After getting multiple people telling me how wonderful this show was, I decided to finally take a gander at this show. Funny, cute, and addicting, this was well worth the watch. When I first read the synopsis, I though that it was two people that were plotting a marriage scheme for their children, but I later realized that the president of the kimchi factory and the mother were the same person. That kind of made it a little less fun, as I would have liked to see two scheming parents, but it was still fun.

Hello everyone, it's TO :)

I hope you all had a wonderful, happy, and safe holiday.

I will finally get back to doing regular reviews later in the month. I've finished about fifteen drama series over my break, but I haven't had a chance to review them. As you might know, I moved to Connecticut almost a year ago. Since then, I've been busy with job hunting and odd work that I've been able to find. I've been filling in for a few people at work, so I've been working almost five days a week. Thus, I've really had no time. Even when I had time, it's not like reviewing was on my priority list haha. Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to be a bit more consistent at least for a few months.

I'm also doing research while I can for a book I've been working on for the past few years. I plan to self-publish if I can ever finish it. So far, I only have two chapters completed, and a bunch of ideas. Hopefully I'll be able to get the research I need finished in order to complete it. It might take ten years >.<. As you guys already know, I'm a really lazy bum. If I sit at my computer, I'll just end up watching dramas or reading stories. =,="

What have you been up to? Watch any good series lately? Let me know if you have any suggestions for dramas I should watch. I haven't had time to watch any current dramas since I've been trying to finish off the old dramas I have on my "watching" list. I still have 19 dramas to finish, and some of them haven't been subtitled, so who knows if they will ever get off my list.

I hope everyone is doing well. As for me, this year has been a hit & miss of too many ups & downs for me...err...I am exhausted just thinking of it. Sorry I have been so busy and not able to work more in our projects. Currently I am looking for a job...just got turned down on my first choice...blahblahblah...but not my best choice so don't feel too bad for me:D I will keep on looking.

As the year is ending, I hope you all have a more smooth year than me and hope next year will be a better one. Please feel free to share your memorable moments for 2012 and what you wish for next year in our comments area.

Due to certain events, I lost a job...yet I am not unemployed...WHY???
Last few years, (from the job I just lost) in 2010 there was a fire at work, 2011 there was a fire and an explosion at work, then in 2012 there was a...can guess WHAT HAPPENED???...

I am sure there were more interesting and weird things that did happened to moi...but I can't remember it right now:P Now on to 2013 wishes...

Can I be completely honest with you, dear readers? I watched this whole series because someone told me that it was absolutely wonderful. However, I wasn't so impressed. I guess it could just be because I have never been interested in straight romance dramas, but I've been having a hard time with this whole drama. I can't say that I remember everything about it, because I've put off this drama review for such a long time, but I remember that I didn't really enjoyed it that much.

REVIEW:
What can I possibly say? I think my rating said it all.

MBC really did a great job with this drama. It is simple, addicting, and just short of amazing. There were a few little errors here and there, but I think they did a really wonderful job with this drama. The biggest thing was the child actors, though. Whoever cast these little actors really needs an award. I think they really did great in the casting. Not only did they have similar presences as the actors that played the older characters, but the kids did really wonderful on their acting. I definitely recommend this drama for anyone who likes Joeson period dramas.

Extravagant Challenge

SYNOPSIS:

She decides to delve into the entertainment world and become even more successful than Sho to get back at him. Kyoko therein meets Ren, another actor in her agency, who helps motivate her to become a top entertainer."

REVIEW:
One word: daebak! Or, should I say jincai? Or, maybe even sugoi desu? I really cannot decide which language to use.

Extravagant Challenge, the Taiwan version of the Japanese manga Skip-Beat, is really the fusion of Asian film. A Japanese story, Taiwan producers, and two Korean actors make for a good mix of cultures. Although I cannot stand dubs, I was happy enough with the story that I really didn't mind. The story was funny and the acting wasn't bad.

Although I have not really read the original manga, and cannot verify how close it is to the original storyline, I can say that the story is very funny and lighthearted. They kept the original anime-like style, but didn't lose their acting skills completely while doing it. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone who wants a lighthearted, short drama. Then again, I may be biased due to my love for Siwon.

Wild Romance

Eun Jae who is a fan of 'Blue Seagulls', starts a fight with Moo Yul who led the 'Green Dreamers' to victory. The next day, internet is on fire with the video called 'Humiliated Park Moo Yul'. Because of this video, career of both Moo Yul and Eun Jae, who recently got a job as a bodyguard, are in danger. In the end, they decided to put on a show against the public! They lie that Eun Jae is Moo Yul's private bodyguard and the video was recorded when Eun Jae was giving a self-defence demonstration to Moo Yul. Like this, Eun Jae becomes real bodyguard of Moo Yul. It seemed like everything worked out just fine, but the problem is that they can't stand each other's existence..."

REVIEW:
Comedy? Romance? Hmmm.... Not completely sure. I guess there is a romantic relationship, and some funny scenes, but it didn't make me laugh very much. Maybe it's the actors? I really don't know, but I wouldn't say it was funny enough to be called a "comedy." Ridiculous? Yes. However, not THAT funny.

I think they should add "mystery" to this drama or something. The whole thing is about finding who the creepy fan is that keeps sending him stuff. It's not a bad drama to watch, it's just that the only character I actually liked was the "Robot", played by Kang Dong Ho. That guy just makes me laugh every time. If it weren't for him, I might not have made it through the series.

REVIEW:
What can I possibly say about this drama? I'm kind of lost at this point. I started watching this even though it looked like a rip off of the popular Korean drama "You're Beautiful" which aired in 2009. I tried to think positively, telling myself that this could be good even though it wasn't a new idea. I liked watching it, even though all of the ideas were rehashed ones, but I still can't get my mind around the ending.

Where was the ending? Did I miss it? Where did it go? Did this show get cancelled, or did they give up on the drama completely? I'm so lost here. I might have to go back and watch the last episode, as it didn't look like the ending to me. I was expecting it to continue as there was no closing. It felt like a fragmented sentence was the end of a long essay. You read a long essay and expect there to be a closing note, but you only get an incomplete idea.

Can someone tell me the ending? Or, do I have to be high to get it?

After my poor laptop abandoned me, I pretty much lost all my data. Meaning, all the dramas that I had watched and was planning to review were gone. So, even though I had dramas that I had finished, I didn't have a list to go by in order to review them. So, basically, I've been spending this whole time trying to finish some dramas in order to continue my blog.

Yes, our group is currently active and translating The Myth (神话). The video raw (video without subtitles) is downloaded from online and it is free. As most of the Chinese dramas are not copyrighted internationally, we actually do not know if we are running any risk with copyright laws. US copyright laws are stricter than Chinese ones but the internet really takes copyright laws into the gray zone as most people and even the law makers themselves do not fully agree nor comprehend the laws governing the internet.

From my viewpoint, ancient Chinese dramas are more popular, especially the WuXia genre over contemporary dramas (I might be too bias).

4，字幕组做过的电视剧里，最受欢迎的是哪一部？字幕组选择哪部剧来翻译，一般有哪些衡量标准？是看它在中国的受欢迎程度呢，还是猜测其是否会受到海外人们的喜欢，还是随意地凭借字幕组成员自己的喜好。

Most of our fans loved Heavenly Sword & Dragon Sabre and The Myth dramas the best. We really don’t care which drama is popular in China, or even bother wasting our time guessing who is interested in what drama…that is not really how fansubbing works. We select the dramas to subtitle based solely on our group members’ interest. Fansubbing really is make possible by fans like us. We are the fans and we like the dramas so much that we want to subtitle it to share it with all the fans out there in the world. That pretty much sums it up. (If the drama does not catch our interest, it will never get subtitled.)

Most of the fansubbing audiences are from all over the world, so it is really the international audience that are our fans and that forms our group. You can use our Heaven and Earth Fansubbing Group as a perfect example of the type of fans and workers that form the whole fansubbing community. Zilly is from US, loves watching dramas and started subbing because I want to improve my Chinese and give thanks to all the subbers that enable me to watch & understand all the dramas out there in the world. Pomi is from France and loves to watch dramas, especially Chinese dramas to help improve Chinese comprehension. Currently Pomi is in China learning Chinese. Then we have Gurlzrule who is our translator from Singapore, Willy our blog manager from Indonesia, Blumischief our video encoder from India. We all have the love of drama in common and most of us just want to share a good drama with everyone out there.

To a point I do agree that people are interested in developed countries pop culture because it looks different, more sexy, more powerful or more beautiful compare to what they commonly know in their own country. But I also think it is because many people are just simply curious about new things and how other people lives in another country compared to their own self. Interesting enough, Americans have a great interest in Asia…you can say American guys loves Asian women! There is always a mystique about Asian woman and it has nothing to do with China becoming a more developed country. China becoming a more developed country is attracting money and many companies to open branches in China; currently China’s communist state, repressive bans on many situations are not attractive to most drama viewers, only the business opportunists. Maybe in 10 years when China is more developed and are more open to democracy, the drama viewers will find it more attractive.

I think dramas should be about dreams/fantasy, reality, and more. There are actually audiences for all types of dramas. There is the world out there and everyone wants to see different things, therefore there is no need to just produce or broadcast only one type of dramas. I am sure there will be interests in China’s daily lives…if the show is produced well.

I really can’t abandon all my experiences…as all my experiences make me what I am and what I am interested in. I would really like a comedic, reality show about the Chinese government and how it works, more like a satirical drama. And throw a romantic couple (Korean/Japanese guy & Chinese woman who met in a small book store) in the drama and the woman is a Chinese government spy who plays a double role as a rich & poor character and the guy travels to Tibet…mmm…it might be rather interesting. Let me know if a movie or drama like that ever gets produced, I might be interested in subbing itJ

I think China and its people are still rather conservative compared to my country. I do think the new generation of Chinese are more open and are less conservative, but I have not really come across many of those as most social sites are banned by the Chinese government and most Chinese citizens cannot easily get access to foreigners like us.

China’s current system & cultures do have core values, such as ethnics, morality, right and wrong and many other various life values. Many foreigners are open and acceptable to it. But unfortunately it is not really communicated well to the world as most people find the Chinese language extremely difficult to understand, too much negative news about China’s communist state, widespread repressive ban of the internet and government corruption does not help to endear itself to most westerners.

The Secrets of a Bum by TuBeObsessed

After my many years of experience in living off ramen noodles and bologna sandwiches, I have gained some very important knowledge that I would like to share with my fans.

As you know, I'm a bum. For those who are not familiar with the slang term "Bum" from America, the definition of this particular word "A lazy or shiftless person, especially one who seeks to live solely by the support of others." Although I don't wish to be a bum, I am extremely good at my current job. Here are some useful tips for all, bum or not.

Panera is a great place to waste time. If you are anything like me, you feel kind of uncomfortable sitting in a cafe or business without paying. However, if you go to a place like Panera, where they serve cups but don't actually have waiters, you can pretend you ordered something from their cafe without spending any money. Every morning I sneak in the back door of the Panera Bread restaurant across the street from the library while I wait for it to open. There are these little stations where customers are to place their cups and platters when they are done. You can simply steal a cup and platter from the station and place it next to you. Other customers may look at you funny, but at least you will look like a regular customer to the others that didn't see you take it. The workers will automatically assume they just didn't see you when you ordered and leave you alone. P:
Get cash back instead of using an ATM. ATM's may charge you fees for getting cash out from your bank account, but grocery stores don't charge you extra for cash back. If you plan on getting a bottle of water or something from the grocery store, and you need some cash in your pocket, I suggest getting cash back.
Buy in bulk, almost expired goods that don't really go bad, dented canned goods or in season. Buying in bulk is a great way to save money. Personally, I like to buy family meals, cook them, and then split them into individual servings for later. It is so much cheaper than buying them individually, and it actually takes about the same, or even less, cook time. Some grocery stores will give discounts on expiring items or damaged goods in order to save money. Be sure not to buy moldy items, though. Lastly, please remember to buy in season. If strawberries don't really grow abundantly January, you should probably avoid buying them in January. The strawberries will probably taste horrible and you'll spend a lot of needless money on them. Eat an orange instead!
Walk if you are less than two miles away from your destination. Unless you need to be at your destination at a specific time, or if you would have to walk down a sidewalk-less highway, it's best to walk to your destination if it's less than two miles away. Although it may not seem like much money to drive there, things add up quickly. Going on the bus can also become expensive. You might as well get fit and save money.
Go to the gym every day. If you live less than three miles from a gym, I suggest you go there every day. It will save you money. Don't actually be stupid enough to sign up for a membership. Just pack a bunch of things in your backpack, and then walk there and back. You will save money and still lose weight.
Only buy what you can carry. People today go into a store, only buy one item, and actually think they need a cart. You don't need a cart. In fact, people will probably look at you crazy if you use a cart for just one item. When you put an item into a cart, you start to think that you need to fill up the cart. However, if you have to carry all of your items, you usually buy a lot less.
One person's trash is another person's treasure. There are so many thrift, pawn, and outlet stores that sell items very cheap. However, when we shop for stuff, we usually think of name brand stores. In second hand stores, you can find the most unique and expensive items for extremely cheap prices. Sometimes stores don't even know what they are worth and treat them like junk. You can also find couches, televisions, desks, bikes, and tons of things that people are going to throw away on Craigslist or freecycle.
Learn how to sew. Even the basics of sewing can save a lot of money. Have a hole in your favorite shirt? Well, you're screwed if you don't know how to sew. Bought a non-returnable pair of jeans only to find out that it didn't have a zipper? Well, good luck! Bent over and your pants ripped? If you don't know how to sew, I really hope you have a jacket to cover the hole.
Get a library card. People spend so much money a year just on entertainment. I really don't understand. At the library, there is usually free wi-fi, you can rent amazing films, and you can check out hundreds of books. Why spend all that money when it can all be free?
Be female. Sorry guys, but there is one trick to being a bum that is just difficult for most men to pull off. To be a good bum, you kind of have to be female. Clubs and bars sometimes give out free drinks to women on certain days, you can bat your eyes a hopeless male to get a free meal, and people tend to be a lot more sympathetic to a girl bum than to a guy bum. Sorry!

"Based on the popular novel by Jin Yong Kam Yung, he also wrote Legend of the Condor Heroes and Return of the Condor Heroes, the Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre takes place during 14th century China during the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty, roughly 100 years after the events of Return of the Condor Heroes. After decades of struggles, famine, and bitterness which the Chinese citizens blamed on the Yuan Dynasty's misgovernment, the Martial Arts sects have begun to rebel. Prince Ruyong asks Cheng Kun, a Shaolin monk with an ulterior motive, for a plan on how to deal with the rebels."

For this drama, I really want to give it a lower score but I am trying my best to be nice. Now, I will admit that it was a show that got me addicted, but the production did not give the story justice. It was quite obvious with the props that they were stretching the budget a bit. I mean, did you see that stuffed polar bear they used? There were so many problems with the special effects, props, and acting that I really don't know where to begin. However, since "A" is the first letter of the alphabet, I guess I should start with the acting.

I may not know much about acting, but there are some universal expressions that can be distinguished no matter the culture. Many of the actors didn't do well in expressing pain, and it really annoyed me. It kind of made me want to repeatedly bang my head against my desk. It wasn't so bad once the main character was old enough and the main story started, but by then I was about 10 episodes in. In all honesty, I think that's why it was so bad. If you're going to pick bad actors for the historic scenes, you should probably use "flashback" orders. What I mean is that some writers choose to start the story off a quarter of the way through the story and do flashbacks of past events to let the viewers understand what previously happened in the main characters' life. This works better than having to sit through 10 episodes (7.5 hours) of bad acting before the main story even begins.

The next main point I have is the special effects.

1. The snow land looked like desert sand. It's as if they filmed at the beach and then digitally whitened the sand to make it look like snow.
2. Whenever they did an aerial view of the Fiery Ice island (or whatever they called it), I could see a sail boat in the shot. (Maybe I'm seeing things?)
3. They use the same aerial shots over and over and over again. Like the scene with the birds flying or the aerial view of the island.
4. The change in scenery was way too often on the snowy island. It looks like various artists created different view points for the backgrounds but never compared notes so the color of the sky/ground and general area goes back and forth during the scenes.
5. They get out of the water and the next moment they are completely dry.
6. Episode 4 - 12:02 - In this frame, you can see that they forgot to use the special effects. You can actually see the raw footage, including the green screen in the background. I have to say, though, it's a nice green screen they have there.
7. Although I didn't notice it myself, I heard there was one instance where you could see the wire pretty clearly. If anyone knows the timing for that, I'd really like to know as I'd like to see what I missed.
8. When they did an aerial view of an iceberg, the water didn't react with the ice at all. A professional would use visual effects to make it look like the ocean was reacting to the iceberg. Because of that, it looked extremely fake. I won't even start on how it looked like styrofoam.
9. An iceberg usually has at least half of it's volume under water. They obviously didn't know that, though, as some of the shots didn't reflect that fact.

I also have a few micellaneous comments I'd like to discuss. For instance, why doesn't she call him a hubby-type name instead of "Ge"? They are married, yet she calls him that. It's just kind of odd to me, you know? I'm sure that even in that dynasty they had words like "husband" or "dear" to describe their spouse. "Ge" is fine for very good friends or lovers, but for your husband? Secondly, do you want to know how Eskimos came about? The married couple had a few more kids, but they abandoned them on the island. (Ha ha ha, I'm just kidding.) Thirdly, and maybe I'm wrong here, the main character completely forgets about one of the girls for like ten episodes. He goes to save her, but ends up getting distracted and never mentions her again until she finally shows up. What's up with that? Last, but not least, I never would have thought I'd read the word "Lion King" in this series. I don't know why, but I found it comical.

Looking back, I really did enjoy the series. The only problem is that they didn't produce it well enough to really make the story shine. I can't really say if the reason the effects were so bad was because they didn't have enough money, or they just didn't hire the right people to do the work, but I guess it can't be helped. If you have already read the novel before, I'd suggest that you just skip the first 10 episodes in order to save yourself the misery of having to notice all of the acting and production problems that it had. The last 75% of the drama was very good, but they kind of botched the first quarter of it. I probably won't watch it again mainly because I cannot stand watching all of the mistakes, but it's a decent show to watch if you are bored.
