Dear Mom,

Well, it's Mother's Day 2013 and what special thing do you get to celebrate this year? The birth of your first great grandchild --that's what-- and born on your birthday to boot! What a wonderful birthday present that must have been. Your first grandchild--dearest granddaughter has a baby. It's blowin' my mind to be called 'Grammy' so I can't imagine what it must feel like to have 'Great' added to to it. Wow. GG.

I wanted to post this picture of us because it's one of my faves of all time. Both of us smilin' and my blond spiral curly locks in the typical rats nest it always IS. I hope Landon gets our dimples. Maybe he'll even inherit my curly hair. Maybe I shouldn't wish that on him.

I love this photo of your high school graduation picture. The hairdo is a bit suspect (what's hidin' under there?), but I just think you're beautiful. Beautiful.

I wanted to wish you a 'Happy Mother's Day' and let you know how much I appreciate and love you.

And, congratulations on becoming GG!

Make an Heirloom Corsage for Mom

Last Friday, this gurl was inspired to make a corsage from scraps of fabric, t-shirts and ribbon.

Dive into your fabric scrap pile and start cuttin' petals, leaves, and strips and assemble them to make flowers.

Here are a two of my tutorials for making fabric flowers:

Frayed Flower

T-shirt Wedding Bouquet

Tip: I always cut a circle of fabric and glue it to the back to hide the stitches and the back of the pin.

Before I glue it, I snip two small holes for the pinback to fit through.

Stitch the pin to the back of the corsage first, put the circle of fabric over to hide it and then glue down the fabric and close the pin.

The corsage is attached to the paper doily and packaged in it's own little box.

I purchased the balsa wood box at Michael's for a buck, then stained it with liquid shoe polish, sprayed it with clear paint and glued on a paper flower.

I think it's a great heirloom corsage for Mom to wear every year on Mother's Day and she can store it in its own special box!

This gurl's finished quite a few (6 to be exact) Alabama Chanin pieces and when I saw this beautiful corsage I immediately knew I was gonna make one. Maybe two. Maybe three.

Luckily, I have a stash of thrifted t-shirts in the perfect colors and can't wait to get started!

I might even go so far as to make myself the corset top too.

What a lovely gift for Mother's Day.

Oh, and here's a random pic of Grammy's little man.

Dearest Landon:

Grammy is so happy you've joined us!

Your mama did such a great job during labor. But, due to complications of the cord being wrapped around your neck a coupla times, Mr. Doctor decided to help you arrive via c-section. Grammy thinks that was a very good decision indeed.

You've got quite the set of lungs on you and you are, by far, one of the cutest little babies Grammy has ever seen, besides your mama and uncle of course.

And your appetite! Wowza! You had no problem figuring out how to eat. And EAT you do. You're going to be a very big boy. You've got the longest fingers I've ever seen on a baby and they make me chuckle.

A friend of mine said you look like Winston Churchill in this picture. I suppose you do because of the way your hat is slipped off to one side and your chubby cheeks. OH THOSE CHUBBY CHEEKS! Not to mention, that little button nose you inherited from your mama. Grammy kisses that button nose quite often.

And, there is nothin' better in my book than your soft skin and baby smell. God must do that on purpose. It's intoxicating.

Grammy is quite giddy you're finally here. I can certainly wait until you walk and talk. I'm gonna enjoy every little thing about you until then.

I'll love you forever.

I've read that you can make cakes in terra cotta pots as long as the pots are clean and not painted.

Haven't tried it though.

My grandson is due in just a few days, so my daughter came over to have me take some photos.

This gurl's been on a Wally World DIY binge.

Firstly, I found a watering can in the perfect shade of yellow. Not too bright-just right yellow.

I decided it needed a makeover, so out came the water slide floral decals!

Love, love love the shades of pink ranunculus.

I found a pair of $5 white kicks and thought I'd try the painting shoe thang.

I've never painted shoes before.

Does one really want to paint shoes?

Why yes--do try.

It was quite a delightful project.

They're fun and I'll enjoy wearin' 'em while I'm out gardenin'.

There's one other DIY project comin' up.

One of those 'aha' moment DIYs.

One that took me totally by surprise.

Those are the best kind.

Love the idea of making one with old scarves.

With warmer weather coming, this gurl wants to make a tent or a teepee--can't decide.

I wanna lay outside on big squishy pillows, read a book and sip sweet tea.

My favorite tent has to be the one above made with an old lace tablecloth and vintage sheets.

Too cute.

And of course, Violet needs a circus tent!

Especially, since she's Bubbles the Wonder Dog!

Cherry On Top Crocheted Brooch Pattern

Here's a fun weekend project for y'all.

Just sumthin' a bit different to wear and not made in the traditional color of a cherry.

It's so easy even a beginner can make one!

Ingredients:

Scraps of cotton yarn (fingering weight) or embroidery floss

2.0 mm hook

Pinback

Needle/thread

Scissors

Cherry (Make Two)

Make a magic ring. SC 6 in ring. Join. CH1.

R1: 2 SC in each ST around to end. Join to 1st SC. CH1. (12)

R2: Work in back loops only of each SC, SC in each ST to end. Join to 1st SC. CH1. (12)

R3: SC in each ST to end. Join to 1st SC. CH1 (12)

You will want to start stuffing the cherry at this point before the decrease. I use the same color yarn instead of polyfill so it won't show through. The beginning of the tail will be on the inside of the cherry so use that as stuffing also.

R4: Decrease row - SK1 ST, SC in next ST, *SK1 ST, SC in next ST* to end. (6) Join. Fasten off. Weave in ends to close leaving a tail to sew on the top of each stem.

Stems (Make Two-one will be shorter than the other) You can make the stems as long as you want simply by making a longer chain.

1st Stem: CH 10. In 2nd CH from hook, SL ST to end. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

2nd Stem: CH 7. In 2nd CH from hook, SL ST to end. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Leaves (Make Two)

CH 5. Leave about a 4 inch tail to weave down the middle of the leaf when you're done.

In 2nd CH from hook, 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 SC, SL ST in SC just made. Working on the other side of the ST you just slipped, 1 SC in the ST you just slipped, 1 DC in next ST, 1 HDC in next ST, 1 SC in next ST, SL ST in 1st SC to make point of the leaf. Weave the tail end of the yarn down the center of the backside of the leaf to end. Fasten off.

Construction:

Sew the leaves to the top of each stem. On one stem, weave in the ends of the leaf and cut. With the second stem, attach leaf and use tail to sew to the other leaf. In the center of both leaves, wrap the end of the yarn around the middle a couple of times. Knot and cut on the back side.

Attach the cherries to each stem. I weave the tail down the center of the cherry to the bottom and then cut the end of the yarn.

Sew the pinback to the back of the leaves.

Yer done!

Now, wear your Cherry on Top!

This gurl is seriously obsessed.

Ever since I saw Kiera Knightly covered in a similar one in the movie Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, I've been thinking about nothing else but this shawl/blanket.

It's a different color, but obviously from the same maker.

Sticker shock. $198!!!

There's really no way to take the time to figure out a pattern, and no one has yet--believe me--I've searched!

So, what did I do?

I pulled out all of my scrap cotton yarn, thrifted crocheted doilies and potholders.

Hook in hand, I started my first free form crochet throw.

I'm determined to make one as nothing has had me so excited to crochet lately.

I'll let ya know how it goes.
