Now in its 10th generation, the compact Toyota Corolla is the best-selling nameplate in automotive history. And with good reason: This is the quintessential economy car. It's small, inexpensive, fuel-efficient and reliable. Put gas in it, give it the occasional oil change and it will provide dependable transportation well past the 100,000-mile mark. That's why more than 200,000 Americans, from high schoolers to retirees, buy Corollas every year.
Since its 1968 introduction in the U.S., the Toyota Corolla has come in a variety of body styles, including sedan, coupe, hatchback and wagon. The current car, which is available only in sedan form, is larger, heavier and more expensive than early models, but still provides most of the usual benefits of Corolla ownership, along with a substantially more refined driving experience. However, the competition has caught up to the Corolla or even passed it, with several fellow economy sedans offering a more pleasant and/or sporty driving experience, more features for your money and better build quality. The latest Corolla isn't a bad choice, but it's lost some of the luster that made it history's best-selling nameplate. Older, used models are still an
excellent choice for an economy car, however.

Current Toyota Corolla
The Toyota Corolla small sedan is available in three trim levels: base, LE and S. Base models are reasonably well-equipped but lack power accessories, which the LE model adds. The S model features various sporty touches such as alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and a body kit. All Corollas come with a 1.8-liter, 132-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic.
The Toyota Corolla mostly aims to please the average consumer. Ride quality is smooth and quiet, while the car's handling is adequate but uninspired. This trend continues in the cabin, where there's nothing flashy about the design. Materials quality is only average for this class; however, the control layout is as simple and organized as they come. There's ample room in the backseat.
In reviews, we've been disappointed with the current Toyota Corolla. Competitors from Chevrolet, Honda, Hyundai and Mazda outdo it in most regards, specifically in the areas of interior quality, value and driving pleasure/confidence. In a consumer comparison test where we invited six regular Americans to test several competitors in this class, the Corolla finished dead last and was deemed a disappointment by most.
Used Toyota Corolla Models
The current Toyota Corolla represents the 10th generation, which debuted for the 2009 model year. It's not longer or taller than the previous-generation Corolla, but it is a little wider, which creates additional hip- and shoulder room. If you're shopping for a Corolla from this time period, you might encounter the Corolla XRS and XLE trim levels sold for 2009 and '10. The sportier XRS came with a 2.4-liter engine good for 158 hp, while the luxury-themed XLE came with a nicer interior and available leather upholstery. The only other item of note would be stability control; it didn't become standard equipment until 2010.
The ninth-generation Toyota Corolla was produced from 2003-'08 and came in CE, S, LE and XRS trim levels. The CE was a basic economy car but came with essentials like air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat and a CD player. The Corolla S offered a few more conveniences, while adding a lower body kit, rear spoiler and smoked headlamps for a faux sport sedan look. The LE did away with the sporty add-ons in favor of a more upscale feel -- it was the one to get if you wanted faux wood interior trim. Finally, there was the XRS, the only truly sporty member of the Toyota Corolla family. In addition to all the cosmetic touches from the S model, the XRS had a more powerful engine, a firmer suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and alloy wheels.
For power, the CE, S and LE had a 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated for 126 hp. This doesn't sound like a lot, but the ninth-generation Corolla got around well for a car in this class, providing solid highway acceleration. The XRS, which was only produced for 2004 and '05, had a higher-revving 1.8-liter four good for 164 hp. Acceleration was definitely quicker, but many consumers would probably find the engine's peaky power delivery annoying in everyday traffic. Additionally, the XRS was only available with a manual transmission, whereas other Corollas could be equipped with a manual or automatic.
Changes to the ninth-generation Corolla were limited but possibly significant for used-car shoppers. Notably, side curtain airbags, stability control and a JBL audio system were all newly available for the '05 model year. In reviews at the time, we noted that this Corolla offered a smooth and quiet ride but uninspiring handling. There was nothing flashy about the cabin's design, but materials quality was very high for this class of car. There was ample room in the backseat, but the driving position was awkward.
The eighth-generation Toyota Corolla was sold from 1998-2002. Besides being a good choice from a reliability and fuel-economy standpoint, this Corolla is an excellent used-car buy if safety is a priority -- it was the first low-priced compact sedan to offer side airbags as an option back in 1998. All Corollas from this era were sedans, and all had a 1.8-liter four-cylinder. Acceleration was solid, though we'd advise you to avoid base models equipped with the archaic three-speed automatic transmission (either VE or CE, depending on the model year). Ride comfort and materials quality were also strengths; a cramped backseat was the major negative.
The seventh generation covers the years 1993-'97. Similar in size and personality to its successor, this Corolla was powered by a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine. Horsepower output was anywhere from 100 to 115, depending on the model year and emissions equipment. Dual front airbags were standard in all years, except 1993. A wagon version was available from 1993-'96.
Sixth-generation Corollas sold from 1988-'92 were much smaller and boxier, although the lineup was considerably more varied. In addition to the plain-Jane sedan, there was a sporty GTS coupe with a high-revving four-cylinder rated for as much as 130 hp (an impressive number at the time). An all-wheel-drive "All-Trac" wagon was also available.
One thing to keep in mind if you're shopping for a Toyota Corolla sedan from most of these generations is that GM sold an identical model called the Prizm under the Chevrolet and Geo brands. Depreciation was always higher on this car, meaning that you can buy a used one for less than you'd pay for the Toyota version.

called FT-86 II. They say it is closer to the final design the next Toyota sports car, which is perhaps a new Supra. Based on what we can see a teaser shot of the car has significant differences in the first FT-86.

The original FT-86 is 4,160 mm long, 1760 mm wide and 1,260 mm high with a wheelbase of 2,570 mm, which gives the feeling that is compact, easy to use for the driver, while for four occupants. The grounds for the order should remain the same int the FT-86 II, but less dramatic and more designwise ready for initial production of the car.

Toyota has more than 50 year history of creating exciting sports cars, and this new concept reflects the passion born of companies for driving sports cars. We hope they give this car the right engine and not fall into the same trap that the hybrid Honda CR-Z.

The Prius is the second ‘real’ hybrid to make it to our shores after Honda’s Civic Hybrid. The Prius has also been possibly the one real success story in the world of Hybrids and has adorned many a Hollywood celebrity’s driveway. But just how good is it in the Indian context and will it have any takers? To settle this question in our minds and to tell you a little more about this popular ‘green’ automobile, we took the Prius for a short drive so we could bring you this first-hand driving impression of the Prius right here in India.

This third-generation Toyota Prius was launched in India during the Auto Expo’10 held earlier this year - in January 2010. The new generation Prius has undergone some minor aerodynamic changes to further enhance the efficiency of the car. It is about four inches longer than the outgoing car and Toyota’s chief designer Wahei Hirai penned in the so-called ‘Aero-corners’ at the front and rear – which in common man’s speak is sharp corners. These help make the airflow cleaner and reduces turbulence. Add to this more aerodynamically friendly lines and you’ve achieved a co-efficient of drag to 0.25 from 0.26. This makes it one of the most aerodynamic sedans currently being sold across the globe (the other one that’s on sale in India is the Mercedes Benz E350). This might not sound much, but when we consider the fact that it’s a hybrid with its sole purpose being fuel efficiency, every small step towards this ‘green’ goal counts. However with our chaotic traffic and much lower cruising speeds than on most freeways abroad, one will really have to see whether there are any real benefits of all the aerodynamic wizardry that have gone into the new Prius.

The Toyota Prius is quite futuristic looking, and can be spotted amongst a crowd of regular cars. It has a small front grille and the current generation Prius wears a bolder Toyota badge on its hood when compared to the outgoing variant. The front now wears a very family-face and is unmistakably a Toyota. However, there’s an uncanny resemblance to the Honda Insight (See Pics) and we’re not getting into the who-copied-whom debate. (Who knows, the Japs may actually be churning both cars out of the same factory to reduce development and production costs!) The Toyota Prius looks like a compact sedan, but when you step into the car, your opinion changes immediately. There’s just so much of space! The engineers at Toyota have truly utilized space as effectively as possible and it shows. The huge dash, the flowing centre console theme and the blue on black information display gives it a spaceship-like feel and the Heads-Up display just adds to the overall tech-character of the car. It’s isn’t nearly as clear in bright sunlight (which we seem to have no shortage of!) and works really well in lower light conditions. We also loved the touch sensitive (Touch Tracer in Toyota speak) steering mounted controls which detect touch and immediately project an image of the controls on the display so you can keep your eyes on the road and yet know exactly what button you are pushing – a brownie point in the safety book. Also adding to the safety quotient of the Prius is its excellent structural integrity that helps it absorb impacts fairly well. And to reinforce this fact, the Prius made it to third spot for the safest cars of 2009 in the EuroNCAP tests.

News about the launch of the Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel had been floating around for awhile. However, it is only now that Toyota Kirloskar has finally brought in the Corolla Altis Diesel. The Toyota Corolla Altis (The tenth-generation Corolla, project named E140) now comes with a 1.4-litre common rail diesel engine that produces 87bhp. The Toyota Corolla Altis sold in other Asian markets, is also powered by the same 1.4-litre D4-D engine that churns out similar power.

If you look at the car from the outside, the only features that differentiate the Corolla Altis Diesel from its petrol sibling are the new black honeycomb-mesh front grille and the D4-D badge at the rear. Step inside the Corolla Altis Diesel and you will find that the dash is finished in matt-silver with the centre console in grey with wooden trim. Our press demonstrator was a top-of-the-line variant, (GL), which came with all the bells and whistles such as the in-dash six-CD changer audio system, which we liked quite a lot, except for the fact that it took a little too long for our liking to change audio tracks. The other things which we liked about the car were the steering mounted audio controls and the fact that the music system came with a remote (giving easy access to your music system while driving or being driven) and the four-spoke steering wheel with leather and wood finish which enhanced the car’s appeal. The other features with which the Toyota Corolla Altis GL comes loaded with, include seven-spoke alloy wheels, automatic H.I.D. headlamps with retractable washers, vanity mirror with lighting and safety features such as dual-airbags and ABS with EBD. We sorely missed cruise control on the car though.

Introduction:
The Land Cruiser is the oldest Toyota model to be on sale half-a-century after it was launched. The first generation Land Cruiser - the Toyota BJ was launched in 1951, in 1956 it became the first mass produced Toyota to be exported from Japan. Back then the Toyota BJ was powered by a 3.4-litre six cylinder engine. Every newer generation of the Land Cruiser kept growing larger than the previous, the latest and newest being the eighth generation Land Cruiser 200 series.
Design/Styling:
The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series is based on the Lexus LX platform, “it retains many design characteristics of the older generation”, said Chief Engineer Sadayoshi Koyari, who designed this SUV.

The Land Cruiser’s large front end gets a sprawling grille with horizontal chrome slats proudly wearing the Toyota badge. The large bulging head lamps extend to the fender blending well with the rectangular fog lamps and clamshell hood. The side profile of the Land Cruiser is flanged by the large greenhouse, strong shoulder line and 18-inch tyres. The faint swage line, the well-chiseled rocker and the thick D-pillar add to the rugged look of the Land Cruiser. The small tail lamps somehow look like they were added as an afterthought with a wide rear protruding bumper and a spoiler on the tail gate.
Toyota has retained the body on frame design for its Land Cruiser and stuck to the basics to build an all new chassis for the Land Cruiser. High tensile steel has been used to reduce the weight of the frame and hydro-form technology to increase the rigidity.

Toyota, one of the world’s largest car maker spent over five years to design a car which could favour Indian conditions and clientele alike. After over two lakh kilometres of testing in various Indian conditions the Etios was launched on December 1, 2010. This is Toyota’s first major product for India, designed for the emerging economies of the world.
We got the first glimpse of the Etios at the 2010 Auto Expo held in New Delhi, when Toyota unveiled the sedan and the hatchback version to the world. This car has been propositioned to help Toyota penetrate deeper into the Indian car market and maybe even become segment leader. So, how impressive is the Toyota Etios? We find out as we drive one.

The Etios is based on Toyota’s EFC platform (Emerging market Frontier Concept) and is Toyota’s first low cost car for India. The Etios may not be drool worthy but it does sport a basic yet efficient design. The front grille of the Etios resembles that of the Innova and it looks well-integrated with the headlamps. The simple hood and bumper design, and the chrome lip (which goes missing on the base model) make the smiling grille more prominent.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor registered a growth of 41% as they saw they sold 9726 units in March. The growth was largely driven by the sales of the Etios with 3257 units sold in Mar 2011.
The order booking for the Etios continues to be high with 29796 bookings received so far. The company has been able to stream line the deliveries of the Etios and has been successful in delivering the cars as fast as possible. The Liva being next in line, Toyota will be looking at crossing the 10,000 units a month sales figure soon.

Toyota registers a growth of 24% this May

Toyota Kirloskar Motor registered sales of 7470 units in May 2011. The company sales grew by 24% when compared to the corresponding period last year. Etios sold 3412 units in May 2011.
Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director, Marketing, TKM said, “The actual impact of the suspension of production is seen in the drop in sales in May. The production was back to full swing from 20th May onwards, much earlier than expected. We are now back on track and are all set to launch the Etios Liva. With the increase in Etios production, we would like to bring down the waiting period to one month before we launch Liva. The launch will be as per schedule in the last week of June”.

The 2012 model that is being launched later in the year will change a little what we expect of both brands.

For the first time in my driving life I do not have a Toyota in my pool of cars. Before you consider that vain, only two cars make that pool. It was upstaged by the diminutive and practical Mazda Demio that outdid the Toyota Spacio and Vitz in the value for money. I hoped that I would migrate to Subaru but that was not to be.

But in the future, near or far, a Toyota and Subaru will find way back into the stable. What model will that be? I decided to do some research and find out what is out there. Will it will be the little Yaris Concept, Prius or perhaps the smaller and efficient Electric FT – EV II?
