Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

The Review | Swanning into Mecca with a buildup of excitement to buy some goodies I came across the new Born This Way Foundation by Too Faced. I'd heard raving reviews about it online, I decided to get colour matched and add it to the pile of goods. Naturally I had high expectations for this 30ml gem.

Price | $58, 30ml

Upon first swatch I notice the foundation feels very creamy, like a light moisturiser. It's very moisturizing and looks very natural. It isn't dewy but does give a lovely natural healthy glow to the skin. If you have oily skin I suggest using a primer such as Hourglass Mineral Veil or something mattifying which you're comfortable with as this foundation doesn't hold up too well in a very oily t-zone. Skin prep is the key to a good makeup routine.
Use a reliable powder such as NARS Translucent Pressed powder or Rimmel Stay Matte to set the t-zone and prevent creasing around the mouth, although dryer skin types could probably get away with no powder or a light dusting.

The undertones are very golden, not quite yellow and more on the neutral side. I find foundations can become too pink on my paler skin and when tanned I end up looking a little too yellow throughout the day. I was colour matched to Warm Nude, a neutral light golden shade which suits my green and yellow undertones. It didn't oxodise throughout the day, in fact it looks almost the exact same after five to seven hours of wear. Due to the golden base of the foundation I'm not sure very pale (porcelain) skin will find a light enough shade to match.

Cons | Oily skin will have issues on the t-zone without a primer and powder. It also settles into fine lines, avoid the under eye area unless you want some serious creasing. Paler skin tones might not find their perfect match.

Pros | Leaves skin looking naturally moisturized and healthy. Buildable medium to full coverage. Glides over pores and has a great coverage. Doesn't congest the pores and looks natural and even. Once removed your skin will feel soft and hydrated.

Who Will It Suit | Any skin type, more suited to dry skin but I have oily skin and the only issue was not powdering enough on the t-zone

Effaclar Duo + ACNE Prone Skin

I've had acne since puberty, I'd never really had much of a breakout apart from recurring spots around 'that time of the month' until about 18 months ago when my skin had a huge hormonal breakout.

BEFORE

I felt like I tried every skincare product on the market, some products helped keep the acne at bay but nothing seemed to have a dramatic impact. My skin was sore, I could barely sleep because it was so uncomfortable. I was embarrassed of my skin, I didn't want to leave the house without packing on copious amounts of makeup.

After watching countless "How I Cleared My Acne" Videos and reading hundreds of blog posts about skincare I felt like I'd lost all hope with my skin. I started to hear about La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo [+] and it's almost miracle working properties. Priceline had a skincare sale on, I figured I'd give it a go - what would I lose? $27.95? Peanuts compared to many of the products I've already tried.

Four Week Progression

In four weeks I went from the picture on the left, to the picture on the right (taken Monday of this week). FOUR WEEKS!! My skin hasn't completely cleared, and now that my period is almost due I've had a mini breakout but it's nothing compared to my skin four weeks ago!

I use Effaclar Duo + every night after I wash my face, and as of last week after I apply the Micellar water on a cotton round. I've noticed an improvement on acne scarring and congestion throughout my T zone. My sensitive skin is no longer sore and irritated, Effaclar Duo + hasn't dried out my skin either it helps keep balance and oil production has normalised.

How to Relax

School, University, Work. It's all underway. One thing we forget to do for ourselves is relax and take time out to think of our mental health and reflect.

Here are five tips to destress and relax.

Bath. How original.. I'm not deleting this one though. You might not be the bath type which is understandable because I didn't think I was until our shower exploded and now we're left with daily bathing until it's all fixed up. I find sitting in a bath a little boring, but soothing at the same time. I've had time to think, I've thought up a few video ideas in the bath recently. Sometimes I'll watch a Casey Neistat vlog in the bath (electronics not advisable near water). It's a great way to relax in a mountain of bubbles and stare at the ceiling, or your new winter belly, and reflect on the day. Feeling inspired.

Walk. Honestly exercise is just as important in your well being as water and food. Thirty minutes a day walking around the lake, or through a meadow of cows (I live in the middle of nowhere) really gets my day off to a positive start. The sun might be shining and vitamin D is essential for general function. It's not about losing weight, but you might find that you do, but about a clear and positive mind set. Think of it as literally walking into a positive day, you'll never wake up on the wrong side of the bed again (not guaranteed, but there will be less bad days).

Crafts. Create something with your hands. Even if you're as crap at making things as I am. I'm the 20+ big kid who somehow hot glued their trousers to their shoulder, true story. Scroll through Pinterest and find something to create, something super simple with materials you probably already have. There is a satisfaction, and a welcome distraction, when one builds something from scraps. Promise not to use this as a procrastination method.. Those emails will have to be answered eventually.

Write. We might not all be as talented a writer as J.K Rowling, I'm surely not, but I find simply writing down how I'm feeling or just recapping the day helps me re-evaluate and reflect on the day/week I've had. Sometimes what seems uncontrollable and too hard to handle might just not be once we write down and have a little think about it all.

Top Autumn Lipstick Shades

It's Autumn! Our favourite time of the year as the weather is almost perfect (for us) and the days aren't boiling hot, it's almost time to spark up the wood fire and pull out the Winter woolies. Although the weather can be unpredictable around the months of March, April and May your makeup doesn't have to be. We want to share our top lipstick shades for Autumn.

It's Berry Nice; Chi Chi have it down when it comes to creamy matte lipsticks. The cooler weather can dry out your skin and welcome chapped lips. The Viva La Diva range are creamy and hydrating, yet matte! These richly coloured lipstick contain Beeswax, Vitamin E, Calendula, Evening Primrose and Jojoba Oils. It's a concoction for luscious lips which will glide on with ease. Pictured is the colour 'Turn Me On'. I'm obsessed with darker lips throughout the cooler months, obviously as the weather chills our makeup and fashion palettes become darker and more defined. I love pairing a berry lip with colour blocking, try an all white outfit with a pop of 'Turn Me On' on the lips and a thick pair of shades (those UV's don't stop in Autumn).

Revlon Super Lustrous in Berry Couture is an amazing berry shade for those who enjoy the purples of Autumn. I can compare the range to MAC's Glaze in how it applies, they feel and look very similar. You can get away with one coat for a tint to the lips or apply a fuller coverage and get a more rich application. I adore berry shades, I find they suit just about everyone and if you choose one with blue tones it alludes that your teeth are whiter (tricky). It doesn't just resembled the texture of a glaze, it stays for hours and is very hydrating on the lips.

MAC It Out: My MAC lipstick collection consists mostly of darker colours, I went through a faze. Lustres are my favourite MAC lipstick formula, they're not as opaque as the Amplified range but they still pack a punch.

Last Winter I purchased the colour 'Spice It Up!' - partly because it reminds me of Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls, just me? It's more of a muddy nude/cinnamon colour, the formula is glossy and hydrating. The Lustre range doesn't last very long but it's perfect if you're okay with reapplying for moisture purposes throughout the day.

I had my eye on Hot Tahiti for months before I purchased it. It's not glossy, but it's not matte. Think of a glazed ham.. this is a pinker version, texture and all. I suppose that's why it's part of the 'Glaze' collection at MAC. Hot Tahiti is the all round colour, all day, all night and all year. It's not limited to Saturday nights, I adore wearing this to Sunday brunches or even the office. It's surprisingly long wearing for a glaze, I was under the impression it wouldn't last an hour! It proved me wrong and the colour lasted well over 3 hours between my morning coffee and onto Lunch where I had to reapply.

Looking for something more Amplified? See what I did there. From the Amplified range I choose 'Dubonnet'. This applies similar Chi Chi's 'Turn Me On'. It's much more creamy and applies smoothly. I am fascinated by this dark burgundy brick wall colour. I haven't had problems with it bleeding on my lips and it's very opaque. If you have pale skin, red hair and trouble finding something which doesn't clash I suggest testing Dubonnet out because it looks amazing on me when I'm not tanned (I don't have red hair, I have Auburn accents to my hair). Dubonnet wears off somewhat evenly, it doesn't leave that 'ring' around the lip line at least. I find it lasts at least four hours (drinking through a straw on a Saturday night) before you need to reapply.

Reds For Richies: On a budget buy check out the ELF Matte Lip Color Collection, they have a range of colours and I now own them all if you would like a full review on the collection. Pictured is Rich Red, the packaging isn't crash hot and this lipstick has already broken inside the tube so it falls out sometimes. Having mentioned that the product is awesome. It's a vibrant, opaque red which lasts over three hours on me. I like to take these out clubbing with me as they're only $3 (iHerb.com) and it doesn't matter if they get lost. As it's like a pencil it's easy to apply without having to line the lips first. It dries matte but doesn't last through dinner, it does last longer if you drink through a straw and don't eat - so the perfect after dinner Saturday night lip.

My first Cargo lip gloss. I'm not a huge fan of lipglosses as they are sticky and way too glossy, they remind me of those makeup kits you got at Christmas when you were younger (great then, not so much now in my 20's). These ones aren't bad though, slightly sticky and slightly glossy but not unmanageable. The only good thing about sticky gloss is that it stays for ages! Cargo have worked out how to make it more long wearing and less hair sticking to your face in the wind. Cross between a red and berry the shade 'Paris' has become a daily favourite of mine. Usually I pair it with the ELF Matte Lip to darken it up, or on top of Berry Couture for a more intense colouring.

If you struggle with dark lipstick application try using a pencil/lip brush (or something small and precise) to line the lips and then fill in the lips with the product. If you end up outside the lip line just clean it up with a little concealer.

Current Daily Makeup Routine

I've been having a minimal cystic acne breakout recently so I've upped my makeup routine in the past few weeks. Usually I would go bare faced most days, but I don't like the stares and odd comments I've gotten recently. I think I have a pretty flawless result using these drugstore beauties!

My acne is under the skin and isn't really that bad so the Maybelline Dream Wonder Fluid Touch foundation does an excellent job at covering the slight discolouration, it does oxidize slightly. Pictured wearing the lightest shade. I apply lightly with my fingers and build up the coverage.

Australis Primer is a amazing for everyday use prior to foundation, I try to stay away from excessive use of silicone based primers as they can enlarge and clog pores.

Maybelline's Better Skin Concealer is a godsend for those bad skin days, or weeks in my case. It is lightweight but covers perfectly. Under my eyes I rid those dark circles with Covergirl's Ready, Set, Gorgeous! concealer in the lightest shade.

I set my under eyes, the T-zone and concealed spots with Maybelline Matte Maker Pressed Powder, it's a good colour match for pale skin tones and great for combination skin.

I run through my brows with NYX Cake Brow Powder in Blonde and set with Maybelline Brow Drama in Dark Brown (slightly too dark for me but I enjoy a darker brow with a clean makeup look).

Add a pop of colour to the apples of the cheeks with Maybelline FIT Me Blush in Medium Pink. To get that glow apply ELF Blush in Gotta Glow on the high points on the face, the cheekbones and brow bone mostly.

I use a mixture of shades in the NYX Love In Paris Merci Beaucoup Palette on my lids, I tend to apply the light beige all over the lid (picture: top left corner), run through the crease with the matte brown (picture: middle left side), and sometimes blend together using the salmon pink (picture: middle right side).

Apply Revlon Grow Luscious Plumping Mascara liberally to the top and bottom lashes. I like to line and fill in my lips with ELF Lip Matte Color in Natural and apply Cargo's Dubai over the top. Sometimes I'll add NYX Butter Gloss in Tiramisu on top. Ta-da! A natural and well covered face which takes 5-10 minutes to apply.

Have you got a growing collection of one particular brand?

Mine is MAC Lipsticks. Most of mine have been purchased from the USA and some have been discontinued, such as Naked Bud - my favourite. The downside to loving high end (ish) makeup brands is that you pay an arm and a leg per product, $36 for one lipstick in Australia or $16 in the USA. I adore all of these shades, you have to be committed when spending the moolah you do on these babies. The pigmentation of MAC lipsticks are incredible and they're so creamy and soft to apply.

How To Stick To Your Resolutions

Think small, you want to lose some weight? Don't feel like you need to overhaul your entire diet and exercise regime (or lack there of) on the 1st. Take baby steps. Add more leafy greens and choose water over soda. Take the stairs instead of the lift, get off the bus a few stops early and walk to your destination. Make a goal to walk certain days of the week. Say, Monday I am going to walk 5kms after work, and stick to it.

Break down your resolutions and take steps to achieve them. Make it easier. No body is expected to become an entirely different person over night, that's impossible.

One of my goals is to blog more, I downloaded the blogger iPhone app and when ever I think of a blog idea I write it down in either the app or in a notebook which my sister bought me for Christmas. So far so good.

Enjoy 2015! Make it your year. I have a good feeling about this year.

Canberra Bus Depot Markets

If you're greeted at the entrance of a venue by a small mobile cafe serving a large coffee for $3.90, you know it's going to be a good day.

Family and I ordered our cafe lattes, grabbed a table in the sun and sat waiting for the rest of the clan to turn up. Gorgeous day, sun is shining and it's 26 degrees in Canberra.

Once everyone arrived we headed inside the market space, it's a huge 'shed' or warehouse style building which used to house buses.. hence the name. The building is old, brick and beautiful. To be honest I am sad I didn't get more photographs of the building itself.

Bus Depot Markets sell anything from musical instruments, to candles, artworks, household decor, food and there is always good live music on both levels. If you're looking for extra presents, or something to see in the Canberra area on a lazy Sunday I highly recommend these markets in Kingston.

Desire Clothing UK

Recommended by Helen Melon Lady. They have an array of cute and quirky womens clothing, accessories and shoes ranging from $15 - $70. They're UK based but postage is reasonable to Australia (last order $15 on a $130 purchase).

Cotton On

An Australian store where I buy most of my basics, and a lot of seasonal clothes. I tend to buy cheaper clothes because my fashion sense changes so rapidly and I get bored with clothes easily.. I'm a horrible person I know.

ebay

Don't forget ebay and the plethora of bargains to be found. Although I can't always buy a lot of the Asian clothing I like because, well.. boobage issues, I can still update my wardrobe with pretty much anything I can think of. I get a lot of my film/photography and DIY equipment from there too. Check out my Spring Inspiration Collection (each photo has a link to the item).

Crush Cosmetics (AU)

I may or may not have a Crush Cosmetics Haul video uploaded.. it's an Australian site where you are able to purchase hard to find cult favourite cosmetics Australian beauties are in need of. Purchase brands such as Sleek, NYX, Sugar Pill, Too Faced, Lime Crime, Jordana and more. They don't have a huge range from every brand but they're working on it. Price wise it is Australia and we are paying for the fact we're a million miles from the US/Europe so it's expected we pay more than they do, although I don't think they're over-priced (same prices as Target/Kmart).

MUA Makeup Up Academy

MUA are a UK brand that supply decent quality products for super cheap prices, their £1 lipsticks are my favourite from this brand. They post worldwide, their postal times vary as I have had orders range from two-eight weeks - it just depends. If you're just starting out in makeup or want budget friendly products which do a some-what decent job than I recommend these for sure. A few of their products have ended up on my favourites lists lately.
