The Icelandic Punk Museum in Reykjavik

Music heavily influences various aspects of my life. I grew up listening to rock music. My mother and father were fans of Kiss, Led Zeppelin, The Ramones & Rod Stewart. Punk rock has always been my favorite and I graduated onto also falling in love with the grunge movement and all artists from that era. My favorite T-shirt is one my mom gave me. One of the custom made tees her and my father had (his/hers), matching ones with snakes in the front and their last name on the back, to go to rock shows together. I eventually grew up to be like my mom: long hair, rock t-shirts, jeans and boots, anything leather and a love for attending live music shows.

Music plays an important role in makeup and vice verse. They feed off of one another. When I look at music videos from the past eras, I always find myself intrigued by the makeup and hair styles of those particular times. The punk scene from the 1970's has long since been highly influential in fashion and trends including fashion houses such as: Givenchy, Balenciaga & Saint Laurent.

When I was researching places to visit and things to do in Reykjavik, Iceland, I came across the Icelandic Punk Museum and my heart stopped. I knew I had to visit it. I am currently here and I just went to it. It is amazing. It kind of caught me off guard when I walked by it today, since I was not planning on visiting on this day. The Icelandic Punk Museum is not in an area I thought it would be. It is bam smack in the middle of a bustling tourist location, near the Hard Rock Cafe and souvenir shops with a brand new Joe & The Juice open nearby.

The stairway leads you down to the Punk Museum that used to be a bathroom, with each stall hosting signs, posters and tagging that emote the punk rock movement, messages, sentiments and energy. I literally felt like I was in Camden, (London) in this small museum. These used to be public restroom stalls and the owner is none other than THE John Lydon from the Sex Pistols!!!!!

This has definitely inspired me to want to do a punk rock beauty editorial. Yes, I know this has been done many of times but I haven't done it and growing up in a rock loving family and being a punk rock fanatic myself, I am sure it will make me happy internally, to incorporate my love for punk rock music married with my love of makeup and color. A Journal of my Work So I Remember When I Get Old

When I was younger I kept a diary, a journal and always wrote about my daily occurrences; what was important to me at that point of my life, what I didn't dare voice to any other being, not even my mom. Like when I got my feelings hurt by someone, or my fears. As I got older, I started writing about things I wanted to do in the future, goals, setting smaller goals to achieve bigger goals. I have kept this type of tradition with myself but now I don't always write in a diary and although I always try to use a pen and paper, I more often than not find myself typing in stuff on my notes.

I just wanted to take some time and although I have said this numerous times before, really start taking the time to blog again. Blogging, like the writing part of it has died down and people tend to do more of the vlogging, or curated IG posts, Pinterest boards, the new wave of things. Not sure that anyone even reads this but I want to do this for the maybe one or two readers I might have but most importantly for myself.

The past two years have been incredible for me in regards to growth both on a personal level and in my career too. I initially wanted to be a fashion makeup artist but I soon realized that the universe was pulling me more towards television and commercials. The best thing to do for me, is to go with the flow of things. So that is what I have done and although I don't spend as much time working on my book, I do get the chance to do an editorial or beauty story here and there. I had set out the goal for this year to work on my book and I have done more shoots than I have in the past couple of years prior but need to do more.

In the weeks to come I will be doing recaps of special moments of 2016 and 2017. The most incredible ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

* Working with my favorite band ever Tegan and Sara for their White Knuckles music video
(This is like a Bey fan doing makeup on Beyonce...just wanted to clarify how big this was to me)
* Traveling for the past two and half years to Europe for show seasons and meeting incredible people
* Assisting artists I admire and respect backstage in Milan & Paris
* Doing shoots in Milan & Paris and obtaining clients overseas
* Was able to work on a Major film out in 2018
* Grew my artist client base

All of these things are great and although I am vague with the things I have been doing this year, I am most thankful for being able to go back home to California and see my mom and babies (dogs Coco and Amber) and also attend my younger brother's wedding in the Central Coast with someone he loves.

As freelancers, we are constantly on the hunt for what's next, the following project, the upcoming goal to reach and so forth... that we really forget to take the time to take care of ourselves, those we love and what really matters in life. Yes, yes, we all want to live, breathe, sleep, eat fashion, makeup etc, but at the end of the day, at the end of our life, what will be remembered is who we were, how we treated others, basically our soul, our legacy.

My all time icon was and will always be the late Kevyn Aucoin, and although he was far ahead of his time and setting trends for decades to come, we have to also thank him for putting makeup artists at the forefront of the media and recognizing artists as an integral part of the celebrity package and taking artists from the backstage to the fore front. However, whenever anyone talks about Kevyn, the talent he possessed is inarguably what he was known for the most but equally as important was his character. Anyone ever asked about how it was to work with Kevyn always talks about how he was pure love, a joy to be around and everyone adored him as an individual. Beyond his artistry and legacy as a master face painter he was beloved and made everyone he blessed with his touch feel great, from the inside out.

This has been a challenge for me since I have a very serious character and way of being. I am not bubbly nor extremely loving when I speak or interact with people but through my respect and sincere care for others I have managed to maintain wonderful work relationships with clients and photographers as well as other colleagues that continuously refer me to potential clients or have me cover for them on their regular clients. That trust is gold to me. Thank you everyone. Thank you for walking on this journey with me and for taking me along as well. I want to thank myself for not changing who I am and knowing that although I am introverted and I struggle to be comfortable in over the top environments, I am making it work all while being myself, always.

This week I will attend a documentary screening of Kevyn Aucoin here in NYC. I was personally invited by the KA Beauty team and I am very excited and emotional about attending this event. I will keep you updated on the event.

Pro Makeup Artists' Advice on How to Take Your Career to the Next Level

In a digital world filled with self-proclaimed makeup artists, beauty gurus and insta-artists, so many aspiring makeup artists are confused as to whom to turn to for advice as to what to do to take their makeup career to the next level. I give credit to the online personalities making videos teaching makeup enthusiasts how they execute their makeup on themselves. Those videos can be fun and many definitely provide great tips, not to mention how much time and editing go into making them.

However, if you want to be a true working artist or take your career to the next level, the best thing to do is heed the advice of those who do it full time. Working makeup artists are extremely hard workers and the constant hustle of freelancing is not for the faint of heart. There is so much more involved than the glamour and fun that is shown on social media outlets. Being a full time freelance makeup artist requires a lot more than a full artillery of cosmetic products. What can you do to take your makeup career to the next level? What can you do if you feel stuck in a makeup rut?

I asked some of my makeup artist friends that have years of experience as full time freelance makeup artists. They live in NYC, one of the most expensive cities in the world, and sustain themselves economically only via makeup work income. These are the artists you can become a sponge with and absorb all of the invaluable information they share with you in regards to what helped them grow as artists and what steps to take to elevate your career and take it to the next level.

All of the artists that shared their advice with me for this blog post maintain busy in a highly competitive industry, all have great reputations and work in various facets of the makeup industry. These are the working makeup artists, aspiring makeup artists should strive to be like. They are the ones who work internationally for fashion shows, on big movie sets, television shows, travel around the world learning and teaching beauty as well as with celebrities and those in the music industry.

Me: What advice would you give makeup artists wanting to take their career to the next level?

Chris:
Never stop learning! Try new products, rotate your kit every so often. Have a favorite product you can't leave home without, challenge yourself and get rid of it, give it away. Never get too comfortable. Always keep things fresh, I guaranty your artistry will improve, and you will become a more confident artist. Never take "NO" for an answer, when one door closes another is always waiting to be opened. I'll say it again: always challenge yourself. I'll tell a short story I'm sure you have heard before. A poor man went to church everyday and prayed to a statue, "please let me win the lottery, please let me win the lottery", for months he would go and pray until out of frustration the statue comes to life and says: "my son, buy a ticket!" Your goals require action. Just go for it!

Tracy: If you are thinking about taking your makeup career to the next step; whatever that step that may be- remember this, it's very simple. Stay humble. Stay aware. Try and keep your ego out of it.
Don't burn bridges with people you may feel you are superior to. You don't know what they have done to get where they are and you don't know what they can do in the future to help you get to your next step!
Pay your dues. Nothing with be handed to you, but if handed to you, don't forget where it came from and don't forget where you came from.
Don't get jealous of others' success. Be happy and surround yourself with those people! I promise it will do more positive for you in the future.
Don't ever stop learning. Once you think you're the best and you know it all-you just stopped yourself from learning and growing with this everlasting art we are so lucky to be apart of!

Me: What advice would you give makeup artists wanting to take their career to the next level?

Margina:

1) learn to master clean beauty and many variations of it along with really good skin (foundation) work. Learn to make the skin look flawless not cakey. Nailing this will help you in assisting and getting work on your own.

2) get off of social media and look at credits on advertising jobs, Editorials, tv and films to see who you might want to assist. Many working artists don't have huge social media following, so do your homework to see who is working on what.

3) Develop a thick skin; listen and never stop learning or striving to be better. This industry is ever changing and you must continue to evolve or you will get left behind.

Dewy Skin & Glitter by Leriam Photo

Leriam was one of the first photographers I worked with when I started doing makeup. She was actually the first photographer I did a beauty shoot with an agency model. I work with her a few times a year for a look book, for a client of hers. It's always a pleasure to work with her, but whenever we do a test shoot or an editorial it's always awesome.

I love working with all sorts of teams but I feel that women photographers are severely underrepresented, and there are so many talented ones in the game. Since I am all for women empowerment, it is always super exciting to work with an all female team. Leriam has a vision when she shoots, is a quick shooter and also gives great direction to the team as well as the model. All of this is great but the cherry on top is that she allows her team to actually collaborate with her and we all vibe off of each other.

For this shoot I used OCC glitters and skin, as well as gloss. For the highlighter I used Pat McGrath Labs in the gold tone.

I am obsessed with the Ramones. Just about anyone who knows me well, is aware that I wish I could have attended a Ramones concert during their hay day. Hashtag PuNk iS nOt dEaD! I just got back from London a few weeks ago and was living for and absorbing every second I spent in Camden- where the real punk scene still thrives. From mohawks and crazy bright hair color, to the Docs, leather jackets everywhere, studs, band patches, more studs and ripped vests-everywhere you look you will see a punk vibe.

I am always thrilled when anything involves The Clash, Sex Pistols, Crass, The Misfits, Bad Brains or a little Rancid. So when my photographer friend, Nick told me about a shoot that had punk rock vibes I was so with it.

The thing about fashion is that you can always take inspiration from anything and put a spin on it and interpret it in whichever manner you like. For this shoot, we made her pretty in punk. I had worked with the model Dom before and was excited to be reunited with her.

Pretty in Punk was a cool shoot and I had fun with the makeup. I had recently returned from Europe when we had the shoot and I was inspired by graphic liner because that was all the rage for many shows during FW 2016 season. Dom the model also had perfect lips so we opted for statement lips to offset her bleached hair and brows.

When I first started doing makeup I really wanted my work to be in NOI.SE magazine one day. This was something I was finally able to scratch off my list. Many artists gravitate to the indie magazines geared towards creatives.

I showed up to my friend's apartment in Brooklyn a few minutes before the call time. We were going to travel out of the city to a home in the country. It was a chilly day and I was excited to have a day trip out of the city.

When the model showed up she had this dope, black suede jacket with long fringe, vintage of course, as well as an English accent coupled with a semi-raspy voice. The down to earth model was the icing on the cake to working with a chill crew. I knew it was going to be a smooth and fun day.

We drove out to the shoot location and as soon as I got out of the car I could smell the earth aromas and took deep breaths. I didn't struggle to breathe. My asthma was to be serene throughout the day. Sometimes, you just need out of the city-no yellow cabs, no bright lights or streets filled with locals being annoyed at tourists. Just a mellow day surrounded by trees, green grass and a blue sky with the wind sending a cold breeze across our faces. My favorite type of weather.

The makeup for this shoot was rather simple. A soft brown smokey eye to enhance Emily, the model's blue eyes and a nude lip with rose and brown hues to accentuate her lips. I opted to keep the skin fresh and with minimal foundation and a subtle highlight.

I am a highly introverted person that only becomes a chatterbox with my family and closest of friends. When producer and journalist Jeanie from Yahoo Personal Finance asked if I would like to be part of a video focusing on beauty on a budget I was nervous beyond explanation of words but accepted the opportunity.

The video focuses on 6 Must-Have Drugstore Beauty Products Under $10. It is geared towards women who would like to have quality makeup products that don't break the bank. Forever Young Makeup in a World of Aging Makeup

Take a stroll through the skincare aisles of any Sephora or Department store, you will be overwhelmed with skin care products that cater to preventing any signs of aging. We as a society, seemed to be obsessed with anti-aging and age reversal products, not just resorting to preventative topical measures to avoid it but even succumbing to needles and knives all in the pursuit of looking forever young. That's why its so mind boggling to me to see see teenagers packing on layer upon layers of makeup and over contouring in a non-blended manner as well as inappropriately distorting their face shape and bone structure because they copy what a guru shows them.

When I was a teenager, I looked older than I was. I noticed that my friends would apply what I believed to be a lot of makeup but in comparison to the Instagram/Youtube phenomenon that currently exists among pre-teens and teens, it was very light.

I was part of a shoot recently with a model who was in her twenties. I opted to keep her makeup light, fresh and natural with a soft wash of color on the lids and lips. Don't get me wrong, I love a heavy glam look, it gives me life....but I feel that there is something so ultimately chic about clean, soft makeup. It helps you look healthy and fresh and when you actually do glam it up on special occasions it is more of a noticeable, drastic change. Also, why not look forever young by using makeup to enhance your best features and save the super glam stuff for special occasions?

Interview with Couture Manicurist: Kelly B.

Manicurists are not reserved for salons only. I always see them on set, backstage at fashion shows and most celebrities will not dare go on the red carpet without a nice set of nails. Kelly B. is a Couture Manicurist working in the industry here in NYC or wherever her work takes her upon requests of clients. Her nail work has graced the covers of numerous magazines including Vogue, advertising campaigns and commercials. Throughout the years, she has worked with plenty of celebrities, notable personalities and elite photographers along with top industry makeup artists as well as established models.

Kelly and I have known each other for some time via social media and we have worked together in the past year. I admire her attention to detail, years of experience and professionalism. She is a highly sought after manicurist in the industry. I always find it intriguing to get to know the individuals behind the art and discover what inspires them and motivates them. Read along to get to know Kelly B. a little better, she has some good advice applicable to not just manicurists.

Years in NYC: 10 years

Have you always had a passion for nails? Yes. I did my friends nails and my own before I was trained in Cosmetology school. I feel I was destined to be a Manicurist.
Nails found me, I never pursued a career in it at all. I literally would get the supplies that

were available to me at local stores to paint my nails. I groomed my cuticles with nail

clippers until I learned to use the correct implements in beauty school.

Who or what inspires you? I love color & shape. I get inspired from lots of things.

How did you get into the industry? I have a salon background. I became friends with

a girl who was a celebrity Manicurist but also worked part time in the salon I

worked at. She would hire me from time to time. From there, I met a few different

people and did test shoots until the opportunity came for me to get represented.

Was the competition different when you started than it is now? Yes, there are a lot

more people doing nails now for shoots. Some do good work others do not. Your

work has to be good (clean & neat) otherwise why even bother.

You have done nails since before it became a fad, how have you managed to stay

afloat amongst the flood of new artists? I believe in sticking to foundational

principles I learned years ago, which is: to take good care of the nail. Models are

subject to a lot of torture from people who are not trained properly. I would never

glue nail tips on with superglue but people do. I know not to ever put anyone’s

health & wellbeing at risk like that. I stay true to who I am, a high end manicurist

that takes excellent care of the nail.

What is your nail technique style that sets you apart? I’m known for shapes, clean,

beautiful, & well done high-end nails.

There are tons of nail brands and products out in the market, do you have any

particular favorites or kit staples? I love Chanel, Dior, Deborah Lippmann, Zoya,

CND, & Maxus. These brands are staples in my kit.

You have worked with plenty of celebrities & notable personalities, who is the most

fun artist you have worked with thus far? Drew Barrymore is funny & Alyssa Milano

is a joy to work with.

Not everything that glitters is gold, and being a freelancer is tough, have you had any

setbacks or challenges in your career? The biggest challenge is my work schedule. I

miss a lot of family events & don’t get to see my friends as often as I’d like. Thank

God I haven’t had any setbacks. Freelance life is tough because you never know your

schedule in advance, so I can’t make plans until very last minute. My friends

understand but I still miss our girl time.

Doing nails in a salon setting is different from being an editorial nail artist, what

advice would you give to aspiring editorial nail artists? Yes it is. Know your craft, be

sanitary, & be original. I’m careful not to copy someone’s work. If I’m inspired by

others work I credit the person who originally did it.

What has been your most outstanding moment in your career? Seeing my work on a

billboard for a line I’ve worn for many years, working with iconic writer Toni

Morrison, & having my work in a few Maybelline commercials.

Have you set any concrete goals for 2016 and what can we expect from you this

year? To have another great year, stay tuned... my lips are sealed on some projects.

What do you think are the keys to success? Being humble, being kind, and always do

your best work. Never take anything for granted.

Where do you see yourself in ten years from now? Married possibly with children,

still contributing to the beauty & fashion industry in a huge way.

I can't wait to see what Kelly B. has in store for 2016 and I look forward to her upcoming work. Wishing her a wonderful ten years+ in her career as a Couture Manicurist!!!! I am glad to call her a friend and an inspiration.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I am a little late to the game but I wanted to express my gratitude to everyone that helped me, referred me and worked with me in 2015 and also share with you my wonderful experiences of this past year.

My 2015 started off pretty shaky for me because those crazy winter months are rather slow and for those of you that know me well are aware of my chronic asthma, so I was cooped up saying no to the seldom jobs I was blessed to be offered. This discouraged me but things picked up at the end of January and I was hopeful my year would be good.

This year was one of growth and discovery in regards to my art. For the most part of the year I focused on television and commercial work. It is hard to say no to work and I feel fortunate to constantly work but to be honest, I felt an extreme emptiness in me because I was not test shooting or doing any creative beauty. My biggest fear as an artist is to become monotonous in my work and bland. So, I realized that for me, I need to balance paid work and self gratifying work in regards to letting my creative juices flow. Both are so different and being on either set really makes me happy and brings me joy.

Below are some of my highlights of this work year:

* Joined the Local 798 IATSE union as a makeup artist

* Worked on Lottie's makeup team for fashion week in Milan. (major dream/goal come true)

* Was on the Maybelline Pro team under key artist Yadim

* Worked in Milan and Paris

* Interviewed in an international publication as an artist

* Two different publications interviewed me regarding a makeup look I did on a celebrity

* Fortunate to be key artist on a handful of national commercials and advertising jobs

* Did makeup and grooming on more notable personalities and celebs I could have imagined

* I was able to obtain new commercial clients, keep them, work with them on a continuous basis

* Did a handful of editorials for smaller scale print publications

* Dayplayed on episodics and I am a regular artist for TV jobs

* Practiced doing blowouts, not a pro but I have worked on my hair skills

I am so thankful to all the creatives that refer me and pass my info along for gigs, this past year was excellent thanks to you all. I am also grateful to work with people that believe in me and have given me a chance. Excited and thrilled for what's to come this year! Wishing everyone a wonderful, and productive work year filled with love, growth and gratification.

One of the awesome things about Social Media is that you get the chance to be friends with other creatives and people before you meet them. So when you finally meet, it's like you already know them and automatically click and feel connected on set. Photographer Patrick Lacsina and I have followed each other on Instagram and FB for some time now. It was super cool to finally get to work with him during his visit in NYC.

We shot out of a studio in Brooklyn. Funny thing is that we have another mutual friend in common, hair stylist: Matthew Tuozzoli. It was dope to all work together on quick, yet fun shoot.

"Comfort in Chaos" was featured as an online editorial for Deux Hommes - a digital platform featuring emerging designers.

This past Sunday I was able to do makeup in a well lit conference room at The Dream Hotel. All makeup artists will understand how thankful and appreciative I was for the natural lighting with huge windows...perfect for makeup application. Hotels have that pretty bad rep for horrible lighting.

It was a lifestyle shoot for Jackie Cruz, a season regular on the hit show on Netflix, Orange Is The New Black, recent partnership with Kimberly Smalls of Enjoue Swimwear. Diane Guerrero, also an actress from OITNB showed her support by partaking in the shoot for the swimwear line and article featured on Vivala.

The makeup look we opted for Jackie Cruz was a mod look in monochromatic neutral tones, nude lips and a bold black liner and lashes. For Diane, the look was more of a sun-kissed glow in bronze tones and soft neutral lips. Both makeup looks were created using Chantecaille Beaute, Murad Skin Care and Artis Brushes.

Innocent & Green Scene in the Concrete Jungle

Living in NYC, it's not often that we get to be surrounded by trees, plants and just an overall green scenery. It was refreshing to shoot in an area that made me question if I was still in NYC. The mosquitos situation was mad real though. My legs have the scars to prove it lol.

The makeup look for this shoot was aiming for a fresh dewy look with good skin. It was a pretty hot day so instead of skipping out on powder, I did used cream highlighter and set her face with powder. We had initially prepped at a home studio and then drove to the location in one of the surrounding boroughs. So the drive there and walk from parking allowed for her skin to become dewy and refrain from becoming oily or allowing the makeup to move.

She's Got The Moves Like Jagger

I recently had the opportunity to work model Kailah at Major Models. She has an amazing hair cut and a stunning face. I always love doing makeup and hair on models that can easily slip into an androgynous mood and pose like a dude yet still look beautiful. Kailah totally reminded me of an androgynous Mick Jagger.

Like I mentioned previously, she has dope hair and I opted to keep the same type of texture. When she arrived at the shoot her hair was a little wet and sweaty. So I opted to spray wet a little more, add some Kevin Murphy Body.Builder mousse hair mousse, dry with my T3 Micro blow dryer and a blow dryer "sock" or mitt diffuser. I then took my T3 Micro Whirling Wand and loosely spiral curled hair in different chunk sizes, alternating between going forward and backward with the curls. Her bangs were blow-dried with a boar bristle round brush. Using my hands and fingers, I loosened up curls and had her shake hair aka whip her hair back and forth. I set flyaways with Kevin Murphy Session.Spray hair spray.

For her makeup we kept it bronze and smokey using Murad skin care to prep and Chantecaille Beaute on her face.

Skin: I used Chantecaille Future Skin foundation in Vanilla, Concealed with Le Camouflage Concealer under eyes, and to spot cover where needed. I applied Chantecaille Radiance gel bronzer to sculpt face, Demure cream blush and set with HD translucent pressed powder from Chantecaille.

Eyes: I used a shadow palette to apply shadow on lashline, Patchouli color on lash line and blend and smudge upward, Shale shadow on crease and outer edge and defined with Patchouli on outer edge and under eyes. a mixture of Shale and powder foundation on her lids. Mascara, two coats on top lashes.

Lips: I used Demure creme blush mixed the concealer and topped with Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream-all applied with a lip brush.

Minimalist Beauty at the Beach

One of the most important things to do as a makeup artist is to be well prepared for on-location shoots, which is pretty much shooting outdoors: at the park, on the streets, on a rooftop, on a beach-anywhere outside, not in a studio.

Some important products that I carry with me (besides my basic kit and set bag) for beach shoots are:

*Spray Sunscreen (everyone on set usually takes advantage of this too lol)
*Lip balm with sunscreen
*Sunscreen for the face
*Baby wipes
*Umbrella
* Hat & Sunglasses (for yourself)
*Paper Towels to blot off extra perspiration on models

I had a great time shooting with a fun team for this beach editorial. The model Alexa from The Society, is very fair so the products mentioned above aided in not getting sun burned.

To ensure extra protection, I used Murad Oil Control Mattifer Lotion with 15 Spf and Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum 30 SPF.

Summer Twist on Liner: Bright Blue & Mint Hues

It's good to switch things up a bit, especially with makeup. Sometimes we get into the routine of doing the same exact thing day after day. I am guilty of this, I usually rock a black liner and red lips all the time. Summer is here and we should be happy, even though not all of us have the luxury of being beach bums like those of you who live near a beach. So, why not bring a bit of the beach to your makeup routine to spunk it up a bit?

During the SS2015 Runway shows across the world we saw aquatic hues as well as mint and pastel colors grace the lids and bottom lash lines at the show. There was so much inspiration. These were my favorite:

*Peter Philips, the key at the Fendi runway show created a bold graphic blue liner, but not in pencil, gel or cream...they used leather, he also used satin on the lids in pastel colors at the Dior show!!!

*Holly Fulton even had a statement ombre water line that started with bright blue at the outer edges and faded into a white.

*Terry Barber kept minimal makeup with a strong lower liner in black for Just Cavalli.

*For the Ellie Saab, key makeup artist Tom Pecheux kept it very interesting with bright aquatic hues, primarily in the blue family.

The great thing about being a creative artist is that all my friends are also fellow creatives and sometimes we get together to play and have fun. A couple weeks ago I got to spend the day with two of my best friends here in NYC. Photographer: Eduardo Acevedo and Hairstylist: Andrita Renee. We shot some fun looks.

For the makeup, I wanted to keep the skin clean and healthy and play with the eyes. Gathering inspiration from all of the SS2015 runway shows, I decided to do my own little spin by interchanging and mixing some of my favorite looks of the season.

For Carola @ Major, I opted to go with a color that would contrast and pop against her beautiful skin color. I did bright blue graphic line on lids, winged out in a straight angle.

The pencil I used is OCC Cosmetic Colour Pencil in "Pool Boy," it's also vegan and cruelty free.

With Lauren @ Major, I decided to go a complete different route than to do a typical heavy liner on top lids like most people do with models and women that have smaller creases or no creases. It was a great opportunity to enhance her eyes by lighting filling in her full brows and going with a pastel, mint green lower liner. For this I used the pencil from the tear duct and drew going outward, finishing the wing detail with a Hakudo Pro Series liner brush. Using a small pencil brush also from Hakuhodo, I topped with the green color from the Dior 5 Couleurs Trianon Edition #234 Pastel Fontanges.

The eyeliner I used is by Nars, the Larger than Life Long-wear Eyeliner in "Barrow Street."

I hope you ladies are courageous and switch up your makeup look during the summer, at least on one weekend outing. It doesn't even have to be something extreme, just a pop of color! Both liners I used are amazing but if not, use a bit of water, setting spray or rose water to foil your eyeshadow and apply with a brush to create a liner.

Makeup on Jackie Cruz aka Flaca Gonzalez from OITNB for the WPA Season 3 Premiere Party

I had the opportunity to do makeup on Orange is The New Black actress Jackie Cruz, also known as "Flaca Gonzalez" on the show. On the show Jackie, "Flaca" has some pretty solid eyeliner skills, that are even referenced on the show, with tear drops near her tear ducts.

This past Friday, not only did she appear at the WPA Season 3 Premiere, but also performed singing solo, serenading Ruby Rose on stage and singing along with co-star Taryn Manning.

To create Jackie's retro look with a modern twist and pop of fiery red lipstick, I used Chantecaille Beaute.

Kid's Grooming...Makeup & Hair for Children

Kid's grooming is great and requires very little to almost no makeup. However, if you ever had any nephews, nieces or children of your own-you know that their hands always seem to get dirty and even the most clean of children can get messy.

Skin Prep:

Just as adults, skin prep is of essence when doing children's grooming. This is how I do it:

* Start off by using baby wipes to clean their face, nostrils, hands, feet and knees. I then take a soft tissue and remove eye gunk and crust, go over nostrils a second time.

* Inspect hands and remove nail polish if girls have painted nails, making sure to clean under neath nails and try my best to remove all traces of marker or pen marks with nail polish remover.

* Apply Johnson's Baby Lotion over arms, legs and feet as well as hands. The sunscreen option is great if you want a shiny dewy finish on skin. My pick for this is Coppertone Oil Free Lightweight and Fast Absorbing sunscreen for kids. (It's great because it won't clog pores and is dermatologist recommended.)

* Go back to the face and apply either baby lotion or kid's sunscreen on the face- if I'm aiming for a healthy glow.

* Apply Homeoplasmine with a Q-tip or lip brush on lips since it doesn't have any shine.

Makeup:

Kids usually have fabulous skin and virtually invisible pores, so makeup application is simple and I only use minimal product on their face.

*Use foundation such as Armani "Luminous Silk Foundation" as a concealer under eyes and around the nostrils. (MAC Face & Body is a good option too.)

* Sometimes children have scrapes and scratches that have become scabs. To cover these, I use either Armani Maestro Concealer (it's a liquid concealer) or Tarte Creaseless Concealer and apply with a lip brush or a small pencil brush over the scab.

* Most of the kids have a natural rosy flush of color on their cheeks. If they are lacking in color I use Kevyn Aucoin cream blush in Isadore or their duo cream blushes and choose according to light or darker skin tones. I apply with my hands or with an airbrush foundation brush on apples of cheeks.

* If a sun kissed look is required- use a large fluffy brush to add a bit of warmth on forehead, cheeks nose and chin such as Marc Jacobs bronzer in Tantric #102.

* Pass a brow brush through their brows

Hair:

Usually on most shoots involving kids, the ideal hair requested is their locks in their natural state. I very rarely do much.

Boys:

* I run a brush or my fingers through their hair.

* If it needs to be more piece-y then I warm up a bit of hair paste such as Kevin Murphy "Night Rider."

* If they are sweaty, (from running around and playing while waiting to be on set), then I blast cool air on their hair with my T3 Micro blow dryer. Seriously, I don't know what it is but the young boy models always have amazing hair and cuts.

Girls:

I try and keep their hair the same as well, the goal is to keep their hair looking natural and not too "done." Sometimes I don't even brush their hair.

*Just have them flip their hair over their face and I spray Bumble and Bumble Dry Spun finish soft texturizing spray. It gives that messy beach hair minus the crunch.

* When their hair is a little on the oily side I spray the roots with dry hair shampoo. The one I carry in my kit is Oscar Blandi in spray form.

* Some girls hair is curlier on the hair that falls on the nape of the neck so I take a large curling iron and pass it through that area, it tames down the curls but still leaves some texture and body. I then, take a wand and whirl a few pieces of hair on the top of hair with it to give waves, always keeping them looking natural and kind of beachy/messy.

* For little girls with afros I either take a small curler and add a few spring curls on top or leave as is and simply spray Oscar Blandi Shine Spray and massage it in to add hydration and shine.

When I am booked to do children's grooming, I make sure to bring hair ties, hair bands, and bobbi pins in bright, fun colors. It looks good on your behalf and those small touches can add the finishing touch to a cute ponytail or bun if that is asked from you to do on set.

Most importantly, I find that treating the children like little adults and engaging with them in conversation is the best way to interact with them on set, especially while getting them prepped. They will surprise you with their thoughts and ideas, kid's say the most spontaneous things and are far more intelligent than we sometimes give them credit for.

Tip Tuesday: "But First Let me Take a #Selfie" No Filter Makeup

With the popularity of Instagram and #selfies on social media, it has made it harder for everyone to want to post a photo of themselves without some type of filter, skin softening, blurring effects, and some even go to great lengths as legit photoshopping their images prior to posting. This is especially true with the makeup gurus or Instagram famous makeup enthusiasts or junkies.

However, this past weekend I was at The Makeup Show and I saw dozens of women who's makeup was applied like the people the admire and follow, even idolize on social media. The problem is that this type of makeup looks less dramatic when they have special lighting sets god for filming videos, the use of several filters and retouching, not to mention specific flattering angles in which photo is taken from...usually sky high above to give the illusion of the slimming effect.

So for my Tip Tuesday:

If you don't want to go outside looking crazy, (unless that is the look you are trying to go for) make sure:
*you do your makeup in natural lighting or good lighting for that matter,
*blend your makeup and take a #selfie before walking out of the door

Analyze it and if you look good before the filter and don't need to rely on these beauty apps to smooth skin, blur out and blend for you, then chances are you don't look crazy. Good makeup on the everyday woman doesn't need a filter, or photoshop.

Makeup for Men...I Mean, Grooming for Men

Almost one third of my jobs every month are corporate client jobs such as real estate companies, banks, law firms, computer and tech savvy companies. Many of these companies require head shots. The vast majority of the employees are everyday men.

At first, most of the men are reluctant and adopt the ever so popular macho attitude and refuse any makeup. The thought of any cosmetic products makes them shiver in fear. So I smile and say: "I can either do it here at my makeup station in private or I can do your grooming (makeup and hair for men) on set right in front of everyone. I promise I won't make you look like a drag queen." Needless to say, they chuckle and give in and when it's time to leave, I offer them makeup wipes, about 98% of the men decide to keep their makeup on, they love it!!!

Now, I could be lazy and just slap on some powder on their faces which have been exposed to the ever so pure air of NYC, but I really like to give my clients an experience they won't forget. So I usually cleanse their face, use a toner and apply an eye cream as well as a moisturizer. If needed, I use a little concealer under eyes to cover dark circles and depending on the individual, either a pressed color powder or a translucent pressed powder to eradicate shine.

How can the everyday man use makeup? Well, for starters, having a skin care routine is an excellent start, using a face wash daily, a toner and moisturizer day and night. If you want to get fancy then an eye cream can be added into the mix. Even if you don't want to invest in expensive skin care, any drug store brands will do the job. They have plenty of economical options catered to men, specifically.

The Non Visible Makeup Routine for men:

*Face wash
*Toner, Witch Hazel or an Astringent applied with a cotton ball or cotton round
*Eye Cream
* Moisturizer- an Oil Control one for oily skin or a super hydrating one for dry skin
*Concealer under eyes if you have dark circles and you can apply this on the side of nose too
*Skip the previous step if you have flawless skin, you can apply to blemishes too
*Apply translucent (no color) powder to forehead, nose and chin with a sponge or powder puff

Below are some of my favorite products for men:

Face wash: Cetyphyll can be bought at any pharmacy or Wal*Mart/Target

Moisturizer: Murad Oil Control Mattifer can be purchased at Sephora (Neutrogena makes an oil free moisturizer that can be purchased at any pharmacy)

Eye Cream/Eye Gel:
Nivea Eye Roll-On reduces puffiness and dark circles. It's inexpensive and makes you look well rested. Purchase at your local pharmacy.

Concealer: Splurge: Veil Cosmetics Illuminating Complexion Fix can be used under eyes, to cover blemishes and around nose. This is worth every penny! It has a natural finish and I use this on set when I do grooming on men. You can't tell the men are wearing makeup. Can be purchased online here.

Concealer on a budget:
Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch sold at drugstores.

Translucent pressed powders: MAC Prep and Prime (on the left) and a more economical one found at drug stores is: Neutrogena Shine Control Powder (on the right)

These are the sponges you can use to apply the powder. Use for up to a week then throw away and use a new one. (You can buy these at any pharmacy or dollar store near you).

Gentleman, I hope this post has been a little helpful. Although you may not want to use the makeup, a good start is the skin care regimen. This is also good for any woman who refuses to wear makeup as well. Some concealer to erase dark circles and blemishes and translucent powder to keep away shine make anyone look very polished! Hope you venture into the concealer for special occasions!!! Real men wear makeup too.

#TipTuesday Your Makeup is Only as Good as Your Skin

So much emphasis is placed on makeup and cosmetic products.....however, your makeup is only as good as your skin. When all the makeup is removed and washed off, what remains is your face, your skin. Once the illusion of makeup is gone, what lies beneath is exposed.

So my #TipTuesday is: Invest in an excellent skin care routine appropriate for your skin type and needs. Your skin will thank you now and in the years to come. You will age more gracefully and need less makeup. When starting a new skin care routine, test product on jaw line near ear. If you don't break out after a day, then it should be safe to try on your entire face. Better safe than sorry. Test it out first.

Basics:

*makeup remover

*face wash

*toner or witch hazel

*eye cream

*face cream and SPF

These are a great start and you can add a weekly face mask and a serum and/or night cream in the future but for now start with the basics and you will see a difference. These small steps will make a huge impact on your skin now and in the future.

*Aspiring MUA? Working artists invest just as much in skin preparation for their kit. Proper skin prep on set allows for a solid and good base, makeup lasts longer and looks more flawless.*

Makeup for LuuxeHut photoshoot!

Working in this industry has not only allowed me to meet extremely talented artists and creatives but has also granted me the opportunity to become friends with people I collaborate with.

I was most recently a part of the team for the LuuxeHut photoshoot. My friend and wardrobe stylist Kyle Luu and his sister, actress Tiffany Luu curated LuuxeHut, an online fashion store that caters to girls with an alternate fashion sense. This is aboslutely amazing because it allows girls and women to dress in style with the latest fashion trends without breaking the bank.

Hi everyone! After a long hiatus from blogging, I have decided to return to writing on my blog. I want to continue to upload my recent work and perhaps talk about certain products that I love and cannot live without.

Interview with Sebastien Tardif and Veil Cosmetics

This past week I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and have a late lunch with an amazing person and friend of mine Sebastien Tardif. We met up in Colombus Circle and had great conversation about life, what's new in our careers and go over the questions I had prepared for the interview. This interview for me is very special because Sebastien, has played an important role for me in my career. I will explain how further into the interview, but I will always remain thankful to Sebastien for a great opportunity and friendship because although he has plenty of years of experience as a makeup artist, he is one of the most humble creatives you will ever meet. Just ask anyone who has ever met him. Read along!

Sebastien Tardif

1) How did your makeup journey begin?

Having always loved fine arts in school, I ended up obtaining my bachelor's degree with a major in Studio Arts. I always painted human faces loving to add more of an abstract feel to them using lots of light vs. shadow contrast and texture. During my studies, I also developed a keen interest for fashion, specifically runway shows and editorials. It all dawned on me upon graduating: faces on canvas + fashion = Makeup! That was 17 years ago and never looked back since.

2) Do you think that the makeup industry has changed from when you first began?

Absolutely. That is one of the main reasons why I like the industry so much, it is in constant evolution.

3)How do you think it has changed?

Easier access to professional makeup. Pro makeup trade shows did not exist at the time I began doing makeup and there are a lot more brands to choose from now as well. Textures have improved immensely in regards to cosmetic products, which I personally always deplored when I first began playing with makeup i.e. pancake and stick makeup were the way to go and now it’s all about HD and real looking skin which I love.

4)What key factors contributed to your success?

Coming from a small town and only speaking French, I knew from the get go I would have to export myself and learn English, and that’s exactly what I did at the age of eighteen. Additionally, hard work ethics is a must, never taking no for an answer.

5)Many makeup artists feel that they must live in cities such as NYC, Los Angeles, London, Milan, Paris to become successful...do you feel that is true?

It’s all relative to the scale and size of your dreams. All I knew is that I was going to travel for work and that’s exactly what I did. Careful what you wish for cause if you believe in yourself, it will happen.

6)What has been your biggest challenge or obstacle in your career? Myself.

7)Did you ever feel stumped or discouraged, possibly even contemplate quitting makeup? NEVER, not for one second.

8)What is your most memorable moment as a makeup artist? Certainly the launch of my makeup line Veil Cosmetics at New York Fashion Week.

9)Have you made any sacrifices to pursue your career? I worked doing makeup, traveling around the world for 13 years straight, I certainly missed out on a lot of family and friends events and gatherings.

10)What advice would you give to makeup artists that really want to make it in the industry? Believe in yourself, keep an open mind and be curious; if you ever think you “have arrived”, that’s when your star will start to fade and die.

I personally am a true fan of your cosmetic line, Veil Cosmetics. It's funny because we met during your launch of Veil during NYFW a few seasons ago. 1)How did the idea of Veil come to be?

Interview with makeup artist: Karla Hirkaler

I have neglected my blog for some time now because I really didn't have the time to write and with the internet being over saturated with how-to and makeup blogs I was a little discouraged. I opted to begin blogging again and will be interviewing working makeup artists from around the world to showcase what inspires them, how they got started in the industry and celebrate their accomplishments!

I interviewed a friend of mine and fellow Latina, Karla Hirkaler. We recently worked together during NYFW for a few shows on the Maybelline team. Not only is she a talented artist, devoted mother and wife but also a great all around individual. Interviewing her allowed me to gain insight into her journey to success as an artist.

Professionally 8 years total but seriously about 4 years, basically since I moved to NYC.

What facets of artistry are you involved in?

A little bit of everything. At this point in my career I cannot specify just one thing. I do it all, fashion, e-commerce, editorial, television. The industry is changing so much that it is ideal to know a bit of everything versus simply focusing on one aspect if you want to be booked.

How did you get started in makeup?

I was born in Peru, and my mother was concerned because I was a major tomboy. So my mom decided to enroll me into modeling school called Geraldine, in which I would be taught how to be ladylike. They offered makeup 101 classes. I was never the type of little girl to play with my mom's makeup or anything girly because I was into sports. I really liked all things art and the makeup class payed off, at 15 I did my first makeup job, it was for a wedding. I took a break from makeup and only did it occasionally as a hobby.

I moved to the states and got a job in Ft. Lauderdale doing makeup for bridal clients at Four Seasons, in Del Rey Beach. They sold Make Up For Ever, and I asked the brand to train me so I could sell their makeup at the salon at Four Seasons. They trained me and I began to sell their makeup at a private salon to my clients. I worked at the salon doing management, and makeup when needed. After that, I got married and became pregnant and lost my job at Four Seasons because of new owners that wanted a fresh start with all staff. I took a break and was on unemployment and focused on my new born. At this point my husband encouraged me to pursue makeup so I enrolled Cosmix makeup school and attended for three months.

During that time I enrolled in a summit, similar to a makeup school and I met world renowned makeup artist, Even Pearl by approaching her makeup booth. I offered my help and she mentioned she was good for now but we became friends on FaceBook. Shortly there after she posted that she needed an assistant in Orlando. I only had three images of my work but I was determined and had nothing to lose so I sent her my business resume and to my surprise she booked me. While working for her for three days I expressed my desire to move to NYC to pursue makeup. This occurred in January, and in February, I came to visit family in NYC and I opted to contact her. I traveled through a storm to meet her in the office where she expressed that she believed in me and thought I had potential. She didn't offer an internship she offered me a job. I did a little bit of everything, social media, organizing trade shows and organization of inventory as well as makeup applications. This is where it all began.

What is your opinion on Model Mayhem, many creatives think negatively about that site?

While in makeup school, I got hired with Maybelline to work as a makeup artist on their pro team in Florida. Through this, I became close to the assistant of the global makeup artist for Maybelline and I began to work fashion week shows for them and also PR events for fashion night out in New York. My first show was Catherine Malandrino followed by Betsy Johson and Custo Barcelona and L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani. This was surreal for me because I had no experience in fashion or runway. At the Catherine Malandrino, I was super nervous because I had no experience and I arrived very early and another makeup artist, showed me the ropes, gave me advice and told me what to do and what not to do. She was so helpful without me even asking and she was willing to help me. Now she refers me to jobs. I found out about this position through Model Mayhem. So it was a positive thing for me.

Biggest accomplishment as an artist to date?

Being able to handle different clients: bridal to editorial. I am very shy and sometimes it was extremely hard to interact with clients and gain confidence with experience.

Any embarrassing stories on set?

I was doing makeup for a fashion show, the models were all lined up for last looks prior to walking the runway. I walked up to the front and didn't realize that I was so far up in the line that I was practically was on stage. The key artist was talking to the designers who were in the line up and I was literally on top of them stretching to powder the models up. The key asked me to step back and the designer gave me a look like: “umm, doesn't this girl no better than to do that?” At that moment, I was so embarrassed and I thought I was going to pee my pants. The worst day of my life as a makeup artist.

Biggest inspiration?

Eve Pearl. She is a woman, a single mother and she made an empire out of her products. Eve Pearl started out with one product and it expanded out into a full line. I truly respect how she treats everyone fairly and gives them all undivided attention when they ask her questions, from beginners to full time artists already in the industry. She also has 5 Emmys and is well respected by everyone in the industry.

Do you have any mentors?

I have a few. Lea & Kiyoshi as well as Eve Pearl who guided me when I first moved to NYC.

Biggest obstacle as an artist:

Being able to balance my family life and my job. I was married to my job at the beginning and I missed out on so many things with my son. Now, I put my family first and everything else will follow. When I am with my family I give them 100% of myself an detach myself from work.

Hardest thing about being a makeup artist?: Feeling confident and not doubting myself. When I am on set other creatives on set think I am younger than them and they somewhat doubt my capabilities as an artist.

Three random facts a bout you that don't necessarily have to do with makeup artistry:

I was on the swimming team in Peru.

I love eggs on everything, over easy.

I was bullied in middle school because I had a very short hair cut and they used to call me "Carlos" instead of Karla.

What are your must have makeup items you cannot live without?

Always need Embryolisse moisturizer, Mario Badescu Rose Water Spray, Eve Pearl cream foundations.

Dream job?

To collaborate with Mario Testino, he is a fellow Peruvian and he is beyond talented.

Words of advice to beginners or MUA's that feel stumped in their careers:

Don't give up. There will be rejections, people will tell you that your work is not good enough. Take it in stride and use that to improve. A good attitude is sometimes worth more than having a beautiful portfolio. It's about energy on set and a positive attitude. Keep at it.
