Getting Fired Has its Advantages

Getting fired forces you to evaluate your life and, your career and also gives you time and space to pursue working for yourself. I am a consultant and work for myself using the talents and skills I acquired through my “employment”. I now an now CEO of my own online empire and live more comfortably with less stress than I ever did before.

I am not here to tell you that it was an easy transition, but I made it through and so can anyone with the right opportunity, the right education – tools and resources and the right mentor or leadership.

How Do You Define Success

There was a motorcycle policeman on either side of Osceola to support the torch she was holding. There would be a strong hand under hers when she became too tired to hold it aloft herself. The crowds cheered while she smiled and beamed.

Osceola never dreamed such an honor would be hers. She didn’t dream of any of the honors heaped on her in the years after. . . But wait - I’m getting ahead of myself.

Osceola McCarty had dreams of being a nurse when she was a little girl growing up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Her dreams were laid aside when family needs forced her to leave school at age 13 and join her grandmother, mother and aunt beside the washing pot in the back yard.

That big black kettle, boiling away under the relentless Mississippi sun, pelting rain, or cold winds, became her existence. You could find her, from early in the morning until late in the evening, either washing clothes or stooped over a hot iron as she crisped them up. At some point she became content with her life. She loved her work but she thought a lot about what education would have meant to her if she could have stayed in school.

Osceola buried her grandmother, then her mother, then her aunt. And she kept right on washing and ironing. 75 years worth. She lived alone. She walked everywhere she went. She didn’t talk much because there was no one to talk to. She pretty much just worked. With the exception of the trip she made to the bank every month to put money away for her future. In 87 years she had only been out of Mississippi once. So how did this elderly black woman end up carrying the Olympic torch?

Well, it all began the day she made her monthly trip to the bank. She had decided to retire because the arthritis in her hands had gotten so bad. The bank officers suggested she should make plans about what she was going to do with all her money. All her money? Yes. 75 years of savings, of putting away small amounts of money, had grown to more than $200,000!

Osceola knew she wasn’t going to live forever. After some thought, Osceola decided that upon her death she would give 10% to the church, 10% each to 3 cousins, and the rest, $150,000, to the University of Southern Mississippi right there in Hattiesburg. "I just want the scholarship to go to some child who needs it, to whoever is not able to help their children," Osceola said. "I'm too old to get an education, but they can."

She never dreamed of the uproar her gift would cause. Nor the honors that would be heaped on her – meeting President Clinton; numerous awards; an honorary doctorate from Harvard University; the keys to cities; travel all over America; and so much more.

Osceola simply wanted what she had worked so hard for all her life to make a difference for others. Her philosophies of life were simple and powerful.

On work: "I knew there were people who didn't have to work as hard as I did, but it didn't make me feel sad. I loved to work, and when you love to do anything, those things don't bother you."

On saving money: "A smart person plans for the future. You never know what kind of emergency will come up, and you can't rely on the government to meet all your needs. You have to take responsibility for yourself."

You see, success means different things to different people. Success to Osceola meant working hard, saving her money, and then in the end – making a difference to others. She never had much as far as material things but when she died in 1999 at the age of 91, she was rich beyond belief in all the things that truly mattered.

How do you define success? Too many people never answer that question for themselves. They let the world define success for them, and then wonder why they are dissatisfied with the results of their life. Take some time and discover the answer for YOUR life.

On good living: "There's a lot of talk about self-esteem these days. It seems pretty basic to me. If you want to feel proud of yourself, you've got to do things you can be proud of. Feelings follow actions."

Corporate Burnout

Do you dread getting up to face another day at work? You’re not alone. In fact, you may well be in the majority. Corporate burnout is becoming so widespread throughout the US and other countries that people travel the country giving seminars on how to handle job burnout and make workers feel less stressed. Of course, you’ve probably heard the drill-”Learn to work smarter, not harder”… “Be a team player”… “It came down from the higher-ups”… “In the end this will help us reach our goals and we’ll get fat bonuses.”

Of course, the goals set for many corporate employees are so unrealistic that the bonuses they hold out for never materialize. Perhaps you hit 8 out of 9 targets, but sorry, you don’t get the prize because you didn’t hit that last, totally impossible ninth one. Sometimes it feels like you’re working in some sort of absurd carnival sideshow. It’s no wonder you don’t feel very committed to a corporation that treats you like a slave. How can you feel loyal when there’s so little appreciation?

Mega-Stress

The unrelenting stress of a high-pressure job can lead to numerous health problems as well- hypertension, heart attacks, backaches, anxiety, headaches, depression, and even addiction to drugs or alcohol, either as a way to try to stay energized and “up” to complete excessive workloads, or as a self-medicating attempt to relax when you finally have some time for yourself.

To add to the stress, stories of layoffs by major corporations are announced every month.
In 2006, 1,500,000 workers were pink-slipped in mass layoffs (”mass” meaning more than 50 employees at a time). Rumors circulate constantly about what the top management is doing now, what changes are in the wind. Companies are “reorganizing.” They’re “outsourcing” or selling out to another company. Or they’ve gone bankrupt-only to reappear overseas, employing workers for a tiny percentage of their American counterparts’ salaries.

Fat Cats and Sad Sacks

Average, everyday workers like you are the ones who bear the brunt of these kinds of changes. CEO’s and other top executives just keep rolling in the dough-even those at companies you wouldn’t think of as “blue chip.” For example, in 2005, the annual pay package of Dollar General’s CEO, David Perdue, was $3,314,901 (as reported by The Corporate Library). An American worker earning an average salary would have to work until the year 2135 to make what Perdue makes in one year. But frankly, this guy is small-time. The average total compensation for a CEO of a Standard & Poor’s 500 company in 2005 was $13.51 million-over four times what Perdue made, and a 16% raise over the year before. Did you get a 16% raise recently?

Like many of your co-workers, you probably feel angry, undervalued, underpaid, and exhausted when you think about stories like these. Few salaried employees in corporate America work a traditional 40-hour week. Many put in 50, 60, even 70 hours to meet the demands of their superiors. Hourly workers are cut off at 40 hours or less so the company can avoid paying overtime-and you know who takes up the slack. (Meanwhile, those hourly workers may have to work an additional job-at straight-time pay, of course.)

The “blame culture” that has developed in our society extends into the corporate world as well. (”It’s her fault we have to work so late. If only she’d do her job like I do!”) Feelings of competition and worries about favoritism increase feelings of anger and powerlessness.

What’s the Alternative?

There is a way NOT to let all these other people control your life and hold power over your economic survival and lifestyle. You can take control of your own life by becoming your own boss. Ironically, as you’ve become more and more disenchanted with your corporate job, you have also been learning what kind of job you need to be happy.

Are these some of the aspects you would include on your list of ideal job conditions?

Choosing how to handle situations yourself instead of deferring to a “company policy” that you find ridiculous.

What happens when you believe something with all your heart?
Belief fuels enthusiasm, and enthusiasm explodes into passion. It fires our souls and lifts our spirits. In 1991, when Successories hired Tim Dumler as a corporate account manager, he shared his goal of becoming number one in the company with his manager, Neil Sexton. But Neil, quite frankly, had serious doubts that Tim could make it through the first month, much less be number one.

Neil’s first two interviews with Tim were conducted over the phone, and he passed those with flying colors. But when Neil met Tim for the first time, he was shocked when Tim told him he was legally blind. He began to lose his sight when he was in the third grade from a rare disease called macular degeneration. Tim acknowledged he would have problems entering orders into the computers, but he had a solution.
He told Neil about a machine that he could hook up to magnify the letters on the screen to two inches high. Tim was willing to buy it if he could have the job.

After the conversation, Neil came to my office and explained the situation. Mac said, “Neil, let’s give him a chance,” but I must admit, I had serious doubts that Tim could do it.

Well, we were dead wrong. We grossly underestimated Tim’s passion and his determination to succeed. Even though it took him much longer to enter the orders, Tim made it work. He came in early, he worked late. Whatever it took, he did it.

In 1991, Tim’s first year, he was number one out of ten experienced corporate sales reps, with over $500,000 in sales. In 1994 he was number one again with $700,000, and again in 1997 with $950,000. His customers loved him because when you can’t see, you become a great listener. His peers loved him because of his caring, positive attitude.

He was certainly an inspiration to me, too. I asked him one time, “Tim, how do you stay so positive?” He said, “Mac, it’s unfortunate that I’m visually impaired,
but I have to tell you that fighting through the adversity has made me a better person. I have come to realize that I have a lot more than I don’t have. I love my family, my work, and the people I work with.
I’ve been blessed in many ways.”

Novice Entrepreneurs...Is Your Fear Losing You Millions?

Call it scare tactics: When it comes to learning important lessons -- in the stock market or elsewhere -- it's OK to be afraid. Just don't be too afraid.

A Connecticut couple started with an investment account of several thousand dollars in the 1960s. They put it all in a single stock PepsiCo, and then watched as $800 vanished in a market downturn. The experience was so traumatic that the couple dumped Pepsi, and they haven't bought a single share of stock in the 40 years since.
But here's the killer, says a member of the family: "That position, if they had held on to it, would be worth over $3 million today."

This is the sort of episode that gives fear a bad name.

Fear is what makes people bail out of good opportunities when if they would have just stuck it out, could have made it. It's what makes them feel it's safer to work for someone else rather than taking a chance on themselves. Yes, it takes courage to be an entrepreneur but I can tell you one thing….. If you pick something that you have a passion for and stick to it…learning and growing, the rewards are “priceless”.

Yet fear is a good thing, in its place. Let's say you're hiking and spot a rattlesnake coiled up just ahead on the trail. The amygdala, the part of your brain that serves as fear central, instantly fires out a signal to make you freeze in your tracks. It happens before you're fully conscious of the threat, and that's what saves you from stepping on the snake.
The amygdala is constantly scanning not just for "natural triggers," such as snakes, but also for things that have threatened us in our daily lives, including financial calamities, past failure triggers and genetic limiting beliefs.

Let's say you were a novice entrepreneur caught in a “get rich quick scheme” surfing the reality-free momentum of the hyped up promises of your “up-line” -- until the day you watched your entire savings go out the window. The intense fear you felt causes you to remember that moment more vividly.

Noradrenalin, one of the fight-or-flight hormones, works on the amygdala as a long-term-memory enhancer, locking in every nasty detail about the thing that frightened you. Your amygdala remembers so it can instantly send out an unconscious alarm at any hint of the same threat. And that kind of learned fear can save your neck: The next time around, over-hyped opportunities may not look so thrilling.

But fear is also a tricky emotion. It can blind you to legitimate opportunities.
If you over-generalize a threat, it can give you a lifelong phobia about all opportunities, as happened to the Pepsi couple. The fear of financial loss literally causes pain.

"When you get burned in a fire, that registers in the pain centers of the brain," says Andrew Lo, a professor of finance and investment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "And when you get burned by losing money, neurologists have demonstrated that that also registers in the pain centers of the brain."

One remedy for irrational fear is the same sort of exposure therapy that psychologists use on people who are afraid of heights, spiders or airplanes. Limiting your risk on a good opportunity and doing your due diligence can help you get over that unreasonable fear of failure.

And it goes without saying that is it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Now, that isn’t saying that there aren’t some pretty amazing opportunities in the home business arena, there are, but making sure it is a good fit for you will take a little bit of research. Research that could save you from another “bad memory”.
But if you are someone who is gun-shy after a big loss, you will need to reactivate the relevant areas of the brain, according to Lo. So a better way for him to rebuild his courage is by starting over at a smaller scale where the risks are not so daunting.

By going back into an opportunity and re-exposing yourself to the threat, under safer circumstances, you don't wipe out the memory of the thing that scared you. Instead, you form new memories, to define the threat more precisely. Trying to avoid all danger would just immobilize you. So you learn when it's safe to move forward even in the face of apparent danger.

Scientists have recently discovered that these "courage" memories engage a part of the brain called the ventral medial prefrontal cortex, or vmPFC. And the vmPFC can modulate or override the amygdala's fear response. So courage isn't a product of your brave heart. It comes from your vmPFC.

How can this help you the next time an opportunity rolls around? Professionals increasingly use meditation as a way to keep the mind clear, and new research suggests that over the long term it may make the vmPFC larger and more robust. Traditional relaxation techniques -- breathing deeply and taking a mental step back -- can also help entrepreneurs recover their precious sense of equanimity in the face of stress.

The idea isn't necessarily to get greedy when everybody else is fearful or vice versa. It's to overcome the excitement and to keep your emotions harnessed to your intelligence, not the other way around.

So if your fear is making you lose millions because “once bitten, twice shy” is all you feel when a good opportunity comes around, but you really think that you would like to be a successful entrepreneur, there are good opportunities out there, you just need to find one that limits your exposure, teaches you to be better, has support and mentoring to get you through the rough patches and then slowly proceed at your OWN comfort level.

Opportunities that push you to produce unrealistic quotas in order to earn or make you pass up sales before you get a piece of the action, or promise you the world for little or no work are ones that you need to run as fast as you can away from.
A proper business will have the infrastructure to guide you and support you, allowing you to earn as you learn.

Welcome to the world of home business. It can be very rewarding, very satisfying…as long as you read the rule book before you get on the playing field.

As I watched the Oscars last evening I thought....
“How many of them thought they’d end up here.”

I watched the Oscars, with 1 billion other
people around the world.

Some of the stories of the winners and
nominees are just incredible. Inspiring.

As I watched men and woman, young and old
approach the stage to get their awards,
it had me thinking.

Here’s what many of them, winners and nominees,
had in common:

Someone in their past didn’t believe in them.

Someone in their past, said
“You could never make a career of this.”

Sometime in their past, they got on stage and froze.

Sometime in their past, they said “No.” to a
great opportunity because fear had them in its claws.

A few days ago, the New York Giants won the Superbowl.

Let’s talk about the quarterback of the Giants, Eli Manning.

For the whole season the media was trashing Eli Manning.

They wanted him benched, they wanted him traded, they said
he’d never live up to his potential.

They said he’s been in the league 4 years and still makes
tons of errors.

The fans were booing him and his future in New York looked
bleak, at best.

And then something happened. Most people are still in shock
by what happened.

It clicked. Yes, it ‘clicked’ for Eli Manning.

All of a sudden.

Starting with the last game in the regular season and ending
last Sunday, Eli Manning became a superstar.

A hero to millions. To all the fans that were trashing him

The 80/20 Rule is one of the most helpful of all
concepts of time and life management.
It is also called the “Pareto Principle” after
its founder, the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto,
who first wrote about it in 1895. Pareto noticed
that people in his society seemed to divide
naturally into what he called the “vital few”,
the top 20 percent in terms of money and influence,
and the “trivial many”, the bottom 80 percent.

He later discovered that virtually all economic
activity was subject to this principle as well.
For example, this principle says that 20 percent
of your activities will account for 80 percent
of your results, 20 percent of your customers will
account for 80 percent of your sales, 20 percent of
your products or services will account for 80 percent
of your profits, 20 percent of your tasks will account
for 80 percent of the value of what you do, and so on.
This means that if you have a list of ten items to do,
two of those items will turn out to be worth five or
ten times or more than the other eight items put together.

Number of Tasks versus Importance of Tasks

Here is an interesting discovery. Each of the ten
tasks may take the same amount of time to accomplish.
But one or two of those tasks will contribute five or
ten times the value of any of the others.

Often, one item on a list of ten tasks that you have
to do can be worth more than all the other nine items
put together. This task is invariably the frog that
you should eat first.

Focus on Activities, Not Accomplishments

The most valuable tasks you can do each day are often
the hardest and most complex. But the payoff and rewards
for completing these tasks efficiently can be tremendous.
For this reason, you must adamantly refuse to work on tasks
in the bottom 80 percent while you still have tasks in the
top 20 percent left to be done.

Before you begin work, always ask yourself,
“Is this task in the top 20 percent of my
activities or in the bottom 80 percent?”

The hardest part of any important task is getting
started on it in the first place. Once you actually
begin work on a valuable task, you will be naturally
motivated to continue. A part of your mind loves to
be busy working on significant tasks that can really
make a difference. Your job is to feed this part of
your mind continually.

Motivate Yourself

Just thinking about starting and finishing an
important task motivates you and helps you to
overcome procrastination. Time management is
really life management, personal management.
It is really taking control of the sequence of
events. Time management is having control over
what you do next. And you are always free to
choose the task that you will do next. Your ability
to choose between the important and the unimportant
is the key determinant of your success in life and work.

Effective, productive people discipline themselves
to start on the most important task that is before
them. They force themselves to eat that frog,
whatever it is. As a result, they accomplish vastly
more than the average person and are much happier
as a result.
This should be your way of working as well.
