Ancestral trip, Genealogical tour, Family outing...

Call it what you want but planning a trip to visit the home of your ancestors, walk in their footsteps, visit now living relatives or a grave. A historically important visit for you, important because it is your history, this is something that makes my heart beat faster.

As I look out the window at the rain, wind and thoroughly unpleasant weather I don't really feel like going anywhere right now. But even if we can't travel anywhere right now how about planning for a trip to come?

An Ancestral trip should be carefully planned so as that you don't miss out on anything. You may want to do the research yourself and that is good because then you have the full picture of what your family history looks like. Make sure you have done it correctly.

When it comes to planning your trip I suggest hiring a Swede (if you are coming to Sweden of course), someone who really know the region, its history and the details. To get the most out of your trip and to get to experience I think you deserve take time to think through what you want to take home and look back on.

You need to consider the following:

Do you wan to travel on your own or with a guide,
How many will be travelling with you, any children,
How many days do you want to spend on this trip,
Do you want to combine this trip with days spent vacationing in Sweden,
Do you want to visit one particular place, home, church or several places,
Do you want to visit a museum or point of interest that can help you see your families situation as part of Swedish society,
Do you want to meet living relatives.

To make this the ancestral trip of your dreams, then you need to take into consideration that the researcher planning your trip will need time to go through your research, or if you want the research done for you prior to the trip, he or she will need to go through the details from the research and put it together as a planned tour for you.

My experience says that I need to go through the research done as most of the time I can find something the customer may have overlooked. I know the area and know what can be considered or what will be a boring or not so interesting site to visit. Maybe the croft is no longer there but we can visit another site that will give the customer a feeling for what life was like back then.

In addition to that, if you want to meed long lost relatives, we need to contact them and they need time to plan for your visit. Some jump to the occasion and others need time to consider it as not everybody is comfortable speaking english. I have met both of these extremes. Remember you have been thinking about this for a while. Let them think about it as well.

I have had several very happy clients. Each ancestral trip has been a new experience, equally thrilling and pleasant to take part of, but equally different from the next. But no matter what, you will be making the same exhilarating trip that your ancestors did.
