Top Ten Toys of the Decade

Here is my opinion on what were the top ten toys of the 1980s. I'm going to shoehorn this into my 80s connecting posts so please forgive the awkward logic jump.

Last time I talked about the amazing movie, Three Amigos. We all know Steve Martin was in that movie. And, of course, Steve Martin is a famous comedian who broke onto the scene in a sketch comedy show. Another wonderful actor who also has his roots in sketch comedy is Eric Idle of Monty Python fame.

Eric Idle voiced the crazy, fast talking robot in The Transformers - The Movie. Transformers is one of the famous toy lines to come out the 80s so this leads me to my top ten toys.

I could be lazy and list G. I. Joe, Transformers, Star Wars, etc. but I'm here to put in some effort. So, I'm going to get specific, very specific, to the point where particular action figures are going to make the list.

So, without further blah blah blah, here's my list.

10. Storm Shadow from G. I. Joe
For a kid who grew up with The Karate Kid and American Ninja this action figure was amazing. He came with two swords, a knife, a backpack with arrows (they didn't come out) and he's a ninja in a white outfit with a mask. Hasbro even came out with a cooler version a few years later with more accessories and an even cooler outfit.

9. He-Man Battle Ram
You see that neon orange thing on the top? It shot out like 3-4 feet. I was deadly accurate with it. The Battle Ram came with three plastic darts that shot out of the base unit with a spring loaded mechanism. I'd line Star Wars and He-Man figures on my window sill and spend hours shooting them down. If there were Battle Ram shooting contests back in the day, I would have won them all.

8. Hovecraft from G. I. Joe
Seriously, look at that thing. Amazing. It had so many little pieces that never stayed attached like depth charges and cannons but that was half the fun. Ironically, the hovercraft neither hovered or floated all that well in the bathtub and seemed to sink within seconds. That never stopped me from bringing it in over and over again for hours of enjoyment.

7. He-Man Slime Pit
Another Masters of the Universe toy. I think we'll be seeing a few more later as well. Ah, the Slime Pit. The first real slime toy that I remember seeing on the market. The slime was gooey. The slime smelled like chemicals that weren't meant to be inhaled. I remember the slime always being cold too. It was good fun to pour that stuff on the action figures and when it came out of the skull head it looked the skeleton had snot bubbles. The Slime Pit was not always a joy, though. I hated picking dirt and hair out of the goo.

6. Grimlock the Dinobot from Transformers
Grimlock no like being number six. Grimlock best toy of all time. Well, Mr. Grimlock, there's still a few ahead of you but you definitely were a favorite of mine. All the Dinobots were pretty damned cool. Grimlock gets the spot here cause he's a T-Rex and he was the leader. I remember big drama with my parents about me taking him to school and getting into trouble. Also, at one point, a hoodlum I hung out with in the neighborhood stole him from me but he eventually found his way back into my arms. Oh, he came with a red sword too.

5. He-Man Snake Mountain
Capitalizing on the runaway success of the Castle Grayskull play-set, Snake Mountain stood on its own as one of the best toys of the decade. It had lots of interactive features like trap doors and collapsing bridges. However, it's #5 for one reason, the echoey microphone shaped like a wolf's head. It was tons of fun to talk spooky and scare your pet dog. That microphone was the single greatest toy idea of the 80s.

4. Voltron
Look at it. Worship it. There were many Transformeresque toys that built on the idea of single vehicles that you buy separately and then combine into one super big robot. Voltron was the best of bunch. I still remember getting home from school with my honor roll report card and sitting there on the table for me was the green lion. Voltron, after your parents dropped probably a hundred dollars to get the 5 different lions, was one hell of an achievement in toy making. It's just a fantastic looking toy that has been mimicked and copied to death but in it's day, Voltron was heads above anything else on the market.

3. Megatron from Transformers
Looking at Megatron from today's safety-first toy world, it's amazing this thing came to market. But, wow, was it spectacular. The picture to the left was exactly what made it amazing. As far as Transformers go, it was a pretty horrible engineering job. It was one of the most difficult Transformers to transform and Megatron in his robot form was hideous. Yet, Megatron in gun form was amazing and made up for all other shortcomings.

2. He-Man Castle Grayskull
I put more hours of playtime into Castle Grayskull than any other single toy I ever owned. I was big into setting up my figures into battle poses. I'd have about twenty figures just draped all over this thing and when I'd run out of room, I'd hang them from the ceiling. It had and elevator, it had a trap door, a cannon, pieces that broke off, and drawbridge that never stayed on. One of my most cherished pictures is a snapshot of me on Christmas morning and my mom and I sitting on the floor playing with it.

Castle Grayskull was a fantastic toy, but, to me, there was one other toy that symbolizes my entire childhood from movies to TV to toys. That toy is...

1. Star Wars Millennium Falcon
It's the only Star Wars toy I have on the list but don't let that fool you. Star Wars was my childhood. I had mostly every toy. The Millennium Falcon was the granddaddy of them all. There had never been another toy like it and as far as play-sets go, this thing was revolutionary. My parents still tell the tale of trying to track it down on Christmas Eve and lucking out at the last second. It was the only thing I wanted and for years after, it was the main thing I played with. For a child like me who lived and breathed the Star Wars movies, to see the false floors, the holo-chess game, and the other myriad of straight-from-the-movies accessories was like the movie coming to life right there in my bedroom. This was not only one the greatest toys of the 80s but one of the greatest toys of all time.

Transformers Autobots vs Desepticon

Back to the time when the Transformers movie was still in development, the design team was asked by director Michael Bay to produce some concept arts. They made some experiments which was later commented as old-school, thus they decided to bring a massive redesign to the Transformers, making them very, very cool robots.

That’s how the brand new design of Transformers was formed, and undoubtedly the redesign is too successful that it brought in massive numbers of brand new fans (including me). That is not the end of the story, the team has actually redesigned those appeared Transformers throughout the sequel to make sure they are even more attractive, and of course, epic.

Bumblebee. Bumblebee is one of the primary protagonist appeared since the first Transformers movie. He chose Chevrolet Camaro as his vehicular form, and he communicates though selected playback of radio and television signals, due to his voice injury. (Image source: Ben Procter)

Springer. Judging from the design, Springer should be originally designed to be appeared in the movie, but was dropped with unknown reason. However, his cool design is hardly ignored, thus making him produced as a toy available for fans. (Image source: Concept Art World)

Breakaway. Although the concept art’s title says Firestorm, this Autobots is widely recognized as Breakaway. Unlike other Aerialbots who focus more on aerial acrobatics, Breakaway put more power on straightforward flying with terrible speed, making him the elite flyer in Autobots. Arcee v05. Arcee was planned to be casted in Trasformers movie but her appearance was finally replaced by Ironhide, with the rumor that the movie doesn’t have extra time to explain the gender of the Transformers. Ratchet. This is actually the unused version of Ratchet, that means you didn’t see Ratchet with this design in the first Transformer. Megatron Front View. Megatron is the leader of Decepticons, who is also the antagonist of the Transformers movie. He appears as a Cybertronian Jet in first movie then in second film, he gains an alternate flying tank mode. He was heavily redesigned during the sequel and his design has more focus on the alien aspect of Transformers, which made him looks very different with the Autobots who have more mechanical aspect on their design. Blackout. Don’t be fooled by the titles on the concept art, it’s absolutely the design of Blackout. Blackout transforms into a Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low helicopter, and he is the largest Decepticons in the first Transformers movie with 2 arm-mounted gatling cannons, 2 energy cannons and has the ability to disrupt electronic devices via EMP blasts. Starscream. Starscream is a jet-shaped Decepticons who has some hatred against Megatron and seeks to be the ultimate leader of the Decepticons. His vehicular mode is always a jet, like Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor in the movie. He’s primarily armed with a missile launcher that carries 6 missiles in both arms, and a high caliber machine gun to backup the attack. (Image source: Josh Nizzi)

Brawl. Brawl appears in the first Transformers movie as a M1 Abrams tank. He is an offensive type with high strength, which enables him to pulls Autobots Jazz off with only one hand. Devastator. Different with most Decepticons, Devastator is actually combination of Constructicons, thus he has surprisingly huge body and physical strength, and an ability to create a powerful turbine that sucks everything in sight into the mouth for destruction. (Image source: Josh Nizzi)

Trivial: Devastator has less intelligence compared to other Decepticons, due to the fact that his every move and thought has to be agreed by combining Constructicons. Scavenger. It’s hard to differentiate between Demolishor and Scavenger, but according to Transformers Wiki, this gigantic Transformers is Scavenger. Long Haul. Named Long Haul, this badass enjoys and thirsts for battle by using his projectile weaponry. According to the Transformes Wiki, there are actually 2 Long Haul in the movie, Revenge of the Fallen. The first Long Haul has combined with other Constructicons to form Devastator, while the other one fought against the NEST forces and was destroyed by United States Air Force’s air strike. Overload. This Decepticons is spotted when the Constructicons combine to form the torso of the gigantic Devastator. He’s about 30 feet tall, and seems never transforms into robot mode. (Image source: Concept Art World)

Mixmaster. As a weapon designer of Decepticons, Mixmaster is an expert in poisons, corrosive substances and explosives. Like Long Haul, there are 2 Mixmaster in the movie Revenge of the Fallen, one which forms the head of Devastator, the other fought NEST forces in Egypt and was sliced by ex-Decepticons Jetfire. Ravage. Ravage was originally planned for the first Transformers film, but the movie team later decided to use the Scorponok. Similar to Scorponok, Ravage’s look is based on the life form in Earth, and it’s armed with twin heavy machine guns that either fires standard projectiles or Cybertronian ammunition. Pretender ‘Alice’. Decepticons-transformed-human. Transformers’ decision to disguise as a machine rather than human is wise as machine can’t talk, so the chance of being discovered is probably lower. (Image source: Concept Art World)

Scalpel. Known as ‘The Doctor’ in the movie Revenge of the Fallen, Scalpel has great anatomical and mechanical knowledge, and excels in disassemble technological device and biological life forms. While I’m searching for Transformers’ fan art, I have a requirement in mind which the chosen artwork must be ‘something quality’. However, after some serious searches, I have changed the requirement to ‘something that can compare to original work’. These fan arts are just too cool and professional!

Armadillo actually did not exist in the Transformers movie, but his design possesses many characteristics from the Transformers’ design in the movie, thus causing many movie fans think that the artist should be hired to design Transformers for the film. New Screens for ‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’ Reveal Slug, Snarl and Swoop

Grimlock. Slag. Snarl. Swoop. Sludge. These are the names of the infamous Dinobots that many of us grew up loving. Having these toys made your Transformers collection the envy of any of your friends. And even though Slag has undergone a slight name change to Slug because of the offensive British slang, the fan favorites continue to make their way to Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

In the most recent set of screen shots from High Moon Studios, we get to see more of Grimlock in action as well as the reveal of three more Dinobots: Slug, Snarl and Swoop. Still missing so far is Sludge, the robotic Apatosaurus. Slug is seen below in both his robot and Triceratops dinosaur mode as is Swoop who appears in both robotic and pterodactyl modes. Snarl can also be seen below but only in his stegosaurus dinosaur mode. What impact these modes will have on gameplay is still up for discussion and debate as it hasn’t been revealed fully which of the Dinobots, aside from Grimlock, will be playable characters or if they will just be NPCs alongside the player.

Dinobots Trailer Reveals Origins in ‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’

Since their announcement in the upcoming Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Transformers purists have debated how the Dinobots would fit into the G1 canon storyline for the game. As stated in our previous post which revealed Grimlock in combat and Slug, Snarl and Swoop’s designs, the Dinobots were created on planet earth in the cartoon. Now, High Moon Studios has taken a step in ret-conning Transformers history along with Hasbro by retelling the origin story of the Dinobots in a different way.
As seen below, the game’s director Matt Tieger talks about the process of rewriting history with Hasbro’s blessing and reveals the new origin to the Dinobots for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Original a crack special ops unit, the group falls victim to the experiments of Decepticon mad scientist Shockwave. Using a connection to earth (I won’t spoil the whole video for you), Shockwave creates the new designs for the Dinobots.

SDCC10 Extra: ‘Transformers: War for Cybertron’ Developer Interview

At Comic-Con, we got the chance to sit down with Matt Tieger , one of the developers for Transformers: War for Cybertron and discuss his work on the game. Also, check out some screens and the trailer for the Transformers: War for Cybertron Map and Character Pack which was released this week for the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 which features five new multiplayer character models and four new multiplayer maps.

The Flickcast: Activision just announced that we are going to be getting five new DLC characters and a map pack with four new maps for the game so obviously this is going to be a multiplayer focused DLC pack. Can you talk to us a little bit about why you wanted to do some DLC for this game?

Matt Tieger: What we do is we try and listen. We read the forums. We talk to Transformers fans. We talk to gamers. And we listen to all the things they were really excited about within the game and wanted more of, were hungry for more of and that’s what we put in this pack.

So, five new characters right, several new of those you know were pre-order characters and people were just rabid to get them so we listened and we put those in the pack. Shockwave, Jazz and Demolisher, all available in this DLC pack.

There’s two other guys in there, never seen before: Scattershot, who’s an Autobot tank, and Onslaught, who’s a Decepticon truck. Those guys are also cool character designs, really proud of those but we also wanted to give you more customization options when you went in to make your characters and so those two character choice give you another Decepticon truck and another Autobot tank give you options of things to choose from when you make your multiplayer characters.

FC: The original game came with its set of maps. How would you describe the new maps which have been added to the game? Can you compare them to anything that’s currently there or are they all their own original concepts behind them?

MT: They’re all original concepts. They are all set within certain environment sets but they’re not cut out of single player. They’re brand new maps. There’s four of them. Two of them are all about the competitive multiplayer. They work with all the game modes that you’ve used and they are what I believe as kind of an evolution of our understanding of how to use transformation and vehicles.

They better, even than the previous ones, express vehicles. Areas where you’re confined. Areas where you have jumps. Areas where its open. It’s great to use a jet here. So that kind of stuff, we’re really evolving our understanding of vehicles and our maps . They work with all the game modes.

The other two maps that are in there, all about Escalation. You know when I listen to what fans want, through forums and stuff, people are crazy excited about Escalation mode. If any of your (readers) haven’t heard, Escalation mode is a cooperative experience. You can play online with up to three other friends where you’re desperately trying to survive after wave after wave of enemy comes attack and you get this resource called energon to spend. You gotta buy health. You gotta buy ammo. But you can also buy a better shot gun. You can buy a repair ray.

You can pool your resources to unlock doors and move to safer locations or locations where there’s better gear to get which is really fun. People are having a great time with it. These two maps, they push two aspects of that. One of them pushes a little more story. You feel like you evolve as a player. There’s this river of energon in this underground cavern, it really restricts where you can get to. As a player, you’re moving around and pulling the pumps to drain the level of stuff. Within that map, you craft the map. Like it physically changes based on what you did.

And the other one pushes a new mechanic which I think is pretty cool. Remember you’re spending those resources to get stuff? We gave you something new which is this automated turret system so it’s kind of in this fixed location, you can spend your energon and get an automated turret. Really useful to have shooting rockets for you.

FC: Especially in a game that’s based on wave after wave after wave of enemies coming at you.

MT: The turret that’s really exciting is the repair ray turret. You get yourself your repair ray turret. You go back to back. You’re desperately trying to defend these waves as an automated system is healing you. It’s a lot of fun. We gave you new characters that allowed you to do lots more customization stuff. We’re giving you two new competitive maps. Trying to feed that hunger for more and more competition and two maps all about that Escalation mode that people are having a great time with.

FC: Was there a particular reason why you focused on doing a multiplayer DLC pack as opposing to adding like Assassin’s Creed 2 or other games, a single player expansion?

MT: You know, we focused on the multiplayer stuff I think because as I said we were listening to the fans, that’s the loudest, most vocal, most rabid ones are those multiplayer gamers. Obviously everyone has a voice and we try to listen and deliver everything we can the majority are screaming for more multiplayer content so that’s where we put our focus.

FC: Since the game has come out, the reviews have been pretty positive, mostly focusing on the fact that you did hold true to the G1 storyline. What made you guys come up with the idea of doing a prequel to the Transformers television show and the movie that so many of the games now in their 20′s grew up with? What was the inspiration behind that?

MT: You know, I’m very selfish, right? There was an opportunity to make a Transformers game that was not based on the movies that was an original thing. The opportunity there to revisit my childhood because I know there’s a lot of people like me who watched those cartoons in the 80′s and just have great memories of it. Cybertron in that first episode is about thirty seconds and they never go back to it. I’ve had twenty-five, thirty years to imagine what that could be. I had to absolutely jump at the chance to take a story there.

FC: From our own perspective, one of the things we talked about on our site and our review of the game was how it felt like the game held true to the original story. Did you get any input from the original creators or did you just take that source material and try on your own to stick to it?

MT: We did our own thing. Obviously we touched base with Hasbro all the time. We’ve got some huge, huge, huge Transformers fans at the studio and what I work on is kind of your nostalgic memories of those cartoons. It’s a little different from the reality. My focus was bringing you your nostalgic memories of the cartoon.

I still love them. I watch them with my kids. But we needed to deliver your memories of those cartoons, not the reality of those cartoons. That was my role and Cinemax director’s a huge fan. He and I wrote a lot of the dialogue, almost all of the dialogue which kind of happens in the game. It was just a great process of a lot of people who just care a lot about doing a great job.

FC: And did that carry over for you guys, and this is not to spoil anything because I won’t say what happens at the end of the game, but the end credits sequence with choosing the game. Is that just sticking to the nostalgia that you loved about the franchise?

MT: That’s exactly right. Dave can take all the credit for that because he came to my office like, “Here’s what we want to do.” It looked fantastic. It’s all about, I know I said it three times, it’s listening to what fans want and giving it to them. People love what that music reminds them of what they had going on in the 80′s and from the movie and that kind of stuff. Just give it to them. Why deny them that?

So we kind of just grabbed all those elements and just found homes for them in everything that we did. There are one liners from the movie. There are one liners from the cartoon. There are visual little elements that we have influenced by comics. There’s all that stuff because it’s all about the fans, right?

FC: If given the chance to work on another Transformers—

MT: You bet. In a second I would do it.

FC: (laughs) I had actually already figured that, but where would you like to place it in the Transformers timeline?

MT: That’s a great question. There’s a lot of stuff going on on Cybertron. There’s things we had to write for back-story or whatever that I could happily spend another five games on Cybertron.

FC: So almost a prequel to your prequel game?

MT: Maybe before, during, after. I think there’s a lot of cool stuff that’s happening on that world that I’m not ready to leave it yet. Timeline-wise, I’d have to really think about where that’d fit, but I know as a location I’d happily hang out on Cybertron again.

FC: The boss Decepticon, the one you fight at the end, how much of him was inspired by the dynobots?

MT: Not as much as you might think to be honest. You know, we’ve shown him in trailers so we’re not gonna spoil anything. But Trypticon, I love dinosaurs. As a character, as a toy he’s one that I coveted but never had. You know a couple guys in the office him and you look him and he’s like a big T-Rex. It’s a base. It’s so innately awesome it had to be in the game.

FC: Alright, well thank you very much for your time. I have one last question for you before we go. Of all the Transformers that you got to work on, who is your personal favorite?

MT: Starscream. Big fan of Starscream. Visually I think he turned out nice but mostly from the story point of view I’m really with what we did with that character. I’ve always had all these burning questions about him and Megatron and why Megatron keeps him around. I felt like we got a chance to explore that territory so I’d have to push him to the top of my list because we got to do things with him that we’d never seen anywhere. Like, how did he meet Megatron? It’s brand new, never in the Transformers universe.

FC: And you guys were actually able to create canon story on how that happened.

MT: Yup, it was pretty awesome.

TRANSFORMERS ROTF: Two Voice Actors & Transformers Revealed - PLUS Plot SPOILERS

Frank Welker, the man who voiced Megatron in the original animated series, as you know was not chosen for the 2007 movie adaptation of Megatron in favor of Hugo Weaving. His co-star Peter Cullen however was, thankfully, recruited for Optimus Prime.

Michael Bay has recently revealed that he wants Frank Welker to voice a villain in the sequel Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.
Bay said that he will pursue Welker for the role of Soundwave.

Soundwave was a Decepticon who shape-shifted into a cassette player in the original cartoon. In Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen he will become a satellite.
Bay also has admitted that Megatron will be back for the sequel, for those of you that did not know already.

John Turturro, who of course played agent Simmons of Sector 7 in the first film, has been found to be voicing a Transformer as well as reprising the Simmons role in the sequel.

A user on the official Michael Bay forums read something interesting from the French movie magazine Première Ciné Live and translated it for the forum. It revealed potential plot spoiler as well as who Turturro may be voicing, Jetfire.
Jetfire better known as Skyfire in the original Transformers cartoon is a flying Autobot. Jetfire in the film is disguised as a SR-71 Blackbird.

In the original cartoon Skyfire was a Decepticon who was a close friend of Starscream. He and Starscream came to Earth On a mission to explore prehistoric Earth, Skyfire was lost in a storm. Starscream searched, but there was no sign of his comrade, and assumed he was destroyed. He returned home.
Millions of years later, after the Autobots and Decepticons had begun their war on Earth, the Decepticons found Skyfire, encased in a block of Arctic ice, ala Captain America, and revived him. Skyfire joined them due to his friendship with Starscream, though he disliked their methods. When Skyfire's compassion led him to disobey Megatron, Starscream turned on his friend. Skyfire then left the Decepticons and joined the Autobots.

The article goes on to report that Michael Bay says “There is also an old Transformer, who loses screws and bolts at every move and it’s John Turturro voicing him.”

He also goes on to say that two Autobots Skids and Mudflap, are basically the comic relief of the movie. And Bumblebee has become a bit more serious in the second film as well.

Omega Supreme is the Ark in Transformers 3 Trailer

An Italian blog tells us that the Ark on the dark side of the moon may in fact be the Transformer Omega Supreme. And the fire truck is ... Sentinel Prime! What do you think?

A reader alerted us to an interesting image. Below is a rendering of the Ark, the ship appeared in the trailer for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, TRANSFORMERS!

The hypothesis is that there may be Omega Supreme ("advanced weapon resembling the namesake of the series G1 Autobot that transforms into the spaceship land division which looks like the Ark of the G1 series" source Wikipedia).

Obviously this is not the official image (or at least not yet), what do you think?

The release of Transformers: The Dark of the Moon is scheduled for July 1, 2011 in America.

The structure seems to be that the Ark (especially the left side and chest with two cylinders). Now I do not know whether Omega or a Decepticon, most likely the center with the huge blue feet that were seen in Chicago. If the Ark is perhaps a kind of reference to the history of Animated (where Omega was the Ark). Or is the weapon you want to bring to Earth Shockwave. On Earth, perhaps the key is just to turn this "monster" (and I imagine that the hidden Dylan \ Dempsey) ... Maybe the Decepticons and the Autobots who seek it. CASE: A key to Vector Sigma.

The Transformers, the animated television series, is a great example of exchange between Japan and the U.S.: written and recorded in the U.S. and originally animated by Japan's famous Toei Animation studio. But what if the autobots landed in the Philippines? In 2007, an anonymous graphic designer took a stab at what the robot warriors would look like. Yes, this is old news! But because of the recent release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen these images have resurfaced in emails. And in comparing these to the America-inspired robots, they bring to light the connection between cars and cultural identity.
These vehicles, especially the infamous jeepney, are unique to the chaotic streets of the Philippines. Descriptions of the vehicles by Glitch's Life.

BUMBLEJEEP - Jeepneys are one of the trademarks that you are in the Philippines. With gazillions of them running down the streets and making it so traffic, one would surely recognize them.

KAGAWADZZ - A Barangay is considered to be the smallest administrative division in the Philippines. It is headed by Barangay Officials, where 7 Barangay Councils or Barangay Kagawads are included. In the picture, the red vehicle is the one used by Kagawads and other officials when roaming around the Barangay.

MEGATREN - Mega is a prefix meaning large or huge; Tren when translated into English means Train, so Megatren stands for Big Trains (i.e. MRT and LRT). Karang Gigi yang nama lainnya adalah kalkulus merupakan kotoran dalam mulut yang menempel di gigi dalam jangka waktu lama sehingga lama kelamaan akan mengeras dan membatu sehingga sulit untuk dibersihkan dengan gosok gigi. Dari segi penampilan karang gigi memang kurang sedap dipandang mata sehingga bagi yang memperhatikan penampilan sebaiknya membersihkannya dengan cara yang baik dan benar.

Setiap orang beda-beda dalam menghasilang karang gigi di dalam mulutnya. Ada yang mudah terbentuk dan ada pula yang lama terbentuknya tergantung kondisi lingkungan dalam mulut, kandungan dalam air liur (ludah), makanan yang kita makan, kondisi gigi geligi, jenis kuman yang ada di mulut kita, dan lain-lain.

Menjadi seorang transeksual seringkali menjadi cemoohan dan terpinggirkan. Tetapi, tidak bagi empat pesohor di dunia hiburan berikut ini. Mereka mampu menjadi orang sukses meskipun berstatus transeksual dan hal itu tidak menghalanginya dalam berkarya.

Empat wanita ini dulu terlahir sebagai pria. Siapa saja mereka?

1. April Ashley

Lahir pada 25 April 1935, Ashley pernah menjadi model dan pelayan restoran. Ia adalah orang Inggris pertama yang terbuka pada publik sebagai seorang transeksual, pengakuannya dipublikasikan dalam Sunday People pada 1961.

Ia juga diketahui sebagai orang Inggris pertama dan kesembilan di dunia yang melakukan operasi ganti kelamin. Ashley lahir dengan nama asli George Jamieson di Smithdown Road Hospital, Liverpool, Inggris dan memiliki lima saudara. Latar keluarganya cukup religius, ayahnya beragama Katolik Roma dan ibunya seorang Protestan.

Pada usia 14 tahun ia bergabung dengan Angkatan Laut dan ketika usianya memasuki 15 karakteristik seksualnya tidak berkembang. Ia berusaha bunuh diri setelah pulang dari Angkatan Laut dan dikirim ke pusat pengobatan mental di Ormskirk untuk pengobatan sengatan listrik.

Merasa kehidupannya di Inggris kurang memadai, Ashley pindah ke Paris pada 1950an dan mengganti namanya menjadi Drag Queen. Ia bergabung sebagai pemain dalam pertunjukkan kabaret di Carousel Theatre bersama dengan artis terkenal asal Prancis, Coccinelle.

Ashley menjalani operasi ganti kelamin di Casablanca, Maroko. Operasi tersebut dilakukan pada 12 Mei 1960 oleh dokter Georges Burou. Proses operasi sendiri memakan waktu tujuh jam dan berhasil. Ia pun kembali ke Inggris dan dengan bermodal wajah cantik Ashley menjadi model terkenal. Wajahnya terpampang di media bergengsi seperti Vogue. Ashley bahkan mendapat peran di film The Road to Hong Kong, yang dibintangi aktor ternama Bing Crosby dan Bob Hope.

Sebagai seorang transseksual ia hidup normal dan menikah dengan Arthur Corbett pada 1963 tetapi pernikahan tersebut kandas pada 1970. Lalu pada tahun 1980an, Ashley menikah dengan Jeffery West. Baru pada 2005 April Ashley mendapatkan pengakuan secara legal sebagai seorang wanita yang ditandai dengan dikeluarkannya akta kelahiran baru setelah adanya Gender Recognition Act 2004.

2. Dana International

Memiliki nama asli Sharon Cohen, tetapi secara profesional ia dikenal dengan nama Dana International. Lahir di Yaron Cohen pada 1972, Dana merupakan artis pop asal Israel yang sangat terkenal.

Cohen adalah anak bungsu dari tiga bersaudara. Meskipun secara biologis ia lahir sebagai pria, Cohen diidentifikasi sebagai wanita dari usia yang sangat muda, yaitu 13 tahun. Ia bercita-cita menjadi penyanyi sejak berusia delapan tahun setelah melihat penyanyi legendaris Israel, Ofra Haza membawakan lagu 'Chai' di Eurovision Song Contest 1983. Meskipun keluarganya miskin, ibu Cohen bekerja untuk membiayai Cohen belajar musik.

Namanya melambung setelah membawakan lagu berjudul 'Diva' serta memenangkan Eurovision Song Contest pada 1998. Ia disebut-sebut sebagai selebriti transseksual yang paling terkenal di dunia. Karirnya dimulai pada 1992, sejak saat itu ia telah menghasilkan delapan album dan tiga album tambahan. Saat ini, ia menjadi salah seorang juri acara pencarian penyanyi berbakat Israel, Kokhav Nolad.

3. Harisu

Harisu adalah nama panggung dari Lee Kyung-eun, seorang transeksual yang menjadi penyanyi, model dan aktris terkenal asal Korea Selatan. Secara biologis, Harisu yang lahir pada 17 Februari 1975, adalah seorang pria. Ia teridentifikasi sebagai seorang wanita pada saat masih kecil dan menjalani oeprasi pergantian kelamin pada 1990an.

Harisu tercatat sebagai seorang seniman Korea pertama yang seorang transseksual. Pada 2002 ia secara hukum mengganti jenis kelaminnya menjadi seorang wanita. Perhatian publik pertama kali tertuju padanya ketika Harisu tampil dalam sebuah iklan. Iklan tersebut cukup sukses dan membuat kariernya dalam dunia hiburan makin menanjak. Ia pun mengembangkan kariernya dalam bidang musik dan akting.

Sampai saat ini Harisu memiliki lima album rekaman yang terdiri dari berbagai aliran musik seperti tekno dan R&B. Lagunya juga ada yang direkam dalam bahasa mandarin. Pada 2001, Harisu mendapatkan kesempatan untuk berakting dalam film Yellow Hair 2. Sejak saat itu ia pun kebanjiran tawaran untuk membintangi sejumlah film seperti Hi!Honey dan serial drama Korea seperti Colour Blossoms.

Kehidupan percintaannya pun berjalan normal. Pada 19 Mei, 2007, Harisu menikah dengan Micky Jung. Mereka sebelumnya sudah berpacaran selama dua tahun.

4. Nong Tum

Lahir sebagai bayi laki-laki pada 9 Juni 1981, Parinya Kiatbusaba kini lebih populer dikenal sebagai Nong Tum. Ia merupakan 'kathoey' (pelaku transeksual dari pria menjadi wanita) paling terkenal di Thailand.

Uniknya, sebelum berubah menjadi wanita, Nong Tum adalah seorang petinju (Muay Thai atau tinju ala Thailand).

Sejak kecil sebenarnya, ia sebenarnya sudah menyadari ada berbeda dari dirinya. Namun, karena orangtuanya tidak mengetahui hal itu, Nong Tum didaftarkan ke sebuah kamp tinju. Dan ternyata, meskipun pembawaannya lebih feminin dibandingkan petinju lainnya, Nong Tum tergolong sebagai petinju berbakat.

Ia pun akhirnya mengikuti sejumlah pertandingan. Walau awalnya uang kemenangan ingin ia gunakan untuk operasi ganti kelamin, tetapi ternyata Nong Tum mencintai olahraga tinju.

Kehidupan publiknya dimulai pada Februari 1998, setelah memenangkan pertandingan di Bangkok Lumpini Boxing Stadium, pusat dunia Muay Thai. Media Thailand mulai menyadari ada satu atlet yang feminin, dan gemar mencium serta memeluk lawan mainnya yang lebih kekar.

Setelah itu, Nong Tum makin terkenal, karena sering muncul di majalah dan televisi.

Ia pun akhirnya menjalani operasi pergantian kelamin pada 1999, sesaat setelah berhenti menjadi petinju. Selepas itu, Nong Tum beralih profesi sebagai penyanyi.

Kisahnya cukup terkenal, dan diangkat menjadi sebuah film bertajuk 'Beautiful Boxer' pada 2003. Film ini menuai banyak pujian dan memenangkan sejumlah penghargaan. Kehidupan Nong Tum sebagai transeksual juga merupakan bagian dari buku 'Ladyboys: The Secret World of Thailand's Third Gender'.

Pada Februari 2006, Nong Tum membuat comeback sebagai petinju wanita. Ia beberapa kali memenangkan pertandingan. Hingga akhirnya pada 2010, Nong Tum membuka kamp tinju miliknya, dan menjadi pelatih tinju.

Setiap hari kita hanya menyaksikan hewan ini tanpa peduli, kecuali jika mereka mulai mengganggu . Namun apakah sobat merahitam pernah menyaksikan semut dari jarak yang cukup dekat? Sekali lagi kehebohan di Youtube,Video manusia yang terbang dengan menggunakan sayap biasa. “Manusia Burung” itulah julukan yang diberikan kepada Jarno Smeets pria yang katanya dari Belanda. Video “Manusia Burung” yang di unggah ke Youtube tersebut tampak sangat nyata dengan kepakan sayapnya sepertivideo lucu lainya. Dalam waktu sekejap saja video tersebut sudah dilihat oleh jutaan orang.

Terlihat dalam video “Manusia Burung” tersebut, Jarno dibantu beberapa temanya secara teknis memakai sayap buatan yang tampak besar. Selanjutnya dia pun mulai mengambil ancang-ancang dan berlari dengan sangat kencang sambil mengepakkan sayap tersebut. Ajaibnya, dia terlihat benar-benar bisa terbang.

Sejak video tersebut diunggah pada pertengahan Maret, banyak pengunjung YouTube kagum dan percaya Smeets benar-benar bisa terbang karena video tersebut memang tampak meyakinkan. Namun seperti yang merahitam kutip dari MSNBC bahwa dugaan mereka itu salah.

Namun Seorang pembuat film dari Belanda yaitu Floris Kaayk mengaku sebagai Jarno Smeets. Ia menyatakan video tersebut adalah hoax alias rekayasa . “Saya sesungguhnya adalah pembuat film dan animator. Tujuan proyek video ini adalah untuk membagi impian personal dan universal mengenai terbang seperti burung,” sebutnya.

Lady Gaga Sosok Kontroversial Penuh Inspirasi

Lady Gaga sukses menjadi buah bibir dalam beberapa minggu ini. Bukan hanya sebagai sosok kontroversial yang berprestasi, namun juga karena style fashionnya yang begitu nyentrik. Disetiap penampilannya, Lady Gaga selalu menyungguhkan sesuatu yang unik dan nggak biasa. Inilah yang kemudian menjadi alasan ormas tertentu untuk menjegal langkah sang “Mother Monster” untuk menggelar konser di Jakarta.

Banyak yang beranggapan bahwa Lady Gaga adalah pemuja setan, itu biasa tersirat dari lirik lagu yang dibawakannya terlebih busana yang dikenakan sarat pornografi. Dari alas an tersebut kemudian timbul ketakutan kalau konser tetap digelar akan membawa dampak negatif terutama penonton remaja. Tapi apa dengan menyaksikan konser selama dua jam mampu merusak moral remaja kita? Bukankah, semua itu kembali pada pribadi masing-masing, apakah penonton yang hadir mampu menyerap energi positif dan membuang sisi negatif dari performance Lady Gaga? Bahkan ormas tersebut juga belum memastikan betul, apakah semua orang yang membeli tiket konser mengagumi sensasi Lady Gaga atau karyanya?

Mungkin terlalu cepat untuk menyimpulkan ketakutan itu tanpa melihat lebih jauh siapa sosok Lady Gaga yang sebenarnya. Karena nggak semua lirik lagu yang dibawakanya justru berisi pesan untuk mensyukuri apa yang telah diberikan Tuhan untuk kita. Busana yang dipakai sebagai pelengkap aksi panggungnya pun nggak selalu minim dan menggoda iman. Terkadang sang pelantun lagu “Just Dance” ini memakai busana yang tertutup namun tetap ada sentuhan nyentrik yang sudah menjadi ciri khasnya selama ini.

Alangkah lebih bijaksana kalau pihak kepolisian, promoter dan para penolak konser Lady Gaga melakukan mediasi mencari titik temu agar memuaskan semua pihak. Jika dari pihak promoter sendiri telah menjanjikan bahwa Lady Gaga siap menyesuaikan diri dengan adat Indonesia, lalu apalagi yang menjadi penghalang terselenggaranya konser? Jangan sampai tercipta opini publik, bahwa pencekalan ini merupakan wujud pemasungan terhadap kebebasan berekspresi dalam bermusik atau kemudian mencuat pendapat lain kalau kasus ini hanya pengalihan isu politik.
