Oh, I Think I Was Raped

2026-10-09T17:39:44.398+05:30

We have been hearing about the Cornell (University) 7 - the frat boys who gangraped a Jane Doe on Oct 19, 2024.

There have been 2 points of view along gender lines. One group believing that it was awful that the fraternity boys took turn violating her for hours when she was intoxicated. Some guys even invited others to join in, as though she was an edible thing being distributed. This was pathetic animal behaviour.

The second group points out two things.

A) That if women cannot take responsibility for having consented while drunk, how can men be responsible for violating a woman when they, men, were drunk?

B) How is it that Jane Doe's testimony initially was that it was all consensual and she later (after being disinvited to a Halloween party by the fraternity) said that 90% of all that happened that night was non-consensual? What gives.. Read this.

Both views make sense. This post primarily addresses the second group. Why did Jane Doe's testimony change?

I was thinking about the Bhopal gas tragedy that occurred a few decades ago in the central Indian city of Bhopal. Poisonous gas fumes leaked from the factory of Union Carbide, an American company, and killed thousands of people residing near the Carbide factory.

India is a developing country. At that time about 40 years ago it was a poor country. Compensation for deaths at that time may have been of the order of about $1000 per person. Indians were used to a paltry sum as compensation unlike the amounts paid out in the USA.

When Indian government realized that the payout could be much larger than $1000 per person they left the initial baseline figure and caught on to a higher number that was, say, $1 million per dead person.

Now let's ask the question. Initially India was asking for a small amount per casualty because that was the norm in India. But when perhaps a sister pointed out that there is a different legal remedy which India could be entitled to, did India say "Nah, we don't want that million dollars per death" or did India say "Yes, that's what we want. It's legal too".

Now, a question to the second group. If you were representing India in the Bhopal gas tragedy case against Union Carbide. What would you claim finally even if you initially were quite comfortable with a different (much smaller) number?

Now tell me. What's wrong with Jane Doe's thoughts? If the legal system gives her a chance to say "No, I think it was not consensual because even if I may have said Yes initially, I said so in my drunken state and hence the YES doesn't count.

Continuing further, let's see if the same principle can apply in matrimonial / divorce cases in India.

in India where women claim to have faced domestic violence and demand alimony the same principle above could apply. If I, the wife, believe that I may have been subjected to violence and that I could be legally entitled to a large alimony, why would I settle for anything else?

Isn't the question "Was i subject to domestic violence?" similar to "Was I raped?". There is a lot of subjectivity in each question. And if the answer can be yes, then there can be a mighty payback at the end. Why wouldn't I try to claim it?

There are 2 beneficial outcomes.

1. You claim more benefits. Maybe you will get some bonus.

2. You have added one more case to the list of abuses against your gender, caste etc.

By doing this we have diluted the importance of the genuine cases. Even those might now seem made up.

Pointing out or accepting a plausible explanation that absolves / empowers / enriches you while destroying a perceived enemy seems like a great ploy and very rewarding emotionally. Read the stories given in additional reading below.

And this. A couple was in a consensual relationship for 3 years. Later the man didn't marry her. She filed a rape case against her partner. If legally you are allowed to file such a case, why wouldn't you?
Trump is better.- Just like people were pointed to Joe Biden for all the problems in their life, perhaps Jane Doe was pointed to the 7 man target in the last couple of years.

Can't You Take A Few More Steps

2025-09-01T18:47:00.001+05:30

Recently a friend of mine asked his sister whether she couldn't take a few steps to help him out. It happens that she had done plenty for him in the past.

I was reminded of a scene in the old Tamil movie Sumai Thangi where L Vijayalakshmi tells her brother Gemini Ganesan, the hero of the movie, that he has done so much for her in the past. When I thought she would then consider repaying him, she requests her brother to do her one more favor.

This idea of asking one more favor after many or taking a few more steps after many is something i haven't been able to digest. It comes easily to some people, especially to people who are generally very empathetic!

Children Want It. (I don't)

2025-09-01T13:53:00.008+05:30

I was watching a reel today. It shows a mom telling dad that it's mother's day and that the children, two young boys, want to present an expensive necklace to the mother. The father is convinced by everyone, much to his irritation, that he has to go to the mall to purchase the necklace that the boys want to present to their mom on mother's day. Of course the mother is doing it all for the boys, not for herself.

This reminded me of a discussion i had with a female friend who was a Hindi teacher. She told me one day that that particular year was very hard on her then seven year old daughter and she had been telling her husband to take them all to a nice hill station, Kodaikanal, for the summer.

I told her it was expensive to go to and stay in Kodaikanal and asked her if it was really necessary. She said it was absolutely. The child really needed a break.

I suggested that her husband could take her daughter to Kodaikanal and she could stay home instead, considering that it was the daughter who badly needed a break and that she herself, just like the mother in the reel above, wasn't keen about it for herself.

Guess what my friend's reaction was to my suggestion that husband and child could go without her. "A ha ha ha, why should I not go?"

Whether it's a necklace or Kodaikanal or maintenance for the child in their custody, they can make a good case for "it's not for me at all, it's for..." Now the final question over which i have lost all my hair: At what age do women learn to project their own needs on somone else?

Being In Someone's Shoes

2025-05-29T19:25:00.002+05:30

I am back here after a long break. Many things happened in those years. I have changed a little i guess in those years. Maybe I will write about events that happened then.

Now let's come to today's post!

A friend of mine lost her family, consisting of her parents and a brother, one by one. She was the only earning member in her family. Some acquaintance of hers remarked to her (my friend's) employer that my friend had gone through a very difficult time and managed it pretty well.

To this the boss responded that anyone in my friend's position could and would have done the same thing. And hence there was nothing remarkable in what my friend did.

Probably true what the boss lady said. Anyone who went through the same circumstances as my friend perhaps would have done the same thing. And maybe what my friend did wasn't remarkable.

Just as anyone in Sachin Tendulkar's shoes would have achieved what he did. Anyone in Mahatma Gandhi's shoes would have done what he did. Anyone in Bill Gates's or Jeff Bezos' shoes would have done exactly what they did

No big deal.

I have a question here for the boss. What is a big deal?

Whom Do We Trust

2024-09-29T10:07:00.003+05:30

I came across this: APNews being the trusted source of news for half the world.

And there is Truth Social which also is read and trusted by half of America, the Republicans. Truth Social is Trump's own Twitter like platform.

Are APNews and Truth Social at the same level and alike then? Imagine if the CEO of AP News and Trump were both invited to be felicitated for adhering to the highest standards of truth!

I am reminded of a comedy scene in a Tamil movie where a beggar, waiting for some money from a vegetable shop owner, finds himself standing next to a police constable who has come to the shop for hafta ("wet his beak" in Mafia terms) - both of them being shooed away by the shop keeper who is busy attending to his paying customers!

Having half the world read your news or listen to you is hardly a great thing. Truth Social does that too. I wish APNews would try to differentiate itself from Truth social.

I can think anything that may not be true. And I can say untruths because I have a right to freedom of speech.

Based on that thought and words of mine I can allege anything. And incite others with my words to take any action, even illegal ones.

If people claim what I said was wrong and that my actions of incitement to violence was wrong, I can claim that I acted on advice of my counsel.

I do not recognise the concept of right or wrong. A man's purpose is to win. Losing is not an option.

I am not accountable for any words or actions of mine. I will continue to fight until I get what I want.

Beautiful Thought and Beautiful Emotion

2023-05-18T12:36:00.006+05:30

I was thinking of the difference between a beautiful emotion and a beautiful thought.

This is a Beautiful jathi someone choreographed. Look how it is.

Now this is an Excel sheet i choreographed.

See how beautiful it is.

What is the learning here?

An emotion is exceptional if it moves your heart.

A thought is exceptional if it serves a purpose, solves a problem. The sheet above may be an Excel jathi but not a useful one.

An expression of emotion can be beautiful. A thought is never beautiful. That's not the purpose of a thought.

If a thought seems beautiful, it was actually an emotion.

A person strong in emotions can create beauty and elegance. A person strong in thought cannot.

Evaluating A Dance

2023-04-01T20:34:00.004+05:30

These are videos of classical dances. Both are youngsters, informally dressed.

And I watched each video twice: once with audio on and once without audio.

I think this is essential.

We should evaluate a singer without looking at what she is wearing, what she is emoting, how she looks etc. This is in stark contrast to the opinion espoused by the author here. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/apr/19/fashion-fabrics-and-fishtails-why-we-need-to-talk-about-what-female-classical-performers-wear#comment-155980075

In the same way while evaluating a dance as shown in the videos at the top, it is essential that the person be wearing ordinary dress and that we switch off the audio and experience the dance. So our response is only for the quality of the dance. And not distorted by a good audio or by good dress or good stage effects.

Look at these two dances with and without audio and see how they are.

Solving Wordle

2023-01-31T19:32:00.012+05:30

The 2nd word choice is interesting. The last letter after N can be Y, K, D, T, O (RHYNO). So I chose DORKY.

The solution might have K at the end. Possible words are BREAK, BLEAK, FREAK, WREAK. So I chose FRILL.

This again is another nice one.

L, P, H are letters that can follow the starting S. Hence ALEPH. Sure enough it was solved in 3 attempts!

The most interesting step in this was the 4th. At the end of the 3rd step I had E yellow in 2 steps. I didn't know whether the solution had two Es or one. The 4th guess made the solution within grasp.

Man Is Defined By Questions

2023-01-29T12:11:00.006+05:30

I used to think that man is defined by what he has understood in life, by what answers he has arrived at to questions.

Today I realised something else. That man is defined more by the questions that drive him than by the answers he has arrived at.

The answers decide what he does transactionally. The questions he has decide what he ponders about and spends his quest on.

Does every man spend time thinking about questions other than whether his car will start in the morning and whether it's ok to add eggs in tomato fry? I don't know. This post is about those that do.

Sometimes the filter doesn't work in Google sheets in Android. On clicking the inverted triangle icon filter, nothing is displayed. I don't know why it happens.

Here is a simple workaround.

Take a copy of file before starting

Create new sheet in the original file
Create working filter
Copy few rows and confirm working filter
Change references to new sheet and confirm vlookup in referencing sheet is working
Copy rest of rows to new sheet and modify references in referencing sheet to new sheet
Delete old sheet where filter is not working
Rename new sheet
Confirm everything ok

Soon Their Marriage Unraveled, Emotional Expression

They Poured Their Savings Into Homes That Were Never Built

This is an article about how thousands of Chinese made down payments for their houses but they never got possession of their apartments.

This post isn't about real estate issues in China. It's about communication, Sophisticated communication. Read the last line in the blocked text in the image above which is taken from the same NY Times article mentioned at the top.

"Even their marriage unraveled" - I fail to see how that's relevant to the real estate issue being discussed. Bringing very poignant things not directly germane to the main issue seems kosher when we are emotional. And when we want to create a bigger impact on our audience.

Some of us wouldn't know that this is allowed and wouldn't know how to bring up marriage problems in an article on real estate issues. But those that do know have an edge over those who don't!

Can a husband tell his wife "the breakfast yesterday was burnt and my presentation to the customer yesterday went bust"?

Wordle And Dumb Charades

2023-01-17T08:27:00.008+05:30

Dumb Charades (DS) and wordle are both popular games.

Both are guessing games. In DS you have to guess the name of something (a movie typically) and in wordle, a 5 letter word. The former is limited by time (so many minutes allowed to come up with the right answer) and latter by number of attempts (6).

The solution is DS can consist of multiple words (as in the name of a movie "Maid in Manhattan")) while the solution in wordle is always a single 5 letter word.

In both games the other party (another team) responds to your guesses in terms of how close or far you are from the answer. The response in DS is a little subjective while in wordle the response is more structured in terms of yellows and greens. DS also has a GREEN, YELLOW, GREY kinda response system.

Though wordle is typically a solo game it can very well be a two player game, though with only one people on each team. DS usually has more than 1 player on each side.

In both games the player converges to a solution, from having no clue about it initially to making large jumps towards the solution with each guess.

In both games the ingenuity of the guesses is a major factor.

Both games are intellectual (despite wordle needing a paper and a pencil or a web page) unlike video games.

Both are quite addictive!

My Personal Worldle Copy

2022-12-12T18:15:00.014+05:30

I created my personal copy of wordle. Basically it's the same as the original one except that I can play multiple times in a day. And it's a single user version. I have a streak that's 100+ days long.

It started off with me trying to figure out the best starting word. I wasn't happy with ADIEU, LEAST etc. Knowing that A or E is yellow doesn't really help me. A GREEN helps a lot more than a YELLOW.

Apparently a paper authored by researchers at MIT says that the best starting word is SALET. My own favourite was SLATE. Though both have the same set of 5 letters one of them could be better than tha other since the letter order could change a yellow to a green or vice versa.

And I was more into trying to find out whether the solution has letters like F, L, C, P etc which are less frequent. Knowing that the solution has these rarer words is a lot of help even if they are less likely to be there in the solution than knowing that the solution has E, S, A etc.

Ideally one should be able to solve a wordle in 3 steps or guesses. Solving in 1 or even 2 steps is sheer luck. With my starting words I still take 4 guesses, so it's not a great way!.

Coming to my personal wordle, Cell F15 throws up a random number which I use and enter in cell F2 to pick out a 5 letter word (either from past solutions or from my master list of 5 letter words depending on whether the value in cell G2 is 1 or 2).

Column R is where I enter my guesses. Column O tells me whether the guess is ok or Bad. "Bad" is when a wrong letter is used or a letter is placed in a wrong position. For example, if I know that F isn't there in the solution and I use F in a subsequent step then the rule engine would display "Bad". If everything is fine, OK is displayed. There are a bunch of standard rules built into the rule engine. I handle issues with multiple occurrences of a letter.

I then decide whether to change the guess or go ahead with the current guess. I do the latter by typing Y in column Q. Once I type Y, my guess is processed and then color coded in columns H-L as well as in the "keyboard" below. The keyboard is display only. You can't use it to type unlike in the NYT website.

Cells BE3-BI8 tell me, for each letter in the guess, how many other words can be formed having all other letters the same. For example in LUNCH, for L I enumerate how many words such as BUNCH, HUNCH exist in the master list.

In cells BK3-BO8, I show how often a letter in the guess comes in that position. For example, L occurs 15% times in the 1st position among all words having L.

Once the guess is entered, I set all the GREEN, YELLOW and GREY letters in cells BE10 to BI14. Cell R13 tells me how many words match these conditions. Smaller the number, closer I am to the solution!. Cell R13 gives the result set in % form.

If I am guessing a word outside of my spreadsheet (for example, i am playing in a different site) and I know some GREEN, YELLOW, GREY data for the word, I enter those letters in cells BK11-BO11 (GREEN here). The yellow letters and grey letters are entered in cells BK16, BL16, respectively. I also set the value in cell in BJ10 to 2 to inform my spreadsheet that GREEN, YELLOW, GREY data is not to be determined based on internal solution but that these days are entered manually. Cells Q13, R13 give me an indication of the % and number of words in my master list that match the criteria.

The icing on the cake are the cells BM16, BN16. If I enter a value 1 in BM16, cell BN16 will display the 1st word in the internal dictionary which exactly matches the GREEN, YELLOW GREY letters entered (if playing on an external site) or determined (if playing within the spreadsheet with the spreadsheet choosing a random word). If I enter 2 in BM16, the next cell will display the 2nd word that matches the criteria.

Cell BO18 is a check number for internal purpose.

Since the solution is picked at random and since there are hundreds of words in the master list to pick from I really don't know which word is the solution in the current game. This ensures fun!

In the final version, i incorporated the ability to arrive at the guesses and ultimately the solution by just entering the GYG details of each guess. A bit of a triumph!

It might have been better had the gentleman brought up the issue after he had responded to the Indian's questions. The high commissioner managed pretty well.

Trump & his presidency

Two Presidents, Two Special Counsels: Classified documents.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the Queen of Having It Both Ways: Quote: "“I don’t think we’ll ever know the depths of how much fraud existed,” she said, according to The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, adding: “We know there is fraud in every election. How far and wide it went, I don’t think that will be something that will be ever determined.”" Art of alleging something which is not exactly libel. Something she might have learnt from Trump.

On appeal, Trump will likely argue that Section 3 doesn’t apply to the office of the presidency, since it refers to other federal roles, including members of Congress and electors, as well as to “officers of the United States,” but not specifically to the president. Last month, a trial court judge in Colorado agreed with that argument by Trump.. Now see this:A Colorado judge on Friday found that former President Donald Trump engaged in insurrection during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol but rejected an effort to keep him off the state’s primary ballot because it’s unclear whether a Civil War-era Constitutional amendment barring insurrectionists from public office applies to the presidency.

Did Trump commit a crime in hush money payment: "In other words, the apparent theory here is not that Trump broke the law by coordinating with Cohen to buy Daniels’s story. It is, apparently, that Trump broke the law by reimbursing Cohen with payments recorded as retainer payments, a violation that is a felony because that false recording was meant to cover up a conspiracy aimed at promoting Trump’s election by violating federal election law."

Fox News & Dominion

Dominion vs Fox
Fox to Pay $787.5 Million to Settle Dominion’s Defamation Lawsuit: "The parties engaged a mediator from dispute-resolution provider JAMS, Jerry Roscoe, who was on vacation in Romania and worked over the course of a day to bring about a deal Tuesday afternoon."
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/04/fox-news-lost-lawsuit-won-war/673760/: "The last-minute sprint to settlement suggests that the company really did not want to put its stars or its executive chairman, Rupert Murdoch, on a witness stand in court. But for Fox, the nine-figure payout has turned out to be the cost of doing business and guaranteeing the network’s existence."

Schadenfreude

2022-12-03T16:23:00.002+05:30

This is from Psychos in the C-Suite. I was discussing this article, specifically the highlighted portion with a friend.

Friend: This is interesting. According to this, having a conscience can still lead to wrong judgements. I thought having a conscience makes you do the right things. I equated conscience with righteousness until now. Clearly not. Following on from this, did Krishna have a conscience when he persuaded the Pandavas to wage war against the Kauravas? Furthermore, he played a lot of tricks to help the Pandavas win the war against evil. This would suggest Krishna had a "lesser conscience". The article says we have to form a conscience from "God's" values. But if Lord Krishna himself had a "different or lesser conscience", what do we do?All rather complicated I'm afraid. Is schadenfreude wrong or a bad thing if it is purely because someone else is paying for the wrongdoings he or she has done? I would say schadenfreude is neither good or bad. Just that evil people have to reap the consequences of their actions.

Me: Well I don't disagree with you. Sorry for the double negative. Schadenfreude has 2 different aspects

1. To enjoy seeing someone suffer. This sounds awful

2. To enjoy seeing someone reaping what they sowed. This might seem more positive.

While I love to think that the two are distinctly different, I am not sure the distinction between the two is entirely unambiguous

What Putin, Xi Want

2022-11-13T16:23:00.004+05:30

https://apnews.com/article/taiwan-biden-indonesia-united-states-xi-jinping-3decd48c4d2e01da0008d5148237b28d?utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=TopNews&utm_campaign=position_04

So un-Ayn Rand like. It's not money or business or economics only that drives the end result. It's "my country is great" emotion. Whether MAGA (Make America Great Again) or MACA / MARA (Make China / Russia great again)!

What are we doing while trying to make our country great again? Taiwan, Ukraine are being affected in trying to make our respective countries great. Sad, isn't it?

Norway, Holland, Belgium, UK, Spain, Portugal etc did the same thing few centuries back. Hitler did it 80 years back.

I guess the same thing may happen in future as well. Lebensraum seems to be crucial for man as it was for animals.

If i can't become uber wealthy by myself, i choose to get married to an Ambani. If my country can't become rich, I take over other countries. If I can't get enough votes in an election, i say that the other guy's votes belong to me, as Trump did.

Nikola Trump And Special Effects

2022-10-15T17:18:00.005+05:30

Nikola Founder Trevor Milton Convicted of Securities Fraud https://www.wsj.com/articles/nikola-founder-trevor-milton-convicted-of-securities-fraud-11665779578

"Among the misrepresentations cited by prosecutors in the trial were Mr. Milton describing an undrivable prototype to a crowd as “fully-functioning” and saying that Nikola was producing hydrogen fuel at a cost of $4 per kilogram when it cost other companies much more. In fact, Nikola wasn’t producing any hydrogen fuel at all, prosecutors said.

Mr. Milton’s lawyers said the Nikola founder acted in good faith and argued that the government had cherry-picked portions of his public statements."

Is this cherry picking?

"It is a distortion to say that Trevor Milton intended to commit fraud,” defense attorney Mr. Mukasey said during his closing argument. He said Mr. Milton’s statements were supported by those around him and cheered on by his leadership team, adding that important facts about Nikola’s business were fully disclosed to investors. It’s not a crime to use special effects in a commercial,” he said of the Nikola One video. “Otherwise the government would have to indict the Energizer Bunny.” "

What is the line between special effects and blatant lying? Matter of fact, is special effects ok when the purpose is to mislead? Put another way blatant lying can be euphemistically said to be special effects or "alternate reality" as we say in the context of Trump.

“If someone wanted to commit fraud,” he said, “they would do it behind closed doors.”

This is exactly like what people say about Trump. If a person does something in the open then it cannot be a crime? Putin is conducting a war in Ukraine. And the whole world knows about it. There is no camouflage. So it's not a crime?
