A Prelude to the Unicorn Banshee Cyan Psycho Frame Version

After chasing my dissatisfaction with my Strike Freedom, I had assembled two kits with a bang over the weekend when I was sick. Needless to say and pardon me, without any hesitation, I snap fitted this kit in a haste over a day. And immediately the next morning, I was already painting the kit.

For now, here are 2 pics that I have posted. I promise to post more and give elaborate details about the kit and show what you can get from out of the box.

De-mechanizing A Strike Freedom

The striking thoughts finally paid-off. But a lot of unneccessary stuff happened. I got sick (my stomach was upset) and tons of tedious tasks had to be accomplished in the office.

Anyway, as I have completed painting and customizing this kit, I still find it lacking something. It doesn't have the wow factor. I am a bit disppointed maybe because it's only a No-grade kit. I have painted this differently because the original blue and dark blue with red and white color makes the kit look funky and weird. I don't know why, but my eyes find it not appealing. So to make the kit more serious looking, I have painted it with silver and metallic graphite finish.

There is nothing so much special on the modification that I have done on this kit. It's just a custom paint and a touch of little details on the legs. I added pistons and exhaust vents.

To keep the legs from looking too dull and plain, I added an exhaust vent. Likewise pistons on the shins. It took me quite some time to cut out the assembly to make way for the openings but I guess it's worth it.

Well, for the review, I leave it to Haro. And I guess he has nothing much to say......

It's not that bad, but good enough for a no-grade kit.

The dragoons compensated for its lack of character. I wish I had bought the MG version.

Striking Thoughts on Freedom

At the end of the first working week of the new year last Friday, I passed by a hobby store on my way home. For some reason or whatever and with the small amount of cash at hand, a sudden surge of impulse cause me to buy this no grade Strike Freedom. Only then I realized I made a some sort of a stupid mistake of buying it. After a couple of master grades that I have already started assembling, it made me ponder that when I snap fitted this kit, there's nothing special about it. It only just took me more than 4 hours of the night to do it. I don't mean to bash or insult this kind of kit but probably it's because I was expecting so much like the details I had dealt with the MG kits. Believe me, I have already built before a couple of non-grade kits from the 00 Gundam series but the details and build of the kits are quite far and progressive from the Seed Series. I checked the manual of the Strike Freedom and it was produced in year 2005.

Now, the striking question lies in my head on how am I going to customise it? Maybe within the next couple of days I may have the answer.

HGUC Gundam Unicorn Banshee

MG Gundam Exia Carbon Graphite Gold Frame

Here is the review of the MG Gundam Carbon Graphite Gold Frame. Quite long for a description. Nonetheless, this kit that I have during the vacation caught my interest on the inner frame of the kit. This is the reason why apart from giving much attention on the paint job of the armor, I put more effort on the details of the frame. Thus, I painted it with a mixture of gold and metallic graphite to achieve the effect.

No more blah blah since I know within the gunpla community I think it would be stupid for anyone not to know about the Exia. Tons of pictures and videos are all over the net. But anyway, here are the pictures. Before I forget, this is not an Ignition Mode. I'm just a bit fortunate that I was able to put the LED lights of the GN Twin Drive from my 00 Raiser. Not to mention, both units really share the same GN drives! I didn't put much of the decals so it will not overpower the paint job and the frame's details.

And the battle rages on....operation desert storm

Of all its details, this inner frame of the thigh is particularly the I one love the most whether exposed or with the translucent armor cover. It's just really cool.

To save this post for any redundancy, I think I just have to let the figures speak for themselves. Countless reviews have already been circulating around the gunpla community. No wonder this kit is way too popular! Thanks for your time viewing!

Out of the Box: MG Gundam Exia

I just can't get out from the hang of it so I let the the MG Gundam Exia out after the snap fit and decided to square it off with my Tieren. A preview of what I'll add up on my next post.

Tieren Desert Storm Ground Type 1:100

This kit has been a typical playing ground for experimenting different types of weathering from soft to hard and battle damages. This kit is so popular from the 00 gundam series that is used by the Human Reform League in its ground warfare with the celestial beings. It has enormous amount of photos floating around the net so I won't bother to post here any out of the box pics to avoid redundancy.

I think this has been the kit that I have assembled quickest so far. It took me a day to snap-fit the parts together. Then another day to paint the entire thing, and lastly, another full day to put weathering and battle damages. Unfortunately, after completing it, it took me weeks before to post it here. Another kit in the pipeline caught my attention and I have left the Tieren standing on the shelf collecting dust.

Thanks to the runners of my MG Shin Musha, it has extra lots of parts and I was able to salvage its spiked flail mace. Then I added a chain to hold it together.

Here is a work in progress photo of the kit prior to the weathering. I have changed its color with a hue of beige but the effect of articial lighting makes it on the side of the green. But during the cast of a natural daylight it looks more of a sand beige. The photos way below show the effect somehow.

This battle damage incurred shows an exposed circuit board that I engraved on the kit. I used some computer RAM from my pc and placed it inside the armor :)

For a No-grade kit it has great articualtion form the waist, shoulders, arms and legs.

There's a lot of interest that lingers in my imagination on how you will weather it and even battle daamge effects!

Gundam Unicorn "Ver Ka" Metallic Inox Steel Finish

The review of this Unicorn Ver Ka really took me some time to post during the holiday season. Although I had already finished doing the kit, my daughter got sick and I had to look after her. But anyway, because this kit is way popular and a lot of photos floating around the net, I didn't bother to pound this post with tons of out of the box pics. Secondly, I have to admit in advance that I'm disappointed with this kit. I mean there is one particular thing that turned me-off. Its articulation. . I bet most of the poses you will see around the net, this unicorn is just standing. Of course, with the use of an action base you can play around with its poseability but in terms of the legs movability, personally its a failure in my opinion.

The kit is outstandingly cool. The design and concept itself is stunning but it definitely has failed in the articulation of its legs. The legs can bend a bit around say 20-30 degrees the most but it can not do more than that. I reckon the poseability of my other non-grade kits has beaten this kit. Even my Gundam Virtue with his full armor can beat the Unicorn's leg in its articulation. A shame for being an MG. So if you're a big fan of articulation, this kit is not for you. I checked the legs' joint if I can modify it, but I think I have to do a lot of extensive study first before I do it. Plus, it will require an enormous amount of time. But for now here are the pics:

You may wonder why I have a different kind of sabers here in the Unicorn mode. I borrowed the one I have in the Gundam Virtue. I like its translucent red color than the pink of the unicorn.

I played with the paint job. I did not stick with the plain white color. So I had used a metallic silver with graphite mixture and added a honey gold accent in the V-fins and feet. It's some sort of a brushed stainless steel-so it's not the typical tintanium finish you can see in the hobby stores. I also tinkered with the bazooka's cylinders with blue metallic accent.

It took me a day to apply the decals. It's sure a bit a pain in the a**! to put the dry transfers. Lastly, I applied some streaks of weathering to the kit and especially to the shield.

Poseability 2/10

Grrr! I hate the legs movement. My non grade kits can beat the hell out of this thing.

Excitement 8/10

Well there is an excitement when you're staring at it. It looks as if there is more into it.

Design 10/10

I have to say the design is really awesome but in one aspect the functionality failed it. You know what I mean.

They're great to detail. No doub about it.

That psycho frame stuff is the selling point of this kit. I'll give it an 8.

MG Gundam Sandrock EW Roll-Out Color Version

Definitely there is no denying that I was eagerly itching to paint this kit after I had snapped-fit it a few days ago. After this is I'll be back to my destroy mode to finally wrap up the Unicorn. Anyway, here is the so called roll-out version - ala Exia roll-out color that I also previously did with the Gundam Virtue. At first, I thought of retaining the original white color of the OOB because it's already a bit fine. It has a sort of off-white but still quite "plasticky" when stared at. So I then proceeded in painting it.

The customisation I had made revolved only with the paint job. I had painted it with a flat grey and graphite. Metallic blue and honey gold for the accents. Later on, I applied soft weathering. Then of course the decals. Photos are all raw - no photoshop tricks here.

I tinkered with the B/W of my camera. Hmmmm... quite serene or dramatic for a portrait.

I honestly admit that I'm not a fan of the wing series after I assembled my Deathscythe Hell Custom (HG) - for some reason it's another story. But these heat shotels really come striking to the eyes and have changed my thoughts. It's probably one of the selling points of this kit. I have added some streaks of metal scratches to the handles to accentuate a bit the weathering.

If looks could kill. Seems harmless but its sinister stance is something else.

This leg below says it all. I didn't expect the frame to have this kind of articulation. So I had put an extra effort to detail it.

Poseability 8/10

The poseability is great when stretched to the limit. I mean you can have more poses with the good articulation of the leg. It would be great especially if you use an action base.

The is really there. I finished the kit in 5 days every after my work from the office. It's a total 5 days and 4 nights! Lol!

Design 7/10

There is really nothing special about the concept. It's not that unique at all but I think the weapons compensated for its looks.

Out of the Box - MG Gundam Sandrock EW

Here it is! , MG Gundam Sandrock EW from the Gundam Wing Series. Staright out of the box after I've snapped fitted it. I have to admit that I temporarily froze the work on my Unicorn "Ver Ka". It took the whole night to assemble the kit. I didn't put any decals yet since I will soon paint it anyway. And just a preview and I have to say, it has a pair of sexy but a "kick-ass" heat shotels. Plus its shield is awesome!

Nice poses and cool to look at! This Sandrock had really rocked my night away when I assembled it.

Some kind of struts to display. The legs and arms have good articulation too!

Enjoy the pics for now.... I might probably work on it right away and custom paint it!

A Glimpse of the Gundam Unicorn "Ver Ka" Metallic Inox Steel Finish

While I was on my way of trying to complete MG Gundam Unicorn "Ver Ka", the Banshee Unicorm suddenly popped out at the end of the scene in the episode 4 of the Unicorm series. Grrrr! that Banshee surely looks astonishingly cool. Apparently, the HGUC Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode versions will be rolled-out by Bandai this coming January 2012 according to gundam.info as shown in the picture way below.

Here (above) is by the way the progress I have made with my Unicorn - so called Metallic Inox Steel Finish. I custom painted it with a mixture of carbon graphite and silver to achieve a diffrent effect so it's NOT glossy like the typical Titanium Finish that Bandai released. Though the details are not yet really visble here in the photo. I will post more detailed photos in the future once I have completed the kit. So far I have only put a couple of decals and have to weather it. The weapons too are yet to be assembled.

Assault Virtue Roll-Out Color Version 1:100

Here it is as promised. Gundam Virtue 1:00 Review. Among the other units of the 00 gundam series Exia, Dynames, and Kyrios, the Gundam Virtue has caught my attention in the episode 10 when this mammoth size bulk purged its armor. Its massiveness may not be typically attractive but I find this kit interesting.

I was itching to buy this kit before but the stocks were usually unavailable. Until last month I was able to grab one. Surprisingly, its price is the same as other MG kits. I really don't know why until I had opened the box and found lots of runners! It should have been an MG. Only the absence of an inner frame has classified it as a No-grade. Nontheless, this kit is fun to build and customize.

Out of the box, after I have snap-fitted everything, the kits looks plain but amusing to play with. Although its plastic look made me decided to custom paint it.

A video clip below in Episode 10 of Season 1 in the 00 gundam series is a delight to watch while the armor is purging to pieces.

The customisations I made in the kit were simple and not many. Apparently, the custom paint job is one of them. It has dark grey and blue accents. I also added a bit of a soft weathering because I don't want to mess up the paint job. Next, is the electronic curcuit board that I exposed on the legs in lieu of the typical rubber that Bandai includes in the 00 series kits. And lastly, the most important of all is the booster pack that took me some quite time to do. The availability of an approriate booster is the one thing that kept me on hold to finish the kit.

As the armor purges, Nadleeh breaks loose! I discarded the original white color and painted it with silver. Likewise, I added weathering but not much.

And here is the odd thing, I tried to experiment on the plasticky hair since I am not quite satisfied with. I tried to use the bristle of my broom at home. It is locally called as "walis tambo" which is extracted from tiger grass. Anyway, I am not still convinced on how I achieved the effect of the bristles should sway. It's quite the opposite because the bristles lack softtness.

Poseability 8/10

If we are going to limit the poseability to Virtue alone, certainly the score will be much lower. But with Nadleeh compensating the articulation, it's decent enough to give this chunky kit an 8.

Why Snap Fit?

Why Snap Fit? A review of 00 Gundam Raiser No-grade 1:100 has the answers why I rebuilt it. Certainly if you're going to simply make an out of the box build and not go beyond it then there is nothing to talk about it except of course certain ways on how to make a smooth and clean straight-build. But there are questions come to play on why do we commonly Snap-Fit our kits.

What will be the Paint/Color Scheme? Visualisation takes a better place once the model is in the palm of your hands after the snap fitting it. Choosing which kind of color will suit or not in each part of the kit gives you a more in-depth idea and concept so that it can be more tailored to your taste. It's also good to take a picture. I even play with the colors in photoshop so I can imagine vividly the colors.

Any Modifications? If you're a hard core gunpla maker then snap fitting is a sure kind of way to study all the parts- proportions, scale, articulations, etc. before starting the mods. This method really takes out a hell of imagination and artistic sense. And sometimes it's a make or break thing when dealing with mods. I have seen some awesome modifications and messy ones. So if you want take it to another level then snap fitting before the mods is the way to go.

Which Part/s to Paint or not? During the time when I built my first kit, I was so eager to custom paint it. Not paying attention to the value of snap fitting. A grave mistake! I painted each part first before assembling them. And when assembling took place.... there are parts that are so difficult to fit together. It was because I even had painted the pegs and some of the joints. Bandai was so damn good that the parts are really measured to last millimeter so that when fitting the parts they snap perfectly.

Then, I finally realized that I had ruined my first kit's paint job after I had already assembled other kits. So I decided to rebuild it and fix the paint job. I disassembled and painted again the messed-up parts. So the photos you see here are my 00gundam's re-incarnation. The Raiser is not yet finished so for now here they are. No photoshop tricks here... these are all raw pics:)

Of course since it is a No-grade I didn't expect much from it. But I will decently give it a score of 6.

Excitement 6/10

Hmmm, nothing much to get excited about but it's fair to say that after I have repainted it, it gave me another shot of interest in having fun looking at the kit.

Design 7/10

A No-grade after all..... the design is quite interesting when you look at the kit. It may be a love or hate it kind of thing but it's not bad at all. Unless you go for the MG version, then that'sa different kind of story.

Weapons 3/10

Poor weapons. This kit has only two swords apart from the standard beam sabers.

Detail 4/10

Details are not sufficient enough. I have to humbly admit that this is not an MG version.

Gunpla Assembly Icon Guides

Ever wondered what are those icons in our gunpla manuals? I had came accross to this image below. (Gosh I forgot what the site was.) Hopefully, the translations will speak for the icons themselves. Especially, if you're a newbie in dealing with the different parts of the runners, gates, and etc. I remember my first encounter in assembling my new kit. I was quite hesitant at that time in every gate that I cut and every part that I snap fit. the instruction manual was really Japanese and solely intended for Japan use only - as Bandai had written in cover.

Full Cloth Shin Musha - Sengoku Jin Version 2

As I had posted earlier, here is now the complete review of my Shin Musha. It's not the actual Sengoku Jin kit that normally you would buy in the market but I have created my own version on top of the basic Shin Musha kit. Initially, I was itching to buy an Exia MG kit from the 00 series. But whata hell... I found this kit that caught my attention. There was however a Sengoku Jin available, but it was really quite pricey. Anyway, why not create a sort of a diorama that will be a customized version?

After tinkering with the parts of the unit including the kind and colors of the paint to be used, it took me more than 2-3 weeks to finish everything. Of course, I have to deal with the kit only after my work from office which I have to spend up to the wee hours of the night to assemble the kit.

If you are planning to buy this kit, you won't regret having this. It's one of the gunplas that has a good stance even by merely just having it stand on its own without any action poses. The itself looks cool and menacing! Other kits look awful when standing alone and you have to add some poses just to make them look good. But this thing with or without any kind of pose, it's great to look at.

This kit was so cool that the photo you see above is a Full Cloth version that I conceptualize in this kit. ( I included more shots below) I added a piece of black cloth and put it on top of him - a sort of a repair mode. This samurai-armored Shin Musha Gundam from the "Gundam Musou Special" PS2 was based on Hajime Katoki's design. The super-poseable inner frame from the Master Grade RX-78-2 Gundam Version One Year War 0079 provides an array of posing possibilities, a well-jointed shoulder- and skirt armor assist with movability without getting in the way. Weapons included are its Nichirinmaru katana with sheath, Denkoumaru naginata, Sankoumaru jumonji yari, and a Tanegashima gun. The blades in the weapons have silver mekki plating - a chorme effect! Stickers and Gundam decals are provided for added detail. Later on once I have the time I'll put another post about the torii that I have made. Enjoy the pics!

I reckon the kit will not fail you in whatever poses you experiment with it. Form its hand since it's an MG, the fingers are all ball-jointed so you can play with the weapons in whatever way you want them handled. The inner frame is the plus gactor here especially in the legs which you can see in my previous post.

It's indeed really fun! The kit has lots of poseablity that it took me hours to get photos of different stance.

Design 8/10

The design is quite utterly unique compared to other gunpla kits. Whether you put on the armor or not, the kit is awesome. The peculiarity of the concept makes it stand out!

Weapons 9/10

Lots of weapons to enjoy! The chrome plated Nichirinmaru katana is really great and fun to paint its handle and sheat. The katana in the photos are not edited. It's the reflection of the light from my living room.

A Prelude to Full Cloth Shin Musha

I am posting now some test shots to a Full Cloth Shin Musha that I am still currently working. It's probably almost nearing its completion. I tried to make some poses and gave a thought of some of its other potentials. Anyway, here is a couple of other photos. I just really love the details of the pistons in its leg. One attribute that cuts an MG kit above the rest.

Astraea Type-F Review in Full Detail

A side story to the Gundam 00 Series is the Mobile Suite Gundam 00F. The Astraea Type-F piloted by Fon Spaak. The manga never made it to the anime. I just hope Sunrise would do someday. This is an interesting piece of model kit compared to the other Non-grade gundam kits I have seen and have assembled. This one is far better than other older MG kits or equally at par with the current MG kits nowadays. The package has lots of runners! Also, since this is a different version of the Astraea, it has some parts of the Exia as well. Most of all, I like its articulations including its weapons - GN rifle and GN bazooka!

Because I custom made this, I veered away from its stock red color. I used a different paint scheme. I prepped the kit especially the joints with graphite spray paint and then have it finished with a Yamaha Red Spray paint. The tricky part in the painting is having the two mixtures of paint react evenly together. So in effect, the red translucent paint has to eat-up with the graphite's mixture.

Only a No-grade kit but it exceeded my expectations.

Design is not bad at all. As the time has passed by, the more I have appreciated its build and quality. No doubt it shares platform with the Exia.

I really love its GN bazooka. It's definitely interesting to put a lot of effort in detailing it!

It's not an MG but I the details are not bad after all. The weapons compensate for it. Plus after the custom paint job, I think the details have been accentuated fair enough.

Deathscythe Hell Custom HG-The Review

Here is a jump to my 3rd gunpla. Not posting yet about my second one which I finished almost a month ago, I think there are some quite interesting details which I will discuss later on my next blog. I haven't had the time to post anything for quite such a long time since my 00 Raiser. But for now, here is the menacing Deathscythe Hell Custom from the Endless Waltz movie piloted by Duo Maxwell. From my experience of assembling gunpla kits of the 00 gundam series, I would say there are a lot of flaws that I have seen in the joints, articulation, and panels of the parts in this High Grade from way back 1998. I can easily compare for example like the knee articulation alone that even the No Grade version of the 00 series beats this HG. The knee cap exposes the joint way too deep. It separates from the movement of the joint. Unlike from the 00 Raiser the knee armor cap goes along with the movement of the joint. Nonetheless, it's a point of interest to anyone who would make kits from the Wing series.

But anyway, a positive thing about this kit is its look and peculiarity. Some may say its awkward because of its bat wings look a like. But personally, I find it unique and creative for the designer of this kit to conceptualize and produce this in the 90's much more so if it is an MG. I added only a few details for this kit. I put stainless cylinders on the shoulders, drilled holes on the panels, coil overs at the sides of the abdomen- these customisations I will discuss on my next blog. Paints are spray cans and gunmetal.

Poseability 6/10

An HG kit way back a decade ago from the Wing's EW movie. Fair enough to have its poseabilityquite limited before the advent of the more advanced No-grade and HG kits nowadays.

Excitement 7/10

I had excitement taking photos! I would say the kit is photogenic. The shots are somewhat terrifying to look at!

Design 6/10

The design is unique of all the gunpla concepts I have seen but the quality is not yet good at that time. How about building an MG version?

Weapons 5/10

No significant weapon. Only the scythe. But of course it has its awesomely unique wings.

Hmmmm....let's forget about it. Maybe the MG version has a better one.

Lastly, here is a preview of my second gunpla- the Astraea Type-F!

First 00 Gundam & first customized

My first customized gundam kit. Likewise I would say it's my first gundam kit as well. For a newbie, it's not that I'm bragging what I posted here but I'm just honestly proud of whatever I have customized to my 00 raiser. It took me sometime in pondering if I gonna purchase this gundam kit. I have been an avid follower of the 00 Series from the Seed Destiny Series. And now I'm hooked in the Unicorn Episodes. I have just finished watching the episode 3. And now I am eagerly awaiting the succeeding episodes to come.

Customisation took me a lot of time with my imagination in what type of paint to be used, color combination, preparations, etc. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to picture the procedures I have made just like from other sites that showed the way they assembled their kits because I was quite anxious if what I will do will be enough or okay. To give further detail, I used acrylic spray cans. The limbs which I really like, have a combination of two (2) paints. It's a combination of gold sparkle and graphite finish. Having the graphite applied first and while it is wet I sprayed on the gold sparkle in order for it to react with graphite - giving it a so called gold-carbon finish look! The rest, blue and red, are also sprayed on with my graphite finish.

So there you go.... in my next posting, I'll explain in further how I accomplished such customization. But for now, all the photos below are all raw images and are unedited! - no photoshop here or whatever photo effects and tricks.
