Serangga ini akan terbang mencari makanan ke tempatlain ketika terganggu habitanya. Tomcat yang merupakan spesies serangga kumbang akan terbang untuk menemukan habitat baru. Tomcat tidak benar-benar menyengat dan menggigit. Namun, ketika terganggu, serangga ini akan mengeluarkan racun bernama paederin. Cairan ini menyebabkan kulit melepuh dan mengalami gatal-gatal. Cairan bisa keluar jika serangga ini dipencet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Mangrove merupakan salah satu daerah habitat serangga tomcat karena lembab. Bagian kecil ini disebut sel. Sel merupakan satu kesatuan struktural dan fungsional terkecil dari makhluk hidup yang dapat melakukan aktivitas kehidupan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semua aktivitas kehidupan manusia dilakukan oleh sel yang saling bekerja sama. Contohnya, manusia dapat bergerak karena adanya kerja otot dan tulang rangka. Otot atau dalam keseharian sering disebut daging merupakan kumpulan dari sel yang saling bergabung dan kerja secara bersama. Begitu juga tulang, terdiri dari ribuan sel yang saling bekerja sama. Jadi, aktivitas kehidupan manusia dilakukan oleh sel. Dapatkah kita melihat sel? Sel mempunyai ukuran yang sangat kecil dan tidak bisa dilihat dengan mata biasa. Untuk melihat sel kita memerlukan alat bantu berupa mikroskop. Mikroskop merupakan alat yang dapat memperbesar penglihatan terhadap benda yang ukurannya sangat kecil menjadi nampak lebih besar sehingga dapat dilihat dengan jelas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Berbentuk seperti apakah sel itu? Sel berbentuk bangun 3 dimensi yang mempunyai bentuk bermacam-macam, ada yang bulat, kubus, seperti pita dan sebagainya sesuai dengan jenis selnya. Jadi, bayangkanlah sel seperti bangun ruang yang di dalamnya terdapat cairan kental dan ada berbagai benda yang tercelup ke dalam cairan tersebut. Diri ideal adalah apa yang diharapkan atau dicita-citakan. Diri ideal, selain ditentukan sendiri oleh sang anak, lebih sering ditentukan oleh orang tua atau lingkungan keluarga dan sekitarnya. Sedangkan harga diri adalah kondisi emosi yang dirasakan oleh seseorang sehubungan dengan citra dirinya sendiri.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt; &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Semakin positif citra diri seorang anak,semakin positif pula kondisi emosi yang dirasakan (harga dirinya positif). Jika diri ideal yang diharapkan misalnya adalah mendapatkan nilai 100, maka ketika seorang anak berhasil mendapatkan nilai 100, maka ia akan melihat dirinya sebagai anak yang pandai (citra diri positif). Ketika ia melihat dirinya sebagai anak yang pandai, maka secara otomatis pula ia akan merasa hebat, percaya diri, dan mampu menghadapi persoalan yang sama dengan mudah.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Bagaimana kalau sebaliknya? Jika ia ternyata tidak mendapatkan nilai 100, maka ketika ia melihat teman-teman yang lainnya mendapatkan nilai 100 maka ia akan melihat dirinya sebagai anak yang bodoh. Semakin ia sering memikirkan dirinya yang bodoh, semakin negatif pula emosi yang dirasakannya (harga diri negatif). Ia akan merasa minder, malu, frustasi, dan tidak percaya diri.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Terus apa hubungannya dengan orang tua? Kebanyakan orang tua tidak pernah di didik untuk melihat kegagalan sebagai suatu proses untuk meraih kesuksesan. Kegagalan dipandang sebagai hal yang tabu dan memalukan. Pada dasarnya orang tua yang seperti ini adalah orang tua yang juga memiliki citra diri dan harga diri yang negatif. Karena ia tidak ingin dipermalukan dan merasa malu, maka kebanyakan orang tua akan cenderung menetapkan diri ideal yang terlalu tinggi bagi anak-anaknya. Sang anak akan cenderung diharapkan (lebih tepat dipaksa) untuk selalu memenuhi semua harapan prestasi orang tuanya. Dan sangat sering penetapan diri ideal yang dilakukan oleh orang tua terhadap anaknya adalah diri ideal yang terlalu tinggi. Semua anaknya harus memenuhi target yang telah ditetapkan setinggi-tingginya.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Apa yang terjadi kemudian? Ketika sang anak berhasil memenuhi target yang ditetapkan, maka orang tua pasti akan merasa bangga. Ia ingin menutupi harga dirinya yang negatif dengan berlindung dibalik prestasi anaknya. Harga dirinya pun akan menjadi positif. Anak-anak yang demikian pastilah anak-anak yang menjadi kebanggaan orang tua, dan sangat disayangi. Jika orang tua bercerita kepada orang lain tentang anak-anaknya, maka dapat dipastikan bahwa hanya anak yang membuat bangga dirinya saja yang paling sering diceritakan. Dengan bercerita kepada orang lain tentang prestasi anaknya, ia ingin menunjukkan bahwa citra diri dan harga dirinya pun menjadi lebih positif.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Ketika sebaliknya yang terjadi, sang anak ternyata belum mampu memenuhi target yang ditetapkan orang tua. Apa yang akan terjadi? Karena pada dasarnya sang orang tua juga memiliki citra diri dan harga diri yang negatif, maka sangat besar kemungkinan semua kesalahan itu akan ditimpakan kepada anaknya. Sang orang tua merasa malu dengan melihat prestasi anaknya yang pas-pasan. Sang orang tua tidak melihat hal itu sebagai bagian dari proses mencapai kesuksesan, tetapi dilihat sebagai penyebab malu di keluarga. Maka sudah dapat dipastikan, sang orang tua akan memarahi anaknya habis-habisan.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Sang anak yang sudah dari awal memiliki citra diri negatif karena melihat prestasinya sendiri yang pas-pasan, kini semakin diperparah dengan omelan dan hinaan yang diberikan oleh orang tuanya. Jenis-jenis omelan yang dilakukan orang tua dapat kita kategorikan sebagai berikut:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Memberi label bodoh pada anak&lt;/span&gt;. Hal pertama yang paling sering diomelkan oleh orang tua kepada anaknya adalah menyebut dirinya bodoh. Semakin sering label bodoh ini disebutkan, maka semakin sering pula penegasan ”bodoh” pada diri sang anak terjadi. Sang anak lama-lama akan semakin percaya bahwa dirinya memang bodoh.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Melakukan perbandingan&lt;/span&gt;. Ketika sudah mengomel habis-habisan dengan memberi label bodoh, maka sering pula diikuti dengan membandingkan anak sendiri dengan anak tetangga, atau anak keluarga sendiri, atau saudara anaknya sendiri. Bisa Anda rasakan bagaimana hancurnya hati seorang anak ketika selalu dibanding-bandingkan dengan orang lain. Saya sendiri yakin, sang orang tua pun tak suka dibanding-bandingkan oleh anaknya dengan orang tua yang lain.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li style="font-family: arial;"&gt;Membuat kesan tidak mengakui sang anak sebagai anaknya. ”Kamu anak siapa sih? Dulu mama dan papa tidak seperti kamu.” Jenis kalimat ini juga sering diucapkan oleh orang tua kepada anaknya. Tanpa orang tua sadari, jenis kalimat ini akan diartikan oleh pikiran bawah sadar sang anak sebagai tidak diakui dirinya sebagai anak.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Saya hanya menyebutkan tiga jenis gambaran besar omelan yang sering dilakukan orang tua, yang paling sering menjatuhkan citra diri sang anak. Dan kita sudah tahu bahwa ketika citra diri sang anak menjadi negatif, maka harga dirinya pun akan semakin negatif. Sang anak akan semakin tidak percaya diri dengan dirinya sendiri. Tanpa disadari oleh orang tua, kondisi emosi negatif ini justru membuat sang anak semakin tidak dapat ber-prestasi di sekolah. Despite such endorsements, the use of concept mapping as a basis for classroom activities in UK secondary schools does not seem to be widespread. Some of the flaws in the supporting literature are highlighted. The two main barriers to the extensive adoption of concept mapping as an integral component of typical classroom strategies are seen as the epistemological beliefs of classroom teachers and the underlying philosophy of the curriculum that they are asked to deliver. In conclusion, concept mapping is seen as a tool that may support learning within an appropriate teaching ecology. Such an ecological perspective may require, for some, a re-conceptualization of the teacher’s role in which teaching, learning and change are seen as integrated components of effective teaching.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Concept mapping is an active learning tool with numerous uses in the biology classroom, including planning, teaching, revision and assessment (e.g. Edmondson 2000, Kinchin 2000a). The concept map has been described as ‘the most important meta-cognitive tool in science education today’ by Mintzes et al. (1997: 424). Despite numerous research reports indicating the classroom benefits of concept mapping, my own experience indicates to me that biology teachers are not exploiting the benefits of concept mapping within their classrooms (a view reiterated by Brown 1995). This suggests there is a problem with classroom concept mapping that has not been explicitly addressed by the literature. Comment has been made that the research literature demonstrates some reluctance to highlight any problems with concept mapping (Kinchin 2000a). The authors of many studies seem content to cite one or two positive papers that are assumed to provide sufficient evidence upon which to rest the basic assumption that concept mapping enhances learning in the sciences. In particular, the meta-analysis by Horton et al. (1993) is often used in this way. Whilst I have no quarrel with the general findings of those authors, I feel the need for caution in&lt;br /&gt;generalizing too much from such a study. Whilst Horton et al. (1993) considered113 studies for inclusion in their review, only 18 met their designated criteria of: a) occurring in classrooms; b) comparing quantitatively measured outcomes for treatment classes with outcomes for control classes and c) including sufficient data to calculate an effect size. Of the 18 that satisfied these criteria, some were considered by those authors to be influenced by ‘novelty’ or ‘Hawthorne’ effects whilst others only considered maps produced by teachers. Of those remaining, only three were concerned with biology and subjected to peer review by publication in educational journals (Lehman et al. 1985, Heinze-Fry and Novak 1990, Schmid and Telaro 1990). These might be considered as the most significant studies from Horton’s meta-analysis in terms of supporting the use of concept mapping in the biology classroom.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In striving to conduct controlled, laboratory-style experiments, these authors have attempted to neutralize (or ignore) contextual factors which may have had most influence upon their results (Cobern 1993). Overall, these papers can be criticized for focusing on isolated elements of the total classroom milieu to the exclusion of other factors - precisely the criticism that those authors level at the general quality of science teaching and assessment which concentrates on isolated fragments of understanding, extracted from the context that provides meaning. A team surveying forests nestled between jagged, limestone cliffs on the eastern edge of Borneo island counted 219 orangutan nests, indicating a "substantial" number of the animals, said Erik Meijaard, a senior ecologist at the U.S.-based The Nature Conservancy. "We can't say for sure how many," he said, but even the most cautious estimate would indicate "several hundred at least, maybe 1,000 or 2,000 even."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The team also encountered an adult male, which angrily threw branches as they tried to take photos, and a mother and child. There are an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 orangutans left in the wild, 90 percent of them in Indonesia and the rest in neighboring Malaysia. The countries are the world's top producers of palm oil, used in food, cosmetics and to meet growing demands for "clean-burning" fuels in the U.S. and Europe. Rain forests, where the solitary animals spend almost all of their time, have been clear-cut and burned at alarming rates to make way for lucrative palm oil plantations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The steep topography, poor soil and general inaccessibility of the rugged limestone mountains appear to have shielded the area from development, at least for now, said Meijaard. Its trees include those highly sought after for commercial timber. Birute Mary Galdikas, a Canadian scientist who has spent nearly four decades studying orangutans in the wild, said most of the remaining populations are small and scattered, which make them especially vulnerable to extinction. "So yes, finding a population that science did not know about is significant, especially one of this size," she said, noting that those found on the eastern part of the island represent a rare subspecies, the black Borneon orangutan, or Pongo pygmaeus morio.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The 700-square mile (2,500-square kilometer) jungle escaped the massive fires that devastated almost all of the surrounding forests in the late 1990s. The blazes were set by plantation owners and small-scale farmers and exacerbated by the El Nino droughts. Nardiyono, who headed The Nature Conservancy's weeklong survey in December, said "it could be the density is very high because after the fires, the orangutans all flocked to one small area." It was unusual to come face-to-face with even one of the elusive creatures in the wild and to encounter three was extraordinary, he said, adding that before this expedition, he had seen just five in as many years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Conservationists say the most immediate next step will be working with local authorities to protect the area and others that fall outside of national parks. A previously undiscovered population of several hundred also was found recently on Sumatra island, home to around 7,000. "That we are still finding new populations indicates that we still have a chance to save this animal," said Paul Hartman, who heads the U.S.-funded Orangutan Conservation Service Program, adding it's not all "gloom and doom." Noviar Andayani, head of the Indonesian Primate Association and Orangutan Forum, said the new discoveries point to how much work still needs to be done to come up with accurate population assessments, considered vital to determining a species' vulnerability to extinction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"There are many areas that still have not been surveyed," she said, adding that 18 private conservation groups have just started work on an in-depth census based on interviews with people who spend time in the forests. They include villagers and those working on plantations or within logging concessions. It was believed that in order for successful learning to occur, a student must take active possession of what he or she already knows (as described in a concept map), find a relationship between each concept listed, and restructure the original concept with new terms and new understandings (Novak, 1990). Concept mapping became a way for students to visually recognize their knowledge and understanding of a topic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to Roth (1994), restructuring concepts while situated within a small group setting can greatly enhance the learning process. This peer collaboration allows students to influence and teach one another. In a group, students are able to demonstrate what they know about a subject while listening, observing, and learning from others resulting in the modification of their own understanding. Creating concept maps in groups therefore should unite teaching with learning; teaching by one student and learning by another. The end result of a concept map generated by a group of students is educationally directed social interaction by students, a product consisting of the combined knowledge of two or three students, and at least one (possibly two or three) student from each group who have had the opportunity to directly teach a fellow classmate (Novak &amp;amp; Gowin, 1996; Okebukola, 1992; Lumpe &amp;amp;Staver, 1992).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"&gt;Concept Mapping&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The physical structure of a concept map is designed for the benefit of the student and the teacher. Students create a map, review, and modify their ideas by what was drawn and written, then present to their teachers a diagram representing students’ knowledge and organization of that knowledge. Novak’s visual schema begins with the most general, inclusive concept at the top of a hierarchical diagram and proceeds downward to less general concepts and finally to specific examples (Novak, 1976). Some educators evaluate the maps using the number of concepts, links and cross-links as criteria for a grade (Novak, 1981; Novak &amp;amp; Gowin, 1996; Regis &amp;amp; Abertazzi, 1996). The links between concepts show relationships between concepts and the number of cross-links can show the degree of integration between concepts (Pearsall, Skipper &amp;amp; Mintzes, 1997).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"&gt;Social Constructivism&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to Ausubel (1968), “The most important single factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows.” Novak and Gowin (1996) acknowledge that prior knowledge is important but add that student learning is greatly affected by the environment in which instruction and learning occurs. The majority of today’s high school science classrooms still have the teacher as the center of all classroom activity (lecture being the predominate method of instruction). Due to cable television, computer programs, and reference material, and the much-used Internet, high school students have a wealth of knowledge that could be tapped into. They arrive in class with a wide variety of experiences and degrees of understanding on the topic to be learned. Teachers need to find a way to pool the resources and experiences of all students to make learning more meaningful. Group concept mapping is one way to get students actively involved in learning by using their knowledge to teach the rest of the class.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In today’s high schools, teaching students about the chemical processes occurring in plants using terminology difficult to pronounce (cellular respiration, stroma, and co-enzyme A) is a difficult task for teachers. According to the constructivist view, one problem with lecture, and teachers requiring rote memorization is that students only receive a fragmentation of knowledge (Songer &amp;amp; Mintzes, 1994). Today, however, most educators from middle school on up through graduate school use this instructional strategy without hesitation (Schmidt &amp;amp; Telaro, 1990; Tobin &amp;amp; Gallagher, 1987; Ruiz-Primo &amp;amp; Shavelson, 1996). Water from pristine mountain streams and springs show the beautifully formed geometric designs in their crystalline patterns. Nearly every cell in a person’s body has the same DNA. Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). Human DNA consists of about 3 billion bases, and more than 99 percent of those bases are the same in all people. The order, or sequence, of these bases determines the information available for building and maintaining an organism, similar to the way in which letters of the alphabet appear in a certain order to form words and sentences.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;DNA bases pair up with each other, A with T and C with G, to form units called base pairs. Each base is also attached to a sugar molecule and a phosphate molecule. Together, a base, sugar, and phosphate are called a nucleotide. Nucleotides are arranged in two long strands that form a spiral called a double helix. The structure of the double helix is somewhat like a ladder, with the base pairs forming the ladder’s rungs and the sugar and phosphate molecules forming the vertical sidepieces of the ladder.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;An important property of DNA is that it can replicate, or make copies of itself. Each strand of DNA in the double helix can serve as a pattern for duplicating the sequence of bases. And the only iron she pumps comes via her tiny spoon. Then again, she’s just 13 months old. But Ava was born with a genetic blend that will infuse her body with the explosive bursts of a power athlete and the steady engine of marathoner. Someday, this baby may blossom into a multisport, cross-training double threat. That’s not parental conjecture. That’s her DNA profile. Her mom and dad had her tested.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like more than 200 other parents to date, Hilary and Aaron Anderson paid $149 to Atlas Sports Genetics — a Boulder, Colo. company — for a sneak peek at their kid’s athletic horizons.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The Andersons received a home-analysis kit to check whether Ava has the inborn knack for strength sports (like sprinting) or endurance sports (like cycling). Then, to get the genetic scoop, they simply brushed the inside of Ava’s cheek with two cotton swabs, sealed the samples in a baggie and mailed them to an Australian lab used by Atlas. Although there are 20,000 strands of human DNA, the lab hunts for variations of just one: ACTN3, which can predict certain athletic skills, some experts believe. Five weeks later, the Andersons heard the verdict.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;“She’s a mix,” said Hilary Anderson, who wasn’t surprised by the results given that she is tall and lean and that her husband once trained for the U.S. Olympic weightlifting team. “If she came back all endurance, we’d probably focus more on the long-distance type things. Likewise, if she was all strength, we would direct her toward power sports. This will let her try all sorts of things.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" &gt;Added pressure?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;But the Andersons also understand one more thing about the test: It is drawing fire from scattered coaches, therapists and genetic experts who worry some parents will misuse the data and that the young science will inject even more pressure and politics into childhood games.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;“It is simply dangerous,” said Casey Cooper, a sports psychologist who hosts a radio show on KLAA-830 AM in Anaheim, Calif., and mother of a 5-year-old. “The more we professionalize sports younger and younger, the more we contribute to the youth drop-out rate for sports. My reaction: Save your money because to (genetically) type your child like this is only going to land them in my office later. And I charge $150 [per session].”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;At the same time, some coaches say locker-room chemistry could be shattered if roster cuts or playing time are influenced by the knowledge that one player is genetically gifted — or not.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; “Wow, I just think you’re opening a Pandora’s Box with team dynamics,” said Chad Onken, an assistant coach of the swim team at the YMCA of the Triangle in Raleigh, N.C. The youthful squad has won six national titles. “You’re talking about a small problem that could blow up to something pretty huge.“&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Still, the Andersons know all about the possible parental pitfalls. They have seen overbearing, overexpectant moms and dads up close. (The couple ran strength and conditioning camps for kids a few years back.) Consequently, they are sensitive to those emotional snares, they say.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; “So many parents thought their kid was going to be the next Bo Jackson (a former pro football and baseball star). There are going to be those parents, unfortunately, who push their kids, who live through their kids,” said Hilary, a personal trainer who played college volleyball. “For us, this was just a little side thing to help make it be fun. If Ava would rather do music or dance, that’s fine.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Atlas president and co-owner Kevin Reilly acknowledges being uneasy about clients who receive DNA results that dampen the sports dreams they hold for their kids — for example, if they learn their little boy is not genetically apt to excel at a power sport such as football.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; “I think this may be a gut check for parents to look at their motives as well: What’s in the best interest for my child, (to ask themselves) what do I want them to be and what do they want to be,” Reilly said.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; What’s more, the test can’t predict a future NFL star, Reilly said. It merely reveals if a child has the genetic markers common to people who succeed in either power or endurance events. In short, Reilly is selling the product as a parental “tool,” a DNA roadmap, a device to eventually expose children to the sports they were born to play.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The sports-DNA test has one gaping blind spot as well, YMCA coach Onken said. It can’t measure an athlete’s desire, while natural talent doesn’t always translate into a winner. The YMCA of the Triangle, which includes 350 kids from ages 7 to 18, has produced Olympic hopefuls and college-scholarship swimmers. Some of those, Onken said, excelled purely on heart and hard work. He compared them to the tiny-but-driven Notre Dame football player profiled in the 1993 movie “Rudy.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;“I can think of too many ‘Rudy’ types who overachieved here,” Onken said. “And I can think of too many playground basketball legends who could jump over a backboard but never made it off the playground.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;" &gt;Science in question&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The science, however, has doubters.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;This much is known: We all have the ACTN3 gene; we get one copy from each parent. As with many genes, though, ACTN3 can take different twists. One version of the gene — the R variant — steers the body to produce a protein that builds more fast-twitch muscles, used for potent surges of energy. The X variant, meanwhile, blocks that protein. People who inherit two sets of the R variant may be naturally engineered for power sports. Those who carry two X variant copies may have better stamina.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The “mixed pattern” people — like Ava Anderson — “may be equally suited for both endurance and sprint/power events,” says the Atlas Web site.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; Athletes’ secret to greater success? Gambling ahead TV may do no harm or good to babies Schools stop being so nitpicky about head lice&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;But Carl Foster, who co-authored an ACTN3 study and who heads the human performance lab at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, points out that multiple genes fuel athleticism, and scientists are just beginning to learn which are most vital.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; “So why do you want to spend money looking for one gene?” Foster asked. “You want parents to be supportive of their kids’ endeavors. You don’t want them to try and program their kid. And the kinds of people with disposable income are probably the kinds of people where that’s always a trap for them. They’re accomplishment-oriented.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;“They say, ‘Well, I want my kid to be the best he can be.’ Of course. It’s God, mother and apple pie. You can’t vote against it. Consider other elements of the Siemens Mobile Survey: With the exception of Australia, in every country surveyed the majority polled said they would go back for their phone if they left it at home (in Australia it was a respectable 39 percent). If you have endured the traffic in Indonesia the Philippines and India, you will know what kind of sacrifice some two-thirds of those surveyed are making. I can't think of anything I would go back for-except my wallet, may be, or my clothes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And even if we remember to bring it, we are still not happy. Many of us get anxious if it hasn't rung or a text massage hasn't appeared for a while (a while being about an hour). Once again of those surveyed Indonesians (65 percent) and Filipinos (77 percent) get particularly jittery. Australians are more laid back about this (20 percent), but every other user in Asia seems to be glancingat the phone every few seconds. This statistic is highly believable, and the instinct highly annoying. There is nothing worse than chatting to someone who constantly checks his or her hand-phone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then there's the fact that mobile phones are not only enslaving the user, they're "trampling the rights of everyone else". Around a third of folk surveyed acknowledge they get so engrossed in mobile conversations that they're often unaware of speaking loudly while discussing their private lives in public. At least most of us agree on one thing : With the exception of China, Hong Kong,  and Taiwan, the increasing use of mobile phones has led to a decline us courtesy and considerate behaviour.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line here is that we are more than a little bit out of control. Mobile phones are great : but if we allow them to dominate our lives to this extent-interupting conversations with those around us to take a call, staring at our phones rather than relating to the world and people around us, sending flirty text massages to random numbers-then I can only assume that in another 10 years, society as we know it will no longer exist. Ninety percent of the human race is susceptible to motion sickness of one kind or another. Some people become sick when they sit in the backseat of a car, others cannot read or look at a map in any kind of moving vehicle. People get motion sickness on airplanes, motorcycles, amusement park rides, and even on camels! Scientist have learned that motion sicknessoccurs when the brain is trying to make sense of a situation and there are too many conflicting messages. While the eyes are sending one message, the ears are trying to send a message about balance. The skin and bone joints, sensitive to air pressure, send another message.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people who have experienced violent motion sickness try to avoid travel. But that is not always possible.So travellers should employ some well-known strategies to avoid getting sick. The most useful strategy concerns food : eat a light meal before travelling and bring along a packet of plain soda crackers to snack on regularly. Avoid carbonated bevereges, high-fat food, and spices. Care in choosing the location of your seat is another important strategy. In a car, sit at the front and keep your eyes fixed on the horizon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People who still got sick after trying these strategies can try medical help. Some rely on over-the counter medications, although some of them can make you sleepy. Others use sipmple ginger capsules to settle their stomach. A large number of travellers use pressure bands on their wrists. This is not to say that men are not importance in chlid-rearing: indeed, they are most necessary if children are to appreciate fully the roles of both sexes. But women have proven themselves superior parents as a result of their conditioning, their less aggressive&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt; nature and their generally better communication skills.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;From the time they are little girls, females learn about nurturing. First with dolls and later perhaps with younger brothers and sisters, girls are given the role carer. Girls see their mothers in the same roles and so it is natural that they identify this as a female activity. Boys, in contrast, learn competitive role far removed from what it means to nurture. While boys may dream of adventures, girl's conditioning means they tend to see&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt; the future in terms of raising families.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;Girls also appear to be less aggressive than boys. In adulthood, it is men, not women, who prove to be the aggressors in crime and war. Obviosly, in raising children, a more patient, gentle manner is preferable to a more aggressive one. Although there certainly exist gentle men and aggressive women, by and large, female are less likely&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt; to resort to violence in attempting to solve problems.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;Finally, women tend to better communicators than men. This is shown in intelegence tests, where females, on average, do better in verbal communication than males. There may be a single European market but it does not mean that managers behave the same in &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Greece as they do in Denmark. &lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In many European countries handshaking is an automatic gasture. In France good manners require that on arriving at a business meeting a manager shakes hand with everyone present. This can be damanding task and in a crowded room, may require&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; great efforts if the farthest hand is to be reached.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Handshaking is as popular in other countries-including Germany, Belgium, and Italy. But Northern Europeans, such as the British and Scandinavians, are not quite so fond of physical demonstrations of friendliness. &lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Europe the most common challenge is not the content of the food, but the way you behave as you eat. Somethings are just not done. In France it is not good manners to raise questions of business over the main course. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Business has its place; after the cheese course. Unless you are prepared to eat in silence you have to talk about something-something, that is, other than business deal which you are continually thinking about. &lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Germany, as you walk sadly back to your hotel room, you may wonder whay your apperantly friendly hosts have not invited you out for the evening. Don't worry, it is probably nothing personal. Germans do not entertain business people with quite&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; the same enthusiasm as some of their European counterparts. &lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Germans are also notable for the amount of formality they bring to business. As an outsider, it is often difficult to know whether colleagues have been working together forv 30 years or just met in the lift. If you are used to calling people by their &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;first names this can be a little strange. To the Germans, tittles are important. Forgetting that someone should be called Herr Dokter or Frau Direktorin might cause serious offence. It is equally offensive to call them by a tittle they do not possess. &lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These cultural challenges exist side by side with the problems of doing business in a foreign language. Language, of course, is full of difficulties-disaster may be only a syllable away. But the more you know of the culture of the country you are dealing with, the less likely&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; you are to get into difficulties. It is worth the efforts. It might be rather hard to explain that the reason you lost the contract was not the product or the price, but the fact that you offended your host in a lighthearted comment over the wine served. They are mammals, like cows and elephants. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Unlike fish they bear young live, not as eggs. Their babies live on their mother's milk. They breathe through their lungs and hold &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;their breath when they go under water. If they cannot came to the surface to breathe fresh air, they will drown. They are warm-blooded. Fish, however, lay eggs, breathe oxygen in the water and are cold-blooded.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;Whales live in all ocean. In the water some of them go to warm waters to breed and in the summer most of them go to cold waters to feed. There are two kinds of whales, whales with teeth (toothed whales) and whales&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt; without teeth (baleen whales). The toothed whales eat fish and squid, which they can catch with their teeth, although they swallow their food without chewing it. The baleen whales eat plankton (small sea animals and plants). &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;When they find plankton, they open their mouths and swim into the plankton. When they close their mouths they squeeze out water and swallow the plankton. &lt;/span&gt;  &lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whales have few enemies. Only human beings and the killer whales attac wales. And whales do not seem to fight among theselves. He found that when the mixture was exposed to the light, it became darker. In 1826, Joseph Nicephore Niepce put some paper dipped in a light-sensitive chemical into his camera obscura which he left on a window. The result was probably the first permanent photographic image.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The image Niepce made was a "negative", a picture where all the white parts are black and all the black parts are white. Later, Lois Daguerre found a way to reverse the black and white parts to make "positive" prints. But when he looked at the pictures in the light, the chemical continued to react and the pictures went dark. In 1837, he found a way to "fix" the image. These images are known as daguerreotypes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many development were made in the nineteenth century. Glass plates coated with light-sensitive chemical were used to produced clear, sharp, positive prints on paper. In the 1870s, George Eastman proposed using rolls of paper film, coated with chemicals, to replace glass plates. Then, in 1888, Eastman began manufacturing the Kodak camera, the first "modern" lightweight camera which people could carry and use.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During this century, many great technological improvements have been made. One of the most important is color film. This made from layers of chemicals that are sensitive to red, green, and blue light, from which all other colors can be made.
