I wanted to write a quick little post to let you in on my thoughts about blogging...

This was prompted by some not-so-nice things I read about myself and my family and this blog yesterday. At first I was upset. I felt misunderstood and definitely hurt. But, then I decided that I can't please everyone, so I'm not going to try. In the words of my wise friend John:

"Some people are just seagulls: They fly in, s*** on your site, and fly away. Don't pay 'em any attention."

That made me laugh when I was feeling a little sorry for myself yesterday afternoon. A lot of the comments were about the direction that this blog has taken since my blog turned into a career and I wanted to clear the air a bit and share my heart with you all. I also wanted this to be a disclosure of sorts since some of you are new here and may not know my blog from the early days. This is where I came from and where I'm going...

I started blogging nearly four years ago. Craig and I were newly('ish)weds at the time and I was having so much fun making our house a home - decorating, cooking, hostessing - that I felt inspired to start a blog. I read a few blogs at the time, but mostly I just wanted to have a place to store my inspiration and to document the projects I was doing around our house. This was my very first post a million years ago.

Back then I didn't even really know blogs were a "thing". I didn't know you could make money from a blog and I didn't realize just how large my community of fellow bloggers would become. I still remember the very first time a stranger (we later became friends!) left me a comment. I was elated, if not a little confused. I remember going to tell Craig, "Someone left me a comment on my blog today! Someone I don't even know!". And that was the beginning of something that was so much more than what I ever imagined.

So many of my closet friendships are a result of blogging. My career is a result of blogging. And a big part of my identity is tied to it. I blog because I love it. I blog because it makes me feel connected. I blog because it gives me an outlet: to vent, create or just be.

Now here comes the disclosure part - a few things you should know:

1. Sometimes I blog for love. Sometimes I blog for money. But, I'll always be honest.

While I still do love blogging, the fact is I also get paid to do this. As such, there will sometimes be sponsored posts on this blog. I will let you know when a product has been given to us or when I am being paid to write about a product, but I will always be truthful in sharing my opinions concerning said products. I get approached to share things often, but I only say yes to things that I truly like and/or use or that I think will be relevant or interesting to you guys.

Also, while this is my primary blog, I also write for Babble and Disney and as a contracted writer I have real deadlines, post minimums and traffic quotas. I typically write anywhere from 8-10 blog posts a week, not including the posts I write here or the videos I make. The schedule can be a little daunting to balance sometimes (especially with a toddler around) and as such I have to prioritize and my contracted work has to come first. I try really hard to still make sure that my presence here is strong though, because this blog really is my first love.

2. You're not always getting the full story.

I keep myself pretty open and honest on this blog, but I don't share everything, because well...the internet is forever and not every story is mine alone to share. Consider this blog a highlight reel, or a "best of" type of thing. Yes, I try to bring you doses of reality too, but no one wants to hear only downer moments. Plus, posts detailing the back and forth commentary of my husband and I bickering at each other aren't really all that interesting. Because of this you may get the idea that my life is 24/7 sunshine and roses, but I want to assure you that that is not the case. I really do have a very blessed life, but we deal with dirty laundry and snotty noses and the occasional name-calling from time to time too.

3. I can only share what I know.

Sometimes people get upset when I write posts that make it seem like I'm an expert on one thing or another (this post is a good example). I just want to set the record straight that whenever I share information about marriage or parenting or birth or health or whatever...I am sharing my personal experiences and what works for me and my family. Everyone is different and has different needs/wants/challenges, so I don't expect my tips and suggestions to work for everyone. In the words of the wise Ron Burgundy, "If you like it, you can take it, if you don't, send it right back." I also don't expect my content to be for everyone. If you don't like kids? This site probably won't be your cup of tea. This is a lifestyle blog and being a mom is a big part of my lifestyle currently. Does that mean being a mom is the only thing I have going in my life? Absolutely not. But, I love my kid so I'm going to talk about her. Maybe in another year I'll be bored of her and we can just talk about cute shoes (unlikely, though we can still talk shoes...), but until then this is who I am and what is important to me and I hope you'll understand that.

4. I am so thankful.

Professional blogging isn't something that I set out to achieve, but I would be lying if I told you it wasn't amazing getting paid to do what I love. I want you all to know that I feel so blessed be able to write my heart out every day and to have lovely readers like you actually take pause in their day to read the words I share. Sometimes it blows my mind that people actually even care, but I'm so thankful that you do. It is because you read my posts that I am able to work from home and spend so much time with my daughter. Unknowingly, by clicking on my posts both here and at Babble and Disney, you all have given me such a wonderful, priceless gift and you didn't even know it. So, thank you. Truly.

a disney world recap.

Consider this your fair warning: this is going to be the longest, most picturey blog post in the history of all blog posts, but I figured you might indulge me since it was my first time going to Disney World and all...and it was with a cute toddler...and I got a new camera that can actually take more than two photos at a time without my memory filling up and having to delete things (Totally infuriating by the way - always spring for the iPhone with more memory people. Always.).

So, this is a little recap of our trip to Disney World for the Hanes Comfort Summit last week.

This is where we stayed: Disney's Boardwalk Inn. It was amazing and wonderful and Disney has basically ruined me for all other hotels for the rest of my life.

We were greeted with towels in the shape of Mickey, because obviously...

And Hanes left us the sweetest gift bag. Fern was beyond thrilled with the Minnie doll and this was her first experience with a balloon. Let's just say she would like us to decorate our house in nothing but balloons from here on out.

Oh yeah...and the hotel pool? There were spray elephants and a water slide where you come out of a clown's mouth. Yep. That happened.

Our first day there, we went to Magic Kingdom. By the way...these are my parents Ana Marie and Jeff (AKA Grammy and Grandpa) - you'll be seeing a lot of them for the duration of this blog post because they are wonderful and helped make our trip so much fun.

You might note that Fern looks particularly pissed off in all of these photos, it's because Florida decided that it wanted to be elevendy billion degrees and humid like the Amazon rainforest that day. Apparently the natives thought the weather was lovely, but we are so not natives. Oregonians don't do heat.

We arrived just in time for the parade. Oh Prince Charming (are all the princes named "Prince Charming"?)!

Fern was into that. Plus she had the best seat in the house so who could complain about that?

Then there were the obligatory posey castle photos. Yet again, Fern is positively thrilled.

Small World cheered her up. We love a good air conditioned ride - especially when it's paired with singing multicultural animatronic people. A win in my book for sure.

Basically it was too freaking hot for much else so we came back later in the evening and stayed until 1:00 AM and Fern rallied like a champ.

The following day I had some scheduled Hanes sessions - learning about the brand, styling sessions and the like, so Fern and my parents hung out at the pool until the evening when we all went to Epcot for a special dinner that Hanes put on for us in the Canada area.

The food was delicious and there were a ton of fun activities for the kids: balloon art, caricatures, and face painting! We partook in them all!

Then we headed to our front row spot for the firework show right on the water while we ate Mickey Mouse shaped ice cream sandwiches. Is this real life? So cool.

The next day while I was in sessions, Fern and my parents went to Animal Kingdom and then in the afternoon my mom and I had a little mother/daughter date to Epcot.

The evening was spent at Fort Wilderness for a special dinner on the beach.

I had never been on a white sand beach. The beaches in Oregon have wet, dark colored sand. This was lovely and Fern had the best time toddling around in it.

We had some wonderful meal time entertainment.

But the best part of the evening was when Pirate Mickey & Minnie showed up and Fern was beyond thrilled to meet them.

After dinner we got to take an after hours ride on the Rockin' Roller Coaster and Toy Story.

I think Toy Story is my new favorite ride. Definitely fun for both kids and adults and a great ride to end the trip with a bang.

And there you have it! Our first trip to Disney World (a first for all of us - and we have the 1st timer buttons to prove it). Thanks for indulging me and my photo dump.

Also - a big thank you to Hanes for making our time so much fun! In addition to all the fun, I learned a ton about the Hanes brand and about all of their cool products and campaigns (Hanes isn't just plain white tees and granny panties anymore!) and I can't wait to share these things with you throughout the year!

If you're not familiar with Warby Parker (and you probably should be), here's the gist...

They are purveyors of glasses (both eyeglasses and sunglasses) that are completely on-trend, truly affordable (only $95!)...and they share the love by donating a pair of glasses to someone in need each time a pair is purchased. In addition to having a great cause behind them they are also one of the only fashion brands in the world who is carbon neutral, which makes them that much better in my book.

Also, if you live in Portland, you can check them out in person (though they do have an at-home try on option if you go the online route) because they're stopping in Portland along the route for their Warby Parker Class Trip.

I'll be heading down tomorrow try on some glasses myself (sunnies, since unfortunately I don't need eye glasses just yet, though I wish I did - truly!) and I'd love it if our paths crossed! We're away at the "happiest place on earth" (or maybe the second happiest after Disneyland...I'll let you know my opinion once we get back!), but I thought I'd pop in to show you what Fern will be wearing to commemorate the occasion...

Guess what you guys?

I've been asked to be a part of a cool new project with Hanes (yeah...as in the Hanes who makes comfy underwear and socks). They've invited me to be a part of the Hanes Comfort Crew as an ambassador and as part of this I get to attend the "Hanes Comfort Summit" this week at...wait for it...Disney World!

I'm ridiculously excited about this as I've never actually been to Disney World. It's sort of like a childhood dream realized. Now I can really weigh in on the long debated question: "Disneyland OR Disney World?"...now I'll actually have an opinion! I'm a little bummed that Craig wasn't able to get time off ork to come along with us, but I'm really excited that my parents and Fern will be coming along. She's super stoked to hang out with her BFF Minnie again. She told me so.

Anyway, basically I'll be attending the summit and learning about how to incorporate comfort into the daily routine as a parent and I could always use some more of that. And let's be real...I'm secretly hoping there's an underwear swag bag involved, because really, who doesn't love free underwear?

So, feel free to add the title of "Ambassador of Underwear" to my resume from here on out.

Can't wait to tell you guys all about it when I'm back and if you don't already follow me on Instagram for some serious overgramming (@thelittlethingswedo)!

#realmamalife: a morning with multiple.

The other morning I watched my friend Becca's two boys: Bennett (age 3) and Buckley (one-year this weekend!) while she was at a doctor appointment.

We had a lot of fun and I gained a new respect for mamas with more than one kid. WOW! You guys are awesome.

This was what Fern's room looked like afterward.

But, it was OK, because these three were so cute together!

Ever since Fern was born and motherhood and blogging kind of took over all of my free time, I haven't done as much styling work...

And while I feel completely fulfilled in my job as a mother, and totally blessed to be able to contribute to our family's income with my writing, there is a little piece of my soul that goes unfed when I don't get the chance to create beautiful things. That is why I love styling and why I miss it, when I'm away from it for awhile.

But, a couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of working on a shoot with my beautiful and talented friend Margaret Jacobsen. We've been friends for awhile now and I've long admired her work, but we had yet to work together and I'm so glad we finally got to collaborate. It was pure magic and one of the most fun shoots I've worked on. I left feeling refreshed and like a little bit of new life was breathed into my soul. So thankful to get to create.

All of the people who worked on this shoot were so lovely - perfect hair by the talented Miss Mallori, amazing makeup by Kendra Stanton, and stunning models Sarah and Stephanie. Brooke Weber of Little Canoe was so wonderful to let us shoot in her studio and all of the gorgeous jewelry was courtesy of Marisa of Seaworthy (my absolute favorite for jewelry!).

This is what Fern wore on a summer afternoon out and about...

...and I only got one photo of it, because when you have a constantly moving toddler you get really good at waiting for the perfect moment and then you snap your shot and if it's not blurry you feel like you just won the lottery and you call it a day. Why mess with perfection, right? Right.

magic in the mundane: instagram challenge.

When you hear the words "magic" and "mundane", you likely envision complete opposites.

But, recently I did a post over at Disney Baby where I rounded up photos that I felt captured "magic in the mundane". Life as a parent (or really just life in general!) can seem a bit monotonous sometimes, but if we really stop to take a look around, we will begin noticing the beauty in these little things.

This post inspired me to host an Instagram challenge where all of you lovelies can share your magically mundane moments too in an effort to really appreciate the beauty in the every day. You can read more of the details over at Disney Baby, but here's the gist:

Starting today (Monday, May 6th) until next Monday (May 13th), I want you to try to remember to go out of your way to capture the little magical moments in your day with your child/children (or if you don't have any, you can still share any magical moments you encounter!). Instagram these moments and then tag me (@thelittlethingswedo) with the hashtag #magicinthemundane added to your picture.

Tweet, Facebook, or blog about this challenge, because the more the merrier! I love challenges like this because they are so great for connecting us with other people and who couldn't use a little more connection in their lives?

10 ways to affair proof your marriage.

After Craig and I got engaged, his parents sent us to an engagement retreat. We learned a lot about marriage in all the sessions we attended, but the one that has always stuck with me most was the session we attended about "How To Affair Proof Your Marriage". Honestly, I never would've even given the potential of an affair a split second's thought before that session, but then again I think a lot of people would've felt the same. I'm pretty sure no one goes into a marriage planning to have an affair, but sadly, they still happen. I think this is largely due to the fact that we don't think about them ahead of time and safeguard our marriages against them.

Before I share this post, I would like to say that as a Christian, I really and truly do believe that my faith and my husband's faith are the strongest factors in us having a happy and healthy marriage. Sharing a like faith and being able to turn to Jesus during challenging times in our marriage is such a huge part of what makes it work. BUT, that said, God isn't a magical genie in the sky who just says "poof" and makes great marriages appear. There are plenty of practical ways that we also utilize to keep our marriage healthy, happy and affair-proof.

When you live together and see each other on a daily basis, going on real actual dates can kind of fall by the wayside, but make it a priority. Affairs happen for many reasons, one of which is that a marriage has gotten stale, boring and expected. Change things up with fun date nights to keep things fresh for both of you.

Craig and I didn't have sex before we were married - we were both virgins and as such I was pretty stoked about having a healthy (read: frequent) sex life. I remember the visions I had of what sex was going to be like and it definitely included an every day (at least once) type of schedule. Ha! After having a child, I now realize just how true Business Time by Flight of the Conchords was. Often it's the dilemma of sleep V.S. sex and let's face it, when you're a sleep deprived parent, sleep sounds way more sexy. But, make sex a priority...even if you don't feel like it. Sex is a great way to get reconnected with your partner and it's hard not to feel great afterward. Associating feel good, connected emotions with your spouse is a great way to keep your marriage on lock down from affairs.

Simply touching is just as important as sex. Take time to cuddle, hug, kiss and hold hands with your husband. These types of touch are emotional and physical and are an important tie that keeps you and your partner bonded.

I'm not saying you have to look like a perfectly fit 20 year old for the rest of your life just so your husband's eye doesn't wander. That's ridiculous and unattainable, not to mention unnecessary. But, does that mean that you should just get comfortable and "let yourself go" because you're married and you know that your husband will still love you with a little extra weight or if you wear sweatpants every day? NO! Do I think Craig would still love me if I gained 50 pounds and wore sweatpants every day? Yes. Do I think he would be as attracted to me? No.

After having Fern, I gained quite a bit of weight and went through a phase where I sort of gave up a bit. I never did my hair or makeup, I NEVER worked out or ate healthy, and I shlubbed around our house wearing sloppiness all the time. Basically I stopped trying for a bit. You know what? My husband still loved me and he still wanted to hold my hand and take me out on dates. But, you know what else? Ever since I started heading back to the gym and getting healthy again and since I've started wearing makeup regularly and doing my hair (or at least brushing it), Craig and I have been like twitterpated teenagers. We are both nicer and more considerate of one another in general and there is way more sex happening. The reason: I feel prettier and more comfortable and confident in my skin and that is sexy to my husband. Do I look like the 20 year old version of myself? Nope, but I don't need to. According to my husband, it's the effort that is sexy to men.

We have some rules that help us maintain a bit of mystery in our relationship, because trust me...after being together for 11 years and having my husband see me push a baby out of my lady bits...there isn't a ton of mystery left, but nonetheless...We have a no burping or farting rule. Some people think we're crazy, but it works for us. Obviously, sometimes, it just happens, but we at least try to be classy about it when we can. Also, we also close the door when we're using the bathroom because, let's be real, there's nothing sexy about that. Having a little bit of mystery in a relationship keeps things fresh. It doesn't have to be anything major, but a little bit of intrigue goes a long way.

If you're finding yourself attracted to someone you know or you notice you're going out of your way to spend more time talking with a particular person, let your spouse know. Affairs are bred in secrecy, in fact, that's one of the most appealing things about affairs - the fact that they are forbidden...illicit. You can stop unwanted feelings dead in their tracks by bringing them into the light. You may think that this will be hurtful to your husband, but I guarantee you, most men would prefer this to the possible alternative of their wife having an affair. Have a discussion about this idea with your spouse - if you discuss it ahead of time, it will be less awkward in the event that you ever have to bring something up.

Having clear boundaries is a crucial part of affair proofing your marriage. For us, our boundaries couldn't be more clear: we don't spend time alone with anyone of the opposite sex. Maybe some people could be OK with having friends of the opposite sex or going out to coffee with a guy friend, but for us, we've made a very clear rule about it. We have mutual couple friends and it's not like we never talk to anyone of the opposite sex or anything (we're not Puritans!), but in general I don't have any close guy friends and Craig doesn't have any close girl friends. This is a way we keep ourselves from any temptations that could potentially arise. Even if it's unlikely, I doubt anyone who's had an affair ever expected it to happen to them. Personally, I'd rather be cautious.

It's so easy to stop talking to each other. Life gets busy and sometimes there are days that go by when you don't have a real conversation, but let it be the exception and not the rule. Always take the time to talk and share and reconnect with one another. Never stop communicating.

Many couples whose marriages end in affairs got to that place because they slowly drifted apart. They stopped doing things together and slowly over time, the lives that had once been so entwined, became totally separate. Avoid falling into this trap by sharing in each other's lives. Take the time to be a part of the things that your spouse enjoys and find things that you can both enjoy doing together. The purpose of marriage is to have a partner to do life with, so make sure you're taking time to actually do life together.

Take the time to check in on your marriage regularly. Sit down with your spouse and have a heart-to-heart about how your marriage is going and about areas where you feel like you are being successful as well as the areas where you are feeling dissatisfied or that could use a tune-up. Marriage isn't perfect and it never will be. It's just a journey that a husband and wife enter into together and there will be lots of bumps and wrong turns and turnarounds along the way, but if you face it together you can have a truly great marriage.

Hope you don't mind, but I wanted to share a little photo dump from my weekend away at the Radio Disney Music Awards in L.A...

Early morning pick-up to head to the airport. Funny to see a car service in our woodsy neighborhood.

Airport coffee (I walked clear to the opposite end of the airport to avoid Starbucks - #portlanderproblems)

Got a blow out with my friend Lauren and then we all got ready in Casey's room. It was kind of like getting ready for a high school formal, which I obviously loved. I was so excited about the dress I rented from Rent the Runway (more details here)!

My dress - a fun, little, gold Nanette Lepore number.

Details >>> All of my jewelry was from the talented Marisa of Seaworthy here in Portland, my shoes were Dolce Vita, and my clutch was from Seaecho.

We hung out in the Minnie Lounge before the show where there was lots of fun Minnie swag. Fern would've loved it. She's totally obsessed with all things "Minnie" ever since our Disneyland trip!

Then we did some group shots of all the Minnie Messengers: Lauren, myself, Ana, Casey, and Mindy

It was fun, but SO screamy. It didn't even cross my mind to bring ear plugs, but I totally should've. There were screaming tweens the entire time. Oh man.

Oh...and also, the Biebs and Taylor Swift were no shows. Cest la vie. Still had fun with these ladies though!

Afterward we all went to dinner and then came back and hung out at our swanky hotel for a bit.

It was fun having time all to myself, but I definitely missed my little family. They had a pretty good time without me though - some quality daddy daughter bonding for sure.

This weekend I will basically be living out the dream of preteen girls everywhere...

I have been invited to attend the Radio Disney Music Awards!

Remember when Fern and I went to Disneyland last month? Well, I can finally share what it was for! I've been invited to be a part of a fun new campaign for Disney called Minnie Messengers (you can see a post explaining more about it here), hence all the fun trips and Disney experiences...But back to my point...Radio Disney Music Awards...

I'm pretty excited about it for multiple reasons:

1. I'll hopefully be wearing this little gold number (with some serious spanx action I'm guessing...we'll see when it arrives...) which is super exciting since I'm a sucker for shiny things, but having an excuse to wear fancy, shiny things as a work-from-home mama (and one living in Portland no less) is a rarity. (*Side note, I promise this dress is longer than it looks on the model - I swear I will not be showing off my business in a moment a'la Britney.)

2. I'll get to see this lovely lady. She lives in NYC. I live in Portland. So. Far. Away. Getting an excuse to see her AND dress up fancy together? I'm in! And yes, Lauren Jimeson....I did in fact just post a giant photo of you on my blog :). (I also get to see this lady, and this lady and this lady too!)

3. J. Beibs is going to be at said awards show...supposedly. I actually only know this because my pre-teen cousins (avid fans of the Disney channel) informed me of the hearsay. So obviously I'll make sure to ask him about that kinda douchey Anne Frank comment for you all...you know once we've reached BFF status of course.

I am seriously feeling so blessed by all of the amazing opportunities I've been given through blogging lately...I kind of have the best job ever. Thank you to all of you who still hang around and take the time to read the things that I write. Without you I wouldn't be able to have this wonderful job where I get to work from home and hang out with Fern all the time, so THANK YOU! I am beyond grateful for each and every one of you lovely ladies who stops by here (and Disney and Babble) to share in my life.

My favorite thing about today was...

Spending time outside with Fern. It was a beautiful day and we spent it playing at the park with friends and dining alfresco in our backyard. And yes...that it our backyard. It's pretty fantastic. I also love that Fern and Marley both happened to look at the camera at the same time - it's the little things.

101 ways to not wear yoga pants: sweatshirt chic.

Some of you may (or may not have) noticed that I don't really do outfit posts anymore...at least not for myself.

The reason for that? Despite the fact that I am a stylist who tells other people what to wear, being a mom changes you and your personal style. No matter how much you don't think that it's going to, it just does.

I know that right now a few super chic mamas may be coming to mind (see exhibits: A, B, and C) and I would have to agree with you - they all look fabulous and totally still on-trend. But, I bet if you asked even these super stylish mamas if they had experienced some type of shift in their personal style (at least temporarily) after having their children, they would probably admit that they had.

For me, my style shift came as a result of my post-baby body and the logistics of motherhood. Nursing nixed quite of a few of my outfit options and dresses weren't really that practical for getting up and down off the floor all day. A fluctuating size and less than toned bod relegated me to mostly loose, drapey tops. And heels? Yeah right. Have you ever seen all the crap that moms have to carry? Cute heels are not worth dropping a baby over...just sayin'.

But, does this mean that motherhood has rendered me style-less? NO! You don't have to be perfectly perched on the precipice of all the latest and greatest fashion trends to still look pulled together. Don't just give up on life and live in your yoga pants...please, for the sake of all that is holy! You can find a balance between comfort and style!

I feel like I've found it over time and I decided I would start sharing my style posts with you again...not because I'm the most fashionably dressed mama on the internets...but because, I am a real mama with a real budget and real body issues who many of you can probably relate to.

I want to keep you from falling into the trap of yoga pants...thus the title of these posts was born: 101 Ways To NOT Wear Yoga Pants. This edition is: sweatshirt chic...

A simple sweatshirt and jeans is wardrobe staple, for many mamas, but instead of your baggy college hoodie and ill-fitting jeans, find some with a good fit. My jeans are from the Junior's section at Macy's and I love them. They're the Levi's Curve ID and the only pair of jeans I really wear anymore - they're perfect. The sweatshirt is a comfy crewneck I picked up at Target. Get yourself a crewneck sweatshirt stat. They're surprisingly versatile.

Now you could just leave it at that, but accessorizing is the easiest way to elevate a simple outfit without a lot of fuss. I added...

An old leopard print scarf to make my messy top knot look a little more chic...

And this cheap-o necklace from F21 that was a whopping $6.80. Remember...

My friend Selena of Le Petit Rêve has started up a pretty fantastic series that I wanted to share with you guys today.

It's called Real Mama Life inspired by this post Shauna Niequist wrote over at Relevant Magazine semi-recently. Shauna talks about how we should all stop Instagramming our perfect lives and share the real moments instead. Stop feeling like you have to stage everything to be just so and go ahead and snap that photo with the pile of laundry in the background or your crazy morning hair anyway, because that's real life and it's beautiful. This is what Selena is hoping to encourage with her new series (read more about it here) and I'm all about it.

I like pretty pictures and staging as much as the next person (uhhh...hello...I am a stylist after all...it's engrained in my nature), but that doesn't mean that everything always has to be perfect. I am totally guilty of staging photos with Fern in cute outfits on days when she's been in crusty leggings with a booger-face all day long. Or snapping shots of her in the one clean spot in our house, while piles of mess lurk just outside of the photo's frame. I think that's totally OK to do sometimes, but I also think that doing this all the time is going to result in us looking back at our lives one day through pictures and realizing that it all looks a little too perfect and not so much like how the story really happened. There is beauty in the reality of our stories and that is the story that I want to tell and remember. Sure I want to see some cute staged photos sprinkled in there too, but I want to try to share more real moments.

My Real Life Mama Monday moment that I wanted to share this week was this shot from dinner with friends this weekend:

My friend Becca snapped it and I love that it perfectly captured what most meals out with little ones are like. Everyone is wrangling and feeding kids while sneaking in fragmented bits of conversation and taking shifts to eat. There is usually whining at some point and there are definitely messes and dinners commence by 5:00 PM (old people style) and everyone breaks up to head home for bedtimes before 8:00 PM (the witching hour).

The thing I love most about this photo is that when I look at it, it really makes me feel like a parent. I remember going out to meals with Chris and Becca in the pre-kid days when they just had Bennett and Craig and I were childless and not understanding why they couldn't hang out longer or why they wouldn't want to go to certain restaurants or why they had to eat in shifts. I remember thinking that so many of the things that my friends with kids did were weird. But, now that I'm a parent, I can just laugh about it, because now I'm "that parent" and I do a ton of those things that I thought were weird. I guess it's kind of unavoidable and in an odd way I kind of love it. It makes me feel like I've matured and figured out some things about life and like I've really settled into my role as a mama...it kind of makes me proud in a strange way. Not sure if that makes sense at all.

But, there you have it. A little dose of reality for your week!

I've been blogging less here over the past couple of months and it's not because I don't like you guys.

It's because mama's been hustling over at Disney and Babble blogging my little heart out. I still love you guys a ton and am actually working on getting other bloggers to join me for a fun new series here that I think you're going to love. BUT...in the mean time, I'm busting out like 10 blog posts a week, plus videos. It can be kind of a lot.

It looks like I've got myself a little bookworm. My girl LOVES reading.

We've dedicated a bookshelf that is just her height in our living room to all of her books and all day long she brings us books to read. So, I thought I'd share some of the little things we're reading these days...

1. "Hug" by Jez Alborough

This book was our friend Alomae's favorite when she was younger and we received specific instructions that it must be read with all the appropriate voices. Well, apparently Fern loves the voices too and this story, while super simple, is very sweet and great for teaching toddler's about emotions.

2. "I Can Fly" by Ruth Krauss, illustrated by Mary Blair

This was the very first book I ever bought for Fern, before I even knew I was having a Fern. I just knew I was pregnant and this book was cute. I love the illustrations and basically want to hang them all up in Fern's room. She loves all the animals in this book. Girl loves her animals.

3. "Baby's House" by Gelolo Mchugh, illustrated by Mary Blair

Yet another Mary Blair illustrated masterpiece. I'm kind of obsessed with her illustrations and really want to get the entire treasury. This one is a little more practical for Fern right now though since it's squishy hard back and not of the more delicate paper paged persuasion.

2. "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" by Bill Martin Jr & Eric Carle

A classic children's book. Great for introducing your little one to colors and the rhymes are fun and catchy - if your child is anything like mine, they'll want to read it over and over and over again.

5. "Peter Rabbit Sleepy Time" by Beatrix Potter

Fern adores a good "lift-the-flap" book (or as my friend Danni likes to call them: "rip-the-flap" books) and this one is super adorable. On each page you'll find one of the classic Beatrix Potter character's (Timmy Willie the kitten is Fern's favorite) and your child can lift the flap to cover them up for bed time which is a favorite around here. And, for some reason, the placement of the flaps is such that they have yet to get ripped. Knock on wood.
