Miller's Oath

If you've ever walked around midtown during lunch time, you know American men love themselves a baggy suit. It's too bad they don't realize that good tailoring can make you look at least 10 pounds thinner and even 10 years younger. If you or the man in your life could use a little sartorial sprucing, I suggest heading to Miller's Oath on Greenwich Street. I've been hearing great things about founder Kirk Miller, not only from my lovely friend Alice Ryan, who also happens to be Kirk's wife, but the boy blogging community so I thought a visit was finally in order. Miller's Oath offers bespoke shirting and suits, as well as a few accessories like ties, scarves, and pocket squares, but will soon expand into ready to wear options and a possibly larger space.

It's a little under the radar but they will also custom make pieces for the ladies. I just got fitted for my own bespoke shirt and can't wait to have sleeves the right length. I inquired about the possibility of a shirtdress and was told that it's coming soon. Shirts take about six weeks and suits approximately 8-10 and require three fittings. Once they have made your pattern though, it's easy to reorder. Everything is made in America but the fabrics are imported because as Kirk told me, America doesn't have any fabric mills left which is a shame.

Kirk Miller isn't just some fly by night menswear designer either. He started off at another bespoke tailor Seize sur Vingt before heading to Paul Stuart which is where he really learned the tailoring trade. It was at Thom Browne that he saw the more creative side of menswear. He went out on his own first with his brother Derrick Miller, who you may remember from a Domino apartment feature, to create bespoke shoes under the name Barker Black until leaving to start Miller's Oath in 2010.

While all this experience was the backbone of his education, it was his father's own closet of English suiting that was the true inspiration. A family album that his father created also led to the discovery of his great-grandfather's store in Groton, South Dakota that has also led to further inspiration. It was successful because it was along the route west for the gold rush and is part of the reason for the pickaxe insignia of Miller's Oath. A symbol of hard work that still stands up today. Now if we could just get those men from Midtown into the shop.

The space used to house a restaurant and they uncovered the fireplaces in the renovation process.

The signature Miller's Oath collar but they do offer other styles.

Tweed is also a bit of a signature.

I think I might have to have a jacket made after my shirt and shirtdress. Kirk told me he's made some custom suiting for a few female clients that really looked great.

Kirk told me a funny story about this photo. When they had just finished the first stage of renovating and painting, Kirk heard a knock at the door. One of their neighbors on the block had been watching the transformation and said he would be right back because he had something for him. He came back with this photo because he said he felt like it belonged in the space. The mat is a perfect match for the color of the walls of Miller's Oath and it's such a great New York story.

Kirk's father is a custom book binder and made this family album that served as inspiration for Miller's Oath.

Alice and Kirk's son Grey Miller stopped by for a visit and to supervise. Baby Elliott was too young for a visit but I look forward to meeting her soon.

Kirk makes custom clothes for Grey who could not be cuter. I wasn't sure we were going to get along when he told me girls can't wear jeans but the almost five year old won me over when he told me he liked my jewelry.

I feel like Grey Miller could pay for college with some child modeling.

Most of the photos of Grey are a little blurry because he never stopped moving but I couldn't resist posting this one in anticipation of Father's Day.

Did I mention that Kirk Miller was also a professional soccer player? At the end of the day he played around with Grey while still wearing his bespoke suit. If that's not the sign of a great dad, I don't know what is!

La Brocante

One of the highlights of my recent trip to Paris was stumbling into the brocante de printemps 2013 de la rue de Bretagne in the Marais. It happens the first weekend of June and last weekend of November each year and has over 500 sellers. Brocantes are best described as movable flea markets while the real flea markets or puces have a set location. The best things to look for are table linens, flatware, and decorative objects. I bought a lot of great items but regret passing up some others. There are a few sites that list the weekend brocante locations (here and here) but if anyone has a better one, please let me know.

My friend Carlos almost bought this set of glassware at the same table.

The Europeans know how to best clean and display linens.

This flush mount fixture had a tag for 80 €, the seller asked for 60 € and I paid 50 €. Glad I packed a Longchap bag in my suitcase to carry all my treasures home.

The brocante in the Marais was lined with cafes of cute Parisian hipster boys. An added bonus!

Moroccan Magic

Taking time off is great until you come back over scheduled and over frazzled. Hence the lack of post yesterday. I hope to be back on track later tonight but until then I leave you with a little something chic, the home of Bruno Frisoni and Hervé Van der Straeten in Tangier, Morocco from Vogue. Bruno Frisoni designs for my favorite shoe company Roger Vivier and Hervé Van der Straeten is an amazing furniture designer so it's no wonder their home is absolute perfection. While there are some colorful rooms, what I loved most are the neural spaces of ivory, white, grey, and black, with brass accents. These images are definitely going in my future home folder. But until then, it's back to work for me!

Since I've been stuck on France for a bit, maybe it's time to mix things up again. I just found the home of Madrid interior designer Maria de la Osa online and love her eclectic style already. She has a great eye for mixing different periods and styles and I look forward to seeing more of her work in the future.

This appears to be a different take on the same room above. Also looks like they PhotoShopped out the door behind the screen when it was shot for Neuvo Estilo.

Dearest Annabel

We all know the saying that life is short but you are never really reminded of it until someone you know passes away suddenly. The fashion world was devastated by the news this morning that stylist Annabel Tollman died in her sleep Wednesday night of a blood clot. It's easy to think that because she was a stylist that she was superficial or frivolous but she was truly beautiful both inside and out.

I first met her at a party just a year and a half ago but she was one of those lovely Brits who you feel like you've known forever the minute you meet them. I fell completely under her spell as soon as she told me she liked my coat and even more so when she mentioned it again on our next encounter. She was one of those delightful people who always knew the right thing to say and always made you smile.

When I found out recently that Domaine Home was going to shoot her apartment, I invited myself over to watch and visit. Of course, I emailed her to make sure it was ok and she just laughed and said how sweet I was to even ask. I learned more about beauty products and skincare in the 10 minutes I watched her get ready to be photographed than I have in an entire lifetime of reading magazines. But she made me feel like I had taught her new things which was her way. I couldn't wait to see more of her this summer and I'm absolutely heartbroken that I won't ever see her again.

I sit here with tears in my eyes hoping that her family knows what joy she brought to so many people and that it will comfort them in their time of grief.

Chic in Paris: The Broken Arm

The chicest new store in Paris has to be The Broken Arm. It's minimal and modern but carries the best brands like Raf Simons, Kenzo, and Phillip Lim, along side books, jewelry, and even art supplies. I couldn't resist buying a beautiful pack of Faber-Castell pens on my visit. It also has a cute cafe attached so you can revive yourself after a day of shopping in the Marais.

Gilles et Boissier: Part Deux

Since I know not everyone is interested in my Parisian slideshow, I thought I'd mix things up. Of course, I have Paris on the brain so we're not getting too far afield. I posted some pics of the Paris apartment of designers Patrick Gilles and Dorothee Boissier of Gilles et Boissier a little while back here but just found some new photos on the AD France site. I highly doubt I can find an apartment to rent this fabulous on my next trip but I am sure going to try. If you don't read French, Google Translate with happily translate the story into the language of your choice. C'est Magnifique!

I love this photo because there was a entire conversation about the plural pronunciation of the French word for round porthole window, hublot, during my visit to BETC.

Paris in a Nutshell

I am definitely planning a few longer posts on some of the things I did in Paris like my trip to BETC, the brocante de la rue Bretagne, and the Musée Nissim de Camondo but I thought it might be fun to first give you a overview of my quick trip. I pretty much hit the ground running after I arrived on Thursday and didn't stop until I sat down on the plane Sunday afternoon.

I stayed at the Hotel Bel Ami in the 6th arrondissement of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the location could not have been better although the hotel was a bit modern for my taste. My first stop was to Ladurée on rue Bonaparte to pick up some macarons before having lunch across the street at Le Pré aux Clercs. It's fun to people watch at Café de Flore but the food isn't great so I prefer to actually eat elsewhere in Paris.

After lunch, I took a walk over to the Seine. It rained off an on all day but Paris wouldn't be Paris without grey cloudy skies.

The reason I love staying in Saint Germain are all the charming bookshops and galleries. Even if you can't afford anything, you can be inspired just by looking.

I always say that New York has pockets of pretty while Paris is one of the most all over beautiful cities in the world. The Musée de la Monnaie (Currency Museum) is one of my favorite buildings in Saint Germain. After a quick dinner, it was back to my hotel to rest up for my big day on Friday.

The whole reason for my trip to Paris was to visit the future home of BETC, France's largest advertising agency, in Pantin, which has been described as the Brooklyn of Paris. Chanel and Hermès have already moved some of their divisions into the area because space is scare in Paris.

I also toured the current office of BETC and interviewed its founder Rémi Babinet. I'll have more on this in another post but the photo above was taken from their roof. Not too shabby.

While I traveled to Paris alone, I wasn't actually alone for long. Before I left, Wayne Pate emailed me to let me know that he and his wife, fashion designer Rebecca Taylor, were also leaving that night for Paris. They were staying just a few blocks away at L'Hotel (this is his instagram pic) which was were I was supposed to stay but they were booked. It is one of the most charming hotels and where I met up with them for champagne Friday night.

If someone displayed flowers like this outside their door in New York, they'd probably be stolen within minutes.

The Louvre never ceases to amaze me both inside and out.

I decided to brave the crowds Friday night at the Louvre to check out a few works I still needed to see and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't that packed.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace is always awe inspiring.

I was treated to a beautiful sunset in Paris Friday night as I walked back to Saint Germain. Le sigh.

On Saturday, I had plans to finally visit Merci in the Marais before meeting up with architect and perfumer Carlos Huber who you might know from my book Creativity at Work. I must say that I was disappointed by the merchandise in Merci and that the little red car was gone. There is another new store nearby called The Broken Arm that I much preferred. It's a little fresher and cooler and has a cute cafe attached.

I wondered what I was going to do with myself for two hours until I was to meet up with Carlos. Luckily, the Travel Gods smiled on me and I walked right into the twice annual Brocante de la rue de Bretagne. It happens each year during the first weekend in June and last weekend in November. I will definitely be posting more photos in another post.

Carlos took me to visit, Jardin de France, a shop in the Marais that carry his perfume Arquiste. Carlos is in Paris to meet with his agent and all the stores that carry his perfume. If you are missing my instagram pics of Paris, I highly recommend following Carlos at @arquistecarlos since he will be there for almost another month. Talk about jealous!

While with Carlos, we shopped some more of the brocante where the sellers around the Square de Temple had even more amazing items for sale. I picked up this complete map of Paris from 1889 for only 15 euros!

While at the brocante, Carlos mentioned that his friend Vahram Muratyan who wrote the book Paris Versus New York was in the area so we met up with him. I bought his smaller book and just received the larger version as a gift along with an invitation to a Cartier dinner tomorrow night so meeting him was a huge treat! He also has a great instagram pics of Paris at @parisvsnyc.

La Madeline church is always a beautiful sight when you visit the 8th arrondissment.

I left Carlos and the group at a cafe so I could hit some stores to buy gifts before they closed. Most everyone in Paris is closed on Sundays so I had to fit everything in on Saturday.

Walked past a group of men playing boule in the Tuileries, another of my favorite places in Paris.

I would happily move to Paris just for the architecture.

Bicycles are the main mode of transportation for may in Paris. How cute is he?!

I had to stop into the Dries Van Noten store as well. It's beyond chic.

The Pont Alexandre never ceases to amaze.

Saturday night found me at the old school restaurant Marius et Janette to meet a new blog friend Emmanuelle Rio who grew up in Paris but now lives in London. She has a great online home site Belgrave Place that you should definitely check out.

Sunday morning had me traveling to the 8th arrondissement to meet up with Carlos Huber to visit the Musée Nissim de Camondo On the way, my taxi drove past the Musee d'Orsay that had a huge line out front. Meanwhile, Carlos and I had practically had the Musee Camondo to ourselves.

I am planning a separate post just on the Musée Nissim de Camondo and I highly recommend visiting it if you haven't already.

Carlos was staying in an apartment of some friends nearby so I went to check it out.

The portes of Paris never get old either.

I don't want to show their apartment but the landing outside was pretty chic. It was created in the space on the top floor of the building that use to house the maids.

I also manged to meet up with an interior designer I know in Paris Guillaume Excoffier before heading to the airport on the most gorgeous day. He had a store in the Marais but closed it and will be opening a new one in Saint Germain at 34 rue Bonaparte around September.

I managed to cram a lot into this short trip and as I mentioned, I am planning a longer trip this fall. If you have any recommendations on apartment rentals, please let me know. À bientôt Paris!

Blue Monday

I had an amazing time in Paris but it was much too short so I am already planning another trip this fall. I can't wait to spend more time exploring new parts of my favorite city. The highlight of this trip was finding the twice a year brocante around the rue de Bretagna in the Marais. I have lots of pictures to post soon but until then, I'm posting a few photos from the old apartment of Jacques Dehornois who I imagine also spent many a day shopping the brocantes and puces of Paris. I don't know much about it except that it was photographed by Francois Halard and featured years ago in House & Garden. Speaking of Francois Halard, he has a wonderful feature in the latest Apartmento magazine which I was alerted to by Wayne Pate who was also in Paris this weekend. Definitely pick it up.

My first day in Paris involved a little rain that later turned into a heavy shower. I'm glad I got out and about around Saint Germain and the Louvre before it sent me back to my hotel for warmth. Royale with Cheese

I uploaded these photos before I left for Paris but forgot to actually write anything or post it. In all honesty, jet lag is rearing it's ugly head. Or at least that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I actually posted these photos of designer Jacques Grange's apartment in the Palais Royal a few years ago but since the Palais Royal is one of my favorite places in Paris, I thought they deserved a second look. I'm still amazed that he stays so under the radar. It's so French and chic. I doubt that I will see him when I stop by the Palais Royal on this trip but I'm certainly going to keep my eyes peeled just in case!

Paris is Always a Good Idea

I couldn't agree with Audrey more especially since I'm off to Paris tonight. I'm headed to the City of Light for a press trip with a lot of built in personal time. The weather seems a little iffy and not unlike what it's been in New York recently so as soon as I hit CDG, I'm buying a four day Paris Museum Pass. I'm looking forward to getting lost in the Louvre or Musée Nissim de Camondo whenever it starts to rain. Now that we have a Laduree a few blocks from my apartment, it's not as much of a treat but I can't wait visit the tea salon when I need a rest. I will be staying in Saint Germain where I'll be able to walk to all my favorite places like Flamant and Deyrolle. I hope to make it to the Marais to visit Merci this trip too.

I'm traveling alone and actually look forward to getting lost while taking photos and not having to worry about holding someone up. Photography is becoming more of a focus in my life and I'm excited to take my better camera and better eye to Paris this trip. I also plan to Instagram my adventure if you want to follow along. I'll try not to post too many pics but can't make any guarantees. I wasn't looking forward to eating dinner alone but I do know a few people who I plan to meet up with during my trip.

Most of all, I'm looking forward to being inspired. Cassandra of Coco + Kelley posted about needing directing in her Uncomfortable post from yesterday and I can definitely relate. I've been feeling adrift this year and not sure which direction to steer myself. I have been in safely ensconced in my comfort zone and need to figure out what I want to do next, whether it's another book or developing a product line. There is nothing like a change of scenery to inspire and motivate and I hope to come back with a new sense of purpose.

As I mentioned, I am traveling alone and want this fact to inspire you as well. So many times people don't go places because they don't have anyone to go with them. If you've been waiting to visit Paris or another place, just do it. There is no time like the present to follow your dream and you never know, you might just meet someone fabulous along the way.

When I first saw the cover image of the Wall Street Journal Magazine last week, it looked more appropriate for September not May but the jokes on me. It's currently 45 degrees in New York and this cable knit sweater from The Row would be perfect to wear today. The magazine is inside the Saturday, May 25 edition of the Wall Street Journal newspaper. Make sure you pick it up. It will give you something to read while you're warming your feet in front of the fire in The Hamptons.

It's been exciting to see the progress of Serena & Lily from when I was first introduced to them in 2010. It was even more inspiring to hear founders Lily Kanter and Serena Dugan talk about the really early days when they just made crib bedding while standing in their first retail store in the Hamptons. A group of us were treated to a sneak peek of the space in Wainscott that opens on Saturday,May 25th and it looks amazing! In addition to their fabulous bed linens, pillowsand upholstery, they will offer an array of products including amazing art, limited edition surfboards, beach bags, pareos, bistro chairs, and hostess gifts galore! I used to joke that I could decorate an entire Hamptons house with one trip to Mecox Gardens but I'll amend that to include a trip to Mecox Gardens and Serena & Lily Beach Market.

The Hamptons are always chic but this summer they are definitely getting a little more chic. Today I was out in Wainscott for a preview of the new Serena & Lily store, photos to come tomorrow, and here is a peek into Aerin Lauder's new Southampton store. The Cannes Film Festival is in full swing on the French Riviera right now but stars have been posing on La Croisette since the first festival in 1947. The heyday for me was the time of the late 1950's to early 1960's from when these photos were taken. She worked with local photographer Yiorgos Kaplasnidis and a local model in these stunning images shot on the island of Paros. Greece was the perfect backdrop to not only her signature stripes but new caftans and tunics debuting this May. The Chance ethos is described as "classics that travel the world" and if you can't get away, you can feel like you have thanks to Julia.
