[summary]

Todays, There are groups that make electronic disturbance : virus trojan horse, worm, etc. They called "Resistance". Why they do that? They want to protest and to resist for huge power in media technologies; like Microsoft, Apple.

They make electronic disturbance. For example, Virus is a cracker program. It infect the computer, and make computers to juck. One thing is trojan horse. It pretend ordinary software. But if It passes the security guard, It damage to system. Trojan horse is designed to break security or damage a system. Another thing is Worm. Worm does'nt give damage to system. But it hold the memory. It is first made by Robert Morris when he is 23 years old, (Now he is MIT professor). Else, There are Bomb, backdoor and etc.

In other side, Todays There are also other groups for resisting power in media. But they don't use violent method. They make OPEN-SOURCES. Wht do they make open-source?. It is for Democratic. In Windows, If we use software for invent software. We have to pay for microsoft. Is it fair? Democratic?. Open-source programmer invent the program for everyone. The most famous thing is Linux. Many people loved it. And Also Internet server, browser Theya are making. So Many people became they can use good software feely.

Public & Privacy

[summary]

When we studied about social network, the professor said about surveilance. The surveilance problem is how to supervise prisoners more effectly. And now, I'm going to say about surveilance to explain the problem of public & privacy.

In the ancient, it is very difficult problem to supervise people. Because they didn't have technologies for supervising. So, public & privacy wasn't serious problem for them. But in these days, the technology is too advanced. It is very easy problem to research someone's identity. So, many people have felt menace for protecting theirs privacy. Now a day, public & privacy is very important problem.

For example, In manhatten, newyork, there are a lot of supervising camera. It is for protecting citizen from many criminals. But people feel that they is supervised by someone. They think that their privacy is attacked.

In the Cyber world, There are also public & privacy problem. Do you know about Data mining?. Our personal information is taken by someone, companies, etc. They got the people's information and grouping with information. If you are parents of student, they send e-mail or call you to make you buying school materials or books. Our personality is mined by someone! How terrible world! But that is real.

What can be a solution for this problem? A one suggestion is inefficiency; make medias ineffciently. Why think like that? Because, Our extremly advanced technologies are making to menace our privacy. So, suggester think that it is better to make inefficiently, Then we will get security. But is it the best solution? I can't know.

It may happen that I misunderstood everything about that. So difficult to me. I summarized my opinion in many part. In fact, I don't feel the serious of public & privacy. I can't feel that my personality is robbed. May be, I want to ignore that. because if I always consider the problem of consider, I can't live like now. In fact, Many people live like me. They think that I am in security. But is it real? No. That is the weakness of human. Very sadness facts.

HUMANS

[summary]

We thought about What is the media for us.

Does it extend our sense such as seeing, touching hearing, smelling, tasting? Or, isn't it a prosthesis ? Many people say that the latter is much better. It seems that human got a extraordinary sensing without losing anything. But in fact, We lose our some part of power when we use the new media.

For example, Many people use the computer for writing something. They can write something faster and more efficient by computer than by hands. It will be possiple that they say "It is the expendation. When we use the computer, we can write easy.". But is it really fact? No. They lose a skill of hand wirting. Many people feels hard to write by hands. and the shape of letter become bad. Computer can be prosthesis. Many people can't write something without computer.

The media technology have become a part of humans! Computer, Internet, TV, etc... Many people can't live without that. The media became the prothesis.

Do you know "GongGak Gidongdae"? It is a SF animation. The material of animation is Cyborg. The background of animation is the future. People in animation studied that how human can live eternally. They solve the problem using Cyborg. They replace all parts of body except brain with machines. So they can live eternally. It is so profound animation. The media technology became a human almost.

I feel that I can't live anymore without media. I'm always living media. Computer, Internet, Tv, News paper, etc... All is the media. If every media is gone, How we live? Media Technologies are being parts of our life. We can say Media is one of Prothesis.
Is it possible Cyborg in the future?. If it is possible, the world become terrible. I can't permit cyborg. I hope that the cyborg won't show up.

COMPUTER GAMES

[summary]

The computer games are one of that is near by our life. Many people enjoy playing the game. but only few people have made games. In this week, We studied about what are important things in making game, and I summarize what I studied.

What is in a game engine? There are many things in a game engine. For example, a game engine includes graphics, physics, A.I and a lot more. They construct the game.

However, it is not true that the game players always like that is already made by programmer. The game players want to have their own, they want to express their personality. So they modify the game to what they want. For example, modify the character, clothes, color, etc. We saw the examples with pong How the people modified the games.

What makes a good game ? play? story? realism? or something else? It can be changed by player's identification. But usually people say that the popular game is good game.

We learned that people make media and then media make people. Computer games are also a media. So computer games influence people's identity especially with gender. The games which boys like and the games which girls like is not same. Computer games also influence constituting human's identity.

In privately, I don't enjoy playingthe computer game. But when I was middle school and high school, I also enjoyed playing the game. Why don't I enjoy playing the computer games? Because of the difficulty to approach that. It is too complex and difficult. The technology of making computer games is going more and more complexive.

COMPUTER - AID

[summary]

We have learned about Computer-aid.
This week's key point is that Every digital media technology has an architecture that can be usedto transform work, play and governance.

Computer replaces human's doing. For example, People have drawn architectual design drawing by their hands since long time ago. And many productive activity have been done by humans. But now, in many parts of work area, It doesn't need human's hands anymore. Because Computer replace them, and Computer and machine have more productivity and efficency then human. Now, People uses the computer sciences it called a COMPUTER - AID.

The representative Computer-aid basic system is CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing). CAD is used for designing something especially architectual design drawing. Using CAD is very accurate and efficiency. We can consider very detail and precious parts when using CAD. CAM is used for manufactual activity. We have to design something with CAD or Computer-aid basic system at first. Then, Computer would manufacture what we designed automatically. It is usually used in Manufactual plants. Because of Using CAM, Machines displace human's hands completely. Human's hands is not accurate and fast, and makes many inferior goods. But machine doesn't do like that. There are only few inferior goods. See Car, Who makes car with their hands? Who makes air plane or computer with their hands? It is machines doing. Machines do. Human is only needed to recognize whether it is a inferior goods or not.

Computer-aid is a planner to design structure of someting. In fact, People have tried to make a structure with more precision and efficiency. Especially, in surveilance area, People thought how to supevise prisoner efficiently. In 1800s, they used a Circle form structure. supervisor top is central of prison area, and cell is located outline of circle. So supervisor can see prisoner easily. They didn't used computer. But the effort to advance designing made Computer-aid science.

I was very embarrased because of downloading problem in Website. So I had to write many parts of summary depending on my memory. But Computer-aid is not far with me. I already use computer-aid. Illustrator is also computer-aided-design.

Next week, we will study about Computer game. It is so interesting area. I expect it.

Human-Computer Interaction.

[summary]

Do you know that people often interact with media technologies as though the technologies were people ? Our technologies have developed since long time ago, and media technologies became more complicated. So it would be needed to interact between human and machines as thouh machines made by human.

At first, people made a mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer and tried to improve that. but today, people try to make a new tool. For example, touch screen, percieving finger print or eye, incognizing voice or moving, webcam. The new tool even considerated ergonomic. So now we can interact with computer more efficient and fast.

it is really possible interacts with computer? before discussing that, we have to know What is the Ethnomethodology. How do people make sense of the world? someone says that we use the documentary method. but Ethnomethodology differs from other sociological perspectives in one very important respect. Ethnomethodologists asuume that social order is illusory. They believe that social life merely appears to be orderly; in reality it is potentially chaotic.

We believe that we really interact other people. but is it fact? just we believe that they understand I said. It may happen that other people are understanding with another method.
Also in Human-Computer. We cannot see the computer understand our said. just we believe it. it may all thing is illusory.

In fact. I can't understand my written as though it wirtten by my hands. But, I can understand outline of what is the HCI. May be, it is a method to connect people with computer more efficency, and give and take. People does not always gives, and Computer also does noy always recieve. There are mutual acting between people and computer. That is the HCI.

Artificial Intelligence (A.I)

[summary]

Who is the Alan Turing ? He is so called that Found of computer science, artificial intelligence.
He is a mathematician, a philosopher, a codebreaker, (a gay man.)
He suggest "IMITATION GAME". "The new form of the problem can be described in terms of a game which we cakk the "imitation game'. It is played with three people, a man, a woman, and an interrogator who may be of either sex. The interrogator stays in a room apart
from the other two. The object of the game for the interrogatoris to determine which of the other two is tha man and which is the woman." It is the man's object in the game try and cause the interrogator to make wrong identification. For example, if the man pretend to be a female, the interrogator will be confused. on the other hand, The object of the game for the woman is to help the interrogator.
What is the Artificial Intelligence (A.I)? It is defined by Marvin Minsky, 1963. Artificial intelligence (A.I) is the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence as if done by human. Then, go back to the Turing's "IMITATION GAME" We now ask the question. 'What will happen when a machine takes the part of the man in this game? Will the interrogator decide wrongly as often when the game is played like this as he does when the game is played between a man anda woman? We can evaluate the efficency of Artificial intelligence. When the computer (A.I) pretend to be human, the interrogator has to choose one that must be human with assumption. If the interrogator choose the A.I, that A.I system is very efficenct.
What are things which A.I needs ? A.I needs the ablity of Knowledge representation, Natural language understanding, Speech understanding, Vision, Robotics, Machine learning, etc...
but there are problems A.I missing common sense. A.I can not answers to questions can take more than one form. A.I don't always take answers literally. Stories aren't really sories if they don't have a central problem. Schizophrenia can be dis-functional. If you want that the A.I can percieve around, you must input all the possiblity. but it is impossible! There are many problems in A.I.
Altough there are many problems which should be solved, The technology of A.I has many possiblity.

In this week, the class was very fun and interesting. because the subject (Artificial Intelligence) was very interesting to me. Can the A.I like that in S.F movie come our real world? It seems to be impossible now, but in the future which has more improved science than now, It may be possible like the movie A.I.

So far, We studied 5 key points

1. When technologies connect or separate people, they become media.

2. Technologies embody social, political, cultural, economic and philosophical ideas and relationships.

3. When a medium is new, it is often used to simulate old media.

4. New media do not replace old media, they displace them.

5. People make media and then media make people.

and this week, We learned two key points.

- New media technologies usually reinforce existing social networks or even work to isolate people.

- (BUT) When new media technologies facilitate new social networks, they simultaneously challenge existing social, political and economic relationships.

I will say how we understand about social network with this two keypoints.

Many people think that Social network is studied by only sociologist.
Of course, the most part of reserch is taken by sociologist.
but the social network analysis is an interdisciplinary.
Physicists and mathematicians have made large contributions to understanding networks in general as graph and thus contributed to an understanding of social networks too.
The studying of social networks is not limited to only one field.

What does the studying of social network do?
The research help to understand that people's pattern and to predict people's behavior by
analyisig relationship of people.

Until now, many people studied about social network

The guy emphasized with black mark connect boygroup with girlgroup.

So the guy is bridges.

if you are central to a network you have bonding capital.

The diane is centrality because many people is connected with her.

How can we apply social network to Information Technology?

The IT make possible huge and convenient Social network.

Think about CYWORLD. We can make a relation easily with other people by using Cyworld.

If we want to meet people has same interesting or same objective or same hobby,

the cyworld help us.

Our new media technology made possible easy to form huge network.

What is the World-Wide Web?
We studied about WWW (World-Wide Web) in this week.
WWW was made by Tim berners-lee.
It is the stated genealogy of the technology.
Bush's Memex, Ted nelson's writing on hypertext Xenadu,
Berners-lee early implementations WWW.

He (Berners-lee) said that The WWW was deceloped to be a pool of human knowledge,
which would alow collaborators in remote sites to share their ideas and all aspects of a common project.

What is the WWW?

First answer is that WWW is a collaboratively authored hypertext.
In other words, WWW is an aggregate with Hypertext

Second, WWW is a standard.
WWW was admited as a standard by many organizations.
If WWW wasn't admited as a standard,
WWW would be used only specific location.
Because WWW was admited as a standard,
We use WWW system in everywhere, in the World.

What organizations that admit WWW as a standard are there ?
We heard that
ISO (International standards organization)
IETF (Internet engineering task force)
RFC (Request for comments)
W3C (World-wide web consortium)

Last answer is that the www is a vast, heterogeneous network of people and machines.
That is to say WWW is very Big.
It is the World-Wide Web.

We also learned about URI (Universal resource identifier)
URI involves URL (ssu name), URN (persistent location: declare)

Html -> hypertext markup language
http -> hypertet transfer protocol
ftp -> rile transfer protocol
smtp -> simple mail transfer protocol
nntp -> network news transfer protool.

[Summary}

HyperText

We learned two Key points last week.
One is that When technologies connect or separate people, they become media.
The others is that Technologies embody social, political, cultural, economic and philosophical
ideas and relationship.

This week, We also learned two Key points which is New.
First, When a medium is new, it is often used to simulate old media.
Second, New media do not replace old media, they displace them.
We will understand them through example of Engelbart.

Now, We are going to think about the relationship of dadaism and Hypertext at First.

We learned How Dadaist wirte a poem.
For example,
Each of them writes a sentence and They gather sentences written by each of them.
Then they arrange gathered random, and Say "It is a poem!"

Other Example, it is called auto-wirte, They write on the paper with not thinking.
they also say "It is a great poem"

Third Example, it is called Cut-ups.
They gathered everything; article, music, picture, movie contents
and they use them(article,music...) to make Works.

There are no ideas!

Why did I say about dadaism?
Because The concept of Hypertext has similarity with Dadaism.
For example, Suppose that you found the hypertext declared COMPUTER and
clicked the hypertext. Do you Know What webpage will show up on the monitor?
is it witten about What is the COMPUTER ?
or is it the on-line shoping mall of COMPUTER ?
you can't know about that!
You just follow the link.
you can't know What linked!

so There are similarity with Dadaism!

From now on, I am going to discuss Engelbart's idea.
We all read the Text 'AUGMENTING HUMAN INTELLECT'

He wanted to augment man's intellect.
because this World is very complex!
"Man's population and gross product are increasing at a considerable rate,
byt the complexity of his problems grows still faster, and the urgency with
which solutions must be found becomes steadily greater..."

He wanted Better & faster comprehension , and Better & faster & more solutions to problems.
So he suggested idea 'augmenting human intellect'

He suggested that H-LAM/T system; Human using Language, Artifacts., Methodology, in which he is Trained.
Objective of this idea is that Cooperation of Human and Computer.
The man touch the keyboard, and move the mouse. - HUMAN PROCESS
The computer accept man's intention and operate and output in monitor.
This is the cooperation and communication of human and Computer.

So he invented Mouse, Graphic interface, client/server Networking System, E-mailing System.
And made a WORKSTATION.

He demonstrated His New system in front of a number of audience.
and The World is Suprised for his amaizing invention.
Still, His idea have used by Personal Computer.

Do you remember the New two keypoint ?
When the New media Show up,
the old media is abandoned.
Engelbart's New idea displace old media.
Every people abandoned old sytem, and used the New system made by Engelbart

Hypertext is a New media.
One way that digital media has been understood is as new forms of writing, reading, thinking.

The concept of this week is very difficult to understand and find what is the core.
But I did my best.

The idea of engelbart was very amazing thing.
When He demonstrate Workstation in front of people,
The world is suprised. Because His idea is advanced technology!

Engelbart thought about the AUGMENTING HUMAN INTELLECT,
and endeavor to realize that.

Becasue of such as efforts, the relationship of human and computer have advanced,
Now We can communicate computer very easy.
Everyone can use the computer. even kid!

The amazing technology that we are using have been invented by Creative people, Engelbart,
Vannevar bush,etc. and it will be continued that Creative Ideas make a New World!

[Summary]

Digital Media technologies connect or separate people.
Media technologies connect person with person and people with information and information with information, and also Media technologies seperate!
Media TECH embody social, political, cultural, economic and philosophical ideas and relationship. Media is a Medium.

Vannevar bush, MIT proffesor, designed the MEMEX.
Now a day, There are so many experience, and many difficult to control experiences.
MEMEX will assist us to connect our desire with neccesary information.
Like human mind operates by association, MEMEX use associative indexing.
So It is very fast and flexibility. we get information which we want to get very easy.
Although Bush think that The MEMEX will show up in the future, our WWW is very similar with MEMEX!

because I didn't read which text the proffesor assign to us, I'm very embarrassed in class.
From now on, I will read assignment by all means. I percieve that the most important thing is to prepare class.
Vannevar bush's Idea is very interesting and amazing. How could he predict these days ?
He's idea became a real! MEMEX is realization as WWW!
It is very fun to imagine the future. because The idea We imagined also can be a real!
I am dreaming in Soongsil university. The media technologies which I'm learning will assist me to accomplish my dream!
