NYSC: Corps members get fresh warning

Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has warned corps members against unnecessary journeys, “especially at night”.

Ibrahim gave the warning on Tuesday in Mangu, when he paid a familiarisation visit to the Plateau State NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, NAN reports.

“Investigation has revealed that most corps members, who had lost their lives in motor accidents, traveled at night.

“I have held a meeting with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), to form a synergy to ensure that no corps member is allowed to travel once it is 6 p.m.

“We have resolved that NYSC staff would be stationed at various motor parks to ensure that the corps members comply,” he said.

The NYSC boss further cautioned corps members against boarding vehicles on the road instead of the motor parks, saying that doing that was “very dangerous”.

He also cautioned them against using the social media to spread hate speeches and religious bigotry, urging them to rather use it to promote peace and unity.

Ibrahim said that the essence of the orientation exercise was to promote national unity and integration, and also remove stereotypes.

NECO: EFCC arrests vice-principal, 2 others over exam malpractice

Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three persons, including a school vice-principal, for allegedly collecting money from students for examination malpractice.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media and Publicity of the commission on Tuesday.

The statement said that the three persons were arrested at Government Day Secondary School, Otte, Kwara, during the ongoing National Examination Council (NECO).

It disclosed that the commission received an intelligence report that the school management and supervisors of the centre were extorting money from students writing the examination in order to assist them.

The statement said the secret was revealed when an operative of the commission dressed casually on Dec. 6, pretending to be a passerby and came to the school.

It said an iPad containing answers to all the questions was recovered from the culprits, adding that the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Prof. Ademola Tayo, has spoken on the expulsion of a female student in the sex video that went viral last month.

The VC said the school had to take that decision in order to protect its image and its alumni.

“Because anywhere they go they say the students of the University are all prostitutes”, The Nation quoted him as saying.

“They said the girls are always swallowing; and all kinds of ridicule. If we keep mute, in the public opinion they would think that anything goes in the institution. We had to make a statement to show discipline.

“But I need to tell you that I signed it off with tears in my eyes as a responsible father. But we are not leaving this young lady to her doom. The pastor called me last week and I prayed with the family.

“The father called me and said pray with your daughter. I said she is still my daughter. Sometimes discipline is therapeutic. It is when you go that you realise that this is not right what I have done and then you go back to yourself.

“I look forward to a time when this young girl would graduate and be celebrated. It may not be here; I don’t know where but we are not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”

Tayo also described the act by the girl giving the boy a blow job as abnormal.

“It is not normal for a young woman to take the manhood of the man and be swallowing. That is a very dirty thing which supposed not to be heard,” he said.

The VC said some stakeholders commended the university’s decision to expel the student, saying that they would have pulled their wards out of the University.

The British named our nation “Nigeria” meaning “area of darkness” and the Fulani named our ethnic nationality “Yariba”.

Put together this means “a group of deceitful, shady, treacherous usurpers and bastards from an area of darkness”.

Is it any wonder that we are still in servitude and bondage? What a terrible combination. We have been snared by our names.

If the Lord can change the name of Jacob (meaning ‘shady character, rogue and trickster’) to Israel (meaning ‘God contends’) then He can change ours too.

If Jabez (meaning ‘one who was born in sorrow’) can call on the Lord to break the chains and remove the limitations of his name, to enlarge his coast and to bless him abundantly so can we.

Popular young rapper, Juice Wrld is dead

He died after suffering a seizure in Chicago’s Midway airport, TMZ reports.

It was learnt that Juice’s flight from California landed early Sunday morning and he suffered the seizure while walking through the airport.

It was reported that Juice was still conscious when he was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

As at the time of filing this report, the cause of his death is unclear.

But, law enforcement sources say he was bleeding from the mouth when paramedics got on scene.

Juice Wrld’s first hit was in 2018 with “Lucid Dreams.”

Juice Wrld turned 21 last week Monday.

Attack on Amaechi: N’Delta youths give IPOB 7 days to apologise or risk destruction of Igbo properties in Ikwerre land

concerned Youths of Niger Delta (CYND) have given a seven-day ultimatum to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to apologize to the Minister of Transportation, Chief Chibuike Amaechi, over the group’s recent attack on him in Madrid, Spain.

Amaechi was attacked by a group of IPOB members in Madrid, while attending a climate change conference in the country.

Similarly, this happened months after the former Senate Deputy President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, was attacked in Germany.Confirming the incident, Amaechi said: “I was attacked by a few misguided Nigerians while on national assignment at a climate change event in Madrid, Spain. They were quickly repelled by the Spanish Police before they could do any harm. I am fine, I was not hurt. Thanks for your support and prayers”.

However, the youths drawn from the core six Niger Delta states of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Cross River and Edo, described the attack as “national embarrassments,” and threatened to destroy Igbo properties especially in Ikwere dominated areas of Rivers State.

Speaking to newsmen at the end of their emergency meeting on the matter in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital at the weekend, the National Coordinator of the group, Commander Chikaru Oronda Ndamati, warned IPOB against venting their anger on Amaechi and other national leaders over their personal grievances.

His words, “The IPOB should remember that all the Igbos in South-South have and do businesses in Rivers state particularly in Ikwere land, which happens to be Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s ethnic nationality.

“We are going to destroy all the Igbo properties in Ikwere land and Niger Delta if they try it again. Ikwere ethnic nationality has four Local Government Areas in Rivers state including Port Harcourt City, Obio Akpor, Emohua and Ikwere Echie Local Governments.

“Having accepted the responsibility of the attack on Amaechi in Spain, IPOB should also be ready to take full responsibility for any reaction that will come out from their dastardly act if IPOB fails to tender apology within seven days.”

Other youths’ leaders who signed the communiqué at the end of the meeting include state coordinators Comrade Effiong Abang (Akwa Ibom); Hon. Ubong Stephens (Cross River); General Mike Gibson Saware (Bayelsa); Comrade Clement Okarevu (Delta and Comrade Nosa Momoh (Edo).

The group, therefore, urged the Federal Government “to take the matter before the international community to compel world leaders to always beef up security around Nigerian leaders on foreign trips”.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has confirmed that its members attacked Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation in Spain.

IPOB said its members attacked Amaechi in respect to an order by its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Amaechi had on Friday claimed that he was attacked by some “misguided” Nigerians in Madrid, Spain.

The Minister, who had made the disclosure via his Twitter handle, however, added that he was not hurt as the attackers were fought off by the Spanish police.

However, a statement signed by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful reads: “Yes, IPOB beat Amaechi the Transport Minister base on the standing order given by our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to reprimand those politicians who think they have arrived. IPOB Spain precisely Madrid, beat Minister of Transport Chibuike Amaechi in Spain.

“The order was there before the attack on former Deputy Senate President Dr Ike Ekweremadu in Nuremberg, Germany.

” IPOB is warming all those corrupt politicians who brought hardship to the people that we are waiting for them anywhere we meet or see them. We are telling the whole world why they must be dealt with because they are not sincere to the people to the suffering citizens.

“We ask to retrace their steps otherwise IPOB in the diaspora will continue to treat their foolishness anywhere around the world.”

Nigeria losing 68,000 women yearly to pregnancy, childbirth complications

National Coordinator, Rotary International Project on National Family Planning Campaign, Professor Dolapo Lufadeju has declared that Nigeria is losing 68,000 women yearly as a result of pregnancy and child birth complications.

Lufadeju disclosed this on Thursday during the South West family planning Campaign project in Ibadan.

He said that the number represent 23 per cent of the entire world death as a result of pregnancy and child birth complications.

“This implies that for every 5 women that died as a result of pregnancy and child birth, one is a Nigerian and this is scaring and Roatary International was upset about it.

“Rotary International being an organisation with national network of volunteers to be able to mobilise and create awareness in communities, will do community dialogue, training among others to reduce maternal and child birth mortality.

Lufadeju said that the club is partnering with the Society of Gynecologist and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) and Ministry of Health to achieve this objective.

“We will deploy the zeal, commitment and with rotary standard, we are going to innovate and propose solution to the challenges.

“We are going to do advocacy in the community, with traditional rulers, political leaders, religious leaders, train doctors among others.

“Our aim is to reduce maternal death and everyone has to know that the issue concerns us all”.

Farmer allegedly rapes 12-year-old niece in Kaduna

A Kaduna State Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered the remand of a farmer, Musa Safiyanu, 40, in a Correctional Facility Centre for allegedly raping his 12-year old niece.

NAN reports that the Magistrate, Mr Umar Ibrahim, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
Ibrahim then adjourned the case until Dec. 20 for mention.

The defendant, who resides at Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna, is facing a two-count charge of rape and incest.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that Mohammed Yusuf of Kwari Village Ikara LGA of Kaduna State, a brother to the defendant reported the case at Ikara Police Station on Nov. 15.

Leo said that the defendant lured the girl into his house and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

The prosecutor alleged that during investigation, the defendant confessed to the offences.

He said the offences contravened Sections 258 and 370 of the Kaduna State Criminal Law, 2017.

Reduce checkpoints on federal highways – Senate tells IGP

The Senate, on Thursday, urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu to reduce the number of checkpoints on federal highways in the country.

This, according to the Senate, had become necessary to reduce the gridlock on the roads.

The resolutions were reached following the consideration of a motion by Sen. Chukwuka Utazi (PDP- Enugu North) during plenary, on Thursday.

NAN reports that the upper chamber also urged Adamu to direct officers of the Nigeria Police to eschew all forms of extortion on motorists as alleged.

Utazi’s motion, coming under order 42 and 52 of the Senate Standing Rules, was entitled “National Security versus Disproportionate Road Checkpoints on Federal highways in the country”.

The Senator said that the national security architecture of Nigeria had been stretched beyond its elastic limits.

According to him, acts of criminalities had put pressure on the country’s national security architecture, necessitating and compelling security agencies to confront security breaches headlong.

The legislator stated that while road blocks were necessary to curb criminal activities, its abuse for unintended purpose was reprehensible.

All the resolutions were adopted by the senators after a voice vote by President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

Police parade 34-year-old Mount Zion Pastor who allegedly raped 15-year-old girl after deliverance

Police in Anambra State on Wednesday evening paraded the General Overseer of Mount Zion Ministries, in Obosi, Evangelist Chukwudi Chukwumezie, also known as Agudo Jesus for raping a minor.

The pastor, who was confirmed by witnesses to have been involved in previous cases of rape, involving minors, was said to have lured the victim to his church, with the prophesy that she had a bright future but was hindered by evil spirits.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, who paraded the suspect, told journalists that the police obtained a medical report, showing that the victim (name withheld) had a penetration, and the hymen lacerated.

Haruna said, “On 24th September 2019, we got a report from a woman in Obosi police station that the pastor of Mountain Zion Ministry, Obosi had an unlawful canal knowledge of her daughter.

“Police officers went to the scene, inspected it and victim was rushed to hospital and medical report revealed that her vagina was penetrated and laceration of the hymen of the victim occurred.

“Police went to the hotel and the evidence seen at the hotel corresponded with what the victim told the police.”

The victim, a 15-year old Senior Secondary One student according to her had been lured by the pastor into his car, after conducting a deliverance session on her.

“I didn’t know what happened immediately I entered his car, but I regained consciousness in a room, and I was naked, and the pastor was on top of me, and there was blood in my private part.”

Mother of the victim, Mrs Edith Idika, also confirmed that her daughter was raped. She said she had visited the pastor with her daughter, when he told her she needed to under go deliverance.

Customs intercept fuel jerry cans concealed in caskets

A Joint Special Taskforce, comprising Officers and Men of Ogun I Command, Federal Operation Unit Zone “A” and CGC’s Strike Force had intercepted 13 fuel jerry cans of 25 litres and six jerry cans of 10 litres concealed in two caskets.

This was contained in a statement signed by Ogun 1 Command Customs Spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada on Wednesday evening

Maiwada said the items were conveyed by a “daredevil” smuggler with the intention of smuggling the items across the border to a neighbouring country in a Mazda 626 with Lagos registration number: LSD 617 CW.

“To this end, the command wishes to reiterate its stand that there is no retreat on the fight against smuggling in whatever disguise.

“We, therefore, appeal to the general public to embrace legitimate means of livelihood and to avoid smuggling in all its ramifications. The eagle eye is all around Ogun State to halt new techniques initiated by economic saboteurs to perpetuate their illicit acts,” Maiwada said

Comply with Buhari govt on IPPIS – CACOL tells ASUU

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) has advised the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to heed the Federal Government’s directive and enrol in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System(IPPIS).

The Chairman of CACOL, Mr Debo Adeniran, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

NAN reports that the Federal Government and ASUU have been at loggerheads over IPPIS enrollment following a recent directive by President Muhammadu Buhari that all federal workers must be captured on the platform by December or have their salaries stopped.

ASUU president, Prof.Biodun Ogunyemi, had told lecturers to disregard the directive, saying registering on IPPIS platform would undermine university autonomy.

He had argued that IPPIS would not take care of certain peculiarities of the university system such as payment of research grants and hosting of foreign scholars by universities.

Reacting, Adeniran advised ASUU to comply with the directive as IPPIS was designed to ensure efficient payment of salaries of all federal workers and check corruption in the system.

He said that since the objective of IPPIS was to fight corruption by fishing out of ghost workers, CACOL expected ASUU to key into the system.

”The university is the citadel of excellence, the centre of innovativeness and solutions to challenges, So, we urge ASUU to embrace the innovation of IPPIS as it was designed to check corruption.

”Whatever issues ASUU is having with IPPIS can be amicably discussed with the FG and I am sure the IPPIS platform can be re-programmed in such a way to address those issues. Outright opposition is not justifiable.

”And since lecturers are experts in the various endeavours, ASUU can even come up with an idea to make the platform accommodate all the issues they are talking about.

On how the anti-corruption fight of the Buhari administration has fared, Adeniran said the campaign was yielding the desired results.

He said many corrupt people, including highly placed officials, had either been arrested or convicted, describing the fight as a huge success.

Adeniran said that Nigerians would appreciate Buhari’s anti-corruption fight more after his exit from office in 2023.

He said the fight against corruption should be a collective responsibility and urged citizens to support the fight for more successes

The Management of the Polytechnic, Ibadan on Wednesday read the riot act against any lecturer or any member of staff found in the habit of demanding sex for marks in the institution henceforth.

The management warned that any lecturer of the institution found demanding sex for marks in the institution will be sacked summarily after been made to face the standing committee to handle such offences.

It charged students who had previously fallen victim, to feel free to come forward to report any erring lecturer found to be engaged in the shameful act.

The institution said there are measures in place, standing disciplinary committees, to punish any lecturer found guilty of any offence capable of tarnishing the image of the institution.

The Deputy Rector of the institution, Mrs Abiodun Olubunmi Olubamiwa who stated this at a press conference heralding the 34th convocation of the institution held at administrative block of the institution said there is a staff disciplinary and students’ disciplinary committees to sanction anyone found guilty of sex scandal.

According to her, the achievements of the institution in recent time had outshined the challenges facing the school, and praised prompt intervention of the state government, unlike in the past.

She said; “like you have rightly said, there are challenges in every organisation but our prayer is that our right hand should be greater than our left hand that means our achievement should be greater than our challenges.

“I will like to say, in the current dispensation, most of our challenges have been addressed by the government of the day. A number of the moribund facilities have been resuscitated.

“On the issue of sex for marks, no culprit will go unpunished. In this institution, we are not used to covering any misdeeds.

“Anybody found guilty of such will be sacked. The students are free to report any of such allegations to the management and action will be taken against such person immediately,” she said.

The Deputy Rector also related that ten undergraduate students of the institution have been given scholarship award for their studies at the institution due to their outstanding performance at the Nigeria Polytechnic Games, (NIPOGA).

Olubamiwa said those who were rewarded for their outstanding performance at the recent zonal NIPOGA games, held at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo in Ondo State participated in games like tennis, baseball, scrabbles, chess, hockey and other games.

She said the management and the Rector of the institution; Professor Kazeem Adekunle Adebiyi approved the scholarship to motivate students and staff in the area of sporting activities.

According to her, the gesture was to prove that the institution does not only reward academic excellent alone but also gives full recognition to students that shine in the other field such as sports.

She said; “The management of the institution gave full support to sporting activities for both students and staff. What are some tips for having a great relationship?

No relationship is perfect all the time. But in a healthy relationship, both people feel good about the relationship most of the time. A great relationship takes more than attraction — it takes work, and both of you have to be willing to put in the effort. Here are some tips for building a healthy relationship:

Love yourself. Being comfortable with who you are means you’ll be a happier partner.
Communicate. Talk to your partner about your feelings. Ask questions and listen to their answers. If you’re upset, say so — don’t make your partner try to figure out what’s up. Talking through problems builds trust and makes your relationship stronger. And it’s not all about how to deal with your problems — don’t forget to let them know when something they do makes you happy.
Be honest. Be truthful with each other about what you do, think, and feel. Honesty creates trust. Few things harm a relationship more than lies.
Give each other some space. Couple’s time is great, but spending ALL your time together isn’t. It’s healthy to have your own friends and interests outside of the relationship.
Agree to disagree. You’re not always going to see eye to eye, and that’s OK. The important thing is to respect each other’s opinions and ideas.

Can you tell your partner what you like sexually?

Relationships can be complicated, but if you answered “yes” to all of these questions, there’s a good chance you’re in a healthy relationship. If you answered “no” to two or more questions, you might be in an unhealthy relationship.

How can I make my relationship better?

Keeping your relationship in great shape definitely takes work. Talk to your partner about things that you think could be better. Be clear about what’s bothering you, and be respectful. Good communication is a big part of solving problems. If you have trouble working through things on your own, you might consider getting help from someone outside your relationship. Sometimes talking with a counselor or therapist can help couples work through issues and improve their relationships.

Remembering, and Retaining More Books

“I just sit in my office and read all day.”

This is how Warren Buffett, one of the most successful people in the business world, describes his day. Sitting. Reading.

He advises everyone to read more, and that’s certainly a goal we can all get behind. Our personal improvements at Buffer regularly come back to the books we read—how we aim to read more and make reading a habit. I imagine you’re in the same boat as well. Reading more is one of our most common ambitions.

So how do we do it? And what are we to do with all that information once we have it?

Reading more and remembering it all is a discussion with a lot of different layers and a lot of interesting possibilities. I’m happy to lay out a few possibilities here on how to read more and remember it all, and I’d love to hear your thoughts below.

But first, let’s set some baselines …

How fast do you read?

One of the obvious shortcuts to reading more is to read faster. That’s likely the first place a lot of us would look for a quick win in our reading routine.

So how fast do you read?

Staples (yes, the office supply chain) collected speed reading data as part of an advertising campaign for selling e-readers. The campaign also included a speed reading tool that is still available to try. Go ahead and take the test to see how fast you read.

(My score was 337 words per minute. Yours?)

The Staples speed reading test includes data on how other demographics stack up in words per minute. According to Staples, the average adult reads 300 words per minute.

Third-grade students = 150 words per minute
Eight grade students = 250
Average college student = 450
Average “high level exec” = 575
Average college professor = 675
Speed readers = 1,500
World speed reading champion = 4,700

Is reading faster always the right solution to the goal of reading more? Not always. Comprehension still matters, and some reports say that speed reading or skimming leads to forgotten details and poor retention. Still, if you can bump up your words per minute marginally while still maintaining your reading comprehension, it can certainly pay dividends in your quest to read more.

There’s another way to look at the question of “reading more,” too.

How much do you read?

There’s reading fast, and then there’s reading lots. A combination of the two is going to be the best way to supercharge your reading routine, but each is valuable on its own. In fact, for many people, it’s not about the time trial of going beginning-to-end with a book or a story but rather more about the story itself. Speed reading doesn’t really help when you’re reading for pleasure.

In this sense, a desire to read more might simply mean having more time to read, and reading more content—books, magazines, articles, blog posts—in whole.

Let’s start off with a reading baseline. How many books do you read a year?

A 2012 study by the Pew Research Center found that adults read an average of 17 books each year.

The key word here is “average.” There are huge extremes at either end, both those who read way more than 17 books per year and those who read way less—like zero. The same Pew Research study found 19 percent of Americans don’t read any books. A Huffington Post/YouGov poll from 2013 showed that number might be even higher: 28 percent of Americans haven’t read a book in the past year.

Wanting to read more puts you in pretty elite company.

5 ways to read more books, blogs, and articles

1. Read for speed: Tim Ferriss’ guide to reading 300% faster

Tim Ferriss, author of the 4-Hour Workweek and a handful of other bestsellers, is one of the leading voices in lifehacks, experiments, and getting things done. So it’s no wonder that he has a speed-reading method to boost your reading speed threefold.

His plan contains two techniques:

Using a pen as a tracker and pacer, like how some people move their finger back and forth across a line as they read
Begin reading each new line at least three words in from the first word of the line and end at least three words in from the last word

The first technique, the tracker/pacer, is mostly a tool to use for mastering the second technique. Ferriss calls this second technique Perceptual Expansion. With practice, you train your peripheral vision to be more effective by picking up the words that you don’t track directly with your eye. According to Ferriss:

Untrained readers use up to ½ of their peripheral field on margins by moving from 1st word to last, spending 25-50% of their time “reading” margins with no content.

The below image from eyetracking.me shows how this concept of perceptual expansion might look in terms of reading:

You’ll find similar ideas in a lot of speed reading tips and classes (some going so far as to suggest you read line by line in a snake fashion). Rapid eye movements called saccades occur constantly as we read and as our eyes jump from margins to words. Minimizing these is a key way to boost your reading times.

The takeaway here: If you can advance your peripheral vision, you may be able to read faster—maybe not 300 percent faster, but every little bit counts.

2. Try a brand new way of reading

Is there still room for innovation in reading? A couple of new reading tools say yes.

Spritz and Blinkist take unique approaches to helping you read more—one helps you read faster and the other helps you digest books quicker.

First, Spritz. As mentioned above in the speed reading section, there is a lot of wasted movement when reading side-to-side and top-to-bottom.

Spritz cuts all the movement out entirely.

Spritz shows one word of an article or book at a time inside a box. Each word is centered in the box according to the Optimal Recognition Point—Spritz’s term for the place in a word that the eye naturally seeks—and this center letter is colored red.

Spritz has yet to launch anything related to its technology, but there is a bookmarklet called OpenSpritz, created by gun.io, that lets you use the Spritz reading method on any text you find online.

Here is what OpenSpritz looks like at 600 words per minute:

The Spritz website has a demo on the homepage that you can try for yourself and speed up or slow down the speeds as you need.

Along with Spritz is the new app Blinkist. Rather than a reimagining of the way we read, Blinkist is a reimagining of the way we consume books. Based on the belief that the wisdom of books should be more accessible to us all, Blinkist takes popular works of non-fiction and breaks the chapters down into bite-sized parts.

These so-called “blinks” contain key insights from the books, and they are meant to be read in two minutes or less. Yes, it’s a lot like Cliff Notes. Though the way the information is delivered—designed to look great and be eminently usable on mobile devices so you can learn wherever you are—makes it one-of-a-kind.

Here is an example of the Blinkist table of contents from Ben Horowitz’s The Hard Thing About Hard Things:

I’m sure we can agree that it’s a lot easier to read more when a book is distlled into 10 chapters, two minutes each.

3. Read more by making the time

Shane Parrish of the Farnam Street blog read 14 books in March, and he tackles huge totals like this month-in and month-out. How does he do it?

He makes it a priority, and he cuts out time from other activities.

What gets in the way of reading?
I don’t spend a lot of time watching TV. (The lone exception to this is during football season where I watch one game a week.)
I watch very few movies.
I don’t spend a lot of time commuting.
I don’t spend a lot of time shopping.

If you look at it in terms of raw numbers, the average person watches 35 hours of TV each week, the average commute time is one hour per day round-trip, and you can spend at least another hour per week for grocery shopping.

All in all, that’s a total of 43 hours per week, and at least some of that could be spent reading books.

4. Buy an e-reader

In the same Pew research study that showed Americans’ reading habits, Pew also noted that the average reader of e-books reads 24 books in a year, compared to a person without an e-reader who reads an average of 15.

Could you really read nine more books a year just by purchasing an e-reader?

Certainly the technology is intended to be easy-to-use, portable, and convenient. Those factors alone could make it easier to spend more time reading when you have a spare minute. Those spare minutes might not add up to nine books a year, but it’ll still be time well spent.

5. Read more by not reading at all

This is quite counterintuitive advice, and it comes from a rather counterintuitive book.

How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read, written by University of Paris literature professor Pierre Bayard, suggests that we view the act of reading on a spectrum and that we consider more categories for books besides simply “have or haven’t read.” Specifically, Bayard suggests the following:

books we’ve read
books we’ve skimmed
books we’ve heard about
books we’ve forgotten
books we’ve never opened.

He even has his own classification system for keeping track of how he’s interacted with a book in the past.

Perhaps the key to reading more books is simply to look at the act of reading from a different perspective? In Bayard’s system, he essentially is counting books he’s skimmed, heard about, or forgotten as books that he’s read. How might these new definitions alter your reading total for the year?

3 ways to remember what you read

1. Train your brain with impression, association, and repetition

A great place to start with book retention is with understanding some key ways our brain stores information. Here are three specific elements to consider:

Impression
Association
Repetition

Let’s say you read Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, one of our favorites here at Buffer. You loved the information and want to remember as much as possible. Here’s how:

Impression – Be impressed with the text. Stop and picture a scene in your mind, even adding elements like greatness, shock, or a cameo from yourself to make the impression stronger. If Dale Carnegie is explaining his distaste for criticism, picture yourself receiving the Nobel Prize for Peace and then spiking the Nobel Prize onto the dais.

(Another trick with impression is to read an important passage out loud. For some of us, our sensitivity to information can be greater with sounds rather than visuals.)

Association – Link the text to something you already know. This technique is used to great effect with memorization and the construction of memory palaces. In the case of Carnegie’s book, if there is a particular principle you wish to retain, think back to a time when you were part of a specific example involving the principle. Prior knowledge is a great way to build association.

Repetition – The more you repeat, the more you remember. This can occur by literally re-reading a certain passage or in highlighting it or writing it down then returning to it again later.

Practicing these three elements of remembering will help you get better and better. The more you work at it, the more you’ll remember.

2. Focus on the four levels of reading

Mortimer Adler’s book, How to Read a Book, identifies four levels of reading:

Elementary
Inspectional
Analytical
Syntopical

Each step builds upon the previous step. Elementary reading is what you are taught in school. Inspectional reading can take two forms: 1) a quick, leisurely read or 2) skimming the book’s preface, table of contents, index, and inside jacket.

Where the real work (and the real retention begins) is with analytical reading and syntopical reading.

With analytical reading, you read a book thoroughly. More so than that even, you read a book according to four rules, which should help you with the context and understanding of the book.

Classify the book according to subject matter.
State what the whole book is about. Be as brief as possible.
List the major parts in order and relation. Outline these parts as you have outlined the whole.
Define the problem or problems the author is trying to solve.

The final level of reading is syntopical, which requires that you read books on the same subject and challenge yourself to compare and contrast as you go.

As you advance through these levels, you will find yourself incorporating the brain techniques of impression, association, and repetition along the way. Getting into detail with a book (as in the analytical and syntopical level) will help cement impressions of the book in your mind, develop associations to other books you’ve read and ideas you’ve learned, and enforce repetition in the thoughtful, studied nature of the different reading levels.

3. Keep the book close (or at least your notes on the book)

One of the most common threads in my research into remembering more of the books you read is this: Take good notes.

Scribble in the margins as you go.

Bookmark your favorite passages.

Write a review when you’ve finished.

Use your Kindle Highlights extensively.

And when you’ve done these things, return to your notes periodically to review and refresh.

Shane Parrish of Farnam Street is a serial note taker, and he finds himself constantly returning to the books he reads.

After I finish a book, I let it age for a week or two and then pick it up again. I look at my notes and the sections I’ve marked as important. I write them down. Or let it age for another week or two.

Even Professor Pierre Bayard, the author of How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read, identifies the importance of note-taking and review:

Once forgetfulness has set in, he can use these notes to rediscover his opinion of the author and his work at the time of his original reading. We can assume that another function of the notes is to assure him that he has indeed read the works in which they were inscribed, like blazes on a trail that are intended to show the way during future periods of amnesia.

I’ve tried this method for myself, and it has completely changed the way I perceive the books I read. I look at books as investments in a future of learning rather than a fleeting moment of insight, soon to be forgotten. I store all the reviews and notes from my books on my personal blog so I can search through them when I need to remember something I’ve read.

1. Cleansing: Choose a cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin tight after washing. Clean your face no more than twice a day, or just once, if you have dry skin and don’t wear makeup. Avoid washing for that squeaky-clean feeling because that means your skin’s natural oils are gone. Cleansers known to work well for all skin types include Cetaphil and Banila Clean It Zero Sherbet Cleanser.

2. Serums: A serum with vitamin C or growth factors or peptides would be better in the morning, under sunscreen. At night, retinol or prescription retinoids work best. Makeup Artist’s Choice has an effective vitamin C and E serum and retinol available.

Dry skin may benefit from more cream-based moisturizers like MISSHA Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream. Most brands will label their products as gel or cream on their packaging.

4. Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF 15 minutes before heading outdoors, as it takes a while for sunscreen to activate. Avoid these DIY hacks

Lemon juice: It may have citric acidic, but it’s far too acidic and can cause dark spots to appear after sun exposure. It can also dry and irritate your skin.
Baking soda: At a pH level of 8, baking soda will stress your skin, significantly decrease your skin’s water content, and cause dry skin.
Garlic: In raw form, garlic can cause skin allergies, eczema, skin inflammation, and watery blisters.
Toothpaste: The ingredients in toothpaste may kill germs and absorb oil, but they can also dry out or irritate your skin.
Sugar: As an exfoliant, sugar is too harsh for the skin on your face.
Vitamin E: Topical application of vitamin E can irritate your skin and is not proven to improve scar appearance.

Some of these ingredients may be all natural and cost-effective, but they aren’t formulated for your skin. Even if you don’t feel immediate side effects, these ingredients can cause delayed or long-term damage. It’s best to use products formulated for your face. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist before trying DIY applications on your skin.

There are ways to tackle skin problems without damaging your skin. Just remember the number one rule of skin care: Don’t pick! We all want to be healthy, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle is hard work. It is not always easy to make healthy lifestyle choices. The idea of forgoing fried chicken and mashed potatoes and opting for boiled fish and vegetables, or choosing to skip happy hour with your co workers for a Zumba class at the gym can seem less than ideal. However, once you realize how good healthy feels, you will wonder why you did not put more time and effort into maintaining your health in the first place.

To help you stay as on track to being as healthy as possible, we are going to go over the 3 basic components of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which are: diet, lifestyle, and mental balance.

Step 1: Have a Healthy Diet

Our health has a lot to do with what we eat, and having a healthy diet is essential in keeping our bodies healthy.

Fill up on fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables packed full of vitamins and nutrients that are going to help keep you feel balanced and healthy. Because of this, the best way to know that you are getting the nutrition that you need is to pack these two food groups into your diet. Not only are they good for you, but they are not going to hurt you calorie-wise, either. If you are picky, make sure that you choose the ones with the most power, such as: spinach, kale, cranberries, blueberries, pineapple, and carrots. Get a little bit of every color.
Lean proteins, low-fat dairy and whole grains: In addition to fruits and vegetables, you are also going to want to hit the other food groups on the pyramid to keep your diet balanced. We all need protein for our muscles and to grow, but make sure that you reach for lean proteins and meats. Diary is essential for our bones, so go for some low-fat dairy such as non-fat milk, cheese, or yogurt. Carbohydrates can sometimes get a bad rep, but we all need some grains in our diet. Aim for brown pastas and breads, oats, and quinoa. Remember that if your grains are white, that usually means that it has been processed.
Eliminate process junk: The rule of thumb is that if something is in a package, then it is probably processed. Food and snacks that are processed contain additives that your body will not know what to do with, and end up just storing them away. Try not to buy things that are pre-packed, as they also contain large amounts of salt which you leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable either way.
Water: We are all supposed to be drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep ourselves hydrated and healthy. If you want to maintain or develop glowing skin and keep other parts of your body healthy, then make sure that you increase or sustain your water intake to at least 8 glasses a day. Water can help stimulate hair, nail, organ, and mind growth as well as helping you maintain or lose weight. Water can aid in weight loss because it will keep you full and rev up your metabolism. When you wake up in the morning, try to make drinking a glass of water the first thing that you do.
Cook: A great way to ensure that you are getting the nutrients that you need is to simply cook your own food, and cook it correctly. You can help maintain your health, budget, and waistline by stirring up some delightful recipes. When you get in the kitchen, here are a few things to keep in mind: go raw, use the healthiest type of oil that you can (olive, sunflower), try not to fry your food or soak them in batter, and do not over-salt your food (keep it under 1,500 mg per day).
Fats: With all the stigma that sounds the word “fat”, it seems like we should eliminate fat from our diet. However, our bodies need fat to keep our hair shiny, our nails healthy, and our digestive system on track. Some sources of good fats are: olive oil, avocado, and nuts.

Step 2: Have a Healthy Lifestyle

In addition to diet, our lifestyle choices impact our health and can either help us maintain it or wreck it with bad choices.

Exercise: There is not much else to bad said about exercise other than: you need it, for at least 20 to 30 minutes each day. It is essential to stay active if you want to stay healthy. It is recommended that you get around 150 minutes of physical activity each week, which includes both cardiovascular and strength-building activities. If you need to lose weight, you can do so through diet, but you are going to have to incorporate some physical activity into your lifestyle as well. You will be surprised how good and healthy you feel after just a little bit of exercise each day.
Smoking: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle does not involve smoking. Not only does it damage your health, lungs, and organs, but smoking is also expensive and harmful for those around you. If you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and live as long as possible, then you are going to want to consider quitting if you are a regular smoker.
Regular doctor visits: Even if you do not enjoy the doctor, having regular visits to the dentist and doctor are going to help you make sure that you are on track to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You will notice that as you get older, little things start happening to your body that have not before. Thus, it is important to keep up to date with shots, checkups, and screenings.
Moderate alcohol: If you enjoy a drink every now and then, make sure that you are enjoying only one of two drinks a day, depending on if you are a man (2 per day), or woman (1 a day). One serving of alcohol translates into 1 12-ounce can of beer, 4 ounces of wine, or one ounce of hard liquor.
Enjoy yourself: A healthy lifestyle also means that you should just enjoy life. Do things that make life fun, and do not let your age take out the gun in things. Do not let yourself get too serious. If you work a lot, set aside some time to enjoy yourself, laugh, and connect with people. Also make sure that you take time each day for yourself. This could be anything from: taking a walk, talking a bubble bath, treating yourself to a movie, or meditating.

Step 3: Have a Healthy Mind

A healthy mind is the final equation into living a healthy lifestyle that is equipped with exercise and a healthy diet.

Stay mentally stimulated: Even after you graduate from school, you should never stop learning. There are plenty of ways that you can continue to learn that are convenient and affordable. Find ways to distress: Busy lifestyles and daily life can lead to stress. It is important to find little ways that help you distress. To help keep your mind and body balanced and on track, try: yoga, meditation, or organization to help clear your mind.

To truly know yourself is the most important skill you can ever possess. When you know who you are, you know what you need to do, instead of looking for permission from others to do what you already know you ought to do. It allows you to bypass tons of frustration caused by putting time into the wrong things. Yes, life is supposed to be full of trial and error, but this lets you find the best areas for you to experiment with in the first place. Once you know yourself, you will become more confident, you will understand your purpose, and you will begin making a bigger impact on the world.

So how can you know who you are and what you ought to do in life? Here are the six steps you need to take in order to know your true self:

1. Be quiet.

You cannot and will not be able to know yourself until you take the time to be still. Many people don’t know themselves because any sort of silence scares them; it’s too uncomfortable to be alone with every flaw staring back at them. But it isn’t until you get alone, evaluate yourself and are completely truthful with yourself that you will actually be able to see every facet of your life—the good and the bad. 2. Realize who you truly are, not who you want to be.

I know you already have a set idea of who you desperately want to be, but it might not be who you were designed to be; this is why knowing who you really are is so important. When you know who you are, you will finally see where you and your specific gifts fit into the bigger picture.

And although there are many points along your journey to help you discover yourself, the best way to begin is to take a personality test and the StrengthsFinder test. (If it’s been five or more years since you’ve completed either of these, take them again.) No, these self-evaluations aren’t perfect, but they do pinpoint your top areas of strengths, so you can focus on the change you were meant to bring into the world.

3. Find what you are good at (and not good at).

This might be the most difficult step in the process of finding who you are, but it’s a necessary one. Sure, it takes trial and error to find what you’re good at, and no, I don’t want you to give up before you’ve had more than enough attempts, but knowing when to quit is a gift that everyone needs to learn.

Quit when you’ve put in ample time and your efforts aren’t giving back in return. What is ample time? Only you can decide that. But when you quit correctly, it isn’t giving up, it’s making room for something better. When your actions do nothing but drain you—rather than produce more passion and increase your drive to do more—that’s a good sign it is time to focus elsewhere. Your strengths will show you who you are.

4. Find what you are passionate about.

Following passion of any kind is a good thing, and you need to pay attention when it comes because it indicates an area of life that you need to pay more attention to. If we’re talking about following your passion in work, it’s a good thing. And if we’re talking about having more passion for life, it’s a good thing. Focus more on passion; understand yourself in better ways, and you’ll make a bigger impact. Passion produces effort and continuous effort produces results.

5. Ask for feedback.

If you don’t know yourself, hearing what others have to say about you is a helpful practice. Ask them two simple questions: “What strengths do you think I need to develop further?” and “What weaknesses do you think I need to work on?” Of course, their opinion isn’t going to be perfect, but their feedback will probably indicate a few areas you should at least take a second look at. This step is especially important for those who are stuck in finding themselves. Sometimes those closest to us can see something we might not be able to see in ourselves.

6. Assess your relationships.

A large aspect of knowing yourself can be found in your relationships. When you realize you’ll never truly know anyone else until you discover yourself, the importance of knowing yourself becomes even more apparent. This truth especially rings true for business leaders, because if you don’t know the people on your team, then you will be lost as a leader. But this rule also applies to any relationship in your life. Almost as much as you need to know yourself, other people also need to know who you are. People need you—the real you.

Use your reflections to fight your biggest fears, because when you understand who you are meant to be, your purpose will finally become bigger than your fears. When you realize who you are, you will spend less time spinning your wheels. Focusing on your strengths gives you the needed traction to begin making a bigger and better difference in the world. When you know yourself, you will find more peace, and you will find success quicker than ever before.

Two Keys to a Happy Marriage

Together with their family and friends, each couple is full of hopes and dreams for their future life together. But the road to a happy marriage is far from easy. And as today’s divorce statistics demonstrate all too well, many couples opt not to complete the journey.

It would be easy to blame our high rate of marital failure on things like not spending enough quality time together, allowing bitterness and resentment to build in our hearts and failing to keep communication lines open. There’s no end to books, articles and seminars that tell you how to improve these and many other aspects of your relationship. But while quality time, forgiveness and communication are vitally important to creating a happy marriage, if such things aren’t happening, it’s usually a sign of a much deeper problem. And until this problem is addressed, no amount of external behavior modification will work.

To get a hint of what this deeper issue might be, let’s take a look at the following Scripture passage:

One of them, an expert in the law, tested him [Jesus] with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied:

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it:

‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:35-40)

I believe that virtually every marital problem can be traced back to one or both partners failing to abide by these two laws. The same is true of any relationship. The minute we begin to focus on our own wants and needs over those of God or our partner; we’re destined for trouble.

Experiencing communication problems in your marriage? How often do you really focus on listening to what your partner (or God) has to say instead of insisting on more airtime? Feeling bitterness and resentment growing toward your partner? When was the last time you brought him or her before the Lord in prayer and truly thanked God for your relationship? Struggling to find quality time together? How about praying with your partner and asking God how he would like you to use your time?

As you begin to do these things, you’ll notice that your focus automatically starts to shift away from you and your desires and over to God and your partner. As a result, communication problems begin to improve, anger and resentment fade away and you naturally want to spend more time together. Of course, you can’t expect such changes to happen overnight. Your relationship is also bound to face financial pressures, child-rearing issues and other problems that are beyond your control. But if you commit your relationship to God and make a conscious decision each day to put God and your partner first, your marriage will be able to weather any storm. Not only that; you’ll also have plenty of fun together along the way!

Direct our steps from now on. Please give us the grace to put You and each other first every day. Make our relationship a blessing to others. But most of all; make it a blessing to You. Amen.”
