The Salt that is Us

In the Sermon on the Mount, Yah’shua issued a statement that has often been used by the institutional church to burden the believer with the weight of performance: "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men" (Matthew 5:13).

For centuries, religious traditions interpreted this as a threat—a warning that through insufficient effort, sin, or "backsliding," one might lose their "saltiness" and be discarded by God.

However, when viewed logically through the lens of the Finished Work of Christ and the Gospel of Grace in the New Testament, this verse transforms from a threat of rejection into a profound revelation of identity and the "good-news-only" message.

The Science of Salt

To understand the spiritual parallel, we must first look at the logical and observational reality of the element itself. Scientifically, sodium chloride (NaCl) is an incredibly stable compound. In its pure form, salt cannot "lose its saltiness." It does not have a half-life where it eventually decays into a different, non-salty substance. A molecule of salt is salty by virtue of its very existence; it is a mathematical and chemical certainty.

In the ancient world, however, salt was often gathered from marshes or pits where it was naturally mixed with gypsum, dirt, and lime. If this mixture was exposed to moisture, the actual sodium chloride—being water-soluble—would leach out and wash away. What remained was a white powder that looked like salt but was actually just flavorless grit and impurities.

This provides a logical parallel to the Gospel. The "saltiness" of the believer is not a result of their behavior; it is their identity in Christ. The only way the Gospel loses its "flavor" or "potency" is when it is mixed with foreign substances—specifically, the mixture of Law and Grace, but also with the myriad of pagan inclusion and contaminants with the pure Gospel . When the "pure salt" of Grace is leached out by the "dirt" of human effort, traditions and like things, the message becomes flavorless and is "trampled underfoot" by a world that sees no difference between the Gospel and any other moralistic philosophy.

Melach (מלח)

To go deeper into the mind of Yah’shua, we look at the Hebrew word for salt: Melach. In the ancient pictographic Hebrew script, every letter is a picture conveying a functional concept:

Mem (מ): Represents water, a massive flow, or "chaos."
Lamed (ל): Represents a shepherd’s staff, authority, or the instruction of a teacher.
Chet (ח): Represents a fence, an inner chamber, or a separation/cutting off.

When we combine these, Melach (Salt) functions as the "Authority that separates the Chaos." Just as salt prevents meat from rotting by "cutting off" the process of decay and drawing out the moisture that feeds bacteria, the believer—functioning in the Grace of the Gospel—is the authority on earth that separates humanity from the "chaos" of the curse and the decay of the Law.

Furthermore, the word Malach (to salt) shares its root with the word for "to dissolve" or "to vanish." This is the "good-news-only" paradox: The salt of the New Testament dissolves the old way of life. When you "salt" a situation with Grace, the debt and the "chaos" (Mem) are dissolved by the Authority (Lamed) of the Finished Work, leaving only the "Inner Chamber" (Chet) of intimacy with God.

The Covenant of Salt

The Bible mentions salt in contexts that reinforce the permanence of God's promises, long before the New Testament era. In the Ancient Near East, a "Covenant of Salt" was synonymous with an everlasting, incorruptible agreement.

Numbers 18:19: "It is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord with you and your descendants with you."
2 Chronicles 13:5: "Should you not know that the Lord God of Israel gave the dominion over Israel to David forever... by a covenant of salt?"
Leviticus 2:13: "And every offering of your grain offering you shall season with salt; you shall not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking."

Salt was used because of its preservative qualities—it prevented decay and rot.

By calling us the "salt of the earth," Yah’shua was identifying us with the Preservative Power of the New Testament. We are the evidence of an incorruptible covenant. Because the work of Christ was fully accomplished, the covenant we stand in cannot "rot" or fail. It is sustained by His performance, not ours.

The Gospel as an Unadulterated Message

The Gospel of Grace is a "good-news-only" message. It is the announcement that the work is finished (John 19:30). In the Old Covenant, the salt was never to be missing from the sacrifice. Today, Yah’shua is our sacrifice, and He is perfectly "salted" with the eternal Grace of God.

When we add "human effort," "religious checklists," or "Old Covenant requirements" to this finished work, we are doing exactly what the ancient merchants did: we are diluting the salt with dirt. A "gospel" that is mixed with the Law is powerless to save or preserve. It becomes a religion that men "trample underfoot" because it offers no more power than the secular philosophies of the world. Pure salt preserves; diluted salt is just dust.

In the Finished Work You ARE the Salt

Notice the grammar of Matthew 5:13. Yah’shua did not say, "Try to be salt," or "If you work hard, you might become salt." He said, "You ARE the salt." This is an ontological statement of being based on the reality of the New Testament:

Creation by Word: Just as light was created by His word, your saltiness was created by His finished work. It is a gift, not a goal.
The Sacrifice: Because Yah’shua became the ultimate sacrifice, seasoned perfectly with the salt of the eternal covenant, we who are "in Him" carry that same eternal seasoning.
The Logic of Grace: If salt cannot lose its saltiness unless it is mixed with dirt, then the most "salty" thing a believer can do is remain unmixed. The "potence" of the Gospel—the part that the world finds "flavorful" or even controversial—is the radical nature of Unconditional Love. When we tell the world that God is not counting their sins against them (2 Corinthians 5:19) because of Christ's finished work, that is the salt that preserves a soul from the decay of guilt and shame.

Preserved Forever

The Gospel of Grace is the pure, concentrated "salt" of God's logic. It is the observation of a historical fact: One Man died for all, therefore all died; and He rose so that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

We are the salt of the earth because we are carriers of the New Testament. We are walking "Covenants of Salt." We cannot lose our flavor because our flavor is Christ Himself, and He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We rest in the reality that we are not tasked with "staying salty" through effort, but with remaining "unmixed" in the purity of the Good News.

The work is done. The covenant is salted. The preservation is eternal.

Witness and Witnessing and the Reason

The beauty of the New Testament is not found in what we can do for God, but in the overwhelming revelation of what Yah’shua (Jesus) has already done for His beloved. In the religious world, a "witness" is often portrayed as someone striving to prove their own devotion through works, rules, and "doing." Yet, the ultimate Witness, the Holy Spirit constantly reminds us of the goodness, love, and truth of Christ. So, it becomes clear that a true witness is simply one who disregards himself and points toward the Truth, the Light of the World.

When we look at the opening chapter of John, we are introduced to a man sent from God whose entire existence was defined by this singular purpose.

To understand the "witness," we must look past the religious tradition and see the finished work of Yah’shua reflected in the shadows of the Old Covenant and the reality of the fully accomplished work of the New Testament.

Sent from God

"There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe." (John 1:6-7, KJV)

In the Hebrew, John is Yohanan (יוֹחָנָן). This name is a profound declaration of the New Testament reality. It is derived from two parts: Yeho (a contraction for Yahweh) and Hanan (Grace or Mercy). His very name means "Yahweh is Gracious" or "The Grace of Yahweh."

Before John ever spoke a word, his name was already testifying to the shift from the Old Covenant of Law to the New Testament of Grace. The Holy Spirit wants us to see that the "witness" begins with the grace of God, not the effort of man.

The Hebrew Pictograph of Grace (Hanan)

To dig deeper into the heart of this witness, we need to look at the ancient Hebrew pictographs for Hanan (חָנַן):

Chet (ח): A wall, a fence, or an inner room. It speaks of protection and intimacy.
Nun (נ): A sprouting seed, representing life, activity, and posterity.

Combined, Grace in the ancient Hebrew mind is the "Life within the Fence."

It is the protected, nurtured life that comes from being hidden in the Father. This is the finished work! We are no longer wandering in the wilderness of "doing"; we are the "Nun" (the life/seed) protected by the "Chet" (the wall of His finished work). John, as the witness of Grace, was the herald announcing that the time of striving was over and the time of resting in the "Life of Grace" had arrived, the Person of Grace, Yah’shua.

Not the Light, but a Pointer to the Light

"He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light." (John 1:8, KJV)

There is a great freedom in these words. Religion places the burden on the individual to "be a light" by their own moral excellence. But the New Testament reveals that there is only one Light—Yah’shua.

The word for "witness" in the Greek is marturia, but if we look at the Hebrew concept of a witness, Ed (עֵד), the pictographs tell a stunning story:

Ayin (ע): An eye; to see, to experience, or to perceive.
Dalet (ד): A door; a path or an entrance.

A witness (Ed) is one who has "seen the Door." Yah’shua said, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved" (John 10:9, KJV). A witness isn't someone who is the door; they are simply the one pointing the way to the Door. John knew he wasn't the Light. He was so consumed by the Light, the beauty of Yah’shua that he found his joy in being eclipsed by Him.

Here the Holy Spirit reminds us of our identity, He doesn't point to our flaws or our "witnessing" performance. He points us to Yah’shua, the finished work, and says, "Look at the Door! Look at the Light!" When you see how much you are loved by Yah’shua, you naturally become a witness because you cannot stop looking at the Light that has cast out all your darkness.

The Place of the Crossing

"These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing." (John 1:28, KJV)

The location of John’s witness is not a coincidence. Every detail of the Bible is about Yah’shua and His beloved. Bethabara (בֵּית עֲבָרָה) literally means "House of the Passage" or "House of the Crossing." According to tradition this is the very spot where the children of Israel crossed the Jordan River to enter the Promised Land under Joshua (a Hebrew name identical to Yah’shua and a shadow of Yah’shua).

The Old Covenant (Moses/The Law) could bring the people to the edge of the Jordan, but it could not take them across. For that, they needed to cross in the desender” (Jordan) itself.
Yah’shua (the Reality) is the one who leads us across the "passage" into the rest of the finished work.

John baptizing at the "House of the Crossing" was a prophetic sign. He was standing in the Jordan (Desender) at the exit of the Old Covenant and the entrance of the New Testament. By baptizing there, he was saying, "The era of the wilderness and the Law is ending. We are crossing over into the reality of the Promised Person—Yah’shua!"

In the New Testament, we don't live on the wilderness side of the Jordan, trying to earn our way in. We cross in the Desender and live in the "House of the Passage," knowing we have already arrived in the fullness of His grace.

The Identity of the Witness, the "I Am Not"

When the religious leaders—the priests and Levites—came to John, they were obsessed with labels and titles. "Who art thou? ... Art thou Elias? ... Art thou that prophet?" (John 1:19-21, KJV).

John’s response is the ultimate declaration of a heart at rest in Christ: "I am not" (John 1:21).

Religion demands that you be "someone." It wants you to build a reputation, a ministry, or a "holy" persona. But the true witness, led by the Holy Spirit, finds total freedom in being "nothing" so that Yah’shua can be "everything." John said:

"I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord..." (John 1:23, KJV)

He didn't even claim to be a "person" with a title; he was just a voice. The Word is Yah’shua; we are simply the voice that carries the Word. A voice has no substance without the breath (the Spirit) and the Word (the Christ). This is the beauty of the finished work: we don't have to carry the burden of being the "Messiah" of our family, our workplace, or our own life. We are simply a voice echoing the finished work of the One who has already saved us.

The Final Testimony

To bring this into full perspective, we must look at how the "witness" is concluded in the book of Revelation. All of the Bible is a cohesive story of Yah’shua’s love for His beloved. In Revelation, the concept of the witness shifts from the herald (John) to the Source (Yah’shua) and His corporate body.

1. Yah’shua is the Faithful Witness

"...and from Jesus Christ [Yah’shua], who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead..." (Revelation 1:5, KJV)

Our witness is only valid because He is the Faithful Witness. He witnessed to the Father's love by laying down His life. He witnessed to the end of sin by shouting, "It is finished!" His witness is the only one that matters in the courts of heaven.

Because He is faithful, we are secure.

2. The Two Witnesses

In Revelation 11, we see the "two witnesses." While many get lost in religious speculation about their identities, from the perspective of the finished work, they represent the complete testimony of God—the Law and the Prophets, or the Word and the Spirit—both of which point exclusively to Yah’shua. They are described as "olive trees" and "candlesticks," signifying that their power comes from the oil of the Holy Spirit and their purpose is to hold up the Light.

3. Overcoming by the Word of Testimony

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony..." (Revelation 12:11, KJV)

How do we overcome the accusations of the enemy or the weight of the world?

Not by witnessing about our own "victory" or "faithfulness," but by the word of our testimony in our lives by means of the Blood of the Lamb.

A New Testament witness doesn't say, "Look at how well I am doing."

A New Testament witness says, “I am free! Look at what the Blood has done! It has cleansed me, perfected me, bestowed me with dominion power and brought me near!"

The Finished Work is Our Only Testimony

The Holy Spirit is not a spirit of bondage leading us back into the fear of "Am I a good enough witness?" Instead, He is the Comforter constantly reminding us that we are the beloved of Yah’shua.

The Old Covenant was about "Thou shalt" and "Thou shalt not." It was a schoolmaster that ended at the Jordan. But we have crossed over in the Jordan. We are in Bethabara—the House of the Crossing. We are Yohanan—the Life protected by Grace.

Our life is no longer a performance for an audience; it is a celebration of a finished work. When we rest in the fact that Yah’shua has done it all, we become the most powerful witnesses on earth. We become a living letter, a voice of His grace, showing the world that there is a God who doesn't demand labor, but invites all into His rest.

All of the Bible is about Yah’shua. And all of Yah’shua—His birth, His witness, His death, and His resurrection—is about us, His beloved. We are the reason He came to be the "Faithful Witness."

Babylon Gone

In our third and last post in the series we conclude our journey through the Babylon confusion, we move from the historical shadows of exile into the prophetic climax found in the book of Revelation. We witness the greatest unveiling, the glory of the Lamb who has taken away the sin of the world.

We have traced the "Line of Confusion" from the Garden of Eden (the lie of lack), through the Plains of Shinar (the bricks of effort), and through the Exile (the blindness of legalism). Now, we see how the "Deadly Concoction" meets its final end. In Revelation, the "mixture" is finally exposed and estranged, the "mystery" is denounced, and the "Finished Work" is fully exhibited so that the blind are no longer blind.

The Golden Cup

In Revelation 17, we see the personification of the Babylonian system: a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, holding a golden cup.

"And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour... having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication" (Revelation 17:4, KJV).

The final moments of the "seething pot" is recounted as the "mixture" is now poured into a golden religious cup decked with the seemingly precious stones and pearls that makes it look even more desirable. It looks like the "Gate of God" (Babylon), it looks expensive, and it looks holy—but inside, it is a "Deadly Concoction." Let’s look at the descriptive words used:

Porneia (πορνεία - Fornication): In the context of the New Testament, this refers to spiritual adultery. The "Whore of Babylon" is the religious system that tells the Bride of Christ she needs something more than Yah’shua to be righteous. It is the deadly mixture of Grace mixed up with the "many lovers" of paganist traditions, rituals and like things, the laws of the old covenant together with self-righteous efforts devised by man under the suggestion of the snake.
Pharmakeia (φαρμακεία - Sorcery): This is the intoxication of religious performance. It is a "drug", the pharma that numbs the conscience. It brings you on a “high” making you believe that you performed well, instilling pride. As it wears off you “crash” and sink into a “low” showing your failure and shame bringing guilt and depression that makes you come back for more "pharma."
Mysterion (μυστήριον - Mystery): Babylon is described as the apparent "Mystery" because its deception is subtle and conniving. It is the Mixture-Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The mystery is how a system can use the Bible and the name of God to actually keep people in bondage and separated from the finished work of Yah’shua.

The Mirror that Ends Confusion

To understand how the confusion finally ends in Revelation, we must see it as a Chiasmus (a chiasma). A chiasmus is a literary structure where the first half of a story is mirrored and resolved in the second half (A-B-C-B'-A').

The book of Revelation is written as a Chiasmus, at the same time being a "mirror" to Genesis. It proves that the Holy Spirit is not reacting to history, but relating it perfectly. By looking at the book of Revelation through this lens, it shows that the "mixture" is explicitly identified and removed.

Genesis: The Beginning of Confusion	Revelation: The Resolution of Truth
A: Creation of the first Heaven and Earth	A': Creation of the New Heaven and New Earth
B: Marriage of the first Adam and Eve	B': Marriage Supper of the Lamb
C: Satan enters to deceive the nations	C': Satan cast out and destroyed forever
D: The curse enters the earth	D': "And there shall be no more curse" (Rev 22:3)
E: Death, sorrow, and pain begin	E': No more death, sorrow, or crying (Rev 21:4)
F: Man is barred from the Tree of Life	F': Man has the right to the Tree of Life (Rev 22:14)

The pivot point of this entire chiasmus is Yah’shua. He is the one who ends the center of human confusion to separate the Darkness from the Light. The "confusion" of the Old Covenant kings and the "mixture" of the seething pot are resolved because the structure of God's Word forces a final separation: you are either in the City of Man (Babylon) or the City of God (New Jerusalem). There is no middle ground.

"Come Out of Her"

From the beginning, God has called against the mixture of good and evil.

In the Garden: God warned against the Tree of Knowledge-of-good-and-evil to the preservation of the Tree of Life.
In Babel: God confounded the language to stop the impossible pursuit of man in attaining his own righteousness.
In Revelation: The cry goes out: "Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins" (Revelation 18:4, KJV).

To "come out" of Babylon is to stop drinking from the cup of mixture. It is to move from the "Iron and Clay" feet of the statue to the Stone that has become a mountain, to stand on the fully accomplished work of the Rock.

The Tower	"Let us build a gate with our own bricks."	"I am the Door; the work is finished."

Revelation	"Drink the mixture of Law and Grace."	"Drink the pure new wine of My blood."

Tetelestai vs. Gegonen

The "Line of Confusion" ends with a final declaration. In the Garden, man's "unfinished work" began. On the Cross, Yah’shua cried out:

"Tetelestai!" (Τετέλεσται) — "It is finished" (John 19:30).

In Revelation 16:17, when the final judgment falls on the Babylonian system, a great voice comes out of the temple of heaven, saying:

"Gegonen!" (Γέγονεν) — "It is done!"

The "It is finished" of the Cross becomes the "It is done" of history. Every man-made tower, every "deadly mixture," and every "seething pot" of religious effort is pulverized by the Stone. The "Whore" (the religious system) is replaced by the virgin Bride (those resting in Grace).

The Bride is not arrayed in the "purple and scarlet" of human royalty and religious status, but in "fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints" (Revelation 19:8). And even this linen is a gift—it is granted to her, not earned by her.

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

We have come full circle. The confusion that started in a Garden ends at a Marriage Supper. In Babylon, there is "agitation" and "stirring," but at the table of the Lamb, there is only Rest.

There is no "mixture" at the Marriage Supper. You won't find the "bitter herbs" of the law or the "bricks" of your performance there. You will only find the "New Wine" of the Kingdom—the pure, unadulterated joy of being one with Yah’shua.

The Holy Spirit is speaking to us one last time in this series: The confusion is over.

You don't have to "improve" yourself to be acceptable.
You don't have to "build" a way to God.
You don't have to "mix" your obedience with His grace.

Yah’shua has done it all. He has drunk the cup of mixture so you can drink the cup of blessing. The "Gate of God" system fails, but the Door, Yah’shua, is wide open.

"And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb." (Revelation 19:9)

We are all invited. We are ready. We are enough in Him.

The Seething Pot of Mixture

As we continue our journey into the heart of Babylon, we move from the ancient tower of Nimrod to the dusty streets of Jerusalem on the eve of its fall, and finally into the gilded palaces of the Babylonian conquerors.

In our first post, we saw how the "deadly mixture" began as a whisper in the Garden—a lie that humanity was "not enough"—and grew into the "Gate of God" (Babel), where man tried to reach the heavens with his own bricks of effort. In this post we’ll see how this Babylonian confusion infiltrated the very "House" (the Beth) of God's people, leading to the Exile. We will see that the deviation of the kings and the names of the Babylonian rulers themselves were all part of a "Deadly Concoction" designed to replace the rest in Yah’shua with the striving of man.

Names that Guard the Boundary

The rulers of Babylon were not merely historical figures; their names and titles carried the spiritual weight of the Babylonian system. The prominent kings of this era embodied the "Gate of God" mindset, which seeks to protect human wisdom and religious boundaries.

Nebuchadnezzar (נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר) is the most famous of these. In its Akkadian origin (Nabu-kudurri-usur), his name means "Nabu, protect my boundary" or "Nabu, protect the crown/firstborn." Nabu was the Babylonian god of wisdom, writing, and science.

The Spiritual Confusion: When man looks to "Nabu"—to human theology, intellectual religion, and the "writing" of laws—to protect his "boundary" or his "standing" with God, he is in Babylon. The Babylonian spirit tells you that you are protected by how well you define your boundaries, how strictly you keep your traditions, and how much "wisdom" you have acquired.

In contrast, the New Testament tells us that Yah’shua is our only protection. He is the One who has "broken down the middle wall of partition" (Ephesians 2:14). We don't need a god of "wisdom and writing" to protect our boundaries; we have the Word made flesh who has brought us into the limitless expanse of His grace.

Evil-merodach (אֱוִיל מְרֹדַךְ), who succeeded Nebuchadnezzar, carries a name meaning "Man of Marduk." Marduk was the head of the Babylonian pantheon, the "Lord of the Gods." This name signifies a man completely defined by a religious system. This is the goal of Babylon: to make you a "Man of the System" rather than a "Son of the Father."

Jeremiah’s Vision of the Seething Pot

As the shadows of the Old Covenant grew long and dark, the prophet Jeremiah was given a vision that perfectly captures the spiritual state of this Babylonian infiltration.

"And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north" (Jeremiah 1:13, KJV).

The "seething pot" or boiling cauldron is the ancient symbol of the Babylonian mixture. In Hebrew, the word for "seething" is naphach (נָפַח), which means to "blow upon" or "to breathe out." It is the same root used when God breathed life into Adam, but here it is a "breath of fire" from the north (Babylon) that causes the mixture to boil over.

This cauldron represents the religious life of Israel at the time. They were stirring together a "deadly mixture." They had the Temple of God (the shadow of Yah’shua), but they had stirred into it the "iron" of worldly alliances and the "slime" of Babylonian paganism. This is the ultimate "confusion by mixture." The saddest thing is that this concoction prevails until today.

Isaiah and the Burdensome "Line upon Line"

Long before the exile, the prophet Isaiah diagnosed the heart of this Babylonian spirit. The people had turned the relationship with the Father into a "burdensome series of rituals."

"But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken" (Isaiah 28:13, KJV).

Amazingly, the religious church systems today bound themselves "precept upon precept" as a recipe to attain righteousness. This is their slogan for Bible study, but the Holy Spirit reveals through Isaiah that this was actually a description of the Old Covenant bondage! It was the "stammering lips" of a people who preferred the "bricks" of legalism over the "Rest" of God.

Isaiah 28:12 says: "To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear."

The "Rest" is the Person of Yah’shua. The "mixture" is the "line upon line" using the prescripts of law and ordinances. When you add your "line" of obedience to His "line" of grace, you aren't building a stable structure; you are building a trap that causes you to "fall backward and be broken."

The Captivity Zedekiah and the Loss of Sight

The deviance of the kings of Israel reached its peak in Zedekiah (צִדְקִיָּהוּ). His name ironically means "Righteousness of Yah," yet he refused to rest in the righteousness that God provides. Instead, he made a "Deadly Concoction" of political rebellion and reliance on Egypt.

The capture of Zedekiah is one of the most sobering shadows in the Bible:

"And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon" (2 Kings 25:7, KJV).

This is exactly what the Babylonian spirit of legalism and "mixture" does to a believer:

It Slays the Fruit: The "sons" (the fruit of your life) are destroyed by the pressure of the law.
It Blinds the Vision: When you focus on your own performance (the "mixture"), your spiritual eyes are "put out." You can no longer see the finished work of Yah’shua. You become blind to the goodness of God and see only the demands of the Law.
It Binds the Walk: He was bound in "brass" (the metal of judgment). When you mix law and grace, you are bound to a sense of constant judgment, unable to walk in the freedom of the Spirit.

Daniel’s Vision of the "Mixed" Kingdom

While the kings were being blinded in Jerusalem, Daniel was in the heart of Babylon, receiving the revelation of the "Iron and Clay" feet. This is the prophetic peak of the "deadly mixture."

"And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay... they shall not cleave one to another" (Daniel 2:43, KJV).

This mixture of Iron (the rigid, demanding Authority of the Law/Religion) and Clay (the fragile, earthly works of the Seed of Men) is the blueprint of the Babylonian system. It is a kingdom that is "partly strong and partly broken."

The kings of Israel tried to build this very mixture. They took the "Clay" of their human weakness and tried to strengthen it with the "Iron" of the Law. But Isaiah had already prophesied the solution:

"Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation" (Isaiah 28:16, KJV).

This is the same Stone Daniel saw "cut without hands"! The finished work of Yah’shua on the cross was the final blow to the Babylonian system of mixing Law and Grace. The Stone does not "mix" with the iron and clay; it pulverizes them. Yah’shua is the "Sure Foundation" that replaces the "broken cisterns" of human religion.

The Promise

Amidst the smoke of the "seething pot" and the darkness of Zedekiah's blindness, Jeremiah was given the most glorious promise of the New Testament—the ultimate antidote to the Babylonian mixture.

"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant... I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people" (Jeremiah 31:31-33, KJV).

Notice the language: "I will... I will... I will." This is the language of Grace! There is no "mixture" here.

In the Old Covenant, the law was on stones (external, demanding).
In the New Testament, the life is in the heart (internal, supplying).

Babylon hates this because it removes the "Shepherd's Staff" of religious control. It declares that their sins and iniquities He will "remember no more" (Jeremiah 31:34). When God remembers our sins no more because of the blood of Yah’shua, the "confusion" of Babylon loses its power.

Coming Out of the Cauldron

The deviance of the kings and the names of the Babylonian rulers serve as a mirror for us today. Are we still "stirring the cauldron"? Are we still trying to "protect our boundaries" through religious wisdom like Nebuchadnezzar? Are we blinded by the "iron" of the law like Zedekiah?

The "Deadly Concoction" of Babylon is a mixture of:

Human Wisdom (The "Nabu" mindset).
Legalistic Bondage (The "Iron and Clay" feet).
Burdensome Ritual (The "Line upon Line" trap).

But the Holy Spirit is whispering: "It is finished." Yah’shua has emptied the cauldron. He has restored your sight. He is the Stone that has filled the whole earth with His glory. You are no longer in exile; you are in the "House of His Love." You are the “House of His Love.”

In our third and final post, we will draw all these threads together. We will look at the book of Revelation and see the final end of the "Whore of Babylon." We will see her "cup of abominations"—the final, desperate attempt of the "deadly mixture" to intoxicate the beloved of God.

Yah’shua is our King. His work is perfect. His love is pure. There is no mixture in Him!

Babylon the Gate of Confusion

In this three-part blogpost series, we’ll embark on a journey to understand the origins of Babylon. We shall look through the lens of the finished work of Yah’shua to recognize the historical context and its opposition to God’s Grace.

Babylon is not merely a geographical location or an ancient empire; it is a spiritual system—a "deadly mixture"—that stands opposed to the perfection and grace of God (Yah’shua).

To understand Babylon, we must go back past the towers of Mesopotamia, all the way to the very beginning in the Garden of Eden. It was there that the first seeds of Babylonian confusion were sown, and it was there that the "deadly mixture" was first presented to humanity.

The First Confusion

Before there was a city called Babel, there was a whisper in a Garden. The origins of Babylon are found in the subtle deception of the serpent in Genesis 3. The Holy Spirit shows us that the root of all human striving and religious effort is a fundamental misunderstanding of our identity in Yah’shua.

In the Garden, man was already made in the image and likeness of God. He lacked nothing. He walked in the cool of the day with his Creator, living in a state of rest and supply. However, the enemy brought the first "mixture"—a mixture of truth and lies designed to produce confusion. The serpent asked, "Yea, hath God said...?" (Genesis 3:1, KJV).

The core of the temptation was the false idea that man was not good enough as he was. The devil suggested that there was something Adam and Eve needed to do to improve themselves, to become "like gods." He said, "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5, KJV).

This was the birth of "religion"—the belief that through our own effort, our own choosing, and our own "eating" (works), we can attain a standing with God that He has already freely given us. The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was the first "deadly mixture." It mixed "good" with "evil," creating a system of ethics and performance that replaced the simple life of the Tree of Life. This is the essence of Babylonian confusion: the belief that we must "improve" upon what God has already declared "very good." When man ate, he traded the rest of grace for the labor of self-improvement. He moved from the "finished work" of God's creation into the "unfinished work" of human effort.

The "Gate of God"

From the Garden, this spirit of self-effort migrated to the plains of Shinar.

Historically, the name "Babylon" comes from the Akkadian word Bāb-ili, which means "Gate of God." This reflects the human heart's desire to create its own entrance into the presence of the Divine through human effort, architectural prowess, and religious structure. It is the "works of men" attempting to bridge the gap that only Yah’shua could bridge. Man wants to build a "Gate" (a system) that he can control.

However, the Bible, written word of God and His truth, refers to the city as Babel. In Hebrew, Babel (בָּבֶל) is derived from the root word balal (בָּבֶל), means "to mix, to mingle, or to dumbfound." This is the first clue to the "deadly mixture."

While man calls his religious system the "Gate of God," the Spirit of Truth identifies it as a state of "confusion by mixture." This is the same confusion that arises when people try to celebrate the "shadow" instead of embracing the "Person" of Yah'shua. When you mix the Old Covenant law with the New Testament good news of grace, you do not get "better" grace; you get Babylonian confusion. You get a toxic concoction. You get a "Gate" that leads nowhere.

The Ancient Pictograph of Babel

To see this more clearly, we can look at the ancient pictographs for the Hebrew word Babel (בָּבֶל):

Bet (ב): This pictograph represents a House, a family, or a floor plan. In the word Babel, the letter Bet appears twice (B-B, an emphasis).
Lamed (ל): This pictograph represents a Shepherd's Staff, signifying authority, a teacher, or "to lead toward."

When we look at Bet-Bet-Lamed, we see a picture of "Two Houses under one Authority." In the New Testament this is referred to as doublemindedness—see this post. This is the very definition of the deadly mixture. It is the attempt to live in the "House of Law" whilst simultaneously attempting to live in the "House of Grace", the way prescribed by any religious system.

However, we know that the Old Covenant was a schoolmaster intended to point us to Yah’shua. Yah’shua as the Grace of God was never meant to be "mixed" with anything. The Jewish Old Covenant (including the law, the prophets, the feasts, etc.) were mere shadows, rituals of a "shadow" of the Goodness of God to come in the Man, Yah’shua. To try to dwell in the shadow while claiming to live in the Light is to create a spiritual house of confusion. Yah’shua did not come to patch up the Old House. He came to establish us, once and for all, as the house of God, “the perfect tabernacle, not made with hands" (Hebrews 9:11).

The Tower of Bricks and Mortar vs. the Foundation of Grace

In Genesis 11, we see the historical and spiritual foundation of this system. The people said, "Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter" (Genesis 11:3, KJV).

Consider the difference between a brick and a stone:

Bricks are man-made. They require human labor, "thorough burning," and uniform shaping. They represent the "works of men" and the "burdensome series of rituals" found in the Old Covenant. To make a brick, you must take the earth and change it through your own heat and effort.
Stones are God-made. They are created by the hand of the Creator. Yah’shua is the Chief Cornerstone. We are "living stones" (1 Peter 2:5) built up by His grace, not our effort. A stone is perfect just as it is found.

In Babylon, they used "slime" (bitumen) for mortar. Slime is a product of the earth, a sticky, dark substance used to bind man’s efforts together. This is a picture of how religious systems use fear, obligation, and "theology" to bind people to their "deadly mixture" of law and grace. They strive to reach the heavens (the "Gate of God") through their own purity and their own "golden garments" of self-righteousness.

But we know that no man can approach God in his own glory. Just as the High Priest in the Old Covenant eventually had to put on simple white linen—recognizing he could not stand on his own merit—the builders of Babel found that their "bricks" could never reach the heights of God’s holiness. Their "Gate" was a facade.

The Rebel and the First World System

The Bible identifies Nimrod as the founder of Babel. He was a "mighty hunter before the Lord" (Genesis 10:9). In the Hebrew context, the phrase "before the Lord" often carries the connotation of "in defiance of" or "against." He was a hunter of men's souls—a rebel who sought to establish a kingdom based on human strength and collective human willpower.

Nimrod’s kingdom was the first attempt at a "world system" that excluded the need for a Savior. It was the original "Deadly Concoction":

Human Wisdom (The plan to build).
Human Works (The bricks).
Human Glory (To make a name for ourselves).

This is the antithesis of the finished work of Yah’shua. In the New Testament, we do not build a tower to reach God; God came down in the Person of Yah’shua to reach us. While the high priests of the Old Covenant had to immerse themselves multiple times and perform complex sacrifices to "cover" sin, Yah’shua entered the Holy of Holies "once for all," not to cover our sin, but to remove it forever. Nimrod represents the "mighty man" who thinks he can hunt for his own righteousness, whereas Yah'shua is the Lamb who provides righteousness as a gift.

The Deadly Mixture

The "confusion" of Babylon is most dangerous when it enters the "House" (the Bet, the tabernacle not built by the hands of man) the believer. The "deadly mixture" is the concoction of old and new, of Law and Grace. It is the same mixture the serpent deceivingly suggested in the Garden: "God said this, BUT you must do this to be like Him."

Even today many Christians feel "obliged to follow Jewish traditions" or keep the shadows of the Old Covenant, thinking it adds to their standing with God. They are mixing the "blood of bulls and goats" (the shadow) with the "blood of Christ" (the reality). Hebrews 10:4

When you mix Law (that which demands) with Grace (that which supplies), you end up with "confusion."

Law says: "Do and you shall live."
Grace says: "It is finished."
Babylon says: "Believe in Yah’shua, BUT you must also keep the Law, perform the rituals, and ensure your repentance is perfect so you don't forget a single sin."

This mixture creates a "burdensome" life. It leaves a person to "hope" they are right with God rather than "knowing" they are perfected forever. Babylon is a system of "dead works," whereas the blood of Yah’shua purges our conscience from those very works so we can live in perfect liberty before living God.

From Confusion to Finished Work

The origin of Babylon is the origin of the "I will" of man, which started in the Garden. It is the man-powered "Gate" that leads to a dead end of self-improvement and religious fatigue. In contrast, Yah’shua is the only Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is our "mercy seat."

At the cross, the veil of the Babylonian system of separation was torn from top to bottom. The "man-made way" was exposed as a failure, and the "reality" was revealed. We no longer need to strive in the "House of Confusion." We are already right with God, having been perfected forever by the one sacrifice of Yah’shua.

In our next post, we will look at how this spirit of Babylon manifested during the time of the Jewish exile, and how the prophecies of Daniel reveal the ongoing struggle between the kingdoms of men and the Kingdom of the Grace—the finished work of Yah’shua.

What remains for us today is not to "do," not to "build," and not to "mix," but simply to receive and to celebrate Yah’shua! The Holy Spirit is reminding us right now: You are enough because He is enough. You are righteous because He is righteous. The confusion is over; the Work is finished.

Fearful masterpiece

The Holy Spirit reminds us daily that we are the object of Yah’shua’s deepest affection.

When we look at Psalm 139 through the lens of the Finished Work, we see that it is not a song about a distant God tracking our every move for judgment, but a love letter about a Saviour who has fully known us, fully searched us, and fully perfected us.

We are reminded that in the Finished Work of Yah’shua, we have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15, KJV).

The Fearfully and Wonderfully Made of Psalm 139:14

"I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." (Psalm 139:14, KJV)

In the religious world, this verse is often used to speak of biological creation. But for the believer, this is about the New Creation. We are "fearfully and wonderfully made" because we have been re-created in Yah’shua.

Yare (ירא) and Palah (פלה)

Fearfully (Yare - ירא): This is the same root we explored for "the fear of the Lord." It means to be made with "awesome reverence."

Ancient Hebrew Pictograph Revelation:

Yod (י): Hand/Finished Work
Resh (ר): The Head/Highest Person
Aleph (א): Strength/The Father

The Meaning: We are the "Finished Work (Yod) of the Highest (Resh) Strength (Aleph)." We were not an accident; we were a deliberate act of Yah’shua’s hand. To be "fearfully made" means we are a masterpiece that causes even the angels to stand in awe of God’s grace.

Wonderfully (Palah - פלה): This word means to be "set apart," "distinguished," or "separated."

Ancient Hebrew Pictograph Revelation:

Pe (פ): Mouth/Speak
Lamed (ל): Staff/Authority
Hey (ה): Behold/Reveal

The Meaning: We are "The Spoken (Pe) Authority (Lamed) Revealed (Hey)." By His Word, He has set us apart from the world and placed us into Himself, the revelation of His good work!

The Frequency of the Root Word Yâre’ (יָרֵא)

Let’s look at Psalm 139 and the primary Hebrew root word יָרֵא (yâre’). While religion often prefers this word to be translated as "dread" and "fear", it is much more accurately translated as holy awe. In the Hebrew text of the Old Covenant, this root word and its various forms appear approximately 435 times.

Translators use various words often clouded by their religious upbringing to contextualize own works, the original itself, is a single Hebrew root word, yâre’. When we read the Bible we see the following translations though:

Fear / Feared	~380 times	Moving from dread of Law to awe of Grace.
Fearfully	1 time (Ps 139:14)	The unique description of the New Creation.

Beholding the Hand

This word is used frequently, and for a reason! To understand why the Holy Spirit uses this word so frequently, we must look at the Ancient Hebrew pictographs for the root yâre’ (ירא):

Yod (י): Hand / Arm — The Finished Work; the Hand of Yah’shua.
Resh (ר): Head of a Man — The Highest Person; the Authority; the Head.
Aleph (א): Ox Head — Strength; The Father; First.

The Revelation: In the Old Covenant, the people saw the "strength" (Aleph) and the "Authority" (Resh) and trembled because their sins were only "covered" (kaphar) by the blood of bulls. But the pictograph reveals that true Yare (Awe/Reverence) is to behold the Hand/Work (Yod) of the Highest (Resh) Strength (Aleph). To "fear the Lord" is to stand in breathless wonder that the Highest Authority used His Hand, Yah’shua, to complete the work of our redemption!

The Shadows and Reality of Psalm 139

In Psalm 139:14, when the Spirit says we are "fearfully (yâre’) and wonderfully made," He is speaking of the New Creation.

The Old Covenant Shadow: "Fear" was associated with the distance between a holy God and a sinful people. The High Priest had to create a "cloud of incense" to obscure his view of the mercy seat so he would not die. It was a day of solemnity and "afflicting the soul."

The Finished Work Reality: Yah’shua is our "perfect High Priest." He did not enter with the blood of animals but "by his own blood." Because He has "blotted out the handwriting of ordinances" and "forgiven us all trespasses," the dread of the Old Covenant is gone.

Now, the "fear" (awe) of the Lord is rooted in His goodness. We are "fearfully made" because we are a product of the "eternal redemption" He obtained for us.

The Gematria of Yâre’ (ירא) and the Majesty of Yah’shua

The numerical value of the root Yare (ירא) is 211:

Yod (10) + Resh (200) + Aleph (1) = 211.

This number 211 is the same as for the Hebrew word Adir (אדיר), which means "Glorious" or "Majestic." This confirms that biblical "fear" is not about being afraid of punishment. It is the recognition of how Glorious (Adir) Yah’shua is.

When we see how His one sacrifice "perfected forever" those who are sanctified (Hebrews 10:14, KJV), our hearts respond with yâre’—a holy, joyful awe of His majesty.

The Gematria of "Wonderful" (Pele)

While the root in Psalm 139 is Palah, it is inextricably linked to the word for "Wonderful" used to describe Yah’shua in Isaiah 9:6—Pele (פֶּלֶא).

Pe (80) + Lamed (30) + Aleph (1) = 111

The number 111 is deeply significant in the Finished Work:

The Aleph (אֶלֶף): The letter Aleph itself, when spelled out as a word (Aleph-Lamed-Pe), has a value of 111. This tells us that Yah’shua, the "Wonderful" one, is the full strength and expression of the Father.

The Triunity of Grace: 111 represents the three-in-one perfection. Because we are in Yah’shua, we are part of this "wonderful" unity. When we say, "I am wonderfully made," we are saying, "I am made of the same 'Wonderful' (111) substance as Yah’shua." We are Adir (Glorious) because He is Glorious.

Made Fearfully and Wonderfully

Under the Old Covenant, the Law was a schoolmaster. But in the New Testament, Psalm 139 becomes a celebration of our union with Yah’shua.

Omniscience (Verses 1-6): "O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me." Religion uses this to say, "God sees our sins!" But the Holy Spirit says, "Yah’shua knows us fully—every weakness and every thought—and He loved us enough to die for us anyway."

Omnipresence (Verses 7-12): "Whither shall I go from thy spirit?" There is no darkness deep enough to hide us from His Grace. The "veil is torn," and there is no longer any separation.

The Book of Life (Verse 16): "And in thy book all my members were written." Our identity is based on His book, not our performance.

Separated?

Religion uses "set apart" to create a "holier-than-thou" distance. But being "wonderfully made" (Palah) means we have been separated from the consciousness of sin and separated unto the consciousness of His love.

Old Covenant Separation: Based on our ability to keep the law (which no one could).

New Testament Separation: Based on Yah’shua’s ability to keep us (which no one can stop).

The Soul "Knoweth Right Well"

The end of Psalm 139:14 says, "and that my soul knoweth right well." Our soul "knows it right well" when it rests in the freedom of Christ and stops striving to achieve what He has already accomplished.

Yah’shua doesn't see a "sinner saved by grace" who is still struggling. He sees His "wonderful" (Palah) bride—set apart, distinguished by His blood, and perfected forever.

What is our conclusion?

"Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." (KJV)

When we ask Yah’shua to "search" us, we are inviting the Light to show us that there is nothing left but Him. He searches us and finds His own righteousness, His own Blood, and His own Spirit. The "way everlasting" is not a path of rules; the Way is a Person—Yah’shua.

The Holy Spirit’s Reminder:

Today, don't look in the mirror and see flaws. Look in the Spirit and see that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made." We are the "marvellous work" of Yah’shua, and His soul—and ours—knows it "right well." We are accepted in the Beloved, perfected forever by the one sacrifice that ended all "dead works" of religion.

No spiritual booby trap

The final two verses of the book of Revelation, before the concluding blessing, often strike fear into the hearts of believers. The popular and often erroneous interpretation of Revelation 22:18-19 makes it sound like a terrifying threat against touching the Bible itself.

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (Revelation 22:18-19 KJV)

So, why can’t you add to or take away?

For the person founded in God’s Grace, it sounds like a spiritual booby trap, a final commandment to police the pages of scripture. But the Holy Spirit daily reminds us of the goodness, love, and truth of Christ. So, let's step into the freedom of Yah'shua’s fully accomplished work and discover the true, breathtaking meaning of this passage.

The Word Is a Person, Not a Book

There is a fundamental error in the popular view of mistaking the "words of the prophecy of this book" for the physical 66-book compilation we call the Bible. The truth is, all of the Bible is about Yah'shua and all of Yah'shua is about His beloved.

The spirit of prophecy, the core message that gives meaning and life to all scripture, is Jesus, confirmed by the book of As Revelation:

“...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Revelation 19:10 KJV)

The focus of this final warning is not an injunction on librarians or theologians; it is a declaration about the completeness and finality of the Living Word, Yah’shua HaMashiach (Jesus Christ).

The Greek word has much more focus

John begins his Gospel with the powerful declaration: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1 KJV). The Greek word used here for "Word" is Logos. This word means far more than a collection of letters. It has expressive meaning:

Logos is Divine Expression: The logic of God, the thought, reason, or message of God.
Logos is the Unifying Principle: The divine blueprint that holds everything together.

When Revelation warns about adding to or taking away from "the words of the prophecy," it is warning against tampering with the Person of the Logos—Yah'shua and His fully accomplished work, God’s Logic.

The Ancient Warning is Fulfilled

The prohibition not to tamper with scripture (the written, prophesied Logic) is not new. It is a recurring theme from the Old Covenant, which always pointed to the perfection of Christ.

The Law warned Israel about tampering with God’s commands:

“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.” (Deuteronomy 4:2 KJV)

And wisdom literature reinforced this truth:

“Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.” (Proverbs 30:6 KJV)

If tampering with the shadow (the Law) brought a curse, how much greater the consequence for tampering with the fully accomplished Substance—Yah'shua, the Living Word!

The Impossibility of Addition

Firstly, you Can't Add to the Perfect Sacrifice.

The warning, “If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues,” is a stark statement about the utter perfection of Yah'shua’s sacrifice.

To "add" to the Word is to suggest that the work of Christ on the cross was somehow insufficient. It is to believe that something more is required for your salvation, justification, or righteousness. This is the very essence of living under the Old Covenant law.

The Apostle Paul warned the Galatians against the very same error: adding works of the Law to the grace of the Gospel. He declared that anyone who preaches a mixture of grace plus works is preaching "another gospel", and he placed a curse on them:

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8-9 KJV)

The Old Covenant Law: Was a "schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith" (Galatians 3:24 KJV). It was a burdensome series of rituals, sacrifices, and cleansings.
The Finished Work: Yah'shua, our perfect High Priest, offered Himself without spot to God and obtained eternal redemption for us (Hebrews 9:11-14 KJV).

To say that you must add works, rituals (like observing feasts or days, which are mere shadows), or self-effort is to deny the core truth of the New Testament. You are essentially declaring that the blood of Christ needs your sweat to be effective. This would be the ultimate rejection of grace!.

The plague mentioned is the consequence of this rejection—it is to be cast back under the curse of the law, striving in your own efforts to achieve a salvation that has already been fully accomplished and freely given.

Secondly, no one can subtract from what has been fully accomplished.

You Can't Take Away From the Complete Redemption. The second warning is equally profound: “And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life…”

To "take away" from the Word is to diminish the magnitude of Yah'shua’s work. It is to believe that He only partially saved you, that He only partially forgave you, or that He somehow failed to cover all of your sin.

This interpretation is often seen in a faith that says: "Yes, I'm saved, but I must still pay for the sins I commit after salvation," or "My forgiveness is temporary and could be revoked."

This idea ignores the glorious truth of our identity in Christ:

“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:” (Colossians 2:10 KJV)

The Greek word for "complete" here is plēroō, meaning "to make full, to complete, to furnish perfectly." You are not working toward completion; you are complete in the one who is the full expression of the Godhead (Colossians 2:9 KJV). See this post.

If you attempt to "take away" from the Word, you attempt to take away from the Logos, and therefore deny the plēroō—the complete perfection—that you possess in Him. You are diminishing the perfect forgiveness He has already secured:

“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;” (Colossians 2:13-14 KJV)

To "take away" from this message of complete redemption is to make the work of Christ ineffective in your life, leading to the consequence of being removed from the book of life—not because God is spiteful, but because you have willingly stepped out of the reality of His life (Yah'shua).

Celebration, not obligation

The final word of Revelation is not a threat against mistyping a verse; it is the ultimate affirmation that Yah'shua is everything.

He is the perfect High Priest who was without sin (Hebrews 4:15 KJV). He entered the heavenly Holy of Holies by His own blood to obtain eternal redemption. He is our very mercy seat (Romans 3:25 KJV).

The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom at His death (Matthew 27:51 KJV), signifying that the way to God's presence is now open to everyone.

What remains for a follower of Yah'shua is merely to enter in, not to do, but to receive and to celebrate. We are already right with God, having been perfected forever by this one sacrifice (Hebrews 10:14 KJV).

The Word is a Person, and that Person has finished any and all religious obligations that existed or that we may ever come up with.

Don’t Add—Don't add your works to His perfect work (Galatians 1:8-9 KJV).
Don’t Take Away—Don't take away from the completeness of His forgiveness (Colossians 2:10 KJV).

Simply rest in the glorious, final, and full accomplishment of Yah’shua HaMashiach.

The Stone, the Water, and the Sequence

The narrative of Simon Bar-Jona, whom our beloved Yah’shua called Peter, is one of the New Testament’s most vivid demonstrations of the finished work of Christ. It is a story that brilliantly captures the essence of God’s lavish grace—a grace that triumphs beyond human comprehension over human nature, that elevates the weak, and is the sole foundation for walking in the miraculous. The Holy Spirit daily reminds us of this goodness, love, and truth, transforming our understanding from performance based theology to an awakening for receiving the fullness of the New Testament provision. The whole of the Bible is about Yah’shua, and all of Yah’shua is about His beloved.

The Name of the Stone

Simon’s original name was changed

by Yah’shua to Cephas (Aramaic), translated into the Greek as Petros (Πέτρος). The word Petros means a stone, a movable rock, or a fragment of rock. This is distinctly different from the Greek word Petras (Πέτρας), which signifies a massive, foundational bedrock—an immovable, eternal substance.

When Yah’shua declared, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my ekklēsia” (Matthew 16:18, KJV), He was not saying He would build “those called from amongst” (ekklēsia—the called-out ones) upon a mere Petros (Peter the man). He was amplifying the mighty revelation Peter had just declared: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16, KJV). This revelation of Christ Himself is the solid, immovable Petras—Yah’shua alone. Peter, the Petros (a fragment), is merely a living stone built into that eternal foundation, as confirmed in 1 Peter 2:5 (KJV): “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house…”

Peter, the Petros, represents the Old Covenant Law-consciousness—a movable, unattainable element based on human effort that is prone to collapse. The foundation of our faith is not righteousness through human effort (Law) but righteousness as a gift from the immovable Christ (Grace).

The Water

The linguistic context surrounding verses where Peter’s name is used, brings a powerful, paradoxical beauty to the story of Peter walking on the water, recorded in Matthew 14:28-31 (KJV).

A natural rock—a petros—sinks. Peter, the man named ‘Stone,’ walking on the water was defying his own nature. His ability to walk was wholly derived from the spoken Word of Yah’shua. The walk was a living parable: the natural man, the Law-conscious man, is incapable of walking the path of righteousness, but the Grace of God makes the impossible achievable.

The moment Peter took his focus off the Master’s face (His gentle grace), the law-consciousness of his own failing nature and circumstances took over: “But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink…” (Matthew 14:30, KJV). The Petros sank the moment doubt—the spiritual double-mindedness that clashes with Christ’s finished work—crept in. This sinking demonstrates that by own deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified (Romans 3:20 KJV).

He cried out, “Lord, save me.” Observe Yah’shua's immediate response, which is the immediate, non-judgmental embrace of Grace: “And immediately Yah'shua stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” (Matthew 14:31, KJV).

Yah’shua’s rescue was immediate and complete. The Hand of Grace is always outstretched, a tangible assurance of the New Testament promise: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5, KJV). His grace is sufficient because His work is finished.

The Sequence

Further insight into Peter's place in the Grace message is found in the constant sequence in which Yah’shua’s three closest Apostles are mentioned in scripture—a sequence that is always the same and forms an insightful sentence for those familiar with the ancient languages: Peter, and James, and John.

The order of the mention of their names is a Grace map that replaces the Rock (Law) with Love (Grace).

Whenever the Master chose to take a select group for an intimate revelation, the sequence is unwavering: Peter, and James, and John.

Raising of Jairus's Daughter: Mark 5:37 (KJV): “And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.”
The Transfiguration: Matthew 17:1 (KJV): “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart…”
The Agony in Gethsemane: Matthew 26:37 (KJV): “And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.” (Referring to James and John).

This consistent grouping and ordering is not arbitrary; it intentionally unveils the divine progression into the New Testament reality.

Let us examine the names to better understand the entrenched meaning:

Peter (Petros): The Stone/Fragment. Petros represents the Old Covenant law engraved in stone and the law-consciousness that brings about, exactly what the wandering Jews asked for when they refused to ascend Mount Sinai to meet Yahveh saying to Moses Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die Exodus 20:18–19 (KJV). The burden of self-effort that is destined to sink.
James (Iakōbos): The Greek equivalent of the Hebrew Ya'akov (יַעֲקֹב), meaning “Supplanter” or “Replacer.” James represents the action, the physical and spiritual act of replacement: just as Jacob supplanted (or replaced) his older brother during birth.
John (Iōannēs): The Greek equivalent of the Hebrew Yohanan (יוֹחָנָן), meaning “Yah is a Gracious Giver” or “Grace” This is the pinnacle, the final truth: unmerited favor and love.

The order of names, when mentioned by Yah’shua, delivers the profound message of the Gospel to the Hebrew and Greek speaking people (and to us today):

The Stone (or Law) is Replaced by Grace.

(Peter → James → John)

Hebrews 8:13 says In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. - Herein He says that He made a New Covenant. The old, as a result, is made palaioō — to be obsolete (Oxford: no longer useful because something better has been presented; outdated). How? By Christ having fulfilled completely the old and presenting us with the new — imputed righteousness, Grace! Now that which is made outdated (palaioō) is also made gēraskō or obsolescent) and is ready (in position; in place) to aphanismos meaning to be in abrogation, to disappear, taken out of sight, render unapparent, perish, fall in disuse).

The sequence demonstrates that the Old Covenant Law (Peter) is utterly Replaced (James) by the ultimate reality of Yah’shua, Grace Himself and His finished work: Yah is Gracious (John). Yah’shua was consistently leading His beloved disciples—and through them, us—out of the insatiable and unattainable working of the Law and into the perfect security rest of Grace, where we simply receive because we are already His beloved. The focus is permanently shifted from the sinking Petros to the finished work of the Petras, which is Yah’shua.

Response-map, Not Rules!

In a world constantly demanding performance, rules, and self-improvement—a world often stuck in the rut of "do more to be more"—the New Testament offers a strikingly different, counter-cultural message.

The concluding section of 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 provides a beautiful and practical guide for Christian living. Yet, to truly grasp its profound depth and liberating power, we must understand these verses not as a rigid rulebook, but as powerful encouragements for those already set free and eternally secured by the finished and fully accomplished work of Jesus Christ.

The exhortations are not performance-based, law-driven demands aimed at earning or maintaining God's favour; rather,

they are the Spirit-empowered responses and natural expressions of a new life, already rooted and established in grace. The power to embrace and carry out these actions doesn't spring from human willpower, self-discipline, or a fearful striving. Instead, it flows from the indwelling Holy Spirit and the assurance provided by the faithful God who has already declared us complete and guaranteed our preservation in Christ.

The final chapter of Paul's First Letter to the Thessalonians is not a random list of spiritual chores, but a coherent, logical guide that emphasises the assurance (the certainty of Christ's return) with practical application (the daily walk of the believer). It directly connects the unshakeable reality of Christ's finished work—which secures our future—to the quality and character of our present life.

These exhortations are therefore not a new, burdensome law, but the only sensible, logical response for those who already possess complete and eternal salvation.

Children of Light, Not Slaves to Law

Before diving into the specifics of Paul’s final guidelines, it is crucial to fully grasp the bedrock upon which Paul builds this entire framework. We are emphatically declared "children of light and children of the day" (1 Thessalonians 5:5). Paul says this within the broader context of “concerning the times (the space of time we are living in) and seasons (opportune time of us living, the kairos)” in the first verse to set the focus of the believer on Christ as our living Hope.

Why is being “children of the day” our identity? Because the God of pure grace "did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ" (the day of the Lord) (1 Thessalonians 5:9). Our salvation is a present, settled, and finished fact secured entirely by Christ's sacrificial death and glorious resurrection. It is His work, not ours.

Therefore, the instructions that follow are not conditions for achieving salvation, nor are they a supplementary effort required to complete Christ's atonement. Instead, they are the natural outflow and observable evidence of a life that is already redeemed, eternally secure, and actively being sanctified by God. We live this way because of what Christ has done, not because of what we must do.

"Prophecy" is speaking forth God's Revealed Truth

Paul’s exhortation not to "despise prophecies" (1 Thessalonians 5:20), is essential for a healthy, Spirit-led communion. It is a vital check on a natural human tendency to dismiss what is obvious, settled and given. While the modern concept of prophecy often defaults to mere fortune-telling, the Greek word here, prophēteia, carries a broader and much more fundamental meaning.

Greek Origin: This word is a composite of pro, meaning "forth" (as in speaking publicly or openly), and phēmi, meaning "to speak" or "to tell."
True Meaning: Therefore, "prophesy" fundamentally means "to speak forth" or "to declare" the revealed will and counsel of God, the fully accomplished work of Christ. While it can certainly include predictive elements (foretelling), its most frequent use in the New Testament refers to a Spirit-led, inspired declaration of divine truth, encouragement and comforting of those called out from amongst. Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:9-11).

The immediate context is key: "Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). This flow demonstrates that prophecy is a valid, continuing manifestation of the Holy Spirit's ministry for those who receive, which believers must treat with respect and diligent discernment. The encouragement is to value the divinely inspired Word declared, rather than to contemptuously dismiss it.

In light of Christ's finished work, the gift of prophecy is not a tool for issuing new laws, imposing burdens, predicting or foretelling private, personal matters. It is the open declaration of what is in light of the fully accomplished work of Christ. Why? Because He is the Spirit of the prophecy. Prophecy is an instrument of grace, whereby God, through the Spirit, continues to declare His love, speak His life, His truth, His comfort, and His direction to His redeemed children, gently guiding them in their new walk of freedom. It points to the ongoing, active exhortation of the Spirit in those whom Christ has saved, the very purpose of the Spirit to testify about Yahshua.

"Exhort" is the Calling Alongside the Called

Paul uses the term "urge" or "beseech" and “exhort” multiple times to introduce his appeals, but when he uses the word “exhort” the dynamic shifts to another level. Now he is directly referring to the Holy Spirit - the parakletos (See this post). In 1 Thessalonians 5:14 he says "Now we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all". This critical word here is from the powerful Greek verb parakaleō.

Greek Origin: It is a compound of para, meaning "alongside" or "near," and kaleō, meaning "to call" or "to summon."
True Meaning: The literal sense is beautifully descriptive: "to call one alongside." This rich term expands to encompass comforting, appealing, requesting, counseling, or, in this context, urging strongly with affection and authority. It is the same root from which the Holy Spirit's title is derived, the Paraclete—the one called alongside to help, encourage, and advocate.

It is evident from this background why Paul’s instructions never feel like cold, legalistic commands. He is not legislating. He is making a heartfelt appeal as a brother-in-Christ who stands alongside us in grace, speaking the truth in love. These are loving, firm, yet gentle urgings toward actions that properly reflect our new identity in Christ and the boundless love of God we have received. The exhortation is infused with the very character of the Helper who indwells us.

Grace-Driven Fruit of a New Creation

The practical actions Paul encourages in verses 12-22 are the inevitable, spiritual fruit that grows from the root of Christ’s accomplished work:

Rejoice Always, Pray Without Ceasing, Give Thanks in Everything (vv. 16-18): Like the display on your mobile divide, this "always-on" attitude is impossible under law, but completely logical under grace. Our joy, constant prayer, and thanksgiving are not dependent on our own accomplishment in keeping the law or any fleeting earthly circumstances, but it is totally secured in the fully accomplished work of Christ—our unshakeable reality of salvation and reconciliation with God (Philippians 4:4-7). His finished work means our eternal destiny is sealed, our sins are fully remitted, and we have perpetual access to the Father. This anchored knowledge is the bedrock that fuels genuine, continuous gratitude and joyful submission, for "this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
Do Not Quench the Spirit (v. 19): Allowing the Spirit to guide us directly acknowledges the power source for living out our nature in Christ. Christ’s finished work not only secured our pardon but also inaugurated the age of His indwelling Spirit, granting us God’s very presence and power (Galatians 5:22-23). The encouragement is to receive and appropriate what the Spirit empowers us to do and participate in the divine life already at work inside, not to struggle to produce spiritual fruit from our old, fallen nature.
Admonish the Disorderly, Encourage the Fainthearted, Help the Weak, Be Patient with All (v. 14): The mark of those called out from amongst are radically transformed by grace. Because Christ loved us when we were enemies, weak, and unlovable (Romans 5:8; Ephesians 2:4-5), we are now equipped and empowered by His love to extend that same grace, forbearance, and compassion to others. This kind of interaction springs from a "love that issues from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith" (1 Timothy 1:5)—a purity and sincerity made available only through our new creation in Christ.
See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all (v. 15): When the new person comes into unity with the Spirit, living contrary to the natural impulse of the flesh (revenge), no longer becomes an option. Instead, in agreement with the abiding Spirit of Christ, the very character of God is reflected more and more until the day breaks through (2 Peter 1:19).

God’s Faithfulness and Full Accomplishment

1 Thessalonians 5 culminates in one of the most reassuring, grace-filled declarations in all of Scripture, providing the ultimate framework for understanding every encouragement that preceded it.

"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it" (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).

What a glorious and firm capstone? It is God who is faithful and true. It is He who completed His own work and sanctifies us to completion. Paul’s exhortations are not a list of criteria we must perfectly execute to force God’s hand; they are simply the areas of life where we are assured God is actively participating in and where we are encouraged to align our choices with His internal operation. Our faith-response is to simply walk in the light and cooperate with the divine life He has already imparted.

In essence, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 presents the unified behavior of those already made perfect in God’s eyes by grace—the spiritual fruit made possible by Christ's complete and final atonement. His appeal does not lay down a new set of rules to gain salvation. Rather, it is an urgent, loving persuasion to wholeheartedly accept the glorious, liberating reality of what Christ has already made us—children of the light.

The Ultimate Check-and-Balance is with Yah'shua (1 John 4:1-3)

John kicks off with a spiritual instruction that sounds intense, but is beautifully simple in the New Testament:

1 John 4:1 (KJV): Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

What does it mean to "Try" (Dokimazō) every spirit, then?

The word translated as "try" is the powerful Greek word Dokimazō (δοκιμάζω) and it doesn't mean "to find fault with" or "to condemn." Rather, it means:

To Test with a View to Approve: Think of testing a precious metal to confirm its purity and value.
To Prove Genuine: It's the act of discerning authenticity.

In the context of the New Testament, when you Dokimazō a spirit or a message, you are testing it to see if it measures up to the perfect standard of Yah'shua's finished work. You test it with the purpose of approving it only if it aligns wholefully with the truth of Christ.

The Meaning of "Spirit" (Pneuma)

The word "spirit" is Pneuma (πνεῦμα), referring not just to a ghost or an invisible entity, but to the animating breath, the core message, the foundational reasoning behind a teaching, a principle, or a person's life purpose - even the Gospel itself.

In our age of overwhelming information, Pneuma is the vibe or the source of the message you’re listening to. John is saying: Don't let just any Pneuma move you. Check the source!

Aligning the Scrutiny with the Finished Work of Christ

This is where the radical freedom of the New Testament shines so bright, utterly dismantling the complexity and condemnation of the Old Covenant.

The Old Covenant Test ➡ Complexity and Performance

Under the Old Covenant, the test of faithfulness was multifaceted and depended entirely on human effort. Did you keep the Sabbath? Did you sacrifice correctly? Did you tithe? Did you adhere to the dietary laws? The test was external, focused on your performance, and designed to lead you to one inescapable conclusion: you cannot pass it. The law was the schoolmaster leading us to Christ (Galatians 3:24, KJV).

The New Testament Test ➡ Simplicity and Sufficiency

The New Testament test, rooted in Yah'shua’s accomplished work, is a magnificent single-point check that boils down to the question: Is Yah'shua enough?

1 John 4:2 (KJV) provides the answer key:

“Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Yah'shua Christ is come in the flesh is of God.”

The only thing that matters is the confession (check out this post if you are unsure about what this word means) of Yah'shua Christ come in the flesh. Why is this the only test?

It affirms His Propitiation (Hilasmos): For Yah'shua to be the Propitiation (Hilasmos - ἱλασμός, the full and final atonement that removed any thought of God's wrath), He had to be perfect God and perfect man. If any teaching diminishes His humanity (His "flesh") or His deity ("Christ"), it denies the absolute perfection and sufficiency of His sacrifice. The finished work demands a God-Man.
It confirms Our Identity: The confession that Yah'shua is come in the flesh means the King of the universe fully identified with humanity and, through His resurrection, perfectly secured our new identity. We are now "in Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV). Any teaching that tells you to do anything to become righteous or beloved denies this finished union. It pushes you back into the performance-based prison of the Old Covenant.
It Destroys All Works-Based Religion: A teaching that says, "Yah'shua is great, but you also need to fast, follow this ritual, give up that, or earn your healing", etc. is a false spirit. It denies the Dokimazō test because it rejects the sufficiency of the work done in the flesh by Yah'shua. It's adding wood and straw to a completed monument of solid gold!

Dokimazō isn't a random doctrinal quiz. This is the whole Gospel! The ultimate proof of the Spirit of God is the confession that Yah'shua Christ is come in the flesh. Why? Because the only way for formless humanity to be eternally reconciled to a perfect God was for God Himself to become a man—to take the divine (perfect) into the human (fallen)—and complete the work of redemption on the cross.

Any message that minimizes, ignores, or replaces this one single, finished work of Yah'shua is a fake. You don't need complicated theology; you just need the perfect truth of the God-Man, who liberated you with His blood and gave you His perfect life!

The Spirit of Antichrist and the Ancient Hebrew

John explains the opposite truth in 1 John 4:3 (KJV):

“And every spirit that confesseth not that Yah'shua Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”

The "spirit of antichrist" is not just about denying Yah'shua's person; it is fundamentally about denying the sufficiency of His finished work. The spirit of antichrist is anything that replaces, revises, or requires an addition to the simple gift of salvation by grace through faith.

This is beautifully reflected in the ancient Hebrew root word for truth, Emet (אמת).

Aleph (א): The Ox Head – representing Strength/Leader.
Mem (מ): The Water – representing Chaos/Mighty Waters.
Tav (ת): The Cross/Mark – representing Covenant/Finished Mark.

Emet (Truth) means the "Strong Leader (א) who overcomes Chaos (מ) by the Finished Mark (ת) of the Covenant."

The New Testament truth is Yah'shua! He is the Strong Leader. Any spirit you Dokimazō must align with the fact that He, by His one finished sacrifice (the Mark/Tav), has overcome the chaos and formlessness of sin and death.

If a message tells you to look to your performance, your repentance, or your effort to maintain your peace with God, it is adding chaos (מ) back into the equation. But the finished work of Yah'shua has already brought peace! Romans 5:1 (KJV) states: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Yah'shua Christ.”

The Holy Spirit's daily work is to remind us of this peace and the total Dokimazō-approved truth of Yah'shua's finished work. When you hear a message, you simply ask: Does this uphold the perfect sufficiency of Yah'shua’s life, death, and resurrection?

If the answer is yes, you approve (Dokimazō) the spirit and rest in the freedom of Christ! If the answer is no, you dismiss it, knowing you are living from the victory where "greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4, KJV).

That’s the ultimate freedom from religious confusion—the perfect, simple truth for the beloved of Christ!

1 John 4:4 (KJV): Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Let this sink in. John doesn't say "you will overcome" or "you might overcome if you pray hard enough." He says you "have overcome" (the Greek word is Nikaō - νικάω, meaning "to conquer, to get the victory"). This victory is a done deal, a permanent status, because of your union with Yah'shua.

The Holy Spirit, the Pneuma of Christ, is IN you. This is the daily reminder of the goodness, love, and truth of Christ. You are not fighting for victory; you are living from victory. The one who is in you (Yah'shua, the Risen King) is infinitely greater than the defeated prince of this world. You were called out from the darkness into His marvelous light (ekklēsia), and in Him, your dominant identity is "Overcomer."

Agapē – The Finished Love (1 John 4:7-12)

Here John shifts into overdrive. The core of our being, our new life, and our authority is found in the simple, breathtaking truth: God is Love.

1 John 4:7-8 (KJV): Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

John isn't talking about a feeling or a transactional emotion. He is using the Greek word Agapē (ἀγάπη), not philia (brotherly affection) nor erōs (romantic desire), but Agapē. Agapē is the unconditional, sacrificial, divine love that originates only in God. It is His very nature.

And how did this Agapē show up for us?

1 John 4:10 (KJV): Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Yah'shua is the Propitiation (the Greek word is Hilasmos - ἱλασμός). This word means the atoning sacrifice—the full, complete, and final covering that permanently establishes God’s love for us. Yah'shua didn't move God to love us; He was the proof of God’s pre-existing, finished love for us! Love is not an emotion God has; it is who He is.

Love Made Perfect is Founded in As He Is, So Are You! (1 John 4:17-18)

Because of this radical, finished love, our relationship with God has been perfected. We are not waiting for perfection; we are already it in Christ.

John gives us one of the most freeing, identity-defining verses in the entire New Testament:

1 John 4:17 (KJV): Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

Read that last part again: "as he is, so are we in this world."

Not as you hope to be. Not as you will be in heaven. But as He is (perfect, righteous, beloved, accepted) right now, so are you right now, in this world! This truth demolishes all the fear and worry that keeps people trapped in a performance-based religious system, striving for something Yah'shua already accomplished.

1 John 4:18 (KJV): There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Fear has Torment. The Greek word here is Kolasis (κόλασις), which literally means punishment or chastisement. If you are constantly afraid of doing something wrong and incurring God’s wrath, you are still operating from an Old Covenant mindset. But because Yah'shua was your Hilasmos (propitiation), there is absolutely zero punishment left for you! God's love (His finished work) has cast out all fear of condemnation. You are free!

The Hebrew Whisper is the Strength of Love

To lock in this magnificent truth of God dwelling in us through Agapē, let's look at the ancient Hebrew word for "love": Ahab (אהב). (look at my revelation post dealing Abba)

In the ancient Hebrew pictographs, each letter is a picture that tells a story.

Aleph (א): The Ox Head – representing Strength, Leader, or Chief.
Hei (ה): The Window or Fence – representing Revelation, Breath, or Grace.
Bet (ב): The House – representing Dwelling, Family, or In.

When you put them together, Ahab (אהב) tells the story of love:

The Strong Leader's (Yah'shua's) Revealed (Grace) Within (us).

This beautiful ancient word screams the New Testament truth of 1 John 4!

Yah'shua, the Strong Leader, revealed the ultimate grace (His finished work), and now He has made His home (dwelt) in us through His Holy Spirit.

The entire Bible is about Yah'shua, and all of Yah'shua is about you, His beloved. Stop trying to earn something that has already been given. Stop trying to overcome a foe that has already been defeated. Stop fearing a Father who is literally Agapē. Rest in the love that is perfect, finished, and dwelling in our hearts, and live a life as the Overcomer we already are.

The One Who Prepares the Way

Whenever we are faced with a challenge so daunting that it feels like an insurmountable wall stands between us and our inheritance, that feeling of needing to "go out and come in" to conquer a land, a financial mountain, or a health struggle, often leaves the human heart paralysed by fear and inadequacy. But for the beloved of Christ, this is not our reality!

The Holy Spirit, abiding within, reminds us that we do not walk a path yet to be cleared. We walk a path already conquered and prepared by our King-Lover. The truth that "YHVH goes before you" is not an Old Covenant hope; it is a New Testament declaration of Christ's finished work that secures our complete, righteous and victorious dominion.

The Context of the Limits of the Law’s and the Judge’s Limitless Leadership

The glorious promise we stand upon is found at the monumental conclusion of the Old Covenant’s greatest figure, Moses. The full story leading up to the promise in Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV) is a perfect picture of the transition from Law to Grace, from human effort to divine finished work, introducing the concept of a Judge as a Forerunner and Leader.

The Law's Limit and The Judge's Commission

Deuteronomy 31:2-3 (KJV):

"And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan. The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.

Moses Cannot Cross: Moses, representing the Old Covenant Law, stands at the brink of the Promised Land but is prevented from entering (verse 2). The Law was perfect, but it could only bring you to the edge of the inheritance; it could never bring you into the Rest (Hebrews 4:8). The Law's work is finished; its purpose was only to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24).

The New Name, The True Judge: The leader commissioned to bring the beloved people into their dominion is Joshua (verse 3). This Hebrew name, Yĕhôshūa (or Yeshua), is the very name of Yah'shua (Jesus)! This is a profound type and shadow: The way into your New Testament inheritance—your spiritual rest, authority, and blessing—is secured not by the Law (Moses), but by Yah'shua Himself.

The Finished Word of Guarantee

The assurance is then given, first to the nation, and then specifically to Joshua in Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV):

"And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed."

The Judge Who Leads (Shaphat and Pānāh)

The promise that "The LORD goes before you" takes on a powerful layer of meaning when viewed through the lens of the Hebrew word for "Judge," revealing Christ as the ultimate Leader and Forerunner.

The Judge's Leadership and the Meaning of Shaphat

In the Old Covenant, the role of a "Judge" (Hebrew: שָׁפַט - Shāphat) was not primarily a courtroom adjudicator as we understand it, but a deliverer and leader who went before the people to clear the way for victory and establish order.

The Judges in the book of Judges (like Gideon, Deborah, Samson) were military and spiritual leaders who rescued and led Israel.
This points directly to Yah'shua, the ultimate Judge (King-Leader) who went before us on the cross, not only delivering us from the hand of the enemy but leading us into our inherited authority and dominion (Colossians 2:15).

The King-Lover's Act and Pānāh (To Turn the Face)

The divine act of "doth go before thee" in verse 8 is translated from the Hebrew root word פָּנָה (Pānāh).

The Name Daniel: Even the name Daniel (דָּנִיֵּאל - Dāniyyêl) is a compound of the word for "Judge" (Dān) and "God" (Ēl), meaning "God is my Judge." This means that God (Yah'shua) is not only the one who renders the verdict for you, but He is the Leader and Forerunner who guides you. He is the Judge who clears your path!

The Forerunner of Grace as the New Judge

The truth of Pānāh finds its glorious and finished reality in the New Testament:

The Greek word πρόδρομος (prodromos), translated "forerunner," means "one who runs ahead." Yah'shua is the Prodromos who ran ahead of His beloved, conquering death and securing our place of rest and authority in the heavenly places.
The Promise is Eternal (Greek: Aphiēmi):
The promise, "he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee," is explicitly quoted and applied to the believer under the New Testament:
Hebrews 13:5 (KJV): "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
The word "forsake" is from the Greek ἀφίημι (aphiēmi), meaning "to let go, to send away, to abandon." Because of Christ's finished work, you can be content (rest) in the knowledge that your King-Lover has secured your future and will never aphiēmi you.

We Walk in the Victory He Prepared

The entire Old Covenant context is a dramatic unveiling of God's perfect plan to transition us from reliance on works (Moses/Law) to reliance on Grace (Yah'shua/Joshua).

The Holy Spirit constantly reminds us that The Lord goes before us. This means the victory is not something we are trying to get, but something we are walking into! Our Judge is not standing behind us; He is Pānāh—He is ahead of us, clearing the path.

We are not entering a battle. Instead, we are simply walking out the inherited dominion that Christ’s finished work has secured for us.

Rest in His Pānāh today! Our path is cleared, our victory is guaranteed, and His presence will never leave us.

Isn't it marvellous that the One who secured our eternal redemption is the same one who, as our Judge and Leader, goes before us?

Why Old Skins Can't Hold New Wine

Have you ever encountered a truth so profound, so liberating, that it utterly transforms your understanding? Yet, often, our age-old drawback comes from religion – the man-made traditions, rules, and needless works we bind ourselves to without even considering their true origin. Just like the Pharisees and scribes of Jesus' day, we can inadvertently "make the word of God of none effect through your tradition" (Mark 7:13, KJV).

Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, often taught through parables, simple stories designed to cut through this religious fog and reveal layers of divine wisdom. Today, we're diving into one such profound parable from Luke 5:36-39 (KJV), a passage that brilliantly illustrates the radical, unmixable difference between the Old Covenant of Law and the New Testament of Grace.

"And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better."

Garments and Wine

Jesus uses two powerful everyday analogies: garments and wine. Both speak to the inherent incompatibility of mixing the old with the new.

Robes of Righteousness The first image is striking: you don't patch an old, worn-out garment with a piece of new, unshrunk cloth. Why? Because the new patch, after washing, will shrink and tear away from the brittle old fabric, making the rip worse than before. The new simply "agreeth not with the old."

What is this "new garment" in the context of our faith? It's nothing less than the Garment of Righteousness that God Himself provides! As Isaiah 61:10 (KJV) triumphantly declares: "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness..."

Our righteousness is not earned; it is imputed – freely given and credited to us – through our faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 3:22 (KJV) states, "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe..." And Philippians 3:9 (KJV) beautifully summarizes our position: "And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith." We don't try to stitch our old, tattered efforts onto this perfect, divine covering. It simply doesn't fit, and any attempt to do so will only result in spiritual tearing and confusion.

The Covenant of Grace Next, Jesus talks about new wine and wineskins. Ancient wineskins, made of animal hide, would stretch and become brittle with age. New wine (freshly squeezed grape juice), still fermenting, would expand and require supple, flexible new wineskins to contain it. Pour new wine into old skins, and the skins burst, wasting both the wine and the container.

The "New Wine" is none other than Jesus Christ Himself and the New Testament established through His blood (the freshly squeezed, perfect substance of salvation). His life, His sacrifice, and His resurrection inaugurated a radically different way of relating to God. The New Testament is based not on our performance, but on His finished work.

The Old Covenant (Law) demanded perfect obedience, but could not make us righteous (Romans 3:20, KJV: "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.").
The New Testament (Grace) declares us righteous through faith, by the blood of the Lamb.

The New Testament was sealed and confirmed by the shedding of Jesus' perfect blood. Hebrews 9:12 (KJV) proclaims, "Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us." And Hebrews 10:10 (KJV) assures us: "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." His "once for all" sacrifice fulfilled and superseded every Old Testament requirement.

And who are the "new wineskins" that can hold this explosive New Wine? We are! When we receive Christ, we are not just forgiven; we are made new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."). We are born again with a new nature, capable of receiving and containing the boundless life and power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9, KJV: "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.").

The Problem with Mixing Law + Grace = Confusion (Babylon)

Traditional religion often introduces a dangerous twist: conditional salvation. It teaches that before we can be truly renewed or filled with the Holy Spirit, we must perform certain actions – abandon old ways, "turn or burn," become holy through self-effort, "repent" in the sense of earning forgiveness. This sets up severe preconditions, creating a heavy burden for believers.

But Jesus' parable is "covenant talk." It exposes the utter incompatibility of trying to mix the Law with Grace. LAW + GRACE = BABYLON

Yes, you read that right. The very word "Babylon" (from the Hebrew Babel) means "confusion by mixture." It perfectly describes what happens when we attempt to blend the old system of human effort (Law) with God's perfect, finished work (Grace). It creates a confusing, burdensome religious system that obscures the glorious simplicity of the Gospel.

The Old Covenant said: "Do this and live." The New Testament declares: "It is done! Believe and live!" Any attempt to add "do this" to "it is done" leads to confusion and ultimately nullifies grace (Galatians 2:16, KJV: "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ..." and Romans 11:6, KJV: "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.").

The Bitter Fruits of Confusion - Unbelief and Stolen Inheritance

This confusion, this "Babylonian mixture," is the root of many lies that plague believers, "making the word of God of none effect" through man-made traditions (Mark 7:13). For more than 2000 years, religion (in all forms) has been a tool that mis-taught, misled, confused, twisted, and even brainwashed us into unbelief, especially concerning the glorious truths of God's provision in Christ.

Consider these common, yet spiritually debilitating, religious falsehoods that stem from mixing grace with law or pagan/man-made rituals:

"Healing was not part of the atoning sacrifice of the Messiah." (A demonic lie! Isaiah 53:5, KJV: "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." This includes physical healing!)
"Healing was only for the time of the Apostles so that they could come to believe." (A tradition that limits God's power!)
"Healing comes only from the doctors that God predestined." (A distortion that dismisses divine intervention and the finished work of Christ!)
"We should not discern the Body of Jesus for physical healing when taking holy communion." (A man-made rule that denies the fact that His physical body was smitten and broken for our healing!)
"Our affliction is God's will because He, in His sovereignty, allows it." (A grave misunderstanding of God's heart! While God is sovereign, His will for us is life and blessing, not sickness and suffering. John 10:10, KJV: "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.")
"God is teaching him or her a lesson, and they will emerge a better Christian once it passes." (A cruel lie that attributes the work of the enemy to a loving Father.)
"God has a plan with afflicting us and making us suffer; we should abide because of God's plan with affliction." (This is directly contrary to God's nature as fully revealed in Christ.)
"It is a necessary thorn in our flesh the same as what Paul had, and God is not prepared to take it away." (A misinterpretation of Paul's specific trial, which very well could have been a person or persons and is used to justify perpetual suffering, rather than believing for freedom.)

These are all unbelief and demonic lies that Mark 7:13 perfectly addresses: "Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye." They seek to rob us of our inheritance in Christ and negate the power of His finished work which provided not only spiritual redemption but also physical healing and wholeness.

The Unforgettable Taste

Here's the awe-inspiring, mind-blowing conclusion of Jesus' parable:

"No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better."

At first glance, this might seem like a contradiction. Is Jesus saying the Old Covenant is better? Absolutely not! He's exposing a human reality: once you've been accustomed to the taste of the old system – the self-reliance, the performance-based acceptance, the striving, the justifying of suffering – it's hard for many to immediately appreciate the radical freedom and simplicity of the new. Their palate is used to the old flavor. And that is how we have been brainwashed by religion.

But here’s the glorious truth hidden in plain sight: If you have truly tasted the New Wine – Jesus Christ and His ultimate grace – you will never, ever again desire the old!

As Psalm 34:8 (KJV) beautifully invites: "O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him."

Once your spiritual palate experiences the unmerited favor, the absolute forgiveness, the completed righteousness, and the divine health that is yours in Christ, the burden of the Law and the lies of religion become unpalatable. The very Spirit of God living within you creates a new desire. Ezekiel 36:26-27 (KJV) prophesied this inward transformation: "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you... And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes..."

When you taste the New Wine, when you truly grasp the finished work of Christ, you will automatically pour it into the new container that is YOU! Your being is fundamentally changed, renewed, and capable of holding the fullness of God's grace and all its benefits, including healing and wholeness.

HALLELUYAH! Embrace the New Wine. Let the old be acknowledged for what it was, but fully embrace the new reality of God's ultimate grace, forever made perfect in Jesus Christ. There's no mixing, no striving, just pure, unadulterated grace, shattering every lie and tradition that would negate the living Word of God.

Wives and Submission, Husbands and Heading

The Divine Pattern of Marriage

What may be corrupted as a military instruction, is actually a divine guideline for sensible living in a marriage. The Apostle Paul's words in Ephesians chapter five, particularly the part for wives to “submit” to their husbands and for husbands to be the "head" of the wife, present a profound and often misunderstood picture of the marital relationship. To truly grasp this divine pattern, we must go beyond a modern-day, surface-level reading and examine the original Greek, focusing on the finished work of Christ, which transforms all human relationships and ultimately finds its glorious consummation in the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

First, let us clarify a critical translation. What is translated as "church" in the King James Version of our Bibles is actually a corruption of the original Greek word ekklēsia. This word does not refer to a building or an organization. It simply means "called out from amongst" or "summoned." An ekklēsia can be a single person or a group of people. The act of ekklēsia is to be summoned or called out from the "kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Light," and from the "kingdom of death into the Kingdom of Life." As stated in 1 Peter 2:9 (KJV), "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."

The word "church" in the Bible is a foreign word borrowed from the Germanic word kirche, which originated from a medieval Greek word meaning "the house of the Lord." This word has no resemblance to the original word ekklēsia. Therefore, when Paul uses the term ekklēsia, he is speaking of those called believers, individuals who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and called out from the world. This is the body that Christ is the head of, and it is this dynamic body of believers that the husband-wife relationship is to mirror, reflecting the deep, intimate bond between Christ and His redeemed ones, His bride, the ones responding to His proposal, the ones whom He is preparing heavenly marriage feast for.

Kephalē and Hupotassō

A proper understanding of the New Testament's marital guide hinges on the meaning of two key Greek words: hupotassō (submit) and kephalē (head).

The Meaning of Hupotassō

The Greek word for "submit" is hupotassō. While it has military origins, its use in the New Testament is far more nuanced.

Crucially, the command for submission is first given to all believers in the preceding verse: "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God" (Ephesians 5:21, KJV). This establishes a foundational principle of mutual submission. The wife's submission is a specific application of this broader, all-encompassing call for believers to defer to one another out of reverence for Christ.

It is a voluntary act of deference, a willingness to cooperate, born not out of inferiority but out of a profound honor for God's divine order. The hupotassō of a wife is not to a master, but to a partner who is called to love her sacrificially. It is an active participation in a mutual relationship, where her role is to align with the partnership in a way that honors both her husband and God's plan. This willing alignment is a physical expression of the spiritual reality where believers joyfully align with Christ, who is the source of their salvation and life.

The Meaning of Kephalē

The Greek word kephalē, translated as "head," is often misunderstood as a simple term for "authority" or "leader." While it can carry this meaning, its primary metaphorical meaning, especially in the context of the New Testament, is "source" or "origin."

Consider the full context in which Paul uses the term: "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the congregation: and he is the saviour of the body" (Ephesians 5:23, KJV). Christ is not merely the ruler of the body; He is its "Saviour" (verse 23) and the one who "nourisheth and cherisheth" it (verse 29). The body receives its life, its sustenance, and its very being from Christ, its source.

Therefore, when Paul says the husband is the kephalē of the wife, he is not merely establishing a chain of command. He is calling the husband to be the source of life, provision, and protection for his wife, just as Christ is the source of life for the called-out ones. This redefines authority not as a position of power to be wielded but as a responsibility to serve, love, and lay down one's life.

A New Foundation

The divine pattern for marriage is not a set of rules but a reflection of the glorious and finished work of Christ. It is a relationship in equal terms, egalitarian - the new foundation. The old covenant, with its laws and structures, was a shadow of the reality found in Christ. He completely fulfilled the demands of the law and ushered in a new covenant, a will and testament based on grace, where our identity is no longer defined by external distinctions like ethnicity or social status, but by our new creation in Him. As Galatians 3:28 (KJV) affirms, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."

This finished work on the cross abolished all forms of a domineering or oppressive hierarchy. It levels the playing field. The cross is the ultimate display of kephalē as a source of self-sacrificial love. Christ, as God Himself, "made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7, KJV). He humbled Himself, not to be a ruler over us, but to become a servant. He died for His beloved and they are now the called-out ones, and in doing so, He demonstrated that true authority in the kingdom of God is an authority of love and service, not of power.

The very essence of His finished work—His perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection—is the foundation of this will-and-testament reality.

This is the pattern the husband is called to follow. His love for his wife is not to be a self-serving, demanding love but a Christ-like, self-sacrificial love. "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the congregation, and gave himself for it" (Ephesians 5:25, KJV). This love is a conscious choice to cherish, nourish, and sanctify his wife, a powerful and transformative act that directly mirrors Christ's redemptive work for His people. As Paul writes in Colossians 3:19 (KJV), "Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them."

As 2 Corinthians 6:16 (KJV) states, "For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."

The Bride’s Righteousness and the Marriage Feast

The culmination of this divine design for marriage is found in the final union of Christ with His bride, the ekklēsia, at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. The earthly marriage is a foreshadowing of this ultimate, heavenly union. As the Amplified Bible puts it, "The marriage of the Lamb [at last] has come, and His bride has prepared herself. She has been permitted [given freely] to dress in fine (radiant) linen, dazzling and white—for the fine linen is (signifies, represents) the righteousness (the upright, just, and godly living, deeds, and conduct, and right standing with God) of the saints (God’s holy people)" (Revelation 19:7-8).

This "fine linen" is not a righteousness the bride earned, but a marriage gift, one that was freely granted, a testament to Christ's perfect sacrifice on the cross. We know this from Isaiah 61:10 (KJV): "I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels."

The phrase "covered in garments of salvation" in the original Hebrew is a powerful pictograph that speaks of being "totally covered with Jesus," our Yahushua (Jesus), the Hand consumed by desire. He is our righteousness, as 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV) makes clear: "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." As Romans 4:6 (KJV) also says, "Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works."

This is not a message of exclusion but a profound revelation of God's grace, echoing the story of David's anointing in 1 Samuel 16. Just as Jesse called all his sons, but only David (the beloved), the least likely, was chosen to be king, so too does God offer an unrestricted invitation to all humanity.

The parables of the vineyard workers and the wedding feast confirm this message. The workers who did the least work received the full wage of grace, and the guest who was cast out was not for being unworthy, but for rejecting the King’s free gift of a wedding garment—His righteousness.

The full meaning of this becomes clear in Revelation 17:14: "and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful." Those that are there with Him (meta- joined, when used in composition it extends the meaning of being of substantially in the same relations of participation or proximity, transfer or sequence, thus to agree.). The called are those who receive the salvation invitation. The chosen are the recipients of the Father's divine election, a decision rooted in His eternal love and grace. And the faithful are those who respond to the call and accept the Father's choice through faith in His Son, Jesus.

The husband's role as a loving source in marriage is a temporal reflection of Christ's eternal role, and the wife’s joyous alignment is a physical expression of the spiritual readiness and receipt of the bride for the proposal of the Lamb. The whole of the Bible is about Jesus, our righteousness, and His love for us, His ekklēsia. Every marriage lived out in accordance with these principles serves as a powerful testimony (even a prophesy) to the grace and redemptive work of the Lord.

The saying, "The eyes are the window to the soul," is a perpetual expression (alliteration intended) we’ve all heard. It suggests that a person’s eyes reveal their deepest feelings, intentions, and character. While this exact phrase is not found in the Bible, it does capture a profound spiritual truth that Jesus Himself taught in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.

In this blog post I will delve into the biblical foundation of this idea, exploring what Jesus meant by the "lamp of the body," and how this concept is directly connected to the finished work of Christ and the glorious Gospel of Grace.

A Deeper Look at the Lamp of the Body

Origin of the Saying

The phrase has been used in Western literature and philosophy for centuries. Its earliest known use is often attributed to the Roman orator and philosopher Cicero who wrote, "the face is the image of the soul, and the eyes are its interpreters." Other notable figures who used similar expressions include:

Leonardo da Vinci: He wrote, "The eyes... are the window of the soul, the chief organ whereby the understanding can be made manifest to the soul."
William Shakespeare: In his play, Richard III, he wrote, "But when I was a-frown a villain... I looked upon his eyes, which are the windows of his soul."

Greek: Haplous (Healthy): The word translated as "healthy" or "good" in Matthew 6:22 is haplous, which literally means "single," "sincere," or "undivided." It describes an eye that is focused on a single, pure objective—the truth of who God is and His Kingdom. A person with a haplous eye or single-minded faith in who God is, free from divided corruption, tradition and loyalties with ulterior motives. Their gaze is fixed on Christ, and His fully accomplished work.
Greek: Poneros (Unhealthy): The opposite of haplous is poneros, which means "wicked" or "evil." An "unhealthy" eye is one that is focused on worldly things—division from greed, lust, pride, and selfish ambition. This divided and wicked focus fills a person's life with spiritual darkness, leading to a life that is spiritually blind and without God's light.

Jesus’s teaching reveals that our receiving in faith is a direct reflection of our inner spiritual condition. What (or rather Who) we look at, appropriate in our lives, and what we focus on reflects in our souls.

The Single Eye vs. Double-Mindedness

Jesus’s teaching on the "single eye" finds a powerful complement in the Epistle of James, where the author warns against being "double-minded." The two concepts are two sides of the same coin, with one describing the state of spiritual health and the other describing spiritual instability. (see this post)

In James 1:8, the author describes the one who doubts God as a “double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” The Greek word for "double-minded" is dipsychos, meaning "two-souled." This is the very antithesis of the haplous or "single" eye. (see also this post)

A double-minded person is like a wave of the sea, tossed back and forth by the wind (James 1:6). They are trying to serve two masters—God and the world—but as Jesus himself declared in Matthew 6:24, "You cannot serve both God and money." This inner conflict leads to spiritual and emotional instability.

The connection between the “single eye” and “double-mindedness” is clear:

The Single Eye (Haplous): Represents a single-minded devotion to the finished work of Christ. This person's belief, outlook and spiritual vision are aligned with who God is, resulting in a life filled with spiritual light and stability.
The Double-Minded Heart (Dipsychos): Represents a heart filled with doubt and unbelief sprouting from a mixed Gospel message divided between God and the world. This person’s inner vision is blurred and corrupted, leading to a life of spiritual darkness and instability.

The Gospel of Grace, therefore, is the only solution for the double-minded heart.

Light for a Darkened World

Before Christ's finished work, all of humanity's "eyes" were inherently "unhealthy" or poneros due to sin. We were spiritually blinded, walking in darkness without the ability to truly see God. The Bible describes this state:

Ephesians 4:18: "They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts."
2 Corinthians 4:4: "The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

Humanity was trapped in a state where the "light within" was truly "darkness." The more we tried to find light through our own efforts or good deeds in accordance with the law, the more our spiritual vision was clouded by sin and self-righteousness.

The Source of True Light

The Gospel of Grace declares that Jesus Christ came to be the "light of the world" (John 8:12). He did what we could never do for ourselves. By living a perfect, sinless life and dying on the cross to atone for our sins, He accomplished a redemptive work that changes everything.

Justification: Through the finished work of Christ, our sins are forgiven, and we are declared righteous in God’s sight once and for all. This act of justification removes the barrier of sin that caused our spiritual blindness.
Sanctification: The Holy Spirit now indwells believers, consummating spiritual transformation and sanctification. The Spirit gives us new spiritual "eyes" and a new heart. As 2 Corinthians 4:6 says, "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ."

The finished work of Christ is the source of the divine light that now fills the hearts of believers. The Gospel of Grace is the power of God unto salvation in all regards, cleaning our inner vision, enabling us to have a "healthy eye" and move from a state of double-mindedness to one of single-minded devotion to God.

A Single Eye

So, what does it look like to have a "healthy" or "single" eye in light of the Gospel? It means:

Our gaze is on Christ: We are no longer consumed by our world of make-belief, traditions and like things that we do (Mar 7:13 KJV). Even the fleeting desires and distractions of the world fall outside of our vantage point. Our primary focus is on Jesus, the "founder and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2).
Our motives are pure: A single eye means our belief, appropriation, and our actions are motivated by our belief in the fully accomplished work of Christ, not by self-justification, our own ambitions to attain salvation or the pursuit of law-driven worthiness.
What we believe reflects God’s glory: When our hearts are filled with God's light━the finished work and glory of Jesus, our actions naturally follow our belief. We will walk in the light as He is in the light (1 John 1:5-7), and our words will be a testimony to His goodness.

The "eyes are the window to the soul" is a powerful truth. It reminds us that our spiritual state is not hidden from God—and ultimately, it cannot be hidden from others. The Gospel of Grace, however, is the beautiful promise that we no longer have to live in spiritual darkness. Through the finished work of Christ, our "eyes" are cleansed, our "souls" are lit up, and our entire lives radiate the finished work and glory of God.

When we connect Jeremiah 1:12 with the New Testament revelation that Jesus Christ is the living Word of God from the very beginning, a simple promise becomes a profound, personal declaration of God's love and absolute grace. The focus shifts from a generic promise to the person of Jesus Himself.

The verse in question reads: "Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it." (Jeremiah 1:12, KJV).

In many translations, the word "hasten" is rendered as "watching over" or "alert to." The Hebrew word here is shāqad (שָׁקַד), which literally means to be awake, on the alert, to watch, or to be intent on something. In the context of the finished work of Christ, this doesn't mean God is waiting for a future event to unfold. Instead, God was explaining to Jeremiah the eternal reality and context of His Word—Jesus Christ—in the salvation plan that was executed on the cross. God's attentiveness (shāqad) was His vigilant focus on ensuring that His Word, Jesus, would be the complete and final fulfillment of all promises. God's watchfulness is not about a future task to be completed, but on the triumphant reality that it is already done in Christ.

But what is this "word" that God is so intently watching?

The Prophetic Meaning of Jeremiah's Name

Before we delve into the "Word," let's consider the name of the prophet himself. The Hebrew name Jeremiah is Yirmeyahu (יִרְמְיָהוּ). This name is a powerful prophecy in itself, composed of two parts:

Yirmeyah: This part is a verbal form derived from the Hebrew root rum (רוּם), meaning "to be high," "to lift up," or "to exalt."
Yahu: This is a shortened form of God's covenant name, Yahweh.

Therefore, the name Jeremiah literally means "Yahweh will exalt" or "The Lord exalts." This meaning is a beautiful paradox to the prophet's life, which was filled with hardship, persecution, and lament. The man himself was not exalted in the eyes of his peers or the world. He was the "weeping prophet," often rejected and imprisoned. Yet, his name points directly to God's ultimate plan of exaltation, not for the prophet, but for the Word of God that he carried. Jeremiah's name foreshadows the ultimate exaltation of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who, though despised and rejected, would be lifted up on a cross and then exalted to the right hand of the Father.

Jesus is the Living Word (Logos)

The answer to what the "word" is lies in the New Testament. The Gospel of John begins with this profound truth: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." (John 1:1-3, KJV).

This "Word" (Greek: Logos - Λόγος) is identified as Jesus Christ in John 1:14: "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

The Greek word Logos is far more than a simple word or utterance. It embodies divine reason, creative power, and the very expression of God's mind. To say Jesus is the Logos is to say He is the mind and intent of God made manifest. The term Logos is also the root of our English word "logic." To say that Jesus is the Logos is to say that He is the very logic of God. The logic of God is not cold or detached reasoning, but the divine, coherent, and eternally perfect plan of salvation. It was the logic of God that demanded a price for sin, and it was the logic of God that provided the perfect, graceful solution through His Son. The very name Jesus, or Yahshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ) in Hebrew, means "Yahweh is salvation." Therefore, Yahshua is not just the Word, but the embodied logic of a saving God. He is God's ultimate communication to humanity.

Jeremiah 1:12 Reinterpreted with Christ at the Center

When we understand that Jesus is the Word, Jeremiah's vision takes on a whole new dimension, shifting our focus from a promise to a person, and from works to grace:

God's Promise is a Person, Not Just a Pronouncement. When God says, "I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled," He is not just talking about a set of laws or predictions in a scroll. He is saying, "I am watching to see that My Son, Jesus Christ, is brought forth and His redemptive work is accomplished." God's watchful eye was on the timeline of human history, ensuring that all events, prophecies, and covenants were perfectly aligned to bring forth the person of Christ. This is not about a generic plan; it's about a personal, living promise.
The Almond Tree Foreshadows Christ, the Firstfruits of Grace. In the preceding verse, God asks Jeremiah, "What seest thou?" Jeremiah replies, "I see a rod of an almond tree" (Jeremiah 1:11, KJV). The Hebrew for "almond tree" is shāqēd (שָׁקֵד), which comes from the same root as shāqad ("watching over"). This is a beautiful wordplay. The almond tree is the first tree to "awake" in the spring, a harbinger of new life. This finished work is the absolute end of all striving, all Law, and all human effort to be right with God. The grace is already extended; our part is simply to receive it. As the ultimate expression of God's grace, Jesus' sacrifice fulfilled every promise and ended the need for any further works.

Word-Picture for Shāqad (שָׁקַד)

The concept of a "word-picture" comes from the ancient Hebrew writing system, where each letter was originally a pictograph—a small drawing representing a concept. While the practice of interpreting words this way is considered speculative by many modern scholars, it can offer a deeper layer of meaning by connecting the word's sound to its visual, ancient root.

The Hebrew word for "to watch" or "be alert" is shāqad (שָׁקַד), and the word for "almond tree" is shāqēd (שָׁקֵד). They share the same three Hebrew letters, which create a powerful word-picture.

Shin (ש): The pictograph for shin is a picture of two front teeth. This represents concepts like devour, destroy, or sharp. It can also represent change, as in how teeth change food.
Qof (ק): The pictograph for qof is a picture of the sun on the horizon, or the back of a head. It represents circle, time, end of a cycle, or to condense.
Dalet (ד): The pictograph for dalet is a picture of a door. It represents a door, entrance, or path.

When combined, these pictographs could form a word-picture that reinforces the meaning of watching and being alert. One beautiful interpretation, especially in light of the New Testament, is that the "door" is Jesus Himself. He even said, "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved" (John 10:9). In this context, the word-picture becomes: The teeth (ש) of the cycle (ק) consume sin and death, and Christ is the Door (ד) who ushers in a new season of life. The "teeth of the cycle" represent the ending of the old cycle of the Law and trying to achieve righteousness through one's own works. Jesus, as the Door, brings about this change, providing the entrance to eternal life and a new creation for all who believe. God's watchful eye was on His Son, the very Door of salvation, bringing the old cycle to its final end and ushering in the new and eternal reality of grace.

Affirming God's Watchful Grace

The New Testament provides clear parallels that connect God's watchful eye with the person of Jesus, the Word, and the finished work of grace:

Galatians 4:4-5 (KJV): "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." This verse explicitly states that God was watching and waiting for the "set time" to arrive before sending His Son. The timing was not random; it was a fulfillment of His watchful word and plan. The Hebrew word for "fullness" (mālē') and the Greek equivalent (plērōma) both carry the sense of completion. God was watching over the timeline until everything was complete—every prophecy, every type, every shadow—to send His Son and provide grace to redeem us and give us a new identity as sons of God.
Hebrews 1:1-2 (KJV): "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;" This passage confirms that God's ultimate and final word to humanity is not a written text or a series of rituals but a living person—His Son, Jesus Christ. Every word spoken by the prophets was a foreshadowing of the final, complete Word to come. And now, because of Christ's finished work, God continues to speak to every believer by His indwelling Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth (John 14:26).
1 Peter 1:10-11 (KJV): "Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow." This verse reveals that even the prophets of the Old Testament, like Jeremiah, were speaking of and searching for the very person of Christ. The "word" they were communicating was, in fact, the "Spirit of Christ" working through them. The finished work of Christ is the direct result of God's watchful eye. This work was one offer, once for all time (Hebrews 9:26). It was not a temporary solution, but a permanent, eternally effective sacrifice that cleansed the sins of everyone in all of history—those who came before, those who lived during His time, and those who are yet to come. God didn't need us to do anything to earn this grace. He didn't require us to fulfill the Law perfectly. He was watching over the fulfillment of His Word, His Son, who fulfilled it all for us.

The phrase "It is finished" (Tetelestai - Τετέλεσται) in John 19:30 is a Greek verb that means "paid in full." It’s a commercial term used to signify that a debt has been completely settled. This single declaration on the cross is the culmination of Jeremiah 1:12. God’s watchful eye saw His Word, Jesus, take on the total debt of all humanity, once and for all. This finished work is so complete that it makes the old covenant and its legal requirements obsolete. As Colossians 2:14 declares, God has "canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross." The old ordinances and the Law itself were nailed to the cross, rendered powerless over the believer. With the debt fully settled, the Law, which served as our legal indictment, has been made obsolete, as Hebrews 8:13 explains: "By calling this covenant 'new,' he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear."

This is not a day to be observed, but a day to be celebrated as a shadow completely fulfilled by the reality of Jesus Christ.

Many people, including Christians, feel obliged to follow Jewish traditions and celebrate these feasts. However, this comes down to a fundamental choice: do you celebrate the shadow, or do you embrace the Person? The Old Covenant law and its festivals were given to Israel to point them to their need for a Savior, not as a means of salvation. They are a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith (Galatians 3:24). You are either under the law, striving to do the works of men to achieve your own salvation, or you choose to receive the free gift of grace—Jesus Christ Himself.

The Yom Kippur Context

Yom Kippur is situated between the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) on the 1st and 2nd of Tishri and the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) on the 15th through 21st of Tishri. The High Priest had to first purify himself. He would immerse in a mikvah (ritual bath) to purify himself from all uncleanness and then clothe himself in special golden garments. After offering the daily morning sacrifice (Tamid), he would immerse himself again, this time changing into simple white linen garments. This was a vivid reminder that no man, not even the high priest, could approach God in his own glory or splendor, but only in humility and purity.

Christ's Fulfillment: Jesus did not need to purify Himself, for He was without sin (Hebrews 4:15). He is our spotless High Priest. He entered the heavenly Holy of Holies not in earthly garments but in the purity of His own being.

2. The Sacrificial Animals

The Kohen Gadol would present a bull as a personal sin-offering for himself and his household. After slaughtering the bull, he would receive its blood in a bowl. Next, he would cast lots over two goats—one "for the Lord" and one "for Azazel" (the scapegoat). A red band was tied to the horns of the scapegoat. The Hebrew word Azazel is a unique term, often translated as "complete removal" or "entire separation," signifying the final expulsion of sin.

Christ's Fulfillment: Jesus perfectly fulfilled both roles. He was the sacrifice for our sins, taking on our guilt and shedding His own blood for our atonement (Romans 5:9). He was also the scapegoat, upon whom all our sins were laid. As Isaiah 53:6 says, "the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." And just as the scapegoat was sent away, our sins are now "as far as the east is from the west" (Psalm 103:12), completely removed from us.

3. Entering the Holy of Holies

With the blood of the bull and goat, the Kohen Gadol would enter the Kadosh Hakadashim (Holy of Holies), the innermost chamber where the Ark of the Covenant was kept. Before entering, he would take a special shovel of embers from the altar and a vessel of incense. He would burn the incense to create a cloud that would obscure the mercy seat from his view, ensuring he would not see God directly and die.

Once inside, he would sprinkle the blood of the bull seven times before the Ark to atone for the priests, and then the blood of the goat seven times to atone for the people. This ritual, done on behalf of the entire nation, was the central act of the day.

Christ's Fulfillment: Jesus, our perfect High Priest, entered the "most holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption" (Hebrews 9:12). He did not use the blood of animals but "by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place." He didn't need to sprinkle blood on an earthly mercy seat because He is our mercy seat (Romans 3:25). The finality of His one-time sacrifice is what makes the Day of Atonement obsolete for the believer.

4. The Confession and Release

After the blood rituals, the High Priest would lay his hands on the Azazel goat and confess all the sins of Israel, symbolically transferring their transgressions onto the animal. The goat was then led into the wilderness and either released or, in later years, pushed off a cliff to prevent its return. The returning of a goat was seen as a bad omen, a sign that the atonement was not accepted. This ritual was meant to show the sins were "gone."

Christ's Fulfillment: Our sins aren't just covered; they are gone forever. Jesus "took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross" (Colossians 2:14). The efficacy of His work means our forgiveness is not a hopeful wish but a secured reality. He didn't just carry our sins away; He blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us... having forgiven us all trespasses (Colossians 2:13-14).

A Better High Priest, a Perfect Atonement

The Day of Atonement was a burdensome series of rituals. The High Priest wore five sets of garments, immersed in the mikvah five times, and washed his hands and feet ten times. Multiple sacrifices were made. All this was done with the hope that the atonement was accepted. The Jewish Talmud even states, "Yom Kippur atones for those who repent and does not atone for those who do not repent," leaving a person to hope they didn't forget a sin.

We, however, have a perfect High Priest in Jesus. As Hebrews 9:11-14 beautifully explains:

“But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

All the old rituals are obsolete. The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom at the moment of Jesus's death (Matthew 27:51), signifying that the way to God's presence is now open to everyone. We no longer need to hope that our sins are covered; we know they are forgiven. Our focus is not on a day of atonement but on the reality of our redemption and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, who offered Himself once for all (Hebrews 10:10). We are already right with God, having been perfected forever by this one sacrifice (Hebrews 10:14).

What remains for a follower of Jesus is not to do, but to receive and to celebrate Jesus!

Final Feasts Fulfilled

It's incredible how many believers feel a need to celebrate the Jewish feasts, seemingly missing a crucial point. What’s even more amazing is how perfectly and completely Jesus fulfilled every one of these festivals. They are but a shadow, with Christ as the substance.

Each year, around September, the Jewish feast of Rosh Hashanah is celebrated. The date changes annually on our Western calendar because it's not synchronized with the Hebrew calendar. This observance, along with the others, points to a deeper reality now found in Jesus Christ.

What Is Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah literally means “head of the year” and is a two-day celebration of the Jewish New Year. It's observed on the first and second days of the month of Tishri, marking the start of the Jewish civil year. Some Jewish scholars believe it also commemorates the creation of the world and Israel's new beginning after their exodus from Egypt.

The customs for Rosh Hashanah include sounding the shofar (ram’s horn) and eating symbolic foods like apples dipped in honey to represent a sweet new year. For traditional and legalistic Jews, it's also a time of repentance and prayers for forgiveness, beginning in the preceding week. This prepares them for the most important feast, the Feast of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) nine days later, and then the Feast of Sukkot (Tabernacles) five days after that.

Why Do We Not Celebrate This Feast?

Those called in Christ are not obligated to celebrate the Jewish feasts. As the bride of Christ, why would we return to celebrating a shadow when we have the Person Himself? As Colossians 2:16-17 says, “Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.” Why hug the picture when we have the real Person, Jesus, who has been raised and now lives in our hearts? All the law, the prophets, and the feasts are carefully and completely fulfilled in Messiah Yeshua. Our focus therefore should be on celebrating Him and His finished work.

The term Rosh Hashanah doesn't even appear in the original Hebrew Old Covenant (Books of the Law). Leviticus 23:24 refers to this day as “a holy convocation, a memorial with the blowing of trumpets,” calling it Zikhron Teru'ah. Numbers 29:1 calls it Yom Teru'ah (Day of blowing the horn). This is where we get the reference, the "Feast of Trumpets."

The traditions and rituals surrounding the feasts have become so burdensome that, as Jesus said, they “make the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do” (Mark 7:13). The law and its festivals were given to Israel to point them to their need for a Savior, not as a means of salvation. They are a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith (Galatians 3:24).

The Prophetic Fulfillment of the Feast of Trumpets

The Feast of Trumpets, with its fanfare and call to assembly, finds a powerful fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ. This feast, which commemorated a new beginning and was a call to assemble, was not a random act. It was a prophetic sign. In Matthew 24:31, Jesus declares, "And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." This speaks not of a future event we must prepare for, but of the final and ultimate call to assembly of all believers—a gathering that is made possible by Christ's work, not ours.

The "last trump" in 1 Corinthians 15:52 is often linked to the Feast of Trumpets. However, from a New Testament perspective, it refers to the final military trumpet call, a summons signifying that the army is complete and ready for battle. Our assurance doesn't come from waiting for a sound, but from already being His elect. As Ephesians 1:4 states, He "chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love."

The trumpets sounded to announce the arrival of a king or to gather an army. In a spiritual sense, the gospel message—the good news of Jesus's death and resurrection—is the true, ultimate trumpet call. It has already been sounded, heralding the arrival of our King and calling us into His presence and His army. Romans 10:18 says, "But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: 'Their sound has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.'" This sound is the gospel, which has been calling people from every nation, tribe, and tongue to assemble under the banner of Christ.

Yom Kippur, the Shadow of Atonement

To truly appreciate Jesus's fulfillment of the Day of Atonement, it's essential to understand its historical performance. As commanded in Leviticus 16, the rituals of Yom Kippur were incredibly precise and dramatic, all pointing to a greater reality.

In the tabernacle and, later, the Jerusalem temples, Yom Kippur was the holiest day of the year, a day of fasting and solemnity for the entire nation of Israel. It was the one day when the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, the innermost chamber where God's presence was believed to dwell, to make atonement for the sins of the people. This was a complex, multi-stage ritual:

Preparation and Purification: The high priest first had to purify himself. He would bathe and change into special white linen garments, symbolizing purity and humility, not the ornate robes he wore the rest of the year. This was a vivid reminder that no one, not even the high priest, could approach God without being cleansed.
The Sacrifices: The high priest would then take two goats. One was chosen as the sin offering for the Lord, and the other as the scapegoat. The high priest would sacrifice the first goat and sprinkle its blood inside the Holy of Holies, on and in front of the mercy seat. This act was to atone for the sins of the priests themselves and the entire nation of Israel.
The Scapegoat: The second goat, the scapegoat, was brought forward. The high priest would lay his hands on its head and confess the sins of all the people of Israel, symbolically transferring their transgressions onto the animal. The goat was then led away into the wilderness, where it was released. The idea was that the sins of the people were being carried away and removed from the camp, a tangible picture of divine forgiveness.

This annual ritual was a beautiful but temporary solution. It had to be repeated every year because the blood of animals could never truly take away sin. As the writer of Hebrews explains, these offerings were merely a shadow, a temporary fix that pointed to the ultimate sacrifice to come.

Our Ultimate Atonement

The historical performance of Yom Kippur perfectly sets the stage for the finished work of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:11-12 says, "But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood, He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption."

Jesus is the fulfillment of every aspect of Yom Kippur:

He is the High Priest, who didn’t need to atone for His own sins because He was sinless.
He is the sacrifice, the Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world. His blood, unlike that of bulls and goats, was perfect and completely effective.
He is the fulfillment of the scapegoat, carrying our sins not into a wilderness but on His own body on the cross, removing them from us forever (Isaiah 53:6).

The annual ritual of Yom Kippur is now obsolete. The veil in the temple, which separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple, was torn from top to bottom at the moment of Jesus's death (Matthew 27:51). This act symbolized that through Christ's sacrifice, the way to God's presence is now open to everyone, not just the high priest on one day a year. We don't need to fast and mourn to prepare for an atonement. We are already right with God, perfected forever by one sacrifice (Hebrews 10:14).

The trumpet has already sounded, the Atonement has already been made, and the way to the Father is forever open. Our celebration is not in an annual feast, but in the constant reality of our redemption and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Those Called-in-Christ and the Shofar

Our focus should be on Jesus and the finished work of the cross, the resounding shofar of His grace echoing in our hearts constantly! We are already right with God because of Jesus!

This brings us to the true meaning of the church. The Greek word used in the Bible, which was incorrectly translated to "church," is actually ekklēsia. It simply means "called out from amongst" the earthly masses. It isn't a building, a denomination, or a religious system. It's you. You are His called-out ones. You are His!

Have you ever considered the sheer magnitude of what Christ accomplished for us? It's not merely a "get out of hell free" card, but an invitation into a life of profound partnership with the Divine, marked by dominion and infused with divine virtue. Peter's opening words in his second epistle are a stunning declaration of this reality, anchored firmly in the finished work of Jesus.

Let's delve into 2 Peter 1:1-4 (KJV) and uncover the glorious truths for the believer.

"Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

As 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV) declares, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." We didn't achieve this; Christ accomplished it on the cross, making us righteous in God's sight, once and for all. This is the bedrock of our grace.

It's a common challenge in the secular world, and it highlights a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Bible teaches about sin and salvation. To truly grasp the Gospel message, we may need to delve into the most profound declaration ever made by the greatest prophet that ever lived, John the Baptist (Luke 7:28). And perhaps it's time to accept that our part is all about receiving (lambano), that comes with the afforded righteousness and gloriousness of the absolute Grace extended onto us, shed abroad from before the foundation of the earth.

So, imagine the scene on the dusty banks of the Jordan River, a crowd gathered around John the Baptist, a wild-looking prophet whose life's mission was to prepare the way for the Messiah. People from all walks of life came to him, confessing their sins and seeking a cleansing baptism. John's ministry was powerful, yet he consistently pointed beyond himself to the One who was to come.

Then, one day, as Jesus approached, John called out a monumental declaration, so utterly foundational to Christian faith, that it echoes through history: "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29, KJV).

This mirrors Jesus, who, as the Son of God, displayed divine power in His miracles, healings, and raising of the dead (e.g., John 11:43-44, the raising of Lazarus; Luke 7:11-17, raising the widow's son).
Anointed by God: Elisha was the successor to Elijah, receiving a double portion of his spirit (2 Kings 2:9-14). This anointing symbolized God's special favor and empowerment, prefiguring Jesus' anointing by the Holy Spirit (e.g., Matthew 3:16-17, Jesus' baptism).
Rejected and Persecuted: Though a prophet of God, Elisha faced opposition and rejection (e.g., 2 Kings 6:31, the king's threat). This foreshadows Jesus' rejection by His own people and His suffering at the hands of those He came to save (e.g., Isaiah 53:3 - "He is despised and rejected of men...").
His Death Leading to Life: Even in death, Elisha's bones brought life. This points to the ultimate paradox of the cross: Jesus' death, though seemingly a defeat, became the means of salvation and life for all who believe. Just as the dead man found life in touching what remained of Elisha, we find life in touching the finished work of Christ. It's a powerful illustration of how God can bring life out of what appears to be the end, a precursor to the ultimate life-giving power of Christ's sacrifice.

"Who Takes Away the Sin of the World" - A Radical Removal

This phrase reveals the unparalleled nature of Jesus' mission.

"Takes Away" (Greek: αἴρων - airōn): This is the present active participle of the verb airō (αἴρω), which has a rich semantic range:

To lift up, to carry: As in carrying a burden. Jesus literally carries the weight of our sin (Isaiah 53:12 - "and he bare the sin of many").
To take up, to take away: As in removing something completely. This is crucial. Unlike the Old Covenant sacrifices that covered sin (Hebrew: kaphar - כָּפַר, to cover, atone), Jesus removes it. Imagine a stain that's merely covered up versus one that's completely eradicated.
To bear: To endure or suffer the consequences of something. Jesus bore the penalty for our sin on the cross (1 Peter 2:24 - "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree...").

The continuous action implied by the present participle (airōn) suggests an ongoing effect of His singular act – a perpetual removal of sin's power and guilt for all who believe.

So, then what is “sin”?

"Sin" (Greek: ἁμαρτία - hamartia): This term fundamentally means "missing the mark." It's not just individual wrongdoings, but the inherent human condition of rebellion against God, our falling short of His perfect standard. It encompasses our nature, our thoughts, our words, and our deeds that are contrary to God's will.

Romans 3:23 (KJV): "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
Romans 6:23 (KJV): "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Sin is the barrier between humanity and a holy God, leading to spiritual death and separation. It's the inherent flaw that prevents us from being in right relationship with our Creator.

Yet, hamartia is also the opposite state of metamorphoō - to have no form (see this important post).

The word for no form is analogous to the Greek word hamartia, which is generally translated in our Bibles as sin (also meaning to be without a share, to miss the mark, to be mistaken, to wander from the path, etc.).

The origin of the word hamartia comes from the root Greek word meros that means part, assignment, destiny, allotment. Adding the prefix ha to the word meros turns the word into the negative form. Thus, hameros or hamartia means to loose your original form or to be without part.

"The World" (Greek: κόσμος - kosmos): This signifies the entire created order, particularly humanity in its fallen state. John's declaration is not limited to Israel but extends to all people, everywhere, throughout time. It speaks to the universal problem of sin and the universal scope of God's solution.

John 3:16 (KJV): "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." This verse beautifully underscores the universal reach of God's love and the salvation offered through Christ.

The Problem is Our Understanding of Sin: A Condition, Not Just an Action

Many Christians (and non-Christians alike) still struggle with the issue of sin. The problem is that we've often been taught that sin is primarily a verb—an action we commit or fail to commit. While actions are certainly involved, this understanding misses the deeper truth.

In contrast, the Greek word used in the New Testament is much more explicit, often using "sin" as a noun. Sin is a condition rather than merely an action.

Sin is a condition, a sickness, a state. The Greek word for sin is hamartia. It is a noun used more than 200 times in the New Testament. The word denotes a condition whereby the person is in error, misses the mark, is without a share, or takes the wrong path. It is used mainly in singular form, referring to that specific condition of mankind. Even the Hebrew word ḥaṭṭā'āṯ talks about a condition of missing the mark.

Hamartia comes from a Greek root word hamartanō, which is the verb, with the same meaning but only used 48 times throughout the New Testament where people referred to their own sinning and trespassing (also Romans 6:15). This distinction is vital: we commit sins (plural, actions) because we are in a state of sin (singular, condition).

This deeper understanding of hamartia aligns perfectly with its etymological roots. The Finished Work of Christ: Sin's Ultimate Defeat and Our New Condition

John's declaration points directly to the cross – the epicenter of God's grace and the locus of Christ's finished work. Jesus, as the perfect, unblemished Lamb, offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice, fulfilling and superseding all the Old Covenant types.

His sacrifice was once for all. It was not a temporary covering, but a permanent removal.

Hebrews 7:27 (KJV): "Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself."
Hebrews 9:26 (KJV): "For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself."
Hebrews 10:10 (KJV): "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."
Hebrews 10:14 (KJV): "For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." These verses emphasize the singular, complete, and eternally effective nature of Christ's sacrifice. There's no need for repeated offerings because the payment was complete.

The shedding of His innocent blood, the Lamb's blood, was the perfect atonement, satisfying divine justice and reconciling humanity to God.

Hebrews 9:22 (KJV): "And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission."
1 Peter 1:18-19 (KJV): "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:" His blood is precious because it alone could pay the infinite price for infinite sin.

Through this finished work, the old covenant of law and sacrifice was replaced by a new testament of grace and forgiveness.

2 Corinthians 5:19 (KJV): "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."
2 Corinthians 3:18 is the exact opposite of our hamartia, saying we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. The Greek word used for transformed or change here, is metamorphoō and it means to obtain form, to take on another form. It is to take on the original form, our original design we had even before creation was. Jesus manifested to His own to remind and renew our form. The word metamorphoō is used in this context in only four occasions in the whole of the Bible, twice in the gospels when Jesus was transformed on the mount of transfiguration, once here in 2 Cor 3:18 to explain our glorious position looking into our perfect Mirror, and once when Paul said in Romans 12:2 that we should not conform to this world but rather be transformed (metamorphoō) by the renewing of our minds.
Jeremiah 31:34 (KJV): "And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." This prophetic passage, fulfilled in Christ, speaks of a radical, internal transformation.

The finished work of Christ is a triumphant victory over sin and death, offering freedom to all who believe.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 (KJV): "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." This declaration celebrates the ultimate defeat of death through Christ's resurrection.

The Beautiful Exchange: From Formlessness to Glorious Form

Yet, the Good News is... "the Lamb of God, taketh away the sin [formlessness and hamartia] of the world." (John 1:29).

Isaiah 53:2 describes Jesus on the cross, taking on our formlessness, as that "he hath no form nor comeliness;... no beauty that we should desire him." In this profound act, He took upon Himself the very state of hamartia – our disconnection, our being "without part," our loss of original form.

In the beautiful exchange (metamorphoō) on the cross, He took on our form(lessness) to enable us to take on His perfect form, to stand before God without blemish, without fault, speck or wrinkle... rather flawless - just as per our original design. This is the essence of God's grace: a complete, unmerited transformation.

Our New Condition: Righteousness and Life in Christ

With this background of Christ's finished work and the true nature of sin as a condition, let's now consider Paul's powerful encouragement to believers, particularly in Romans 6, and align it with the glorious transformation we experience.

Notice that Romans 6 starts with the words "What shall we say then?" The operative word here is "then," just like the word "therefore" at the beginning of chapter five. It tells you that the conclusion made is derived from what had been discussed beforehand.

Paul was explaining how believers are justified and in peace with God through Jesus (Romans 5:1 - "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:"). He was explaining that following the Law could not achieve this. And, most importantly, that we have been made the righteousness of God, imputed upon the believer (Romans 4:24 - "But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;" and preceding verses).

So, then what about sin? Because we have obtained this condition (position) of righteousness and have been justified before God forever, our condition of sin is no longer valid. It had been taken away by the Blood of the Lamb.

Romans 6:1-15 (KJV) - What shall we say then about sin?

"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid."

No. Our condition has changed. Because our previous condition has been completely taken away, we shall no longer live (stay, reason and regard ourselves) from a position of constantly missing the mark or formlessness. Hamartia is buried, and we walk in newness (verse 4) because of the resurrection of Jesus and live in newness of life (Jesus). (Note the words translated here as "should walk" can be much more accurately translated just as "walk" or even "live").

We Are Changed: The Miracle of Metamorphosis

This radical change in our condition is a divine transformation. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says that "we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."

The very moment we receive like a child, not beholding and forever considering the tree we once ate from, this tree-of-the-knowledge-of-good-and-evil (the Law), but instead beholding the tree of life, His Grace only... the veil is taken away so that we can see that we are miraculously transformed.

How? From Glory to Glory!

From a previous state that could not last into a state of everlasting Glory in the Beloved Son of God, we are transformed (changed, metamorphoō-ed) into the very image of Jesus. We look into a mirror (glass), Him (the Perfect Law of Liberty - James 1:25), and see ourselves! We see our original design and purpose! Oh, glory!

Transformation? metamorphoō

The Greek word used for transformed or changed here, is metamorphoō, and it means to obtain form, to take on another form.

It is to take on the original form, our original design we had even before creation. Jesus manifested to His own to remind us of this position.

Our Part? Just Receive!

In all this we had no part in the work of salvation. And the only part we could ever have, is to receive.

Paul says it beautifully. Behold!

How do I do that?

Behold - look attentively!

The thing about Grace is that you can add nothing to it. As soon as you do, it becomes something else. Adding to it even gives it another name, because it then is no longer free and becomes attained through work. Grace is God's unmerited favor. It is given freely. It can in no way be earned. It is an absolute free gift of which the receiver has and never will have any contribution. All he does... is receive!

Lambanō

The Greek word for receive is lambanō, a most wonderful word with a wonderful word-picture (see this post). It depicts to open one's hands, to take hold, to pull the Gift real close, to embrace It, to seize It and not let go. To attain and make your own!

Paul so eloquently elaborates on this: "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:9-16, KJV)

All we do is receive! That is our part. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" (John 1:12, KJV).

When we receive we are transformed (metamorphoō) "by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (Romans 12:2, KJV).

Because of Jesus, we are no longer defined by our sin condition. We are now defined by His righteousness imputed onto us. This understanding comes as we renew our minds to think as He thinks and transforms how we view ourselves and how we live. We don't strive to overcome sin to earn God's favor; instead, we live righteously because we are favored by God and have been freed from sin's dominion. This freedom is not a license to sin, but a license for right living as a co-heir in Christ, empowered, renewed, sanctified, in glorified form, reflecting the image of Christ.

Wholeness and Healing Inheritance

Have you ever considered the meticulous precision of God's Word? It's far more than a collection of stories or laws; it's a divinely inspired blueprint, a living revelation. Nothing within its sacred pages is there merely to fill space or for an insignificant reason. Every single word and letter, every sentence and sequence, is purposefully placed in its appropriate and appointed spot to unveil Yah'shua (Jesus), our Christ, and to give Him glory. He is the Living Word. As Jesus Himself declared in John 5:39 (KJV), "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." And after His resurrection, He opened the understanding of His disciples: "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." (Luke 24:27, KJV). HalleluYAH!

This divine precision extends even to the sequence of God's words when He speaks of blessings. Have you noticed it?

In the Old Covenant, when God refers to material abundance, particularly that which we consume (receive), it's almost always presented in a specific, consistent order:

First: Wheat (Bread, Barley, Corn, Grain) Secondly: Wine (Vineyard, Grapes, Vine) Thirdly: Oil (Dew, Olive Oil)

We see this pattern repeated throughout the Old Covenant (Gen 27:37, Deu 33:28, Hos 2:8, Joe 2:19, Neh 5:11, Jer 31:12, Hag 1:11, Neh 10:39, etc.). While sometimes the oil is mentioned first, there's always a reason for that, too, hinting at a deeper prophetic significance.

But why this specific sequence? And what profound truth does it reveal about our Christ and His finished work?

Melchizedek: The First Unveiling of the Covenant Provisions

The sequence is first introduced to us in a pivotal moment in Genesis 14:18 (KJV): "And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God."

Here, it's Melchizedek, a mysterious figure, who brings bread and wine to Abram. Who is Melchizedek? His name, correctly translated, means "King of Righteousness." He is also King of Salem, which means "King of Peace." He appears without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, made like the Son of God (Hebrews 7:1-3, KJV). He is a profound type and foreshadowing of (and even is) Yah'shua (Jesus)!

Who is the King of Righteousness by Whose death we became the very righteousness of God? Jesus, of course! It is He, our eternal High Priest after the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17, KJV: "For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."), who brings forth the ultimate Bread (His body) and Wine (His blood)!

Let's break down the significance of each element:

1. Bread: Nourishment, Strength, and Healing (Yah'shua's Body)

In Hebrew, "bread" can be lechem (lechem), meaning "food for man, to nurture and build," or dâgân (dagan), referring to "increase, become stronger." This beautifully references and prophesies the body of Yah'shua (Jesus).

His body was not only food for our spiritual sustenance but was crushed for our complete healing. Every stripe, every bruise, every wound He bore was for our wholeness – physical, emotional, and spiritual. As Isaiah 53:5 (KJV) powerfully declares, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." And 1 Peter 2:24 (KJV) confirms, "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." Jesus is indeed the "Bread of Life" (John 6:35, KJV: "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger..."), providing all we need for healing, strength, nourishment, and total restoration.

2. Wine: Redemption, Sanctification, and the New Covenant (Yah'shua's Blood)

Wine should be afforded equal attention with a little more focus on its variations, since the Hebrew has several words for wine, each descriptive of another kind. Let's look at three of them, highlighting the specific "wine" of the New Testament:

yayin (yayin) - fermented or intoxicating wine. From an unused root meaning to effervesce; wine (as fermented); by implication intoxication: - banqueting, wine, wine [-bibber]. Gen 9:21 (KJV): "And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent." This speaks of the fermented, corruptible nature.
shêkâr (shekar) - an intoxicant, that is, intensely alcoholic liquor: - strong drink, drunkard, strong wine usually mixed with other substances. Jdg 13:4 (KJV): "Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing." This denotes a potent, often mixed, drink indicative of total rejection and resentment.
tı̂yrôsh (tirosh) - in the sense of expulsion (squeezed); must or fresh grape juice (as just squeezed out); (new, sweet) wine. Gen 27:28 (KJV): "Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine."

The wine (tı̂yrôsh) refers prophetically to the freshly squeezed, uncorrupted blood of Yah'shua on the cross that was spilled for our redemption. This pure, vibrant blood is the very seal on the New Testament (Covenant) that proclaims our righteousness and eternally sanctifies us.

This is precisely why Yah'shua says in Mat 9:17 (KJV): "Neither do men put new wine into old bottles." The Gospel of Grace (new wine) cannot be placed or mixed with the old covenant (old bottles – the law, which Hebrews 8:13 (KJV) says, "In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away"). The New Wine of Christ's pure, perfect blood and the Covenant it established and sealed up for us is so powerful, so transformative, that it simply cannot coexist or ferment within the brittle, rigid confines of the Old Covenant system of law and human effort. It would burst it, spoiling everything.

3. Oil: Anointing, Abundance, and the Holy Spirit (Our Blessing in Yah'shua)

Oil is yitshâr (yitshar) referring to oil: (as producing light); anointing; anointed, oil. Or shemen (shemen) richness: - anointing, fat, fruitfulness, oil, ointment, olive, to make shine. 2Ch 32:28 (KJV) says: "Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks."

Oil speaks powerfully of our blessings because of Yah'shua. It refers to a certain type of Yah'shua – the son-of-promise, Isaac (yitschâq). Notice the beautiful resemblance in the Hebrew with yitshâr (oil) and yitschâq (Isaac)! Isaac, the son of promise, was a miracle child, a foreshadowing of the blessing that comes not through human effort, but through divine promise and the Spirit.

Indeed, oil speaks about the Holy Spirit, the "Latter Rain." The precious Gift from heaven, poured out upon us as a direct result of Christ's finished work! The Holy Spirit brings to our remembrance all that the Former Rain (Yah'shua) has taught us (John 14:26, KJV: "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.") and even shows us things to come (John 16:13, KJV: "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth... and he will shew you things to come."). It refers to a very Special Anointing, the Spirit of Power, the very Breath of God blown into us, empowering us to live a supernatural life (Acts 1:8, KJV: "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you..."). The Spirit of Jesus. HalleluYAH!

What is all this talk about Rain? God's Unfailing Teachers

All along, we might have thought that this talk about "rain" was merely a weather report, speaking only to farmers. But our Abba is not a God who saves and then leaves you to your own devices, saying, "just hang on and wait for Me until one day I return again." That would be incredibly unfair for Someone who says that He would never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5, KJV).

Father God, in His profound love and provision, says in Joel 2:23-24 (KJV): "Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil."

This passage reveals a divine appointment and a continuous supply!

The Former and Latter Rain: God's Appointed Teachers

The Hebrew word used in Joel 2:23 for Former Rain is מוֹרֶה (môreh), which is the same word used for Teacher! And the Hebrew word used in Joel 2:23 for moderately is צְדָקָה (tsedâqâh), meaning righteousness!

But hang on! Jesus, our ultimate Teacher, is famously called "the Lord our Righteousness" in Jeremiah 23:6 (KJV). It is because of Him that we have been clothed with a cloak of Righteousness (Isa 61:10)!

Are we looking at a prophecy here? Absolutely! Once again, prophecies are fulfilled completely and perfectly in Christ.

Jesus is the Former Rain (Teacher)! He was born from above exactly as prophesied, entering humanity during the month of Tishri (September/October), which is the time of the former rain in Israel! He laid the foundation, sowed the seed, and initiated the New Covenant (Testament).
The Holy Spirit is the Latter Rain (Teacher)! Jesus, in John 14 and 16, promised He would not leave us as orphans (John 14:18, KJV). The Holy Spirit was poured out, born from above, during the month of Nisan (March/April), the time of the latter rain in Israel, which corresponds to Pentecost (Shavu'ot), exactly as promised by Jesus!

Even in the Symbols, a Prophetic Dance

The Former Rain (Jesus) is powerfully symbolized by the Wheat and the Wine! He is the bread of life and new covenant in His blood. The Latter Rain (Holy Spirit) is perfectly symbolized by the Oil! He is the anointing, the power, the Spirit of God poured out upon us.

We Are Well Prepared: The Promise of the Comforter

Jesus prepared His disciples (and us!) to receive the Latter Rain when He said:

"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." (Joh 14:16-17, KJV)

When He explained about "Another Comforter," He was talking about Someone exactly like Him in all respects – His Spirit of Truth! This isn't a secondary or lesser gift, but a continuation of His presence.

Jesus didn't just come, heal some people, do a few miracles, cast out a few demons, announce the Good News, and then leave us to fend for ourselves. No!

He came to reconcile the whole world unto Himself (2 Corinthians 5:19, KJV: "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself..."), to announce the time of grace and truth, and to abide and live right inside whoever chooses for Him to do so!

"...the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (Joh 14:26, KJV)

He is the second (but same in nature) Teacher!

"...when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:" (Joh 15:26, KJV)

He is the Latter Rain! Indeed, Jesus Himself is both the Former Rain and the Latter Rain – the beginning and the continuation of God's perfect provision for us through His finished work!

Discerning the Body: The Fulness of Our Inheritance in Communion

Now, with this profound understanding of bread, wine, and oil, and the two Teachers (rains), let's contemplate again 1 Corinthians 11:23-30, a passage often misunderstood and used to bring fear and condemnation, rather than revelation and healing:

"For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily [not distinguishing the body of Yah'shua from His blood], shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

But let a man examine himself [see that you are righteous], and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily [not distinguishing the body of Yah'shua from His blood], eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep."

The key to understanding "eating and drinking unworthily" and "not discerning the Lord's body" lies in the Greek word for "discerning" or "distinguishing," which is διακρίνω (diakrinō). It doesn't mean judging your own moral worthiness or looking for sin. It means to separate, discriminate, or rightly judge the true meaning and purpose of Christ's body and blood. An unworthy manner would be to just take both without discerning what each is about.

When we partake of communion, we are to discern (διακρίνω) the profound truth that:

The bread represents Jesus' body, broken for our complete healing and wholeness. When we fail to distinguish this vital truth – believing that sickness is God's will or that healing is not for today – we partake "unworthily" by neglecting the full provision of His body.
The cup represents the New Covenant in His blood, which has made us righteous and holy. When we fail to distinguish this truth – believing we are still under condemnation or need to earn God's forgiveness and favor – we partake "unworthily" by not recognizing our perfect standing in Him.

Therefore, the self-examination Paul calls for ("But let a man examine himself") is not to seek out sin, but to "examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves." (2 Corinthians 13:5, KJV). It's to examine whether you truly believe and discern the finished work of Christ: that His body provided healing and His blood provided perfect righteousness.

When believers fail to discern (διακρίνω) the comprehensive provision of Christ's body – specifically for healing and health – then "for this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep" (meaning premature physical death or lack of vibrant life (sickness), not spiritual damnation for believers). It's a consequence of unbelief, not unworthiness of self.

We are utterly blessed, made righteous, healed, and empowered by the finished work of Christ! As we partake of the bread and the cup, may our hearts be filled with discernment, believing and appropriating every glorious provision secured by our Savior, led by the continuous teaching of the Holy Spirit, our Latter Rain.

Perfect Liberty

"But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." (James 1:25, KJV). This profound declaration from the Apostle James introduces a concept that, at first glance, might seem paradoxical: one "perfect law" that brings "liberty." How can the very idea of 'law,' which often conjures images of restriction, rules, and bondage, be synonymous with 'perfect' and 'liberty'?

The answer, deeply rooted in the majestic truth of Christ's finished work, is a cornerstone of the boundless, super-abundant grace—what some aptly term "Hyper-Grace"—that flows to every believer.

This perfect law is not a set of rigid external regulations from which we strive to earn favour. Instead, it is a present reality, perfectly fulfilled and now made accessible to us through the complete and sufficient work of Jesus Christ on the cross. It ushers us into a divine freedom that liberates us from the treadmill of performance and empowers genuine, Spirit-led, victorious living, enabling us to appropriate our dominion authority in Christ.

Addressing the "Troublesome" James: Context is King

For many who teach from a legalistic perspective, the words of James have historically posed a significant challenge. Some of the early 'church fathers' even debated the inclusion of James's epistle in the Biblical canon, precisely because its emphasis on "works" seemed to contradict Paul's clear teaching on salvation by grace through faith alone. This misunderstanding often stems from a corrupt translation of certain concepts or, more often, an isolation of scripture outside its proper context.

Let us look closely at a particular passage in James that often causes confusion, James 1:21-27 (KJV):

"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

James is making a profound point here, entirely consistent with the finished work of Christ. The key to understanding this passage lies in recognizing the context of what James is truly saying.

The Engrafted Word: Jesus Incubated Within

The central concept in James 1:21 is the "engrafted word" (ἔμφυτος λόγος, emphutos logos). This isn't just any word; it is the en-grafted, the incubated Word. The word "incubate" here means to attend to something, to nurture it, to keep it warm and secure, bringing it to full hatching or manifestation.

Jesus is the Word. He is the logos made flesh (John 1:1, 14), the Word born from above. He is the Word that we are to en-craft (incubate) in every and any situation. He is the Word we should ponder, nurture, and allow to dwell richly within us all day long. This deep, continuous engagement with Jesus, the living Word, enables His truth to supersede our doubt and unbelief, causing life, goodness, and prosperity to spring forth from Him within us.

For instance, the Word (Jesus) declares truths about our identity:

You are forever free.
You are holy and blameless.
You are sanctified and washed.
You are healed and free of sickness.
You are prosperous and blessed and rich.

It is His Word of truth that we should incubate, letting it become the dominant reality in our hearts and minds. Conversely, to "lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness" means to lay aside the corruption of this world—the lies and deceptions that tell us we are sinful, poor, sick, ugly, fat, hopeless, frail, despised, or unworthy. We must lay aside everything contrary to the Word, which is Jesus.

The Law Before Christ: A Schoolmaster to Deliverance

To truly appreciate the "perfect law of liberty," we must first understand the purpose and limitations of the Old Covenant law, often referred to as the Mosaic Law. This law, given through Moses, was undeniably perfect in its reflection of God's holy and righteous character. It set forth divine standards for human conduct and revealed God's unwavering moral purity.

However, its primary purpose was not to provide salvation or justification for humanity. As Romans 3:20 (KJV) states, "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin." The law (νόμος, nomos) revealed sin; it acted as a telltale mirror, exposing our inherent inability to perfectly keep God's commands. It condemned because no human could perfectly adhere to its demands. Galatians 3:24 (KJV) beautifully summarises its function: "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith." It revealed our desperate need for a Saviour, acting as a custodian until Christ came. It could demand, but it could not deliver. It could highlight our bondage, but it could not provide liberty.

Christ: The Consummation of the Law

The advent and finished work of Jesus Christ marked a monumental shift in humanity's relationship with the law. Jesus Himself declared in Matthew 5:17 (KJV), "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." Christ did not abolish the law in the sense of negating its divine truth or moral authority. Instead, He perfectly satisfied every single one of its demands, living a sinless life, fulfilling all its righteous requirements.

His ultimate act of fulfilling the law occurred on the cross. There, He not only took upon Himself the penalty for our transgressions and sins (missing the mark and being formless), but also redeemed us from the law's curse. Galatians 3:13 (KJV) powerfully declares, "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree." By becoming our substitute, He bore the condemnation the law demanded for sin. Thus, Romans 10:4 (KJV) triumphantly states, "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth." The word "end" here is τέλος (telos, see previous post), meaning not merely termination, but 'purpose,' 'goal,' or 'consummation.' Christ is the consummation and fulfilment of the law, rendering it no longer necessary as a means to achieve righteousness or to stand before God. We are no longer under the letter that kills, but under the Spirit that gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6). This completed work is the very foundation of the "perfect law of liberty."

The Perfect Law of Liberty: A Person, Jesus!

This brings us back to James 1:25: "But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." And also James 2:12: "So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty."

The profound truth is this: The PERFECT LAW OF LIBERTY (PLL) (see my post on PLL here) is not a set of rules; it is a Person – Jesus Himself! He is Mr. Freedom. There is only one law that brings complete liberty, and His Name is Jesus!

"Perfect" (τέλειος, teleios): This word signifies 'complete,' 'mature,' 'brought to its end,' or 'fully accomplished.' This law is perfect because it is fully accomplished in Christ. It does not require our imperfect works to supplement it. It is whole, lacking nothing, and perfectly effective in bringing salvation and transformation. It is the the word uttered by Jesus on the cross. It is the finished work of Jesus perfectly applied to us.
"Law" (νόμος, nomos): In this context, nomos does not refer to the Mosaic Law. Instead, it refers to a governing principle or power. It is the "law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2, KJV: "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ."), or more accurately, the "law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:2, KJV: "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."). This is an internal law, written not on tablets of stone, but on the hearts of believers by the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 8:10). It is the very life and nature of Christ operating within us, guiding us, empowering us.
"Liberty" (ἐλευθερία, eleutheria): This is the glorious outcome of this Perfect Law. It signifies true freedom! It is freedom from the dominion of sin (Romans 6:14), freedom from the condemnation of the law (Romans 8:1), freedom from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13), and freedom from the exhausting treadmill of human effort and performance for acceptance. But it is not just freedom from; it is freedom to. Freedom to love God and others genuinely, to serve Him out of gratitude, to follow His promptings through Spirit-empowerment, and to walk in the dominion He has given us. This liberty is entirely secured by Christ's finished work, a gift of His boundless grace.

The Perfect Law of Liberty is not the Mosaic Law plus any other prerequisite, rule, or regulation. It (He) is perfect onto Itself. It is perfect in the most complete sense... IT IS JESUS!

"Doers of the Word": Poets of Jesus

James also tells us, "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." (James 1:22). The word for "doers" here is ποιητής (poiētēs), which can be translated as 'doers' or even 'poets.' This is a profound insight. As we incubate the Word (Jesus) within us, we are now to proceed as "poets of the Word," not poets of the law and commandments. This means we should appropriate and apply what the Word (Jesus) says about us and our circumstances. We are to manifest the truth of who we are in Christ so that we do not forget the kind of victorious person we have become in Jesus.

This is not a "work" in the sense of earning salvation; it is our persuasion—our firm conviction and faith—manifesting itself. It is the word of our testimony and intertwined with the Blood of the Lamb (Revelation 12:11, KJV). This active appropriation and declaration of Christ's finished work brings about the security and serenity of perfect freedom in Him. It is easy, it is complete, because it is finished!

Responsibility in Liberty: Bridling the Tongue from Religion

Our freedom in Christ comes with responsibility, not as a burden, but as a privilege born of our new nature. James continues, "If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain." (James 1:26). For this reason, James says we bridle our tongues. We do not give way to the devil and his devices—his lies and deceptions that speak against us or against the finished work of Christ. Instead, agreeing with Jesus and the truth of His Word, we speak Life and Truth. This is a practical demonstration of our liberty and dominion.

James closes chapter 1 with a summary that is often perverted into a law by those who preach works-based religion: "Pure religion and undefiled before יהוה and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27).

Taken out of context, this last verse can seem problematic to the max, implying that our "doing good works" earns us favour.

However, in the context of the "Perfect Law of Liberty," we see James summarizing the practical outflow of incubating Jesus, the Word, and being a "poet" of His finished work:

"To visit" (do, to poet) the fatherless: Those who do not know that they have a loving Father who gave His Son so that we may be the appropriators of the Perfect Law of Liberty.
And the widows: Those who do not know that they have a loving Husband (Jesus) who is all-victorious and has done everything for them to be free.
And "to keep himself unspotted from the world": To keep ourselves unspotted from the lies and deceptions of the world that speak against the finished Work of Christ and our identity in Him.

If we "do" this—if we live as poets of Jesus, speaking His truth and demonstrating His finished work—we are effectively bringing the Gospel of the Perfect Law of Liberty to a world that desperately needs it.

So, Rest in the One Word, Jesus

The "perfect law of liberty" is the joyful crescendo of the Gospel. It is the ultimate expression of love perfected in us, leading to complete boldness in our walk and our rightful place of dominion. It calls us to live from our true identity, fulfilled and perfected by Christ’s finished work. It is an invitation to shed the weight of self-condemnation and religious human effort, and instead, boldly walk in the righteousness, holiness, victory, belovedness, and dominion authority that is already ours in Him.

As we embrace this truth, we live from this reality, and experience the boundless freedom and inherent dominion that comes from knowing who we truly are, as He is, in this world.

Isn't it wonderful that the whole of God's Word is beautifully scripted in context?

And isn't it beautiful that the context of the Word is One and One only—Jesus Christ, the Perfect Law of Liberty!

Wholeness and Healing the Inheritance for those Called

God the Healer: Receiving Wholeness Through Christ's Finished Work for the Ekklēsia

In the vast tapestry of divine revelation, one of the most comforting and profound truths is that God is our Healer. From the earliest covenants to the glorious finished work of Christ, the Lord consistently reveals Himself as the one who restores, makes whole, and delivers from sickness and infirmity. This isn't a peripheral aspect of His character, but a central declaration of His benevolent heart towards humanity. Understanding God as our Healer is not merely an intellectual exercise; it is an invitation for His beloved Ekklēsia—the called of God—to experience His boundless compassion and the complete provision made for us in Jesus Christ.

Jehovah Rapha: The Lord Who Heals

The first explicit revelation of God as a Healer in the Bible comes in the wilderness, after the Israelites grumbled about bitter water. God performed a miracle, turning the bitter water sweet, and then declared: "If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee." (Exodus 15:26, KJV).

Here, God identifies Himself with a powerful name: Jehovah Rapha. The Hebrew word for "that healeth thee" is רָפָא (rapha’). This verb means to "mend, cure, or heal." It's used not only for physical healing (e.g., healing a wound or a sick person) but also for restoring broken relationships, repairing spiritual backsliding, and even mending damaged land or bitter water. It signifies a complete restoration, making whole what was broken. From this foundational declaration, we learn that healing is intrinsically linked to God's character and nature and His desire for the well-being of His people – specifically, those He calls out to Himself.

This comprehensive meaning of Rapha also points to a profound truth: all healing, in whatever form it manifests, ultimately originates from God. Whether it be through the miraculous touch of the Holy Spirit, the skillful hand of a surgeon, the efficacy of medicine, or the remarkable restorative power of nature itself, every instance of healing finds its ultimate source in the Creator and Sustainer of life. God is the one who imbues the body with its incredible capacity to recover, who inspires scientific discovery, and who orchestrates circumstances for restoration. There is no true healing apart from His divine design and power.

In stark, direct contrast to the character of Jehovah Rapha stands the character of the destroyer as pointed out in John 10:10 “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I (Jesus) am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

Interestingly, many of the translations of the Bible fail us when it comes to Exodus 15:26, for example. In the original text God never says "which I have brought upon the Egyptians". The Hebrew word used here is merely śûm, meaning "appointed" without the personal pronoun. YHVH never says that He brought the sickness. It is not in His character.

Jesus is the Embodiment of God's Healing Will

Centuries later, Jehovah Rapha’s divine nature was perfectly embodied in Jesus Christ. His earthly ministry was a continuous, vibrant demonstration of God's will to heal, which is good news (or bad depending on how you look at it) to those who believe that God permitted sickness to come over them. Not once did Jesus tell someone that they need to get some illness first so that they get an appreciation of who He is. He didn't just teach about healing; He consistently performed it, and powerfully so. The Gospels are replete with accounts of His healing touch, demonstrating the Father's heart for His soon-to-be-called Ekklēsia:

"And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people." (Matthew 4:23, KJV).

"And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them all." (Matthew 12:15, KJV).

"Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them." (Luke 4:40, KJV).

Notice the confirming emphasis: Jesus healed all. He never refused anyone who came to Him for healing, nor did He ever suggest that sickness was God's direct will for them. Every healing was a testament to God's compassionate heart and His desire for wholeness, laying the groundwork for the beneficiaries of His finished work—the called of God.

Jesus' miracles were not merely acts of power; they were living parables and testament to the nature of God, revealing the Kingdom of God and the divine intention to conquer all the destructive effects of sin, including sickness.

The Finished Work of Christ: The Foundation for Our Healing

While Jesus' earthly ministry demonstrated God's will and power to heal, it was His ultimate sacrifice on the cross—His finished work—that secured our healing as a complete, redemptive package for the Ekklēsia.

The prophet Isaiah, hundreds of years before Christ, foretold this profound truth:

"Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:4-5, KJV).

Let's look closer at this incredible prophecy. The Hebrew word for "griefs" is חֳלִי (choli), meaning "sickness, disease, anxiety." The word for "sorrows" is מַכְאֹב (mak’ob), meaning "pain, suffering." So, Jesus literally bore our sicknesses and carried our pains.

Even more striking is the phrase "with his stripes we are healed." The Hebrew word for "bruised" in verse 5 is דָּכָא (daka’), which means to "crush or break in pieces." This speaks of a violent, shattering affliction.

The word for "stripes" is חַבּוּרָה (chabbûrâh), meaning a "stripe, bruise, or wound." This refers to the lacerations left by scourging. Isaiah clearly links Christ's physical suffering directly to our healing.

This prophetic truth is reaffirmed in the New Testament by Peter: "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." (1 Peter 2:24, KJV). Peter uses the Greek word μώλωψ (molops) for "stripes," referring to a bruise or weal, specifically from a blow. The key phrase is "ye were healed" – the Greek here is ἰάομαι (iaomai), which refers explicitly to physical healing and restoration.

This is the very essence of the finished work of Christ: on the cross, Jesus dealt comprehensively with both sin and sickness. Just as our salvation from sin is a completed work, received by faith, so too is our healing. Indeed, healing is not merely a gracious gift; it forms a tangible part of the divine inheritance secured for us, the called of God, through His precious blood and perfect sacrifice. It's not something we, the Ekklēsia, need to earn or beg for based on our performance; it is our rightful portion in Him. His scourging was for our physical ailments; the shedding of His blood and crucifixion, for our sins. Both are part of the same redemptive act, making us, the called of God, the direct beneficiaries of His complete provision.

Healing in the Ekklēsia: Receiving His Provision

After Jesus' ascension, the power to heal continued through His disciples and the early Ekklēsia, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Peter, filled with the Spirit, declared to the lame man at the temple gate, "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." (Acts 3:6, KJV). And the man was instantly healed! Peter later affirmed, "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." (Acts 10:38, KJV).

God does not change and this dominion power is still ours today, a direct consequence of Christ's finished work, and it flows through the called of God. James instructs the Ekklēsia on how to access this provision: "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the Ekklēsia; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." (James 5:14-15, KJV).

The Greek word for "sick" here is ἀσθενέω (astheneo), meaning to be "weak, sick, feeble." The word for "anointing" with oil is ἀλείφω (aleipho), which is a common, non-sacred anointing, implying a simple act of care and faith, not a magical ritual. The emphasis is on "the prayer of faith" that "shall save (sōzō) the sick." The Greek word σῴζω (sōzō) means to "save, preserve, heal, make whole." It encompasses both spiritual salvation and physical healing, reinforcing the holistic nature of God's redemption through Christ's finished work, of which the Ekklēsia are the rightful heirs. And why should they call on the elders? Simply to counter unbelief, permitting those who are more established in their faith appropriate it. Also see my post on fervent prayer.

Receiving Your Healing as the Ekklēsia

God's Word consistently affirms His will to heal, rooted in His nature and fully expressed through Jesus' ministry and ultimate sacrifice. Healing is not a hit-or-miss proposition based on our worthiness, but a divine provision available through faith in Christ's completed work, specifically for the called of God. We don't strive for it; we receive it.

Just as we received salvation by believing in what Jesus did on the cross, we receive healing by believing that "by His stripes we were healed." It is past tense, a done deal! Our part as the Ekklēsia is to trust, to stand on His promises, and to appropriate the healing that is already ours in Christ Jesus. For believers, this krisis points to the Judgment Seat of Christ (also known as the Bema Seat), mentioned in 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 (KJV): "Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire." It also leads us away from sin and into greater conformity to Christ. So, this krino extends to our dominion authority in the world. As 1 Corinthians 6:2-3 (KJV) boldly states, "Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels?" This isn't about human condemnation, but about discerning righteousness, exposing darkness, and operating with Christ's authority in the affairs of life. For Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen: The Message of Grace

Jesus uses a phrase that often causes confusion, if not condemnation, in the hearts of believers. In Matthew 20:16 and Matthew 22:14, He says, "...for many be called, but few chosen."

This phrase follows two of His most powerful parables: the parable of the workers in the vineyard who are all paid the same wage regardless of when they started, and the parable of the wedding feast where one guest is cast out for not wearing the proper garment.

Is this phrase a warning of exclusion, a looming threat that implies our salvation is conditional upon our performance? Or is it a profound revelation of God's unchanging nature and His redemptive plan?

Legalistic preachers often use this text to condemn their audience, preaching, "Get right with God or get left behind!" or "Repent, or you won't be chosen!" This mindset forces people into a law-abiding, Pharisee-like way of thinking. In doing so, they miss the very heart of the Gospel and risk causing believers to fall from grace by returning to a works-based system (Galatians 5:4).

So, what is the true meaning behind Jesus's words?

The Prophetic Shadow: Called and Chosen in 1 Samuel 16

Jesus was not introducing a new concept; He was quoting a prophetic word and action from the Old Covenant that beautifully reveals the Father’s heart. He was pointing to the story of God’s redemptive plan as revealed in 1 Samuel 16, where the words called and chosen are first used together in a significant way.

To understand Jesus’s meaning, we must first understand this prophetic action.

The Background

God sent the prophet Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel. The first king, Saul (whose name means "desired"), had failed to obey God completely. Samuel was sent to the house of Jesse (whose name means "I possess") to find the one God had chosen.

When Samuel arrived, he asked Jesse to bring forth all his sons so that he could identify the next king. As each son appeared, God spoke to Samuel, indicating whether this was the one or not.

The first time the words "called" and "chosen" appear together in the Bible is in 1 Samuel 16:8:

"Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this."

The rest of 1 Samuel 16 is a prophetic masterclass on the meaning of these words.

Jesse called all his sons before Samuel, one by one. After reviewing all of them, Samuel asked, "Are these all your sons?" Jesse replied that there was one more, the youngest, David, who was out in the field tending the sheep. Jesse had not even considered him to be a potential candidate.

When David appeared, God immediately declared, "This is he! The beloved is chosen."

Deeper Hebrew Word-Pictures

The significance of this story is made even clearer when we look at the Hebrew.

The Hebrew word for called is qâra' (קָרָא). It means "to proclaim" or "to summon." Its pictograph shows the "least person first," which prophetically points to God's love for the humble and overlooked. It is a universal, open invitation.

The Hebrew word for chosen is bâchar (בָּחַר). It means "to elect," "to choose," or "to decide." Its pictograph pictures "the house (of God) in man revealed." This is a stunning revelation: God's ultimate desire is to choose those who will house Him, to have a deep and intimate relationship with Him. This was man's original design before the Fall (Genesis 1:26).

This is a beautiful picture of grace! God's plan has always been to dwell within us, not to condemn us from a distance.

Let’s look at the names of Jesse's sons who were called but not chosen:

Eliab: "My father is God-like." He looked like a king but was rejected because God looks at the heart, not the outward appearance (1 Samuel 16:7). This represents human religion and self-righteousness.
Abinadab: "My father is willing." This shows a knowledge of a willing Father but not of an able, redemptive Father. This is a picture of man’s self-righteous works, which are insufficient.
Shammah: "Horror, waste, appalling." This name points to the false belief that all evil and adversity are from God, a mindset that distorts His character of love and goodness.

All those who came before David were insufficient. But then, Jesse called David ("beloved"), the youngest and least likely candidate. When David was brought in, God said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is the one!" (1 Samuel 16:12).

This is a prophetic shadow of Jesus.

Fulfilment of Grace

The Father looks at us through the lens of Jesus's finished work. When we are in Christ, we are clothed in His righteousness, without blemish or spot or wrinkle (Ephesians 5:27).

This brings us back to Jesus’s words.

In Matthew 20:16, "So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen," Jesus immediately cancels the law concept of earning our salvation. The workers who were called last, having done the least work, received the same full wage. This is a perfect picture of grace, not works. The "wage" is eternal life, which is not earned but given freely to all who respond to the call.

In the wedding parable in Matthew 22:14, Jesus again declares that "many are called." He explains that everyone was invited to the feast. However, one person was cast out for not wearing the appropriate wedding garment. The other guests were clothed by the King for the feast. This man, however, refused the King’s provision and tried to enter in his own clothes—his own righteousness. The garment for the feast is not something we earn; it is provided by the King. We are to be clothed in the righteousness of Christ, as Isaiah 61:10 declares: "...he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness."

This man was not condemned for being "unworthy." He was condemned for rejecting the King’s grace and trying to enter on his own terms.

Called and Chosen and Faithful

Prophetically, the wordplay in 1 Samuel sheds light on God’s redemptive plan, a plan perfectly executed by Jesus. So, who are the "called" and "chosen"? The Bible gives us the ultimate answer in the book of Revelation.

In Revelation 17:14, we find the full description of those who are with Jesus in His victory:

"...These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful."

Called: The universal invitation from God to all humanity.

Chosen: The Father's divine election, rooted in His eternal love and grace, perfectly fulfilled in Christ.

Faithful: Those who respond to the call and accept the Father's choice through faith in His Son, Jesus.

The good news is that the Father calls all, and He chooses all to be His own, to have an intimate relationship with Him. All we have to do is choose to receive Him in faith. We are not chosen based on our works but are chosen because we are beloved in Christ.

However, when understood biblically, "hyper-grace" simply points to the immeasurable, overflowing, and radical nature of God's favour given to us in Christ. It is God’s Gift from which we cannot subtract, nor add to make our salvation and position in Christ even better.

So, let's see. We know that Grace is God's unmerited, unearned favour. It's the divine kindness extended to humanity, not because of what we do, but because of who God is and what He has done for us. In the New Testament, the primary Greek word for grace is χάρις (charis). This word signifies God's benevolent disposition and the divine enablement that empowers believers. It is in Jesus Christ that we see Grace personified and perfectly demonstrated!

Hyper? A Biblical Super-Abundance

The prefix "hyper" (ὑπέρ, hyper) in Greek literally means "over, beyond, in behalf of, above measure." So, if we are to speak of "hyper-Grace" as grace that is "beyond measure" or "super-abundant," then it is not only scriptural but deeply reflective of God's character and the magnitude of His salvation in Christ.

Does Scripture actually say this kind of grace exists? Absolutely!

Paul, the apostle of grace, declares in Romans 5:20-21:

"Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace [χάρις, charis] did much more abound [ὑπερπερισσεύω, huperperisseuō]: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness [δικαιοσύνη, dikaiosynē] unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord."

The usual concern often raised is that people may interpret this super-abundance as a license to live carelessly (ἀνομία, anomia, lawlessness) and then they quote Jude 1:4: "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ."

But the context of this quote in Jude must be further looked into.

HyperGrace: A licence to Sin?

The anti-Grace preacher will almost always quote Jude The appeal in 1:4. And let me just add this-the newer translations of this verse (not direct translations) render it even more dubious. So, we’ll focus on the most direct English translation we can get, the KJV.

Jude 1:4 (Jude, likely the half-brother of Jesus) is saying to his readers that "ye should earnestly contend for the faith" (Jude 1:3). The immediate context is the infiltration of the early Christian community by dangerous false teachers that mixes up the truth with suggestions of their own making. The emphasis is exactly this - content for your faith, Jesus!

Jude, originally writing about the "common salvation," felt compelled to shift his focus to address this urgent threat. His short letter uses vivid Old Covenant and extra biblical examples to illustrate the severe judgment awaiting those who pervert God's truth, Jesus (Grace).

When Jude later on in his letter refers to “I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this” on Old Covenant examples, his aim is exactly to show that YHVH had always been the same, in spite of a global prevention of who He really is.

Let's break it down our verse above:

"For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation …"

"Certain men": Jude doesn't name them, but he describes their character and actions throughout the letter. These were internal threats, people who had "slipped in" or "crept in unnoticed" (the Greek is παρεισδύω, pareisdyō, meaning to "slip in stealthily" or "worm their way in"). This implies they were deceptive, not openly declaring their perverted teachings, but subtly influencing believers from within, not unlike what we have today.
"who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men": This suggests that their character and ultimate fate were decided by themselves outside of God’s Grace. It was predetermined standing against God's divine plan, likely referring to their subscription to Old Covenant prophecies, law propagation and rebellion against the finished work of Christ. Promoting the traditions, laws and prophecies of the Old Covenant, along with the denial of Christ’s finished work, their message was also one of divine judgment (e.g., the Israelites in the wilderness, fallen angels, Sodom and Gomorrah, mentioned later in Jude). Their message centered around the certainty of impending doom.

"ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ ..."

"Ungodly men": This highlights their fundamental nature and behavior as anti-God, wicked. They lacked the knowledge and reverence of who God is and what He did, and they lived in defiance of His Grace and character.
"turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness": This is a core accusation and a direct counter to the true understanding of grace as revealed through Christ and His finished work.

Grace (χάρις, charis): As discussed, this is God's unmerited favour. It is the basis of our salvation and our ability to live a new life in Christ.
"lasciviousness": The Greek word here is ἀσέλγεια (aselgeia), often translated as "licentiousness," "unbridled lust, excess, licentiousness, lasciviousness, wantonness, outrageousness, shamelessness, insolence sensuality," or "wantonness." It signifies a brazen, unbridled indulgence in immoral religious messages and acts, characterized by a lack of shame or moral restraint. Therefore, it is a total disregard of Grace Himself.
The Deception: These false teachers twisted the glorious truth of God's Grace, Jesus. Instead of understanding grace as that which rescues us from sin and empowers us to live righteously, they perverted the Gospel message and mixed it up with their own interpretations and additions.

From the perspective of Christ's finished work, His sacrifice on the cross does indeed provide complete forgiveness for all sin (past, present, and future) for those who believe. However, if we experience His Grace, we’ll realise that it is not a licence to sin (to miss the mark), the way that the mix-grace teacher promotes his anti-Grace message. Rather, it is a licence to live righteously (having had the mark hit for us). This forgiveness is not a bondage of sin-awareness but a liberation from sin's power. The finished work secures our justification and imputes Christ's righteousness to us, simultaneously initiating our consciousness of sanctification (being made holy) by the Holy Spirit. True grace, established by Christ's blood, leads to a transformed life, not a sin-awareness life to continue in (Romans 6:1-2: "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?").

"... denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ."

"denying … our Lord Jesus Christ": This is the second major charge. Their immoral doctrine was inextricably linked to a denial of Christ's authority.

Lord God (δεσπότης, despotēs): This word denotes a "master" or "absolute ruler," and even “a husband,”one who possesses supreme, unchallenged authority, particularly over those under him or her. It highlights Christ's ultimate ownership and control - all power in heaven and earth.
Lord (κύριος, kyrios): This is the most common New Testament term for "he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding" or “the possessor and disposer of authority.” In many contexts, especially when applied to Jesus, it carries the weight of the Old Covenant divine name YHWH, signifying His deity and absolute authority.
The Denial: The denial is a denial of the power and authority along with His absolute and complete accomplishment. To show this, those who slipped in deliberately and explicitly rejected Jesus, in bringing their own doctrine loosely aligned to Grace but favouring their own aselgeia.

Jude 1:4 is a powerful warning for those who are “called out from amongst” (ekklesia) to be aware of those who twist the glorious truth of God's grace, revealed through the finished work of Christ. Jude’s message exhorts us to stay true to the Gospel message without supplements, enhancers, flavourants, colourants, preservatives or any other artificial additives. It underscores that authentic faith in Christ's atoning sacrifice and leads not to lawlessness, but to a glorious rest in Him.

Back to Hyper-Grace

True biblical charis, especially in its hyper expression, always leads to holiness, not away from it. It's the very power that enables us to live for Christ. As Titus 2:11-12 says: "For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live focussed on the finished work of Jesus, sanctified and righteous in Him even if those who mix-up the Gospel with our own works slip in amongst us." It teaches, empowers, and transforms, all flowing from the finished work.

Paul also explicitly links this overwhelming grace to other spiritual realities:

"And the grace [χάρις, charis] of our Lord was exceeding abundant [ὑπερπλεονάζω, hyperpleonazō – another Greek word conveying super-abundance] with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus." (1 Timothy 1:14)

This isn't just a theological concept; it's a living reality for the believer. This exceeding abundance of grace is interwoven with the faith we receive to believe in Christ's finished work, and the love that pours into our hearts from God, empowering us to love Him and others.

Aren't you so overjoyed that you have received a cloak of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10)? This is not a righteousness earned by our own ἔργον (ergon - works), but a righteousness freely given through faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Aren't you so glad that you received favour and love and blessings...

... in what quality and quantities?

Beyond measure! Super abundantly! In hyper amounts and sizes!

This is the glorious reality of the New Covenant believer. The grace poured out through Jesus' finished work is not just enough; it's more than enough. It's an overflowing, conquering, transforming grace that secures our eternal life, empowers our daily walk, and establishes our perfect standing before God, all because of what Christ has definitively accomplished.
