Silvio Berlusconi's 'James Bond-style' underground cave

2012-09-14T02:10:00.002-07:00

Silvio Berlusconi's summer retreat on Sardinia's exclusive Costa Smeralda, which gained notoriety for parties with topless models, features an underground cave, complete with an emergency escape exit to the sea.
The existence of the cave at the former Italian prime minister's Villa Certosa estate had been rumoured for years but the first photographs of it emerged on Friday.
They were obtained by Antonello Zappadu, an Italian photographer who made his name in 2009 by taking long-lens pictures of scantily-clad showgirls at Mr Berlusconi's residence.
The cave, which could have come straight out of a James Bond film, features a swimming pool, its floor decorated with a mosaic of Poseidon, the god of the sea, holding a trident.
It is connected to a short tunnel and a gate which reportedly leads straight to the sea.
The cave is connected to the rest of the villa by stairs and a passageway, which are illuminated by discreetly placed lights set into the floor.
The underground complex is believed to have been built in 2004 but has never been seen publicly.
"It was the secret services who asked me to carry out the work, after I had received 38 death threats," Mr Berlusconi explained at the time.
He said he had sought advice on the design and construction from Pietro Lunardi, a cabinet colleague who was then the minister for infrastructure and insisted that no planning regulations had been broken.
Mr Zappadu, who now lives in Colombia, said on his blog that he had obtained the images from an anonymous source.
The semi-submerged cave is not the only flamboyant feature at Villa Certosa, a 150-acre estate where Mr Berlusconi has hosted the likes of Tony Blair and Vladimir Putin.
He once built an artificial volcano in the grounds of the villa to entertain guests at one of his parties.
A week ago he injured his shoulder and wrist after taking a tumble at the villa, although his personal doctor said the damage was not serious.
Mr Berlusconi, who turns 76 this month, stepped down in November when Italy became immersed in the eurozone crisis and after his reputation was damaged by a series of sex scandals, most notably involving allegations that he paid for sex with an under age prostitute at "bunga bunga" parties at his mansion in Milan.
Karima El Mahroug, better known by her stage name Ruby the Heart Stealer, and Mr Berlusconi both deny the charges. The ongoing trial is not expected to finish until the autumn with dozens of witnesses due to testify including George Clooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Mr Berlusconi and his allies have dropped heavy hints that he is planning to contest Italy's next elections, which are expected in April when Mario Monti, the caretaker prime minister, is expected to step down.
It would be his fourth stint as prime minister, although his People of Freedom party currently only has around 20 per cent of the vote.

2012-01-17T07:53:00.000-08:00

We're back in the UK, with a new movie premiere, a memorable debut that made the audience to speak for days.
Given the title and the poster could expect a documentary about dinosaurs hatched out of the Extra section, or a movie Jurassic Park-style action instead we are faced with a story infinitely better than raw. From the first scene shows the hardness of the film express Peddy Considine , for the first time behind the camera after a career as an actor: the alcoholic Joseph, in the throes of a tantrum, hitting her beloved dog to death Bluey and the next moment he kneels to ask forgiveness while the animal is lying on the ground in agony. We are located on the outskirts of London, where our protagonist lives and spends his days getting drunk in pubs, without working and always ready to burst into uncontrolled violence. It devastated the soul of Joseph, after every violent act that takes refuge in sorrow and solitude. A self-destructive instinct which has deep roots in a life that is reserved only disappointments and sorrows, marked by the loss of a loved and hated his wife, nicknamed the " Tyrannosaur ", because, being a woman of flesh, when he climbed the stairs caused a tremor that shakes the cup was the same as if coming directly from the tyrannosaurus rex jurassic park. Of this life, Joseph tries to unravel physically memories, and then take refuge in his inner silence perched on an old armchair in the garden among the ruins of the destroyed objects. The meeting, seemingly random, with the good Samaritan and a believer Hannah seems to be a good time to change his life. In fact, the strong faith of Hannah is just an escape for a woman married to an abusive husband, jealous, sexually perverse. The two souls torn apart, although with the initial distrust of Joseph against the woman too good and perfect, will come together, perhaps even able to redeem himself.

2012-01-17T07:51:00.000-08:00

The Deep Blue Sea is the focus of the first film screened at the Auditorium in Rome on October 28.
Before the screening began the director Terence Davies, visibly moved, he greeted the crowd and introduced the film with some touching words: "This is a film about nature, a love that somehow can not be given back. There are three people who love each other but it is a kind of love that destroys, but true love is to say, if you're happy without me I let you go. Only in this way has the courage to continue. Love is very human. "
In the film we find ourselves faced with a love triangle: Hester, William and Freddie. Hester, charming young wife of Supreme Court Justice Sir William Collyer, lives all the privileges that life offers lucky in London in the '50s. But when he meets the young ex-RAF pilot Freddie Page decides to change his life completely. The film, from an entirely female perspective, what drives a woman to leave a husband who is good and that makes us live in a state economically prosperous, a former pilot with the vices of alcohol. Freddie Hester test a strong feeling, inexplicable to human reason and ineffable, because it is difficult to understand how a woman is willing to suffer not only the opinion of the people, but also a life devoid of ease and without being romantically reciprocated in full. Hester For this love is an overwhelming force, an addiction so strong that vital push to have attempted suicide in the first scene, just because its Freddie had forgotten his birthday. The young driver is completely different from her husband, that makes them feel the emotions are extremely physical and carnal. Exchanged their first kiss passionately in a bar, the two lovers become increasingly complicit up to give themselves physically to one another. Hester evidence on his skin shivers of love, the elderly husband who had never given her during their marriage based on a very conventional routines. Meanwhile, the couple go to visit William's mother, a lady very bigoted and exteriority that gives importance only to the social and with whom will be confronted about the opposite idea of passion, considered as an error, in any field, to replace an enthusiasm to content. When her husband discovers that his wife has a lover's begs the question "how can you throw away something so big for such a small thing?" , but his marriage to Hester is pure exteriority and her lover is not just a fling . We are thus faced with a woman who, despite his young age, he is fully aware of the risks they run, but decided to gamble everything to Freddie, the man he calls " he is my life , "his life. But things between the two lovers do not go as she wants because Freddie does not invest in their relationship to the amount of time and passion that she would like. Hester comes to suicide groped, what offense punishable at the time, only for a small lack of Freddie. When the lover discovers things happened between the two young men rush, he does not want to give her what she wants: a perfect and pure love. The husband, hearing of the attempted suicide of his wife, visited her to try to help her and also hopes to convince her to go home to him, trying to investigate the reasons for the relationship with another man and the response "He gives me sometimes only his body " , is shocked, confused, unable to understand how a woman can love only sex.

Sunday Bloody Sunday - Focus UK - Chiara Ferrante

2012-01-17T07:49:00.000-08:00

Joe Schlesinger signed a cinematic masterpiece became a landmark for its time, Sunday Bloody Sunday, 1971 . The film tells the story of a complicated love triangle between three Londoners, Glenda Jackson, Peter Finch and Murray Head, which shows not only the gay world with ease but above illustrates and tries to understand the complexity of human behavior. A daring film, perhaps too much so for the time.
Bob is a young designer who lives two bisexual love affairs simultaneously with a lawyer in London, Alex (played by Glenda Jackson) and a doctor jew, Daniel (played by a talented Peter Finch). The two lovers are aware of the existence of others, but prefer to endure the situation for fear of losing Bob. Alex and Daniel are forced to be what they are not really in their work and with their families, but they can really show themselves only in contact with Bob. For Alex, their relationship is a lifeline than its general failure in life, from childhood distress that characterized his early years of marriage gone wrong, but Bob Daniel is an escape from his strict Jewish education and a point of call to free her repressed nature. The situation, however, when Bob rushes suddenly announced his departure for the United States, providing for her two lovers, older than he is in search of existential and emotional stability, great suffering and an incredible emptiness.
In addition to a formidable cast in which stand the three protagonists, there are several minor roles filled by those who are now major players such as Daniel Day-Lewis, Peggy Ashcroft and Maurice Denham.
Of great importance in the film are the places where the events take place. The house of each of the protagonists and the environment in which they live tell us much about them: Alex lives in a flat, large, home to a professional young man without roots, but the home of Daniel is very elegant and perfectly mirrors the His sensitive soul and his generosity in helping others, and finally the home of Bob perfectly reflects his profession and his social class, being a small apartment which is also the artist's studio.
