Our Enduring Shangri-La

In looking at the World for permanence, they found nothing.

They searched in the peaks of snow-covered mountains,

In the earthy lushness of the valleys,

In the vastness of the oceans,

In the pale whiteness of sand dunes,

In the rush of magnificent falls,

In the vacuum of silent nights,

And yet found naught.

For all gifts were concealed within our breath,

As a great war raged inside our mortal soul

We searched for what is without end,

Meanwhile our kingdom reigned sublime in each other's eyes

Endowed with riches no one could ever claim but you and I

For our miracle was beyond all reason,

Witnessed by only a few, it remains to be discovered

Nor Columbus or Vasco da Gama could’ve landed in our shores,

For we were Shangri-la.

Desired by many and yet the most illusive of destinations

Where humankind could abandon all suffering

An atlas ingenious minds have failed to decipher

Of an oasis that promises Nirvana

For in our unity so ideally suited

We transcended the rules of time and space

Bridging distant continents into Pangaea

While the Himalayas formed by the ripples of our collision

Where now a lonesome Sheppard gathers his sheep

Our physical plane preserved by once-upon-a memory

As if our hearts retain the scars of a Golden Age

When turmoil turned to clarity,

Attachment to Freedom,

As we desperately desired to explore a familiar and yet unknown territory;

Seeking for what made us immemorial

And only finding shelter in the caves our passion unearthed

In a land where we built a shrine to kneel and pray to what we cannot confine

Through the eras, we have become Atlantis

And no legend can ever trace our history

For only ruins still stand to reveal secrets we left behind

And no bible, or Torah, or mantra can recite our beauty

Nor Buddha, or Jesus, or Mohammed could speak our language

For they lacked what we had plenty to bestow

And now an entire civilization moves to our melody,

One we chanted in a moment of a blissful embrace

Where we found enlightenment in the simplicity of our polarity

I as Ying, you as Yang,

In emptiness we were made whole

In darkness, we ignited an everlasting flame

Which now melts candle wax lit in our name

The fruits of our union gather upon the supple Earth

Each carrying within our immortal essence

Though our temples have long turned into ashes

You existed once as a Phoenix

While I, as a Lotus

Our majesty persevered

And through the millennia,

Our existence swayed the course of mankind

In our Genesis, we inspired salvation

And in the faded pages of our sole Testament

Love is revealed as our enduring Shangri-La.
