Samsung beats Apple in multi-touch suit in Dutch courts

Apple took the courts in the Netherlands with an infringement suit regarding multitouch technology. Dutch courts ruled in favor of Samsung, and cleared them of any infringement claims brought forth by Apple, according to a report from Reuters. This is similar to recent rulings in favor of Samsung in the UK and Germany.

Official court documents have yet to surface. So far, only one official quote from the ruling has been made public. “With these products Samsung does not infringe the claims that Apple has made,” the Dutch court wrote. Hopefully, the rest of the official document comes out soon enough, but for now, this will have to do.

The patent in question covers a broader approach to multitouch than the IP Apple used in its California case earlier this year. The earlier suit involves specific gestures, whereas this patent infringement suit involves a deeper view of how multitouch integrates with the OS and how specific apps recognize it. It’s interesting how a patent involving essentially the same thing, but with a different level of integration can completely alter the result of a litigation.

We will have to wait for the full documents to come out to find out exactly why the Dutch courts felt that this was not a case of infringement. Either way, it’s another victory for Samsung, which should have soften the blow of the $1bn judgement in favor of Apple recently. Once the official report comes out, we will let you know in more detail why the case was thrown out by the Dutch courts.

Apple May Launch iTunes 11, iBooks 3 Alongside iPad Mini

Just one day ahead of Apple’s big press event where the company is expected to unveil the iPad Mini, new rumors indicate it might also launch iTunes 11 and the third-generation of its e-book app iBooks at the same event.

French tech blog iGen.fr is reporting various books in Apple’s digital bookstore now require iBooks 3.0 to download. The rumor that iBooks 3 could be unveiled at the event compliments other reports that the iPad Mini may have an education focus.

Earlier this year, Apple held an event in New York City that showed the company’s plans to reinvent the education industry and bring textbooks to the iPad in schools nationwide via iBooks.

Apple may also launch at the event its upcoming update to iTunes, which was first announced alongside the iPhone 5 in September. The company said to anticipate an October launch date.

iPad Mini: All the Rumors

In the days leading up to Apple’s much-anticipated announcement of the 7-inch iPad Mini tablet next week, rumors continue to circulate about what to expect when it’s finally revealed.

Will it have a Retina display? A lower-resolution screen? What about Siri and 3G connectivity?

We won’t know for sure until Apple takes the stage on Tuesday, Oct. 23 in San Jose, Calif. for the big launch.

All we do know, according to the event invitation, is Apple has “got a little more to show you” — most likely an allusion to the rumored 7.85-inch screen and all of those alleged leaked iPad Mini photos that hit the web a few weeks ago.

New Playstation 3 Model

Sony Announces New Playstation 3 Model

Just when you think the Playstation 3 couldn’t get any smaller, Sony announced this evening at the Tokyo Game Show that they will be releasing an even slimmer Playstation 3 model. This newest model will be available in the classic “charcoal black” color scheme, however Japan will also have an exclusive “classic white” version available. According to Sony the new slimmer model will be 25% lighter, will have 20% less volume than the current PS3 Slim, and will be 50% smaller than the original Playstation 3 model 1.

In North America the new slimmer Playstation 3 will be available starting as soon as September 25th in an Uncharted 3/Dust 514 Bundle, retailing for $269. This version will feature a 250GB hard drive. On October 30th Sony will also offer a 500GB version for $299, and will also bundle the new model with Assassin’s Creed III.

The European release of the new Playstation 3 model has a unique flash memory 12GB version for 229€, available starting October 12th. Europe’s 500GB model will sell for 299€ starting September 28th.

Japan like North America will carry both the 250GB and 500GB models. The 250GB will sell for 24,900 yen, while the 500GB will sell for 29,800 yen. Both will be available October 4th.

It really seems like very odd timing for Sony to be releasing a newer Playstation 3 model on the heals of a soon highly anticipated announcement regarding the new Playstation 4. November of 2012 will mark the seventh anniversary for the Playstation 3, and since March of 2012 Sony has sold about 64 million system.

iphone 5 scratches resistance

The Apple iPhone 5 is here and a lot of you have gotten to not only hold it in your hands, but also carry it in your pockets sometimes along with keys, coins and other things you’d think wouldn’t hurt your new gadget. Turns out, though, the iPhone 5’s aluminum back is surprisingly prone to scratches, especially on the edges. How much? Enough for many to sacrifice its beautiful slim wasteline and light weight, and change all that for an ugly, bulky case for protection.

Is this only an issue with first iPhone 5 models or is it going to persist? And did Apple know about this before releasing the device?

Those are two questions that would definitely bother you after you look back at some revelations shared by Foxconn employees before the iPhone 5 launch. An alleged Foxconn employee says - in a video posted before the launch of the new iPhone - that most of the iPhones produced are faulty and... the aluminum back is very easy to scratch.

Moreover, that employee claims that only 10% of the phones made at Foxconn match the quality standard they should, with all of the rest being faulty.

We find it hard to believe that if this was common knowledge for a random Foxconn worker, the ones directing the iPhone 5 manufacturing at Cupertino weren’t aware about those issues. The curious video which you can watch below also suggests that Apple will eventually perfect its manufacturing, but users should wait until at least October for that to happen.

Samsung has taken the wraps off a new addition to their camera range in the form of the Samsung WB100 which is equipped with a massive 26x optical high zoom lens.

Other features of the new Samsung WB100 include a 16-megapixel sensor with Dual Image Stabilisation (OIS + DIS), 3D photo capture, and Live Panorama Mode to name just a few.

The Samsung WB100 is also equipped with ISO 80 to 1,600 sensitivity or up to 3,200 for 3-megapixel photos and is capable of recording 720p video. Samsung explains:

Google Glasses To Release In Less Than Two Years – Sergey Brin

Finally, after the launch of Google Nexus 7, we would be using Google Glasses soon. Google Glasses would be an Internet based glasses, which will be helpful for daily life tasks like taking navigating routes for one place to other. It is now estimated that the Glasses will strike the market in about two years.

None other than Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin has disclosed the new estimated release date. They introduced the newer version of the Glass with the involvement of Skydivers with those new Glasses.
Here is what Sergey Brin had to say about, “I’m so glad that worked,” Sky divers were streamed live for wearing the Google Glasses and they had jump from an airplane. They landed on a roof of San Francisco convention center. Sergey Brin also admitted that he really was not expecting it on that level.

Sky divers after landing on roof gave some package to the cyclists. The cyclists had a ride on the Moscone Center. There, Outside the third floor of the building was a man standing the package was handed to the man by the cyclists who were performing stunts while handing the package.

A cyclist broomed the cargo to end the trip to inaugurate stage of Google’s annual developers conference. Sergey Brin kicked this off with the support of various Google executives.

The package that was roaming on the trip was finally been delivered to Sergey Brin. The package was opened than to introduce an “Explorer” version of the glasses. The news is that the developers outside the firm are now allowed to buy this version by spending $1,500. This is a developer version, which in out sight requires different brains.

The consumer can buy this product within two years.

Brin asked for the support of developers by stating “This is really new technology and we really want all of you to help shape it.”

What this Google Glass would have?

Google Glasses is made to feature a built-in camera, speaker, wireless connectivity to Internet and a microphone.
The glasses will have a mini screen, which is helpful to refer to the text messages and e-mails. It can also show the other reading formats from Internet.
Google glasses will be alot useful for snapping a quick picture, so that we do not miss a second of the great subject.

Brin Also ssaid that the working phase that has now almost become real was just a nutty idea.

I as an author feel, this is just as same as the story behind Google Earth. At that time, Google Earth was also one of its kind and same we can say about Google Glasses. Google Glasses will make the life more easier and handsfree. Brin also said that he wears the prototype pair almost everyday for long periods. He also said, to make the glasses more consumer oriented they would need to frame it more consumer friendly. For this, they have been talking to various eyewear designers for various ideas about the product.

According to Brin, the Glass team has worked priorly more by focussing on various internet tasks. But once it is out at the market, later we can see other add ons like Face recognition etc. The Glass team also made the point that the glasses would be more over friendly for text messages and emails only. Reading long e books may not be much of the easier option.

Babak Parviz, Google Glass Team Head, said that the glass is made to communicate and gain quick information over the Internet.

Parviz also added, “It allows you to walk downtown Paris and have other people experience this with you live,” Parviz said. But even though we have this social camera showing the world through your eyes, the quick access to information is also a critical thing.”

Sony Acquires Gaikai Cloud Gaming

Today Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that they will be purchasing Gaikai, the cloud gaming service for $380. Gaikai was first established back in 2008 and has created a worldwide cloud-streaming service that provides a variety of games to a range of devices via the internet.

Once the purchase has gone through Sony will be looking to create its own cloud game service. Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. explains:

“By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences,”- “SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.”

As always the acquisition is subject to certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

BVCA calls on Tech City to have more experienced hands

More ‘grey hairs' are needed for London’s Tech City to succeed in the long run, according to the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVCA).

More mentoring and advice is needed from experienced entrepreneurs and investors for the start-ups which now populate large areas of East London, a new report from the Centre for London and BVCA suggests. The new study, A Tale of Tech City, looks at the technology cluster that has sprung up in East London, which has been dubbed 'Silicon Roundabout', and aims to examine the challenges that exist. Its key finding suggests that there is a 'significant demand' from Tech City-based entrepreneurs for mentors and advice to support the growth of their businesses. This advice, the report says, is particularly aimed at the process of seeking institutional investment through seed capital and funding rounds. The report draws comparisons with Silicon Valley, which it says has a superior network of 'seasoned entrepreneurs and angel and venture capital investors’. Under its 'access to finance' section the report finds that there is a lack of understanding of the digital sector by financiers and, on the other side of the fence, a lack of knowledge of how to raise finance. The BVCA and Centre for London also say that the attention from Downing Street towards the promotion of the area, along with the role of the Tech City Investment Organisation, is creating 'wariness about the misaligned incentives' To ratify the situation the study suggests that East London's existing professional networks should develop mentoring activities and meet-ups for younger firms. Furthermore, it proposes that angel and venture capital firms relocate to East London as well as high street banks developing specialist digital economy offerings. Mark Florman, CEO of the BVCA, says, 'There is no longer any dispute that we have the makings of a genuine, world class, technology hub on our doorstep. Adobe: No Flash for You, Android 4.1

The bells tolling the death of Adobe Flash got a bit louder this week.

To go along with the arrival of Google’s new Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” update, Adobe has announced that it will not be developing a certified version of Flash for Android 4.1. Worse for Flash fans, Adobe says it will soon be pulling Flash Player from the Google Play Store.

The move shouldn’t be a huge surprise. Adobe already announced last year that it would cease development of its mobile Flash Player. Still, if you were hoping Google might give Flash a bit of a reprieve by including support in the latest version of Android, well, we’ve got bad news for you.

Beginning Aug. 15, Adobe plans to start limiting access to Flash in the Google Play Store to mobile devices that already have Flash installed. In other words, if your Android phone shipped with Flash installed — what Adobe refers to as a “certified version” of mobile Flash — then you can keep getting updates through the Google Play Store. If you’re planning to buy a new phone running Android 4.1, you won’t be installing Flash after the fact.

The reasoning behind the move is that any devices that don’t have Flash Player installed out of the box are, in Adobe’s words, “increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store.”

There is a way around the new limitations if you’re a developer who needs access to Flash (or, presumably, a user who doesn’t mind hacking your phone): Flash Player for Android will remain available in Adobe’sarchive of released Flash Player versions. Also, little birds flying around Google I/O this week tell us that the Flash plugin actually does seem to work with Android 4.1. If you’d like to try it for yourself, better hurry up and grab it while you can.

Flash Update Causing Problems for Firefox Fans

If you’ve been having trouble watching Flash movies in Firefox, you’re not alone.

dobe released Flash Player 11.3, with support for secure sandboxing in Firefox. Flash’s near ubiquity makes it a popular target for web-based attacks, but the new sandboxing means that even when such attacks succeed the damage is limited and won’t spill over into the rest of the browser or even the operating system.

Unfortunately for some Firefox fans, the Flash 11.3 update has also caused numerous problems.

Webmonkey has received quite a bit of email from users over the last few days, reporting everything from videos that won’t play to screen freezes and outright browser crashes. Most of the problems seem to affect Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, which suggests the new security sandboxing might be part of the problem.

The problem is widespread enough that Mozilla has addressed it directly, telling users that the company isworking with Adobe to fix it.

In the mean time the only real solution is to downgrade to Flash 11.2. If you happen to have Real Player installed there is a more extensive workaround, but for everyone else Mozilla’s suggestion is to “uninstall Flash 11.3 and downgrade to Flash 11.2.” The Firefox Help Center has instructions for those with Real Player installed as well as those whose only option is to return to the more stable Flash 11.2.

Google Wallet launched, brings NFC payments to smartphones

Google has launched Google Wallet , an Android app that turns your smartphone into a mobile payment system. The company announced the service in May and partnered with Citi, MasterCard, First Data, and Sprint to make it possible for you to tap, pay, and save using your phone with Near Field Communication (NFC).

The service appears to already be active in some markets. GigaOm snapped a photo of a Google Wallet-enabled pay station at a coffee shop in San Francisco earlier today. PCMag found a similar terminal at a local American Eagle store, although this unit lacked the Google branding.

Last week Google posted a teaser video for Google Wallet featuring George Costanza from the popular 90s sitcom Seinfeld. In the short, George attempts to stuff a note about the service into his own overflowing wallet which promptly explodes, sending receipts and other notes flying through the air. The clip ends with the phrase "Goodbye, wallet. The phone will take it from here."

Mastercard held a press event in New York City last week to show off Google Wallet, which was expected to launch "this month," according to CNET. As of writing, only the Google Nexus S 4G on Sprint will be compatible with the service but other NFC-enabled smartphones will be added to the lineup soon.

Google Wallet is supposed to make it easier for consumers to pay for and save on the goods they want, while giving merchants more ways to offer coupons and loyalty programs to their customers.

At first, Google Wallet will only support Citi MasterCard and a Google Prepaid Card, which you'll be able to fund with another payment card. This means you'll be able to tap your phone to pay wherever MasterCard PayPass is accepted. Google Wallet will also sync your Google Offers, which you'll be able to redeem via NFC at participating SingleTap merchants, or by showing the barcode as you check out.

The mobile app will be able to store your credit cards, offers, loyalty cards, and gift cards, without the bulk or additional weight. When you tap to pay, your phone will also automatically redeem offers and earn loyalty points for you. Google hopes the app will one day store things like boarding passes, tickets, ID, and keys.
