Retrospective of the Common Fan- Wrestlemania IX!

noreply@blogger.com (The Common Fan) — Thu, 04 Apr 2013 20:26:00 +0000

Happy Wrestlemania Week! Check out the links below for my latest Retrospective Column on Wrestlemania IX. And as a bonus, below is my Top 9 Wrestlemania Moments as a fan. Enjoy!

Link to Retrospective- http://pwtorch.com/artman2/publish/Torch_Flashbacks_19/article_69648.shtml

Top 9 Wrestlemania Moments as a fan! (With one honorable mention)

1.) Shawn Michaels vs. the Undertaker LIVE (Wrestlemania XXV)- Words can't describe the energy in the stadium for this. People were over the top into HBK where we sat in the heart of 75,000 fans. My Uncle and I were for Taker and loved throwing it in the face (Without malice of course) of the fans behind us.

2.) Ric Flair's final match (Wrestlemania XXIV, Orlando FL)- Hearing the chants, seeing the emotion, the "I love you" from Michaels... It was just incredible. Again, words can't really describe it looking back. It was a blast to call this match though with Josh Matthews at WM25 Fan Access the following year in Houston.

3.) Undertaker's Entrance LIVE (Wrestlemania XXIV, Complete with Druids in Orlando, FL)- I got chills and a buddy of mine said he almost shed a tear. Couldn't blame him, as a fan at your first Wrestlemania, it doesn't get much better than this.

4.) Walking to my seats for my first LIVE Wrestlemania (Wrestlemania XXIV in Orlando, FL)- Seeing the set and just knowing I was finally at the biggest show of the year live was one of the most incredible feelings that still gives me chills as a fan to this day. Even the night before the show, being able to drive by the stadium and see the lights on inside was unbelievable. The definition of a kid in a candy store was definitely me that whole weekend.

5.) First ROH Show in Orlando, FL during Wrestlemania XXIV Weekend- It was the Dragon Gate Challenge Show. I was absolutely blown away by my first viewing of guys like Kevin Steen, El Generico, Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black), etc. Just one of those nights as a wrestling fan I never forget.

6.) KENTA vs. Davey Richards (ROH Supercard of Honor IV, Wrestlemania XXV Weekend in Houston, TX)- This was just flat out of the best matches I've ever seen life. So stiff and competitive with a hot crowd. Words can't really describe it, you just have to see if for yourself.

7.) Watching "Stone Cold" Steve Austin get inducted into the Hall of Fame LIVE (Wrestlemania 25 Weekend- Houston, TX)- Fantastic moment.

8.) Watching Ric Flair get inducted into the Hall of Fame LIVE (Wrestlemania 24 Weekend- Orlando, FL)- Another chilling moment with all the great stories Ric told. Definitely putting his family in my prayers too with the recent passing of his son. A real shame.

9.) Accidentally having the MitB Results from Wrestlemania XXII spoiled via my buddy's DVR- So a few friends (Hey Sam and Josh, how ya doin'?) of mine got together to watch Wrestlemania the day after it aired since we had to all work on Sunday night. I think my pal Sam forgot to rewind the DVR or something (Can't remember how his worked back then) and the first image we saw was Mr. Kennedy holding the briefcase on the ladder. Talk about a spoiler! Innocent, but funny nonetheless since we were all big fans of his at the time.

Honorable Mention.) Calling Mr. Sean Radican after the opening World Title Match of Wrestlemania XXVIII when Daniel Bryan lost in 18 seconds- I was so livid and just had to vent at someone other than my wife and brother in law. Ha, man I can't remember many times being more upset than that. Sean was laughing hysterically on the other side and while I'm not proud of getting mad over something so trivial, I hope Sean has a fun memory to look back on. Here's a quick transcript as best my memory serves;

Sean- Hello?

Me- WHAT THE @#$% MAN?! SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE #$%@ JUST HAPPENED?

Sean- (Laughing) I don't know man...

Me- WELL IT'S BULL #$*@ AND I'm DONE WITH WRESTLING. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO WATCH THE REST OF THIS @#$%%!@# SHOW!

Sean- (Laughing harder now)

Me- I SWEAR TO GOD I'M GOING TO ERUPT ON YOUR NEXT AUDIO! ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL TO HAVE THIS FOR A WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT @%$#!*& TITLE MATCH!!!

Sean- (Laughing) Relax man, I agree though, it's stupid! (More laughing)

Me- (Panting) Well... I guess I should let you watch the rest of this stupid show. Seriously, after seeing that crap I'm done with WWE. Horrible.

Sean- (Laughing) Sure you are! Enjoy the show man!

Me- You too. STUPID #$%*&%# BOOKING, WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY NOT GIVE THAT MORE TIME?! Ugh, sorry, take to you later.

Yeah... Not my proudest moment, but a fun one nonetheless. I hope everyone enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane and hope this Wrestlemania gives you more memories to look back on. And I hope you can all agree with me when I say that I hope above all else, that it doesn't suck.

Quite frankly, despite a blah build-up, I love the card almost top to bottom. Wrestling should at least be present throughout the 4-hour show. Quick Stone-Cold lock- Dolph Ziggler cashes in MitB Briefcase on Del Rio after his successful title defense. He'll have already won the tag titles earlier with Big E. Dolph has two pieces of gold on RAW on April 8th. Lastly, it will be decided on the night of April 7th if my wife can repeat as the Pick 'Em Champion at my WM House Party. She won the Rumble, which was humbling enough. Thanks for reading, enjoy the show and Happy Easter!

Chatting with Cruz- Previewing Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup X!

noreply@blogger.com (The Common Fan) — Tue, 11 Dec 2012 19:58:00 +0000

Hey everyone, read my interview below with Cruz of Los Ben Dejos below as we talk about the upcoming Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup on December 14th and 15th live on iPPV (THIS WEEKEND)! We preview the show and then ramble on about another hosts of topics including video games, wrestling today, and Christmas memories!

World Wrestling Network presents
Jeff Peterson Cup X
Friday, December 14, 2012 - 8 PM Bell Time
Saturday, December 15, 2012 - 6 PM Bell Time
The Orpheum
1915 E. 7th Avenue
Ybor City, FL

The tenth annual and final Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup.

The event was established to honor the memory of independent wrestler "All American" Jeff Peterson who died at age 21 after a two-year battle with leukemia.

It is a standard 16-man single-elimination tournament intended to showcase the top junior heavyweight wrestlers from independent promotions throughout the United States and Japan.

Many top independent wrestlers have participated in the event with former winners including Reckless Youth (2003), Justice (2004), Chris Sabin (2005), Milano Collection AT (2006), Chris Hero (2007), Erick Stevens (2008), Davey Richards (2009), Sami Callihan (2010) and AR Fox (2011)

Jimmy- Welcome readers to the first of hopefully many explosive and ground breaking interviews via social networking for Perspectives of the Common Fan. I have with me my good friend and professional wrestler Cruz of Los Ben Dejos. How are you today sir?

Cruz- I'm good man. How are you doing?

Jimmy- Great man, can't complain here. Appreciate you taking the time to stop by and talk about the upcoming Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup X iPPV airing over at WWNLive.com on December 14th and 15th. What can viewers expect to see at each of those events?

Cruz- Everyone that attends or tunes in via WWNLive.com are going to be treated to the best wrestlers the independent scene has to offer. the JPC has always been about showcasing up and coming talent whilst honoring Jeff Peterson, who lost his battle with leukemia. Its grown into this sort of launching pad for talent all over the world, and this year it will be no different.

Jimmy- Awesome, and each night only is only $9.99 for the Live Viewing or $14.99 for Live AND On-Demand so you can watch it again and again. Bell times are 8 PM on Friday and 6 PM on Saturday correct?

Cruz- That's correct. For those who live in Florida, I implore you to come out to The Orpheum in Ybor on both nights. Not only is it the LAST JPC ever, it's also acting as a fundraiser for Nathan Dobbs who has medical bills that need to be taken care of. ALL proceeds, from the gate to the iPPV buys go to him and his family.

Jimmy- It's always great to see organizations come together and give back like that. Sounds like a great show and this is an event has never seemed to be short on talent. The likes of Chris Sabin and Chris Hero won some of the earlier events and more recently some break-out talent like Sami Callihan in 2010 and AR Fox in 2011 took the cup. Like you said with this being the last year of the event it would seem that it's even more important to support those causes now. How did you come about finding out that being on the show?

Cruz- I rolled over from a terrible nights sleep and saw a text from Jay, the other half of our amazeballs team, that just said "We're in this years JPC"... I pretty much laid there for a few minutes until I actually grasped what he sent. It's pretty surreal. Internally, it's always been on my so called "wrestling bucket list". We were part of the event last year, but just for a tag team battle royal. While grateful for the opportunity, that wasn't enough for me. I wanted to actually be IN the tournament and sharing the ring with these amazing talents. Now its finally happening, and its the last one ever, so it makes it even more special in my eyes.

Jimmy- Hell of a way to correct a bad night's sleep I would say! Well congrats to both of your for the opportunity and I'm sure your match will be one that can't be missed. Has any of the actual card been revealed yet? If not you can of course give that news here for the wrestling world to see... Just an idea. One to ponder over for the next few seconds at least.

Cruz- Not at all! I don't think all of the entrants have been revealed as of yet either. I honestly prefer it that way though. You've got international standouts like Samuray del Sol, AR Fox and Jonathan Gresham mixing it up with amazing local talent like Mike Cruz, Eddie Rios, Greek God Papadon, Lince Dorado, and John Silver. The possibilities for amazing matches are endless. This is a rare occasion for Los Ben Dejos because we are actually splitting up for just this weekend to test our mettle against these amazing athletes. Sometimes you get the stigma of "oh, they're just tag guys".. Now we get the chance to prove to the world that we can go; singles or otherwise.

Jimmy- Yeah I think it's gotta be something you and Jay Rios have got to be clamoring for since you started. iPPV is definitely becoming a huge part of wrestling and I think WWNLive personally has done it better than anyone else over the last year or two. And this isn't your first stint on iPPV either correct? I believe Los Ben Dejos were on an Evolve or Dragon Gate USA show this year as well but the event just slipped my mind. I know, I'm a failure.

Cruz- That's correct. We actually were part of DGUSA's Mercury Rising 2012 card in Miami, FL which was shown on iPPV. It was an awesome experience to be part of such a great show with one of the most talented locker rooms in the world.

Jimmy- Ah, that's right. I remember watching that and being like "Holy Crap, I know them!". I can't imagine what that must've felt like either. DGUSA has certainly made a pretty big jump with putting their shows on iPPV and doing a great job with the quality as well. Not to dive too deep behind the curtain but what was that experience like being with that group of guys? And ladies for that matter.

Cruz- I believe they've set the bar for iPPV's and they've done a great job. As far as the locker room goes, it was business as usual. We've been fortunate enough to have been able to share locker rooms with upstarts and bonafied legends before, and it's always a treat. Being there doesn't make us feel bigger than what we are, but at the same time, we were there for a reason. The DGUSA locker room welcomed us with open arms when they didn't really have to, considering we aren't part of their main roster. Im grateful for that. It's all been a positive experience so far.

Jimmy- That's fantastic. Nice to hear some positive things about any locker room and from my conversations with Gabe Sapolsky he really seems to want to push that iPPV technology envelope and I hope for the sake of everyone out there looking for any bookings that it works out for them. He seems to be very hands on as well and is very active in social media, especially with responding to fan opinions on his product.

Cruz- Definitely. The wrestling business model has changed with the advent of social media. There is no other choice but to embrace it. I believe he's done that very well.

Jimmy- Agreed, agreed. Now to shift just a bit, do you watch other company's on a regular basis? I'll keep it positive in this case since it's always easy to pick apart much of what we see, but if so what gets you to keep coming back every week? Whether it be WWE, TNA, or anyone else for that matter.

Cruz- I do. I believe that to be successful in whatever you do in life; you have to prepare for it. In my case, its wrestling. I watch whatever I can get my hands on. Not as much as id like, due to being an adult and actually having to leave the house once in a while, but still. WWE, TNA, ROH, DGUSA, Evolve, NJPW, Zero 1, Mexico, etc, etc. I have tapes and such, but YouTube is a wonderful thing. Anything and everything is on there. I choose to study my craft whenever I can. Its borderline unhealthy sometimes!

Jimmy- Adult lives?! I call Hogwash on that sir! But alas, that is true for many of us. This is why time machines or any device that stops time needs to exist in order for us to be able to fit in everything. I'll start a Kickstarter Campaign and send you the link. I expect you to tell all your friends! But yeah that's really the key, any craft requires study and kudos for doing your homework. I think you've mentioned this before but correct me if I'm wrong, you always looked up to a WWE Hall of Famer known as Mr. Wrestlemania?

Cruz- Yeah. He's definitely one of my "go to" guys to watch. I grew up watching him and I've always tried to emulate his in ring style. For better or worse!

Cruz and Rios

Jimmy- Not a bad person to emulate my friend, not at all. Wrapping up the wrestling chatter, what are your thoughts on WrestleCon 2013? I thought it was a great idea when it was announced and I'm sure you'd have to be included in way, shape or form. I say if ComiCon exists, why can't WrestleCon? Good times to be had by all I say.

Cruz- I think it's an excellent idea. The world will already have its sight set on the NY/NJ area Wrestlemania weekend and this is a great way to introduce fans who aren't "independent savvy" to product they would have otherwise never known about. Its a win/win for everyone.

As for our involvement; we'll be there. Im not wanting to shed any details yet though!

Jimmy- Ah, you're such the tease! But exactly, with that huge market exposure is the key word and I think that's a hug, epic win for Independent wrestling in general. So if I want to keep nagging you about your involvement that weekend, how can I do so?

Cruz- Insert gratuitous social media plug here! Haha, easy my friend. Hit us up on ze twitter at @Lucha_Cruz and @Lucha_Rios and/or on our Facebook fan page: facebook.com/LosBenDejos I personally tweet way more than I should, and not just about wrestling but those are the best places to keep tabs on us and to see what we are up to next.

Jimmy- Awesome. Spam away readers! While were on the pandering subject, my twitter is @TheCommonFan. Feel free to complain about this interview or debate me about what the best video game of all time is. Hint: It's not WWE 13'.

Anything else before we roll on to the after dark portion of the interview my friend?

Cruz- Yes! Support independent wrestling! Your favorite wrestlers always come from somewhere, and most likely its a bingo hall or a gymnasium. Without the fans support, its truly hard to do what we do. Los Ben Dejos are extremely thankful for all the support we've gotten over the years; keep it going, friends!

Jimmy- So now that we're on to the "exclusive" part of this fine interview, I've gotta ask with being in the Christmas spirit, what's the best gift you can remember receiving? You can say our friendship of course, since that's a gift that keeps on giving. But not in a disturbing way or anything.

Cruz- Haha, well, not to sound mushy, but I heart you. ANYWAY, a few years ago when the iPad first came out, I was clamoring for one. And I mean salivating! But as luck would have it, it was super expensive and im an independent wrestler. It was a no go. Long story short, Leva surprised me with one for Christmas and my jaw dropped. It's not because of the actual gift, but because I knew how much she must have sacrificed to A) Find one and Pay for it. When people say "its the thought that counts"; it truly is.

Jimmy- Haha, spending money is hardly a happy face. That's awesome though, I think going back as a kid I loved it when I got either a Batman playset, or the Turtle Sewers playset. Really hard to believe those brands still exist today. It gives me hope for humanity. Recently I've been messing around with Dishonored too... Played it?

Cruz- Yes I have! Its sooo good. I can only play an hour at a time or so due to that adulthood I talked about earlier, but yes, im enjoying it very much. Im trying to play it without killing anyone... it rarely works out that way.

Jimmy- That was one that I wasn't sure if I'd like, since I'm not a huge Fallout or Elder Scrolls fan (I know, I know) but it reminds me a ton much of Bioshock that I'm already digging it. I already killed numerous foes, haha. Too hard to put down. Get a chance to watch much TV? You've gotta be a Walking Dead fan if I think I know you well enough!

Cruz- FOR SHAME!!!!! Anyway, Walking Dead, Dexter and Big Bang Theory. That's all I have time to watch and I enjoy them immensely. Zombies, blood and nerds... that pretty much describes me.

Jimmy- Ditto sir! I need to catch-up on this season's Dexter, I hear it's amazing. And the voice of Miranda from Mass Effect 2 and 3 is a cast member? Can't wait to watch it for sure. So many things to watch, play... *Sigh*. Well I hope you have a great Christmas man, really appreciate having the chance to catch up and chat with you today.

Cruz- Not at all man. Thank you for taking the time to listen... or read my ramblings. Take care!

Jimmy- Later man! For all the readers, this has once again been your Perspective from a Common Fan.

Once again, this event is for a great cause and I'd highly recommend it to any wrestling fan. Check out WWNLive.com for more information on the event and enjoy the tomfoolery Cruz and myself yap about. Many thanks!

CHIKARA King of Trios Night 3 Review!

noreply@blogger.com (The Common Fan) — Fri, 09 Nov 2012 00:28:00 +0000

Head on over to the link below (PW Torch) and check out my latest review! I take a look at CHIKARA's King of Trios Night 3. Be on the lookout for the normal Perspectives of the Common Fan column here (Also posted over on my IGN page under TheCommonFan) as well as a Retrospective of the Common Fan column over at the Torch in the coming month.

It's really hard to believe that over the last 3 years of doing the podcast that I've been able to speak to a writer from WWE (Alex Greenfield), a former WCW World Heavyweight Champion (DDP), a company head and former booker (Gabe Sapolsky), and wrestlers including Larry Dallas and Glacier. Of course many more but case in point, my show was more than I ever imagined it could be! Many thanks again for a wonderful ride through the world of podcasting and for all the support and may the force be with you.

The end of an era.....

noreply@blogger.com (The Common Fan) — Mon, 29 Oct 2012 16:00:00 +0000

Well, it's finally time. Perspectives of the Common Fan as a podcast is officially ending. At least on any kind of regular basis. While I've never had the largest fan base, I've had an absolute blast doing this show and learned a lot about conducting interview, editing audio, and designing a simple website. So why end it?

Well, a few reasons. First and most importantly, my heart just isn't in it right now. That's not to say there isn't anything to talk about; Ryback is catching on in the WWE, Independent wrestling is better than ever, there are a ton of great movies and games coming out, and sports are as wild as ever. My heart just isn't in trying to put out a great podcast when doing so really isn't a strong skill set of mine. I'm confident in my abilities and being able to go out and get a guest to come on the show, but the time it takes me to record and edit it in general has become somewhat stressful for me.

For a brief history lesson, we started the podcast on Blog Talk Radio back in mid-2009. It was a simple format; One hour, free, automatically uploaded, live feedback and call-ins, etc. Then they cut down the time to 30 minutes for free users (I was saving for a wedding and a house at the time) and I wanted to record beyond that time restraint. So I set out on my own to update my Blogger website and was able to record freely with my own music, segments, and format. The problem was the while I had finished school, bought a house, and gotten married shortly after, time was running thinner and thinner in my schedule. Work was picking up, and other interests started to take over what time I normally set aside for the show.

It was tough for Steve and I as it was to get on a good schedule to record, but then it became even harder. He's always been a great co-host and we still debate to this day on a ton of things (He is my Uncle after all and helped me come up with the show to begin with) but like me, we've got families and work/personal lives that make the show even harder to do on a regular basis. As you all have seen I tried other guests on the show at times including some friends and family to mix it up. I even expanded a bit to include talk about video games, movies, comics, etc. but even then my heart still hasn't in it and heck, I didn't even bother to go out and really get original guests for the show. That lack of desire to make the show as good as it can be isn't fair to you as listeners. If I'm going to do something, if it becomes less than 100% of my effort, it's not going to happen at all.

Ultimately I believe my decision comes down to wanting to do more than I'm able to do with the show. Aside from my lack of motivation and desire at this time, I know I could do more with more resources, specifically money and people. I say this because while I've improved at audio editing and designing my site, I just can't do everything on my own enough to make this podcast a show that I feel is worth you, the listeners precious time. Before I could always point to the excuses of lack of time and being new in the world of podcasting. Those excuses don't fly now, and you all deserve better.

Oddly enough, I've received no negative feedback on the show but always hold myself to a high standard when given enough time to do so. Instead of promising future shows and trying work on it without really wanting to, I've decided to stop the show and make way for those who really have the resources and people around them.

I hope I don't sound bitter because I've loved doing this and have learned a lot. I'm very proud of it and have no regrets. I also of course thank everyone who has been involved as a guest or co-host and will now focus my time on writing again about wrestling, gaming, movies, sports, and other topics as well as contributing more to the PW Torch site. Focusing on my own podcast took away from this in the past and I believe this will help me get more exposure and experience before maybe someday coming back to realm of podcasting.

Thanks very much again for all the support and you can still listen to some of our past episodes (Down to #40 I believe. The others are still archived under Perspectives of the Common Fan over at www.blogtalkradio.com) on this very site by clicking the RSS feed button. Our iTunes subscription path (Just search Perspectives of the Common Fan in iTunes) still works as well but at this time it's only showing our most Episode #68. If I continue this podcast in the future I'll be sure to make sure that works completely. Our Facebook and Twitter pages will also be still as active as they can be as I post new blogs, contribute more with the Radican's Wrestling Community page/show and PW Torch, and give other random thoughts from the perspective of a common fan.

Remember, this isn't the end of Perspectives of the Common Fan, just another evolution in what I plan to offer the masses. Or at least, to those who want to read about what a common fan like me has to say. Look out for a new Retrospective column for the PW Torch by Thanksgiving as well as a review of the "King of Trios- Night 3" CHIKARA show. Lastly, my other thoughts on games, movies, sports, etc. that are not wrestling related will also be posted to IGN (Will post the link soon). I'm in the process of making a profile there while deleting my 1UP profile. This way I have two major sites that can also hold most of my work for more readers to see. Hey, maybe a quick audio episode or interview isn't even out of the question. Never say never right? Until next time peeps!

Episode #69- NFL/Refs, Mass Effect, more football, and quick wrestling thoughts!

noreply@blogger.com (The Common Fan) — Fri, 28 Sep 2012 05:41:00 +0000

Hey all, this week Steve is out and I'm joined by my good friend Elton as we yap football including the Ref debacle, Bucs kneel strategy, and a lot of Mass Effect nerd speak on the side. Then I'm joined by my Dad as we talk more football and I wrap up the show with some wrestling thoughts and feedback. We're really trying to improve audio quality and I won't put out a show unless it sounds good enough to me if I was taking the time to listen to a show. The delay in this episode was tweaking that and I've tried to study up how I build the show, keep it fresh, control the length, and improve the quality. Please feel free to send us feedback and thanks for listening! Twitter- @TheCommonFan Facebook- Perspectives of the Common Fan E-Mail- potcfpodcast@gmail.com

We're back again this week with more random ramblings from myself, Steve, and some guests that include a good friend of mine named Carl and my Dad, plus a few more so spread the word for peeps if they just want a fun, relaxing podcast to listen to. Beware of a few minutes of political/religious chatter near the end of the show but again, just opinions and basic conversation that I promise doesn't last long, lol. No harm meant to anyone and especially no hate but of course as with anything (Mainly the interesting stuff though of course- Sports, Wrestling, Movies, etc.) drop us a tweet or comment on Facebook so we can interact with all of you! Thanks again for the support and enjoy the talks on College Football, NFL, Marvel Movies, Batman, Comics, and of course, Wrestling. :)
