I have wanted to get back into my horse drawing for a long time and the other night I did just that. This drawing was done in pencil, Conte crayon and acrylic paint. It is fairly big ( 30 x 40" ) and is ready to be transferred to canvas.

Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01397392035434729015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6773103399033247269.post-62530834441505496572013-01-02T08:49:00.002-08:002013-01-02T08:49:56.225-08:00

A very kind woman recently remarked that I am a master of watercolor and for that kindness I am truly thankful. But. I am concerned that the term 'master' carries with it an implication or indictment of finality, that in mastering something there is no longer anything in the medium to be discovered. One of the reasons that watercolor fascinates is the possibility of something new. Bob Ross spoke of "happy accidents " and that happiness is something I look forward too.
I was recently asked to speak on Western Art at the University of Colorado. In the course of our discussion I was asked why I am doing these paintings and I was hard-pressed to find an answer. I love the plains of Colorado and Wyoming and am fascinated by the skies we see in the West. But I have come to realize that it's that line that defines the meeting of Sky and Earth that I am most interested in.
This view of the Taylor River , north of Gunnison, Colorado is a good example of what I am going through right now. My landscapes are starting to be more abstract and largely seem to address the horizon. But I love the way that water, be it in the form of creeks or rivers cuts through the land and the way that trees break up the sky and show light in their leaves. This feels like a learning period and I find that very exciting.
The buffalo and shadow in this painting were laid in as a rough sketch, my intent being to render them in a more finished manner.
One tends to take for granted that which becomes familiar and I am no exception. Having lived all my life in the West I reckon I look to other places to find beauty. It is especially gratifying then, when people from other regions remark on how beautiful the western United States must be. It is doubly so when I can be a small part of that message.

Artists from the area submitted proposals and were juried in to this event. The cats will be displayed throughout the Denver metro area in the Spring and Summer and auctioned off later in the year.
My design is titled "Memphis" and is inspired by a cat I knew that would sit amongst the rose bushes and just watch the world go by. It is interesting to see these photos from a couple of days ago and compare them to the painting on the easel right now. This painting seems to be working and that feels good. Working on this piece reminds me of when I was a kid and was very happy just drawing. The pure act of drawing, no mistakes, no frustrations if it didn't turn out right, just drawing.Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01397392035434729015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6773103399033247269.post-12020511681673634372010-11-12T06:32:00.000-08:002010-11-12T06:43:50.344-08:00Okay, now we start to add some color. I am doing this by adding thin glazes of color and gradually building up color. Clouds have always fascinated me , from down here they appear to have mass and even be solid. They catch and reflect light much as we would expect but, being gaseous they fill with light and glow in a way that is quite unique and I find this challenging and exciting.Greghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01397392035434729015noreply@blogger.com0
