Pssst we’ve got a secret we’d like to share with you…

PrintWild’s amazing team of designers and developers at WildWeb have been burning the midnight oil working on the new, improved, ultra-sexy PrintWild.co.za. It’s fresh, modern and has a ton of new and fun features. And today we’d like to share it with you, our most valued customers.

When the first PrintWild was built back in 2007, the internet was a very different place. Facebook hadn’t really gained traction in South Africa, and Kulula had just launched their infamous lime site. Bright green was in vogue, and boy did we jump on that bandwagon! But it worked, and people loved it. We were the first fully online printing store in South Africa and that broke tremendous ground – our first customers loved the concept: an easy to use online company with great customer service, and the most incredible top-quality products.

As we grew, so did our passion for quality. Our products are world-class, and our customers don’t mind telling us so. So we decided at the beginning of 2013 that our site needed to catch up and sing the same song. Not just a fresh coat of paint, but an intelligent upgrade that showcases our personality, shows off our wonderful products, and makes ordering online simpler and faster. And we’re opening it up for beta, with a goal to go live in a week or two.

Here are some of the features we’ve been working hard to bring to you:

Rock solid new image upload system. It’s robust, reliable and handles giant file uploads with ease.
We’re social. Nowadays a lot of people have their photos online already, so we’ve integrated with the world’s top sites. You can now select photos directly from your Facebook, Instagram, Flickr and Dropbox accounts. It’s a massive undertaking that’s going to make ordering your favourite images easier than ever.
Multiple images. Upload or select as many images as you want, and we’ll batch upload them. Each order will default to the last item you’ve created so you don’t have to re-choose each product if you’re ordering a series of Faceblocks for example.
It’s mobile… well almost. We’re now fully iPad compatible, so you can select images from your camera roll with the tap of a finger. Plus we’ll be rolling out to all mobile phones in the next few weeks.

Featured Artist of the Week: Chad Wright

We caught up with Chad Wright, Digital Gallery's Artist of the Week, here's what he had to say...

1) Why did you become a photographer?
I have a complete and utter love for the bush and all things wild. Getting to take my wildlife images back home to Johannesburg makes living in the city bearable.

2) What is your preferred kind of photography?
I am a wildlife and landscape photographer by profession but love sports photography as well.

3) Whose work has influenced you the most?
I would have to say Chad Cocking (since we share the same first name!), Morkel Erasmus and Marlon du Toit. All these guys are home grown and are the best in the business, in my opinion.

4) Your favourite image you have taken?
I love these three images- they speak volumes to me. All my images that I sell have a unique story behind them (that I pass on to clients who purchase my work) - that's why I choose to put the time and effort into editing some, and not others.

Seconds After The Chase by Chad Wright

- This cheetah was sitting next to a springbok which he had just taken down, still panting from the chase. We spent a good two hours with him before a storm rolled in and he disappeared into the nearby shrubs with his prize. Taken near Twee Rivieren rest camp, Kgalagadi Transfonteir Park.

- We watched these hippos playing in a small dam whilst the sun set one winter's afternoon. The older of the two wouldn't give the little guy a break, chasing him around the dam continually biting his neck. I love the movement and detail in this image. Taken near Manyane rest camp, Pilanesberg National Park.

Aardwolf by Chad Wright

- This was the first time I had ever been able to snap an aardwolf in the wild. We followed him along a dusty road whilst he marked his territory over and over again, occasionally stopping to give us a look. Taken near the main gate at Mountain Zebra National Park.

5) What type of cameras do you shoot with?
My main body is a Canon 1Ds Mk II and my other body is a Canon 1D Mk II (more for bird and sport photography).

6) Favourite equipment to take along on a shoot?
I never leave home without my 300mm f2.8L lens. Since it isn't stabilized and weighs a ton when strapped to a 1D body, I recently purchased a Badger Gear "Ground Pod" and a sturdy ball head which sits on a beanbag on my car door.

7) What is the best time of the day to take shot?
Mornings, with out a doubt. Just remember your flask filled with strong coffee!

8) How do you educate yourself to take better photos?
I am currently in the process of getting my FGASA level 1 field guiding certificate to help me along with tracking wildlife and understanding the bush around me.

9) How do you feel about being in front of the camera?
I don't enjoy others taking pics of me, Claire and I normally wonder around a given location with a tri-pod and do it ourselves.

10) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Don't pop into your favourite camera store "just to have a look around"! You don't need any more equipment!

11) What makes the good picture stand out from the average?
As much as composition, lighting, DOF, etc help make a good shot, if there is a good story behind the image and you can capture it you've got a winner in my opinion.

12) Is there anybody or anything you would love to photograph
The elephants and wild dogs of Mana Pools in Zimbabwe.

13) Complete the sentence: If you could be invisible for one day with your camera…
I'd wonder around the deepest part of Kruger to see what I could find.

We caught up with this week's most popular photographer and tried to get to know him a little bit better. Here's what we learnt:

1) Why did you become a photographer?
Photography has always been my passion. I am not very successful with anything that I am not passionate about, so I really didn't have a choice - I needed to become a photographer.

2) What is your preferred kind of photography?
I prefer to photograph anything that I really enjoy looking at or doing. I mostly end up photographing wildlife, nature and travel.

3) Whose work has influenced you the most?
Frans Lanting, Jim Brandenburg and Ansel Adams

4) Your favourite image you have taken?

I like the hippo I photographed at Sabi Sands.

5) Favourite equipment to take along on a shoot?
I don't really have a favourite piece of equipment. Although I find myself shooting very often with my 70-200mm f2,8 and my 300mm f2,8 lenses.

6) What is the best time of the day to take shot?
I like photographing in dull light, being it early morning, late afternoon or before sunrise or after sunset. I also really enjoy photographing in bright overcast conditions.

7) How do you educate yourself to take better photos?
I practice. If you are obsessive enough about photography you find yourself finding inspiration everywhere around you. I believe that one is the most creative if you don't measure yourself with other photographers, although it does help to look at the work of the masters. National Geographic is a wonderful magazine to get original ideas for useful photography.

8) How do you feel about being in front of the camera?
Don't like it.

9) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I started photographing with the best possible lenses and equipment.

10) What makes the good picture stand out from the average?
Originality. These days where everybody can take the standard cliche photograph, you have to be able to stand out. And the only way to do it is to be original and take chances.

11) Is there anybody or anything you would love to photograph?
I'd love to go to the Galapagos Islands. And South Georgia.

12) Complete the sentence:
If you could be invisible for one day with your camera, I would like to photograph a leopard in a tree from right next to it.

Calculating The Aspect Ratio Of Your Image

Every now and again, PrintWild receives a query regarding the size and aspect of an image. In the last week, a client sent us this question:

The website requires me to select a size/dimensions for the print. I have an idea of the size I am looking for (say 1m in height..). However, I am not sure which of the size options to select as I do not want the image to be distorted and am not sure how to scale the image. How should I proceed?

For those of you who are struggling with the same question and have been putting off ordering a custom size print, the image below will help you understand how to work out the corresponding height or width of any photo if you need to change the size...

Here's an example: If you want the width of this 14cm image to be 16.5cm, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner of your image (just like the red line in the image). The height will be where the blue lines meet, in this case 11.8cm.

Now that you understand the concept, there's a mathematical formula to help you work out how to do this (without drawing all over your image and taking the time to find the nearest millimetre).

Current height ÷ current width × desired width = desired height.

10 ÷ 14 × 16.5 = 11.8 cm

If you need to figure out the desired width, just switch height and width around.

The World of Colour Correction - One of the most intricate and complicated worlds to live in

After a rather long sabbatical, PrintWild is back in action and ready to take the blogging world by storm!

Paul (Snr) Changuion wrote this article on his experience over the last few weeks with colour correction:

"Having spent many years correcting and printing colour images, the past two weeks have been really interesting. Colour management is a huge subject and would take volumes to explain fully.

Three weeks ago I went for a a simple eye check up with Ophthalmologist Dr Malcolm Carey of Ballito.

The bottom line was that I had lens replacements in both my eyes. After the first implant (in my left eye) I noticed the new lens was about 40% sharper than it was through my year-old prescription specs. More surprising was that my left eye seemed to see about 5% bluer than the untreated eye. After a day or so the colours seen by both eyes were once again in agreement. Another anomaly was that all colours appeared more saturated. Finally this Tuesday the right eye lens was replaced, which produced the same colour cast as the left eye in the first 24 hours and by Wednesday evening my sight was amazingly sharp and comfortable.

This fascinating experience prompted me to ask Dr Carey a few questions:

Question 1: What colour lenses did you put into my eyes?
Answer: The implant lenses apparently do have a yellowish filter, to protect the retina from mostly invisible blue and ultraviolet rays.

Question 2: Does the brain compensate for colour cast in light sources? For example, I once spent some time in a green Porta Loo when following the Umzinduzi Canoe Marathon and when I eventually emerged, everything seemed, for a while, to have a magenta colour cast. Another example was driving a car with the top section of the windscreen having a green anti-glare tint. This had the same effect. For a while after that, having left the car, the blue sky had a magenta cast.
Answer: This was because the brain had in the false light conditions compensated for the colour cast produced by the green. The green sensitive photoreceptors (cones) had increased activity in a green environment and then a degree of photoreceptor “exhaustion” had occurred. This led to an under representation of green once in natural environment. (One should always minimise time in portaloos for obvious reasons!!!)

Question 3: Is there a method to test an individual’s colour sensitivity?
Answer: The most sensitive test is called “Farnsworth-Munsell”. It’s time consuming and would be expensive to run, but would give one a clear summary of an individual’s colour perception, or in our terminology, our very own colour profile/gamut. The results would produce a graph very much like the colour gamut produced when profiling a printing paper.

Question 4: How varied does colour appear to different people?
Answer: Generally, on average, women are more sensitive to colour variations than men are. (Men are more likely to have a degree of colour blindness which can vary from mild to complete - this is usually RED- GREEN. Female colour blindness is less common but when present, is usually more severe). Dr Carey did not have any survey statistics available, but said a rough estimate would be that only 30% of people could differentiate finite colour casts.

This begs the question: How do we judge the colour in images when editing them for print?

The starting point would be to use a good IPS (In-Plane Switching) monitor. Your monitor should be calibrated with a monitor calibrator, i.e. a Spyder Display Calibrator.

As explained in a very informative article: “IPS displays were designed to improve on the flaws of LCD technology, primarily in regards to the poor viewing angles and colour reproduction. They do this by simply altering the direction of the pixels within the display (parallel instead of perpendicular pixels). Of course, it really isn’t that simple and neither is explaining it. So let’s just leave it at that ;)”

This product is a composite of a 3mm acrylic, 3mm Dibond and a photographic image. The image is printed on Epson Premium Glossy photo paper which is face mounted to the acrylic using a colour enhancing laminate, specifically designed for this aplication. A very lightweight aliminium composite board is then mounted to the back of the image forming an air tight capsual to protect the image. This is an elegant way of showcasing your images and is often used in galleies around the world.

A quick and easy Vintage look in PhotoShop

I have had a few requests recently on how to give an image that cool vintage look so here is how its done.

Now before I start I'd like to note that this is just one method of many. The look is totally subjective and as the photographer it is up to you to tweak the setting to your taste. I like this method for it's simplicity and effectiveness, plus as its on a separate layer I can reduce, blend or mask it to taste.

With an image open in Photoshop go to the Layers Menu and select "New Adjustment Layer" then select "Levels". This will create a levels adjustment on a separate layer, as seen to the left.
Using adjustment layers is a good way to work in Photoshop as it allows you the flexibility to change your mind or tweak the adjustment further down your workflow.

From the Layers adjustment pallet the channel drop down menu from "RGB" to "Blue"(Feel free to experiment with other channels to create other looks and feels)

Now adjust the "Output levels" of the Blue channel by increasing the Blue shadows and decreasing the Blue highlights (increasing yellow), as shown to the left. The values I used are not fixed in stone, your image may require a slightly different adjustment so experiment until you are happy.

The classic photo frame

Our latest product is the classic photo frame. You can see it on line at http://www.printwild.co.za/photographic_frame/classic_photo_frame.php .

The classic framed photo uses a flat slightly textured frame profile available in coffee bean, black and white. We use either a 44mm frame profile for A2 and smaller images and a 55mm frame profile for larger than A2 framed images. The matt board is a standard matt white and ranges from 50mm to 85mm thick depending on the size of the image.
