The Original "Black Friday"

144 years ago, on September 24, 1869, the original "Black Friday" hit the stock markets, triggered by an attempt by "robber barons" Jay Gould and James Fisk to corner the U.S. gold market.

Since Lincoln had introduced the fiat "greenback" paper dollar and stopped the redemption of paper money for equal amounts of gold money in 1862, the greenback had traded at a discount to U.S. tender gold coins. Instead of being traded in "dollars per ounce", since the U.S. was on the gold standard, gold was traded on the New York Gold Exchange as "the amount of paper dollars to buy $100 in gold dollars".

During the height of the war in 1863, with a Union victory uncertain, it took $250 in greenbacks to buy $100 in gold coins. In 1869, when Fisk and Gould started their scheme, it took around $130 in greenbacks to buy five double eagle $20 gold coins. This works out to about $26.87/oz.

Although the total amount of the gold market was only around $15 million, no one could corner the market and drive the price up because of the U.S. government. The Treasury had approximately $95 million in gold reserves, and bought and sold gold on the open market to keep prices near the official gold standard. The government would sell gold in exchange for greenbacks, then use the paper money to buy Treasury bonds off the open market. This helped reduce the government debt. If the money supply became too restricted, the government would buy gold using greenbacks.

Jay Gould realized that he needed some way to convince the government to refrain from selling gold, or lacking that, advance notice that the government was about to sell. He began by recruiting Abel Corwin, the husband of President Ulysses S Grant's sister, into the scheme. Corwin invited Gould and Fisk to New York social functions which the President attended, and they expounded on how the government should allow the (unregulated) open market set the price of gold. Additionally, they touted high gold prices as helping U.S. farmers export the over-abundant harvest that year.

Corwin also helped Gould and Fisk get a former Union general, Daniel Butterfield, appointed as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of buying and selling gold for the government. In return for a $10,000 bribe, Butterfield agreed to lobby against government gold sales, and to tip off Gould if any were planned. The band even attempted to bribe President Grant's personal secretary and his wife(!) but were rebuffed.

Now that the pieces were in place, Gould and Fisk set about making millions. After convincing Grant to halt gold sales, they began in early September buying up all the gold they could. By September 16, they had nearly $10 million (2/3 of the total market) either in physical bullion on in calls. By September 23rd, it took $144 in greenbacks to buy $100 in gold ($29.77/oz) and the amount of gold the conspirators held equaled total U.S. gold reserves. International commerce, which depended on gold bullion, was being strangled, with businesses forced to pay whatever they had to in order to get gold. Hundreds of speculators jumped in, borrowing heavily. By 11:30 the morning of September 24, the price was $162 per $100 in gold ($33.59/oz), and the economy was on the brink of collapse.

Alerted by Secretary of the Treasury Boutwell, Grant found out about the attempted bribery of his wife and secretary. Butterfield caught wind of what was happening, and sent an urgent message to Gould, who started selling into the rally. Grant telegraphed Boutwell, and told him to dump $4 million of U.S. gold reserves into the market immediately and buy $4 million in bonds. Word got out around noon that day, and the rout for the exit began Gold dropped from $162 to $133 in less than an hour.

Fisk had been kept in the dark about Butterfield's warning, and was merrily buying as much gold as he could, crowing that he would send the price to $200. But Gould was selling faster than Fisk was buying, liquidating their entire position plus any that Fisk bought before the rug was totally pulled out from under the market. Gould had needed Fisk to keep buying publicly, to pretend the market was still cornered while he dumped their holdings.

It worked. They dumped their holdings for approximately $150 per contract, netting around $15 million dollars (almost $255 million today). They spent $2 million on buying a New York judge from their friend "Boss" Tweed at Tammany Hall, and hiring lawyers to fend off hundreds of lawsuits, leaving $10 million between them. Even Congressional investigations, led by Congressman (and future President) James A. Garfield, failed to punish them. For, after all, their market activities were completely legal.

Others weren't so lucky. Most speculators were extremely leveraged, and had to sell stock holdings into the resulting panic to meet their calls. The stock market fell 20%. The prices of agricultural exports were chopped in half. By some reports, 50 Wall St brokerages collapsed, and another 150 were insolvent. The entire U.S. economy was affected, and it took months for things to return to normal for those who had survived.

It occurs when the normal bacteria found in the vagina is overtaken by unfriendly bacteria. You might say it's an imbalance of bacteria. This isn't even an unusual condition.

Any woman of childbearing age is potentially at risk for BV. Even women who are not sexually active can get it.

What does Bacterial Vaginosis feel like? How can you recognize the symptoms? Here are the basic ways to recognize BV:

• Vaginal discharge that is thicker and lasts longer than normal

• Vaginal discharge smells sour or fishy, particularly after intercourse

• The color of the discharge is white or gray

• Painful burning sensation when urinating with no other indications of a urinary tract infection

One or more of these symptoms would certainly tell you that treatment is needed. But here's an oddity about BV that differs from yeast infection: Some women who have chronic BV have NONE OF THOSE SYMPTOMS.

For them, the infection has months to years to build up in the body without challenge. The long-term consequence are devastating as well as the ongoing discomfort.

A basic test used by the physician to make a diagnosis is the pH level. This is a chemical measurement that determines the level of acid or alkaline which is an important factor in knowing whether the conditions are right to sustain Bacterial Vaginosis.

As part of the pelvic examination, the doctor removes a small sample of fluid from the vagina to use for this test. The procedure is quick and painless.

Even a healthy woman has bacteria in the vaginal fluid, which cause no problems. If Bacterial Vaginosis is present, the fluid sample will show an increase in certain microorganisms such as Gardnerella, Bacteriodes, Mycoplasma and Mobiluncus. Over time these harmful bacteria destroy the useful bacteria.

A woman has no idea that this war between good bacteria and harmful bacteria is happening unless she experiences obvious symptoms. As irritating as the discharge and order can be, it's an ideal early warning system telling her to get a checkup.

The pH is a healthy vagina ranges from 3.8 to 4.5 (WebMD). When Bacterial Vaginosis is present, the pH count rises about 4.5. A fluid sample may also be viewed under a microscope with a bold dye added.

The testing for Bacterial Vaginosis involves both chemistry and a good nose for bacteria. The gram-positive (harmful) bacteria turn bright purple while the gram-negative (healthy) bacteria look pale to pink. Gardnerella, gram negative bacteria, is often found with BV.

The good nose aspect of Bacterial Vaginosis testing is that when vaginal fluid is exposed to the test fluid, the trademark strong fish odor is released. The test technician literally sniffs the test sample to identify that odor which has become all too familiar to a woman who has Bacterial Vaginosis. Granted this does not sound like a pleasant job, but fortunately some people have the training to apply this process needed in making the diagnosis.

A Case History With A Top Athlete

Recently, I was asked to help a young level ten gymnast. Level ten gymnasts are a few notches below gymnasts who compete at the Olympic level.

When she came to see me, this young athlete was lacking in self-confidence, enthusiasm and focus. Her performance had been rather flat and she appeared to be deteriorating from her peak performances of some time ago.

After getting to know her and her family a bit, it became clear that we needed to make a few shifts to help her to regain her edge and to compete more effectively.

First, it seemed that her mother was a bit too involved with this youngster's sport. I encouraged the mom to back off a bit and hover over her child a bit less. Wisely, the mom agreed to 'let her child be" a bit more. This change seemed to help the young gymnast to better own her sport and to feel less smothered by her parent.

Second, we learned that this athlete was a bit of an introvert when it came to competing. Some athletes love being the center of attention and they love to play to the crowd. Others, like this young lady, prefer to perform in a vacuum. It is important for athletes to know whether they are introverts or extroverts where the audience, coaches, parents, teammates and judges are concerned.

Third, this gymnast's coach seemed a bit disorganized, inconsistent and unclear where scheduling and routines were concerned. In sports like gymnastics, diving and figure skating, it is imperative that athletes know exactly what they will do when they compete. There is simply no room for vagueness or ambiguity when athletes do these complicated and dangerous routines.

Fourth, gymnasts frequently struggle with injuries. When this patient came to see me, she was not feeling well and was battling pain which was making it hard for her to stick her landings. She needed a little time to heal, so that she could compete without fear of physical industry and trust her body.

Fifth, even though this athlete was competing at a very high level, she had had very little formal mental training. I taught her several simple techniques to use on a twice daily basis and prior to competing. These techniques were a combination of self-hypnosis, visualization and meditation.

Making these five changes have helped this athlete to score better in recent events.

Sometimes, a multidimensional solution is needed to get a competitor back on the right path.

For me the holidays also mean arts and crafts. The holiday season is a perfect time for crafting! Perfect for creating homemade gifts or just making your own holiday décor, holiday crafts, or holiday cards.

Halloween: So the first holiday on the horizon is Halloween; probably one of the best holidays ever invented by anyone anywhere. Seriously, it's just an entire day of getting to dress up however you want and enjoying a ridiculous amount of sweets, or for the adults, getting to enjoy a ridiculous amount of "sweet" beverages.

It's best to make sure this is a party plan for kids who are over about age six or seven - younger kids just will not likely sit though a movie; their attention spans aren't yet settled enough for the long haul.

Err on the side of caution with ratings too. Many parents are very, very strict about ratings - even into the teen years. (Your writer's child has a fourteen year old friend who is still not allowed to watch M-rated movies with certain themes and content - so this is a point to consider, whatever the age group). This magical journey from 1986 has become a cult classic and is best for older primary school aged kids as it can be a bit dark and scary in parts. • Shrek. Rated PG. DreamWorks at its best. A mash-up of fairy tales for primary aged students, with fart jokes (hence the PG rating). Even bigger kids love this kids' flick - and its sequels.

• Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Rated G. Every parent would have grown up on this 1971 piece of cinematic gold. It's fun, it's colourful, and it has a beautiful moral at the end of the story. And every child should experience the joy of the Oompa Loompas.

The U.S. government may soon require online communications services to water down their encryption techniques.

The proposed legislation, which federal law enforcement and national security officials hope to present to Congress in 2011, would mandate that all services that can be used for online communications be capable of providing transcripts of their users' emails or chats to the government if asked. The services would have to be able to intercept and decode all encrypted messages sent using their sites or software.

The rules would affect e-mail transmitters like Blackberry, social networking sites like Facebook, and peer-to-peer messaging software like Skype. Officials hope to write the bill in general terms, without reference to specific technologies, so that other, yet unimagined, services would also fall under the regulations.

A 1994 law, the Communications Assistance to Law Enforcement Act(1), currently requires phone and broadband network providers to be capable of intercepting messages for the benefit of the cops, but that does investigators little good if messages are sent through online services that add their own encryption. Many online communications services currently allow users to send messages in ways that make it impossible for anyone, including the service providers, to intercept and unscramble the exchanges.

Law enforcement officials argue that the world of communications is "going dark" as criminals and terrorists increasingly turn to the Internet, instead of telephones, to communicate with one another. Officials don't lack the authority to eavesdrop in the arena of online communications; they simply lack the ability.

The United States is not the only country asking communications services to turn on the lights so Big Brother can keep watching. India and the United Arab Emirates have put pressure on Research In Motion, the Canadian maker of Blackberry smart phones, to make it easier for them to monitor messages. Some officials in India have even voiced suspicions that Research In Motion is already working with the United States to help it spy on encrypted communications.

I am all for giving counter-terrorism agents and federal law enforcement officers the tools they need to get the job done. Unlike many of those who are likely to speak out against this bill, I think the risk of large-scale government abuse of enhanced surveillance tools is pretty low. If the rules are implemented, law enforcement will probably be criticized more frequently for not making use of the tools at its disposal than it will be for using those tools too broadly.

But I doubt the increased burdens on service providers would really lead to investigators catching bad guys who otherwise would have eluded them. The agencies advocating the regulations, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, already have ample tools with which to ensnare stupid crooks. And the new regulations would do nothing to help with the detection and capture of smart criminals and terrorists.

As an illustration of the need for the regulations, an official told the New York Times about an investigation into a drug cartel that was delayed because the smugglers were using peer-to-peer software, making it difficult to intercept their communications. The official's statement seemed to imply that, with the new regulations in place, the smugglers would have been caught more quickly.

But chances are the smugglers used that software precisely because they knew it would put them in law enforcement's blind spot. If investigators shine a flashlight on these sorts of communications, smugglers will simply find other dark corners, physical or virtual, where they can negotiate their deals.

If the bad guys are forced to be more inventive, they won't face a scarcity of resources or possibilities. One technology blogger explains in detail how to hide files in JPG images.(2) With his easy, step-by-step instructions, anyone can learn how to email a "lolcats" photo (that's 'laugh-out-loud-cats,' meaning a picture of irresistibly adorable kitties) that also contains the time and place of a drug handoff. Computer users can also easily download free software allowing them to perform their own encryption instead of relying on communications service providers who could be hit with a subpoena.

And as investigators become more and more high-tech in their techniques, criminals can always respond by becoming more low-tech. After all, we don't require Federal Express to copy all the correspondence it delivers so documents can be turned over upon government subpoena.

The intentions behind the wiretapping proposal are honorable. The threats are real, and the need for timely information is urgent. But if electronic intercepts were the magic bullet, we would have captured Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri years ago. Unfortunately, they and their conspirators are smart enough not to hold their conversations where investigators are looking. When it comes to tracking down dangerous individuals, the detective work is going to have to be performed in other ways, most of which involve getting close enough to a suspect to bug, tail or talk to him.

But, while criminals and terrorists would go to great lengths not to communicate sensitive information through any means subject to the new regulations, others would not. Businesspeople would continue to tap away at their Blackberries, many of them without even realizing that their information had become less secure.

The changes that would allow service providers to access encrypted communications would also make it easier for hackers to get at that information. The proposal is "a disaster waiting to happen," Steven M. Bellovin, a Columbia University computer science professor, told The New York Times. "If they start building in all these back doors, they will be exploited."

Even those nefarious figures without superior computer skills stand to benefit from the proposal. If service providers are required to have access to users' communications in order to comply with government requests, there is also the possibility that rogue employees will sell that information to corrupt corporations looking to crack industry secrets, or even to hostile governments. Potential bribers and extortionists would have a guarantee that communications service providers could, if adequately baited, retrieve whatever information they might want.

I hope Congress will reject the proposed rules, but I am not optimistic. No matter how many security measures we have in place, there will inevitably be breaches, and some of them may be catastrophic. No politician wants to risk being blamed when something goes wrong.

While we wait for the proposal to make its way to the congressional halls, corporate technology managers and would-be entrepreneurial tycoons may want to study up on encryption techniques.

Moving your company's website up in the SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages) on the web's most popular search sites can be both a rewarding yet frustrating venture. This description will be displayed along with the key words that a user has typed into the search engine. An excellent, brief, and definitive description will grab a user's attention and get them to click your link.

Pictures of your products should all be named using a specific model number or descriptive tag that a search engine user may be looking for. Do not just use pic1, pic2, pic3, etc. Search engine spiders are very complex and thorough. They crawl through all the data necessary to vet out the information they require.

Keep it Simple

You may have a vision of your website that includes elaborate designs, video tutorials and links to every page imaginable at the click of a mouse. You need to put yourself in the position of a first-time visitor that knows very little about your products. You need to keep your site design simple. There is nothing that will drive a first-time buyer away faster than a complex and 'noisy' website. There is plenty of profit in sites that make it easy for a customer to complete a purchase without making their head spin.

Contact and Feedback

It is imperative that you include not only an email contact, but a live phone number as well for customers to reach you. Nothing destroys customer confidence faster than a website without contact information.

Include a consumer feedback section that encourages your customers to comment on their likes and dislikes of your site. The results just might surprise you!

When I first read about this, I brushed it off as no big deal because broadband Internet Connections are so commonplace these days, especially among gamers. Then I realized I was adopting the same mindset that got Microsoft Game Director Adam Orth in hot water when talking about the Xbox One’s always online policy. Not everyone has a stable Internet connection and to some the 300MB update might be something of an ordeal.

I don’t know enough about game development to say whether or not this day-one update could’ve been avoided, but I’m sure it’s frustrating to some that the news is just coming out now after so many have already pre-ordered the console.
