegetable peelings can also go in compost bins, along with cardboard egg boxes, tea bags, coffee grounds, crumpled card and newspapers.

However, leftover cooked food should not be included.

Tree/trimming shredding sessions are taking place at the following venues:

Hairspray Hazard for Christmas Trees

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are aware that a recent radio programme recommended the use of hairspray to reduce needle loss from real Christmas Trees.

Station Manager Gary Williams of the Community Fire Safety Department is urging the public not to spray their Christmas Tree with any form of hair product as this could increase the risk of a fire occurring as well as the severity.

Real Christmas Trees are an important part of the Christmas celebrations but there are steps which people can take to make sure they have a safe Christmas.

1. Buy a tree from a reputable dealer.

2. The Norway Spruce is the ?traditional tree? but the Nordman Fir is also available which has better needle retention.

3. The only way to reduce needle loss is to cut the bottom off the tree and stand in a water container for at least 24 hours.

4. Select a location for the tree carefully - avoid fireplaces, heating vents and any heat producing appliances that will dry out the tree.

5. Mount the tree in a stand containing water which will keep the tree fresh and green whilst reducing the risk of fire.

6. Do not use candles near the tree and ensure that if presents are stored beneath the tree, they are away from ignition sources.

7. Ensure that fairy lights are checked prior to fitting and are in good condition.

During Christmas festivities there is a potential for increased risk of fire, due to the increase in numbers of visitors in the home, alcohol consumption and cooking activities.

Members of the public should check their smoke detectors to ensure they are working and should not remove batteries for use in presents.
