An earthed system has the supply neutral point connected to earth.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Shipboard main LV low voltage systems at 440v ac are normally insulated from earth ships hull similat systems ashore are normally earthed to the grounded.&lt;br /&gt;
HV high voltage systems &gt;=1000v are usually earthed to the ships hull via a neutral earthing resistor NER or through a high impedance transformer to limit earth fault current&lt;br /&gt;
The priority requirement on board ship is to maintain continuity of the electrical supply to essential equipment in the event of a single earthed fault occuring.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A circuit consists essentially of two parts&lt;br /&gt;
1.conductor, the part which carries through the circuit&lt;br /&gt;
2.insulator, the part which keeps the current inside the conductor.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

The fouling problem arises when barnacles, mussels and other lower forms of marine life as larvae enter pipework systems and settle on the internal surface of pipes where they rapidly grow and multiply.&lt;br /&gt;
In the most extreme cases, complete seawater lines can become blocked, affecting the safety and operational capability of the ship.  In other instances, the gradual restriction in the flow of seawater through cooling systems can impair engine efficiency, leading to increased fuel usage.&lt;br /&gt;
K.C. system is based on the electrolytic principle and consists of copper, aluminium and ferrous anodes which are fed with an impressed electrical current from a control panel.&lt;br /&gt;
The anode are usually mounted in pairs in the ship’s sea chest or strainer where they are in direct contact with the flow of water entering the seawater lines. Also the anodes can be mounted on independent treatment tank for other convenience. &lt;br /&gt;
In operation, the copper anode produces ions which are transported by the seawater and carried into the pipework system and equipment beyond.&lt;br /&gt;
Although the concentrations of copper in solution are extremely small i.e. less than 2 parts per billion they are sufficient to prevent marine life from setting and multiplying.&lt;br /&gt;
At the same time, the slow dissolution of the aluminium / ferrous anode produces ions which spread throughout the system and produce an anti-corrosive layer on the internal surface of pipes.&lt;br /&gt;

Although modern hull coatings can provide some protection against corrosion they seldom offer a complete solution. For this reason, most operators choose to protect their vessels with a purpose designed in impressed current cathodic protection system.&lt;br /&gt;
Using an arrangement of hull mounted anodes on Titanium and reference cells connected to automatic control panels KC’s sophisticated system produces much more powerful external current to suppress the natural electro-chemical activity on the wetted surface of the hull. This eliminates the formation of aggressive corrosion cells on the surface of plates and avoids the problem which can exit where dissimilar metals are introduced through welding or brought into proximity by other components such as propellers.&lt;br /&gt;
An essential feature of KC’s I.C.C.P. system is that it constantly monitors the electrical potential of the seawater / hull interface and efficiently control the protective current to the anodes in relation to this.&lt;br /&gt;

In this monitoring process samples of the air and vapours mixture taken continually from the crankcase of a diesel engine. This device will detect the level of oil mist concentration which must remain below level. At which explosion may occur. In case of coming to this level a warning is given to allow avoiding action to slow the engineer and prevent serious damages and explosion. &lt;br&gt;  &lt;br&gt;The presence of an oil mist in the crankcase is the result of oil vaporization caused by a "Hot spot" this hotspot is produced by other heating of any engine bearing or overheating of any other moving parts of the engine time chain or gear drives. Explosive condition can result if build up of oil mist is allowed. Hence continuous monitoring of vapours intensity is required. A diagrammatic view of an oil mist detector is shown in the sketch.&lt;br&gt;  &lt;br&gt;Measure any increase in oil mist density. The detector consists basically of two parallel tubes of equalize, each having an electric current directly proportional to the intensity of light falling on the surface. Lenses are fitted to seal the tube ends of each tube but allow light to pass. One tube is sealed to contain clean air and is termed the reference tube. The other tube is called Measuring tube, has connections through which samples of the crankcase vapours are drawn by extractor fan. If the concentration of explosive mixture is reached in the oil mist sample, light will be obscured(not clear) before reaching the cell of measuring tube, electrical balance between two cells will be disturbed and an alarm will be operated indicating excess concentrations in oil mist. Sampling points should be fitted to each cylinders crankcase and their connections are brought to a rotating selector valve which is driven from the fan motor. This repeatedly connects each sampling point  to the measuring tube in sequence.&lt;br&gt;  &lt;br&gt;In the event of oil mist being detected the rotator stops to indicate which sampling will commence again its sequence.&lt;br&gt;The detector should be checked daily and the sensitivity tested. Lenses and mirrors should be cleaned periodically. In common with all internal combustion engines the diesel engine operates with a fixed sequence of events, which may be achieved either in four strokes or two, a stroke being the travel of the piston between its extreme points. Each stroke is accomplished in half a revolution of the crankshaft.&lt;br&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; "&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;The presence of an oil mist in the crankcase is the result of oil vaporisation caused by a hot spot&lt;/b&gt;&lt;font class="Apple-style-span" size="1"&gt;. Explosive conditions can result if a build up of oil mist is allowed. The oil mist detector uses photoelectric cells to measure small increases in oil mist density. A motor driven fan continuously draws samples of crankcase oil mist through a measuring tube. An increased meter reading and alarm will result if any crankcase sample contains excessive mist when compared to either clean air or the other crankcase compartments. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;  &lt;br&gt;&lt;font class="Apple-style-span" size="1"&gt;The rotary valve which draws the sample then stops to indicate the suspect crankcase. The comparator model tests one crankcase mist sample against all the others and once a cycle against clean air. The level model tests each crankcase in turn against a reference tube sealed with clean air.
