As a smartwatch, the Gear fit focuses on calls and notifications which includes third-party applications. When a notification/call comes in, the unit quietly vibrates. From here you either delete, reject, or scroll through and respond with pre-programmed computer speak like “I’ll call you right back” or “I’m in a meeting talk later”. At first it wasn't all sunshine, the default horizontal mode made reading messages an arm twister, but Samsung quickly got the message and updated the Fit with a vertical rotation option. Once I got the hang of it, I was answering messages, emails, and monitoring my workout with a few swipes. It’s a discreet way of checking your messages, but the Gear Fit would benefit from a built-in microphone. Imagine having voice recognition to dictate a quick response or just answer a call, but I guess that’s what Samsung calls the Galaxy Gear 2.

The Gear Fit comes packed with typical fitness-tracking functions, such as a pedometer, running, walking, cycling and hiking, and with one tap, an integrated heart monitor shows your beats per minute. The latest update gives you a basic sleep tracker—timing how long you sleep and how long your body isn't moving. If you’re wearing it to bed though, swipe to the right inside the sleep tracker and turn on blocking mode to silence notifications.

During my time with the device, the Fit worked perfectly fine. When I decided to put my feet to pavement I decided set the Fit to run mode and to also track my heart rate. I also had my Fitbit Force on my other arm for a comparison. The Gear Fit and the Fitbit were nearly identical with the Gear giving a slightly higher reading.

The design of Snapchat can be termed as silly at is best. The app’s logo is that of a ghost also called as "Ghostface Chillah" on yellow colored background. After logging into it by creating an account, the user is taken to a screen which lets the user click photos and shoot videos. Photos can be taken easily by just clicking on a large circular button on the bottom middle of the screen and videos can be shot by holding that button for long, as long as you hold that button the movie keeps on shooting. The square button on the left hand side of the circular button directs the user to the update. The other button on the right of the circular button takes you to your ‘My Friends’ screen.

Snapchat has introduced various new additional features like replay, visual filters, Snapchat Stories, , smart filters, special text etc. after the initial launch. By adding a snap to a users story, the snap can then be viewed any number of times over 24 hours. You can even choose who gets to see your stories by changing the settings.

Ever dreamt of a computer, laptop, notebook or mobile phone without a keyboard? Probably yes, but now researchers have made this dream come reality. You’d be probably wondering then how we going to type in data into our handheld device or our computers. Keyboard is an inseparable part of any computing device to provide with necessary input. But now with dedicated work of researchers, they’ve managed to come up with a virtual keyboard. Yes a virtual keyboard. So how would that be? Well simple the device will emit a laser beam which will form a keyboard on any flat area, and not just a small keyboard like that of a mobile phone, it’ll be a full-fledged keyboard with all the possible controls. A laser emitter forms the imagery part and a sensor above it will sense our hand movement and detect what we wish to type and passing those commands to the computing device it is connected with.

They’re going way beyond this, not only keyboard but they’ve included the features of laser mouse, that means that we’ll be having not only keyboard but a multi touch keyboard as well. Yet the researchers are working on miniaturizing this technology to fit it into small handheld devices. Google, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and HTC are among other large phone makers who have agreed to introduce a built-in anti-theft feature in their phones that will allow users to remotely wipe out all data and lock down the stolen device. This feature is expected to be introduced in all smartphones after July 2015 thanks to increasing pressure from American politicians. Also if the users do manage to reclaim their lost devices then the feature will allow them to restore data that has been wiped out.

However, as per the discussions between the companies, the proposed feature will be ‘opt-in’ which means that users will have to actively go into their phone settings and turn it on. This could mean that users who unfortunately don’t have the knowledge about this feature will still not turn it on or may choose not to if the feature is hidden behind scores of menus and sub-menus.
Android users can currently already remotely lock and wipe data from a stolen device by turning on Android Device Manager in their phone settings. Even Apple introduced new feature “the Activation Lock” in iOS 7 that offers similar abilities. We aren’t sure how this proposed feature will differ from the existing options but if it means that the security options take center-stage due to the proposal, then we’re definitely in for it.

Windows today unveiled that it’ll provide smartphones and tabs whose screen size is less than 9 inch with free windows 8 and windows phone 8. This step has been targeted to increase its sales revenue but also to stand as a strong competitor for android range of smartphones and tabs. The software giant announced this at the annual build conference. It won’t be free personally, but any OEM licensing fees won’t be taken.

This may lead to shift of users from predominant android to windows domain, changing the whole scenario of android phone users (for the worst) and for windows phone and tablet users (for good). Windows have always been successful in most of the domains they’ve ventured in, so the hopes and the stakes are too high on this deal.

Even though, this step taken by Microsoft can lower its return on investment, but if taken in consideration the long term impact, harvested reap could be of very high value.

facebook has updated its Messenger app for iOS and Android with a free voice calling feature for India. Users can now make voice calls using WiFi or mobile data network. While the calls are free, data charges apply. The feature is powered by the Voice Over Internet Protocol technology and was launched in USA last year.

To make a free call, open a message thread, tap on the menu button and choose the Free Call option. You can make calls to those contacts who have installed this version of the app. Read out more..
