The Reward is Lotsa Cash…

One of the least favourite tasks of a freelancer is pricing themselves and their services. There is always the fear of pricing yourself out of the market or undervaluing yourself, time and service. Knowing what, how and when to charge what, is still an uphill task for me. Quite frankly, I have charged for services that left me feeling like a complete idiot wishing I would rewind the hands of time to make things right.

Same Cast, Different Scenes

The first step to finding the right price for your service(s) is to understand what other professionals similar to yours charge for the same services. If you are a graphic designer, find the going rate for the same services. This can be challenge as majority of freelancers would be hesitant to give you an exact figure. The key here is to get a rough estimate from a handful of your colleagues. Do not forget factor in market forces, experience/skill level and in some instances, education level.

Birds of a feather…

The second step is to understand your target market and segment pricing accordingly. My services are suitable to everyone who needs their words put into writing. However, I have specialised in business writing. And further to that I have segmented all my target market with their own pricing. Having a segmented format will ensure I do not lock out clients who may need my services but cannot afford the suggested price. This has greatly helped in offering my services effectively.

Riding the Bus

The last step would be to fully understand the project at hand before putting a figure forward. Those who bid for projects on bidding sites, are familiar with the per hour format. Here in Kenya, the concept is relatively new. On the per hour basis, one needs to factor in the time needed to fully complete the project. For example, if you are offering writing services indicators to factor in could be research time, drafting, writing, editing and proofreading before presenting the final copy. These should include billable hours.

On the other hand, there are projects whose pricing cannot be calculated on a per hour basis which means calculating the project on a wholesome basis (like I do). For short-term projects or gigs such as writing a brochure, business profile, article e.t.c. the final price will include time (urgent, immediate or can wait), resources and work done.

For the long-term projects (those that take months), I have found the safest route to go is on a retainer basis. This in a sense is much cheaper for the client in the long run than if I was to charge per project basis.

Having a firm understanding on how to price yourself as a freelancer will go a way in establishing the foundations of success and financial freedom.

These are words that are said to graduands every year from our universities. Well, my power to do all that appertains to what I studied is not closely or remotely related to working with words for a living. With a recent post comparing talent against skill in freelancing, the common denominator I have found in these two is education or improving oneself and/or skills through continuous learning. Learning in the new world order has greatly changed how we acquire knowledge and/or dispense it.

Yes, these have become a source for those who want to learn. Ebooks in every conceivable topic have been written by amateurs and industry experts. There are thousands upon thousands of ebooks offered either for free or at a fee. Whether a free ebook or premium one, one written by well-known experts can add knowledge, skills and insight into your already pool of knowledge.

Online Tutorials

Unlike a traditional classroom, online courses offer one the flexibility of acquiring the much needed skills at their own paced time. One can acquire a degree, diploma or certificate without setting their foot in a classroom. Apart from cutting cost of acquiring the much needed knowledge, one gains skills from the available vast online resource. Just like the ebooks, online courses are either free or come at a fee However, before joining an online course, there are certain steps needed;

What Have Learned About Blogging-Part 2

About six months ago, I wrote a post that attempted to compare blogging to running a business and freelancing. When writing the first post, I was a newbie blogger with a puffed up chest, an ego and confidence on steroids about blogging. This actual post was delayed deliberately to help me learn more about blogging. And now six months down the line, I have more insights into my comparisons.

Before I begin my comparison, I would like to say blogging has been a way for me to write in a non-formal style and tone that am not used to in my ‘other life’. As you all know am a writer who also dabbles in editing and proofreading. In my ‘other life’ I tend to find an irresistible attraction to business writing in whatever form it presents itself. But, this right here, gives me a chance to-well-write how I feel like-easy, conversational and relaxed tone while passing on a message.

Patience

Just like in business/freelancing, it requires an enormous amount of patience, diligence and a ‘never die’ attitude to sustain a blog. Granted, there are days, weeks or months when no posts are published due to work pressures, negligence or even lack of blog ideas, the passion to keep going is what sets you apart from others.

From finding a steady flow of clients, work/projects, payments on time to seeing your marketing efforts converted to real money, you will need to work harder than ever to make your freelancing work, fruitful and rewarding.

Communication

Imagine you walk into a store where the attendants see you but proceed to ignore you as though you are not there. This is the same in blogging. I have learned that in this forum, you have to keep track of your commenters, fans, followers and other metrics that reveal everything about your blog. You have to be out there, for people to ‘see’ you, feel you, learn from you and eventually agree to be your ‘friend’, fan or follower.

In business, your marketing efforts and advertising will yield the same. Knowing who, what, when, how and even why people buy or pick a competitors’ product or service boils down to having excellent communication channels.

The Village

It takes a village to raise a child, so goes the African saying. This blog is like my baby. The villagers are the readers, commenters, other bloggers and advertisers (if you are a problogger). To make this baby grow, one needs to interact, accept criticism, critique, praises or love for how a baby is growing or why the child is becoming malnourished.

In business, one needs to form alliances, friendships and networks with other people in business. From people within your industry to people in an unrelated field, these can offer valuable insights into a growing and/or a successful business.

Recap

In my first post, I talked about blog marketing and techy stuff. As far as blog marketing goes, am getting there. This is partly to understanding why I write this blog. Reasons range from inform, stretch my creativity to presenting the blog as my canvas of my work to potential clients. As for the techie stuff, I had to learn a bit (though ‘twas mind boggling). See all the widgets/plug-ins, hacks and modification on this blog, I did them all without any techie hand :).

Every start up desires more clients/customers crowding their every working moment with orders, calls and emails about this or that. Despite what your collage professor, high school business teacher or self-appointed business consultants told you, MARKETING is very integral to the survival and growth of every business. How does this tie to your freelancing endeavours? Well, for one you do not have a steady income like your 9-5 friends; and secondly, the weight of your freelancing business rests squarely on your shoulders.

I launched my freelancing business last year, and I tried every marketing tactics, tricks and practices. Did I like all of them? Yes and no. Yes, because I was able to understand what my target market requires and demands in order to get a satisfactorily work. No, some of those tactics scared the living daylights out of me!

Jay Conrad introduced a concept that is widely used in marketing circles famously referred to as guerrilla marketing. It basically means using the most minimum of resources to get the maximum results. And no, you don’t have to break the bank to fund your marketing efforts. Here are my three tried and tested guerrilla marketing tactics that have used or continue using for my marketing efforts

Collaborations

As a writer/editor, some of the businesses people have collaborated with bringing in returns in terms of clients include;

Web and graphic designer. They are in need of good copy when designing even the simplest of design. Unless it’s a medium that does not need words, good copy is a necessity.
Brand agencies. I have dealt with small agencies with one copywriter and these agencies have a need of an editor/proofreader to ensure that the copy written is in top notch shape.
Marketing/PR professionals. With all the writing they do, someone has to check their work for grammar and all those annoying errors that can cause embarrassments.
Business consultants to SMEs. The reason why I target such professionals is their closeness to my target market-SMEs

The trick with collaborations is to prove your relevance through your work.

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube etc. are the greatest innovations since the launch of internet 20years. If you don’t have a presence in these platforms, you are missing out on a relatively free forum to advertise yourself. As you embark on a journey to becoming an online citizen, bring your manners along, if you want to survive and be relevant to everyone.

Sleeping With The Enemy

How about approaching people you’d otherwise consider ‘rivals’ in business. This means fellow comrades, freelancers, professionals and other people in your field. Why is this? It is not a miracle that the ‘rival’ may experience work overload with a looming deadline meaning they may need to bring in a trusted hand to help them out; that person maybe you. However, please cultivate a culture of reciprocity, excellent people skills and trustworthiness, diligence and honesty for people to reach out to you.

The Resolution

When I started this blog, I was fascinated with the idea of speaking my thoughts, experiences, lessons and tribulations in the best way I know how-writing. But, the journey has not been without its ups and down. If you look closely, you will notice that the last post appeared sometime in November. Am I proud of it-well, no; it bugs me to the deepest core of my writer being. I know this is the time resolutions are made, with people swearing to themselves to make their resolutions work. As for me, I choose to look at what I will not change this year.

1. I choose to continue writing every day. My journals, notebooks and every scrap of paper on my desk is filled with doodles, thoughts and write-ups for clients and myself. This helps to keep the writing fire burning that sustains this passion that I have.

2. I choose to read, read and read till my eyes fall off their sockets. Reading has not only expanded my mind to new genres of writing, but has shown me that I am far from being the kind of writer i envision myself to be.

3. I choose to be honest, trustworthy, dedicated and diligent in my work. I believe these are the pillars that entrust and endear you to clients.

4. I choose to make connections with writers from every walk of life and genres. By associating oneself with their ilk, one is able to see their craft, passion and livelihood through the eyes of others.

As we start the year, choose to continue doing something that adds to your knowledge, skills, network, conversations and most importantly, your being. Let us know what you choose to uphold this year.

Letting Go Of Productivity Killers

With no one looking over your shoulders, one can easily slip down the valley of non-productivity. This is one of those pitfalls that are usually hushed in the freelance corridors. I tend to be hyperactive and the slightest distraction can throw me off tangent for a very, very long time. Consequently, this means I have to go into overdrive to make up for the misused seconds, minutes and hours.

However, in this post we look at the major culprits that eat into a freelancer’s man hours; and how to overcome them.

Internet (social networks)

Internet is the necessary evil that we cannot live without. The internet has become the watering hole for web/virtual workers through interactions on social networks and other forums. Think of it as the point where web workers meet during breaks to have their coffee and engage in chit chats.

However, if go unchecked one can spend a whole day on social networks chatting, facebooking, twitting and emailing back and forth. The upside is that one can banish this nasty habit easily and quickly by channeling the spent hours back to work. Just unplug from the web 2.0 and work offline.

Home Office

Unless you have rented space in the CBD, you’ll probably be working out of your home office (it could on your kitchen top or even in the verandah). Yes, I know the advantage of such arrangement-endless traffic jams along Uhuru Highway, hiked fees by unscrupulous matatu crew or an angry boss coz you late again-all become like a distant memory.

But, if unchecked, the home office can be your downfall. The trip to the fridge is a couple of steps away; you can do your laundry any day anytime or even sleep till noon. Remedy: get a schedule with structured working hours.

Work Load

Being a solopreneur essentially means you get to handle all the projects alone. On the one hand having a plate full of project is desirable but it can be real productivity killer on the other. It is important as a freelancer to take on projects that will give you space and time to breathe (we don’t want you suffocating under that pile of projects)

To manage and succeed in freelancing, having a keen eye on your productivity level can go a long way.

Do You Have A Freelance Agreement?

Agreements and contracts are often found in the legal corridors and hallways of big companies and multinationals. My stint in the bank made me realize the importance of such agreements. Any form of relationship that was entered between the bank and a member of the public was almost always followed with one appending their signature on a legal form. Many signed off on these forms without actually reading the fine print (read terms and conditions) of the said agreement. My perusal of the terms and conditions revealed a skewed tilt that tended to favour the bank.

The use of agreements cannot be underscored in a contractual situation. Since the relationship is often short-lived, spelling the terms, conditions and reference of the relationship is very important. In my short journey as a freelancer, I did not see the need of drawing such agreements until recently.

Drawing up an agreement protects both parties and ensures a smooth working relationship. In my agreement, I have included the following clauses that are very specific and are clearly spelt out to avert any misunderstanding.

1. Services Needed

Since I offer a wide range of service, I clearly spell out, in details, what service(s) am contracted to offer. This avoids a situation where I go beyond my role. This also prevents the client from adding in other tasks in the middle of the project.

2. Duration

After consultative meetings, review of the project at hand, complexity and price, am able to come up with a time frame for the completion of the project. I usually give or take a few days-emergencies and other unforeseen delays. This assures the client that their project will be completed within a specified period.

3. Copyright

The creative industry is riddled with copyright issue. This blog post is copyrighted, the template on which it runs on is copyrighted and the pictures I’ve used are also copyrighted. What does this mean? When dealing with paying clients one cannot claim copyright on work outsourced to them. Even your best, most brilliant work wholly belongs to the client.

4. Communication

When dealing with a single individual one knows who to contact. However, it’s a different case when dealing with a whole company or department. To avoid the headache of miscommunication, clearly have it in writing who you report to, who to contact, who oversees the project, who signs off e.t.c.

5. Payment

Every work carried out has a monetary value attached to it. Always ensure you have clearly written what is owed to you, when payment is due, mode of payment and what happens when a clients fails or delays to pay your dues.

Disclaimer: At the risk of sounding like a learned friend, please ensure a lawyer goes over your agreement to ensure that your agreement does not present loopholes that the other party can use against you, in case things go sour.

Dealing With Non-Core Activities of Freelancing

One of my biggest freelancing flaw is avoiding ‘business’ tasks that are crucial to the growth of any business. What am I on about? Marketing, book-keeping, administrative tasks and chasing clients for your payment puts a damper on my otherwise high spirit that I get from writing. In a previous post, I talked about using SWOT to weigh one’s strengths and weaknesses and gauging them against the future prospects of your freelancing endeavors. This analysis is important in identifying the weak spots in your personality that can be detrimental to your success.

In my ‘marketing’ campaign to clients, I always stress the importance of handling tasks that are core to their businesses as they let me (freelancers) handle the non-core activities. However, I must confess have not followed my own advice. But, how can a freelancer ensure they handle their task without letting their businesses suffer due to negligence, ignorance, dislike or busyness?

Outsource

Simple tasks like accounting (book-keeping), payment of bills (personal and business), marketing and administrative tasks can all be outsourced-to fellow freelancers. However, one should be in the know of what is going on in their business to avoid jaws dropping months later.

Hi-Tech

The beauty of technology is that tedious manual task can be automated easily, efficiently and professionally leaving you with enough time on your hands. If you are a penny pincher, one can opt for free or open-source softwares. However, if you prefer customized templates and documents, you can opt for paid softwares.

Thyself

This is especially important to rookie freelancers who may not have much work at hand and/or the finances to implement the above. This will ensure the rookie freelancer puts in place systems and processes that are crucial for the success of the business.

Choosing a method that works well for you and easily integrates into your already working system is crucial. How do you handle you non-core activities?

A Precarious Balancing Act

For the past month or so, I have been buried neck deep by a client’s project (not that am complaining :) and this has made me realise the essence and importance of having your time off from work as a freelancer. Granted, you could be pressed by a deadline and maybe you are handling a large project alone but how does one ensure they do not run amok with work?

Monday is the New Saturday

If you find you have worked through the weekend, please let your mind and body have a ‘weekend’. Due to project pressures, at times I would work through the weekend, missing out on the fun out there. However, I always ensured that I compensated myself with a day off to do nothing but relax and rejuvenate-usually Mondays (besides I hate Mondays). Find your own formula for rewarding with a day or two and relax.

Small Portions, Please!

If you are handling a large project/gig it can be overwhelming to see the start or end of it. To ensure you do not burn-out even before the project has began; it would be wise to break the project into small manageable portions that will ensure smooth sailing of the project/gig. Clients are more receptive to a systematic and organised plan of doing a project, and will most likely accept your proposal if they see the end sooner. With this paced approach, one is left with time and space to think, breath and just R-E-L-A-X.

Finding balance in one’s life as a freelancer is not only essential but vital for productivity and the freelancer’s general well-being. Next time you are tempted to work seven days a week non-stop; do take the time to smell the roses ensuring you do not get a bee-sting on your nose!

When it comes to branding, most freelancers are torn between business or personal branding. I have a registered business that I operate my writing business under but my name is the most known brand tool I possess.

Unless you want a legion of minions working under you, then business branding would be ideal for you. Today we are going to tackle personal branding.

Personal brands are things, character or personality traits, behavioral or even features that makes one different from everyone else. Was the late MJ a formidable brand? Well, he was the only one who looked smashing hot in his three-quarter trousers with peeping white socks and a gloved hand. Many have tried to pull that look but have failed miserably. But how, does it apply to the entrepreneur/freelancer?

One does not have to break the bank vault to build and create a strong personal brand. While reading Daniels Ngari's Personal Branding Salad Bar I was left with my mouth watering for more and an enlightened mind. His platter was laid so well that one cannot fail to stuff themselves silly with the easy to follow steps to effective personal branding. With Peter Montoya's personal branding laws however, I tend to believe he had the freelance professional on his mind.

Eight Laws of Personal Branding:

1. Law of Specialization.

How well do you excel at your chosen career? Does it bring out your strengths and talent? Freelancers are a talented and creative lot, tap into it.

2. Law of Leadership

When a client seeks your services and picks you among a multitude of sameness, they believe you are a leader in your chosen field. Are you?

3. Law of Personality

How well does your personality blend in with your freelancing career? Is it a barrier or a stimulant? E.g. you can’t be writer if you hate reading and researching.

4. Law of Distinctiveness

There are thousands upon thousands of freelancers in your specialty or field, but what makes you so distinct that your name is the final word in conversations?

5. Law of Visibility

How accessible are you to your clients? Is your name written in bright neon lights? Do you command a giant share in your field?

6. Law of Unity

People want to interact with a human being that shows emotions, empathy and ethics. Are you

known as the sleazy freelancer without your knowledge? Are you used as an example of what one

should not be or the one that clients dread contacting?

7. Law of Persistence

In any business venture, persistence is called for. How well do you handle disappointments? Do you

To Spec Or Not To Spec

Spec in freelance lingo generally means to work for free with no monetary gain. Most freelancers need a portfolio to showcase their work and this can only be achieved if one has a long list of satisfied clients. But, what happens when one does not have even a single client in his stable?

My forte is writing but only took up editing roles recently. To find my first client in editing, I opted to do some pro bono (spec) work. When I mentioned this to a couple of my friends I was flooded with requests from all and sundry to edit their work, for free. However, when it comes to spec, one needs to be careful whom to work with and for.

Freelancers’ Social Responsibility

For my editing portfolio, I chose to work with a client in the NGO sector. After my interaction with the organisation’s founder, I found his cause to be noble and could benefit from my editing services. My decision to work for this client was largely based on my belief in giving back. And since then the response has been tremendous with more clients knocking (or is it banging?) on my door, through his glowing recommendation.

Different Boat

There are times when one may feel like sailing in a different direction. This is especially so for writers. I recently took up a writing gig that is different from what am used to; non-fiction writing with special emphasis in business communication. Since I didn’t have experience in that genre (Anecdote fiction) I opted to do spec in order to get a feel, rhythm and voice for that kind of writing. Is my decision to spec worth it? Only time will tell.

I am very weary when a client asks me to send a never-published sample of my work. I often wonder if my published work(s) cannot stand as my reference, then maybe am not the right person to handle the client’s work. Yes, I have been a victim of this which technically means I did work on spec (without my 'approval') and can be quite disheartening especially if you have ’slaved’ to come up with a quality piece of work.

The decision to spec largely depends on the freelancer, their goal and reason. Be smart and cautious when looking for clients to fill up your portfolio. Who knows maybe, just maybe, your choice of spec work or client may lead to well paying gigs later.

Who is The Boss?

The path to freelancing is often clouded with delusions of a boss-free career. And, it is this mind set that most people take their first steps with. The realisation that as a freelancer one is not his/her own boss dawned on me recently. Yes, you may show up at your workplace in pyjamas, bunny slippers and a face full of cream, but unknowingly you are answerable to someone other than yourself.

With the ability to take on projects that one feels comfortable doing and decline those that do not resonate with their freelancing motto, one unknowingly takes on several bosses who have their own demands, conditions and deadlines that one needs/strives to meet. This can be a harsh reality especially for the newbie freelancer who is often ecstatic, taking on project after project only to end up with a work load and lifestyle worse than your previous 9-5.

These ‘bosses’ can range from friendly to rude. Yes, you may have your own terms and conditions when taking on a client with numerous negotiations about deadlines, work at hand and pay package, but at the end of the day, it is the client who dictates the direction of the project. Do you tend to work under pressure? Then, maybe your new ‘boss’ wants his work like yesterday. Do you take your time on a particular project? Well, your client may want his work like yesterday.

It doesn’t really matter how technical or simple you find the project, in your clients’ mind, they have a deadline that needs to be met in order to maintain their own equilibrium. Even the seemingly ‘no hurry’ projects still have conditions that will put you in a less bargaining position as a freelancer.

If a freelancer has many clients on board, the line between ‘boss and employee’ and ‘client and freelancer’ can be blurred. With constant communication, reminders about your upcoming deadlines and the reality that your reputation as a freelancer is at stake, you will be turned into an employee to these clients sooner than later.

As a writer, am obsessed with learning everything that deals with writing. I must admit when I began writing, my work wasn't up to par, and at times when I go through my old articles and posts, I cringe with shame at the many blatant errors I made. However, over the months I must admit I have improved greatly.

I dedicate a huge amount of my time in learning the craft, practice writing in different genres and even rewriting my old articles and blog posts. This means I spend tons of hours researching and reading articles and posts from writers and bloggers I admire and hope to emulate. Of course, I dedicate sufficient time to finish up on my projects.:)

Curing Writer's Block

Lately have found myself faced with what every writer dreads; writer’s block. I have been writing continuously for a year dreading that moment. My favourite blogs have a list of what to do when faced with such predicament, which I followed keenly. Oh, well even after been a student of these gurus, I was still faced with a blank word page that needed to be filled with words. However, after much procrastination, I discovered my own remedy. It may seem somewhat unorthodox, it did help me.

Reading Kiswahili/Native Language text

I know I am a poor reader when it comes to Kiswahili text. And no, am not talking about Sheng. I was challenged to read a Kiswahili book that I found to be a laborious affair. Majority of us are accustomed to speaking and reading in English text. Armed with a Kiswahili-English dictionary, I found myself unconsciously rewriting the text in English (pen-to-paper) and voila, I was writing feverishly.

If you are brave enough, maybe reading text in your native language can unclog the writer’s block blocking your view to creativity paradise.

Watching Cartoon/Comedy

Hold on before you pass judgment on me. These genres have a way with words. Apart from the obvious comical talk, the words are put in a skillful manner, that I found myself laughing hard and rewriting the dialogue for a different audience and genre. I know it’s hard to write a cartoon dialogue for a mature audience (think of The Simpsons), but trying to rewrite it, I found the words flowed easily.

So, next time I am faced with writer’s block, I will dust my collection of comedy movies, sit back, laugh and write.

What Have Learned About Blogging

When I started blogging I never thought it would be one steep learning curve. You see, before blogging I had read tons of websites and blogs about blogging. Tim Brownson from A Daring Adventure in his post, Psychology of Blogging highlighted six factors to consider before one starts their journey to blogosphere with an outline of six checks for any aspiring blogger;

10 spare hours a week-check
Niche market-check
Basic understanding of SEO-check
Google ad sense account-check
Dummies guide to writing great content-check
Burning desire to succeed-check

I do believe I had most of the checks ticked in my mind. However, much to my dismay, no one told me about the actual blogging bit. I was confident that I had garnered enough knowledge coupled with my rather rustic computer skills (well I only knew how to use MS office and browse). This false sense of confidence lead me to nerve-racking and near comatose moments from the mountain of technical jargon I had to read through (still trying to understand html, keywords, meta words, codes e.t.c). This somewhat guerilla learning has made me realize the comparisons I have encountered between learning to blog and running a business/freelancing.

Blog marketing

Googling the word blog marketing will give you numerous results with tips that will get your blog out there. Am yet to sit back and feel fully contended that I have marketed the blog enough. The measure of your marketing efforts are usually in increased subscribed readers or page views, high page ranking in search engines and people retweeting your posts. Think about it, if you are an entrepreneur/freelancer, a large percentage of your time, resources and efforts are spent on marketing especially if it’s a start-up. The response is usually slow with some taking months before your first client visits/emails/calls you. Well, it’s the same with blog marketing.

Tech stuff

For the tech savvy, they may find my incapacities rather mundane and almost funny but it’s really difficult even when told in the simplest language. But, there is more to understanding basic SEO as asked in the above checks. If one does not understand common words like keywords, beta, meta words, html e.t.c even blogger helper cannot rescue you. So, what did I do? I consulted with a tech savvy pal who showed me the ropes.

Even in business, one is not a master in every aspect regarding the business thus requiring outside help from experts and consultants to help one manage and run the business better.

One of the most important factors to consider before jumping onto the freelancing bandwagon is to fully understand its basics.
My journey into freelancing was by pure chance and coincidence. It has been a steep learning curve as I get to learn something new each day and loving it. I had been writing previously but pro bono without the monetary gain. But, an incident last year lead me into the midst of this vibrant part of earning a living. (I thought a 9-5 was the only legitimate avenue.) I did not get to test the waters nor learn from a successful freelancer.

With the state of the economy going south faster than you can say recession, I would strongly suggest moonlighting. This will give you a chance to:

· Start and build on a client list that will be able to sustain you without the need of a FT job.

· Gain hands-on experience in important business aspects such as management, marketing, customer service, book keeping e.t.c. This is especially important in freelancing.

· Moonlighting will give you a chance to weigh your decision. Without the romanticism about freelancing, it will give you first hand experience on whether it is something you really want to do long term or it’s just a whim. Freelancing is not a child’s game; it calls for serious commitment.

· It will help greatly if you can save up a few more coins for the rainy days. Trust me; moving from a FT job where income is steady to freelancing can cause untold ‘misery’ during those dry months as you try to find steady clients and/or your footing in the world of business.

· Apart from a lack of steady monthly income, you will need to put in place measure that will cater for medical cover and/or retirement contributions on your own. NHIF, the state owned hospital insurance fund has made it easier for self-employed persons to make their own contributions.

Alternatively, you can opt for private medical scheme from such companies as AAR, Resolutions Health and other HMOs in the country. With retirement schemes, NSSF can/will do the trick. But, just like medical cover, you can opt to make contributions through private certified providers authorized by the Retirement Benefits Authority.

Despite all the hype about freelancing and the ‘dreamy’ longing of a boss-free career, it can/could get difficult especially if you are not fully prepared. Having a sound business plan or business guide can help alleviate the horrors of running a business. Treating freelancing like a business can go a long way in establishing the foundations for a strong and vibrant career. Some of the areas you can look into include:

· Assess your strengths and weaknesses

· Establish business and personal goals. Freelancing can blur the thin line between your personal life and the business. It’s important to set the difference early on in your career.

· Assess your financial resources. Though the perceived start-up costs are low, it’s still important to evaluate what chunk of your finances can be channeled to your venture.

· Identify the financial risks. It’s also wise to calculate the risks involved depending on the type of freelancing business you are venturing into.

· Determine the start-up cost. Having established your financial resource, decide what percentage should be allocated to get the business off the ground.

· Decide on your business location. Do you want to be home-based or rent a small office/shared facilities?

· Do market research. Very important…strike that! If you don’t want your KES to go down the drain, diarize this.

· Identify your customers. You will need them…think of them as your better half.

· Identify your competitors. You have to know who you are up against, their strengths and weaknesses and chances of collaborating/joint partnerships.

· Develop a marketing plan. It will guide you in finding clients, following the true north path to success and establishing yourself as a professional. It will also help you avoid shooting aimlessly in the dark.

Yes, the economic crisis is biting every sector hard and deep. With companies and businesses cutting on costs and laying-off workers, I had to make some adjustment. For this reason, I decided to increase my rates a tad, just to cushion my already depleted pockets. But, I encountered a dilemma sooner than later; and like any freelancer will tell you, increasing ones’ rates can be a tricky affair especially with old clients. Nonetheless, the sticky situation lead to the realization that there are added benefits that a particular client can offer that would bring more business (read, cash) in the long run.

Harmonious working relationship

There are those clients you wish would teach other businesses a thing or two about handling their freelance professionals. Do you fringe at the thought of missing a client’s deadline? And no, it’s not because you will miss your targeted income for that month? When one has a good working relationship with his client(s), it becomes much easier for one to do their best as one has the peace of mind to concentrate on their work. Though I do not advocate for sticking with low paying clients simply because of excellent business relationship, its better to deal with someone who shows they value your work and input, respects you, understands business ethics, there is mutual understanding and of course, pays you in good time.

Referrals and network

Making the tough decision not to let go of my client, I had to weigh what other benefits I can/will get by being on their speed dial. This was one of the single most important factors that made me stay put. The extent and diverseness of this particular client’s network and reputation was mind boggling. My close association has given me the much needed visibility. There are clients whose name on your portfolio spells credibility, trustworthiness and professionalism from potential clients.

Growth potential

Being an entrepreneur and by extension a freelancer, one should have foresight in discerning lucrative deals both in the short and long term. Rapidly growing businesses means more work for you. If today you are copywriting a start-up’s brochure, with expected growth, the business may need a newsletter, marketing materials, web content and other business documents to keep their clients updated on a regular basis, and you well occupied with projects after projects. Look out for those opportunities in promising businesses.

Creativity freedom

Don’t you love it when you have the freedom to fully exploit your creativity? By this I mean, once a client gives you a basic concept, they have a hands-free reign on your work. This ties closely to the first point above. When I have the freedom (of course within stipulated guidelines), I find I produce quality work for I have to work my fingers to the bone to prove my credibility and maintain my reputation. And, the comments and feedback from the client reassure me that their trust in me is not in vain.

So, next time you want to let go of a client think of the other added benefits that a particular client brings to the table.

SWOT Analsis For Freelancers

Recently, I had a candid talk with one of my business consultant’ friend who gave me a few pointers on how to survivor in this harsh economic climate as a freelancer. His premise was that of using SWOT analysis to evaluate my current and future prospects and opportunities that will help me stay afloat. This, he emphasized, should be interpreted in its simplest form.

For those not adept to SWOT analysis, it’s a planning and evaluation business tool used to gauge the ‘health’ status of a business in the present and future. The acronym SWOT stands for strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

My good friend further enlightened me by saying this analysis helps look at the internal factors (SW) which are usually core to the business and are under one’s control. External factors (OT) are usually outside of one’s control but are pivotal to a business success.

So, how does SWOT work for the freelancer? How can one use SWOT to map their freelance career paths?

Strength

This can simply translate to what one is good at. And no, we are not talking about your many roles. Just think of one task that you can do so well even in your sleep. Questions to ask include:

· What are the assets, resources, people, processes or experience and knowledge that make your work easier?

· What is your competitive advantage over your competitors? Could it be your effective marketing campaigns? Location? Reliability?

When evaluating one’s strength, one should endeavor to maintain and improve upon that strength(s).

Weaknesses

Honestly, no human being wants their weaknesses pointed out, or even paraded to all and sundry. But, the opposite should be true when evaluating oneself. What are those areas that you are a total flop? What tasks give you the feeling of running to the hills? Questions to yourself here include:

· Is your reputation giving off a bad smell to your prospective clients?

· What are some of the processes or personality traits that are a major hindrance to your success? Are there glaring gaps in your capabilities?

· Do you lack a strong enough competitive advantage? Does it stem from a lack of commitment, motivation, morale or effective management on your part?

If you are candid enough and have come up with a long list of your weaknesses, take appropriate steps and measures to remedy, change or stop them.

Opportunities

Look around you, what opportunities are calling for your attention? Even in these bad economic times, opportunities are rife for those who are keen enough to look and grab them. Questions to ask include:

· Looking at your competition, what are they missing to offer to clients? What are their weak spots?

· With the ever changing business environment, what are the emerging needs of clients? Is there a new niche market that has developed not being serviced?

· Is merging or collaborating your forces with fellow freelancer the way to go?

If you have identified a potential opportunity, circle it in your diary, make it your priority to capture and build upon it.

Threats

What processes, technological advancement, government regulations or even competitors are making your services not sell like hot cakes? Is your accounting/billing/invoicing process archaic? Are your clients feeling like their needs are not been fully met? Are there new government regulations and city by-laws that are threatening your existence as a small business owner? Ask yourself:

· There is a new sheriff in town offering cheaper rates than you, what are you going to do?

· Economic pressure. The current economic climate is a major threat to every business owner and freelancer world over, what are you doing about it?

If you perceive any looming dangers or threats, you should try and counter this or minimize its impact/effect.

As for me, I had to bite the bullet and let my dirty linen known by my good friend (revealing my weaknesses’, I was surprised they filled a whole page) but in the end ‘twas worth it. I don know about you…
