I have my personal favorites; however, what "speaks" to me may not be what "speaks" to you. The key is to let what does resonate within you literally move you. Some yoga classes do not use music to assist in staying focused on the practice. Others play what is classified as "new age" music or songs without words...or, words in a language you do not understand. It's all good for those it "speaks" to in their practice. Experience different sounds...you are destined to hear something you did not know about or knew would move you.

Being one who craves variety, I play a blend of music depending on the energy felt or needed at the moment. Not being too concerned about precision of moves, I find it rather liberating to flow with the music. To get on the mat, turn on some music that sings to the soul and just move with it. I consider it a dance on the mat. Plus, I am my best partner in this dance. There's no guessing, no worries of making the wrong move or designated time to end. It is a practice of dancing with the energy of feelings from the heart. Like the ocean's waters, they roll in and out differently each time. Enjoy being your partner on the mat. Detachment becomes easier because you can be the observer of what manifests.

Breathing and moving to the words of John Lennon's, Imagine, adds depth to my practice and the words he sang speak louder. The message the song is intended to share becomes crystal clear. Nothing like moving physically while being moved mentally or emotionally. After all, yoga is a mind, body, spirit practice...work all those parts of Self.

The powerful, yet gentle strokes of the piano in the song, Cristofori's Dream by David Lanz, makes me breathe more deeply. It makes me feel more of the move of each moment. Closing the eyes enables me to see the notes that move me within and feel even more. If you have not done this, try it. Put on some music that makes you grateful you have the gift of hearing...it is a gift. Breathe with the flow of the notes. Move the body in whatever way feels right at that moment. Close your eyes and feel what happens.

Initially, you will most likely do "standard" yoga poses because it is what you know. Keep flowing with the music and you just might find yourself coming up with some creative changes of a pose. Or, you may find yourself staying still in a pose for awhile, yet feeling something moving deeper within. It's all good. Leave the mindset of doing a certain number of moves standing, sitting or lying down out of the mind. Just try a practice of flowing with the music of the moment. Feel life flow through you. Feel the energy of the music inspire you to move or be still. Feel the gift of another being shared with you so you can be moved to share your gifts. Music has the power to move more than the body.

Find or strengthen the gift you have to make your ripple in the waters of life. No one has all the answers and that is actually a good thing. If we knew all there was to know, would life have the same purpose or meaning? Would music still speak to and inspire the hearts of countless people? Would the practice of yoga have the same impact? What would there be to seek? Perhaps this is the way to appreciate the quote, "ignorance is bliss." There is bliss in learning something new and knowing there is more to discover. The power of music is just one the tools to embrace in seeking your bliss.

If interested, here are just a few of my personal favorites: All different styles of music, but all from the heart...just like your practice of life and yoga should be.
When you're young, you can't wait to get older; paradoxically, as you get older, you wish you were younger. One is either looking forward or back. The concept of simply enjoying the present has its fleeting moments; but easily fades in the background of the mind with distraction. If one does not make the conscious effort to make the most of their only moment...now, the see-saw of "should have, could have, would have" will always sway back and forth. Yoga helps you in the aging process. It certainly has helped me.

I can only speak from my experiences; therefore, if I was to explain how yoga helps you before age 40, it would be an assumption. The anatomical benefits speak for themselves. You build strength, improve internal bodily functions, and enjoy more flexibility. From a mental standpoint, the gifts of yoga manifest when you're ready. Life has a way of throwing you a curve ball when least expected. Yoga has a way of making it easier to catch.

In the seven years that I have practiced yoga, there are seven pearls of wisdom that I have gleaned. It would not be truthful to say that I am always successful in polishing each pearl on my "string of wisdom"; however, for the most part, I do. Whenever I digress, I quickly re-learn the truth of what I know and get my "see-saw" back in balance. Perhaps what I am sharing will resonate with you.

Pearl #1: Don't waste time doing what does not make you happy. If you are not true to what resonates in your heart, you are cheating yourself and the world of a precious gift only you have to offer. It takes time to realize this truth and is even harder to follow it. We all have responsibilities. We all have one life to live. You must learn how to say no thank you or have the courage to pursue a dream. Time is priceless...don't waste it. It is not too late. As long as you are living, you have time. Use it wisely.

Pearl #2: Be honest not only with others, but with yourself. If someone does not like to hear the truth, so be it. Living your life based on saying what you think someone wants to hear is failing to be true to yourself and them. The truth does "set you free". If the truth is destined to hurt someone, be kind...but, be honest. The foundation of a relationship should be based on this practice. How can we expect greater sources, such as the leaders of the world, to be this way if we aren't in our own personal world? It is not your job to make others happy. Only one can make oneself happy...how they do it is their journey of life. Cherish your journey.

Pearl #3: Disconnect from people who have negative influence on you. I promote helping others with the intention of teaching them how to help themselves. But, if someone in your life seems to be draining the life out of you...they are. Remember Pearl #1...don't waste time. You will have to determine the "line in the sand" for yourself. To enable another is not helping them; it is reinforcing what is detrimental for many. (And, yes...this includes family) Positive forces unite and become stronger together. The same truth applies to negative. May the positive force be with you! And, regarding family...go back far enough in history and we will realize we are all "family" from some blood line.

Pearl #4: Pursue dreams and goals you have regardless of your age. Write the dream down and determine the first, second and so on, steps to make it happen. If you have a dream that resonates from the heart, the Cosmos has a fascinating way of bringing the necessary sources to make it happen. Be patient in your pursuit. All happens when it is best. To force anything to happen is self-defeating. Life truly is a dream. Make is a great one. Dreams that you know are achievable aren't true dreams, they're goals. Dreams are making your mind extend it's imagination to a new edge of reality.

Pearl #5: Save the judgment of others to the Higher Power. This might sound crazy; but I don't think even God casts judgment. After all, we are extensions of the Source. I feel certain that He is more focused on His creative side than the critical side. We all make mistakes. We are all born in different families, parts of the world, and different mindsets. To think that one way is the only way is contrived. Each life serves a purpose. We teach each other and even the "worst" of us who have existed made a change manifest. Einstein said it best: "All religions are branches of the same Tree." Religion is one of the major reasons for most wars in history. I don't think the Higher Power has nodded in approval for either "side" when He has seen one the most basic commandments repetitiously broken: "Thou shall not kill." Ponder that.

Pearl #6: Forgive. To hold grudges, hang onto past experiences as justifications for current actions and keeping it alive is a waste of life and time. Every experience teaches a lesson. If you do not learn what you were destined to learn, it will manifest again in another form. Forgiveness is not for the source of your issue. Forgiveness is for YOU. When you truly release the anger or whatever other emotion your mind clings to, you will literally feel like a weight has been lifted off your back. Trust me, I know. Until you forgive something or someone, you will remain a hostage to your past. Forgive and forge ahead. Remember, you only have ONE life....toss the baggage that weighs on your mind out into infinite space. Set the intention from the heart to forgive and you will find the way.

Pearl #7: Live and love with passion until the time comes to surrender to death. The body changes, circumstances change and such; however, live with gratitude of having the opportunity of this moment. Use it to give, love, learn, pray, show kindness, admire something of beauty or just be still. Life is like a roller coaster. There are ups and downs and everything in between. To think you can only be happy while at the "peak" of the ride is an illusion. As you get older, you realize that the time in between the "peaks and valleys" is priceless. Enjoy now....everything else is either over or an anticipated experience....not real. Even death is a journey into the unknown. When you live with passion and see life from the bigger picture perspective, you realize there is nothing to fear.

Perhaps these are revelations that you did not expect to read. However, they are revelations that became crystal clear to me after yoga entered my life. Life without yoga is now unfathomable. There is so much to discover! I am grateful for the physical benefits; however, the deepest strength to emerge has been from the heart. Practice yoga, practice mindfulness, practice forgiveness, practice living with passion and you will have your own revelations. Let's unite forces to expand the awareness wider and be remembered as the Age of Yoga!

<![endif]-->
I feel compelled to share a beautiful speech made by our ancestors of Indian descent. They not only talked the talk, they walked the walk. May I, me and many others learn to understand and follow these simple directions of life. Chief Blackfoot is one of the "giants", in my mind, that has shoulders we should stand on to see further so we can be more, live more and love more....

"Believe in the beauty and strength of your own being. Forget the foolish belief that you and your fellow human beings were born evil. Those who would control you all the days of your life on earth perpetuate the belief The Source of Life made things to have a bad spirit.

Live a life of truth and honesty. This makes you a person of quality and dignity. Truth and honesty are the kind of leadership qualities that attracts others.

Give honor and respect to others regardless of age and situation in life. This quality makes you and others worthy of honor and respect, which makes others, feel worthwhile and fulfilled. Honor and respect empowers others so they can win the day. They will return it to you fourfold.

Honor the earth and all that exists. Be strong in this belief and practice it throughout your life because it makes for a world of kindness that binds all the good things of life together in a circle of harmony.

Be humble but not timid. To be humble is to connect yourself to the stars and the entire universe and makes you aware there is something unique about life that is to be enjoyed without fear. We are people from the stars and because of it we are sacred.

Help others realize that life is a dream . . . . A beautiful dream. Dreamers are the butterflies of life and help others to realize their dreams.

Be humorous and help others to enjoy life and the life of others. Humor makes you attractive. The humorous person has many guests and the one who is invited everywhere because of the joy they bring to the gathering.

Never be afraid to talk matters over with those you disagree with or those you love. The gift of language is a miracle and it is meant to be used to live a life of harmony, joy, love, and respect. Use it well and use it often.

What is described here is leadership and happiness in the broadest sense. These are the qualities that make for a great father, grandmother, mother, teacher, grandfather, lover, traditional leader, friend and a great human being. Best of all you can add to this list.

I give these to you in honor and respect: "
The physical practice is critical in keeping the body maintained; however, the less visible layers of Self start to become more apparent. Goals, desires, perspectives and sense of purpose change roles. Initially when one starts yoga, the concept of breathing and doing a good Dog is a dominant thought. Like all things, as time passes and practice improves, what was a chief focus falls from the forefront of intentions. Awareness of different muscles and joints needing focus emerge. Awareness of being present in all forms becomes easier. Awareness of intentions beyond the mat become almost like apparent flickers of light in the mind and heart.

I love to write. I did not even think to start writing until three years after I started practicing yoga. I love to share what has worked for me with others. But, just as your practice changes...so do your efforts to fulfill an internal life purpose. In this case, after writing for three years...I have decided to take a Savasana from blogger writing. I feel honored to have you read my blogs and even more touched when you take the time and effort to let me know that it resonated with you.

I realized that all the time I spend on writing a weekly blog, daily Twitters, LinkedIn communications, and Facebook posts....I am doing exactly the opposite of what I preach! Life is not meant to be spent on the computer. Technology has its place; however, when too much priceless time is spent on it...it better be collective time that served a good purpose. I have reached a new edge in intentions and purpose.

But first, I feel the need to take a Savasana from what I do here to let what I've practiced here settle in and give my written word rest. But, trust me, the purpose of it is to serve the same purpose of my blog...just in a different way. As I let myself surrender to blogger savasana, I feel certain the stillness will manifest into the unmanifested that I dream of. Or, I may find the savasana simply an action to help light up the fire of my words. Time will tell.

If you enjoy reading my words, I will be writing an article series for http://yogamint.com/ in 2012 and have a monthly article posted in this inspirational site http://inspirationaltransformational.com/blog/?p=754. I have been filming for You Tube for three years and that will continue for 2012 with a new twist to it.

I wish all of you peace, happiness within, and passion for what ignites you to live your life to the fullest. Some consider 2012 to be a year to fear. Personally, I consider it a year to grow exponentially. It can be challenging and scary to grow or change; however, ultimately, the result is beneficial. To be stagnant and not change with time is much more detrimental at numerous levels. Taking time to restore, rest, and be still is not the same. So, if you find yourself in a place of transition...mentally, emotionally, or physically...take your savasana off the mat.

It just might be the best time you never lost~

Peace, Love and Kindness to All...May you discover your gifts to expand the positive energy the Source has given you to share.

This revelation emerged as I was on the plane headed to one of my favorite places, Sedona, Arizona. I tried different arm and wrist moves and a twist to get the kinks out as I felt the body compress a bit. It helped, but was not exactly what I needed and then I found myself getting impatient with two more hours of flight to go.

I found myself desperately wanting...needing to do a Downward Dog! Well, if I even attempted it, I would have my rear end in someone's face and secondly, I am sure someone (of no yoga experience) would think I was up to something suspicious. Not a good way to expose the magic of yoga to the potential yogis!

Then, it came to me. Envision myself in Downward Dog. Kind of like...BE the Dog.

I closed my eyes, inhaled as I envisioned myself raising my arms and found myself doing a mental Sun Salutation. Once I was in my Dog, I envisioned the muscles engaged from the forearms down to the heels. I even imagined pressing firmly down and enjoying the reversal of blood flow. I took a few minutes to get in the mode; however, I used my memory bank stored in my body's cells to "remember" how it feels. I had to get my rational mind quiet, for it instinctively was eager to remind me I was not actually practicing yoga. Then, my intuitive side would respond quietly with the question..."based on what reality?"

I did different moves in my mind and physically linked it all with my breathing. Of course, it was not quite the same as the "real" thing; however, it did remind me that your reality is what you make of it. Imagination has unlimited potential of manifestation. Now, because of this unique reminder, I know I can expand my imagination when doing an actual physical practice. The body has an infinite source of energy resources that are available to experience. Simply start at a physical focal point of awareness and let what you envision emerge.
An interesting observation was that I tried to do handstand in my envisioned practice. Just like I stay up for a few seconds in physical mode, the same thing happened in the mind. I made several mental attempts to stay in handstand, consciously aware that I would not fall physically; however, could not stay up mentally. I have to assume it is because I have not instilled that in my physical cell's memory bank. Or, perhaps there is an unknown fear or weakness that I have not unveiled. Or, maybe I will be able to do the physical handstand once I master the mental one! I will practice this technique and see what happens. After all, it really is mind over matter. Your reality is self-imposed or self-envisioned...make your choice.

Consider using the practice of envisioned yoga when you need to do a move, but physical restrictions make it not possible at the moment. Do the actual breathing with it and focus on the details. It is a great meditation for it works your body from the mental standpoint and tests your mental "edges" of imagination. When you get to do the physical practice, you will have a deeper understanding of the benefits and beauty of yoga. Every aspect of you needs practice and exercise of some kind. Once you do this, you will ignite a revelation that yoga truly unites mind, body and spirit.

Flip through a magazine and you will see a slew of advertisements of products that have the solution for what you seek. The selection of vitamins appear to be expanding on the grocery shelves. It appears our food lacks what the pills provide. And, of course, the pharmacy industry is doing what it does best...influence the necessary minds to promote the latest and greatest medicine. It really has gone to the extreme.

Tired...don't worry...grab a bottle of 5 hour energy or a triple espresso or any slew of "energy" drinks on the market. Interesting that a report hasn't made the press that visits to the ER have gone from 1,000 to 13,000 in just four years due to these beverages. It can be a hassle when your energy is low and the concept of getting a little more sleep is inconvenient. So much easier to take that "magic" juice (or, pill) and get what you want...for a little while...until the body moves it out.

Stressed...again, don't worry...LOTS of choices for this issue. The list of drugs prescribed is too long to list. Mind too busy? Again, long list of drugs to get that brain to slow down. Interesting that the power of conscious breathing has not been widely shared to the general public. Then again, that would adversely affect potential pharmaceutical sales. Breathe vs. taking a pill? Now, that sounds too simple.

Here is a concept to consider for your energy levels and stress...consider yoga a great visit to the "medical" office. The best part is...there's no waiting and you can leave the mat without stressing about the bill! There is a catch though. You have to actually do the breathing and the moving to get what you need. If you are stressed out, breathe and move slowly and consciously focus on letting go. It takes practice, but the benefits are truly cumulative down to the cellular level. If you need some more energy, consider being more physically active and build up some action in that brain by stimulating the release of hormones that start the chain reaction in the body to have energy. Certain breathing techniques also ignite energy.

Medicine does help a lot of issues. I know, I used to have to take it for epilepsy. However, the swift signing of a prescription for just about anything has gone too far. And, like it or not, each of us have to take responsibility for our health. Drugs are not the best answer for everything...they're just the easier solution. The other options require effort, time, and conscious awareness. Eating and drinking whatever is most convenient is great on the front end; however, the consequences of unhealthy habits have a consequence later on. The concept of "everything in moderation" has been replaced by the concept of immediate and maximum results.

It does come at a cost. You just won't know what you will be buying to "fix" it until the engine that keeps you running decides to stall. Yoga, unlike any other physical exercise, is something you can do for life. It just keeps on giving long after you leave the mat. Stress becomes manageable; energy and overall well-being becomes stable; awareness of what this body you reside in can do to help it will emerge.

It takes a little more time and effort, but it works. If I was a doctor, I would prescribe at least 2-3 hours a of yoga a week to everyone. But, I'm not. I do teach yoga, practice it and know that it works. A lot of people know it works. We just need to spread the word further. It really would be a much more peaceful planet if everyone practiced yoga.

It is time to get back to moderation. Drink plenty of water. Get rest. Get some sunshine. Get off the train that is rushing to nowhere...and get on the mat. Your body and mind will thank you. Do enough yoga and the day will come when you wonder how you lived without it.

It is not unusual for one to find something they really enjoy and delve themselves into it for awhile. As time wears on, the novelty wears off and so does the drive. Yoga is no different if you let it fall in the same routine. Practice long enough and a time will emerge when your body let's you feel the neglect of not doing the physical moves as much as desired.

Life seems to get in the way and the classic excuse of not having the time to practice emerges from the left hemisphere. (The rationalizing side) If you take a moment of observing what you feel after that justification, you will "hear" the right hemisphere (the creative side) beg to differ. Then, when you actually hit the mat and immerse yourself in a practice, the realization emerges that the gap of time between practices was a bit too long. You will feel the gratitude of the cells as they seem to flow more freely within you. You will feel a little lighter, yet more grounded. The practice stays with you long after you leave the mat.

Like Ganga White said in Yoga Beyond Belief, "yoga doesn't take time, it gives time." Until you get on the mat and practice, you won't truly understand these words. I have practiced for seven years. Every time I let the gap between practices get too long, I re-learn the truth of this quote. Thus, I understand the importance of keeping the gaps between physical practices short. Paradoxically, shortening the physical gaps make it easier to broaden the mental gaps of internal noise.

Unlike the body, the mind can chatter all day and all night if you let it. It seems to have a mind of its own. But, understand this...the mind is separate from the brain. It takes more effort to get the brain stronger than the body. The mind is like a roommate with the brain in that tough skull housing; but know this, the mind is the owner. With a regular physical yoga practice, the brain has to focus on breathing and balance. Keep it busy on that enough times and you slowly disengage its habitual chatter. Eventually, you will realize it exists to work for you...not the other way around.

Add meditation to your routine of self-wellness practices, and you will discover the joy of longer gaps of time between thoughts. Those precious gaps give your heart a chance to whisper to the mind. The mind can then pass the message to the brain. A whisper from the heart is truth and goodness...listen to it.

So, bottom line is this: keep the gaps between yoga practices shorter to discover broader gaps of stillness in the mind. Simple. Practice...breathe...break the gap to make the space in between the heart and mind dissipate.

It takes practice and time for the subtle, yet powerful benefits to embed themselves in the various places of the Self. The physical benefits are usually the first ones that you notice. Truth be told, it is fun to be stronger and in better shape. However, it is the deeper layers of the cellular structure that are not obvious until situations arise that really show what your yoga practice has accomplished.

Before I found yoga, I went through a period of having panic attacks. If you have not had one, it is crippling at all levels. The heart starts to feel a slight piercing of a knife in the middle of it. That pierce turns into a tight grip and it feels like the heart is using every ounce of strength to squeeze any blood it can to keep you alive. Your sense of control goes haywire and the energy of fear overtakes every cell. Rational thinking is covered with a dark blanket. You want to escape. The problem is...you cannot escape from your mind.

It was shortly after I started doing yoga that the panic attacks receded into non-existence. I never expected to have to face another one as long as I lived. Wrong.

A lot of us have issues with family. The holidays are notorious for causing stress. Personality differences, past conflicts and decreased tolerance levels are common instigators. Granted, we learn a lot from family experiences; however, when nothing seems to change...it makes it hard to manifest the movie image of the family that adores being together. I am one of those people who will honestly say that family has been one of my chief sources of stress. But, that is a whole other subject.

I share this because after Thanksgiving, panic unexpectedly reared its ugly head again. It may have been six years, but I knew that feeling in the heart too well. I had just gotten onto the plane to head home after spending five long days with family. It had some good points; but, the truth is, I had to work really hard to keep my patience and tolerance in check. I was thrilled to get on the plane and anxiously awaited for take off. Then, without warning, that familiar sense of pain started to knock on my chest. I knew this feeling too well. I think all the emotions and thoughts that I controlled felt the released grip when I gratefully got on the plane and decided it was time to get out.

The magnificent thing is that I now had unknown gifts of yoga under my belt. Somewhere along my yoga journey, my conscious breathing, meditation practice, and learning about the body's inner workings made it possible for me to stop what I used to crumble on the ground to.

Upon feeling the heart pain and realizing what was around the corner, I chose to face the fear...not let it take over. I became the observer of the sense of pain in the heart. I breathed in deeply and slowly and focused on inhaling calmness into my lungs. As I felt the sensations as a detached observer instead of a helpless victim, the sensations faded away. It was fascinating to discover the power yoga gave my mind to stop what used to stop me.

The cumulative benefits of yoga are individual and endless. It is normal to practice and sometimes wonder if it really made a difference. Sometimes we, including myself, are not as consistent in our physical practice as we could be. Sometimes practices or meditations are short; however, don't guilt yourself. Everything you do has cumulative effects and finds residence within you. Just keep practicing....what you need will come.

Your new inner resident may not be as obvious as the ones that reside on the exterior. But, know this, when you need a little help, your quiet "neighbor" will be there. All you have to do is breathe, open the door, and let the source of yoga "magic" help you help yourself.
It is normal to initially focus on the general concept of how to do the basic moves. Then, you have to remember to breathe; however, each practice helps the flow of breathing and moving in an integrated manner become easier. It takes practice to learn; however, just like most things, it will start to click and it become less intimidating.

It is easy to forget the finer details of the experience when you are dwelling on the overall sequence of poses. This mindset tends to coincide with the general approach in living this day in age. Get the job done, e-mails answered, body fed, chill out when a spare moment appears and start all over again. Sound familiar? Don't worry, most of us are in the same boat. It is part of life; but it can be changed. Sometimes we get so busy getting the "to-do" list done, we overlook the details.

Details really do matter.

Let's dwell on one pose most commonly known and practiced. The pose is Downward Dog. This is a great pose to feel in between other poses; however, it is a beautiful pose to feel in full detail.

Feel your fingertips, palms and wrists engaged. Notice the sensations of each fingertip one at a time. Feel the muscles wrapped around your forearm and the elbow. Feel the subtle flow of warm blood seep into your head the longer you stay in the pose. The back is strong and the tailbone is getting an arch that opens space around the sacrum. The skin, the muscles, the ligaments, the joints and the bones are all individually and unitedly being engaged. You're breathing deeply into the lungs and feel the skin expand and soften with the beautiful exchange of inhales and exhales.

Take the time to close your eyes and feel your body in micro-units. Use your imagination to shift your sense of where to feel the details. The more you focus on the details, the more you realize there is to feel, see, and experience. Details are what separate the good from the great in most everything.

Yoga is no exception. If anything, details rule in yoga....if you make the time and effort to notice.

As you transition from Downward Dog to your next move, feel the shift in balance, internal heat, weight distribution and heart beat. Whatever detail you notice, dwell on it for a few moments. As you let yourself really feel it, you just might find that you start to feel more somewhere else. Imagine breathing through your pores. Feel the tingling sensation of the skin as it lengthens, builds heat or disperses beads of sweat. The back is one long extension of the brain stem from the neck down to the lower lumbar portion of the spine. Loaded with nerve endings that communicate throughout the entire body, the sensations you can feel when you pay attention to them are endless.

Enjoy and cherish your details.

To get more great information about yoga and how you can make the most of each practice, this is a great site to keep your journey of self-discovery growing stronger.... http://www.gaiamtv.com/

Enjoy your journey of revelations~
It is easy to get in a monotonous routine of habitual moves or thoughts. This truth applies to more than just your yoga practice. Being a teacher of yoga, I introduce new ways to pursue a move or get to a new edge. After having the same students for over three years, I assumed they understood the most fundamental part of yoga...breathing. A brand new student to yoga ignited me to ask the class: "Does everyone know how to practice ujjayi (ocean) breath?"

To my surprise (and disappointment in myself), most of the class admitted they did not. It was a humbling reminder that it is imperative to re-visit the foundation of what you build yourself on...whatever it is. One can add various structures on this base; however, it is wise to check on the foundation to make sure you're on solid ground. This realization about the folks I have been teaching was a divine reminder that they did not necessarily make it to the class that explained breathing. So, I taught them as if they (and me) were all beginners. We went back to our ABC's of yoga.

So, let's discuss the three points that help you build a solid foundation upon to build your yoga practice on. I prefer the KISS philosophy in just about everything. Plus, it has nothing to do with being "stupid", so my translation of KISS is: Keep it Simple Soulmate. Let class begin.

A is for attitude. Whether it is your first or you've lost count yoga class, your attitude of having a beginner's mind is a must. A beginner's mind is also known as a Zen mindset. The way to do this is to be aware of each moment. Focus on feeling the body's sensations when you're in a pose. Feel the sensation of the breath flow in and out. Leave the critical aspect of the ego outside the door. Yoga is a lifetime practice which means there is no finish line to cross. The sooner you understand that, the easier it is to enjoy the practice without an agenda. Just learn, baby, learn.

Have you seen the awe in a child's eyes when they experience or see something new? Can you remember that feeling you once had as a kid? Yoga is helping me remember. Each yoga practice is different. It may seem the same based on the poses you do; however, that is impacted by your attitude. When make a shift in perspective to experience something deeper, a lot happens. You can start to feel the heart beating, the muscles tightening or loosening, and more. The forward fold is discovered to be much more than just bending over.

Then, you can become aware of the mind working. But instead of it running amuck with an onslaught of thoughts, by being an observer who is learning, you become able to observe the thoughts that emerge.

Being a student of yoga and life, imagine your thoughts being written on a chalkboard. Grab that square eraser and wipe the slate clean. Let the mind write what comes and you observe what is written, then erase again. Sooner or later, the mind will tire of this task of writing on the board.

It is much easier to talk freely than having to write it down. Notice what happens when you change roles with the mind simply by making it do the work and you erase it. The attitude of being the observer and letting whatever sensations arise be a source of learning makes it a much richer practice.

B is for breathing. There are various breathing techniques out there that achieve different results. To stay with my KISS philosophy, it is best to master "ocean breath". A great analogy for this type of breathing is that you sound like Darth Vader from Star Wars. Focus on inhaling in a slow, steady pace and equally on the exhale. In yoga, a great way to remember to focus on breathing is what you are doing in your moves. When you are starting a move that opens your chest or has you reaching up, you inhale to receive. When you are going into a move that closes the chest or moves your body downward, exhale to give back what you took. It is a beautiful flow of give and take.

Great breathing feeds your body and mind what it needs to function at its best. We all know what it feels like when you do not eat enough and you start to feel weak because of the drop in sugar levels. Consider filling your lungs with air as critical as filling your belly. This may sound like a silly statement; however, there are a lot of people who have forgotten the power of breathing. Your belly should rise and fall when you breathe.

Let's go back before we were kids and we were babies. If you notice, babies' bellies rise and fall when they breathe. Perhaps that is where the saying, "sleep like a baby" came from...for that rhythmic and deep breathing is very calming and imperative for the entire body to get what it needs. If you check this link on breathing, it will give you a very explicit explanation of what goes on with our most basic function...breathing.

C is for calmness. You will notice that if you practice A and B, you will ignite C. So to integrate a little mathematics in our basics of yoga...A + B = C!
As you erase the thoughts of deadlines and goals to get to a certain level by a certain time, you relieve that internalized pressure. When you consciously breathe in with the attitude of nourishing the body, you induce physical and mental calmness. There is a lot of strength in being calmer.

We all know what happens when we're stressing to get something done by a certain time. This state of panic and worry usually impairs our better judgement and the ultimate results of the task.

As you re-learn what it is like to feel calm without utilizing external sources, it permeates into every cell of your body. As your cellular structure gets the oxygen and positive chemicals ignited from the mindset that all is well, they function better.

It may seem extreme to take the practice of yoga to the cellular level; however, your cells are the foundation of what you are physically comprised of. Give the cells what they need and they will happily return the favor. Deprive them of what they need and they will do what they can, but will eventually weaken and surrender.

Now when you get on your mat to practice yoga, remember your ABC's. Have the attitude of a beginner, breathe with purpose, and let the calming effects flow through you. Explore new ways of doing poses and reaching new edges. Take some time to learn more about yoga's history or the anatomical benefits it has on you. It is fun to learn; especially when it is what truly intrigues you and there are no tests to pass.

Knowledge is great; however, don't forget the core foundation of what got seeing new horizons. By allowing your roots grow deeper in solid ground, you just might find that you can lean just a little bit further than you ever expected. Remember your ABC's and the rest will fall into place...

Being a "baby boomer", I feel grateful for experiencing life before technology took off like it has in the past twenty years. For those of you in the same age bracket, you will appreciate what I am saying. For those who are younger, I hope that you truly understand the power of trust, time, and tenacity.

Just to stroll down memory lane, I feel compelled to share some of the things I took for granted; however, but now truly appreciate the value. Some people may think it is better to get things done faster; however, the truth is, time seems to do what it needs to keep up with the new pace. Time is priceless and you cannot get it back. The same is for your life. Why rush it? When you take your time in whatever you are doing, you will glean more than you know.

Here's some things I remember and understand the value of these standards.
~Cable television did not exist. All four channels went off after the 10 pm news. Unless you were compelled to read, you went to bed. A good night's sleep was a basic.

~Cell phones and computers did not exist. The concept of "I can't live without my phone" did not exist. There was a lot more to focus on.

~Dinner was cooked on the stove. Microwaves did not exist. The toaster oven was around; but, that was not to make a meal. Meals actually were comprised of a balanced diet. Obesity was not rampant; and consequently, neither was diabetes. Connections?

~As a kid, we would play outside until the sun went down. Our immune systems were stronger because the concept of getting dirty was not feared. Using an anti-bacterial soap to eliminate bacteria was saved for the hospitals.

~Knowing how to write and spell was a basic. To learn that it is being considered to eliminate teaching how to write in cursive is a disservice. It actually atrophies a part of the brain.

~Most of us did not feel the necessity to lock our doors, much less have alarm systems. Theft existed, as it always has; however, the fear of it was not rampant. Sometimes I wonder if it really is worse when you integrate the population ratio in the statistics. All I do know is that fear is alive and well.

~A pharmaceutical approach was not the first line of defense when an emotional or mental issue arose. Emotions were expected to be experienced, not suppressed or neutralized. The concept of having a pill to address whatever bothered you did not exist. Now, it ranges from depression to not getting aroused enough to have sex.
FYI: Just learned that if a man finds it necessary to take Viagra to "get it up", he better have his heart checked out. Failure of blood flow down there is often indicative of a possible blood blockage elsewhere.

~Respect was earned by your actions and not automatic. It was understood that you had to "walk the walk" instead of just talking about it. To demand respect without earning it makes it worthless. To utilize fear to get it is downright shameful.

~Music was from the heart. This mention is not intended to slight the talented folks that are sharing their gift now. Rather, this is to remind many of how music spoke to your heart. When a singer sang, it was their voice...no embellishment. When an album was made, the entire group played the song together vs. recording in separate increments. You could feel the collective energy of what was being sang and played. I believe that is why so many of the songs of the 70's are re-made. Unlike most music now, there are songs that you can listen to hundreds of times and enjoy it like it was the first time. Priceless.

~Speaking face to face was the standard. The concept of ending a relationship via text or e-mail was impossible. Conflict was a part of life, as it always will be; however, it involved talking about it and finding a compromise. To embarrass someone to the masses via You Tube or Facebook did not happen. (no computers to do it with) Learning to look someone in the eye and be honest made you a better person.

There are many more points that I could make about what I have experienced in the past 40 plus years; however, you get the idea. I am truly grateful to have the mentality of the earlier years. When I catch myself getting worried about my status in the "rat race", I take a step out of it. My time slows down and I get a lot more done. Not just chores or work, but more importantly, sharing life with others.

After all, when it is all said and done, I would think most of us would want people who crossed our paths in life to feel gratitude of their experience.

claim code:37EC6PPGBPPJ

Being a writer of truth, I express what is true for me. Being a teacher of yoga, I have been graciously blessed to witness the changes that emerge over time for the people I share the journey with. It is so much more than getting to that "advanced" pose. It is more than being able to stay balanced longer. It is a practice that slowly integrates in your mind and heart. It expands your awareness beyond your initial capacity.

Yoga ignites an inner calmness with conscious breathing. Your physical moves get those muscles lengthened and stronger. As the exterior gets stronger, strength and flexibility goes deeper. The skies become bluer, the grass greener, and the gift of life more beautiful. Passion for what speaks to your heart is ignited. Purpose of life extends beyond paying the bills. Life falls into place in a magical way full of synchronicity. As you learn to pursue physical "edges" or surrender in passive moves, you learn how to truly live. Life is a dance of moves, choices, challenges, and unexpected gifts.

Yoga is the same. Yoga expands your capacity to feel the gratitude for where you are now. Yoga expands your mindset to learn more, feel more, share more...help others more. It is not an accident that the word yoga translated means union. The irony is that as the physical, mental, and spiritual Self unites...it expands broader. Just like the universe is in a constant state of expanding, so is a yogi. The more you learn, the epiphany arises that you know so little. Yet, the joy of true learning and growing expands.

A beautiful example of synchronicity and the power of sincere intention at work manifested at a yoga class I taught. Having a collection of various stones that serve different purposes, I brought them for each person to pick one that appealed to them. I asked them not to think about it, but just feel which one "spoke" to them.
Each one took one and I had them read the meaning of the significance and purpose of the stone.

Now, know this...I am no expert on stones. I have limited knowledge about what they can do. Prior to yoga, never thought of them from an energetic perspective. However, after a few years of practice and opening the mind to concepts beyond the books, I started a stone collection. I know now that EVERYTHING is energy....how and what purpose you use it for is what manifests changes.

As each person read the stone's purpose, their jaw dropped Each stone's purpose was distinctly different and even the physical needs of each person was in the stone! The class consisted of six people and all six people had never been exposed to stones. Yet, they innately selected what was just what they needed. Without yoga, I never would have learned about stones. I never would have crossed paths with these lovely people and they might not have been exposed to something they needed. Nothing happens by accident. Timing is everything. Yoga gets you present so that time takes care of everything else.

Expand your breathing. Expand your expectations. Expand your gratitude. Expand your awareness. Expand your pre-conceived notions of what has remained stagnant in your mind. Expand your purpose for living. Choosing not to expand keeps you constricted. It is so much more comfortable to have more space...in the mind and heart.

"Practice yoga and it's all coming." This quote by Pattabhi Jois, a great yogi, means more to me each year. For it is true. Life gets better each year of practice and it is still coming! So, I must strongly encourage that you get on that mat for the first time or the "who's counting anymore" time and expand what is ready.

Much peace and love to all...for we are united. Let your practice of yoga integrate that truth and the feeling of it deep into your cellular structure. It will do its magic, like the stones, and give you what you need.

It could not express more beautifully one of the "facts of life". I re-read it from time to time to come back to what matters.

"Ready or not, someday life as you know it will come to an end. There will be no more sunrises; no minutes, hours or days left. All of the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned, what you owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and 'to-do' lists will have expired. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter from where you came, or on which side of the tracks you lived. At the end of your road, it won't matter whether you were beautiful, or brilliant; even your gender and skin color will be of no value.

Then what WILL matter? How will the true worth of your days on this earth be measured? What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage and personal sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your level of competence, but your genuine character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many of them will feel a lasting loss when you're gone. What will matter are ot your memories, but the memories that live in those you love, and in those who loved you. What matters is how long you will be remembered; by whom, and for what.

Living a life that matters does not happen by accident. It is never a matter of mere circumstances, but of choice. For each of us must choose to live a life that really matters."

Powerful truth. Do your actions, words, and intentions illustrate a life that matters?

Our home is Earth. Nature is our Mother. Listen to what she is begging us to do. Just like we had to keep our rooms clean...take it to a broader sense in regards to the planet. Failure to listen had consequences. This is no different. I take that back; it is different in the fact that the consequences affect all of us. And, the ramifications (punishment to learn the lesson) last much longer than a few days. It won't matter if you are poor, middle class or the leader of a country. Mother Nature excludes no one.

I will state it clearly. Those who are guilty of these demands know who they are.

Stop doing what you know is wrong. Stop using the excuse of "the stockholder" has to be kept happy. Stop being cruel to animals. Stop severing countless trees that give us oxygen to breathe. Stop making "deals under the table" that serve a select few. Stop pushing drugs as the answer to every problem. Stop focusing on killing a select few as one step closer to ever elusive peace. Stop wasting time and money making changes that serve what lobbyists advocate. Stop the distortion of the news and brainwashing the masses who watch it. Stop eating fast food that is known to be bad for you...it makes you fat faster, sick faster, and probably die faster. Stop complaining and start doing something that will help start a change for the better. Stop tossing waste out in the street or yard. Stop using “road rage” as a means to release stress. I could go on…but, you get the point.

Take a moment to take a deep inhale and exhale. Take a moment to see the bigger picture. Your world is an increment of the whole world. Do what you can to make your piece more at peace.

Make choices that make life better for all. It is as simple as that. “Be the change."

It may not be exactly the same as before, but what you used to do or know can be experienced with a new perspective. In this case, I am talking about blocks. As a kid, it was fun to play with the blocks and use your imagination in creating something. Take that memory of creativity with the blocks and bring it to your yoga practice.

I used the blocks when I started practicing yoga; however,I stopped using them when I thought I did not need them anymore. Several years of practice later...I've realized, just like the blocks I played with as a kid, they're not just for building a foundation. The best use of the block is to experience a new sensation of balance, utilization of a different muscle, and the re-ignition of the creative source in the mind. I thought I was too experienced (old...in kid mindset)to use blocks. I was wrong.

Here are some ways to use those blocks in your practice. Once you get started, you are destined to discover something new!

1. In forward fold, stand each foot squarely on a block. Observe the initial challenge of integrating balance. Inhale as you raise the arms up and exhale on a slow forward fold. Notice that the hands may go further than you expected. Gravity really does make a difference! You can even place two small weights in front of you to use to pull down further. It helps you engage the arms while further lengthening the hamstrings. The intention is not to lift the weights, but rather use them as an anchor.

2. Do repetitions of Downward Dog and Up Dog with your hands on blocks instead of the mat. You get a deeper arch in both directions and engage a few more arm muscles by using the block to grip on. Feels great on the back.

3. When doing bridge, set each foot on a block. Use the same concept of getting the feet as close to your fingertips as possible. When you lift up that pelvis in bridge, you will go higher and give that back a nicer arch. Try it first without the blocks; then, add the blocks. You will notice the difference. If able, link hands to engage arms and back while in block bridge. Keep those knees in line with the hips and feel the greater opening of the chest while in the pose.

4. Still in bridge mode, if you have 3 blocks, use two for the feet and one to put between the knees. With that block between the knees, you keep the right width distance and feel the glutes get a little more action.

5. Thread the needle: Again, amazing difference by elevating yourself a few inches. Place each hand on a block. Follow the same principle of keeping hands in line with shoulders and knees in line with hips. As you inhale and raise one arm up, keep the other arm engaged as you hold gently on block. Reach high and thread that arm through until you settle onto the shoulder. Keep other hand on block and notice a little deeper twist by doing this. Or, do repetitions of thread the needle with the block.

6. Use those blocks as you practice Warrior 3. Place the blocks so that they will be tall and lift one leg up for Warrior 3; however, keep hands on blocks. Get neck in line with spine, dorsi flex foot, and take time experiencing a full engaged extended leg without the wobble. Use the balance to determine if abdomen is parallel to floor vs. tilted. As you feel the foundation solidify from the ground up, then extend the arms. Notice the difference of the practice as you take time to experience each nuance of the pose.

7. While in cobbler pose, do the ususal process of bringing feet together as close to the body as possible while keeping a straight spine. Then, place blocks underneath feet. You will immediately notice a little more edge integrated in the hips. Keep spine straight and gently bring yourself forward...leading with heart over legs. You may not go as far as you usually do because you are lengthening muscles from a different angle. Enjoy the difference.

The possibilities are unlimited. Just get those blocks out and get that creative mind moving with the body. Just like it was fun to build something different, it seems even more fun feeling something differently...just by using your blocks! Enjoy your practice while living the joy of a child's mindset simply by playing with blocks~

The two are not linked; therefore, do not assume a connection. This is a comparison of two practices with deep roots in the history of mankind. A tree is the perfect image to compare them to. Both have a beginning somewhere; however, along the way, branches have extended in numerous directions. The common invisible thread shared is that all branches reach for the Ultimate Source that nourishes them. Each branch names itself and declares what makes it different and possibly better than the branch right next to it. Thus, the emergence of conflict within a united entity appears.

In the yoga "tree", a lot of different styles of practice have and continue to emerge. Each yoga branch has a slightly or significant difference from the others; however, each is still a practice. The beauty of the tree is that it gives choices for the "leaves" (individuals) to grow from. In the relatively short time that I have practiced yoga, I am amazed at how rapidly different types, or "branches" of yoga that have emerged. So many choices...and choices are good. However, I also feel it is somewhat limiting to pick a "branch" and disregard the others.

Personally, I am not one who likes labels, or to be "pigeon-holed" in a certain place. Regarding religion, when asked what I am...I answer, spiritual. If I had to choose one "rule" to live by from a religious perspective, it would simply be "the golden rule". That one "rule" pretty much covers it all. The world would a lot different if everyone integrated living by that one rule alone. All the other commandments, laws, and whatever other name that is applicable coincide with this rule. Unfortunately, other dynamics imposed by the ego, belief that one way is the only way and fear of consequences cause that one rule to remain often in the shade.

As I have learned, practiced and taught yoga, I have been blessed to experience different styles. What has evolved in my approach is identical to my mindset of religion. When asked, "what type of yoga do you practice?", I simply state it is a fusion of many. Being certified by the Yoga Alliance, I have to declare what style I teach. So, I define it as Hatha for there is no box to check that states: Yoga with No Name.

I find that fusion keeps the doors open to the sixth sense of intuition. The energy of the class or student varies from day to day. To stay in one mode of practice could cheat them of a revelation that might have emerged if they weren't taught from a flexible mindset. As most know, a yoga practice goes beyond the physical. It becomes a lifestyle. I find the "golden rule" very applicable to my approach as a teacher.

It is not my intention to demote, deflate, or degrade any style of yoga; nor, any branch of religion, for that matter. Instead, I think it is important to connect with what speaks to your heart. We are individuals, with different backgrounds, needs, and purpose. Yet, we are all interconnected with an innate desire to extend our "branches" out and upward. The key is to remember that you are not the only branch or the best branch. What works for one may not work for another and that is perfectly fine. It is not a negative reflection of the branch. It is simply a reflection that it is not what speaks to a certain "leaf's" heart.

There is no right or wrong way to practice (excluding moves that are dangerous for your body). As long as you're breathing, you can practice yoga and you can pray to your Higher Power. Set the intention to experience what speaks to you and let others do the same for themselves. If you look very closely at a tree, you notice the beauty of each leaf. Step back and you see the beauty of a branch. Step back even further and you see the beauty of the entire Tree. You can't isolate its beauty to one particular branch...but, rather you can only see it in its collective entirety.

Remember that when you try different teachers, yoga styles, or whatever else comes your way, it is an experience. It may or may not speak to you; but, know that it speaks to someone else. There is power in choices, beauty in change and growth in experience. There might be a name for what I just listed; but, I like to keep it simple and will call it life.

If not, take a listen to get in the moment. Get that mind focused on what you're reading now...not what's next on the eternal list. I know it is not just me, but time seems to be slipping faster than ever before. A week feels like it is finished in the matter of a day. Looking forward to the weekend is somewhat a bittersweet anticipation. It comes and goes by so quickly.

Technology, the mindset of getting immediate results, and multi-tasking has reached a point of an ironic setback for us. The purpose, I thought, that advanced technology would provide is more time. More time to enjoy time with family, friends, or whatever makes you happy. Instead, the list of tasks to complete has gotten longer and has to be done quicker to keep up. Something is seriously wrong with what is being ingrained in the collective mindset.

What yoga does for me and many others who take a piece of precious time to practice is that it stills time. It does not matter if you do an hour or fifteen minutes of yoga. The practice of yoga gets you in the "zone". Consider it the zone of the moment. By being aware of each breath, each move, each nuance of sensation, you will get a grip on the slippage of time. It is well known to stay in the Now and not dwell on the past or future. It is easy to say; however, actually making it a reality is another story. Simply doing yoga makes it happen. No agenda, no deadline, make sure you turn off that phone, and just practice. It is that simple.

Every day that goes by is one less day to live....really live. Yoga ignites a revelation from time to time in that busy mind. Usually, the revelation is a sense of well-being, a dream your tech savvy mind suppressed, or simply a sense of true gratitude for the moment.

Every day is a gift. Treat it as such. When we're given something that we love, we embrace it, feel lucky to get it and would not consider doing anything to lose it. I think our time is much more valuable than the latest IPhone. You can always get a new phone; but you will never get the moment that just passed you by.

Slow time down with practice. Practice yoga, practice meditation, practice being still...it may be difficult at first. But, that is the beauty of practicing. I'm not a believer in pursuing or even achieving perfection; however, I am a big believer in the power and beauty of change. What you could not physically do one day changes with practice. A certain mindset you had one moment can dissipate with a conscious exhale. Don't let time slip by you and pull you forward. It is a journey of learning a new way to do a pose, seeing things from a different perspective and many other assortment of changes. When I teach my students, I read quotes, stories, or do sequences that generate the energy I sense is needed. Ironically, what I sense they need, I need too. Definitely a win-win situation.

I recently learned that my calmness and approach to teaching gives the illusion that I am in a constant state of peace. After talking to a long term student and friend about some issues that were bothering me, she shocked me with the statement..."I can't believe you ever get angry"! I immediately purged a bunch of stuff that has been bothering me and saw the relief in her face that I get pissed off just like anyone else. I'm a yogi, not a saint. Whew...feels good to get that off my chest!

Here's my revelation for this week: Unless you have become "enlightened", you will experience all ranges of emotions. We may practice yoga, but we're still humans with emotions. The difference, at least for me, is that it is short lived. Prior to a yoga lifestyle, anger, frustration, or even excitement would last longer or on a higher scale. Now, it still manifests; however, is more balanced. Emotions don't hang on as long. Personally, I cannot decide if that is an age thing, a yoga mindset or a fusion of both. Here's one more confession...I don't even care to become enlightened. Sounds initially great to be in constant bliss...but, what's left to experience or learn while here? I'll save my "bliss mode" for the afterlife. My feelings about that could change at some point; however, that is the beauty of living without a rigid mindset of what's right and what's wrong. Focus on now.

Truth about me: I am full of gratitude for all that I have in my life. Second truth, I have frustration with others that do not or cannot practice gratitude. I get angry with the greed, corruption, and distortion of the truth from the media and government. I get agitated with the mindset of the "technology savvy" group that state they "can't live without their cell phone." Really? Since when did a cell phone give life? I get disgusted the more I learn how food is processed so the corporations can get more money. And, don't even get me started on the pharmaceutical industry. I get aggravated by my own family members that don't seem to "get it". Then, I have to get myself back on track and keep the judging to a minimum. Lord knows I have enough to dredge up if one wanted to throw stones back at me. I have my own life to live without worrying how others are choosing to live theirs.

One secret is to get centered into your own well-being. One person cannot change the world. It truly is a collective effort. It starts with one and is passed on to the next and so on. Get enough on the collective mindset and the tipping point of awareness will be ignited. I do believe in the goodness that resides in the heart of all people. It is just a matter of igniting the flame brigher. That is where my intention as a yoga teacher comes in.

The practice and teaching of yoga keeps me on track. Sometimes I wish I would not get agitated or impatient at times. But, it does serve a purpose. To not feel the same emotions that others feel would make compassion a challenge. Just like the saying goes, "you have to walk a mile in someone else's shoes to understand." To act like I don't have any challenges or fears would be totally conflictive with one of yoga's 8 limbs...truthfulness.

I seek balance. Everything in moderation, as Buddha said. Anything in the extreme has negative effects. So what is my life as a yogi? It is a journey of love, fun, learning, revelations, and gratitude for each challenge and gift. Add some negative emotions from time to time and the see-saw stays pretty balanced. To have it any other way would not be a very active life. But, that is my choice. It works for me. I simply wish that others find what works for them to truly live life to the fullest...yogi or not.

Just remember what Mark Twain said: "20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by what you didn't do vs. what you did do...explore, dream, discover." Pretty good philosophy to remember and practice.

Ever since he was a child, he was horrified from the existence of slavery and the staggering abuse of the slaves. Early in his life, he knew he had to find a way to end it. Overcoming the division of the nation upon his election, the demise of two of his own children during his first term, and the sadness of knowing over 600,000 people died in this civil war within the country he led...Lincoln managed to cling to his inner strength to manifest what he knew was right.

All of us have a passion within us that is waiting to be pursued. It does not have to be as earth shattering as the end of slavery; however, if it drives you and is of good intention, you should pursue it. Every action of passion ignites a change. Change does not happen over night. It takes strength, belief, passion, and persistence. Passion builds energy. Energy expands. Believe it or not, negative energy does have an ending point; positive energy has no boundaries.

What does Abe Lincoln have to do with yoga? Unity. His passion was to end slavery and unite the people of the United States. To practice yoga is to unite your inner strength mentally, physically, and spiritually. Definitely a source that can lead to great changes.

Practice with passion. Learn more with the humble knowledge that you will never know it all. Share it with others, but be open to learn from others. Don't settle for anything but the best you can be. With passion comes the need to practice compassion.

Breathe in strength. Live with purpose. Unite all your sources of strength from within to make those who know you wonder what their life would have been without you in it. You do make a difference...how much is up to you.

This is not intended to inflate the ego. It is intended to get your flame to burn brighter. We all have heard to "follow the Light" when you transition from life to physical death. Why not be the Light for others to follow while still alive? Many have done it before and after Lincoln. They (including Lincoln) did not do it alone. Great changes have been achieved by uniting for betterment of the collective whole.

Fan the flames of your light with passion and conviction. Yoga gives you personal time to become more acutely aware of every nuance...physically and beyond. Do not ever think that once you reach a certain number of practices that you will know all that keeps your fire bright. Simply know that you have just scratched the surface and that is perfectly fine. The secret is to keep the inner flame burning brightly until it is time to pass the torch to the next chariot....

We are aware of the conflicts between countries. We are aware of the endless adversities that so many people face, either as a group or as individuals. And, I believe we are collectively growing weary of the increased intensity of violence and quest for control.

It is and has been time to collectively evolve to the next level. It is time to evolve our higher consciousness. Physically, we have evolved; mentally, we have evolved. Emotionally, we have evolved. Each trait has its benefits, but without the power of the fourth…they will remain imbalanced. The fourth link of evolution is to rise above the Ego.

Collectively as a human race, with the power of kindness, we are stronger than any nation or government. Anger, fear, and lack of good intention feed the proverbial fire that can burn out of control if not doused. Apathy, distortion of truth, and greed are like the strong winds that make the flames expand.

Love, kindness and peace in one’s heart are the sources of water to put out this fire around us. It is simple, but it takes US as a collective group on this planet we share to make it happen. Set the ego aside for a moment and see outside the box you live in right now.

We all may be different in race, religion, status, etc; however, just like Einstein said…we are branches of the same tree. We share this planet. We do not own it. We are here to evolve while here….as One.

How to start the evolution? Simply consciously practice the first law of life: Treat others as you would like to be treated. Simple….think of the Golden Rule as the golden thread that links you to another and beyond. The medical field is even recognizing and advocating it to patients to help with various issues. "Official" tests have been done in a variety of components of the health field to find that the practice of yoga, breathing techniques, and meditation DO make a difference and ignite positive changes in one's well-being. But, like most changes or integration of something new, it is common to have an excuse not to do it or procrastinate in getting started. Are you a yogi wanna be, but...?

To give this a little sound effect, hit this clip before you read further:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itAOGRiYRLI&feature=related

Here are the top 11 excuses I have personally heard and will exchange each excuse with an enthusiastic revelation for you to consider!

11. I cannot afford it.
Truth: Videos are inexpensive and some stations on cable have it on for free. Or, you can check out You Tube and find lots of guidance on yoga. Specials are always being run at various studios, so if you really want to try it, there is a way. If the desire is there, you will find the way.

10. I will do it when I lose weight.
Truth: Yoga helps you lose weight. In fact, unlike other exercises, the practice of yoga ignites a change in metabolism and energy levels. You're not only burning calories, but also getting muscles toned, bones stronger, and building an internal heat that burns fat. Keep practicing and your body will change shape as those muscles get closer to the bone.

9. It looks too hard.
Truth: Yoga has so many ways to be approached. A lot of what people who consider yoga, but avoid it have an image of an advanced practitioner in a pose that takes a long time to achieve. The purpose of yoga is not to get to advanced poses; but, to breathe, move, and experience what your body can do now. That's it.

8. I want a "real" work-out.
Truth: Until you have practiced yoga for an hour or so, you will wonder why you made that statement. Just do it...you'll see.

7. Yoga is for older people.
Truth: First of all, it was a shock to hear 20 year old folks make that statement. Truth: Yoga is a great practice for all ages. Younger people may approach it with more intensity, such as hot yoga or power yoga. But, like all things as we age, things change. The key is to listen to the body.

6. Yoga is for younger people.
Truth: Yoga is a life long practice. You can start it at age 80 if you want. Granted, you will not be doing what the 20 year old yogis are doing...but, that does not matter. Yoga is simply a practice. Just remember the truth in the old saying..."move it or lose it." Yoga helps you keep it.

5. Yoga is against my religion.
Truth: Yoga has nothing to do with religion. It improves and strengthens physical and mental well-being. If anything, the more you practice and get those two components of your Self in balance, you might find yourself become more spiritual. If any organized religion has an issue with someone being more spiritual, there appears to be a dichotomy in what they preach.

4. I'm not interested in doing those "weird" moves I see.
Truth: Again, what is seen on magazines and media show advanced moves. We are all built differently and what one person can do may never be achieved by another. The intention is not to get to those "weird" poses. Learn to truly breathe and just link it with your movements. Yoga literally opens up more space within your body. It can be as simple as inhaling as you raise your arms up overhead and exhaling as you bring them down. Keep it simple and what you are ready to do will manifest.

3. I can't find a teacher that I like.
Truth: Like everything, you're not going to connect to every teacher you try out. It depends on what you are looking for in a practice. Word of mouth is the best source; however, if you do not know who to ask, call a studio to speak to the owner. Explain what you need and they can give some guidance.
If I had based my decision to pursue yoga on the first three teachers I had tried out 6 years ago, I wouldn't be a teacher or writer about yoga right now. Set the intention to experience different people. When you find the one, you will know. Even better, your appreciation for the practice will be greater. Trust me.

2. I do not have enough time to practice yoga.
Truth: How we spend our time is a choice. If it is important, we find time. Ganga White, a fabulous yogi who got yoga started in California in the 60's, said: "Yoga doesn't take time...it gives time." This statement is very true. It gives you time to take care of yourself. It teaches you to be present. It teaches you how to get off "auto-pilot" mode. No one said you have to practice an hour each time. If you just do 5-15 minutes of movements linked with breath, you're practicing yoga. Do that enough and you will find time suddenly appear to do more.

And, the number one excuse for not trying yoga is.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t925JwYXhVA

1. I am not flexible.
Truth: Now how is that going to change if you don't do something to change it? It does not take long to see results manifest. Start by working on your mental flexibility by tossing that excuse out to sea!

So, let those excuses fade away and give yoga a try. Do it long enough and this could be what you do when you have the revelation that you could do it all along! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gyu82WG_edM

It produces hormones that are critical for metabolism, growth, and energy levels. Perhaps you have known someone who has a thyroid that is either under-active or over-active. One state (hypo-active) can result in difficulty in losing weight and feeling lethargic. The opposite extreme state (hyper-active) results in everything speeding up...and, not in a good way.

There are a myriad of catalysts that can cause a problem with the thyroid; therefore, always seek medical care from a physician if you have persistent symptoms. It is wise to blend the best of the East and the West in maintaining good health.

With that said, what does yoga do for the thyroid? Just like the philosophy, "move it or lose it", applies for all the other body parts...the same is for the thyroid gland. Thyroid problems most commonly manifest in women over the age of 50. Hormones are changing and it is likely that one is not as physically active. When parts are not moved or used often, they become smaller, weaker, and less efficient. The same is for this gland.

Yoga poses that are great for the thyroid involve compressing the chin toward the throat or lengthening the front of the neck. Bridge is a great pose for the thyroid. By pressing the chin as close as you can to the throat while in bridge, you give the gland a good compression to keep it strong. Cat/Cow are a great combination of poses when you bring the chin inward on Cat and lengthen the front of neck in Cow. Shoulderstand is another excellent pose for this gland and much more! The inversion brings more oxygenated blood to the brain and the glands in it and below it. The good dose of "extra oxygen" the brain and glands receive enables them to function better.

The practice of yoga, integrated with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can have a great influence on the overall function of the thyroid glands and all those other parts. Just make it a regular routine in your lifestyle and the results will emerge. It takes patience and persistence vs. the instant results one gets from the "delete" button on the computer. But, as the results become visible and felt within, know that a healthy and solid foundation has been set to build upon.

As you can tell from these poses, it does not take a lot of effort to work the gland. It just takes a conscious effort to show your thyroid some attention. You will be glad you did!

I must confess, I was never that interested in science when I was younger. As I have gotten a little older, experienced a few personal medical challenges, noticed subtle changes each year and the desire to learn has been ignited. Practicing yoga since I was 41 has made a significant impact on my physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Six years later, I am in the best shape I have ever been...ever. So, with that said, let's see what is going on with this ancient practice of yoga.

Last article gave a synopsis of the seven chief glands. To keep it simple, (good philosophy, by the way) the first gland to be addressed is the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland is right above each kidney. Their primary function is to release hormones in response to stress. These stress hormones are cortisol, epinephrine and aldosterone. Cortisol and epinephrine get the heart to beat faster, gets the digestive system to slow down and gets the body in a "fight or flight" mode. The aldosterone hormone affects the density of the plasma. This density or lack of affects your blood volume and blood pressure. Pretty critical function for a pair of glands that collectively weight 7-10 grams!

Like everything in the body, nothing is an isolated part. All parts are intertwined in their function. The adrenal glands work in conjunction with the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. Imagine...you have a constant communication of chemicals being exchanged from your head down your back and back up again! They literally affect how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally.

So, what does yoga do for your adrenal glands? In a nutshell, it gets you to relax. Poses that are especially beneficial are the ones that put some pressure on those glands. Cat/Cow not only gives your spine a good movement of the vertebrae; but, also gets you to do a little "squeezing" of the top of those kidneys. Poses that involve twists give the glands and kidneys a good "squeeze". These squeezes help facilitate the movement of sedentary stuff in the organ.

Imagine a glass of tea that you stirred some sugar in. As the swirling settles down, so does the sugar that did not get absorbed. The same principle applies here. Keep adding sugar and it builds up on the bottom. Think of the kidneys...you would not want residue of what you ate to just build up. Build up of residue causes eventual problems. Yoga stirs things up and moves it out.

http://youtu.be/4YJDDPxNThs

The link listed above is a sample of some moves to practice to help those adrenal glands and kidneys get cleaned out. It is beneficial to drink several glasses of water after a practice that works those glands. Giving the kidneys water helps them flush things out faster. Another interesting fact is that the blood pressure is affected because of the fluid that is eliminated during urination. It is, of course, impacted by numerous factors; however, it is interesting to observe that once you urinate, you can actually feel the internal pressure reduce. Makes sense...the bladder just got smaller.

Yoga practiced with a focus on breathing and taking your time has a cumulative effect on the adrenal glands. If you are a stressed out person (don't worry, you're not alone!), it is time to slow it down. When you take time to breathe and truly experience the moment, the adrenal glands stop releasing those hormones that keep you on edge. For example, when you do a forward fold and breathe, you just turned off the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and ignited the release of calming hormones. The body truly "listens" to what you want to feel. Breathe shallow, feel tense. Breathe fully, feel calmer.

We cannot control a lot of things that happen in life; but most of us can control how we breathe. Conscious slow breathing gets those adrenal glands to stop telling the other parts to be on edge. It gives the message that it is safe to just be. Reverse the overload of cortisol and adrenaline and the rest of the body and mind will adjust and enjoy. Do it long enough and do not be surprised that you have lower blood pressure, better metabolism, and deeper sleep.

Just practice with intention to breathe and be present. Do not let yourself get distracted by poses that appear daunting. Just do the poses that are right for YOU. After all, it is your practice to learn...you reside in your body, so you know it best. Give it the air, movement, and love it needs. The rest will fall in place.

Now, most exercises can and do accomplish these issues. But, do you think that is all that really needs some attention? Take your concept of fitness a little deeper. You will see the fitness of even the smallest of "parts" make an impact on the bigger "parts" of the body. These little "parts" are your glands and they play a big role in how you feel and function.

First of all, what is a gland? The definition is: "An organ or group of specialized cells in the body that produces and secretes a specific substance, such as a hormone." Translated, the glands in the body release the chemicals that get other internal parts to work at the optimal level. Unhealthy glands, such as the thyroid, have a major effect on your overall well-being. The practice of yoga actually gives it some attention that it needs to function better.

Consider your glands your body's overall energy system. There are seven glands that have significant power in how well your body functions. Consider them the coaches of the various special teams (0rgans) that play 24/7 so you can just be. The physical twists, inversions, and focused breathing that you do during a yoga practice have a very positive impact on them. Show these "coaches" some love and they can make the whole "team" play to win!

Considered the "head coach" by most is the hypothalamus. This little piece in your brain does A LOT. It controls your autonomic nervous system. This system is what controls functions below the conscious level such as heart rate, blood pressure, hunger, thirst, body temperature, alertness, digestion and sleep. It gives signals to next important coach...the pituitary gland.

The pituitary gland is another small piece (like the size of a pea) that is instrumental in releasing 9 hormones essential for well-being. In addition to other functions, it helps with water regulation in the body, growth, and the process of childbirth. If you are stressed, this gland tells the adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline. The purpose of this is called the "fight or flight" mode which helps you respond to an emergency quickly. Unfortunately, staying in a stressed mode releases too much of these hormones. We are designed to live in a state of homestasis or balance. Being overloaded with anything will have a negative impact. Yoga helps you find balance.

Moving down to the throat is your thyroid and parathyroid glands. These glands stimulate the metabolism and energy levels in the body. They help keep the cholesterol in balance, increase calcium in the bone to prevent osteoporosis. A large portion of the hormones produced help the spleen, liver, and kidneys. Good gland to show some love in your yoga practice.

The adrenal glands are located right above your kidneys. They regulate salt levels, carbohydrate metabolism and sexual functions. It releases the hormone cortisol. Like stated earlier, too much of something is not good. Too much cortisol in the body also causes weight problems, high blood pressure, insulin problems, dehydration of cells and sleep disorders...just to name a few issues.

The practice of certain yoga moves ignite the release of the "relaxing" hormones to overcome the onslaught of "stress" hormones. Calmness enables your body to work better. Just like you interact with others better when you're not stressed out, so does the body's glands and organs function better when they are not having to consume too much cortisol and adrenaline. Again, take care of the "coaches" so they can keep the team playing a good game.

Lastly, the neuroendocrine glands of the pancreas play a key part. They help control blood sugar and the function of the cells of the digestive tract. The pancreas is right near your liver and gall bladder. They all work very hard to clean out what is not good for the body. Give those glands and organs a few twists and good oxygen so they can get "cleaned". Now, don't assume you can still eat a lot of unhealthy food and clean it out with a few yoga practices! Eating right and practicing yoga is what gives the good results.

When you think of your single body as a group of collective team members, you start to understand the interconnectedness of the body's parts. If one "team member" is not feeling well, it impacts the whole "team". Everything you do, consume, and even think ultimately has an effect on the internal. Integrate the practice of yoga in your life and you will quickly notice some positive changes. Do it long enough and you will wonder how you lived without doing it.

Next article...what pose helps what gland.
