GetBlued's video tribute to the seniors this year played one of my favorite songs on the piano, "River Flows in You" by the great Yiruma. They said it was suppose to be "Bella's Lullaby" in Twilight. But I guess the producers didn't like it or something. Anyway, I recorded myself playing this song for Shaun for Valentine's day last 2009. He likes it when I play the piano for him that's why I decided to dedicate this to him before. It's not as good as the original (of course) but I tried my best. hehe. And here it is! Enjoy! :)

BUCKETLIST: MAKE A DIFFERENCE - CHECK!

I was really bored yesterday and I decided to browse through Yahoo! Answers for interesting questions and whatnot. But then I came across this alarming question from a 12 year old girl (posted just seconds before I read it):

And even though I never participated in Yahoo! Answers, I just really felt inclined to respond to her. I thought that maybe, just maybe, she will read my answer and change her mind about things. What if no one answered her and she just took her life right there and then? So I took a shot and this is what I wrote:

And to my surprise this morning, she actually chose my answer as the best answer! I was just so happy that she said my response really helped her. I made a difference in someone's life. That made my day! :)

Even though she still had unresolved questions (read below "Asker's Rating:"), I hope she follows my advice and just put her trust in God. My screen name was "BIF" and I'm sure the DWTL people knows that that stands for!

HELLO! I want to keep using this blog but since JTA is sadly over, I'll just post more personal stuff here! I'll start with a Fiona cheat-sheet! There are the things people might want to know about me and what I have recently discovered about myself. I decided to do this because... I'm bored and I just feel like sharing myself to the world. haha! Enjoy!

4. I've always wanted to be like Britney Spears (before she got messed up). Then, I wanted to be a scientist. (but look at my course now.. haha!)
5. I absolutely love flowers! Just looking at them makes me happy!
6. I seem to have an affinity for water... I love rainy days so much too!
7. I'm a very OC person. I can't stand disorder and mess.
8. I prefer to date older guys (but I'd have to cap that to around 8 years) because immaturity turns me off.
9. I sneeze or have colds almost every single day (allergic rhinitis)
10. I can't sleep without taking a bath first
11. I love anything glittery/shiny! Anything!
12. Nature-lover. Mmmm.. (~_~)
13. I have a strong faith (I think I do anyway)
14. I am very fickle minded especially when it comes to shopping.

REFLECTION PAPER - JTA

My JTA stay in San Francisco has taught me so much things and Armand was right, it made me a better person and it made me discover who I really am. I not only learned how to survive by myself or cook or use public transportation but I gained insights and views on life that staying in Ateneo or in the Philippines would not give me. I know I gave up so much for this, but it's all worth it. My family said they were proud of me. Shaun said he was proud of me. Well, you know what, I am proud of myself too.

I remember that very day my family brought me to the airport, there was a minute there I regretted joining JTA and I didn't want to leave the Philippines, in all honesty. I wanted to stay because I was afraid of what is to come. I was afraid of being all alone in a country that I have never visited all my life. I was afraid of not having a rock, my family, there to tell me what to do or to run to in times of need. I was afraid of not having any friends because of the different culture. I was afraid I am going to starve to death (or gain so much weight because of eating take-outs) because I never cooked at home. I was afraid of getting lost or just being stuck at the apartment 'cause I never commuted, I never ventured out or went to places alone. Living a very sheltered life at home did not give me enough life experiences, I guess. That's why I was afraid of so many things; because I never was alone, or shall I say, I never was this independent. But this experience made me taste what life was truly about, or the good side of life anyway. I know it was easy cause I had instant money, I didn't have to work and money was always there, but nonetheless, I learned a lot. I was able to cook food on my own (and Shaun said they were good too, yay! haha!), I was able to ride the buses and go to the malls alone, to go shopping at my own leisure and time and to even watch a movie I wanted. I was able to make friends from different races and culture but most of all, I was able to experience diversity at its best. I was able to take complete control of my life, and I loved it.

JTA made me taste what life was really about and I have no regrets or whatsoever going here in USF. I know at first I was scared cause USF only had one slot but unlimited tuition paying. I never thought someone would pay to go here but at least someone did. I'm glad Daniel went here cause it helped to have someone with you along the way (though we only got to hang out at the beginning and eventually went with other friends we had). I thought that if we were 4-10 JTA people at USF, it wont be the same. You wont get the same fears I did and would not get the same pleasure of conquering them, of knowing you were able to do it.

Fiona, you were able to do it - these 4 months.

And damn right you should be proud of yourself. It's not the travels, the sights, the new stuff you bought but it is that journey of self-discovery that meant the most to me. Even though JTA ended and I'm back to my old life again, I know I came back a changed person. A changed and more mature person, hungry for life and what the future holds.

I just want to thank God for giving me this opportunity, for my family for allowing me and for all the friends I've made and have helped me go through this along the way (you know who you guys are!). I know I wasn't ready to go, 'cause I honestly didn't want to leave just yet. I wanted a few more weeks or months maybe. But it's time for me to go back to my family I dearly missed so much. This was enough and maybe someday in the future, I might be coming back there. Who knows? But for now, it's a pleasant farewell and thank you.

FOOD TRIP (AGAIN)

I am moving out of my dorm today (Dec 18) and I had to finish all my food before I go, so I had ANOTHER food trip, this time with Shaun, and we tried to finish everything.

Other than that, here are some of the stuff we cooked and other places we went to eat to.

dinner by shaun: pan-roasted potatoes with buttered vegetables and steak diane with homemade mushroom gravy

Fancy night with Shaun! haha! dinner at McCormick & Kuleto's seafood restaurant in Ghirardelli square. this was an amazing appetizer of mango, avocadoes and dungeness crab

I wanted to use my california ID for once, so we ordered a Ghirardelli chocolate martini!

this was fettuccini alfredo with Manila clams (though I must say, the one in Cyma was better)

shaun had pan-friend scallops with pork belly and these sweet small thin carrot-like veggies that I loved

fancy date calls for fancy get-ups. haha!

then dessert at the Ghirardelli cafe. even though it was freezing cold outside, I wanted my ice cream sundae. so here it was. very berry ice cream :P

though I dont have a picture of it, Shaun even rented a beemer for us. Went all out that night. haha! It was very fun and memorable :) Thank you baby! mwah! :*

Shaun came to SF for a week and here are some of the places we went to :)

It was a rainy afternoon and we were walking along Golden Gate Park when it started to rain x.x So we ended up in the Conservatory of Flowers in order to stay dry. haha! It was an amazing greenhouse-like place wherein there were plants everywhere and pretty pretty flowers from different parts of the country.

What is the "Friendship Games"?:
PASA Friendship Games is a highly anticipated event with over 6,000 individuals from over 30 colleges and universities across the nation that come together to play fun, friendly, and competitive picnic games.

Basically, it is where all Fil-Am orgs from all universities gather in one place (California State University, Fullerton) and play some games! It was during Halloween weekend! And it was my first time to ride an airplane ALONE. x.x But it was one of the most memorable experiences I have in my whole JTA stay here in the US. :)

So why not go here to SAN FRANCISCO??? I'll give you 10 good reasons why you should! :>

1. It's cooler. For a change, why not spend a week or two in this type of weather? The sun is warm and the wind is cool. Perfect, just perfect.

2. Ghirardelli Square. Love the chocolates, it's great for pasalubongs too! And did I mention their awesome ice cream sundaes??? There's a good reason why the cafe is always packed with people each and every time right?

3. Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. Street musicians will never fail to impress you. The Ripley's believe it or not museum and 3D glass maze will awe you. We have a wax museum that features a hall of religions, the palace of living art (with a 3D Mona Lisa), a chamber of horrors and much much more!

4. Fun outdoor activities like biking across the Golden Gate Bridge or going for a self-driven tour via renting a small cute Go car (it tells you which streets to turn and what sites you are seeing while driving).

5. The city itself is beautiful. I'm having fun just walking along the streets and seeing different types of buildings; not to mention being able to work out your legs with all those steep hills (which can almost reach a 45 degree angle).

6. Shopping wonderland! Forever 21 has 3 floors and it is just across Gap which is humongous! H&M, Macy's, Victoria's Secret and Pink, Bloomingdales, Barneys, Ross and much much more! If you don't want to go out and shop, then just log on to any computer and do your shopping online! Your clothes (or whatever you bought) will just be delivered in your doorstep within a day or two. Fast, fun and easy.

7. No traffic. Easy public transportation system. Everyone abides by the rules. It's more of an inner-reflectiontype-personal benefit I guess, being able to experience the order of things (for OC people like me, haha!)

8. Awesome mouth-watering food. Big giant juicy burritos (Triple threat at Papalote's) and burgers - most especially the famous In n Out burgers (which I have yet to try). How about the clam chowder everyone's talking about? Or having a different McDonald's menu (no spaghetti, no rice, no chicken, sorry guys)

9. Alcatraz. You can even spend the night there... if you dare. And why not a bay tour too? See the Golden Gate Bridge from another angle and circle around the notoriously known island. If not, then why not travel to other places like LA or Las Vegas or New York or Boston?

10. I'M HERE!!!!! :) :) :)

So grab your friends and family and book the next flight to SFO ok? Then tell me you're coming! haha!

THERE'S A WAR??

Ok, that was my initial reaction when I heard (yes, they were THAT loud) what seemed like fighter planes circling around San Francisco. And this went on with apparently no reason at all. O.o Turns out it was fleet week. And the Blue Angels are here! Everyone was excited but I didn't know what the hype was all about. Turns out the Blue Angels are the US Navy's flight demonstration squadron. They are suppose to be the best of the best of the best and they are going to have a show here. It was awesome how the planes dove straight down from the sky and would turn around and shoot straight up within a few seconds. And how 4 planes would move simultaneously like one body as shown in the video below. We were lucky to be able to see them just from our apartment. So there was no war afterall :P hehe. Thank goodness x.x

Another funny thing happened just before we recorded that. I was in my room studying when all of a sudden our smoke detectors went off! I opened my door and the whole apartment was filled with smoke! I was scared like heck and I thought the apartment was burning! Turns out Moriah, Courtney's roommate left the oven on and burnt her toasts. We were fanning like crazy and opening all the windows of our room. People from across the street were looking at us and smoke was just coming out of our room everywhere. After 20 mins or so, the alarm stopped. Moriah got her toasts and they were as black as charcoal.

So my American house mate Courtney wanted us to make ginataan ('cause she said it was her favorite Filipino food, yeah, she has a Filipino boyfriend) so one Sunday afternoon, we hopped on a bus to an Asian market and bought ingredients for this endeavor. And TADA! here it is!!!

Tita Pining thought it would be proper for my 21st birthday to bring me to a casino. So off we were to Cache Creek Casino! We were there from 9PM until 3AM in the morning.

Tita gave me $20 as good luck money. I earned roughly $20 more in the slot machine but then gambled away $4.60 so this is what was left:

So it is a popular belief back home that you can see the winning lottery number appear on the body of this fish. Look at it for a while and see if you see some numbers magically form :> If you win the lottery, don't forget me okay? :))

A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN

Presenting Ghirardelli Square's CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL!!!
That's right, CHOCOLATE, in FESTIVAL form :>
FESTIVITIES... with CHOCOLATES!
What more can you ask for???

So we paid $20 to have 15 free samples from any booth of our choice. There were A LOT and I mean, A-LOT of people. We had to line up for like 30+ minutes per booth x.x

We tried everything from chocolate-filled mini marshmallows, toffee bars, caramel pistachio popcorn and something called "skinny water" (which was a lot like our "Vit water" in the Philippines). But the Ghirardelli booth was still the best one ('cause we got sooo much chocolates from them, haha!).

We also went inside the famous Ghirardelli cafe where they were selling sundaes and whatnot. There were too many people so we didn't get the chance to try some x.x Oh well, maybe next time! So we just took pictures inside:

BIRTHDAY WEEKEND!

So it was Labor Day here during my birthday. You know what that means, LONG WEEKEND! haha! So here are the things I did during that time:

FRIDAY NIGHT:
Stayed up late to cook Pinoy-style spaghetti with potato mojo's and garlic mayo. I figured this will be my blow-out to my roommates too.

SATURDAY:
Shaun's coming here! But he texted me that his bus broke down somewhere so he arrived later than expected. When he got here, I gave him some food, which I hoped he liked x.x then we checked him in in his hotel. After that, he bought us Mexican food for dinner. Burritos here are AWE-SOME!!! They are big and juicy and saucy and yummy! I promise to post a picture if I eat one again. Then I went back to the dorm. That's it for day 1! :)

SUNDAY:
Went to Stanford with Shaun and Daniel. We also got Boston (that's the name of the car, HAHA), Shaun's rented BMW which the boys were so excited about. But the funny thing was 1. we didn't know how to stop the engine, 2. we didn't know how to open the valve for the gas and 3. we didn't know how to lock the car as soon as we got off it. HAHAHA! I was just laughing so hard when we were just sitting there at the gas station trying to figure out how to get gas in! :)) Daniel was going around the car, looking for a switch or a knob or something and Shaun was reading through the manual and I was just laughing. And the solution? Just push the flap (or I don't know what it was called) of the gas tank and it will automatically open. Great. =))

So off we were! I was the navigator-ish, holding the GPS device and telling them where and when to turn. But somehow, they still don't trust me :| I'M RELIABLE NAMAN EH! ASK MY JTA-MATES! DIBADIBA??? tss.. Anyway, when we finally arrived there, first thing we did was to eat. We went around looking for a proper lunch but it seemed that they only served snacks like burgers and hotdogs whereas I wanted rice or something. So we ended up just eating at CPK. We shared pizza and pasta and Daniel got soup and a sandwich. After eating, we walked around some more and the guys got to talking on how they pity each other or whoever was with me because they had to put up with my FUNNY AWESOME AND AMAZING jokes. :| tss... After walking and talking and bonding, we ate at Pinkberry, a frozen yogurt store where Shaun works at LA then we walked around some more until we went home.

After resting for a while, Shaun and I went to dinner to a seafood restaurant. I love fish and seafood! It's so sad to see only a few places serving and selling them :( Anyway, dinner was great! It's the yummiest thing I've had since I've been here :) After eating, we tried to walk around a park nearby but it was too cold and I think the park was closed so we just decided to head back home.

MONDAY:
EARLY in the morning, Shaun greeted me and gave me his present, which I ABSOLUTELY LOVE!!! And he didn't stop there. He then pulled out this tupperware and showed me that he also baked me 21 sugar cookies spelling out "HAPPY BIRTHDAY FIONA ONG" which looked something like this:

and ended up with him asking me to be his girlfriend with this:

with both our names and birthstones

He was already making it the best birthday ever! :) THANK YOU! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! >:D< hihi :)

So after that spectacle, we had breakfast at a quaint French Cafe called La Boulange then went off to Fisherman's Wharf for the afternoon.

We went to the Ripley's museum and the mirror maze (which was fun and scary at the same time x.x) here's what it looked like:

then ate at the Boudin Bistro for lunch. After that, we walked around Pier 39, browsed through shops, took lotsa pictures, then went back to the dorm. We then waited outside for my tita Pining to show up and when they finally did, they had a balloon and brought lots of Filipino food for our mini "handaan". And yes, they even brought beer for me. Haha! After eating once again, we ate an oreo cookies and cream ice cream cake from my parents (which was divine!!!)

Then we cleaned up before they all went back home. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO WAS THERE WITH ME!

Though it was my first birthday to be away from my family, everyone made it equally memorable and happy. :)
