ASUU Meeting not yet in perfect conclusion

In the news gathered today that the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, National Executive Council, weekend, met in Kano.

However, at the end of the meeting, lecturers were not forthcoming with the outcome, which sources say was borne out of the promise made to President Goodluck Jonathan by the union to inform him of its decision before going public.

It was learnt that the NEC meeting which attracted ‘fair representation’ from over 50 universities was held at Mambayya House.

I also gathered that the lecturers were divided on the issue of suspension of the over 5months strike.

The State Security Service on Wednesday in Abuja paraded an assistant lecturer in Arabic and Islamic studies at the Kogi State University, Ayingba, Muhammad Yunus, for recruiting and coordinating a Boko Haram terror cell in Kogi State.

The service said Yunus, who is the spiritual leader, runs a terror group which comprised Umar Musa, head of operations/ instructor; Mustapha Yusuf (aka Habib); armourer/chief courier, Ismaila Abdulazeez, a foot soldier; and Ibrahim Isah (a.k.a one in town), who is also a foot soldier.

SSS Deputy Director, Media and Public Relations, Marilyn Ogar, while briefing newsmen, explained that the terror cell planned to launch attacks in Kogi State before they were apprehended.

She explained that until his arrest, Yunus had held several preaching sessions every last Saturday and Sunday of the month at Ethnosho Secondary School, Ojiolo, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State where he had about 80 adherents.

Similarly, the suspect held another session every Friday at the Kogi State University mosque, Ayingba, where he had about 120 followers, whom he taught the virtues of Jihad and the sanctity of the Sharia law as an alternative form of governance and its entrenchment in the state and beyond.

Ogar said the lecturer, said to be a very active member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in KSU, maintained extensive links with Boko Haram cells in Borno State where he referred some of his followers to terrorist training.

“In March 2013, he facilitated the trip of two of his adherents to Boko Haram’s Sambisa Camp in Maiduguri, Bornu State where they received training in weapon handling. They are Mustapha Yusuf and Ismaila Abdulazeez who are now under arrest. They were able to escape and returned back to him in August 2013, following the military invasion of the camp,” she said.

The SSS spokesperson said Yunus holds a Masters degree from the University of Jos and a Ph.D in Arabic and Islamic Studies from KSU, in 2012.

Yunus denied being a Boko Haram member when questioned by journalists, but his claim was punctured by Yusuf, Abdulazeez and Isah who insisted that he had been teaching them about Jihad and how to exploit it to instal Sharia in Kogi State.

Yunus, who admitted knowing his accomplices, alleged that he was set up, adding that Islam which he preached, did not endorse blood-shedding.

“I don’t have any link with Boko Haram, in fact I preached against them, that is why they have set me up. You can go to Jos and ask for my tapes, I preached against them. Islam doesn’t support blood-shedding and I don’t support it too,” he said.

One of the suspects, Isah said he was in company with Umar and Abdulazeez on their way to Maiduguri, Bornu State for training when they were arrested at a mosque in Zuba, near Abuja.

Abdulazeez said he was indoctrinated by Yusuf in Nyanya, Abuja and he subsequently travelled to Ayingba to see Yunus who directed him to go with Isah to Maiduguri, but their trip was aborted by their arrest.

Meanwhile, arraignment of a suspected Boko Haram member, Abdulmanam Abidiki, could not hold on Wednesday due to the absence of his defence lawyer.

Before you proceed please read the following instructions carefully on NDA Requirements for Online Application For Admission into 66th Regular Course.

Only candidates who meet the JAMB national cut-off mark will be eligible to sit for the NDA Entrance Examination at their Examination Centre of choice.

To be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy a candidate (Males and Females) must have the following:

Minimum of 5 credit passes at SSCE (WAEC or NECO) or GCE O Level or Grade II Teachers Certificate obtained in not more than 2 sittings, relevant to the Faculty of their choice.
Credit in English Language and Mathematics
At least one supporting relevant credit to the compulsory credits in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Faculty of Science. However, only one supporting relevant credit is required in the Faculty of Engineering.
Be at least 17 years old and not more than 21 years old at the time of entry into the Academy. Note that Nigerian Airforce candidates must be between 17 and 18 years old at entry.
Must not be less than 1.68 metres tall for male and 1.62 metres for female.
Must be medically and physically fit and must be of good moral character.
Must be single male or female without legal obligation to support any child or other individuals.
Present a Certificate of Origin obtained from a Local Government and a Certificate of State Indigeneship from the Office of the State Governor is desirable.
Furthermore, candidates are to note the following:
1. Awaiting results are not qualified. Results not submitted with application form will not be accepted.
2. Only examination results of 5 years from date taken will be accepted.

SALE OF APPLICATION FORMS
This is to inform the general public that online application for admission into the 66th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna will be available for sale from 1st November 2013 to 28th February 2014. Admission into NDA is open to both MALE and FEMALE Nigerians. Upon purchase of Access or PIN Codes, prospective candidates should follow the link on the NDA official website www.nda.edu.ng or log on to the application portal www.ndaapplications.org and complete the online application form.

METHOD OF APPLICATION
Interested candidates are advised to purchase access or PIN codes from any of the branches or cash offices of Zenith Bank Plc nationwide, at the cost of N2,500.00 only, excluding bank charges of N500.00 for an online application. Applicants applying for admission into NDA MUST also apply to the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), and carefully select Nigerian Defence Academy as their choice of university. Such applicants are expected to sit for the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION
Applications should be submitted online. On completion of the online application, candidates are to download an Acknowledgement Form. NATURE AND DURATION OF TRAINING:

Admitted candidates into NDA for the Regular Course will undergo military and academic training as Officer Cadets for a duration of 5 years. On successful completion of training, graduands will earn a university first degree (BSc, BEng, BA) and a commission into the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

ADMINISTRATION:
Regular Course cadets will train at NDA Permanent Site, Kaduna. Cadets will be kitted, accommodated and fed at Federal Government expense throughout the duration of training. Officer Cadets will also receive a monthly allowance for general upkeep.

UNILAG: Registration of New Students (UTME & Direct Entry) To Commence November 18, 2013

The Admissions Unit of the University of Lagos has released the registration schedule and procedure for candidates (UTME & DIRE CT ENTRY) offered provisional admission to various degree programs for the 2013/2014 Academic Session.

The registration exercise will commence on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. at the Multipurpose Hall, UNILAG, Akoka. The registration schedule and procedure can be found here.

B. Successfully screened candidates should comply with the following steps:

STEP 1: SUBMISSION OF BIODATA

I. Fill IT data capture form;
II. Proceed to Information Technology section;
III. Take digital photo, fingerprint and other mini biodata;
IV. Collect a printed copy of the mini biodata which includes the JAMB registration number, password, surname, course of study, Faculty and passport photograph.

STEP 2: PAYMENT SCHEDULE: Information on this step will be provided at the screening centre.

STEP 3: DEPARTMENTAL REGISTRATION: Candidates are requested to contact their Department for Departmental registration.

STEP 4: FINAL ENROLMENT:
Final enrolment is compulsory for all fully registered students. This will commence on December 2 and end on December 13, 2013. Further information on this step will be provided on this web site. During this stage of the registration exercise, all candidates (UTME/DE) are expected to submit two (2) copies of the following documents to the Registration Officers:

I. Completed and duly signed Students Biodata;
II. Completed and duly signed Students Information Form (SIF); and
III. Payment Acknowledgement Receipt.

PLEASE NOTE THAT:
1. All candidates MUST adhere strictly to the Registration schedule/time table and procedure.

2. Impersonation is a serious offence and anybody found guilty of this offence will have the offer of provisional admission automatically withdrawn; further to which the person will be handed over to the police/law enforcement agent.

3. Candidates must have attained the age of sixteen (16) by October, 2013 to be eligible for registration.

4.The mode of dressing is formal and candidates not properly dressed will not be attended to.

5. Parents/guardians/members of staff not connected with registration are not expected at the venue of the registration exercise.

- Click on Supplementary admission Portal Link
- Log in with your UTME registration Number and PIN
- Fill the Supplementary admission form and upload a recent passport size photograph (scanned) with red background
- Submit the online supp. admission form and print out.

Note:
1. The same passport used for the online registration will be used during the screening and registration after offer of admission.
2. No complaint of wrong Bio-Data or blank picture will be entertained after submission.
3. Candidates who up-load wrong Bio-Data will be automatically disqualified.

E-facility card has the name implies is a card produced and introduced by the Joint Admissions And Matriculation Board, JAMB for various purposes.
